Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this capability was never used. In the event of nuclear war, it was intended for the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to take refuge aboard Britannia off the north-west coast of Scotland

At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

The National Trust has now removed a statue of a black male from the forecourt of Dunham Massey Hall.
The move comes after calls to remove it from its prominent position in front of the Cheshire stately home due to its association with colonialism and slavery.
The life-size statue depicts a black figure dressed in a skirt of feathers, kneeling on one knee holding a sundial above his head.
The Blackamoor sundial at Dunham Massey is currently under review for its connotations with slavery
It comes after the National Trust revealed they were reviewing what to do with the statue while working to tackle the often painful and challenging histories attached to our places and collections.
It says it is now making plans about how to address this history in a way that 'fully acknowledges the appalling histories of slavery and the slave trade'.
A spokesperson for the trust said We don't want to censor or deny the way colonial histories are woven into the fabric of our buildings.
For these reasons, we have decided to move it safely from its previous location while we make plans to address it in a way that fully acknowledges the appalling histories of slavery and the slave trade.

Rannoch Moor (Scottish Gaelic: M\u00f2inteach Raineach/Raithneach)is a large expanse of around 50 square miles (130 km\u00b2) of boggy moorland to the west of Loch Rannoch, in Perth and Kinross and Lochaber, Highland, partly northern Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Rannoch Moor is designated a National Heritage site.
It is notable for its wildlife, particularly famous for the sole British location for the Rannoch-rush, named after the moor. It was also frequently visited by Horace Donisthorpe, who collected many unusual species of ants on the moor and surrounding hilly ground. Today it is still one of the few remaining habitats for Formica exsecta, the 'narrow-headed ant', although recent surveys have failed to produce any sign of Formica pratensis, which Donisthorpe recorded in the area in the early part of the 20th century.
Peat deposits pose major difficulties to builders of roads and railways. When the West Highland Line was built across Rannoch Moor, its builders had to float the tracks on a mattress of tree roots, brushwood and thousands of tons of earth and ashes.
The very fast and furious A82 road crosses through Rannoch Moor on its way to Glen Coe and Fort William.
