Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMNXF - Newton, sometimes known as Newton after Blake, is a 1995 work by the sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi. The large bronze sculpture is displayed on a high plinth in the piazza outside the British Library in London.
The sculpture is based on William Blake's 1795 print of Newton: Personification of Man Limited by Reason, which depicts a naked Isaac Newton sitting on ledge beside a mossy rock face while measuring with a pair of compasses or dividers. The print was intended by Blake to criticise Newton's profane knowledge, usurping the sacred knowledge and power of the creator Urizen, with the scientist turning away from nature to focus on his books.
Paolozzi had admired Blake since viewing a large print of Newton at the Tate Gallery in the 1940s. He was also a friend of Colin St John Wilson, the architect of the British Library, since they both participated in the This is Tomorrow exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1956. Wilson intended to site a seated sculpture at the junction of the two main axes in the piazza of his library. Paolozzi was then working on a sculpture of Newton, and he was commissioned to create the sculpture for the library. The new library was constructed from 1982 to 1999, and the sculpture was installed in 1995.
The sculpture includes Paolozzi's self-portrait as the naked Newton, measuring the universe with his dividers. The eyes were copied from Michelangelo's David. It can be interpreted as symbolising a confluence of the two cultures, the arts and the sciences, and illustrating how Newton changed our view of the world to one determined by mathematical laws. The sculpture makes the body resemble a mechanical object, joined with bolts at the shoulders, elbows, knees and ankles. The sculptures shows the visible seams of Paolozzi's technique of dividing his model and reassembling the pieces, for example on the head.
The final full-size sculpture stands 12 feet (3.7 m) high, and is mounted on a high plinth.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. An ipod track that I ripped from a red vinyl single from my loft. Japan came out of Catford, South London. They were often associated with the 'New Romantic' movement, but the band were far more sophisticated than this narrow definition.
Band members David Sylvian (Vox), Richard Barbieri (Keyboards), Mick Karn (Bass), Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen (percussion). Later Rob Dean joined playing guitar.
The band debuted on record with the 1978 album 'Adolescent Sex' from which this track was taken. It was followed up with 'Obscure Alternatives'. Both albums sold well in Japan (where the band's name helped them to gain a devoted cult following) and Holland, where the single 'Adolescent Sex' was a Top 30 hit. They also gained some popularity in Canada. Unfortunately in their native UK those albums were largely ignored.
Though influenced by artists such as the New York Dolls, Roxy Music and David Bowie, both albums were widely dismissed by the UK music press as being distinctly outmoded at a time when punk and New Wave bands were in ascendence. The band were managed by Simon Napier-Bell who has also managed The Yardbirds, Marc Bolan, London and Wham!. 1979's Quiet Life, heralded a significant change towards a more electronic sound. Their final two studio albums, Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980) and Tin Drum (1981), were released on the Virgin label, and continued to expand their audience as the band refined its new sound and, somewhat unintentionally, became associated with the early-1980s New Romantic movement. Tin Drum in particular is critically regarded as one of the most innovative albums of the 1980s, with its startlingly original fusion of occidental and oriental sounds, and peaked just outside the UK Top 10. Its unconventional single 'Ghosts' reached no 5 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Japan's biggest domestic hit.
Japan's last ever performance was on 16 December 1982 in Nagoya, Japan. The band's final Hammersmith concerts were recorded to produce Oil On Canvas, a live album and video released in June 1983. This is a good starting point if you woul dlike to get to know the band. Tell 'em I sent you!

Hayes was singer-songwriter, actor, and musician and one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records. There he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s.
In the late 1960s, Hayes became a recording artist, and recorded successful soul albums such as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). He was also the Stax label's premier artist. In addition to his work in pop music, Hayes was a film score composer for motion pictures. His best known work, for the 1971 soul cinema classic film Shaft, earned Hayes an Academy Award for Best Original Song (the first Academy Award received by an African-American in a non-acting category) and two Grammy Awards. He received a third Grammy for the album Black Moses.
Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul and funk musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, 'Freddie's Dead' and the title track. Pusherman is the third killer track on the disk. Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.
In 1997, Rhino Records released a 25th Anniversary collection of the Super Fly album with a bonus disc of demo versions of songs, radio spots and interviews.
Isaac Hayes died of a stroke in August 2008, aged nearly 66.
He will probably be best remembered when during the late 1990s, Hayes gained new popularity as the voice of Chef animated TV series South Park. Chef was a soul-singing cafeteria worker at the South Park kids' school. A song from the series performed by Chef, 'Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. He left the show however in a row about the South Park episode 'Trapped in the Closet'. This was a satire of Scientology which aired in Nov 2005. In a response the South Park authors stated

The South Park season 10 premiere (aired March 22, 2006) featured 'The Return of Chef', a thinly veiled telling of the affair from Parker and Stone's point of view. Using sound clips from past episodes, it depicts Chef as having been brainwashed and urges viewers (via Kyle talking to the town) to 'remember Chef as the jolly old guy who always broke into song' and not to blame Chef for his defection, but rather, as Kyle stated, 'be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains.'
During the spring of 2008 before his death, Hayes shot scenes for a comedy about soul musicians inspired by the history of Stax Records entitled Soul Men, in which he appears as himself in a supporting role. His voice can be heard in the film in a voice-over role as Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, and Sharon Leal's characters are traveling through Memphis.
Two months after his death, the South Park episode 'The China Probrem' was dedicated to him.

There are some cracking books on tattooing around. They are great for inspiration and like this chap, if I was having a large scale piece of work done it would be the ideal coffee table book to be browsing. Tat history is over 5000 year-old as proved by a tattooed mummy found in modern day Egypt. there are many fine books that document and illustrate it.
Here are some of my favourites that I have read, owned, enjoyed, had stolen or lost during the years.
The Sketchbook: 80 Unique Designs by the World's Finest Tattoo Artists.
A perfectly tattooed body requires the skills of a professional and talented artist, who creates a unique and personal design. These designs are often inspired by one or more of the various tattoo styles of Japanese, Maori or other tribal origin. this is a pretty academic book. The new tattoo community described here is demographically quite different from the old. It is more female, more middle-class, and more educated, whereas the earlier society of tattoo collectors was primarily working class and male. DeMello lays out some of the social history of tattooing to prepare for her discussion of the changes in tattooing in the past 20 years. From handpicked prison tattoos to the latest in today's 'tribal' design, from gang symbols to feminist ones, tattoos themselves have changed to meet changing demands and fashions.

An old shot, sadly the noise abatement society have led to the demise of CBGB's at 315 Bowery. I dont know who should be more ashamed. The club originally opened by Billy Kristal closed in October 2006. The final concert was performed quite appropriately by Patti Smith on 15/10/2006.
A lot of my favourite bands cut their teeth there and I remember having early cassette tape bootlegs from CBGB's. My faves were the Ramones, Tom Verlaine &
Television, Patti Smith Group, The Dead Boys (I came across Sonic Reducer on 12' last week- which prompted me to dig this out), Richard Hell &
The Voidoids, The Cramps, Blondie and those darlings Talking Heads.
