The recordings played on such a device consist of waveforms that are engraved onto a rotating cylinder or disc. As the cylinder or disc rotates, a stylus or needle traces the waveforms and vibrates to reproduce the recorded sound waves.
The phonograph was invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. While other inventors had produced devices that could record sounds, Edison's phonograph was the first to be able to reproduce the recorded sound. His phonograph originally recorded sound onto a tinfoil sheet phonograph cylinder, and could both record and reproduce sounds.
Alexander Graham Bell's Volta Laboratory made several improvements in the 1880s, including the use of wax-coated cardboard cylinders, and a cutting stylus that moved from side to side in a zig zag pattern across the record. At the turn of the 20th century, Emile Berliner initiated the transition from phonograph cylinders to gramophone records: flat, double-sided discs with a spiral groove running from the periphery to near the center.
Other improvements were made throughout the years, including modifications to the turntable and its drive system, the needle and stylus, and the sound and equalization systems.
The gramophone record was one of the dominant audio recording formats throughout much of the 20th century. From the mid-1980s, phonograph use declined sharply because of the rise of the Compact Disc and other digital recording formats. While no longer mass market items, modest numbers of phonographs and phonograph records continue to be produced in the second decade of the 21st century.

This type of mechanical gramophone required no mains electricity. The user wound an internal spring motor using the external handle, placed the needle into the groove and allowed the rotating disc to transmit vibrations through the soundbox. These were acoustically amplified through an internal horn or sound chamber contained inside the portable case. The compact construction made suitcase gramophones suitable for moving between rooms, taking on holidays, using outdoors or providing entertainment at social gatherings.
The disc shown is described as a 78 rpm record. Historic records made for machines of this kind were generally manufactured from a comparatively brittle shellac-based compound rather than the flexible vinyl material associated with later long-playing records. The term vinyl is nevertheless often used informally for older circular records, although shellac record is the more historically accurate description.
Portable gramophones became familiar household entertainment devices during the first half of the twentieth century, before electrically amplified radiograms, record players and modern audio systems became widespread. They allowed recorded songs, orchestral performances, dance music, comedy and spoken-word material to be enjoyed away from concert halls and theatres.

The Scandalli Brothers was born in Camerano in 1916 , when Silvio Scandalli ( 1889 -1977) with his brothers Henry and Albino, began making accordions in a small home workshop, and then sell them in nearby Loreto , place of pilgrimage for many believers. It was in 1923 one of the first sales contracts with which the Scandalli brothers undertook to build 25 barrel organs per year for the Belgian Giuseppe Fieres of Mont-Saint-Amand-lez-Gan . In 1930 the Scandalli Brothersit had grown to open a new factory which had a hundred workers and a production of 10 accordions daily [1] .

In those years when the mechanics of the instrument was in continuous development and renewal, the company's research activity was very important, testified by the numerous projects presented at the Patent Office in Milan : the first, from 1924 , bore the title of Improvement in mechanical key devices to combine several voices in accord in bellows accordions , while in 1932 a system was invented that allowed to dismantle the part of the mechanical control organs of both the bass and the chords [1] . In the following years, then, Silvio Scandalli decided to include a small research and patent department in the company.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBAD - An engine order telegraph or E.O.T., often also called a Chadburn, is a communications device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 1800s until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to ring the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a bell, for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a flank bell.
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a cavitate bell because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Such noise is undesirable during conflicts because it can give away a vessel's position.
On most modern vessels the EOT acts as a direct throttle with no intervening engine room personnel.

An artwork dedicated to one of Macclesfield's finest musicians has pride of place in the town centre. The mural of Ian Curtis, the iconic former frontman of Joy Division, is a fully funded Cheshire East Council project and has been painted by well-known street artist Akse'. It adorns a building on Mill Street, just across from the bus station.

Ian was brought up in Macclesfield, won a scholarship to King's School in the town and his ashes are buried in Macclesfield Cemetery. He took his own life in 1980.
The commissioning of the mural follows on from Cheshire East Council's approval of the Macclesfield town centre strategic regeneration framework, which the council is continuing to deliver against.
The framework sets out the council's vision for the town centre as a place which celebrates its quirkiness and provides the development sector with the confidence and certainty needed to bring forward investment, jobs and economic growth.
