The image can illustrate independent retail, shop vacancies, town-centre decline, local business pressures, commercial property, regeneration, high street economics and the challenges facing traditional retail premises. The brick building and street-level shopfront give the scene a recognisable suburban or local-centre character.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F1T9PC - Hancock & Wood department store on Bridge Street in Warrington town centre, Cheshire, pictured during its closing-down sale after announcing the end of 112 years of independent trading. The family-run retailer was founded in 1914 by Frederick Hancock and remained under fourth-generation family ownership, becoming one of Warrington's longest-established and most recognisable shops. Large red banners across the ground-floor windows proclaim Closing Down Forever and Grand Sale , contrasting with the familiar green Hancock & Wood sign above the entrance.
The traditional red-brick frontage retains ornate pale stone detailing, tall sash-style windows, decorative cornices and upper-floor window boxes filled with plants. Flags hang from the building beneath a clear blue sky, while the modern shop canopy and promotional signage show the final retail activity below the historic upper storeys. The image records a significant moment in Warrington's commercial history and the continuing loss of independently owned department stores from British town centres.
Management attributed the closure to increasing employment costs, utility charges, business rates and regulation. A storewide clearance offered reductions as remaining stock was sold. The departure of Hancock & Wood leaves a prominent gap in Bridge Street's retail frontage and represents the end of a business that served generations of local shoppers through changes in shopping habits, town-centre development and competition from retail parks, supermarkets and online commerce.
The scene has wider relevance to high-street decline, family-business succession, retail economics, heritage shopfronts and the changing function of town centres. The premises, associated with the Hancock family for more than a century, were expected to be offered for sale following closure. Visible signs, shop windows, architecture and bright daylight provide a clear editorial record of the final chapter for this Warrington institution

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EPRP2H - A wide panoramic view inside the redeveloped Warrington Market shows a busy Saturday afternoon in the modern Cookhouse food hall, with customers eating, drinking and socialising at tables beneath the building's high arched roof. Independent food and drink stalls line both sides of the central seating area, while the glazed entrance and open-plan layout create a bright, contemporary atmosphere. The scene captures the market as a successful town-centre leisure destination rather than simply a traditional place to buy produce.
The current Warrington Market building opened in July 2020 as part of Warrington Borough Council's £142 million Time Square regeneration scheme. The development replaced the former market building and brought together the new market, council offices, cinema, restaurants, public space and parking in a major renewal of this part of the town centre. The purpose-built market contains around 60 business units across ground-floor and mezzanine levels, supporting independent traders selling fresh food, groceries, gifts, services and prepared meals.
At the heart of the building, the Cookhouse provides communal seating and a choice of cuisines from independent kitchens, alongside bars and evening opening on Fridays and Saturdays. This makes the venue suitable for lunch, informal dining, family visits, meetings and nightlife as well as shopping. The photograph shows strong customer footfall, mixed-age groups, relaxed weekend dining and the social role of an indoor market in helping regenerate a British town centre.
The image can illustrate retail-led regeneration, local enterprise, independent hospitality, indoor food halls urban renewal, high-street recovery, public investment modern market architecture, consumer spending, community gathering places and the changing role of traditional markets. The broad panorama records the scale of the hall, its steel roof structure, natural light, circulation space and lively mix of traders and customers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ER9NG5 - Shop-window display at Hancock & Wood on Bridge Street in Warrington, Cheshire, celebrates 110 years of the independent family department store, with the dates 1914 to 2024 printed in gold over a mannequin wearing a bright pink dress. The photograph records a familiar town-centre retailer shortly before a major change in Warrington's shopping history. Hancock & Wood was founded in 1914 by Frederick Hancock and David Wood and remained in family ownership for four generations, trading from the same Bridge Street site. Although the anniversary display marks 110 years, the business announced in June 2026 that the physical store would close later that year after 112 years of trading.
The closure announcement made the image newly significant as documentary photography of a disappearing British high-street institution. The company cited employment costs, public utilities, business rates and legislation among the pressures behind its decision. Its departure reflects wider challenges affecting independent department stores and family retailers, including changing shopping habits, internet competition, operating costs and declining town-centre footfall. For generations of local customers, Hancock & Wood offered fashion, accessories, beauty products, gifts, homewares and a café, combining personal service with a strong local identity.
Reflections in the glass place the anniversary graphic within the active streetscape of central Warrington, while the colourful fabric backdrop and formal retail display contrast with the later news of closure. The image can illustrate retail heritage, business longevity, shop closures, economic pressure on small firms, high-street decline, changing consumer behaviour, independent retail, family enterprise and town-centre regeneration. It also preserves a visual record of Bridge Street before one of Warrington's oldest independent shops ceased trading, ending more than a century of continuity at 25-29 Bridge Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENF26K - Street scene at Knutsford Makers Market in Cheshire, England, showing Princess Street and Silk Mill Street filled with independent stalls, shoppers and families during the monthly Sunday market. The image captures a lively town-centre retail and leisure event, with black and white market gazebos, framed artwork, craft displays, plants, flowers, visitors pushing a pram and people browsing on a pedestrianised shopping street. The overcast sky and soft daylight suggest a mild but grey market day, typical of north west England, while the brick buildings, shopfronts, hanging bunting, traditional upper-storey windows and the visible street layout give the photograph a strong sense of place. Knutsford Makers Market is promoted as an outdoor artisan market held on the first Sunday of the month, bringing Princess Street and Silk Mill Street alive with art, craft, food, drink, coffee, music, street food and entertainment. The picture is useful for editorial and commercial themes around high street revival, independent retail, local enterprise, visitor economy, Cheshire market towns, weekend shopping, community events, small businesses, makers, artists, food traders, town-centre footfall and alternatives to out-of-town retail. Knutsford itself is a well-known Cheshire market town with an attractive historic centre, independent shops and links to nearby Tatton Park, making the market part of a wider destination offer for residents, day trippers and visitors from Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Visible details include the 20 mph street sign, planters, display easels, stall canopies, shop signs, decorative bunting and a mix of adults, children and families moving through the market. The image can support stories about local shopping habits, artisan markets, public realm use, sustainable town-centre events, small traders, outdoor retail, place marketing and how regular markets help animate traditional high streets beyond normal weekday shopping.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENF28D - Handwritten chalkboard sign at Knutsford Makers Market asks dog owners to prevent their pets from urinating on plants displayed for sale. The message begins Health Hazard! and explains that affected plants cannot be sold after dogs have relieved themselves on them. It politely asks visitors to show respect for the trader's stock and concludes with Thank you. Flowering plants, metal tubs, garden containers, a watering can, wooden crates and a small £20 price label surround the freestanding board, placing the warning within an outdoor horticultural market stall.
The photograph records an everyday conflict between dog-friendly public spaces and the practical needs of independent retailers. Urine can contaminate pots, foliage, packaging and merchandise placed close to pavement level, leaving stock unpleasant to handle and potentially unsaleable. The wording focuses responsibility on dog owners, who are expected to supervise and control their animals around traders' goods. It also reflects the financial vulnerability of small businesses, for which damaged plants may represent a direct loss of income.
Knutsford Makers Market takes place around Princess Street and Silk Mill Street in the Cheshire town centre. The regular outdoor event brings together independent makers, food producers, artists, craft businesses and specialist traders. This candid retail sign offers a humorous but frustrated example of customer communication, responsible dog ownership, animal behaviour, pavement hygiene and consideration for others in a busy shopping environment.
The image is useful for editorial coverage of badly controlled pets, dog fouling concerns, health and hygiene, market trading, horticultural retail, damaged goods, antisocial behaviour, small-business pressures, public etiquette and the responsibilities accompanying dog ownership. It does not establish that any particular dog caused damage, but documents the trader's stated experience and request to customers

