Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75P - The Parr Arms, a traditional British public house tied to Robinsons Brewery, stands in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, photographed during a cold winter period in January with light snow covering the pub garden and surrounding paved areas. The white-painted pub building, with its distinctive signage, wrought iron gates and lantern-style lights, is shown under clear blue skies and low winter sunlight, which highlights the crisp textures of the exterior and the contrast between snow, brickwork and painted surfaces.
Village pubs such as the Parr Arms have long played an important role in English social life, acting as community meeting places and focal points for rural villages. In winter, particularly during periods of frost and snow, these pubs take on an additional sense of warmth and familiarity, even when photographed without people present. The quiet, undisturbed setting enhances the feeling of calm and nostalgia often associated with traditional English pubs in the countryside.
The image reflects wider themes of British pub culture, hospitality, leisure and local identity, as well as seasonal change and winter weather in England. As a Robinsons Brewery tied house, the pub also represents the long-established brewing traditions of the North West of England. The combination of heritage architecture, village setting and winter snow makes the photograph suitable for editorial use in travel features, lifestyle publications, hospitality coverage, calendars and broader cultural storytelling focused on traditional England and rural community life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75X - St Wilfrid's Church, the historic Anglican parish church of Grappenhall, stands on Church Lane near Warrington in Cheshire, England, photographed during a cold winter period in January with a light covering of snow settled across the churchyard. The red sandstone church, largely dating from the medieval period and designated as a Grade I listed building, is shown surrounded by old gravestones, boundary walls and mature trees stripped of leaves by the winter season. Frost and snow accentuate the textures of the stonework and memorials, while clear blue skies and low winter sunlight create sharp contrast and a calm, crisp atmosphere.
The scene reflects the quiet, reflective character often associated with English village churches in winter, when activity is subdued and the landscape feels paused. The snow-covered churchyard evokes themes of time, memory and continuity, with gravestones marking generations of local history and community life. The absence of people enhances the sense of stillness and contemplation, making the image suitable for use in editorial contexts exploring spirituality, faith, remembrance and the passage of time.
Grappenhall is a historic Cheshire village now forming part of the wider Warrington area in North West England, and St Wilfrid's Church has long been a focal point for religious worship, local identity and cultural heritage. The photograph captures both the architectural significance of the building and its role within the rural English landscape, set against seasonal weather conditions typical of winter in Britain. As well as illustrating religious heritage, the image lends itself to wider themes including British history, traditional village life, the English countryside, seasonal change, climate and weather, and the enduring presence of historic landmarks within modern communities.
The combination of winter snow, historic architecture and tranquil rural setting makes the image suitable for travel features, heritage publications etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R72E70 - Leading contractor developer for the social housing sector, Lane End Developments Construction, has gone into administration.
The Warrington-based business operates across the North west of England and Wales.
Managing directors of insolvency firm Quantuma Jeremy Woodside and Frank Ofonagoro, both of the firm's Manchester office, have been appointed joint administrators.
The company was set up in 2016 and has built more than 1,100. It currently has live projects on 17 different sites - which aimed to create 1,700 new homes - employing 118 staff.
Current projects include delivering a 177 affordable homes scheme in Llandudno in partnership with ClwydAlyn and a 60 home scheme with Torus in Wigan.
In its last financial year, to the end of May, 2022, the company generated revenues of around £81m with a pre-tax profit of nearly £250,000.
Mr Woodside said:This is obviously a very difficult and uncertain time for the company, its employees and suppliers, and its wider stakeholders.
We're currently working alongside potential funders and senior management to assess the options available to them to restructure Lane End Developments Construction and allow it to continue to operate and deliver housing projects.
The contractor had been developing schemes with a string of housing associations, including L&Q, Jigsaw Homes and Onward, when it announced its collapse in April.
At the time, the three landlords said they were disappointed and concerned about the firm's collapse, but none were named in the list of creditors that are owed money.
The administrator's proposal shows that for the year end of 31 May 2022, Lane End had a turnover of more than £81m, but its profit for the year was less than £178,000. Tangible assets were just over £1m.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRRB - A close view of official signage for Latchford Locks on the Manchester Ship Canal at Latchford in Warrington, Cheshire. The sign identifies the site as part of the Manchester Ship Canal network, operated by Peel Ports on behalf of The Manchester Ship Canal Company Limited, and includes safety and access symbols associated with working canal infrastructure.
Latchford Locks form part of the historic Manchester Ship Canal, a major piece of late-19th-century civil engineering that transformed inland shipping access between Manchester and the Mersey estuary. The locks continue to serve commercial navigation while also existing within a modern urban environment, requiring clear public safety signage and controlled access.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents contemporary management of historic industrial waterways in England. It illustrates themes of transport heritage, infrastructure maintenance, public safety, and the ongoing operational role of the Manchester Ship Canal in the UK's inland waterway system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNY9 - This image shows a duck crossing sign attached to a wooden fence beside Massey Brook in Cheshire, England. The illustrated sign depicts an adult duck followed by ducklings and includes a conservation message encouraging people not to disturb or chase wildlife.
