He founded the academic discipline of social administration (now largely known in universities as social policy) and held the founding chair in the subject at the London School of Economics.
His books and articles of the 1950s helped to define the characteristics of Britain's post World War II welfare state and of a universal welfare society, in ways that parallel the contributions of Alva Myrdal and Gunnar Myrdal in Sweden. He is honoured in the Richard Titmuss Chair in Social Policy at the LSE, which is currently held by Julian Le Grand.
Titmuss's association with eugenics extended beyond the British Eugenics Society, to encompass other personal and intellectual connections.
He is also honoured by the annual Richard Titmuss Memorial Lecture in the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.
At the LSE, where he was the first professor of Social Administration, he transformed the teaching of social work and social workers and established Social Policy as an academic discipline. He also contributed to a number of government committees on the health service and social policy. He also did some consulting in Africa, sometimes together with Professor Brian Abel-Smith, who was later his successor in his chair.
His concerns focused especially on issues of social justice. His final and perhaps the most important book, The Gift Relationship expressed his own philosophy of altruism in social and health policy and, like much of his work, emphasized his preference for the values of public service over private or commercial forms of care. The book was influential and resulted in a study of the blood bank systems, specifically with regard to regulation on the private blood market exchange. President Nixon called for a complete study of the lack of coordination within the system only months following publication of Titmuss' findings.

It mainly sells frozen foods, including prepared meals and vegetables, alongside non-frozen grocery items such as produce, meat, dairy and dry goods. The company also operates a chain of shops called The Food Warehouse.
Iceland Foods began business in 1970, when Malcolm Walker opened the first store in Leg Street, Oswestry, Shropshire, England, with his business partner Peter Hinchcliffe. Together, they invested £60 for one month's rent at the store. They were still employees of Woolworths at the time, and their employment was terminated once their employer discovered their other roles. Iceland Foods initially specialised in loose frozen food. In 1977, they opened a store in Manchester selling own-labelled packaged food, and by 1978 the company had 28 stores.
In 1983, the business grew by purchasing the 18 stores of Bristol-based St. Catherine's Freezer Centres, and in 1984 the business went public for the first time. The cash investment was used to purchase South East-based Orchard Frozen Foods in 1986, and the purchase of larger rival Bejam in 1988. In 1993, the firm took over the food halls of the Littlewoods department store and also acquired the French Au Gel chain. This last move proved unsuccessful and the stores were dropped within a year

Although it was a fishing village, it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort. it starts at Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors. It was the second National Trail to be opened (1969). The town is at the northern end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail which starts at Hessle and crosses the Yorkshire Wolds. Filey is the finishing point for Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. The 70-mile (110 km) ride begins at Wetherby Racecourse.
Filey has a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line. A second station at Filey Holiday Camp railway station to the south of the town served the former Butlins holiday camp. The camp has since been re-developed into a 600-home holiday housing development, The Bay Filey. It is one of the largest coastal developments of this kind in the UK and the first homes were completed in 2007.

Daniels, who happened upon the test yesterday, said the sight of the water filling the 1-acre pool was awe-inspiring after years of planning and building.
Construction workers from around the site paused to look and listen during the tests as engineers below the memorial plaza monitored and adjusted the 16 pumps that will circulate 480,000 gallons of recycled water.
During the design phase of the memorial, there were concerns that the fountains might be too loud. But Daniels said the sound of the cascading water yesterday created a nice, peaceful background, like the sound of the ocean.
It's perfect. It's not overwhelming at all, Daniels said.
A second fountain over the footprint of the south tower will be ready for testing later this year. A spokesman for the Port Authority, which is overseeing construction of the $500 million memorial, said yesterday's trial run went very well.
The two fountains together make up the nation's largest manmade waterfalls, and are at the heart of the design of the memorial, called Reflecting Absence.
Paula Berry, a 9/11 family member who served on the 13-member jury that picked the memorial design by Michael Arad, was ecstatic about the test run.
The presence of water is incredibly important at the memorial, said Berry. When you think of the memorial's name, Reflecting Absence, you have to have the means to reflect and the water plays that role.
But Berry said the sound of the water rushing over the sides of the fountains could very well be one of the most lasting impressions visitors take away.
Yesterday's tests lasted a few hours, and will be repeated as needed.