It is suitable for editorial coverage of Golden Square, Warrington shopping, Mediterranean food, olives, delicatessens, food retail, shopping centres, independent traders, prepared foods, consumer choice, speciality foods and changing high-street retail. The open kiosk format allows customers to browse fresh products directly from the mall and gives the image a clear everyday shopping context. Diners sit at outdoor tables beside the historic brick market building, with planters, wooden chairs, a glass canopy, open-fronted market hall architecture and a busy but relaxed town-centre atmosphere. The image captures Altrincham's modern hospitality scene, where a traditional market setting has become a popular food, drink and social destination in the Trafford borough. Altrincham's market heritage dates back to its medieval market-town role, while the contemporary Market House has helped reposition the town centre around independent food traders, shared seating, evening dining, casual drinks and family-friendly leisure. Visit Altrincham describes the market as part of the regeneration of the modern market town , and Visit Manchester lists Market House at Greenwood Street, WA14 1SA. The photograph is useful for editorial stories about town-centre revival, hospitality, public realm, independent food halls, market regeneration, safe evening leisure, social dining, urban lifestyle, Trafford destinations, Greater Manchester food culture and the changing role of historic market buildings. The visible outdoor seating and sociable arrangement also make it suitable for themes around summer eating out, café culture, communal tables, local economy, tourism, leisure spending, evening economy, place-making and the appeal of safe, secure, enjoyable public spaces. The partly cloudy sky, bright summer light, relaxed groups of diners and mix of heritage brickwork with modern canopy structure give the image a strong sense of place. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4BH2 - Warrington Food & Drink Festival on Sunday 17 May 2026, photographed on the lawn and event space beside Warrington Town Hall and Bank Park off Sankey Street. The wide view shows visitors sitting at long outdoor tables, a white marquee, food and drink stalls, trees in fresh spring leaf, blue sky, broken cloud and bright sunshine across the town centre grass. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of local food festivals, free family events, weekend leisure, civic spaces, high street footfall, outdoor dining, independent traders, market stalls, tourism, town centre regeneration, community events and the role of councils, BIDs and cultural partners in bringing people into centres.
The 2026 Warrington Food & Drink Festival was promoted as a two-day free event across Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May, taking place in Bank Park and the grounds of Warrington Town Hall. Public listings described street food, independent producers, local hospitality businesses, chef demonstrations, workshops, live activity and family entertainment. This image captures the pleasure of the event rather than a single stall: people eating, drinking, chatting and resting in a civic green space, with the red-brick and stone Town Hall visible beyond the marquee.
Warrington Town Hall adds strong heritage context. Originally built in 1750 as Bank Hall for merchant Thomas Patten and later acquired by the council in 1870, the Grade I listed Palladian building remains one of Warrington's best-known civic landmarks. Its grounds, famous for the Golden Gates at the Sankey Street entrance, make a distinctive setting for a modern food and drink festival. The photograph links Georgian civic architecture, public parkland and contemporary placemaking, making it relevant to stories about Warrington, Cheshire events, North West England tourism, local economies, hospitality, cultural programming, public space, community wellbeing and the continuing use of historic town halls as active civic venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG76R - Street photograph of a Leeds Tattoo Expo poster displayed on an advertising panel on The Headrow in Leeds city centre, West Yorkshire. The poster uses bold vintage tattoo flash styling, red lettering, decorative scrollwork, a female pin-up style portrait, peacock fan imagery and circus or fairground-inspired graphic design to promote tickets for the tattoo convention. It is a strong editorial image for tattoo culture, body art, urban advertising, alternative fashion, creative events, youth culture and the wider growth of tattooing as a mainstream leisure and lifestyle industry. The poster's wording includes Leeds Tattoo Expo, First Direct Arena and tickets on sale now, tying the street promotion to the city's major indoor venue and live events economy. The official Leeds Tattoo Expo information page says the eleventh annual event is being held at First Direct Arena, with over 200 tattoo artists, boutique traders, entertainment and competitions, giving the image relevance for tattoo artists, collectors, independent makers and specialist event marketing. The photograph is also useful for stories about Leeds city centre, The Headrow, public realm advertising, poster art, graphic design, subcultures moving into mainstream venues, city break entertainment and the commercial promotion of weekend events. The weather appears dull or overcast, with soft daylight on the pavement and building façade, suggesting a typical British urban day without strong shadows. The image captures the contrast between ornate tattoo-inspired illustration and the formal stone architecture of central Leeds, helping it work as a stock image for alternative culture within a traditional civic cityscape. It can support features on tattoos, body modification, personal identity, event ticketing, local tourism, creative industries, independent traders, street-level marketing and the way specialist cultural scenes are promoted in busy northern city centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG7CW - Wide panoramic view inside Leeds Corn Exchange in Leeds city centre, West Yorkshire, showing the dramatic oval trading hall, curved upper gallery, patterned glazed roof and rows of arched shopfronts now occupied by independent retailers. The image records one of the city's most distinctive Victorian commercial buildings, designed by Cuthbert Brodrick and opened in the 1860s when Leeds was expanding rapidly as a major centre of trade, cloth, finance and civic ambition. Originally built for the buying and selling of grain, the Corn Exchange has been reused as a shopping, food, craft and creative retail destination, making it a strong visual example of adaptive reuse, heritage regeneration and town centre placemaking. The broad angle captures the full sweep of the circular interior, from timber floorboards and black metal balustrades to colourful unit doors, café seating, shoppers, browsers and people resting in the central space below. It is useful for editorial themes around Victorian architecture, listed buildings, independent shopping, alternative retail, city centre regeneration, reuse of historic property, high street change, local makers, small businesses and visitor attractions in Yorkshire. The curved plan, repeated arches and roof structure emphasise Brodrick's confident engineering and the building's continuing public life. Photographed indoors in soft natural daylight filtered through the glass roof, the scene has an even, calm atmosphere with no harsh shadows, suggesting a cloudy or bright overcast day outside. The image also has value for stories about heritage-led economic renewal, the move away from conventional chain retail, sustainable reuse of existing buildings, tourism, shopping habits after online disruption and Leeds as a northern city balancing commercial history with a contemporary independent cultural scene. Visible seating and shopfronts give the space scale, making the panorama useful for travel, retail and architecture features.

The positive statement reflects the building's modern role as a home for independent retailers, designers, makers and creative small businesses, while the ornate surroundings reveal its origins as one of the city's most significant Victorian commercial buildings.
Decorative black wrought-iron railings dominate the foreground, with shoppers and visitors visible behind them on the upper gallery. Above, the sweeping curved glass roof, ornamental plasterwork, classical columns and royal coat of arms create a highly symmetrical architectural composition. Natural daylight enters through the glazed dome and illuminates the building's distinctive elliptical interior.
Leeds Corn Exchange was designed by Victorian architect Cuthbert Brodrick and constructed between 1861 and 1863 as a trading venue for corn merchants. Brodrick was also responsible for Leeds Town Hall. The Grade I listed building later declined as traditional corn trading disappeared and was converted into a specialist retail centre during 1989 and 1990.
Today, the Corn Exchange is closely associated with independent shopping, artisan businesses, fashion, food, design and Leeds' creative culture. The We Are The Creators message reinforces this contemporary identity while connecting the entrepreneurs occupying the building with its longstanding commercial history.
The photograph is suitable for editorial use relating to Leeds tourism, Victorian architecture, heritage conservation, adaptive reuse, independent retail, creative industries, local enterprise, shopping destinations and the regeneration of historic city-centre buildings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EKNXPF - Arthur Welham Ltd, a long-established fishmonger stall inside Leeds Kirkgate Market, with large blue-and-white signage advertising Fresh local & exotic fish and established over 100 years . The scene is in the covered market hall, where shoppers browse iced trays of fish and seafood beneath the adjoining Ramsdens sign, with other retail signage visible in the background. It is a documentary image of a surviving food trader within one of the best-known municipal markets in northern England, useful for editorial features on high streets, independent retail, food provenance, fresh fish, market shopping, family firms, changing habits and the survival of specialist traders in city centres. Arthur Welham is linked with Ramsdens, another Leeds fishmonger name visible in the photograph, and local history material records the two stalls as part of one family-run business, with the Ramsden family connected to Arthur Welham's business since the late 1960s. Leeds City Council has also described the Ramsdens stall as a family business of more than 100 years. The image captures the practical retail culture of a British indoor market: bright stall fascias, tiled walls, stacked crates, chilled displays, winter clothing, market staff in aprons and customers making everyday food purchases. Kirkgate Market is associated with Leeds civic commerce and food shopping, from historic covered halls to modern city-centre regeneration, and remains a useful visual shorthand for Yorkshire retail heritage. For stock photography buyers, the value is in the readable business name, visible produce, recognisable Leeds market setting and human activity. It can illustrate stories about traditional fishmongers, fresh seafood, local food economies, market halls, independent family trade, urban shopping, northern England, retail resilience, heritage markets and the contrast between long-established specialist stalls and newer mobile or convenience outlets nearby.