Such signs are commonly placed near streams, brooks, ponds, and rural paths to raise awareness of local wildlife movements, particularly during the spring and summer breeding season when ducklings are present. The setting, with fencing, grass, and trees, reflects a traditional English countryside environment.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating wildlife protection, countryside access, rural conservation, environmental education, and British nature, as well as conceptual themes around coexistence between people and wildlife.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JHF - This image shows exterior signage for the Kumon Maths and English programme at the Warrington South Study Centre in Grappenhall, Cheshire. The sign is mounted on a red brick wall and clearly displays the Kumon brand, subjects offered, and local contact telephone number.
Kumon is an international supplementary education provider offering structured maths and English study programmes designed to support children's independent learning outside the mainstream school curriculum. In the UK, Kumon centres are commonly located in residential or community settings and cater to pupils from early primary age through to secondary school level.
The signage reflects the recognisable Kumon visual identity, using simple typography and contrasting colours to emphasise clarity and approachability. The presence of both maths and English subjects highlights the programme's focus on core academic skills such as numeracy, literacy, and confidence in learning.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering private education, tutoring services, children's learning, education branding, community study centres, and the role of supplementary education in the UK schooling system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNGE - This image shows The Causeway, a former public house located on Wilderspool Causeway in Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA4 1AD). The substantial red-brick and rendered building, with gabled elevations and decorative detailing, reflects late Victorian or Edwardian pub architecture designed to act as a prominent roadside landmark.
Formerly operated by Pubmaster, the pub is pictured closed and vacant, illustrating the long-term decline of many suburban and arterial-route public houses across England. Changes in drinking habits, increased regulation, and economic pressures have resulted in widespread closures, leaving buildings such as this awaiting redevelopment or reuse.
Situated on a key route into Warrington, The Causeway would once have served as an important social hub for local residents and travellers alike. Its current empty state highlights the physical and social legacy of pub closures on local communities and streetscapes.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering the decline of British pubs, hospitality industry change, community identity, vacant commercial property, regeneration debates, and the architectural heritage of public houses in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNE6 - This image shows an electronic roadside speed indicator sign displaying the message Your Speed 27 followed by Thank You, indicating that a passing vehicle is travelling below the posted 30 mph speed limit. These digital feedback signs are commonly installed on residential and urban roads across the United Kingdom as part of traffic-calming and road-safety initiatives.
Unlike enforcement cameras, speed indicator devices are designed to influence driver behaviour through immediate feedback rather than penalties. When drivers remain within the speed limit, positive reinforcement messages such as Thank You are displayed, encouraging continued compliance and awareness.
The sign is mounted on a roadside pole beside a two-lane road, with a passing vehicle captured in motion, reinforcing the real-world context of everyday driving. Such signage is often used near housing estates, schools, and pedestrian-heavy areas to reduce accident risk and improve community safety.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering road safety, traffic management, transport policy, urban infrastructure, community speed reduction schemes, and responsible driving behaviour in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7XF8W - A road in Warrington has been slammed for having what's claimed to be the biggest pothole in the Cheshire town.
Thelwall Lane, in Latchford, is lined with houses and businesses and it's suffered due to the worsening state of the road.
Warrington South Conservative MP Andy Carter questioned if it was the biggest pothole in his constituency.
The condition of the road, which runs next to the Manchester Ship Canal, has visibly deteriorated over winter.
It's the only route for large wagons and trucks to access industrial sites and units at the bottom, which has increased the pothole's size.
The road is owned by Peel Ports Ltd, yet is due for adoption' by Warrington Borough Council.
Andy Carter said there are plans to repair and resurface the whole lane, yet a timescale for the work is unknown.
He wrote: Is this largest pot hole in Warrington South?
I've heard from residents and businesses based on Thelwall Lane in Latchford about the worsening state of the road over the last few weeks.
The road is due for adoption by Warrington Council but is currently owned by Peel Ports.
I've been advised that there is a plan to repair and totally resurface. I've written to the CEO of Peel to ask for a timescale for the work to be completed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K90G19 - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 187374 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 187374 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000
The church is built in red sandstone with a slate roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a continuous nave and chancel of seven bays with a clerestory,
On the outside of the church, immediately below the west window, is a carving of a cat and it is suggested that this might be the origin of the Cheshire cat. A sundial in the churchyard is dated 1714 and is listed at Grade II. At set of stocks at the entrance to the churchyard, also listed at Grade II, have endstones probably dating from the 17th century. The churchyard also contains five war graves of British service personnel, two from World War I and three from World War II

Thursday, 10 March 2022, more at https://www.warrington.gov.uk/news/stockton-heath-swing-bridge-set-refurbishment
Plans continue to develop for the full refurbishment of Stockton Heath swing bridge, with works targeted to take place next year.