The desire was to bring hope, freshness and new life to Bridge Street and the community. A streetscape concept emerged, incorporating every aspect of the urban landscape and its elements including paving, seating units and lighting columns.
CONCEPT
Central to the design is a tear shaped water feature. Water emerges from a broken glacial boulder, flows along a bronze channel, whose sides tell the story of creation, in low relief detail, and cascades onto a bronze dome, which bears the imprints of the hands of local school children. The dome is circled by a disk of etched copper that pictures the faces of several children, including Tim and Jonathan. Inspiration for the River of Life came from the powerful description of waters and the leaves of the trees - for the healing of the nations - described in the biblical book of Revelation. Symbols of brokeness, healing, new life and the passage of time can be seen and discovered throughout this unique artwork.
A symbolic water source is re-created over the full length of the pedestrianised section of Bridge Street. Using natural stone and granite sets, the floor design detail accurately mirrors the meandering course of the River Mersey as it passes through the borough of Warrington. Set into this meandering path are 12 bronze discs, that are part of the Leaves of the Trees project and involved twelve primary schools from the Borough.

The development provides 42,000 square metres of highly energy-efficient office space in two blocks, broadly triangular in plan, which are linked by one of the largest glazed atriums in Europe. This semi-public space allows pedestrians to use it as a sheltered thoroughfare.
The building replaces a sixteen-storey 1960s office development which obstructed important view corridors between Greenwich and St Pauls Cathedral and between the Monument and the Tower of London. The new buildings restore these views and open up this historically important site, creating a new public plaza with trees and water features.
The engineering of the atriums glass walls in excess of twenty metres in height is technically highly advanced: they are hung like curtains from tension cables stretched between the two buildings. They terminate one storey above ground level, creating an open space through which the public can move freely.
In order to prevent the faades from swaying under wind loads, they are tied back to the columns that support the glass roof with glass needles bora-silicate glass pipes, more commonly used to transport corrosive chemicals. Each needle consists of two layers of glass an inner structural tube and an outer protective layer. A PVB interlayer holds the two together. The tubes have been pre-compressed in order to overcome the inherent weakness of glass when under tension. Each tube takes the wind load of almost 50m2 of facade. The tubes have been tested to three times their design load. They have never been used in an architectural application before.
The building is highly energy efficient, incorporating blade-like aluminium louvres for solar shading, displacement ventilation and high insulation levels. The lobbies incorporate two large wall paintings by the renowned American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt.

In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total demolition. The windmill is one of Warwickshire's most famous landmarks. It stands on a hilltop overlooking the village of Chesterton, near the Roman Fosse Way and about five miles (8 km) south-east of Warwick. It was built around 1632-1633, probably by Sir Edward Peyto, who was Lord of the Chesterton Manor House. At this time John Stone, a pupil of Inigo Jones, was in Chesterton designing the new Manor House and he probably helped with the windmill as well. Sir Edward was a mathematician and astrologer and probably his own architect to the windmill, but although claims have been made that the tower was originally built as an observatory, the estate accounts now at Warwick Record Office show that it has always been a windmill, making it the earliest tower mill in England to retain any of its working parts.

