Expanding into plastic production for its own use, Ekco Plastics produced both radio cases and later domestic plastic products
the plastics company became Lin Pac Mouldings Ltd.
The company's founder Eric Kirkham Cole was born on 4 July 1901 at Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and was educated at Southend Day Technical School, followed by a three-year apprenticeship. Cole and his future wife Muriel Bradshaw started out making radio sets in 1924.
William Streatfield Verrells, a schoolmaster and freelance journalist from Southend-on-Sea, wrote an article in a local newspaper asking if it was possible to power a radio set from the mains electricity supply rather than batteries. Cole saw a possible business opportunity
In the late 1930s, Ekco began producing its own radio valves at its Southend-on-Sea works. Following the company's decision to abandon the venture, the plant was converted to a lamp factory. In 1943, Ekco acquired Ensign Lamps based in Preston. In 1950, Ekco sold 51% of its lighting subsidiary, Ekco-Ensign Electric Ltd, to Thorn Electrical Industries.

There are 558 stairs up to the top, and two lift shafts with lifts reaching the top in 30 seconds.
The tower is structurally independent of the adjacent shopping centre, with a simple foundation onto sandstone. Originally it was built as a chimney of the heating system of the shopping centre [1].The foundation is 60 feet in diameter, 17 feet deep and begins 40 feet below Houghton Street. It has a tapering shaft that was built using slip-formed concrete. The crows nest structure at the top was then added after the shaft was formed.
The original restaurant closed in 1979 for health and safety issues. It was re-opened, with a reduced capacity and additional fire prevention measures, during the early 1980s. The restaurant was eventually re-fitted as a Buck Rogers space-themed restaurant in 1983, but closed again due to lack of business. After this the observation deck and the restaurant remained closed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKRA - The Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.

It contains mostly bars and clubs, including a Hard Rock Cafe as well as a leisure centre and a 23-screen Odeon cinema, (formerly the Filmworks), incorporating an IMAX 3D screen. The Printworks was also home to the Hard Rock Casino in Manchester until it closed in 2006.
Until 1986 the Printworks was home to a printing press, owned at the time of its demise by Robert Maxwell. The site stood derelict until 1998, when work commenced on the new venue.

/ˈdʒɒdrəl/) is a British observatory that hosts a number of radio telescopes, and is part of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. The observatory was established in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester who wanted to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The managing director of the observatory is Professor Simon Garrington.
The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. There are three other active telescopes located at the observatory
the Mark II, as well as 42 ft (13 m) and 7 m diameter radio telescopes. Jodrell Bank Observatory is also the base of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), a National Facility run by the University of Manchester on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
The site of the observatory, which includes the Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre and an arboretum, is located in the civil parish of Lower Withington (the rest being in Goostrey civil parish), near Goostrey and Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, North West England. It is reached from the A535. An excellent view of the telescope can be seen by travelling by train, as the main line between Manchester and Crewe passes right by the site, with Goostrey station being only a short distance away.

The Ferguson 401 is more accurately described by several specialist and auction references as a mid-1950s radio gramophone rather than a 1960 model, although similar radiogram furniture remained part of British living-room culture into the early 1960s. Radiomuseum records the Ferguson 401RG as a console radiogram originally fitted with a Garrard RC 80M record changer, a 12-inch bass speaker, 6 x 4-inch treble speaker and EL84 output valves. Auction listings have described a Ferguson model 401 radio gramophone as circa 1955, with a walnut case and cream and brown Bakelite fittings.
Radiograms were once aspirational household objects, combining radio receiver, amplifier, loudspeaker and gramophone in one substantial item of furniture. Before compact stereos, cassette decks, CDs, streaming and Bluetooth speakers, a cabinet like this could be the centre of the room, used for BBC radio, light music, dance bands, classical records and later LP albums. It also evokes the move from shellac 78s towards microgroove vinyl, when long-playing records changed listening habits. The warm timber, analogue dial and visible vinyl disc make the photograph useful for stories about nostalgia, interiors, audio collecting, repair culture, analogue sound, 1950s design, British consumer electronics and surviving domestic technology.
