Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG7WK - Editorial close-up of a learner stock-photo/gotonysmith-Driver.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>driver L plate on the bonnet of a black car, photographed with rain droplets across the paintwork and the front badge, grille and windscreen partly visible. The image is useful for UK motoring stories about provisional licence holders, young drivers, driving lessons, driving test delays, first cars, insurance affordability, road safety and the pressure on new motorists trying to become independent. In Great Britain, learners must display visible L plates on the front and rear of the vehicle, while Welsh learners may use D plates, so this image clearly signals supervised learner driving in England, Wales or wider UK contexts. The black car and prominent bonnet placement give the photograph a sharper performance-car feel, adding relevance to higher insurance premiums, powerful cars, parental concerns and the cost of motoring for teenagers and people in their twenties. It can also illustrate debates about long waits for practical driving test appointments, cancelled test slots, driving instructors, test centre capacity, transport needs, work access, apprenticeships and the wider social value of learning to drive. The wet bonnet, overcast reflected sky and water beading suggest rainy British weather, making the picture suitable for road safety, braking distance, visibility and cautious novice driving themes. It has strong editorial use for articles on accident risk among younger or inexperienced drivers, the transition from learner to newly qualified motorist, the expense of buying an older first car, road tax, repairs, fuel, tyres and comprehensive insurance. The image also works for consumer finance, family budgeting, personal mobility, car ownership and public policy stories where access to driving affects employment, education and social life. The simple red and white L symbol is instantly recognisable, making the photograph a clear stock image for learning to drive, driver training and new-driver safety in modern Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4BKY - Mold Road frontage and Macron Stand at STōK Cae Ras, the historic home football ground of Wrexham AFC in Wrexham, North Wales. Traditionally known as the Racecourse Ground and in Welsh as Cae Ras, the stadium stands close to Wrexham General railway station and forms one of the city's most recognisable sporting landmarks.
The photograph shows the curved exterior of the Macron Stand, with its silver cladding, red brick sections, glazed office frontage and prominent Macron sportswear branding. Red and white signs identify the stadium as STōK Cae Ras, reflecting the naming-rights agreement with the STōK Cold Brew Coffee brand. Turnstiles, entrance doors and club facilities are visible along the otherwise quiet Mold Road frontage, with an empty carriageway in the foreground and broken white clouds across a bright blue sky.
Wrexham AFC has played at the ground since the club's formation in 1864, apart from a short period during the nineteenth century. The stadium is recognised as the world's oldest international football ground still in continuous use. It hosted Wales' first home international fixture, against Scotland, on 5 March 1877, establishing its important place within Welsh and international football history.
The ground's profile has increased substantially following the acquisition of Wrexham AFC by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and the success of the documentary television series Welcome to Wrexham. This has attracted international visitors and football tourists to the city, while renewed investment has supported wider stadium improvements and redevelopment of the Kop end.
The image records the public-facing architecture of a traditional British football ground that combines nineteenth-century sporting heritage with modern commercial sponsorship, media attention and the continuing growth of Wrexham AFC.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4BMH - A large mural celebrating former footballer Joey Jones covers the gable end of The Turf public house on Mold Road, immediately beside Wrexham AFC's Racecourse Ground, also known by its Welsh name Cae Ras, in Wrexham, North Wales. The striking artwork depicts Jones wearing a Wrexham football shirt and raising a clenched fist against a bold red background, accompanied by a panel reading Joey Jones, Mr Wrexham .
Created by mural artist Paul Curtis, the public artwork commemorates one of the best-known figures associated with Wrexham AFC. Jones played more than 100 matches for the club and became particularly admired by supporters for his commitment, enthusiasm and strong connection with the town. He also played for Liverpool FC, winning major honours including the European Cup, and represented Wales at international level.
The mural occupies a prominent position on the pub's end wall, making it visible to football supporters and visitors approaching the stadium. Its red, grey, black and white colour scheme reflects Wrexham AFC's identity and turns the otherwise plain building facade into a highly recognisable piece of football street art.
The Turf is closely linked with the history and matchday culture of Wrexham AFC because of its location immediately alongside the stadium. The pub and football club have gained a much wider international profile following the television series Welcome to Wrexham and the ownership of the club by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The mural has consequently become both a local sporting tribute and a popular visitor landmark for football tourists travelling to Wrexham.
Photographed beneath a bright blue sky, the painted gable illustrates the strong relationship between public art, local identity, traditional football pubs and the renewed international interest in Wrexham and its football heritage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGWKRH - Colourful Croeso i Wrecsam mural beside the construction site for Wrexham AFC's new Kop Stand at the STōK Cae Ras, historically known as the Racecourse Ground, in Wrexham, North Wales. The Welsh wording means Welcome to Wrexham , combining the city's Welsh-language identity with the football club's increasingly prominent international profile.
The artwork depicts two illustrated supporters wearing traditional Welsh national dress, including tall black hats, red and green checked clothing and white lace-style collars. Between them is the red dragon crest associated with Wrexham AFC. The figures are painted against horizontal red, white and green bands, creating an immediately recognisable Welsh cultural image.
Behind the wall, construction structures, equipment and McLaren branding are visible at the new Kop End development. The contrast between the brightly painted welcome mural and the large modern building project links local identity, football heritage and supporter culture with the physical transformation of the historic stadium.
Wrexham and Wrecsam are the English and Welsh forms of the city's name. The use of Croeso i Wrecsam reflects the growing visibility of Welsh language and culture in public spaces around the city. The mural also provides a playful interpretation of Welsh national costume, welcoming residents, visiting supporters and football tourists arriving near the ground.
The new Kop Stand replaces the former terrace at the end of the Racecourse Ground and forms a major element of Wrexham AFC's stadium redevelopment. Its construction reflects increased demand for match tickets, the club's sporting growth and wider interest generated by the Welcome to Wrexham documentary series.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGWKWJ - Construction of Wrexham AFC's new Kop Stand at the STōK Cae Ras, historically known as the Racecourse Ground, in Wrexham, North Wales. The photograph shows the emerging steel framework of the new grandstand rising behind black construction hoardings beside the stadium.
The perimeter fencing has been decorated with Wrexham AFC imagery and supporter artwork. A large monochrome portrait of a football fan appears alongside bold red and white graphics, while another panel depicts a supporter facing a crowd of raised red scarves. McLaren Construction branding identifies the main contractor delivering the redevelopment. The colourful hoardings connect the active building site with the club's identity, supporters and internationally recognised Welcome to Wrexham story.
The Populous-designed Kop is intended to replace the former standing terrace at the Crispin Lane end of the ground. The approved initial scheme provided 5,500 places, including safe-standing provision, with a subsequent proposal seeking to increase the stand to as many as 7,750 seats through an additional upper tier. This would take the overall stadium capacity to just over 18,000 and restore the Racecourse Ground to a fully enclosed, four-sided football venue.
The redevelopment is also intended to help the stadium achieve UEFA Category 4 standards, improving its ability to accommodate international football and other significant sporting events. Work includes structural steel, precast concrete terracing, roofing, external facades, internal accommodation and modern spectator facilities.
The new Kop forms part of wider investment in Wrexham's sporting infrastructure and public realm. The project reflects the rapid growth in interest surrounding the historic Welsh football club, increased matchday demand and ambitions to create a larger modern stadium while retaining the identity of the world's oldest international football ground still in use.

