Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3FXKXRE - . A railway-side industrial complex in the Bank Quay district of Warrington, Cheshire, occupies the middle ground behind fencing and electrified railway infrastructure. The largest factory structure is a tall rectangular building clad in horizontal bands of pale blue-green material. A group of vertical metal silos stands to its right, accompanied by smaller cylinders, elevated service pipes and plant equipment at roof level. Along the railway boundary, a steel overhead-line gantry and catenary wiring pass in front of the industrial buildings, with vertical support posts and fencing marking the separation between the railway and the works. Daylight picks out the metallic surfaces of the cylindrical vessels against a clear blue sky. Warrington's Bank Quay area is part of a long-established industrial corridor associated with manufacturing, chemical processing and the transport of materials by rail. The district has historic links with Joseph Crosfield's soap and chemical business, which later became associated with Lever Brothers and the wider development of household soap and detergent manufacturing. Those connections form part of the industrial history of Warrington and its riverside workplaces. In this contemporary view, the emphasis falls on a large enclosed processing structure, storage vessels and the proximity of the site to main-line railway electrification. The composition records the relationship between the surviving industrial landscape and the railway corridor that runs through Bank Quay, with the differing shapes of clad buildings, cylindrical plant and lattice gantries clearly visible.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K2PPCC - Of a type generically known as Weaver packet, CUDDINGTON was built of steel in 1948 by W. J. Yarwood & Sons, Northwich, Cheshire, for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). She was named after a village near Northwich and carried chemicals, such as soda ash, from the ICI works at Winnington, near Northwich, down the rivers Weaver and Mersey to Liverpool. She carried on working until the 1970s and, in 1979, went to the Boat Museum, Ellesmere Port, where she is still on display. Source: Paul Brown, Historic Ships The Survivors (Amberley, 2010),

The site produces Hydrogen Peroxide in a variety of grades for use in a wide variety of applications including pulp and paper bleaching, disinfection, environmental treatment, chemical synthesis and aquaculture. Paramove®, a special grade of hydrogen peroxide used in the fish farming industry, is produced by a GMP manufacturing facility at Warrington.
The site was first established in 1948 and became fully owned by Solvay in 1992.
Community information
Solvay Warrington works closely with local schools and colleges to promote the benefits which science brings to our communities. We host school visits to our factory, sponsor a local High School to manufacture trophies for the Chemical Industries Association Awards ceremony and support an annual science conference at Priestley College.
Solvay encourage our employees to participate in community and charitable activities and provide financial support when appropriate.
Advice to the public
Solvay's Warrington site is an upper tier COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 2006) site. In line with the COMAH regulations, we submit a Safety Report to the Health and Safety Executive every five years. The report assesses the hazards and risks associated with our operations and details the controls we employ in order to reduce the risks to As Low as is Reasonably Practicable .
In the unlikely event of a major chemical incident, we will sound our COMAH alarm to alert the local community. If you hear the alarm (a two-tone siren), immediately go inside, close all doors and windows and tune in to a local radio station.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MGMJWH - . An identifiable period record of the recorded location in 2018, retaining the practical detail and local context that distinguish a documentary photograph from a generic illustration. At the centre of the view is Unilever Persil plant at Warrington Bank Quay. The image also relates to historic streetscape, conservation interest, public realm, period detail, regional identity, heritage landmark, contemporary social history, everyday life, local history, urban fabric, adaptive reuse, period building, historic townscape, and cityscape history. Today's relevance is strengthened by maintenance, tourism and the continuing question of the balance between conservation, retrofit and modern accessibility. The image fixes street furniture and boundaries within the recorded location at one identifiable point, providing a benchmark against changing commercial priorities. Further associations within the scene are changing streetscape, local character, period architecture, conservation architecture, visual archive, before-and-after reference, historical comparison, and place identity. The combination of Unilever, plant, and Persil anchors the frame to a recognisable activity, place or moment. Image MGMJWH still provides a clear period benchmark for Unilever Persil plant at Warrington Bank Quay, preserving details of design, wording, material, use or presentation that may later change. The scene further reflects maintenance and how historic buildings acquire new uses as cities change as part of the longer story of the recorded location. Its period value extends to redevelopment pressure and the balance between conservation, retrofit and modern accessibility when considered against later change at the recorded location. The location additionally provides evidence of planning control and keeping older buildings useful without erasing their distinctive character without losing the local specificity of the recorded location.