One of the first plans for a national library was that devised by the Welsh mathematician John Dee, who in 1556 presented Mary I of England with a visionary plan for the preservation of old books, manuscripts and records and the founding of a national library but his proposal was not taken up.
The beautiful National Library of Ireland was established by the Dublin Science and Art Museum Act, 1877, which provided that the bulk of the collections in the possession of the Royal Dublin Society, should be vested in the then Department of Science and Art for the benefit of the public and of the Society, and for the purposes of the Act.
An Agreement of 1881 provided that the Library should operate under the superintendence of a Council of twelve Trustees, eight of whom were appointed by the Society and four by the Government
this Agreement also conferred on the Trustees the duty of appointing the officers of the Library. This arrangement remained in place until the library became an autonomous cultural institution in 2005.
After the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1924/5 the Library was transferred to the Department of Education under which it remained until 1986 when it was transferred to the Department of An Taoiseach. In 1927 the Library was granted legal deposit status under the Industrial and Commercial Property (Protection) Act, 1927. In 1992 the Library transferred to the newly established Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht (now Arts, Sport and Tourism) and on 3 May 2005 became an autonomous cultural institution under the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997.

Released June 1995, A Northern Soul is the second studio album by English rock band The Verve. The title is a reference to Northern Soul, a popular soul movement in Britain during the 1960s at which Wigan (The Wigan casino) was near its epicentre.
The Verve formed in 1990 in Wigan with Richard Ashcroft on vox, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones, and drummer Peter Salisbury. Simon Tong later became a member. Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to shoegazing and space rock, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and three albums.
I had first heard a track from their first album on a magazine compilation and was then hooked.
For this 2nd album the band de-camped to their Wigan-based practice room to begin writing and recording songs for their second studio album. Commenting on the effect that working in the 'dank rehearsal room' had on the band's songwriting process, frontman Richard Ashcroft stated:
'Practising in a dungeon in Wigan for this record, you're devoid of any kind of fashion, or thought of 'This is what we should be doing'. Like a band that goes into the studio and plays the music they hear in their heads rather than what they read in magazines'.
Critical acclaim was heaped upon the album (justifyably). Guitar Magazine writer Dan Eccleston claimed 'the band retreated to their Wigan rehearsal room and plugged in, tuned up and flipped out into that parallel universe wherein the Verve song resides. And the result is A Northern Soul - a record whose deep, dark funky rock makes their actually rather lovely '93 debut A Storm in Heaven sound almost limp. The Verve essence remains - swirling guitar arpeggios, grand rock themes, sprawling structures - but it's warmer, denser and more powerful in every way.'

Wigan Athletic Football Club is a professional football (Soccer ! ) team based in Wigan, Greater Manchester. They compete in the Premier League, in which they have been playing since their promotion from the Championship in 2005. Wigan's current spell in the Premier League is the only top flight run in the club's history.
They have played at the DW Stadium since 1999, which they now own, sharing the stadium with rugby league club Wigan Warriors. They previously played at Springfield Park for 67 years.

it is named after England's first policewoman. Miss Mary Allen and Miss Ellen F. Harburn reported for duty on the 'beat' on November 27, 1914, during the First World War.
The government had always opposed the idea of police women but with large numbers of policemen joining the British Army, it was considered a good idea to have women volunteers to help run the service. Another reason that Dawson's proposal was accepted was that her members were willing to work without pay
In February 1915 Dawson and Allen renamed her organisation, the Women's Police Service (WPS). At first the WPS concentrated its work in the London area. Wearing a dark-blue uniform, the WPS were assigned responsibilities such as looking after the welfare of refugees.
Later that year, Allen was sent to sort out problems in Grantham and Hull. Both towns had army camps and local people were complaining about drunken behaviour and a growth in prostitution.
Mary Allen was a former suffragette and had been previously arrested outside the House of Commons and later went on to be the commandant of the UK's women's police force from the 1920s up to 1940. She helped to set up women's police forces in other countries, including Germany. Edith Smith became the first female with powers of arrest in August 1915.

Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton\u2019s Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a \u201clate erected building or meeting place\u201d.
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built.
Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham\u2019s Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.
Another famous member of the chapel was Frederick Monks 1834-1912, an entrepreneur and industrialist, his enlightened treatment of his workforce was influenced by the ethical preaching of Pearsall Carpenter. The high esteem in which he was held is testified by the 2ft high clock of solid
brass open work on a marble stand. On it are inscribed the words \u201cpresented to Mr. F. Monks of the Wire Department of the White Cross
Wire and Iron Co. Ltd. as a token of respect on his retirement from active management in connection with the company in July 1874\u201d. Frederick
Monks presented the Golden Gates to Warrington where they currently stand outside the Town Hall.
Joseph Priestley. Scientist, Minister and Thinker (1733-1804) is perhaps the best known individual associated with the Academy. He is now more known as a great scientist but as a lecturer he introduced the subjects of chemistry, anatomy and civic responsibility to the curriculum of the academy. He was however primarily a Minister and was ordained at Warrington. His belief that Jesus was an ethical teacher and not a God influenced greatly the development of Unitarianism.
A supporter of the French Revolution and a campaigner against slavery he left England after his home and chapel in Birmingham were burnt by a mob. After leaving England and settling in America in 1794, he established the first American Unitarian Church in Philadelphia.

A pig is commemorated on the west wall of the tower, this could be the evidence or the start of the medieval urban myth. That would certainley be an intelligent pig that would not be eaten in just one sitting!
The Domesday Book in 1086 records that a church existed here at the time of the Norman conquest . The oldest part of the present church dates from the early 14th century. An inscription in the church commemorates King Oswald of Northumbria, a prominent Christian, who is said to have been killed here in 642.
Remains on the site ate thought to go back even further. The current church occupies the site of an ancient Druidical altar and pre-Christian temple. Excavations beneath this Chancel in 1828 revealed 3 gigantic skeletons supporting these theories.
Pictured here is the chancel, formed from a panorama of four seperate images joined. The main body of the church and its wooden nave is currently under threat from Death Watch Beatle. In late april teh local newspaper, the Warrington Guardian reported the following:
'The oak beams of the nave roof at the Winwick church have been gnawed at by death watch beetles, a wood-boring insect, which has led to water seeping into the Legh Chapel and major structural problems in Gerrard Chapel.
The nave has been closed since January after builders carried out maintenance on ceiling tiles and discovered the delapidated beams. Wardens must now apply to English Heritage for a grant by June if they are to get funding during 2010 to resolve the problem.
They hope to hear if they are successful by the end of the year. The work will be carried out over the next two years, depending on how the grant is staged. Warden Christine Melia said: \u201cWe\u2019re looking to set up a website to support the funding and we\u2019re hoping that members of the congregation get involved.\u201d
Meanwhile the main Sunday morning services are being held in the church hall. The chancel can still be used for baptisms and weddings but only if the congregation does not exceed 50 people. Christine confirmed that the application for the English Heritage grant would be fully supported by the Rev Canon June Steventon, who was licensed as the church\u2019s new vicar on Tuesday.
St Oswald\u2019s Church is a Grade I listed structure and its earliest parts date back to the early 13th century with the nave \u2013 the long central part of the building \u2013 dated at roughly 1580'