The visible menu and shop sign link the photograph directly with everyday high street food, takeaway culture and the rising cost of a fish supper, with cod, haddock, chips, pies, sausages, sauces and meal deals forming part of the familiar language of British fish and chip shops. The Fish Hut is listed at 27 Liverpool Road, Manchester, M3 4NW, close to Castlefield, Deansgate and the Science and Industry Museum area, making it part of the food offer around one of Manchester's busiest visitor and nightlife districts. The image has strong editorial value for stories about fish and chips, casual dining, independent takeaways, food inflation, energy bills, hospitality pressures, staff costs, ingredient prices, city centre rents and the squeeze on food businesses and customers. Fish and chips remain one of Britain's most recognisable takeaway meals, but the scene can also illustrate how a simple fish supper has become a sharper cost of living symbol as prices rise across food, cooking oil, white fish, potatoes, packaging and utilities. The photograph shows a clean, modernised interior, with digital screens, a black menu wall, bright counter lighting and prepared food ready for service. The visible customers and staff add human context without making any individual the sole subject. The indoor setting means there is no visible weather, although the lighting and muted window view suggest a daytime or early evening city centre visit. This commercially useful stock image suits features on Manchester eating out, British takeaway culture, fish and chip shops, hospitality economics, consumer spending, inflation, local business survival and changing urban food habits.

Known locally as The Pev, the pub stands as a small, detached triangular survivor amid much taller offices, apartments and modern development, giving the scene a strong contrast between old Manchester drinking culture and the newer built environment around it. The glazed green and yellow ceramic tiled frontage, painted name band, decorative doorway and hanging pub sign make it one of the most instantly recognisable traditional boozers in Manchester. Central Manchester CAMRA lists Peveril of the Peak at 127 Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester, M1 5JQ, and describes its real ale, real fire, separate bars and historic character. CAMRA's heritage pub listing says the green tiled exterior hides an interior with polished wood, stained glass and traditional bench seating, with original bell pushes still present in parts of the pub. Historic England lists the building as Grade II, with the statutory address of 127 Chepstow Street, reflecting its corner position between Chepstow Street and Great Bridgewater Street. The image has strong editorial and commercial value for stories about Manchester pubs, CAMRA, cask ale, real ale, pub preservation, listed buildings, hospitality, nightlife, local identity, urban heritage and the survival of proper city centre pubs. The calm dusk setting, glowing windows and empty street frontage give the photograph a slightly nostalgic mood, suggesting an evening pint before the pub fills up. This is a useful stock image for features on British pub culture, northern social history, traditional pub architecture, Manchester tourism, conservation, changing city centres, independent hospitality and the continuing appeal of classic real ale houses.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4MB4 - Traditional Sweeties is photographed inside Wigan Market Hall, a busy indoor market in Wigan town centre, Greater Manchester. The image shows an old fashioned sweet stall packed with jars, tubs, trays and hanging packets of confectionery, with signage advertising traditional sweeties, handmade sweets, candy floss, chocolates, popcorn, cakes and ice cold cans. It captures the colourful detail of a long established British market retail tradition, where sweets are sold loose by weight, displayed in clear containers and chosen from counters rather than supermarket shelving. The stall includes retro sweets, pick and mix, boiled sweets, lollipops, wrapped candy, fudge, chocolate bars, biscuits and children's treats, making it useful for editorial themes around local shopping, town centre markets, independent traders, nostalgia, childhood memories and the continuing appeal of traditional confectionery. The indoor setting, strip lighting, glass display cabinets and dense stock presentation give the photograph a documentary feel, showing the everyday character of Wigan's covered market economy rather than a staged shop interior. It can illustrate stories about high street change, market halls, small businesses, retail regeneration, local food culture, family treats, sugar, childhood consumption, impulse buying and the survival of specialist stalls in northern English towns. The scene also has strong visual keywords for old fashioned sweet shop, retro candy, British sweets, confectionery counter, pick n mix, jars of sweets, market stall, Wigan shopping, Greater Manchester retail, independent trader, local market, indoor market hall and town centre consumer culture. The bright colours and full shelves suggest a working stall open for trade, photographed under artificial indoor lighting with no visible exterior weather, giving a clear sense of a sheltered market environment suitable for year round shopping.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4C96 - Vintage Viola is pictured at 10a Old Market Place in Golden Square Shopping Centre, Warrington, with its bold black shopfront sign and white script logo above the entrance. The shop was created through the River Reeves Foundation, established in memory of River Reeves, guitarist with Warrington indie band Viola Beach. The image has strong editorial value because it connects a local charity shop and community space with one of the most poignant music stories associated with the town. Viola Beach were a young Warrington band whose final line-up included Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin. All four band members and their manager Craig Tarry died after a road accident in Södertälje, Sweden, in February 2016, while returning from their first overseas tour. Their music, including Swings & Waterslides and Boys That Sing , gained wider public attention after the tragedy and the band became closely associated with Warrington's grassroots music scene, youth creativity and local pride. Vintage Viola developed as a charity shop, fundraising outlet and community space linked with the Foundation's work supporting young people in the arts and mental health initiatives. The photograph is useful for editorial themes including Warrington music history, Viola Beach, River Reeves, charitable fundraising, youth arts support, independent retail, community reuse of town centre shops, Golden Square Shopping Centre, local memorial projects and the legacy of a much-loved North West band. Visible wording includes Vintage Viola and a plaque referencing River Reeves Foundation and Vintage Viola. The scene is outdoors or semi-covered in daylight, with no rain visible, and the red brick flats above the fascia place the shop within central Warrington's retail environment. This is a documentary image of a real shopfront and memorial-linked community project, suitable for stories about music, grief, local activism, charity retail and town-centre regeneration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9APAB - A close, editorial still life of a vintage E G Parriss wristwatch laid across an old town plan of Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The aged cream dial, Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds register and worn leather strap give the photograph a strong period feel, linking personal timekeeping with local history, family business, craftsmanship and the Midlands tradition of practical engineering. The map beneath shows the printed title Town Plan of Nuneaton and surrounding streets, turning the image into a compact visual story about place, memory and the skilled repair and making of watches and clocks before disposable consumer electronics. E G Parriss is a name connected with Nuneaton horology: the Science Museum Group records the Parriss rolling-ball free pendulum clock as made by E G Parriss in Nuneaton in the 1940s. Separate Parriss family jeweller history also describes a watchmaking line that began with Joseph Parriss in Rugby, with Ernest Parriss and Beatrice later opening a shop in Nuneaton before moving to Sheringham in 1947. This photograph is useful for searches around British watchmakers, local jewellers, antique watches, interwar or early twentieth century design, family firms, craft skills, horological heritage, collectable wristwatches, Warwickshire history, Nuneaton nostalgia, old maps, town planning, genealogy, local archives and the passing of time. The warm patina of the dial contrasts with the black and white printed map, making it suitable for editorial use around regional manufacturing, the survival of small specialist trades, vintage retail, repair culture, museum collections, family history research and the way everyday objects can anchor a story about a town. It could also illustrate articles on high street jewellers, inherited possessions, analogue technology, conservation, restoration, watch servicing, local studies, historic mapping and the value of named provincial makers outside London, Coventry and Birmingham.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PW3J - Close-up view of the green Hancock & Wood shop sign above the shuttered entrance of the independent department store on Bridge Street in Warrington town centre. The distinctive script logo includes the words Since 1914 , highlighting the history of a family-run retailer that became one of Warrington's familiar high street businesses. Photographed in daylight, the lowered metal shutters and quiet frontage create a subdued documentary image of a traditional shop approaching the end of an era.
Hancock & Wood was founded by Frederick Hancock in 1914 and continued trading from the same Bridge Street site through four generations of the family. Over more than a century it served local shoppers with clothing, footwear, lingerie, accessories, gifts and a café, surviving two world wars, redevelopment, national-chain competition and the coronavirus pandemic. In 2026 the owners announced that the store would close after 112 years, thanking generations of staff, customers and suppliers who had supported the business.
The company said the decision had not been taken lightly. It cited rising employment costs, public utilities, business rates and complex legislation, pressures difficult for independent retailers occupying substantial bricks-and-mortar premises. The closure also reflects wider changes affecting British high streets, including reduced footfall, online shopping, retail parks, supermarkets, rising energy costs and changing consumer habits.
The photograph focuses on the surviving identity of the business rather than a busy shopping scene. The green fascia, historic lettering, red-brick upper floors and closed security shutters form a record of Warrington's commercial heritage at a moment of transition. It suits editorial themes involving department-store closures, struggling independent shops, high street decline, local economic change, retail nostalgia, family businesses and the disappearance of long-established names from British town centres.