The works will involve Peel Ports investing around £6million in undertaking a complete structural, mechanical, electrical refurbishment and repainting programme to improve the longevity of this key asset.
The swing bridge, across the Manchester Ship Canal, links Stockton Heath village to the town centre and the north.
Peel Ports and Warrington Borough Council are in advanced discussions for the major refurbishment works to begin in April 2023. This date has been chosen in order to ensure that there is sufficient time for preparations to be made for these works, to ensure that their impact can be mitigated as much as possible.
However, it is clear that these essential works will cause considerable disruption, and both Peel Ports and the council feel it is vital to give as much warning time as possible of the planned works.
The chosen start date will also ensure that the majority of the works are undertaken during more favourable weather conditions. In addition, the inclusion of the summer holidays in the works period (where traffic flows and associated disruption will also be reduced), aims to minimise disruption to children travelling to and from school.
Peel Ports estimate that the works will take approximately nine months to complete and have ensured 12 months' notice to communicate this so bridge users can make alternative arrangements during this time.
Their appointed contractor has looked at all options to undertake these works while maintaining some access for people to cross the bridge. However, due to the extent of the refurbishment, the works can only be carried out safely with the bridge being completely closed to all users, including pedestrians, cyclists

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C59GFM - HM Prison Thorn Cross is a Category D Adult Male Institution for males aged 21+. The prison is located in the village of Appleton Thorn (near Warrington) in Cheshire, England. Thorn Cross is operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service.
Thorn Cross Prison opened in 1985, on the site of the former RNAS Stretton (HMS Blackcap) airfield. Thorn Cross was initially used as an open prison for adult males. In 1996, the prison was re-rolled as a Young Offenders Institution. At the time, Thorn Cross was the first such institution in the United Kingdom to enforce military-style disciplinary regime for some of its inmates, which led to a part of the prison (unit 5) being labelled a boot camp.
In January 1999, an inspection report from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons labelled Thorn Cross Prison as an inspirational example of good practice. In particular the report praised the prison's High Intensity Training (HIT) project, and recommended it be rolled out to other prisons.
In October 2005, a further inspection report highly praised Thorn Cross Prison, again highlighting the prisons HIT program. The report also noted that Thorn Cross managed to reduce re-offending amongst its ex-inmates to just over 20 per cent, one of the best rates in the country. The report added that the prison had to do more to improve relations with the local community however.
Present day
HM Prison Thorn Cross is a Category D Adult Male Institution for males aged 21+. Accommodation consists of single rooms, each prisoner having his own room key.
Education and training courses offered at the prison include Construction Crafts, Motor Vehicles, Horticulture, Hospitality and Catering and Rail Construction (NVQ Level 2). Thorn Cross has a number of partnerships with national and local employers, offering opportunities for work placements prior to and on release.

Outside the house were the Parish Stocks (removed 1850). The house was called the Stone Jug. Fenna would not have had a uniform and was unpaid for the work he did, which was not a lot. He would walk the streets with a lantern at night and have a rattle for attracting attention. He did get paid expenses for duties such as relief of the poor, flogging people and putting people in the stocks, etc.
In 1864 a single storey building was built on the existing site and there was one Sergeant and one PC for the village. The area outside the Police Station (Victoria Square) was called Pigeon Bank' and belonged to the Police Station. Every year the fairground from Warrington (Silcocks) would stop at Stockton Heath on their way to Stoke. With the permission of Sgt. Norris they set up their tents, Dobbie horses (roundabouts), Coconut Shy's etc. It is recorded that one year Sgt. Norris' son who was of age' (over 12 generally) came out of the Police Station, jumped on a Dobbie Horse and broke it.
In 1911 that Police Station was closed and demolished with a new Police Station opening the following year. The dates are to be seen on the headers of the drainpipes.
The new Station incorporated a Magistrate's Court and living quarters for the Inspector. Gas lamps, some of which can still be seen in the cells, illuminated the Police Station. The Inspector's house that was the area now used by the writing room, gents toilet and kitchen and upstairs the waiting room toilets and Court two. The Inspector's daughter who lived until recently in Stockton Heath recalled that her bedroom was the Court Waiting Room. After she came home from school she would have to clean and polish the Court floors for no payment.

Purpose
The Environment Agency's stated purpose is, to protect or enhance the environment, taken as a whole so as to promote the objective of achieving sustainable development (taken from the Environment Act 1995, section 4). Protection of the environment relates to threats such as flood and pollution. The vision of the Agency is of a rich, healthy and diverse environment for present and future generations.