It is dominated by its largest building, Manchester Town Hall Grade I, a Victorian Gothic building by Alfred Waterhouse and previously in the opposite corner by the Square Albert, a Tetleys pub.
Albert Memorial, a monument to Prince Albert, Prince consort of Queen Victoria is in the square. The square, also named after the Prince, was originally laid out to provide a space for this memorial in 1863\u201367. Work on the new town hall began in 1868 and was completed in 1877. On the top of the clock tower is a golden cotton seed, the symbol of teh source of Manchester City and its cottonopolis prosperity.
The creation of the square arose out of a project by Manchester Corporation's Monuments Committee to erect a memorial to Prince Albert who had unexpectedly died of typhoid in 1861. After some initial proposals to create a memorial library, museum or botanical gardens, the committee decided to erect a statue in a decorated canopy. It was originally planned to place the monument in Piccadilly Gardens, but it was felt that its ornate design was not in keeping with the surrounding buildings. In 1863, land was offered by the Corporation which was cleared to make way for a public space.
The project won much public support
the Manchester Bricklayers' Protection Society donated 50,000 bricks towards the construction of the monument, 'as an expression of sympathy towards our beloved Queen'. When construction problems arose (the site was found to be riddled with drains and culverts) and these bricks were used up on the foundations alone, a further public subscription was launched in 1865 and a further \u00a36,249 was raised, in spite of the hardships of the Cotton Famine.
The Memorial is topped with an ornate spire, and on each side a crocketed gable with canopied pinnacles on colonettes. Within the canopies stand symbolic figures representing art, commerce, science and agriculture. Below these stand secondary figures representing particular disciplines
The Four Arts: painting, architecture, music, sculpture
Commerce: the Four Continents
The Four Sciences: chemistry, astronomy, mechanics, mathematics
Agriculture: the Four Seasons.
In the town hall, despite its medieval styling, the building was designed to support the practical technologies of the 19th century. These included gas lighting, and a warm-air heating system, which provided fresh air drawn through ornamental stone air inlets placed below the windows and admitted behind the hot water pipes and 'coils' of rooms. Warmed, fresh air was also fed into the stairwells and through hollow shafts within the spiral staircases in order to ventilate the corridors. The pipes that supplied the gas for the lighting were ingeniously concealed underneath the banister rails of the spiral staircases.
While not quite as grand as the hotel de ville in Brussels or similar buildings in Europe, the town hall in Manchester proclaimed that the city had 'arrived'. A saying capturing this sense of innovation survives today: 'What Manchester does today, the rest of the world does tomorrow. Although I do not think they were in fact refering to Bez of the Happy Mondays when they coined that :-)

I can recommend his fish in cajun spiced batter, just have some lager at the ready! His sign states 'Simply The Best Chippy In Winnington'. That cannot be denied as he has the 'only' chippy in Winnington, however he does do top chips!
Fish and chips, often referred to as national takeaway food of these islands originated in the victorian era. It is pretty much everywhere and even in rural areas, like Cornwall or Mull, it often arrives by mobile van in the evening. Around 1860, it is legend that the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Jewish proprietor Joseph Malin who married together 'fish fried in the Jewish fashion' with thick chiped potatoes. In 1863 the chip shop reached Manchester, when a Mr Lees opened a shop in Mossley. Interestingly, throughout world war II, fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing. Salt and vinegar (spirit preferred) or gravy usually goes with it.
Across britain, fish and chip shops offer a varied menu. Pete covers the usual staples
mushy peas, Dinaclass curry sauce, sausages, heated (but not fried) pies and suit puddings, gravy, fried chicken. Further north you can expect scallops (wide slices of potato in batter), deep fried Mars bars, deep fried pizza and haggis are popular in Scotland. In Edinburgh you would most likely buy a 'supper' with 'Salt n sauce' (watered down brown sauce - 'sottensauce'). In many places you can buy a whole picked egg or individual pickled onions too. In east Anglia and the south east fish roes or rock salmon can often be found.
Most places use vegatable oil these days, but a few proudly fry in lard (and generally have a sign outside shouting the fact). Waste frying oil is sometimes nowadays used to make bio-diesel. Older diesel cars can often run on it without modification. I would not try it in a HDI style engine though!
As a kid I remember the local chippy doing fizzy minerals too. Ben Shaws from Huddesfield with 2p back on the bottle, which was returned. Collect enough of those to take back and you had enough for a bag of chips with batter bits (and pea-wet if you couldn't afford a proper portion of green mushy peas). You always got it in newspaper too, that was before the possible perils of printers ink were legislated for. Still the terrible names are still there

You have no doubt passed it many times on the A50. Its worth a visit (just take a left when you see the 'Styling Your Curves' sign next to the road as you reach the Choy Hing Village.
Certainly more a shop for the ladies, I wouldn't know my underwired from my padded basque or the difference between a body, babydoll or a Bustier. Luckily Linda has a website for 'La Bonita' (which in spanish means 'The Pretty One' - www.labonitaonline.com 01925 212937) so if you are looking at something for the weekend, you can order it there on your plastic.
Being a bloke the correct choice of a well fitted bra has not really been one of my problems. As several women have told me over the years, finding a good shop that understands this is generally worth its weight in gold. Linda has some useful hints and tips on her website and I am sure if you take yourself in to see her, you will be in good hands. She can no doubt guide you through the minefield of types

The quantity of underwiring in some bra's is now becoming an issue with enhanced metal detector checks at airports. Triumph International have launched a 'Frequent Flyer Bra'. This oneuses metal free clasps and resin underwires instead of steel that are guaranteed to not set off metal detectors.