It can illustrate stories about local event promotion, QR code ticketing, small entertainment businesses, community venues, affordable weekend activities, children's entertainment, Welsh pop culture and independent wrestling in towns and cities across the UK. The poster's strong typography, dramatic wrestler portraits, family friendly wording and Wrex-Slam title make it visually clear and commercially useful for stock searches connected with pro wrestling, live shows, sports posters, Wrexham events and North Wales community entertainment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EBGJMW - Vote Green campaign placard is fixed to a wooden post outside a red brick terraced house in a British residential street, creating a topical editorial image for UK council election coverage. The photograph shows grassroots Green Party campaigning at street level, with a second Vote Green sign visible further along the road, suggesting neighbourhood support and local doorstep politics rather than a staged party press event. The image is useful for stories about the Green Party of England and Wales, local elections, voter choice, protest voting, climate politics, environmental policy, tactical voting, progressive politics and changing party loyalties in urban and suburban communities. It can also illustrate the rise of Green campaigning under leader Zack Polanski, whose leadership has been associated with sharper left-wing messaging, stronger stock-photo/gotonysmith-Polling.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>polling visibility and increased attention from Labour, Liberal Democrat, Conservative and Reform UK opponents. The scene works well for coverage of local council contests, ward campaigns, candidate leaflets, garden posters, political signage, door-to-door canvassing and the contest for disillusioned Labour voters. It also suits more critical editorial use around campaign controversies, candidate vetting, accusations from rival parties, debates over antisemitism, policing comments, Palestine-related campaigning, public confidence, party discipline and the practical challenge of translating national polling into council seats. The wet road, plain terraced housing, overcast light and ordinary street setting give the image a documentary feel, emphasising everyday democratic participation, household political expression and the way national political arguments become visible in small local streets during an election campaign. It has strong stock value for newspapers, magazines, political blogs, polling analysis, civic education and features about fragmentation in British politics beyond the traditional two-party contest.

The sign uses the Labour Party's familiar red branding and large white lettering, making it immediately recognisable as a campaign message aimed at passing pedestrians, local residents and voters. The suburban street setting, front garden, fence post, cloudy sky, terraced houses and distant railway bridge give the photograph strong documentary value as an everyday view of politics appearing in ordinary residential streets rather than at a rally, press conference or formal party event. The image is commercially useful for stories about UK elections, local council campaigns, general elections, party canvassing, voter identity, garden posters, political participation, campaign visibility, grassroots support and the way political loyalties are signalled in local communities. It can also illustrate wider themes around British democracy, doorstep politics, constituency campaigning, party branding, swing voters, political persuasion, neighbourhood opinion and the contest for attention during election periods. Because the image shows a campaign sign rather than identifiable campaigners or voters, it works well as a neutral stock photograph for coverage of election season, polling day build-up, political advertising, manifesto debate, local government, parliamentary politics and public engagement. The wet-looking street, overcast sky and ordinary housing backdrop add a recognisably British feel, useful for news, politics, civic life and social commentary. As a documentary stock image, it records a small but visible expression of democratic campaigning, where national party politics is translated into a simple front-garden banner on a local street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFER1D - A penalty charge notice from Cardiff council, is an official notification that you have been found to have committed a minor offence, for which there is a standard penalty charge. PCN are used to streamline the process of penalising minor offenders, without the expense and complication of legal proceedings.
Any offence that has a standard penalty charge, is not an offence that you can be prosecuted for. A penalty charge is not the same thing as an enforceable fine. That being said, you can't just ignore a PCN. You will need to either appeal against it or pay it.
Cardiff council issues Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) for a number of reasons. However, the most common reasons why you might either find one attached to your vehicle or be sent one by post, are for minor traffic rule infractions and parking offences.
If you are issued with a PCN, what do you need to do with it? Can you ignore it, or do you have to pay it? Or is there some way to make an appeal against the PCN?
You can't pay a penalty charge notice in instalments. There are three ways to pay a Cardiff council penalty charge notice. You can pay online, as long as you know the PCN number and have a credit or debit card. There is also a payment hotline that is open 7 days a week, around the clock. You can call 029 2044 5900 and give the PCN number, and then pay using a payment card. Lastly, you can make out a cheque or postal order to Cardiff Council, write the PCN number on the back, and then post it to the following address:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFER1H - A statue of Aneurin Bevan stands at the western end of Queen Street, Cardiff, Wales in recognition of Aneurin Bevan (1897 1960) who is credited with founding the National Health Service (NHS). It has been described as perhaps one of Wales' most iconic statues
Aneurin Nye Bevan PC (15 November 1897 6 July 1960) was a Welsh Labour Party politician, noted for tenure as Minister of Health in Clement Attlee's government in which he spearheaded the creation of the British National Health Service. He is also known for his wider contribution to the founding of the British welfare state.
Bevan is widely regarded as one of the most influential left-wing politicians in British history.
The statue was erected in 1987, designed by Robert Thomas.
Bevan became Labour MP for Ebbw Vale in 1929, subsequently an effective public speaker known for his left wing views and being temporarily expelled from the party on two occasions (one of them for his opposition to nuclear weapons). He was elected to the Labour's National Executive and became Minister for Health in the post-war Labour government, where he was behind the nationalisation of healthcare and founding of the NHS. As Minister for Housing he took steps to solve the post-war housing shortage. Bevan remained MP for Tredegar until his death in 1960.
The statue was commissioned by South Glamorgan County Council and designed by Welsh sculptor, Robert Thomas, who also created a number of other sculptures in Cardiff city centre. The statue was erected in 1987 at the far end of Queen Street. It is the only statue of Bevan (as of 2021) in the United Kingdom.
The figure of Bevan, wearing a suit and leaning forward in a typical pose, is cast in bronze and stands on top of a polished granite pedestal. The statue is 1.83 metres (6.0 ft) in height, while the pedestal is 2.14 metres (7.0 ft) high. In gold on the front of the pedestal are the words Founder of the National Health Service.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CM - This photograph shows the BBC Cymru Wales headquarters building at Central Square in Cardiff city centre, home to the national broadcaster for Wales. The modern structure features a combination of pale stone cladding and large vertical glass panels, with prominent BBC Cymru Wales signage clearly visible on the upper facade. The building forms a key part of Cardiff's Central Square regeneration area, adjacent to Cardiff Central railway station.
The image was taken after rainfall, with wet road surfaces and pavements creating reflective textures across the foreground. Traffic lights glow against the damp streets, while a small number of pedestrians move through the scene, dressed for cool, unsettled weather. The sky is overcast with patches of lighter cloud, suggesting changeable conditions typical of the Welsh climate.
BBC Cymru Wales operates television, radio, and digital services in both Welsh and English, and the Central Square development represents a significant investment in modern broadcasting infrastructure and urban renewal. The surrounding streetscape, street furniture, and planting reinforce the contemporary civic character of the area.
The photograph captures both the architectural presence of a major public service broadcaster and the everyday atmosphere of a working city following rain, blending modern media infrastructure with the rhythms of urban life in Cardiff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CR - This image shows an ornate stained glass panel depicting the Welsh red dragon, known in Welsh as Y Ddraig Goch, a powerful national symbol of Wales. The dragon is rendered in vivid shades of red and orange with raised wings and an alert stance, set against a background of green and yellow glass, colours traditionally associated with Welsh identity. The stained glass is housed within a stone arched frame, suggesting the interior of a historic or traditionally styled bar or pub in Cardiff.
The craftsmanship highlights fine leadwork and textured glass, typical of decorative stained glass used in heritage hospitality interiors across Wales. The dragon's posture, claws raised and tail curled, echoes medieval and Celtic imagery long associated with Welsh folklore, resistance, and national pride.
The surrounding stonework and subdued interior lighting imply a historic building or one designed to evoke heritage character. The glass appears to be illuminated from behind, either by daylight or internal lighting, enhancing the saturated colours and giving the dragon a dramatic, almost heraldic presence.
Such imagery is commonly found in Cardiff city-centre pubs and bars that celebrate local culture and history, blending traditional Welsh symbolism with modern hospitality use. The image reflects the enduring visibility of national identity in everyday urban spaces and the continued role of pubs and bars as cultural as well as social landmarks in Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CY - This image shows the former Royal Hotel building on St Mary Street in Cardiff city centre, a prominent Victorian-era structure that once operated as one of the city's notable hotels and now houses the Slug & Lettuce bar and restaurant. The stone-fronted facade, with its symmetrical window arrangement and classical detailing, reflects Cardiff's late nineteenth-century commercial architecture and the city's expansion during the industrial and dockland boom years.
The words ROYAL HOTEL remain clearly visible across the upper facade, preserving the building's historic identity despite its modern hospitality use. At street level, contemporary branding and glazing for Slug & Lettuce sit within the original architectural framework, illustrating the adaptive reuse of historic city-centre buildings common across UK high streets.
The photograph appears to have been taken in daylight during warmer months, with people casually dressed and moving along St Mary Street. The pavement looks wet, suggesting recent rain, with subtle reflections adding texture to the urban scene. Overhead tram or utility wires are visible, reinforcing the dense city-centre environment.
St Mary Street is one of Cardiff's principal pedestrian routes, linking shopping, nightlife, and tourism areas, and this building forms part of a continuous historic streetscape that blends heritage architecture with contemporary leisure and retail uses. The image captures both Cardiff's architectural past and its present-day role as a lively capital city destination.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3D2 - A close view of an illuminated exterior sign for Playhouse Gentlemen's Club in Cardiff city centre. The circular sign, clearly displaying the name Playhouse along with heraldic-style graphics, is mounted above street level and lit with warm bulbs, designed to attract attention within a busy urban streetscape.
The venue operates as part of Cardiff's night-time leisure economy, which includes bars, clubs, live music venues and adult entertainment establishments concentrated around the city centre. Signs such as this play a functional and symbolic role, marking spaces associated with nightlife, consumption and adult-oriented leisure within the public realm.
The surrounding architecture reflects Cardiff's historic commercial streets, with upper-floor residential or office accommodation above ground-level leisure uses. The contrast between traditional building façades and modern illuminated signage illustrates how historic city centres adapt to changing patterns of entertainment and economic activity.
Photographed under conditions where artificial lighting is prominent, the image is well suited for editorial use covering nightlife economies, urban culture, adult entertainment regulation, city-centre leisure districts, and debates around the role of such venues within modern British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3D6 - The exterior of the former James Howell & Co department store on St Mary Street in Cardiff city centre, photographed in daylight under bright but overcast conditions. The building retains its original carved stone signage reading James Howell & Co above the main entrance, a clear surviving marker of its long retail history.
James Howell & Co was one of Wales's best-known independent department stores, trading from this site for over 150 years and forming a cornerstone of Cardiff's traditional shopping district. The architecture reflects early twentieth-century department store design, with a symmetrical façade, tall pilasters and large display windows intended to convey stability, quality and civic pride.
Visible within the shopfront windows are contemporary panels and graphics referencing a New Era , indicating redevelopment and reuse following the store's closure. This juxtaposition of historic branding and modern regeneration messaging highlights the broader transformation of British high streets, where long-established department stores have struggled amid changing consumer behaviour, online retail and shifting urban economics.
The image captures a moment of transition in Cardiff's retail landscape, where heritage commercial buildings are being reconsidered for new purposes. It is well suited for editorial use covering high-street decline, retail regeneration, Welsh urban history, department store culture, and the changing identity of city-centre shopping streets in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3DB - Cardiff Market (Welsh: Marchnad Caerdydd), also known as Cardiff Central Market (Welsh: Marchnad Ganolog Caerdydd) and as the Market Building, is a Victorian indoor market in the Castle Quarter of Cardiff city centre, capital city of Wales.
Originally the site of Cardiff gaol, the gallows were located on the site of the current St. Mary Street entrance, where Dic Penderyn was hanged on 13 August 1831.
The market was designed by the Borough Surveyor, William Harpur, and opened in May 1891. A farmers' market is known to have existed at the site since the 18th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3DH - Cardiff Market (Welsh: Marchnad Caerdydd), also known as Cardiff Central Market (Welsh: Marchnad Ganolog Caerdydd) and as the Market Building, is a Victorian indoor market in the Castle Quarter of Cardiff city centre, capital city of Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3Y98N - A liquor store is a retail business that predominantly sells prepackaged liquors (typically in bottles), wine or beer, usually intended to be consumed off the store's premises. Depending on region and local idiom, they may also be called an off-licence (in the UK and Ireland), off-sale (in parts of Canada and the US), bottle shop, bottle store or, colloquially, bottle-o (in Australia, New Zealand and parts of Canada), liquor store (in Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand) or other similar terms. A very limited number of jurisdictions have an alcohol monopoly. In US states that are alcoholic beverage control (ABC) states, the term ABC store may be used.
The Twenty-first Amendment of the United States Constitution allows states to regulate the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. State regulations vary widely. The majority of the U.S. states have laws specifying which alcoholic beverages must be sold in specialty liquor stores and which may be sold in other venues.
In seventeen alcoholic beverage control (ABC) states, the specialty liquor stores are owned and operated exclusively by the state government, where liquor stores often sell only spirits or sometimes sell spirits and wine but not beer. ABC-run stores may be called ABC stores or state stores.
In Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Texas, liquor stores are also known as package stores
locally in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and areas bordering these states the term pack or packie is used as well, because purchased liquor must be packaged in sealed bottles or other containers when it is taken from the store
In three states (Kansas, Minnesota, and Utah), only low-point beer may be sold in supermarkets or gas stations. In Utah, stores not owned and operated by the state are known as Package Agencies. These are liquor outlets operated by private individuals or corporate entities under contract with the state for the purpose of selling packaged liquor

