Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F1P3TT - Passengers gather beneath a large purple Welcome to Oxford Road sign inside Manchester Oxford Road railway station, a busy city-centre transport gateway. People cross the concourse or sit beneath the distinctive timber roof, while Northern and Bee Network branding reflects the station's place within Greater Manchester's public transport system. The scene conveys its everyday importance and infrastructure pressure.
Oxford Road serves universities, hospitals, cultural venues and offices along the Oxford Road Corridor. It also occupies a critical position between Deansgate and Manchester Piccadilly on the Castlefield Corridor, an intensively used section of railway identified as congested infrastructure. Disruption can spread beyond central Manchester because local, regional and inter-city services share limited tracks and platforms.
Network Rail proposals would remodel Oxford Road by replacing five short platforms with three longer ones, improving accessibility and allowing longer trains. The scheme aims to increase capacity and reliability, but major intervention has been discussed for years while funding remains difficult. Earlier Northern Hub plans included additional through platforms at Piccadilly, but these did not progress, reinforcing arguments that Manchester's growth has outpaced investment in its central railway.
The image illustrates a wider transport debate. Supporters argue that incremental alterations may not provide sufficient long-term capacity and that Manchester should examine an underground or tunnelled route through Piccadilly. Advocates say this could separate services, release surface land and support growth, although an underground solution remains a proposal requiring further testing rather than an approved project. The busy concourse and welcome banner capture the contrast between Manchester's confident civic identity and a constrained rail corridor awaiting a durable answer to congestion, accessibility and reliability

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH06TD - The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin (grid reference SD656003) is a Church of England parish church in Leigh, Greater Manchester, England. It is a member of the Salford & Leigh deanery in the archdeaconry of Salford, diocese of Manchester. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
Leigh was in the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry until 1541 when it was transferred to the Diocese of Chester. In 1847 Leigh became the only parish in the Hundred of West Derby to be part of the new Diocese of Manchester. Leigh has had its own deanery since 1933. Before that it was part of the deanery of Eccles and prior to that Warrington.
History
St. Mary's is in the centre of Leigh by the Civic Square, which was originally the market place, next to the library and opposite the town hall. The church was mentioned in documents in the 13th century but the date of its foundation is uncertain. The first church on the site, dedicated to St Peter, was described as the Church of Westleigh in Leigh. Its dedication was changed to St Mary the Virgin at the end of the 14th century. The church straddled the ancient boundary between the townships of Westleigh and Pennington, the nave and churchyard in Westleigh and the chancel in Pennington

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH070G - The Lilford Hotel in Bradshawgate was built in 1876 at a cost of 3,000 pounds. The Lilford Hotel originally included four cellars, nine ground floor rooms, 12 bedrooms, stabling and a coach house and could cater for 70 diners but only offered four beds and stabled six horses in 1890. Bed spaces were limited by the large billiards and reception rooms. It was also a popular venue with cyclists in Leigh including the Buffaloes cycling club. The original landlord was ejected in 1877 for licensing irregularities and paying 120 pounds rent per annum - five times the normal rents in those days, then in 1880 Joseph Jackson was landlord and in 1895 he built a brewery to the rear.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AEDHXN - Hit the North is a 1987 song by British post-punk band the Fall. The lyrics were composed by band leader Mark E. Smith with the music written by Simon Rogers and Brix Smith. It was released as a single in October 1987 and reached number 57 on the UK singles chart. According to Tom Doyle of Sound on Sound, the song is a rousing groove“based anthem which is now regarded by many as both their ultimate statement and best single.
The record was part of a conscious approach by Brix Smith and Simon Rogers, both of whom had recently joined the band, in increasing the Fall's popularity and accessibility. Brix Smith said: It was definitely a conscious thing on my part because they were so, so underground and so unappreciated and unknown. I just thought they were such an important band and it needed to be broadcast all over the world. Her husband at the time, Mark E. Smith, disagreed: ..it wasn't a conscious effort. It was just trying to get it a bit more punchy. I always like it very clean and simple. A lot of groups are swamped with sound.
The music was written by Rogers and Brix Smith, and recorded by Rogers on his newly-acquired Sequential Circuits Studio 440 sequencer-sampler. Rogers said literally the first thing I put into it was a bass and a snare just on two pads, a little tiny Indian bell... and a sax note and a bass note from a Gentle Giant record. When Rogers demonstrated the instrument to Mark E. Smith, Smith said: What's that music? I'll have that, just do me a tape. Smith recorded a demo, with the original programmed drums removed
on the final recording they are replaced by samples of Simon Wolstencroft's drumming. The song was recorded in Abbey Road Studios in July 1987, during the sessions for the band's album The Frenz Experiment, with Rogers as producer and Ian Grimble as recording engineer. Guitar and vocal distortions and other effects were added in the studio.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED8PR4 - Carlisle railway station, also known as Carlisle Citadel station, is a railway station which serves the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England, and is a major station on the West Coast Main Line, lying 102 miles (164 km) south of Glasgow Central, and 299 miles (481 km) north of London Euston.
It is also the northern terminus of the celebrated Settle and Carlisle Line “ notionally (and historically) a continuation of the Midland Main Line from Leeds, Sheffield and ultimately London St Pancras. It is a Grade II* listed building
The station was built in 1847, in a neo-Tudor style to the designs of William Tite.[2] It was then one of a number of stations in the city - the others were at Crown Street (Maryport & Carlisle Railway) and London Road (Newcastle and Carlisle Railway) - but had become the main one by 1851
it was expanded and extended in 1875-1876, with the arrival of the Midland Railway (who became the seventh different company to serve it).
The Beeching Axe fell with very significant rail closures including the former North British Railway lines to Silloth (closed on 7 September 1964) and Edinburgh via Galashiels (the Waverley Line, closed on 6 January 1969). The axe cut off the Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway and Portpatrick Railway in 1965 resulting in an adverse mileage increase via the Glasgow South Western Line to reach Stranraer Harbour and thus Northern Ireland.
The layout has also undergone few changes of any significance other than the singling of the ex-NER Tyne Valley route down to London Road Junction as part of the 1972-3 re-signalling scheme associated with WCML electrification.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBPF0 - Northern Quarter Graffiti,Church St, Manchester, Lancashire, England, UK, M1 is a useful documentary subject because it fixes a recognisable place, object or activity in its real setting rather than presenting it as a staged illustration. Manchester's Northern Quarter uses murals, graffiti, shutters and old warehouse streets as part of its creative identity, turning former industrial fabric into a backdrop for bars, studios and independent shops. Street art here can illustrate regeneration, gentrification, local authorship, cultural tourism, public art, music heritage and the way cities use rough edges as part of their brand. The location detail, Manchester, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include church architecture, religious building, parish church, community landmark, cash economy, sterling currency, banknotes and coins, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. It would suit newspaper, magazine, web, council, transport, heritage, housing, retail, travel or social-commentary use where a believable, unpolished view of real life is more valuable than a generic illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H3TNWN - Photo shows City Centre Manchester embossed cast iron Grid, Right at the heart of things, England UK. The image is suited to editorial use around street art, visual culture, murals, poster design, neon, typography, nightlife, creative quarters and the way cities express identity through walls, signs and public surfaces. Such photographs can also support features on tourism, regeneration, counterculture, community memory and changing urban neighbourhoods. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Manchester, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. The visible artwork, typography or sign is the core evidence, with location and public realm context adding value. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