It is thatched with real fires and has a large garden and dining area. It is a 17th Century building situated between Ringwood and Christchurch about five miles from the famous Ringwood Brewery. It was originally a private house, and became an inn in 1725.
Sopley village was a centre of smuggling. The smugglers boats were heaved up from the River Avon to the Woolpack, where pack horses were waiting to take the goods to the New Forest and onward to the centres of Winchester and London.
The pub name probably originated because the vicar, the Rev. James Willis, was a keen sheep farmer and took a major part in distributing his Merino sheep, of which he had over a thousand throughout the district. These are a small, short-woolled breed, prized for their fine wool. As IOW Ray mentions below too, this pub sign was painted by local Sign Artist, Peter J Oldreive.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4334926783 - 'Quite an unassuming place Warrington Museum, Cheshire seems, when looked at while being dragged around at high speed by a young child.
The museum is one of the oldest municipal museums in the UK and reflects something of the important local Victorians around at the time (1848), their interests and travels. It is a grade II listed building and houses fossils, Egyptian artefacts as well as relics of the old Warrington industries such as steel (particularly wire), clocks, textiles, brewing, tanning and chemicals are on display.
Since designation as new town, it is hard to see the old history beyond the shopping sites and new roads and buildings.
It can be regarded as a dormitory town for manchester or Liverpool and to wait on central station for the 08:13 sort of confirms that stereotype, particularly the stand in the corridor until Birchwood. Slightly shamefully hat was how I came to live in Warrington many years ago.
If you have time, spend a quarter of an hour in this little municipal jewel box. Slide out some fossil draws and check out how it used to be.

The tower has a recessed spire built in 1850.
Legend says that the church was founded by St Wilfrid on a journey through Cheshire in the 7th Century, but the first documented evidence of a church on the site is an existing priest and church in 1086.

The stadium, originally proposed as an athletics arena in Manchester's bid for the 2000 Summer Olympics, was converted after the 2002 Commonwealth Games from a 38,000 capacity arena to a 48,000 seat football stadium at a cost to the city council of £22 million and to Manchester City of £20 million. Manchester City F.C. agreed to lease the stadium from Manchester City Council and moved there from Maine Road in the summer of 2003.
The stadium was built by Laing Construction at a cost of £112 million and was designed and engineered by ArupSport, whose design incorporated a cable-stayed roof structure which is separated from the main stadium bowl and suspended entirely by twelve exterior masts and attached cables.[14] The stadium design has received much praise and many accolades, including an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2004 for its innovative inclusive building design and a special award in 2003 from the Institution of Structural Engineers for its unique structural design.
In August 2015, a 7,000 seat third tier on the South Stand was completed, in time for the start of the 2015“16 football season. The expansion was designed to be in keeping with the existing roof design.

Opened in 1878, it is a Grade II* listed building, operated by Blackpool Entertainment Company Limited[2] on behalf of Blackpool Council, which purchased the property from Leisure Parcs Ltd as part of a £40 million deal in 2010.
The Winter Gardens has hosted the annual conferences of British political parties and trade unions and its owners claim that every Prime Minister since World War II has addressed an audience at the venue.
It has also hosted the Blackpool Dance Festival since its inception in 1920, and the World Matchplay darts tournament since 1994. The annual dance competitions Miss Dance of Great Britain and Dance Master UK are hosted there annually.

The hall is home to the The Hallé orchestra, the UK's oldest extant symphony orchestra, and is the primary concert venue for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The building sits on a bed of 280 springs, which help reduce external noise.