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9M0F - In 1883 Robert Clare Baxter was born. He was a remarkable businessman who was behind the huge success of Clare's Department Store. Robert Clare Baxter was born into a poor family in Runcorn and started off working in a drapers at the weekend. He was later promoted to buyer and manager and the owner then helped him set up his own business.
In the early 20th century Clare's premises were occupied by Arthurs Pioneer Stores. Arthurs was taken over by WS Williams of Llanrwst who also owned the Loyal Store on the opposite side of Mostyn St. One of the shops 'main features was the variety of serge's and tweeds spun at Williams own factory in Dolgellau. These could be made up into whatever the customer required particulary boating, cycling and touring outfits for the ladies.
Clare's Department Store was established in 1927 by the Baxter family. Quickly built a reputation within the community for offering good, friendly reliable service to all their customers. Robert Clare Baxter rebuilt it as the present Clare's Department Store. It became a ladies dressmakers and milliners allowing customers to have access to a respectable fashion store.
When Robert Baxter died, the business was taken over by his son Dougie and grandchildren John and Ann. The business was passed down and continued to operate as a family business. It remained successful and was continually growing and thriving.
Clare's Department Store was acquired by Ulster Stores in 2002. It was instantly recognised as an exciting opportunity for the future. The store is a well known destination not only for local shoppers but also for the many tourists who visit Llandudno. When Ulster Stores took over the Lamson Pneumatic Device was removed. This whizzed payment by tubes to the cash office and sent back the change. You can still see the original office windows at the back of the GF.
Clares has changed over the years and moved with the times and customers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9MCD - A SINISTER monk who predicts death and misfortune is just one of the ghosts reported to haunt the Liverpool Arms pub in Conwy.
Legend has it that sightings of the sinister monk are said to warn of a death or some form of bad luck, and a strong smell of vanilla, one of the medieval cargoes carried by ships, has coincided with appearances.
The ghost of the cook is accompanied by an unexplained smell of roast beef that has lingered in the pub, whilst the ghost of a landlord is said to be that of a man who drowned in the estuary.
Looking back in the Weekly News archives, speaking in June 1980, former landlord Jacqui Plumb said she had often had objects mysteriously disappear in the pub and reported a terrified visitor claiming the bed in the pub's attic shaking violently.
But Jacqui herself saw the spectre of the monk right after a member of her family was involved in a serious accident.
I went into the spare bedroom. This is the tower room and it was about 4pm. When I opened the door I saw him just across the room, a monk with his hands together kneeling and praying, she said.
I was so amazed that I closed my eyes and shook my head to make sure I was actually seeing something. I opened my eyes and he was still there.
Later in the April of 1991, barman Andrew Young, 20, was working in the pub when he claimed he encountered a ghostly apparition at the back of the pub.
Andrew, of the Castle View Estate, claimed a ghost standing at around six and a half feet in height made a lunge for him, causing him to drop a crate of beer and rip his shirt. He claimed the ghost was accompanied by a small boy.
He kept beckoning me over and over again but every time he came forward I moved back, he said.
Then he came at me with a look of pure evil and I just panicked. I have never been so scared in my life.
The landlord at the time, Trevor Gresty, even reported the incident to the Bass Brewery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0MMXN - The Pierhead Building (Welsh: Adeilad y Pierhead) is a Grade I listed building in Cardiff Bay, Wales. One of Cardiff's most familiar landmarks, it was built in 1897 as the headquarters for the Bute Dock Company.
The Pierhead Building is part of the estate of the Senedd (Welsh Parliament
Welsh: Senedd Cymru), which also includes the Senedd building and Tŷ Hywel. The clock on the building is unofficially known as the Baby Big Ben or the Big Ben of Wales.
The building was built in 1897 and designed by the English architect William Frame. It was a replacement for the headquarters of the Bute Dock Company which burnt down in 1892. Frame's mentor was William Burges, with whom he worked on the rebuilding of Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch until Burges's death in 1881.
The Bute Dock Company was renamed the Cardiff Railway Company in 1897. A coat of arms on the building's façade bears the company's motto Wrth ddŵr a thân (by water and fire), encapsulating the elements creating the steam power which transformed Wales.
The building became the administrative office for the Port of Cardiff in 1947.
The 1897 clock mechanism, by William Potts & Sons of Leeds, was removed and replaced with an electronic motor, and auctioned off by British Rail and sold to an American collector in 1973. It was returned to Cardiff in 2005 and in 2011 was restored by Smith of Derby Group and installed as a piece of contemporary art created by the artist Marianne Forrest in Cardiff city centre.
Architecture
Incorporating a French-Gothic Renaissance theme, the Pierhead boasts details such as hexagonal chimneys, carved friezes, gargoyles, and a highly ornamental and distinctive clock tower. Its exterior is finished in glazed terracotta blocks supplied at the end of the 19th century by J. C. Edwards & Co. of Acrefair, near Ruabon in Wrexham County Borough
they were once described as one of the most successful producers of terracotta in the world.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NBWGJ2 - Concept still life showing British pound banknotes and coins arranged around a paper label reading Pension , illustrating pension saving, workplace pension contributions and the investment of retirement money in England and Wales. The image uses familiar UK cash, including Bank of England notes and pound coins, to represent regular contributions into a pension pot, long-term saving, financial planning and retirement income. In defined contribution pensions, money paid by the worker, employer and tax relief is invested with the aim of building a fund for later life, although the value can rise or fall depending on markets and charges. UK workplace pension rules are based on automatic enrolment, where eligible employees are usually enrolled into a pension scheme and employers must contribute. Official guidance states that all employers must provide a workplace pension scheme, while MoneyHelper explains that the usual minimum total workplace pension contribution is 8%, commonly made up of employee contributions, government tax relief and an employer contribution. This image is useful for editorial and commercial themes including pensions, savings, retirement planning, personal finance, cost of living, investment risk, pension pots, employer contributions, financial advice, tax relief, pensions policy, household budgeting and long-term security. It can also illustrate debates about pension adequacy, low savings rates, ageing populations, retirement income gaps and whether workers are contributing enough for later life. The close-up arrangement of cash gives the photograph a simple, direct financial message without showing a person, making it suitable for articles, explainers, reports and web pages about pensions in England, Wales and the wider UK. The image should be treated as a general pension concept rather than advice about any specific pension product, provider or investment choice.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWFMR - A fish and chip shop, sometimes referred to as a chip shop, is a (often fast food) restaurant that specialises in selling fish and chips. Usually, fish and chip shops provide takeaway service, although some have seating facilities. Fish and chip shops may also sell other foods, including variations on their core offering such as battered sausage and burgers, to regional cuisine such as Greek or Indian food.
Variations on the name include fish bar, fishery (in Yorkshire), fish shop and chip shop. In the United Kingdom including Northern Ireland, they are colloquially known as a chippy or fishy, while in the rest of Ireland and the Aberdeen area, they are known as chippers.
The word chip-shop is first recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary in 1953. Chippy or chippie was first recorded in 1961. Occasionally the type of fish will be specified, as in 'Cod-n-Chips'.
In Scotland, the fish tends to be haddock, whereas in England it tends to be cod. This is because both fish tend to be sourced from Scottish waters in the North Sea and then shipped around the UK. Haddock was thought to taste better than cod when fresh, while cod tasted better a few days later. In the days before refrigerated haulage this meant that haddock would taste bad by the time it made it out of Scotland, while the cod would still taste good if it took a few days to reach its destination. Hake, pollock, whiting, and plaice are also seen at many chip shops. In Scotland, 'special fish' is a variant where the haddock is breadcrumbed instead of battered.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7NHH - Concept image showing English sterling banknotes and stacked coins beside a lit domestic gas hob, illustrating the way rising gas prices and wider household energy costs affect home budgets in England and across the United Kingdom. The photograph combines visible cash with a blue gas flame to symbolise utility bills, inflation, cost of living pressure, and the strain placed on ordinary households as domestic fuel charges increase. The use of Bank of England notes makes the image especially relevant for English, UK-wide and Westminster-focused coverage of consumer finances, energy affordability, and the real cash impact of bill rises on family spending. It suggests the practical reality of budgeting in the kitchen, where money for heating, cooking and essential energy use must compete with food, rent, mortgage payments, transport, council tax and other everyday commitments. The gas burner acts as a strong visual shorthand for domestic fuel consumption, meter readings, tariffs, supplier charges, standing charges, and the continuing public debate around energy prices, affordability, and support for households under financial pressure. Suitable for editorial use on stories about gas bills, utility costs, fuel poverty, personal finance, inflation, debt, arrears, economic hardship, and household budgeting, the image also works more broadly as a symbol of financial stress, shrinking disposable income, and the choices facing low and middle income homes during periods of high energy prices. Because the money is shown as physical notes and coins rather than a digital banking screen, the image has an immediate, everyday realism that suits newspaper, magazine, business and consumer reporting on the burden of rising gas bills. It also lends itself to stories about winter heating worries, the energy price cap, consumer confidence, household resilience, budgeting advice, and the continued political sensitivity of domestic utility costs in Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KAHRW4 - Betty Campbell MBE (6 November 1934 13 October 2017,born Rachel Elizabeth Johnson) was a Welsh community activist, who was Wales' first black head teacher. Born into a poor household in Butetown, she won a scholarship to the Lady Margaret High School for Girls in Cardiff. Campbell later trained as a teacher, eventually becoming head teacher of Mount Stuart Primary School in Butetown, Cardiff. She put into practice innovative ideas on the education of children and was actively involved in the community.
Betty Johnson became pregnant at the age of 17, while she was doing her A-levels. She left school when she married Rupert Campbell, a fitter's mate, in 1953. Betty Campbell had four children, one of whom had special needs. She had 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In 1960, when Campbell already had three children, she discovered that Cardiff Teacher Training College had started to enrol female students. Campbell applied, and was one of only six female students to be admitted.
Campbell's first teaching post was in Llanrumney. She soon returned to Butetown, getting a job at Mount Stuart Primary School, where she taught for 28 years. As a black teacher she experienced hostility from some parents: They hadn't seen a black teacher before. It was as if you could do a job, but if you're black you weren't quite as good.
Campbell was inspired by a trip to the US where she learned about anti-slavery activists like Harriet Tubman and the civil rights movement. When she became Wales' first black head teacher at Mount Stuart in the 1970s, she began teaching children about slavery, black history and the system of apartheid which operated at the time in South Africa.
Speaking later in the Senedd, Campbell explained: I was determined that I was going to become one of those people and enhance the black spirit, black culture as much as I could. Campbell helped to create Black History Month and taught a series of workshops on the role of Butetown's citizens

