Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEBD - Blue automated passport control eGates stand in a glass-walled Italian airport border control area for non-Schengen passengers, showing the increasingly digital nature of European travel, immigration and frontier management. The Reco 3.26 branded machines are used for automated border control and passenger flow management, with passport scanning, biometric identity checks and registration points linked to facial images and fingerprints. For travellers from outside the EU and Schengen area, including many UK passengers after Brexit, the first-use enrolment process can mean extra time at the border as a digital record is created and checked. The scene is commercially useful for illustrating airport queues, travel delays, biometric surveillance, immigration technology, border security, smart borders, post-Brexit travel, EU Entry/Exit System processes, passenger processing and the practical reality of automation in busy terminals. The equipment is clean, blue and modern, but the image also hints at the tension between faster digital journeys and the inconvenience caused when new systems require unfamiliar steps, staff guidance or repeated registration. Visible scanners, kiosks, barriers and eGate lanes create a documentary view of contemporary airport infrastructure rather than a staged technology display. The indoor lighting, polished floor and queue barriers suggest a controlled terminal environment, likely at arrivals or departures where non-Schengen travellers pass immigration checks. The photograph has strong editorial value for stories on EES implementation, biometric data privacy, passport control modernisation, identity verification, Schengen external borders, airport capacity, holiday travel disruption and the everyday use of computer vision in public-sector security. It can also support broader features on border automation, data protection, UK and EU travel rules, delayed passengers, airline pressure and changing international air travel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFHRJ2 - Elevated coastal view across the Port of Catania and the city of Catania in eastern Sicily, with snow-capped Mount Etna rising in the background and a small plume of volcanic smoke or gas visible from the summit area. The photograph combines deep blue Mediterranean water, harbour breakwaters, port infrastructure, dense urban development and the striking white volcanic cone of Etna, creating a strong editorial image of Sicily's relationship with an active volcano. Mount Etna is Europe's largest active volcano and dominates the landscape above Catania, making this view useful for travel, geography, geology, climate, natural hazards, tourism, shipping, urban planning and environmental stories. The scene shows the port as a working maritime gateway, with docks, piers, a breakwater, vessels and open sea in the foreground, while the city spreads across the lower slopes beneath the volcano. The snow on Etna contrasts with the clear blue sky and bright coastal light, suggesting a cool winter or early spring period when the summit is white but the coast remains sunlit. The small plume adds news and documentary value, linking the attractive Mediterranean panorama with the constant volcanic activity that affects local life, air travel, farming, tourism and risk management around Catania. The image is suitable for features on Sicily holidays, cruise and ferry routes, Catania harbour, volcanic landscapes, UNESCO-listed Etna, Italian islands, Mediterranean ports, earth science, ash clouds, volcanic monitoring, natural beauty and the coexistence of a major city with one of the world's most closely watched volcanoes. It also works well for contrasts between sea and mountain, industry and nature, urban settlement and geological force, with Etna forming a dramatic snow-covered backdrop to the harbour and city below. The clear weather and high viewpoint give the image broad stock value for guidebooks, education, climate resilience and Italian travel publishing.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFHRFY - Photograph showing vineyard rows in the Giardini Naxos area of Sicily, Italy, with cultivated vines across brown soil and a large white Mediterranean building rising behind red tiled roofs and trees under a clear blue sky. The supplied title identifies the scene as Nerello Mascalese vineyards, although individual grape varieties cannot be confirmed from the photograph alone without vineyard records or a close view of leaves and bunches. In this part of eastern Sicily, close to Mount Etna, Mascali and Taormina, Nerello Mascalese is one of the key native red grapes associated with Etna wine. It is best known for producing Etna Rosso, a pale to medium-bodied red wine prized for elegance, freshness, red cherry, wild strawberry, floral notes, spice, minerality and fine tannins. Etna Rosso may be made entirely from Nerello Mascalese, or blended with Nerello Cappuccio under Etna DOC tradition, and the wines often reflect volcanic soils, altitude, sea breezes and microclimates around Europe's most active volcano. Giardini Naxos, on the Ionian coast below Taormina, sits within a wider landscape of coastal agriculture, citrus, olives, vineyards, tourism and historic settlement. The image is useful for editorial and commercial searches around Sicilian wine, Etna DOC, Nerello Mascalese, Italian viticulture, vineyard tourism, Mediterranean agriculture, wine production, rural Sicily, wine