Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RY1R1J - Thelwall Morris Men were formed in October 1973, the nucleus of the side being a group of regulars from the Thelwall Folk Club at the Pickering Arms, which was run by Maggie and Rod Goodall.
All of these men were absolute beginners. Some had seen morris dancing at Keele University Folk Festival earlier in the year and fancied trying it. The only trouble was how to get started?
The answer proved to be a small ad in Folk Review magazine, asking for someone to come and teach the dance. Around this time, Chris Maple, who became the side's first squire and foreman had arrived in the North West to take up a job in Liverpool. Chris proved well equal to the task of getting his raw recruits off on the right foot (or in our case, the left).
The side's first musician was Fred Horrobin (Maggie's dad) who busked on accordion for a couple of weeks until someone unearthed the exceptionally talented Steve Burgess from downtown Stockton Heath. Under Chris's tuition, the side learned an assortment of Cotswold dances, mainly Bampton and Adderbury to begin with. The first public performance took place, without baldricks and badges, at the Pickering Arms in August 1974 before a sceptical audience of wives and girlfriends and members of the folk club.
By 1975 the side had acquired it's kit. Black breeches and shoes, white shirt and socks, with baldricks of pale blue and claret surmounted by a distinctive badge representing the wall of Thells or stakes from which Thelwall, England's smallest city, derived its name in Anglo-Saxon times.
The side's first invitation to a day of dance was from Southport Swords in May 1975, and the inexperienced side made a favourable impression. The following year they attended their first Ring Meeting at Thaxted and have attended a Ring Meeting almost every year since then.
In 1977, the side visited Ireland for the Cobh festival, quickly followed, in 1979, by an invitation to Mallow, Ireland

We've been looking back at the way the village came together to celebrate 1000 years in 1923 and 1050 years in 1973. In 1923, Thelwall's celebrations helped to fund a new war memorial (Bell Lane), dedicated in 1925. So successful was the event that the pub was drunk dry and the caterers ran out of food and drinks. In May 1973, Thelwall Youth and Community Association organised Festival 1050 “ a four day event with a folk festival, a piano recital by Stephen Hough, an arts and crafts exhibition in the school and a procession that saw Miss Thelwall (Carol Moss) brought across the Manchester Ship Canal by the ferry boat where she was met by the Thelwall Rose Queen (Julie Lager) to a fanfare. They then joined a procession of vintage cars round the village.

The administrator's proposal shows that for the year end of 31 May 2022, Lane End had a turnover of more than £81m, but its profit for the year was less than £178,000. Tangible assets were just over £1m.

Taxonomy
Hyacinthoides non-scripta was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his seminal 1753 work Species Plantarum, as a species in the genus Hyacinthus. The specific epithet non-scriptus[Note 1] means unlettered or unmarked and was intended to distinguish this plant from the classical hyacinth of Greek mythology. This mythical flower, which was almost certainly not the modern hyacinth, sprang up from the blood of the dying prince Hyacinthus. His lover, the god Apollo, shed tears that marked the new flower's petals with the letters AIAI (alas) as a sign of his grief

Biography
Carter was privately educated at Worksop College. He went on to study Economics at the University of Leicester. In 2011 he attended Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.
Carter was group managing director of Manchester-based GMG Radio before the group was taken over by Global Radio in 2014. After leaving radio he worked in a family business and ran a consultancy firm. He was selected as the Conservative candidate for Warrington South in March 2019. He was elected to the seat at the general election in December that year, gaining the seat from the Labour incumbent. He is a volunteer magistrate.