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X72 - This image shows bilingual signage at the entrance to Cardiff Market, also known in Welsh as Marchnad Caerdydd, located in the heart of Cardiff city centre. The sign prominently displays the Welsh-language name above the English wording Cardiff Market , reflecting Wales's official bilingual status and the everyday public use of the Welsh language.
Cardiff Market is a Grade II listed Victorian indoor market dating back to the late 19th century and has long been a focal point for local trade, food retail, and social life in the Welsh capital. The use of Welsh alongside English on public signage is part of a wider national effort to promote and normalise the Welsh language in civic spaces.
The photograph captures the arched architectural detail of the market entrance, with decorative lighting adding warmth and atmosphere, suggesting an evening or festive setting. The combination of historic typography, traditional materials, and bilingual text highlights the intersection of heritage, language, and contemporary urban life in modern Wales.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering Welsh language policy, bilingual Britain, Welsh culture and identity, historic markets, Cardiff tourism, and the preservation of civic heritage in Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K56CWT - GDPR to be scrapped in favour of UK data privacy regime
The UK will scrap the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union's data privacy regime, and replace it with an alternative system in the UK, the digital and culture secretary Michelle Donelan has told the Conservative Party conference.
Donelan said the proposed new system, details of which have not yet been revealed, will be simpler and clearer for businesses to navigate.
No longer will our businesses be shackled by lots of unnecessary red tape, said Donelan. We will be replacing GDPR with our own business and consumer-friendly British data protection system.
Our plan will protect consumer privacy and keep their data safe, whilst retaining our data adequacy so businesses can trade freely.
The GDPR, which aims to enhance individuals' rights to their own personal data, took effect across the UK, the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) in May 2018. It applies to all businesses that process data held by anyone in these regions, regardless of where the business is based.
The Data Reform Bill introduced in the summer is on hold while ministers review their approach. Nadine Norris, the former digital and culture secretary, said in June that measures in the bill would increase financial penalties for those pestering people with nuisance calls and minimise the number of cookie pop-ups people see on the internet.
Donelan's speech in Birmingham came after the prime minister announced the exemption of tens of thousands of employers from reporting obligations such as gender pay gap reporting as part of a sweeping package of reforms to cut red tape .
Small and medium-sized businesses with fewer than 250 employees are currently exempt from regulatory requirements such as gender pay gap and executive pay ratio reporting.
The government yesterday increased this threshold to 500 employees for all new regulations under development and said that it would apply this to retained EU law