The visible orange co-working banner, green café banner, large Outset window graphics and Arpley Street sign create strong documentary detail for coverage of modern workspaces, shared offices, business communities, networking, entrepreneurship and local economic development. It can also illustrate Warrington's role as a business location between Manchester and Liverpool, with good rail access and a growing professional services base. The image works for features about start-up culture, independent workers, hot desking, meeting-room hire, office downsizing, workspace subscriptions, business incubators and the challenge of keeping town centres active during the working day. As a stock image, it records a practical example of how older urban office space is being rebranded around collaboration, convenience and community rather than conventional long lease offices.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F0EE1J - A brushed brass plaque bearing the words JUDI DENCH PLAYHOUSE is mounted at an angle against a rich purple interior wall at The Questors Theatre in Ealing, West London. Bold black capital lettering gives the sign a clear, formal appearance, while four visible corner fixings secure the rectangular nameplate to the wall. Directional lighting falls across the metallic surface, creating highlights and reflections that contrast strongly with the deep purple background. The close composition concentrates attention on the celebrated name and the identity of the performance space rather than the wider theatre interior.
The Judi Dench Playhouse is the principal auditorium at The Questors Theatre on Mattock Lane, close to Ealing Broadway. The venue describes the Playhouse as a 350-seat theatre, accompanied by a smaller 90-seat Studio. The main performance space was renamed in honour of Dame Judi Dench during celebrations marking the theatre building's fiftieth anniversary. Dench has maintained a long association with The Questors and has served as its president since the 1980s, connecting one of Britain's most acclaimed stage and screen performers with a major community theatre organisation.
The Questors was founded in 1929 by a group of young theatre enthusiasts and established a permanent home in Ealing during the 1930s. Its purpose-built theatre was completed during the 1960s, providing an adaptable auditorium for drama, comedy, classical productions, new writing and visiting performances. The organisation has subsequently developed into one of London's best-known non-professional theatre companies, combining public performances with acting courses, youth theatre, directing, technical production, costume work and other backstage activities.
This simple interior detail represents British theatrical heritage, local cultural participation and the importance of volunteer-led performance. The prominent plaque also illustrates celebrity recognition, theatre naming etc

The Pavilion Building forms part of the wider Pavilion Gardens complex, a historic Edwardian leisure and events space near the centre of Buxton, a spa town renowned for its Georgian and Victorian architecture and its role as a gateway to the Peak District National Park. The scene captures contemporary British outdoor drinking culture, combining heritage surroundings with modern hospitality and tourism. The Harrogate Bus Company operates both local and regional bus services in North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, England. It is a subsidiary of Transdev Blazefield
In July 2016, the company was again rebranded, now operating as The Harrogate Bus Company. To coincide with this, a huge fleet upgrade was undertaken, which included the introduction of the current two-tone red livery, as well as a refurbishment of the company's route 1 branded single-deck Wright Eclipse Urban bodied Volvo B7RLE vehicles to set the new standard specification of free WiFi, USB charging capabilities and audio/visual next stop information. Other Wright Eclipse Urban vehicles were transferred from some of Transdev's other subsidiaries to replace the older Wright Renown bodied Volvo B10BLE single-decker vehicles which were branded for the route. 2016 also saw the launch of 14 new high-specification Wright Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5TL double-deck vehicles on the route 36, replacing the older Wright Eclipse Gemini vehicles. The 36 also received its own new brand “ Riding Redefined “ as well as a new two-tone red and black livery. In July 2017, a new brand was introduced for the route 770/771, which saw the services become renumbered alongside the new brand name known as Superior 70/71. A fleet of Wright Eclipse Urban 2 bodied Volvo B7RLE single-deck vehicles were transferred from Transdev's operations in Burnley and refurbished to equip them with WiFi, USB charging capabilities and audio/visual next stop information. The new fleet entered service on the route on 23 July, eventually replacing the entire fleet of Volvo B10BLE Wright Renown vehicles, which then left the fleet in 2018. In April 2018, due to the loss of council funding for the 70 to Connexionsbuses, the 71 was again renumbered and rebranded, now known as Simple 7.
In partnership with DalesBus, the service between Harrogate and Skipton was reintroduced in May 2021

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ40 - This image shows the exterior of Radio Northwich, a community radio station based in Northwich, Cheshire. The station operates as a local, non-commercial broadcaster, providing a mix of music, local news, interviews, and community-focused programming aimed at serving residents of Northwich and the surrounding area.
Radio Northwich broadcasts on FM locally and also streams online, reflecting the hybrid nature of modern community radio in the UK. Programming typically includes locally produced shows, specialist music output, and coverage of local events, charities, and voluntary groups, with a strong emphasis on community participation and volunteering.
The station is independently run and community-owned, operating on a not-for-profit basis rather than as part of a national commercial radio network. Community radio stations such as Radio Northwich play an important role in local media ecosystems, particularly as traditional local newspapers and commercial radio services have declined.
The photograph appears to have been taken in late-day light, with warm reflections visible in the glass frontage of the building. The modern exterior places the station firmly within Northwich town centre, highlighting the visibility and accessibility of community media within everyday urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23DD - A view along Woburn Walk in Bloomsbury, central London, showing outdoor café seating and small independent businesses at numbers 3“5 Woburn Walk. The narrow pedestrian street is lined with Georgian terraced buildings, creating an intimate village-like atmosphere within the city centre.
Woburn Walk is one of London's earliest purpose-built pedestrian shopping streets and is closely associated with Bloomsbury's literary and cultural history. Today it remains a popular destination for cafés, specialist shops, and local visitors, blending residential architecture with relaxed street-level social life.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image captures everyday urban activity in central London, illustrating themes of café culture, historic streets, conservation areas, and the continued appeal of small-scale pedestrian environments in the capital. Seen in places like Woburn Walk, the idea that London neighbourhoods are uniformly dangerous quickly falls apart, yet the lazy narrative persists that the capital and its suburbs are defined by knife crime and disorder rather than by ordinary, peaceful life. Woburn Walk is quietly pedestrian, lined with small shops and cafes, people talking over coffee, children passing through, and neighbours using the street as an extension of their living space, a scene far closer to a village high street than to the sensational headlines that dominate national coverage. The reality is that most London streets, suburban and central alike, function exactly like this most of the time, shaped by routine, community habits, and long-established social norms rather than constant threat. Crime does exist, as it does in any large city, but the disproportionate focus on the most extreme incidents distorts public perception and flattens a complex urban landscape into something unrecognisable to those who actually live there. Woburn Walk, calm, human-scaled and socially active, stands as a quiet rebuttal to that caricature, illustrating difference.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F12E0C - Wincle Coronation bitter or ale pump clip displayed beside a freshly poured pint of beer on a British pub bar. The pump branding sits in front of a bank of traditional cask ale handpulls, creating a clear real-ale and pub interior scene. A numbered judging or tasting card is also visible on the counter, suggesting the photograph may have been taken during a beer event, festival or organised tasting. The image is suitable for editorial coverage of British pubs, real ale, cask beer, independent breweries, brewing, beer festivals, CAMRA culture, pub interiors, handpulls, beer judging and traditional drinking culture. The close view of the branded pump clip and pint provides strong commercial and product context while retaining the atmosphere of a working pub bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFA9XY - Situated in the centre of Godalming, Record Corner first opened its doors in 1958 selling new vinyl records to the music lovers of Surrey and beyond. Our purpose was, and remains today, to provide a musical haven for every listener, across all musical genres. We continue to pride ourselves on our ability to offer knowledge and expertise alongside a personal service to every customer - whether they be a classical buff, indie kid or head! We revel in sourcing the obscure, rare, old, as well as new, and as times change and new technologies emerge, so too has Record Corner adapted it's offering to remain at the forefront of music retail.
Over the course of the last year's national lock-downs, we devoted our time to giving the shop the refresh it deserved. With a new coat of paint, upgraded displays and tons of second-hand vinyl, we take great pride in what we have achieved during such difficult times. Perhaps the biggest change of all is our state-of-the-art coffee machine. Being located so close to larger coffee chains, we knew we had to stand out if we were to succeed. After spending time sampling local competition and hiring the best barista in town, we truly believe our coffee is the the most delicious you will find.
As restrictions are slowly being lifted and life is getting back to normal, we look forward to seeing more of our incredible customers coming through our door for a coffee and a browse. We couldn't be more excited about the future of Record Corner - we have so many plans and ideas to see us into the next 60 years that we would love you to be part of.