And it is these bridges that make this canal both unique and ground breaking.
The Cantilever itself weighs about 783 tonnes and the 206ft span carries the roadway 75 feet above the water level.
It was designed to provide a constant route to Latchford Train Station free from the interference and traffic stoppages associated with the turning of the nearby swing bridges.
The 36-mile canal opened on May 21, 1894, in a bid to divert trade from Liverpool docks into the centre of Manchester.
Dubbed The Big Ditch', more than 54million cubic yards of material were excavated for the canal, including 12million cubic yards of sandstone rock.
Terraced houses were set up nearby for workers, the likes of which can be seen on the estates off Knutsford Road in Latchford.
Meanwhile, bigwigs of the Manchester Ship Canal Company set up home in grand villas, most of which still exist in lower Grappenhall and Stockton Heath.
Work was twice delayed by water flooding into sections of the excavation, in November 1890 and December 1891.
However, the canal was finally completely filled with water in November 1893.
It opened to its first traffic on January 1, 1894. Today it is still a seaway for 1,500 ships annually carrying 6.5million tonnes of cargo.

It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873“74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 1873“74 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000
A series of concerts of classical music entitled Live at St Wilfrid's is hosted by the church, and includes performances by both young artists and by performers with international reputations
On the outside of the church, immediately below the west window, is a carving of a cat and it is suggested that this might be the origin of the Cheshire cat. A sundial in the churchyard is dated 1714 and is listed at Grade II. At set of stocks at the entrance to the churchyard, also listed at Grade II, have endstones probably dating from the 17th century. The churchyard also contains five war graves of British service personnel, two from World War I and three from World War II

Grey herons are prevalent throughout Europe, Africa and also in Asia. Herons can stand for several minutes with their necks tensed, waiting for an unsuspecting fish to swim into reach. Alternatively, they will stalk the shallows searching for food. Then, quick as a flash, they will dart down and spear the prey with their long dagger-like bill.
The grey heron is the only member of the heron family to be commonly found in Britain. You will be lucky to catch a glimpse of the bittern, which is very scarce, or the egret, which is a rare visitor. Thankfully, the grey heron population is doing well in the UK and is more abundant now than ever before, despite the ever-present danger of starvation over the cold winter months.

Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG is a German international discount supermarket chain that operates over 10,000 stores across Europe and the United States. Headquartered in Neckarsulm, Baden-Württemberg, the company belongs to the Schwarz Group, which also operates the hypermarket chain Kaufland.
Lidl opened its first UK store in 1994. Since then, Lidl UK has grown consistently, and today has over 800 stores. While it is still a small player in the United Kingdom, with a grocery market share of less than 5%, its importance, along with that of continental, no-frills competitor Aldi is growing, with half of the shoppers in the United Kingdom visiting Aldi or Lidl over Christmas 2014.

Hexel was first set up as a computer shop on Cairo Street in the town centre in 1996 before moving to its current home around 15 years ago, making it one of Warrington's longest established IT firms.
It took Craig, his wife Pandy and two of the company's engineers roughly a week to paint the side of the building before work was completed yesterday, Wednesday, with a few finishing touches.
He added: It's probably taken us about a week to paint the rainbow all in all.
The Union Jack was quite a landmark that everyone knew, so I didn't want to lose that.
I can't believe it's eight years ago since we did it, that made everyone smile as well.
People are always saying ˜are you the place with the Union Jack on it?'.
It might come back at some point in a year or two when all of this is over.
I've got plenty of rainbow paint leftover if anybody needs any.

There has been an inn or hotel on the same site for much longer and the village of Grappenhall itself is recorded as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. The image of a grinning cat carved into the tower on St. Wilfrids Church is believed to be the inspiration for Lewis Carolls Cheshire cat in Alices Adventures in Wonderland. One of the many unique features of The Rams Head Inn is the original village well, situated near the bar. Over the next few years Margaret turned the business around from a fancy good shop back to a chandlery with help from Brian and Nigel when they were not working in their own careers. Brian decided in 1997 to stop paining and decorating and joined Margret working full time in the shop.

The window was designed by the stained glass artist Geoffrey Webb and depicts a Nativity scene, at which both Carroll and Alice are present. Below the Nativity scene are 5 panels illustrated with characters and scenes from Alice in Wonderland including the White Rabbit, the Lizard, the Dodo, the Caterpillar, Fish-Footman, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, March Hare, Duchess, Gryphon, Mock Turtle, Knave and Queen of Hearts. The famous Cheshire Cat can be found in the centre of the fifth panel. The 3 centre panels contain verses from the Lewis Carroll's poem ˜Christmas Greetings (From a Fairy to a Child)'.