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JR3MND - Tory government has launched a defensive social media campaign after MPs faced anger from their constituents over last week's sewage vote, in which an amendment to the environment bill that would have placed a legal duty on water companies not to pump waste into rivers was voted down.
Many Conservative MPs posted almost identical statements on Monday morning after a weekend of anger over the vote. Government sources confirmed to the Guardian that the information in these posts had been supplied by No 10.
MPs including Steve Brine, Ben Everitt, Michael Fabricant, Anne Marie Morris and Sally-Ann Hart published similar explainers about the vote on their websites.
Only 22 Conservatives rebelled against the government last week, after the environment secretary, George Eustice, recommended that MPs vote against the amendment.
Martin Salter, the chief policy adviser of the Angling Trust, said: We know from the unconvincing, identikit replies received by our members that government MPs had been instructed to issue with a standard response to constituents which avoided the question of taking action to combat sewage pollution in favour of yet more endless monitoring.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JR3MNJ - The British Rail Class 31 diesel locomotives, also known as the Brush Type 2 and previously as Class 30, were built by Brush Traction from 1957-62. They were numbered in two series, D5500-D5699 and D5800-D5862. Construction of the first locomotive was completed in the final week of September 1957, and the handing-over took place on 31 October. The first Class 31 entered service in November 1957, after the launch of the Class 20 locomotive and was one of the Pilot Scheme locomotives ordered by British Railways to replace steam traction.
Engines
They were originally built with Mirrlees JVS12T 1,250 bhp (930 kW) (D5500D5519) and 1,365 bhp (1,018 kW) engines and Brush electrical equipment, but the engines were not successful and in 1964 D5677 was fitted with an English Electric 12SVT engine (similar to the 12CSVT used in the Class 37 but without an intercooler) rated at 1,470 bhp (1,100 kW). The trial proved successful, and between 1965 and 1969 the entire class was re-engined. The de-rated engine was used as it was the maximum the electrical system could accept.
Classification
The Mirrlees-engined locomotives were originally known as Class 30 under TOPS, with re-engined examples joining Class 31. The class was originally intended for service on the Eastern Region, but gradually became common in both the Western and London Midland regions too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRA4HC - Four framed examples of British railway advertising and printed ephemera are displayed together at Llangollen Railway station in North Wales. The upper pair are colourful destination posters promoting rail travel to the Cornish resorts of Penzance and Newquay. The Penzance design shows the harbour, rooftops and waterfront beneath a blue sky, while the Newquay image presents sweeping beaches, cliffs, sea and a swimmer wearing a red bathing cap. Both use bold place names and idealised holiday imagery to encourage passengers to travel by train.
The lower frames contain more functional railway notices. One advertises weekday day-excursion bookings from Birkenhead and Liverpool, using a timetable-style layout of destinations, fares and journey information. The other promotes the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, held over several July days, with restrained typography and the limited colour palette typical of mid-twentieth-century publicity. Together, the four pieces show how the railway marketed national holiday destinations and regional leisure events.
The posters date from the post-war period, including examples associated with 1952 and 1962, when British Railways used commissioned illustration, strong lettering and carefully composed scenery to sell rail travel. Such material is now collected as railwayana and valued for its graphic design, social history and nostalgic view of British tourism.
The display is at Llangollen Railway, a volunteer-run standard-gauge heritage line operating through the Dee Valley between Llangollen and Corwen over part of the former Ruabon to Barmouth route. The preserved station gives the advertisements an appropriate historic context, linking the visual culture of the national network with present-day steam and diesel operations. The framed arrangement records changing styles of transport promotion, seaside leisure, excursion travel and cultural tourism in Britain during the 1950s and 1960s.

With the entire Class 31s being allocated to the Eastern Region when new, it is quite possible that 31 271 (as D5801) could have worked over the Nene Valley Line right through to Northampton and even after 1964 (when the Northampton Line closed) on freight duties between Peterborough and Oundle or on ironstone traffic from Nassington Quarries to Peterborough and beyond. Wansford station was then closed - these were the pre-NVR days - so 31 271 would have run through Wansford Station non-stop and with passenger trains at least, considerably faster than it is permitted to run today. Perhaps one day some photographic evidence of such runs will come to light!
From Toton it was 'stored unserviceable' from 1st May 1997, its final passenger working having been the 'Multiple Marauder' Rail Tour from Kensington Olympia to Crewe, paired with 31 308, on 10th August 1996.