On 8 May 2019 MMO marine officers visited HG Lovitts and requested all of the submitted sales notes that they had for first sale purchases of fish. During this visit two receipt books were removed for further assessment, which showed over 370 purchases of fish had non-submitted sales notes.
Mr Lovitt pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a fine of £4,000, £1,230 in costs and a £190 victim surcharge.

Victoria Bridge was built in 1837, the year Queen Victoria ascended the throne, hence the name. This new bridge replaced an old and narrow hump-backed pack-saddle one. Indeed, the original line of the road that led over the bridge, down Smithy Fold, and along Ellison Street is traceable, and is preserved particularly in the buildings of the Brook Tavern, Cafeteria, Glossop Pizza, Balti Palace (all built in 1832).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY56XC - Crewe Market enjoys a rich history dating back to 1854, when The Cheese Hall was erected, housing over 2,000 tonnes of Cheshire cheese. A Corn Exchange and warehouse were built next door for butter and bacon, and over time the market cemented itself as a vibrant general market for Crewe.
Markets have been continually evolving for centuries, and the early 2000's saw the rise of online shopping, supermarkets and discount stores creating challenges for Crewe's General Market.
The Market Hall building needed investment to make it suitable for 21st-century shopping habits, in order to support a wide community of small businesses.
Crewe market has recently undergone major redevelopment works to breathe fresh life into this historic building. The historic Shambles units have been sympathetically restored, using heritage colours and materials to celebrate the market's history, while making it fit for an exciting future.
In May 2021, Crewe Market reopened, home to an exciting selection of independent businesses offering street food, fresh food and retail goods.
Crewe Market traders are local to the Crewe area, and represent the high standards of quality, customer service and passion that make small businesses the backbone of our town centres. Find out more about our traders here.
The Market Hall is now a mixed-use destination venue, offering customers the chance to shop, eat, drink, rest and play, with a weekly programme of family-friendly entertainment, and a regular schedule of pop-up and speciality markets, community events and family activities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JYYR45 - A busy interior view of Mackie Mayor, the informal food hall occupying the restored Smithfield Market Hall at 1 Eagle Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Visitors sit around long communal wooden tables, eating, drinking and socialising beneath the building's tall glazed roof. The open seating arrangement allows customers buying from different independent food and drink traders to share the same central dining space.
Large industrial-style pendant lights hang above the tables, while slender cast-iron columns support the historic market structure. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, roof glazing and surviving architectural details retain the character of the Victorian building. Contemporary counters, chalkboard menus and illuminated signs have been inserted around the perimeter without concealing the original scale and industrial appearance of the hall.
Mackie Mayor occupies a Grade II listed building constructed in 1858 as part of Manchester's former Smithfield Market complex. It is one of the surviving original market buildings from a district that once played an important role in the wholesale and retail distribution of food across the rapidly growing industrial city. The name commemorates Ivie Mackie, who served as Mayor of Manchester during the nineteenth century.
Following restoration and adaptive reuse, the building reopened as a food hall containing a collection of independent operators offering meals, snacks, coffee, beer and other drinks. The communal layout creates a more informal experience than a conventional restaurant, allowing groups to select food from different vendors while remaining seated together.
The photograph captures families, couples and groups using the hall in a relaxed and lively atmosphere. The combination of historic architecture, shared seating, independent businesses and contemporary hospitality illustrates the successful reuse of a former commercial market building.

It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and the Eastgate clock on top of it is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was designated as a Grade I listed building on 28 July 1955

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5MP - Time After Time presents a colourful and densely arranged shopfront at 30 High Street in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Vintage clothing hangs on rails beside wicker baskets, woven bags, furniture, decorative objects and assorted collectables, while a wooden rocking horse, old pram and black plush animal add character to the pavement display. The open doorway and large windows offer a glimpse into the packed interior, creating the impression of a traditional treasure trove rather than a conventional modern fashion shop.
The independent business specialises in hand-picked vintage and designer clothing, jewellery, accessories and homewares for men and women. Its stock spans many periods, from Victorian and Edwardian pieces through twentieth-century fashions including the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The owners developed the business from vintage fairs held in Stroud and Oxford, later establishing the bricks-and-mortar shop on Stroud's Upper High Street.
The image captures the appeal of browsing an independent retailer where individual garments and objects are displayed outside to attract passing shoppers. A blue polka-dot dress, orange garments, wickerwork and reused household items create a lively mixture of colours, textures and shapes. Bright natural daylight illuminates the facade and pavement, while the absence of customers gives an unobstructed view of the merchandise and shop entrance.
Vintage and second-hand retail has wider relevance to sustainable fashion, reuse, recycling and the circular economy. Buying pre-owned clothing can extend the life of garments and provide an alternative to fast fashion, while antique furniture and household goods preserve objects that might otherwise be discarded. The photograph is suitable for editorial themes including independent shops, British high streets, vintage style, ethical shopping, small businesses, local tourism, fashion history, consumer choice and the distinctive retail character of Stroud.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8W6 - Chipping Norton Town Hall is a municipal building in the Market Place, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England. The building, which is used as an events venue, is a Grade II* listed building.
The first municipal building in the town was a guildhall which was built for the Guild of the Holy Trinity in 1520.
The new building was designed by George Stanley Repton in the Palladian style, built in ashlar stone and was completed in 1842. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with nine bays facing onto the east side of the High Street. It featured a flight of seven steps leading up to a tetrastyle portico with Doric order columns supporting an entablature and a pediment
there were niches in the outer bays on the front elevation. The western elevation was arcaded on the ground floor and was fenestrated by seven tall sash windows flanked by pilasters supporting an entablature
there were again niches in the end bays, which slightly projected forward. The end elevations were arcaded on the ground floor and were fenestrated by rows of three sash windows flanked by pilasters supporting entablatures and pediments. The northern pediment contained a clock in the tympanum and was surmounted by a bellcote. Internally, the principal rooms on the ground floor were the four cells for the incarceration of pretty criminals, the weighbridge for measuring the weight of goods being traded and the space for the horse-drawn fire engine, while the principal room on the first floor was the council chamber which was also used as a court room