holidays, food and drink, sustainable farming, volcanic terroir, Taormina excursions and the link between tourism and agriculture in eastern Sicily. The neat vine training, dry soil, bright summer light, palms, low vegetation and clear blue sky suggest a warm growing season landscape, possibly late spring or summer before harvest. Strong stock-photo concepts include Sicily vineyard, Giardini Naxos, Etna wine region, Nerello Mascalese grapes, Etna Rosso, Italian red wine, wine tourism, Mediterranean countryside, volcanic wine, rural economy, agriculture, travel and Sicilian identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFHRGD - Photograph showing an Enilive petrol station forecourt in Giardini Naxos, on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, with blue fuel pumps, an Iperself price sign, a white Dacia car, a black van and bright summer light beneath a modern canopy. The visible sign appears to show unleaded petrol, diesel and premium fuel prices above two euros for some products, making the image useful for editorial coverage of high fuel prices, motoring costs, tourism transport, household bills and the cost of living in Italy. The forecourt is on Viale Dionisio in the Recanati area of Giardini Naxos, a coastal resort close to Taormina and Mount Etna, where visitors often rely on hire cars, coaches, taxis and local buses to reach beaches, hotels, archaeological sites and excursions around eastern Sicily. Enilive is Eni's mobility company, covering fuel retailing, service stations, biomethane, biorefining, smart mobility and services for people on the move. The brand has been repositioned around mobility rather than simply petrol retailing, but this photograph captures the continuing everyday reality of fossil fuel prices on a local Italian filling station forecourt. Strong commercial and editorial themes include petrol prices, diesel prices, Italian fuel costs, Enilive, Eni, Iperself, self-service petrol, service station, forecourt, motoring, car travel, road transport, tourism economy, transport inflation, energy costs, fossil fuels, fuel retail, Sicily holiday driving, hire car costs, Giardini Naxos, Messina province, Sicilian infrastructure and Mediterranean travel. The clear sky, hard shadows and dry conditions suggest a warm spring or summer day, adding seasonal travel context. The image can illustrate articles about how fuel costs affect residents, tourists, small businesses, delivery operators, commuters and the wider visitor economy in Sicilian coastal towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJ11XW - View of the Fratelli Torrisi On The Road Café sign at the Esso service station on Viale Generale Cannada in Barrafranca, central Sicily, Italy. The rectangular wall-mounted panel uses bold black lettering, flowing red script and a stylised roadway graphic to advertise the café within the roadside fuel and service complex.
The words Fratelli Torrisi appear across the upper section, while On the Road is written prominently in red above the large word Café . The visual combination of highway imagery and informal script creates branding aimed at drivers, travellers and local customers stopping for fuel, food or refreshments. The sign is fixed to the brown exterior facade beside a glazed entrance, presenting a clean and highly visible identity for the hospitality outlet.
The wider Esso Amoil On The Road site operates as more than a conventional filling station. Published business information describes facilities including a bar, tobacco counter, hot food, breakfast, aperitifs, lottery products, bill payments, telephone top-ups and other everyday services. The location is also listed as a parcel collection and dispatch point, illustrating how modern Italian service stations can function as multipurpose retail and community facilities.
Barrafranca is a municipality in the inland Sicilian territory of Enna, where private cars and road transport remain important for connecting towns, villages and rural areas. Roadside businesses of this kind provide useful stopping points for residents, commercial drivers and visitors travelling through the island's interior. The photograph records Italian petrol-station culture, café branding, local enterprise, convenience retailing and the infrastructure supporting road travel in Sicily. It also provides a clear editorial image of the distinctive On The Road Café identity at this established Barrafranca service area

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJ11Y4 - Brightly coloured Gratta e Vinci instant scratch-card lottery display inside the Esso Amoil On The Road Café at Viale Generale Cannada 531 in Barrafranca, Sicily, Italy. The yellow and black branded stand carries the large wording Gratta e Vinci and Gratta Qui , inviting customers to scratch their tickets at the point of sale. A small shelf and disposal opening are built into the unit, while the front panel asks players who have not won to place their used ticket in the container and help protect the environment.
Behind the stand is a large lottery information board showing ticket ranges, prize structures and other gaming products available from the retailer. Additional displays and counter equipment indicate a multipurpose service-area business combining fuel, refreshments, tobacco sales, lottery products and convenience services. The setting illustrates how instant-win games are promoted in everyday Italian retail environments rather than only in dedicated betting shops or casinos.