June 20, 2013 in 19th century, Brymbo, Industrial archaeology
Although we might think of Wrexham as a largely industrial town, with the Brymbo district as its economic powerhouse through much of the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution in north Wales was actually something of a damp squib. A. H. Dodd's classic text on the subject, first published in the 1920s, explained some of the reasons why: remote sites and poor communications restricted trade to the local area, whereas the coal and iron of south Wales had access to deep-sea ports (giving particularly direct access to the lucrative Irish market). The collieries west of Wrexham, old, smaller-scale workings on shallow seams, were a world away from the deep mines of the Rhondda, and Brymbo's steelworks was unusual in its hilly, land-locked site. By the 1900s many of the area's coal and iron operations had ceased.
The small-scale and localised development of industry in the district led to a distinctive landscape, where a patchwork of agricultural land was intermingled with small collieries, related industries such as brickworks, and villages spreading across former areas of common land. The last of these smaller scale industrial sites survived through to the 1950s, 60s and 70s
in Brymbo, a particularly interesting one lasted until the 1980s. There are now few buildings near Pentresaeson crossroads, and there were never very many, but you can still see one of the main landmarks of the immediate area, the old Taylor Brothers iron foundry and its distinctive chimney, just down the township road to Bwlchgwyn alongside the bed of the former Minera railway line. Back in the 19th century this would have been a good site for a small ironworks, with reliable supplies of coal in the immediate vicinity, a tributary stream of the Gwenfro running nearby and, from the 1840s, the railway giving vital access

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRAHW1 - The business began 8 years ago and was originally set up on my narrow boat making homemade tea, cake, coffee and preserves, as 'Cake on The Cut'.
I've always had a great love of the countryside, gathering wild ingredients and being inventive in the kitchen, which has slowly evolved into Gangplank Spirits & Preserves. I've travelled all over the UK canal network making and selling my produce.
The business has flourished and this year we have expanded and become a limited company, we now sell our products from the boat, at land based events, on the website and have also begun supplying stockists!

Mal Edwards was the last lengthsman* to work the Newport and Shrewsbury canals into the 1960s. He can also be seen on some websites as lock-keeper at Grindley Brook Staircase.
lengthsman: In rural areas, a lengthsman was a man who took pride in keeping his district neat and tidy, well swept and free from litter. On the canals, a lengthsman was responsible for patrolling his length, looking for leaks, seeing to routine maintenance, cutting back vegetation etc.
I started working on the canal when I was only 14. I was a lengths man on the Shrewsbury, the canal. It was my job to cut hedges and to keep the toe path clear.
Since then, I've carried aluminium, coal, feldspar, salt and tinned salmon. For a short time I was captain of the prettiest Joshua boat ever built, or so the other boatmen said. She was called The Apple. She was nice with only 20 tonnes on but any more and she would sit funny.
The canal was full of characters then, like George Page and Chocolate Charlie Atkins. In 1965 we both used to carry aluminium to Wolverhampton and when it was quiet he showed me how to make rope fenders. It wasn't long before I was making my own which were sold to the pleasure boaters in the summer months.
Wages weren't good on the waterways and the money came in handy, buttons, puddings, all boats have them even to this day. It wasn't long before I became a full-time fender maker. I even learned to make rope.
He says, (presumably when he was at Grindley Brook) for a few years I lived in a house near the canal but the pull of the waterways brought me back onto a boat. Now it's just a short walk to work in the morning. Round the bend and over the lock

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRAHX2 - A bascule bridge (also referred to as a drawbridge or a lifting bridge) is a moveable bridge with a counterweight that continuously balances a span, or leaf, throughout its upward swing to provide clearance for boat traffic. It may be single- or double-leafed.
The name comes from the French term for balance scale, which employs the same principle. Bascule bridges are the most common type of movable span because they open quickly and require relatively little energy to operate, while providing the possibility for unlimited vertical clearance for marine traffic.
There are three types of bascule bridge and the counterweights to the span may be located above or below the bridge deck.
The fixed-trunnion (sometimes a Chicago bascule) rotates around a large axle that raises the span(s). The Chicago bascule name derives from the location where it is widely used, and is a refinement by Joseph Strauss of the fixed-trunnion.
The rolling lift trunnion (sometimes a Scherzer rolling lift), raises the span by rolling on a track resembling a rocking-chair base. The Scherzer rolling lift is a refinement patented in 1893 by American engineer William Donald Scherzer.
The rarer Rall type combines rolling lift with longitudinal motion on trunnions when opening.[4] It was patented (1901) by Theodor Rall. One of the few surviving examples is the Broadway Bridge (1913), in Portland, Oregon

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP8T9A - Why is the shortage of HRT products particularly prominent?
Some HRT products, particularly gels, are in short supply. The causes are complex and multifactorial, according to the British Menopause Society, Faculty of Sexual Reproductive Healthcare, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).7 In a joint statement they say, HRT supply has not always been reliable in recent years, with multiple factors including manufacturing capacity, understanding current and future demand, and disruption of global supply chains all contributing.
The organisations also point to a sea change in the public conversation around menopause. Increased awareness of the menopause and HRT has been called the Davina effect after a Channel 4 documentary presented by Davina McCall in May 2021.
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) says demand for HRT has risen 38% in the past seven years, as access has been extended.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG0P77 - The UK cost of living crisis is a period starting in 2021 in which prices for essential goods in the United Kingdom began increasing faster than household income, resulting in a fall in real income. This is caused in part by a rise in inflation in the UK. While all in the UK are affected by rising prices, the impact has been felt most by those with low income. The UK government has responded in various ways, such as by making provision for a £650 grant for each of the UK's lower income households.
Both global and local factors have contributed to the UK's cost of living crisis. According to Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey, about 80% of the causes driving the cost of living crisis are global. These include the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, an ongoing chip shortage, an energy crisis in 20212022, a supply chain crisis in 20212022 and Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The UK was reported to be among the worst affected among the world's advanced economies. In 2021, the UK's inflation was less than that of the US, but high US inflation was not generally experienced as a cost of living crisis due to the stimulus cheques that had been distributed to American households. Though in 2022 the cost of living crisis was also reported as being a global phenomenon, having impacts that include those living in the US, across Europe, and as risking an apocalyptic impact for those in the developing world.
Causes unique to the UK include labour shortages related to foreign workers leaving due to Brexit, and additional taxes on households. Factors that have worsened the crisis since 1 April 2022 include Ofgem increasing the household energy price cap by 54%, an increase in National Insurance, and a rise in Council Tax. Household income, whether from wages or benefits, has not generally kept pace with rising prices. In April 2022, UK real wages fell by 4.5%, the sharpest fall since records began back in 2001

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG21XA - The UK cost of living crisis is a period starting in 2021 in which prices for essential goods in the United Kingdom began increasing faster than household income, resulting in a fall in real income.
It is designed particularly to meet the requirements of blasting in gassy underground coal mines. The Mk 7 has an integral digital ohmmeter which can be used to measure the total circuit series resistance. The d.c voltage required to initiate the detonators is supplied by a hand operated generator which charges a capacitor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JAGDAH - Mine rescue or mines rescue is the specialised job of rescuing miners and others who have become trapped or injured in underground mines because of mining accidents, roof falls or floods and disasters such as explosions.
Altofts Colliery manager, W.E. Garforth suggested using a gallery to test rescue apparatus and train rescuers in 1899 and one was built at his pit in Altofts West Yorkshire. It cost £13,000. He also suggested the idea of a network of rescue stations. The first British mines rescue station opened at Tankersley in 1902. It was commissioned by the West Yorkshire Coal Mine Owners Association.[8] Its building is grade II listed.
In the United Kingdom a series of disasters in the 19th century brought about Royal Commissions which developed the idea of improving mine safety. The commissions influenced the Coal Mines Act of 1911 which made the provision of rescue stations compulsory. By 1919 there were 43 stations in the UK but as the coal industry declined from the last quarter of the 20th century many were closed, leaving six as of 2013, at Crossgates in Fife, Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear, Kellingley at Beal in North Yorkshire, Rawdon in Derbyshire, Dinas at Tonypandy in Glamorgan and at Mansfield Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire. The MRS Training centre at Houghton-le-Spring opened in 1913 is one of the six surviving British rescue stations which are operated by MRS Training and Rescue. It is a Grade II listed building.
Mines rescue featured in the 1952 film The Brave Don't Cry which was a testimony to the Knockshinnoch disaster. Mine rescuers have often been recognised in Britain by the award of gallantry medals.
In Britain, mines rescue teams may be called to investigate holes in the ground that have appeared because of land surface subsidence into old mineshafts and mine workings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JAXT5M - Black and white documentary photograph showing numerous coal miners' cap lamps, battery packs and work belts hanging from a large charging rack in the lamp room of a South Wales pit colliery. The tightly packed rows of metal lamp housings, electrical cables, leather straps and battery units create a repetitive industrial pattern associated with the daily routines of underground coal mining.
A colliery lamp room was an essential safety and operational area where miners collected, returned, inspected and recharged their personal lighting equipment before and after each shift. Electric cap lamps were normally secured to a miner's helmet while a rechargeable battery pack was carried on the belt, connected by a cable. Reliable illumination was vital in underground workings where miners otherwise faced complete darkness, restricted visibility and significant hazards from machinery, uneven ground and the coal face itself.
The crowded rack suggests the scale of the workforce once employed at major pits across the South Wales coalfield. Each lamp and battery would be issued, tracked and maintained so that equipment remained available and serviceable for the next shift. The image records the practical organisation behind coal production as well as the personal equipment used by generations of miners.
The monochrome treatment emphasises the metallic surfaces, worn belts, charging leads and dense arrangement of equipment. It gives the scene a strong archival character suitable for editorial subjects involving Welsh industrial heritage, coalfield communities, underground working conditions, mining safety, labour history, energy production and the decline of the British coal industry. The photograph also illustrates how surviving colliery equipment, lamp rooms and mining artefacts preserve the social and technological history of South Wales communities whose identities and economies were shaped by coal extraction.