Scope
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters.[2] In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive.
There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CAF7G4 - Bells are ringing out again across Grappenhall village.
Four of the old bells, which are more than 300 years old, have been preserved for their historic value and hang above the new ones in the tower of the historic church.
The sounds of the new bells could be heard again earlier this month, ringing out across the area.
A spokesman from the bell ringers said: We are absolutely delighted with these bells. We hope that those who were within earshot enjoyed the ringing as much as we did. Listen out for us on Sunday morning.
After an absence of six months, the new bells for St Wilfrid's Church arrived on Friday, July 5.
The new ring of 10 bells has been cast at the foundry of John Taylor & Co of Loughborough, with each donated by individuals or groups in the village.
Ringers and parishioners had the chance to visit the foundry to watch the castings take place.
Nick Thomson, ringing master at Grappenhall Bell Ringers, said: The tenor bell (the heaviest bell in the ring) weighs just over half a ton, and has been donated by the bell ringers themselves.
The ninth bell has been donated by the PCC and is in remembrance of those who fell in the First World War as a special tribute to the fallen, the foundry has cast a ring of poppies in the crown of the bell.
The bells were taken into the church and put on display so that they could be viewed before they make the journey up the tower.
The bell ringers have been using churches in Stockton Heath and Stretton to continue with their weekly practises during the absence.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9AER - Prosecco is an Italian white wine. Prosecco controlled designation of origin can be spumante (sparkling wine), frizzante (semi-sparkling wine), or tranquillo (still wine). It is made from Glera grapes, formerly known also as Prosecco, but other grape varieties may be included. The following varieties are traditionally used with Glera up to a maximum of 15 per cent of the total: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. The name Prosecco is derived from the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated.
Prosecco DOC is produced in nine provinces spanning the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. Prosecco Superiore DOCG comes in two varieties: Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, which can only be made in the Treviso province of Veneto on the hills between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene (north of Treviso), and the smaller Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced near the town of Asolo.
Prosecco is the main ingredient of the Bellini cocktail and can be a less expensive substitute of Champagne. It is also a key ingredient of venetian spritz, a popular cocktail in northern Italy.

Following research and a demonstration of various types of defibrillators, the Parish Council decided to team up with the Heartbeat Community Trust to establish a managed service for our defibrillator that has been placed in the phone box.
Many thanks are owed to the owners of the Hatton Arms for arranging for the installation of the cabinet and for providing the necessary power source. The defibrillator is active and will be checked on a weekly basis. It has been registered with the North West Ambulance Service and our agreement with CHT means that support is available to reinstate it following use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTAE6 - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (27 January 1832 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer of world-famous children's fiction, notably Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. He was noted for his facility at word play, logic and fantasy. The poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer and Anglican deacon.
Carroll came from a family of High Church Anglicans, and developed a long relationship with Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar and teacher. It was the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, whose daughter Alice is widely identified as the original for Alice in Wonderland, though Carroll always denied this.
Several aspects of Carroll's life appear to confirm suspicions that he was a pedophile, though scholars have also made a credible case in his defence. In the absence of hard evidence, the issue of Carroll's hidden private life has provoked a lively debate, especially in recent times.
Dodgson was born in the small parsonage at Daresbury in Cheshire near the towns of Warrington and Runcorn, the eldest boy but already the third child of the four-and-a-half-year-old marriage. Eight more children followed. When Charles was 11, his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9Y69 - Lewis Carroll was the son of Charles Dodgson, the Rector of All Saint's Church in Daresbury village and Frances Jane Lutwidge, his real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the pen name Lewis Carroll is derived from his first 2 names, Charles and Lutwidge. He lived in the parsonage, which was bult in 1819, until 1843 when he was 11 years old when his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees and the family went to live in North Yorkshire.
The parsonage was a large, double-fronted dwelling built from stone and hand made bricks, it had a schoolroom, parlour, cellars and seven upstairs rooms. Nine of Charles' ten siblings were also born in the house, his father took in paying pupils who stayed to learn Latin and Ancient Greek. The 1841 census lists a total of 22 people living in the house.
Though it was a happy home for the Dodgson family, the house was distant from the rector's parishoners at Daresbury. It was empty when it burnt down in around 1884.
The site contains a commemorative stone and a series of interpretive displays. The entrance to the parsonage is marked by a metal arch which echoes the archway that led into the original house, while the well, which once stood at the rear of the house, features a dormouse worked in metal. The sculpture which traces where the walls would have stood was designed by Christine Wilcox-Baker and crafted by Dave Broadbent. The site is now owned by the National Trust.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY06DF - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY09FY - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England.