Founded in 1985 by Peter Amor, it has become one of Britain's leading independent breweries. In 2002 Peter Amor's son, Vernon Amor, became managing director
Wye Valley Brewery traces its ancestry to the Abbey Brewery, which was founded in November 1981 and operated from the owner's garage in Stainton, Rotherham. In mid-1982, Abbey Brewery located to Retford, Nottinghamshire with a capacity of at most 20bbl per week. After being bought in 1983 by Peter Amor, a former brewer for Guinness who also worked for H. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJYREY - Carnaby Street is a pedestrianised shopping street in Soho in the City of Westminster, Central London. Close to Oxford Street and Regent Street, it is home to fashion and lifestyle retailers, including many independent fashion boutiques.
Streets crossing, or meeting with, Carnaby Street are, from south to north, Beak Street, Broadwick Street, Kingly Court, Ganton Street, Marlborough Court, Lowndes Court, Fouberts Place, Little Marlborough Street and Great Marlborough Street. The nearest London Underground station is Oxford Circus.
The Carnaby Street contingent of Swinging London stormed into North American and international awareness with the 15 April 1966 publication of Time magazine's cover story[16] that extolled this street's role:
Perhaps nothing illustrates the new swinging London better than narrow, three-block-long Carnaby Street, which is crammed with a cluster of the 'gear' boutiques where the girls and boys buy each other clothing
In October 1973, the Greater London Council pedestrianised the street.[18] Vehicular access is restricted between 11 am and 8 pm. A comparison of pedestrian traffic before and after the change revealed that there had been a 30% increase in the number of pedestrians entering the area. In early 2010, a campaign was commenced for pedestrianisation in the adjacent area of Soho
To celebrate the memory of Freddie Mercury after the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, the Carnaby Street arch got a rework with Queen's logo being put up in early 2019.
Despite John Stephen closing his final business in 1975 (he died in 2004 aged 70) and the gradual movement to novelty shops with an appeal to the ever-increasing tourist trade, the boutique trade founded in Carnaby Street in 1957 by Stephen is still visible through the many shops of that ilk that still exist in the street today. Although featured in many books about London, the only book published which is exclusively about Carnaby Street and traces the history from the 1600s to 1970

In 1993, Halkes left XL to form the EMI-owned commercial dance label Positiva, and subsequently his own independent commercial dance label Incentive. After Palmer retired in 1996, Russell took over the running of the business

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JAPXCC - High-level interior view across Warrington Market at 2 Time Square, Warrington, Cheshire. Photographed from the upper floor, the image looks over rows of independent market stalls, food counters and retail units arranged beneath a large steel-framed roof. Shoppers move through the central aisles while traders display fresh produce, flowers, meat, gifts and other goods. Union flag bunting and red, white and blue decorations are suspended throughout the hall, adding colour and a celebratory atmosphere to the contemporary indoor market.
The purpose-built market forms part of Warrington's Time Square regeneration and opened in July 2020. It replaced the temporary market operation used during redevelopment and brought traditional stalls, specialist retailers and hospitality businesses together in a modern two-storey building. The council describes the venue as home to more than 50 independent traders. Alongside the main shopping area, the wider market complex includes Cookhouse at Warrington, a food and drink destination with international cuisine and independent bars.
This elevated viewpoint shows the scale and layout of the trading floor, including the geometric stall roofs, broad walkways, mezzanine edges and exposed white roof trusses. Natural light enters through the extensive glazing at the far end of the building, where parts of the surrounding Time Square development can be seen. The mix of traditional market trading and contemporary architecture illustrates how established town-centre retail has been incorporated into a major civic and leisure redevelopment.
The image is relevant to editorial themes including independent business, high-street regeneration, local food shopping, indoor markets, town-centre investment and changing retail patterns. It also records everyday public use of a key Warrington destination, combining commerce, social activity, hospitality and community life within a modern Cheshire market hall

Born: November 6, 1948
Died: September 17, 2018
DEREK Watson, who has died aged 69 following a short illness, was a man of many parts and arts. Those who knew the Edinburgh-born renaissance man as an actor performing under the name Derwent Watson at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow may not have been aware that Watson began his relationship with the Citz as a musical director on Christmas shows, becoming forever known thereafter as Uncle Derek.
Similarly, the youngsters watching Uncle Derek will not have known of Watson's passion for Wagner and other composers he was an authority on, penning several biographies on them, and slipping little classical passages into his compositions for the Citz's festive fare un-noticed. Nor might those who heard Watson give lectures on Wagner and others be aware of his long-standing role as proprietor of a bookshop in West Linton where he lived for more than 20 years, with both he and the shop immortalised in a novel by Alexander McCall Smith.
In 1994, having been a resident in West Linton for a decade, he opened Linton Books. Once he had retired from the theatre, the shop provided him with an alternative stage, ˜playing' the proprietor of the shop to entertain customers. Book signings by authors included Alexander McCall Smith, whose second novel in the Sunday Philosophy Club series, Friends, Lovers, Chocolate, published in 2005, found the book's heroine Isabel Dalhousie visiting Derek in his capacity as bookseller. The shop itself featured during the unravelling of the story's mystery.
Being immortalised in such a way was the perfect compliment to Watson, who retained a curiosity for the finer things in life that went beyond his considerable intellect to draw out the fun beneath.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEJY - Afflecks (formerly Affleck's Palace) is an indoor market in Manchester, England, in the city's Northern Quarter on the junction of Church Street/Tib Street and Dale Street with Oldham Street. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once home to Affleck & Brown, one of the city's principal department stores. A bar on the original site opened in 2015, under the Affleck & Brown name.
Affleck & Brown was started in the 1860s as a drapery business in Oldham Street. The store grew to occupy a whole block between Oldham Street, Church Street and Tib Street and become a full flung department store. The business had a good reputation as a credit draper and was known for a good range of cloth for home dressmaking as well as a furrier.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1982 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long-term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period, when local bands such as the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity, Affleck's Palace was a fashionable place to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98MF - The Portico Library, The Portico or Portico Library and Gallery on Mosley Street, Manchester, is an independent subscription library designed in the Greek Revival style by Thomas Harrison of Chester and built between 1802 and 1806. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II* listed building, having been designated on 25 February 1952, and has been described as the most refined little building in Manchester.
The library was established as a result of a meeting of Manchester businessmen in 1802 which resolved to found an institute uniting the advantages of a newsroom and a library. A visit by four of the men to the Athenaeum in Liverpool inspired them to achieve a similar institution in Manchester. Money was raised through 400 subscriptions from Manchester men and the library opened in 1806.
The library, mainly focused on 19th-century literature, was designed by Thomas Harrison, architect of Liverpool's Lyceum and built by one of the founders, David Bellhouse. Its first secretary, Peter Mark Roget, began his thesaurus here.
Today the ground floor is tenanted by The Bank, a public house that takes its name from the Bank of Athens that leased the property in 1921. The library occupies what became the first floor with its entrance on Charlotte Street.
The library, Harrison's only surviving building, was the first Greek Revival building in the city. Its interior was inspired by John Soane.[1] The library has a rectangular plan and is constructed in sandstone ashlar on a corner site at 57 Mosley Street. It has two storeys and a basement and roof space. Its facade on Mosley Street has a three-bay pedimented loggia with four Ionic columns set slightly forward and steps between the columns. Under the loggia are two entrance doors and three square windows at first floor level.
The Charlotte Street facade has an entrance into the loggia with a square window above and another on the first floor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KEYN - Bawtry is a small market town and civil parish which lies where the western branch of the Roman Ermine Street crosses the River Idle in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, close to the county's border with Nottinghamshire, and meets the old course of the Great North Road. Nearby towns include Gainsborough to the east, Retford to the south south-east, Worksop to the south-west and Doncaster to the north-west. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it had a population of 3,204 in the UK census of 2001, increasing to 3,573 at the 2011 Census
Bawtry is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The present A638 was for centuries the Great North Road, and in the 20th century the town was a notorious bottleneck, until it was bypassed in 1965. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southernmost house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.
The town's former prosperity was based on its communications, the River Idle in the days when it was a port, the Great North Road in the coaching era, and the Great Northern Railway.
Bawtry's geographical location is 53° 25' 40 North, 1° 1' West, at an elevation of around 65 feet (20 m) above sea level.
The town is located just south of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly RAF Finningley. Bawtry Hall was home to RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command during and after the Second World War, and became the Headquarters of RAF Strike Command (see RAF Bawtry). From 1989 to 2013 Bawtry Hall operated as a Christian conference centre and a base for several Christian organisations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ETRXNC - Jenners Department Store, now known simply as Jenners, is a department store located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was the oldest independent department store in Scotland until its acquisition by House of Fraser in 2005
Jenners has maintained its position on Edinburgh's Princes Street since 1838 when it was founded by Charles Jenner and Charles Kennington and known as Kennington & Jenner. The store was run for many years by the Douglas-Miller family, who were descendants of James Kennedy, who took charge of Jenners in 1881.
The original buildings that formed the department store were destroyed by fire in 1892, and in 1893 the Scottish architect William Hamilton Beattie was appointed to design the new store which subsequently opened in 1895.[2] This new building is designated as a category A listed building,[3] and it is noted by the statutory listing that, at Charles Jenner's insistence, the building's caryatids were intended 'to show symbolically that women are the support of the house'. The new store included many technical innovations such as electric lighting and hydraulic lifts.
Known as the Harrods of the North, it has held a Royal Warrant since 1911, and was visited by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 1988.
In 2004 it changed its vision statement from its goal to be the most exciting department store outside of London to Confidently Independent. The store made national news in 2007 when it publicised that it would stop selling pate de foie gras, following a boycott by the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton

The record carries the catalogue number Stiff BUY 1A, marking it as the first official release on the Stiff Records label.
Stiff Records played a pivotal role in the development of British punk, new wave, and pub rock, launching or supporting artists including Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, The Damned, and Wreckless Eric. So It Goes is widely regarded as a foundational release of the UK punk era, blending raw energy with pop songwriting.
The distinctive blue-and-black label design and promotional slogans reflect Stiff Records' irreverent branding and DIY ethos. The image is suitable for editorial use covering music history, punk culture, record collecting, independent labels, and 1970s British popular music.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJ8H - The Mound is an artificial hill in central Edinburgh, Scotland, which connects Edinburgh's New Town and Old Town. It was formed by dumping around 1,501,000 cartloads of earth excavated from the foundations of the New Town into the drained Nor Loch which forms today's Princes Street Gardens.
The construction of the Earthen Mound, as it was originally called, was begun in 1781 and it was extended over the years until by 1830 it was macadamised and landscaped so that it appeared more or less complete. When the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway was extended to Waverley in 1846, tunnels were driven under The Mound to allow access to the west. The Bank of Scotland headquarters on the Mound
Some of Edinburgh's most notable buildings and institutions have their premises on The Mound, including the National Gallery of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy, the spires of New College, the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, the elegant domed Headquarters of the Bank of Scotland, and its museum, Museum on the Mound.
Today The Mound is a busy, if fairly steep, thoroughfare taking traffic to and from Princes Street and the Royal Mile in the Old Town. Due to its raised elevation, the Mound commands expansive views over Princes Street and the New Town of Edinburgh and towards Calton Hill.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3884 - Former Scotsman Newspaper offices now a luxury hotel in the heart of Edinburgh
In the 1900's the North Bridge running between the New and Old Town's of Edinburgh was widened and as part of this expansion a 190 foot high tower was built, into which the Scotsman Newspaper moved their offices.
The building cost around £500,000 and after the rest of the North Bridge extension was completed teamed with the Carlton directly opposite, it formed a imposing entrance to the Old Town.
The direct access from Market Street to the building was an ideal distribution outlet for the papers to be packed directly onto the trains at Waverley Station straight from the printing house that took up the entire basement. Across the middle floors of the building which is now home to some of the Scotsman's most luxurious rooms and suites were originally used for the editorial offices. What is today a stunning 2 floor Penthouse suite complete with its own Sauna used to be the Pigeon lofts where the news was sent far and wide across Scotland.
The Scotsman Newspaper was regarded as radical when it was first published but over the years it became Scotland's National Newspaper. It first opened its doors to the locals of Edinburgh for advertising in 1831 and what is today the North Bridge Brasserie was the original reception and trading rooms. With its stunning marble pillars and ornate balcony this room has witnessed much bartering and haggling over advertising costs. Today this stunningly majestic room is home to the Scotsman's Brasserie and bar offering a truly Scottish menu, imaginative cocktails and one of Edinburgh's largest collections of rare whiskeys.
In 2001 the Newspaper moved to their own purpose built offices in Holyrood whilst the stunning building was renovated into The Scotsman Hotel. Now with 56 rooms and 12 suites the hotel retained its originality and quirky features and this, along with the 5 star service we endeavor to deliver offers visitors a unique experience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED1RF - There have been several town walls around Edinburgh, Scotland, since the 12th century. Some form of wall probably existed from the foundation of the royal burgh in around 1125, though the first building is recorded in the mid-15th century, when the King's Wall was constructed. In the 16th century the more extensive Flodden Wall was erected, following the Scots' defeat at the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. This was extended by the Telfer Wall in the early 17th century. The walls had a number of gates, known as ports, the most important being the Netherbow Port, which stood halfway down the Royal Mile. This gave access from the Canongate which was, at that time, a separate burgh.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED4A2 - Green plush Loch Ness Monster souvenir displayed among similar toys in an Edinburgh gift shop, Scotland. The friendly character has a cream snout and stomach, large cartoon eyes, an embroidered smile and dangling legs. It wears a red Royal Stewart-style tartan bonnet and matching kilt, with a black imitation sporran. A heart motif and the word Nessie are embroidered on its chest, presenting the legendary creature as a humorous Scottish keepsake.
The close view concentrates on one toy seated at the front of a crowded retail shelf. Other green Nessie figures overlap in the background, while product tags and a shelf-edge price of £5.00 reveal the commercial setting. Bright colours, soft fabric, checked clothing and an approachable expression turn a mysterious folklore figure into a child-friendly mascot and inexpensive visitor gift.
Nessie is the popular name given to the legendary creature said to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, southwest of Inverness. Descriptions commonly portray the monster as long-bodied, sometimes green, with humps and a snake-like head. Stories of a mysterious creature in the area reach back more than 1,500 years, while modern international interest grew rapidly after reported sightings during the 1930s. No conclusive scientific evidence has established that such a monster exists, but the legend remains one of Scotland's most recognisable pieces of folklore.
Nessie imagery appears on toys, clothing, postcards and other tourist merchandise sold throughout Scotland, including Edinburgh. This product combines the monster legend with familiar visual shorthand for Scottish identity: tartan fabric, a traditional bonnet, kilt and sporran. The playful souvenir is aimed at families, international visitors, collectors and shoppers seeking a recognisable reminder of a Scottish holiday. The photograph also records destination branding, mass-market giftware and the commercial use of national mythology in tourism retail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYMCM - A green neon Havana sign glows in the window of a cigar shop in stock-photo/gotonysmith-Chester.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Chester, creating a strong night-time or low-light retail image associated with specialist tobacconists, premium cigars and the long cultural pull of Cuban cigar branding. The photograph shows bright green illuminated lettering reflected in glass, with darker shop interior detail and faint street reflections, giving the scene a moody documentary quality suitable for editorial use about traditional retail, luxury goods, cigar culture, smoking, tobacco regulation, independent shops, heritage high streets and changing consumer habits. The visible word Havana links the display with Cuba, Cuban cigars, hand-rolled tobacco, humidors, cigar lounges, cigar accessories and the wider prestige market around imported and New World cigars. In Chester, Watergate Street is known for historic buildings, specialist shops and visitor retail, and the city has a long-established tobacconist presence through Turmeaus and La Casa del Habano, both associated with cigars and tobacco sales. The image can illustrate stories about specialist cigar merchants, luxury retail, niche consumer products, British tobacconists, high street survival, Chester shopping, tourism, night-time shop windows, neon signs and the enduring visual language of old-fashioned retail display. It also has relevance for public health and policy coverage, including smoking restrictions, tobacco duty, plain packaging, age-restricted goods, premium tobacco consumption, cigar enthusiasts and the tension between heritage retail and health campaigns. The strong green neon colour, handwritten-style lettering, glass reflections and close crop make this a useful stock image for articles about Cuban branding, cigar imports, smoking culture, shopfront design, illuminated signage, independent retail identity and the more atmospheric side of historic city-centre shopping streets in North West England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AWB - Pie and mash is a traditional working-class food, originating in the East End of London. Pie, mash and eel shops have been in London since the 19th century, and are still common in East and South London and in many parts of Kent and Essex. The shops may serve stewed or jellied eels.
During the Victorian era, industrial air pollution tended to be worse in the east and south east of London because of the prevailing westerly wind, with the result that the East End was settled more by the working classes, while the western part of the city was home to higher social classes. The working class were poor and favoured foodstuffs that were cheap, in plentiful supply and easy to prepare.
The savoury pie had long been a traditional food, and its small handsized form also made it a transportable meal, protected from dirt by its cold pastry crust, and filled with cheap minced meat, usually mutton. Adding cheap mashed potatoes, together with a sauce made with fish stock and parsley, made it a plate-based sit-down meal.
Jellied eels are often associated with pie and mash, as European eels cooked in gelatine also became a common worker's meal since eels were one of the few forms of fish that could survive in the heavily polluted River Thames and London's other rivers at that time. Supply was plentiful through the late 1800s, particularly from the Dutch fishing boats landing catches at Billingsgate Fish Market.
Since 2010, as revealed in a joint study by the Zoological Society of London and the Environment Agency, the number of eels captured in research traps in the River Thames fell from 1,500 in 2005 to 50 in 2010, meaning most eels used in pie and mash shops are now from the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG3PMF - Customers drink, dine and socialise during a busy evening inside the Marble Arch Inn at 73 Rochdale Road, Manchester, one of the city's best-known historic public houses. Warm artificial light from hanging chandeliers illuminates the long room, while deep red curtains frame the tall windows and groups of patrons occupy tables on both sides of the narrow interior. The scene conveys the lively, relaxed character of a traditional Manchester boozer, with real ale drinkers talking over pints in a convivial setting at dusk.
The elaborate interior is a defining feature of the Grade II listed building. Glazed brick walls, a richly decorated ceramic frieze and the distinctive barrel-vaulted tiled ceiling create an unusually ornate drinking space. Decorative brackets, patterned surfaces, framed pictures, timber fittings and upholstered seating add to the preserved Victorian character. The pub is also renowned for its sloping mosaic floor, which descends towards the bar and forms part of the building's celebrated historic fabric.
Constructed in 1888 to designs by Manchester architects Darbyshire and Smith, the premises originally served as a show-house associated with McKenna's Brewery. The building was formally listed in 1988 in recognition of its architectural and historic interest. Its surviving tiled scheme is regarded as an important example of late nineteenth-century public-house design and helps make the venue a destination for architectural enthusiasts, real ale drinkers and visitors exploring Manchester's pub heritage.
The Marble Arch later became closely associated with Marble Brewery, founded at the rear of the premises in 1997. Brewing subsequently moved to larger facilities in Salford, although the Rochdale Road pub remains the spiritual home and flagship venue for Marble beers. The photograph documents a busy evening within a much-loved independent establishment where preserved Victorian craftsmanship, craft brewing culture, food and everyday Mancunian social