The 2014 Celfwaith commission to create a climbing wall was part of a major refurbishment scheme on Barry Island, including structural works to the Eastern end of the Promenade
Early in 2014 Celfwaith appointed Becky Adams to collaborate on consultation meetings and workshops with youth groups at Area 41 and Barry Island, pupils at Barry Island Primary School, and the Barry Island Historical Society.
Gordon Young was appointed to create the climbing wall and had previous experience of creating climbing and bouldering structures in Blackpool. However, his proposal for Barry Island was completely different and captured the fun, colourful and tongue-in-cheek character of the place popularised by Gavin & Stacey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DTMKPY - Brains (S. A. Brain & Company Ltd.) is a regional brewery based in Cardiff, Wales. It was founded in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain.[1] At its peak, the company controlled more than 250 pubs in South Wales (particularly in Cardiff), Mid Wales and the West Country but the brewer sold most of its pub estate in 2022.[2] The company took over Crown Buckley Brewery in Llanelli in 1997 and Hancock's Brewery in 1999. In 2000, Brains moved to the former Hancock's Brewery just south of Cardiff Central railway station. The Old Brewery, in Cardiff city centre, has been developed into a modern bar and restaurant complex.
The company produces a range of beers under the Brains, Buckley's and Hancock's names. As part of their marketing strategy, Brains use shirt sponsorship for the Wales national rugby union team and the Crusaders Rugby League team

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H4K - Conwy Castle (Welsh: Castell Conwy) is a fortification in Conwy, located in North Wales. It was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around £15,000, a huge sum for the period. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 129495, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr in 1401.
Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies. In the aftermath, the castle was partially slighted by Parliament to prevent it being used in any further revolt, and was finally completely ruined in 1665 when its remaining iron and lead was stripped and sold off. Conwy Castle became an attractive destination for painters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitor numbers grew and initial restoration work was carried out in the second half of the 19th century. In the 21st century, the ruined castle is managed by Cadw as a UNESCO world heritage site tourist attraction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H50 - Lobster trap or lobster pot is a portable trap that traps lobsters or crayfish and is used in lobster fishing. In Scotland (chiefly in the north), the word creel is used to refer to a device used to catch lobsters and other crustaceans. A lobster trap can hold several lobsters. Lobster traps can be constructed of wire and wood, or metal and netting or rigid plastic. An opening permits the lobster to enter a tunnel of netting or other one-way device. Pots are sometimes constructed in two parts, called the chamber or kitchen, where there is bait, and exits into the parlour, which prevents escape. Lobster pots are usually dropped to the sea floor, one or more at a time, sometimes up to 40 or more, and are marked by a buoy so they can be picked up later.
The lobster trap was invented in 1808 by Ebenezer Thorndike of Swampscott, Massachusetts
Crayfish is a Freshwater (related) lobster
The Lobster Liberation Front (LLF) is an animal rights campaign which first appeared on the coast of Dorset, England in 2004, later spreading to Wales and Scotland. Their methods include releasing lobsters in live storage and sabotaging lobster pots or fishing boats.
The LLF consider boiling lobsters alive (the traditional method for cooking them) unacceptable and use direct action to prevent it. Their claim that lobsters, which possess a rudimentary nervous system, can feel pain, is the subject of ongoing scientific debate

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H58 - The Smallest House in Great Britain (Welsh: Y Tŷ Lleiaf ym Mhrydain Fawr), also known as the Quay House, is a tourist attraction on the quay in Conwy, Wales. It is reputed to be smallest house in the United Kingdom.
The minuscule home was created in the 16th century and remained in use until 1900, when the tenant was a 6-foot-3-inch (1.91 m) fisherman named Robert Jones. The rooms were too small for him to stand up in fully and he was eventually forced to move out when the council declared the house unfit for human habitation, along with a number of properties. The house is still owned by his descendants, having been passed to female relatives since Robert's sons showed a lack of interest in the business.
After some persuasion by the then editor of the North Wales Weekly News, Roger Dawson (the owner) and the editor toured the United Kingdom in order to declare the house The Smallest House in Great Britain, a status that was later confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records.
The house has a floor area of 3.05 by 1.8 metres (10.0 by 5.9 ft) and is painted red. It stands near the Conwy Castle walls. The ground floor is devoted to the living area with room for coal and an open fire, and a water tap tucked behind the stairs. The upstairs holds the cramped bedroom, which also comes with a small niche for storage.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4544077808 - 'Arthur's sword in Welsh legend is known as Caledfwlch. Its used by Arthur's warrior Llenlleawg the Irishman to kill the Irish king Diwrnach while stealing his magical cauldron. In Cornish the word Calesvol is used in literature to describe it and appears to have either come from the Welsh name or be an early pre-celtic word for it. At any rate the legend in various forms can be found in many northern european cultures.
Excalibur is by no means the only weapon associated with Arthur, nor the only sword, but the one that gets all the publicity.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson described it in 'The Passing of Arthur' ('Morte d'Arthur') in these words:
There drew he forth the brand Excalibur,
And o\u2019er him, drawing it, the winter moon,
Brightening the skirts of a long cloud, ran forth
And sparkled keen with frost against the hilt:
For all the haft twinkled with diamond sparks,
Myriads of topaz-lights, and jacinth-work
Of subtlest jewellery.
The Lady of the Lake is the name of several related characters in the different legends and interpretations. The Scotsman Walter Scott transported the legend to Loch Katrine, near Callander in central Scotland. In more recent times she appears as a character in the Spamalot musical and on Richie Blackmore's Rainbow 'Long Live Rock and Roll' album from the late 1970's.
With a delicate move kind of shifty and smooth
A shadow has covered the light
Then a beam in the shade from a slivery blade
Has shattered the edge of the night
Ahhh... takes me back to my mis-spent youth!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMWKF - The Millennium Stadium (Welsh: Stadiwm y Mileniwm) is the national stadium of Wales, located in the capital, Cardiff. It is the home of the Wales national rugby union team and also frequently stages games of the Wales national football team, but is also host to many other large scale events, such as the Super Special Stage of Wales Rally Great Britain, Speedway Grand Prix of Great Britain, boxing and many music concerts, including Tina Turner, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, U2, Stereophonics, Paul McCartney, and the Tsunami Relief concert. It was built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
The Millennium Stadium is owned by Millennium Stadium plc which is a subsidiary company of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). The stadium was designed by a team led by architects Bligh Lobb Sports Architecture, who merged to become HOK Sport Venue Event, which would be renamed Populous in early 2009. WS Atkins were the structural engineers, and the building contractor was Laing. The total construction cost of the stadium was £121 million, of which the Millennium Commission funded £46 million.
The stadium opened in June 1999, and the first major event to be held was an international rugby union match on 26 June 1999, when Wales beat South Africa in a friendly by 2919, before a test crowd of 29,000. With total seating capacity of 74,500, it is the third largest stadium in the Six Nations Championship behind the Stade de France and Twickenham, which is the largest. It is also the second largest stadium in the world with a fully retractable roof and was the second stadium in Europe to have this feature