The garden was created circa 1864 as the kitchen garden to the Walton Lea mansion house. It was designed by Edward Walters and built by George Crosfield, the eldest son of soap manufacturing pioneer Joseph Crosfield. In the early 1900s the house was bought by the Armitage family. In 1923 it was bought by the Greenall family, owners of nearby Walton Hall. The Greenall and Crosfield families were political rivals and in 1925 the Greenalls demolished the mansion leaving only the garden, cottages and associated buildings. The estate also included a fernery and rose garden that are no longer in existence. The walled garden later passed to Warrington Borough Council. It is in now managed by the Walton Lea project to benefit the community and people with disabilities.
The garden has an area of one acre with intact walls. The land slopes from the south-facing wall toward the north-facing wall.
The garden is open to the public daily. Fruit and vegetables from the garden are on sale. The garden provides work opportunities for people with disabilities

It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.
History
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873“74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. The church is built in red sandstone with a slate roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a continuous nave and chancel of seven bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chapel at the east end of the south aisle, a vestry and a south porch. The tower is in three stages, with a Tudor west door, and a four-light west window. It has diagonal west buttresses and square east buttresses. In the middle stage are small windows, above which are clock faces and bell openings. On the summit is a crenellated parapet. The tower is about 76 feet (23 m) high

In 2006, the annual Creamfields dance festival was held in Daresbury after relocating from the disused Liverpool airport site it had occupied for the six previous years. Latchford is a suburban district and electoral ward of the unitary borough of Warrington, in Cheshire, England. It is around one mile south-east of Warrington town centre and has a total resident population of 7,856.
Latchford is a predominantly residential area, Latchford lies between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, and broadly consists of 19th century terraced housing and some open space. The Government has made recent changes to individual landlord's tax relief. Since April 2020 buy-to-let landlords have had to pay income tax on the entire rental income, regardless of how much is taken by mortgage interest. It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold
Greenall's ales are distributed by Carlsberg and brewed for them by Molson Coors in Burtonwood, near Warrington. Greenall's ales can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although they are gradually disappearing (thank God!). Often, only Greenall's Mild can be found. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel by English author Lewis Carroll (the pseudonym of Charles Dodgson). It tells of a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a subterranean fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children.
The Daniell Chapel contains one of the best-known features of All Saints', the Lewis Carroll Memorial Window. To mark the centenary of his birth, Carroll enthusiasts from all over the world subscribed to a memorial fund, which resulted in a gift to All Saints' of this striking and unusual stained glass window, dedicated in 1935.
The window was designed by the stained glass artist Geoffrey Webb and depicts a Nativity scene, at which both Carroll and Alice are present. Below the Nativity scene are 5 panels illustrated with characters and scenes from Alice in Wonderland including the White Rabbit, the Lizard, the Dodo, the Caterpillar, Fish-Footman, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, March Hare, Duchess, Gryphon, Mock Turtle, Knave and Queen of Hearts. The famous Cheshire Cat can be found in the centre of the fifth panel. The 3 centre panels contain verses from the Lewis Carroll's poem ˜Christmas Greetings (From a Fairy to a Child)'.
Geoffrey Webb's mark was a spider's web that he would incorporate into the design of his windows. The web can be found in the fifth section of the Window, just above the Queen of Hearts and includes the date ˜1935'.

Following the construction of the Sankey Brook Navigation, Bridgewater has been argued to be the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution in England, and it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as Canal Mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.
In September 1761, with his assistant Hugh Oldham, Brindley surveyed an extension from Longford Bridge to Hempstones, near Halton, Cheshire. He assisted in obtaining Parliamentary approval for the Bridgewater Canal Extension Act of 1762 which allowed the construction of an extension to the canal, from Manchester, to the River Mersey at Runcorn. Despite objections from the Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company, Royal assent was given on 24 March 1762. A junction, Waters Meeting, was created in Trafford Park, at which the new extension branched south through Stretford, Sale, Altrincham, Lymm and finally to Runcorn.
