The Government has made recent changes to individual landlord's tax relief. Since April 2020 buy-to-let landlords have had to pay income tax on the entire rental income, regardless of how much is taken by mortgage interest. We've been looking back at the way the village came together to celebrate 1000 years in 1923 and 1050 years in 1973. In 1923, Thelwall's celebrations helped to fund a new war memorial (Bell Lane), dedicated in 1925. So successful was the event that the pub was drunk dry and the caterers ran out of food and drinks. In May 1973, Thelwall Youth and Community Association organised Festival 1050 “ a four day event with a folk festival, a piano recital by Stephen Hough, an arts and crafts exhibition in the school and a procession that saw Miss Thelwall (Carol Moss) brought across the Manchester Ship Canal by the ferry boat where she was met by the Thelwall Rose Queen (Julie Lager) to a fanfare. They then joined a procession of vintage cars round the village.

Managing directors of insolvency firm Quantuma Jeremy Woodside and Frank Ofonagoro, both of the firm's Manchester office, have been appointed joint administrators.
The company was set up in 2016 and has built more than 1,100. It currently has live projects on 17 different sites - which aimed to create 1,700 new homes - employing 118 staff.
Current projects include delivering a 177 affordable homes scheme in Llandudno in partnership with ClwydAlyn and a 60 home scheme with Torus in Wigan.
In its last financial year, to the end of May, 2022, the company generated revenues of around £81m with a pre-tax profit of nearly £250,000.
Mr Woodside said:This is obviously a very difficult and uncertain time for the company, its employees and suppliers, and its wider stakeholders.

It is the first shipping company to transport liquefied petroleum gas known as LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) on inland waterways, playing a role in the rapid development of petrochemicals . It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold

The Bridgewater canal reach Stockton heath about 1772, the area around London Bridge and Thorn Marine developed over the next few years and became known as Stockton Quays, there was warehousing, an inn, toll house,Blacksmiths, stabling, barns, and bank riders cottages. one of these bank riders cottages became Thorn Marine.
A very successful packet boat service started up running from the London Bridge Inn to Manchester allowing the gentry to travel in style and comfort on the last part of there journey to Manchester, good were also shipped from the warehouse over the road, The boats were in them days pulled by horses, and unusually the horse for the packet boat were trotted along the towpath and were ridden by Bank riders who lived in what is now Thorn Marine.
The quays at thorn marine were also used by Caldwells to ship there tools spades, picks, etc for the gold rush in america and the First World War. The good were shipped to Liverpool where they were loaded onto sea going ships
During the First and second world wars the canal was also used to move munitions and men to Liverpool to be shipped across for the war effort.
Since we took over
We passed Thorn Marine in the spring of 1991 on our 25' Dawncraft Hammie on a two week trip around the Cheshire ring, we noticed it was looking a bit unloved and there was a for sale sign out side.
A few phone calls on our return home we discovered it was still for sale, but not with the agents anymore. After nearly 12 months of negotiations with the vendor and The Manchester ship Canal Company, we finally moved in on the 11th April 1992.
Over the next few years Margaret turned the business around from a fancy good shop back to a chandlery with help from Brian and Nigel when they were not working in their own careers. Brian decided in 1997 to stop paining and decorating and joined Margret working full time in the shop.

The garden was created circa 1864 as the kitchen garden to the Walton Lea mansion house. It was designed by Edward Walters and built by George Crosfield, the eldest son of soap manufacturing pioneer Joseph Crosfield. In the early 1900s the house was bought by the Armitage family. In 1923 it was bought by the Greenall family, owners of nearby Walton Hall. The Greenall and Crosfield families were political rivals and in 1925 the Greenalls demolished the mansion leaving only the garden, cottages and associated buildings. The estate also included a fernery and rose garden that are no longer in existence. The walled garden later passed to Warrington Borough Council. It is in now managed by the Walton Lea project to benefit the community and people with disabilities.
The garden has an area of one acre with intact walls. The land slopes from the south-facing wall toward the north-facing wall.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTFG - The Walton Arms is an impressive brick structure with tall decorated chimneys and stone mullion windows. Above the grand central entranceway is an interesting mock Tudor-style frontage which greets the visitor. Built in 1800 some fate must have befallen this mighty inn as it was rebuilt in 1875. At the turn of the century it served as a halt for horse-drawn buses.

The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873“74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 1873“74 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000