Gratta e Vinci is one of Italy's most recognisable scratch-card brands, sold through authorised outlets including bars, tobacconists, cafés and petrol stations. Customers buy a printed ticket, remove the covering from designated play areas and immediately discover whether a prize has been won. The eye-catching yellow branding, oversized lettering and hand-shaped logo are designed for strong visibility beside the till and other impulse-purchase products.
Photographed in a roadside café in inland Sicily, the scene provides an editorial record of Italian lottery culture, legal gambling, consumer spending and point-of-sale marketing. It also reflects the role of petrol-station cafés as local service hubs for motorists and residents. Relevant themes include instant lotteries, scratch tickets, gambling accessibility, responsible play, small retail revenue, impulse buying, cash prizes and branded display furniture in a public-facing hospitality settin

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YB9N - This image shows Chi Chi + The Pasta Family operating a street food stall at Old Spitalfields Market in East London. The stall features bold branding and a fully open kitchen, allowing customers to watch pasta being prepared and cooked to order.
Chi Chi + The Pasta Family specialises in Italian street food, with a focus on fresh pasta dishes inspired by traditional Italian cooking and adapted for the fast-paced market environment. Clear menu boards, bright lighting, and staff in branded clothing create a strong visual identity and reinforce the stall's emphasis on quality, speed, and approachability.
The photograph captures a moment of interaction between staff and customer during service, reflecting the informal, social nature of street food culture. The surrounding market setting situates the business within one of London's best-known food destinations, popular with office workers, residents, and tourists.
Taken indoors under artificial lighting within the covered market, the image is well suited to editorial use covering London street food, independent food businesses, Italian cuisine, market culture, casual dining, and the everyday life of Old Spitalfields Market.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PF5630 - Close-up studio photograph of a used Italian €1.40 Postaprioritaria postage stamp issued in 2004 for priority correspondence. The small rectangular stamp has a brown outer field, a vivid green central panel and a white perforated edge. A bold black circular postal cancellation crosses the centre, while lighter ink marks and handling wear show that the adhesive was genuinely used on mailed correspondence. Visible printed details include ITALIA along the left side, the wording posta prioritaria across the top, the denomination € 1,40 at lower right and the printer inscription I.P.Z.S. S.p.A. ROMA 2004 along the bottom margin.
The ordinary definitive issue was released on 10 January 2004 for the Italian priority-mail service at the second-weight domestic tariff. Its functional graphic design uses dotted boundary lines, simple typography and a bright colour panel intended to make priority postage immediately recognisable during postal handling. The image records the transition from traditional national currency to euro-denominated postal rates during the early years of euro notes and coins in everyday European use.
Photographed against a plain black background, the isolated stamp reveals the halftone printing, paper texture, toothed perforations, cancellation ink and small signs of use. The composition is suitable for editorial subjects involving Italian postal history, philately, stamp collecting, European communications, letter writing, postal tariffs, graphic design, printed ephemera and the changing material culture of correspondence. Once an ordinary item used to pay for faster delivery, the cancelled stamp now survives as a modest collectible and documentary artefact of Italy's postal system in the early twenty-first century. The overlapping postmark and worn lower edge give the object the character of circulated mail. Its design provides a visual reference for collectors cataloguing modern Italian issues by denomination, cancellation and condition.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AT9E83 - The Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of the Two Worlds) is an annual summer music and opera festival held each June to early July in Spoleto, Italy, since its founding by composer Gian Carlo Menotti in 1958. It features a vast array of concerts, opera, dance, drama, visual arts and roundtable discussions on science.
The Two Worlds in the name of the festival comes from Gian Carlo Menotti's intention to have the worlds of American and European culture facing each other in his event
this concept would then be strengthened by the fact that it was held in conjunction with its twin, the Spoleto Festival USA held annually in May/June in Charleston, South Carolina. That twinning lasted some 15 years and, after growing disputes between the Menotti family and the board of Spoleto Festival USA, in the early 1990s a separation occurred. Under Menotti's direction in 1986, a third installment in the Spoleto Festival series was held in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne's Spoleto Festival changed its name to the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts in 1990.
Following Menotti's death in 2007, changes occurred in the administration with the result that the Italian Minister of Cultural Affairs appointed a new Artistic Administrator who continues to run the Festival.
