Archaeological work carried out in advance of the construction of a new church hall in 2004 found the remains of the front of Balmerino House. That house was built in 1631 by John Stewart, Earl of Carrick, and sold to Lord Balmerino in 1643. It remained in the Balmerio family until 1746 when the fifth Lord Balmerino died and then the Sixth Lord was executed for his part in the failed Jacobite rebellion. The house then changed hands several time until the Church purchased it in 1848. St Mary's Star of the Sea was built in 1853 and Balmerino House was finally demolished in the 1970s. There is some conflict over the date it was built - the church website says it was designed in 1854 but the historical records in Canmore state that it was opened in 1854
From 2017 the many parishes in Edinburgh have been organised into clusters to better coordinate their resources. St. Mary's is one of four parishes in Cluster 5 along with Holy Cross, St. Margaret Mary's and St. Margaret (DM).
The parish is part of the Oblate Centre of Mission Edinburgh which also includes St John Olgilvie's Church in Wester Hailes and the priests of both parishes.

The Court of the Lord Lyon, the heraldic authority for Scotland, has been responsible for the historic crest since 1920.
However, Leith councillor Rob Munn revealed that Leith will once again be allowed to use the coat of arms freely in three months' time.
Councillor Munn, Deputy Lord Provost, said: When Leith amalgamated with Edinburgh, the coat of arms fell out of use and was in the care of the Lord Lyon's office. Previously the Borough Council had it. Over the past decade or so there's been discussions about getting it back.
The crest of the flag features representations of Mary and Jesus in a sailing ship, under the legend Sigillum Oppidi De Leith , which translates as the seal of the town of Leith , and above the phrase Persevere , and is believed to have been brought to the community by 11th-century French traders.
The crest can still be seen on some lampposts, and on several old buildings in Leith.
The Court of the Lord Lyon is understood to have heraldic artists currently designing a slightly different version of the flag for the handover.
Its official title will be The Arms of Leith Neighbourhood Partnership and it will be based on the Arms of the former Leith Borough Council.

Statue of John Hunter, Tower Place, Leith
Governor of New South Wales (Australia) between 1795 and 1800. He was born in Leith (City of Edinburgh) the son of a ship-master. He was second-in-command on HMS Sirius to Arthur Phillip who founded the colony of New South Wales in 1788. Hunter is said to have governed the colony with sense, duty and humanity, but he was not liked by the Duke of Portland, who was Secretary of State, and issued an order recalling him to England in 1799. His conduct was later vindicated and he was awarded a generous pension. He was briefly given command of the warship Venerable, but after this ship was wrecked he finished his career at a desk. In 1807, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and, three years later, to Vice-Admiral.
He died in London, where he lies buried in Hackney Old Cemetery.

It all started when it was realised that Victoria Primary School in Newhaven on the northern outskirts of Edinburgh needed to expand and the decision was taken to build a new school.
Now we're almost three years down the line and the dream of converting the site containing the Victorian building into a brand new intergenerational centre for the whole community to enjoy, is nearing completion.
We've consulted with the community to find out what they want.
We've set up a SCIO, The Heart of Newhaven Community SCIO SCO49919 a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. Constitution is here.
We have a board of trustees. We have members who will take the decisions moving into the future. See your board and consultants here.
We've passed the Community Asset Transfer test with Edinburgh City Council and been given permission to purchase the site. The Scottish Land fund have given us the Funds to buy the building.
NEWHAVEN IS A COMMUNITY WITH A HEART
Pulsating with energy is Victoria Primary School, full of children who in 2022 moved across Lindsay Road to a new site to pursue dreams for the future.
This iconic building and its annexe deserve be an asset for the whole community of Newhaven “young and old, long-time residents and those newly moved here: everybody who wants to have a place to enjoy activities that can't yet find a space in Newhaven.
Newhaven has a distinct identity.
Its rapidly increasing population and range of activities is crying out for a focal point to express our sense of community life, especially to help those in greatest need of care and well-being.
The Heart of Newhaven was chosen as a name for the proposed centre, and the campaign to keep this building for the community, because:
it is in the centre of 'Greater Newhaven' (old and new combined)
because a community space for everyone is what keeps the community heart in Newhaven for the future.

Construction
HMY Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire. She was launched by Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953, and commissioned on 11 January 1954. The ship was designed with three masts: a 133-foot (41 m) foremast, a 139-foot (42 m) mainmast, and a 118-foot (36 m) mizzenmast. The top aerial on the foremast and the top 20 feet (6.1 m) of the mainmast were hinged to allow the ship to pass under bridges.
Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this capability was never used. In the event of nuclear war, it was intended for the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to take refuge aboard Britannia off the north-west coast of Scotland

With a projected 25,000 visitors expected in its first year, the distillery is due to open in summer 2023 at the site of an old biscuit factory.
The installation of the two hand-crafted copper stills (a 7,000 litre wash still and a 5,000 litre spirit still) from The Speyside Copper Works in Elgin is the latest milestone for the £12m nine-storey distillery, which will offer tours and tastings, as well as a top floor mezzanine bar with panoramic views of Leith and wider Edinburgh. Owners say the attraction is creating up to 50 long term local jobs, with the capacity to produce one million bottles of whisky a year, through its energy-saving gravitational distilling system.

Port of Leith Distillery is the latest long term investment in Leith by co-owners and lifelong friends Ian Stirling and Paddy Fletcher, following the opening of the new Lind & Lime Gin Distillery in May 2022, a brand they launched in 2018 from an industrial unit.

The number of active car club members has almost doubled in the last year, with the number of people joining schemes hitting 450,231 in 2021. 784,122 UK residents now signed up. According to national transport charity Collaborative Mobility UK (CoMoUK), an estimated 20 private cars have been replaced by every car club vehicle, with total available stock across all schemes now surpassing 5,800.
This equates to around 116,000 cars being taken off British roads as people sell their own and engage with vehicle sharing, and use public transport more frequently where possible. The ability to save money through these initiatives is also thought to have encouraged uptake, with 73% of respondents to a recent CoMoUK car club member survey agreeing their overall costs had reduced, with 27% of members saying finances were a key reason for joining. Given the cost of living crisis, more people are now expected to sign up in a bid to reduce outgoings.
Car clubs can also have a high environmental impact as a result of the models available. On average, vehicles available through these schemes are 27% less polluting than the average car on Britain's roads, and 12% are fully electric compared to 1% of privately owned cars. Experts point to transport as the biggest single source of emissions in the UK, citing clear potential of having more people switch over to active car clubs, especially as electric vehicles begin to account for greater percentages of stock.
˜Car clubs replace privately-owned cars with fewer and more efficient vehicles, which are easy and affordable to access 24/7 while boosting use of public transport and walking and cycling. Motorists can save thousands of pounds a year by not owning a car.

Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.