The barometer and tower of The Fighting Cocks pub is shown with the interior and that of the Prince of Wales a little down Alcester Road towards Birmingham. At the latter you get a deer on the wall and a wide selection of real ales, that makes it my favourite choice.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'Red Frame/White Light' is the second single of the synthpop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The song quite boringly is about the red telephone box in Meols that was used by the band to make calls to organise their gigs.
The telephone box that inspired 'Red Frame/White Light' is located at the crossing of Birkenhead Road and Greenwood Road countryCode=GB#map=53.4011,-3.15818|17|4&
bd=useful_information&
loc=GB:53.4011:-3.15818:17|4 Greenwood Road, meols|4 Greenwood Road, Meols, Wirral, Merseyside, England, CH47 6\' rel=\'nofollow\'>in Meols. In the nearby pub 'The Railway Inn' the band would meet and used the telephone box to organise their gigs and transportation.
In the songs lyrics the phone number is mentioned: 6323003. Fans would ring the number expecting to get one of the band members, but got a confused home owner in their own area code. Over the years it has become a kind of sacred place for OMD fans. In 2004 OMD fan Stephen Cork started a successful campaign to get the telephone box repainted in time for a fan tour on April 10, 2005.

Penrhyn Castle is a country house in Llandegai, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales, in the form of a Norman castle. It was originally a medieval fortified manor house, founded by Ednyfed Fychan. In 1438, Ioan ap Gruffudd was granted a licence to crenellate and he founded the stone castle and added a tower house. Samuel Wyatt reconstructed the property in the 1780s.
The present building was created between 1820 and 1845 to designs by Thomas Hopper, who expanded and transformed the building beyond recognition. However a spiral staircase from the original property can still be seen, and a vaulted basement and other masonry were incorporated into the new structure. Hopper's clients were the Dawkins-Pennant family, who had made their fortune from Jamaican sugar and local slate quarries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMNR5 - A nostalgic collection of British chocolate bars and confectionery from the 1970s, displayed together to illustrate changing consumer tastes, packaging design and branding over the decades. The selection includes well-known favourites such as Bounty, Cadbury Whole Nut and Nestlé Milkybar, which remain familiar to shoppers today, alongside discontinued products including Golden Cup, Bar Six and Double Agents. Also featured are promotional and character-themed confectionery such as Doctor Who and Pink Panther chocolate, reflecting the growing influence of television, comics and popular culture on food marketing during the decade. The brightly coloured wrappers and distinctive typography capture the visual style of 1970s British retailing, when many chocolate bars cost only a few pence and were commonly sold through newsagents, supermarkets and school tuck shops. Images such as this are valuable for illustrating consumer history, branding evolution, food packaging, advertising, nostalgia, collecting, social history and the changing landscape of the UK confectionery industry. Some of the featured products have disappeared completely, while others continue to be produced in updated packaging, making the collection an interesting comparison between past and present British chocolate brands. The image is suitable for editorial use covering food history, retail heritage, vintage consumer products, childhood memories and the enduring popularity of classic confectionery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFER1P - Vintage dance and concert poster from Abergavenny Town Hall Ballroom in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales, advertising a run of events in May and June 1963. The brightly coloured printed bill uses bold red lettering on a yellow ground with green decorative border detail and promotes the venue as The Ballroom of the Stars . Presented by Eddie Tattersall, the poster lists several dates and performers, including the 8th May A Girl of the Month Dance featuring Vince White and the Hunters from Newport, the 15th June Music for Dancing and Romancing with The Hurricanes from Newport, the 22nd June appearance by The Beatles with The Fabulous Fortunes, and the 29th June event Keep Alive with Rock, Twist and Jive featuring Ricky Ford and the Crossfires.
The design is a strong example of early 1960s provincial music promotion, when town halls and ballrooms across Britain and Wales played an important role in live entertainment, youth culture and social dancing. Its mixture of large headline typography, admission details, late transport information and multiple artist bills reflects the practical style of the period, when posters had to grab attention quickly from passing audiences. The central Beatles billing is especially notable, placing the poster within the rapid rise of the group during 1963, while still showing them in the context of a mixed live dance programme rather than a later arena-scale event.
The image has clear value for editorial and historical use covering British pop history, Welsh cultural heritage, live music venues, dance-hall culture, concert memorabilia and printed ephemera. It documents not only an appearance by The Beatles in Abergavenny but also the wider entertainment scene of the time, when local promoters, support acts and regional audiences were central to the spread of beat music and popular dance culture in the UK. The poster survives as an evocative paper artefact of a specific place, date and social atmosphere.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGJWX7 - The British Rail Class 231 is a class of eleven diesel-electric multiple units of the FLIRT family, which have been built for Transport for Wales by Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler Rail. The first units entered service on 18 January 2023
The previous Wales & Borders rail franchise operator, KeolisAmey Wales ordered the new trains. Although KeolisAmey was removed as the franchise operator and replaced by an operator of last resort Transport for Wales Rail, owned by the Welsh Government, the scheduled full fleet replacement continued.
The units began testing in Switzerland in July 2021 and in November 2021 the first two units were delivered to Cardiff Canton depot
The Class 231 units are currently operating services on the Rhymney Line, though it is expected they will operate services between Maesteg and Cheltenham Spa, and between Cardiff Central and Ebbw Vale Town.
Class 231 units have four passenger vehicles, along with a separate Power Pack vehicle at the centre of the unit that contains four diesel generator sets. The diesel generators comply with EU Stage V emissions regulations. All vehicles are linked by unpowered Jacobs bogies, while the outermost bogie at each end of each unit carries the traction motors

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG21X7 - The UK cost of living crisis is a period starting in 2021 in which prices for essential goods in the United Kingdom began increasing faster than household income, resulting in a fall in real income.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD4W - A traditional British electric milkfloat vehicle
Milk deliveries frequently occur in the morning and it is not uncommon for milkmen to deliver products other than milk such as eggs, cream, cheese, butter, yogurt or soft drinks. Originally, milk needed to be delivered to houses daily since the lack of good refrigeration meant it would quickly spoil. The near-ubiquity of refrigerators in homes in the developed world, as well as improved packaging, has decreased the need for frequent milk delivery over the past half-century and made the trade shrink in many localities sometimes to just 3 days a week and disappear totally in others. Additionally, milk delivery incurs a small cost on the price of dairy products that is increasingly difficult to justify and leaves delivered milk in a position where it is vulnerable to theft.
Because of the relatively small power output from its electric motor, a milk float travels fairly slowly, usually around 10 to 16 miles per hour (16 to 26 km/h) although some have been modified to do up to 80 mph (130 km/h). Operators often exit their vehicle before they have completely stopped to speed up deliveries
milk floats generally have sliding doors that can be left open when moving, or may have no doors at all. They are very quiet, suiting operations in residential areas during the early hours of the morning or during the night.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DN6MPR - Photo shows Typical 1930s English brick built semi-detached house with triangles over bedrooms, front garden shared chimney Warrington UK. The image is useful for lifestyle, housing, domestic life, gardens, weather, landscape, property, heritage interiors and everyday British place imagery. These subjects can illustrate how people live with buildings, seasons, homes, public spaces and rural or suburban surroundings. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Warrington, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Season, sky and weather should be read from the photograph where visible
the caption suggests an everyday real location rather than a staged scene. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