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307AH - Altrincham Market is shown busy with shoppers, flower stalls and independent traders in the regenerated market quarter of Altrincham, Trafford, Greater Manchester. The image shows the open market area beside the timber-framed covered structure, with potted plants, bouquets, gazebos, luggage and retail stalls set out across the paved public space. People browse and chat in a relaxed town-centre setting under a cloudy early-season sky, giving the photograph a strong everyday documentary feel. Altrincham has long market-town roots, with its market charter dating back to 1290, but the modern revival of the Market House and surrounding streets has made it a widely cited example of successful high-street regeneration in North West England. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of retail revival, town centre renewal, local authority regeneration, independent food halls, markets, small businesses, place-making, public realm investment, hospitality-led footfall and the reinvention of traditional shopping streets. It also works for comparisons with destination food markets such as Borough Market in Southwark, while retaining a distinct Greater Manchester character: smaller scale, suburban, mixed retail and strongly linked to local community life. The timber canopy, brick buildings, white tents and outdoor flower displays show a market environment that blends heritage, leisure, food, drink, shopping and social activity rather than relying only on conventional chain retail. Altrincham Market has been associated with the town's wider comeback, drawing visitors, raising footfall and supporting cafés, bars, restaurants and specialist traders. This photograph can illustrate debates about changing town centres, the decline of old retail models, the value of markets as anchors, council regeneration, independent enterprise, sustainable local shopping, visitor economy, Trafford prosperity and the appeal of public spaces where people can shop, eat, meet and linger.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5A - The City Arms stands illuminated during the early evening on Kennedy Street in Manchester city centre, with two customers drinking beside a barrel table outside the traditional public house. Bright lamps light the green and gold fascia above the dark-painted frontage, while warm interior light is visible through the multi-paned windows. Hanging flower baskets, polished entrance doors, pint glasses and the compact pavement setting contribute to the appearance of a well-used local pub as daylight fades.
Located at 46-48 Kennedy Street, close to Albert Square, Manchester Town Hall and the city's historic municipal quarter, The City Arms is widely known for its emphasis on well-kept cask beer. Its comparatively modest frontage and narrow interior contrast with the larger civic and commercial buildings surrounding it. The pub has retained the intimate atmosphere of a traditional city-centre boozer rather than adopting the appearance of a modern chain bar or large entertainment venue.
The premises contain a compact two-room layout with surviving historic features and are included by CAMRA among pubs with interiors of recognised heritage interest. The bar is particularly associated with a frequently changing selection of hand-pulled real ales, alongside cider, whisky and gin. It has appeared regularly in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide and remains a popular destination for local drinkers, visiting beer enthusiasts and people seeking a traditional Manchester pub experience.
Central Manchester CAMRA named The City Arms its Pub of the Year for both 2024 and 2025, reflecting the venue's continuing reputation for cask ale quality and traditional hospitality. Its location near Manchester's civic heart has also made it a long-standing meeting place for office workers, councillors, visitors and city-centre regulars.
The photograph records the pub at dusk, when exterior lighting, illuminated signage and the glow from inside become prominent against the pale upper storeys of the building

Our Short Story Prize was launched in 2019. Our aim is to celebrate short stories, to give new writers the chance to be published, and to offer some financial assistance to write. Each year we publish an anthology of the twelve longlisted stories. We're on the lookout for new, exciting, and diverse voices
Brick Lane Bookshop was originally part of The Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP), which was formed in the 1970s out of a protest.
In 1974, Thames Television launched the ˜Eyesights' scheme. With money channelled through the Great London Arts Association, the idea was that professional artists would be commissioned to create giant posters for display in the borough “ with over half the amount being earmarked for the hire of hoardings alone.
The ˜Eyesights' scheme was inevitably renamed ˜Eyesore' by local people already involved in arts and community activities who thought that the money could be put to much better use. A crowded public meeting in February 1975 called for an alternative, bolder plan, bringing together existing and fledgling arts activities under a coordinating body to be called the Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP).
Rather than it being about artists coming into the area, it should be about those already here! And after some initial eye-rolling, Thames Television eventually saw the sense of the argument. The Borough Council assisted by appointing an Arts Officer, Phil Shepherd, to support the new scheme. THAP was launched at the start of 1976 and celebrated its achievements a year later with a month-long ˜Big Show' at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Critics were bemused at finding this international venue, which had presented the works of Picasso and Frida Kahlo, awash with East End poets, Stepney filmmakers, amateur rock bands, truanting schoolkids, improvised theatre shows and messy experiments in silkscreen printing.
