It has a cobbled square, St Wilfs at its centre and the Parr Arms Pub.
St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873?74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 1873?74 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about ?4,000

The gates were made for the International Exhibition of 1862, and then intended for Queen Victoria's Sandringham home in Norfolk. The Queen was meant to see them for the first time at the exhibition but, clearly visible through the gates, was a statue of Oliver Cromwell.
As Cromwell had signed King Charles I's death warrant, royalty didn't like him very much. The Queen's courtiers realised she wouldn't be amused to see the statue, and diverted her.
Coalbrookdale found it hard to find a buyer for such grand gates, so Monks was able to buy and bring them to Warrington to stand at the front of the town hall lawn. Monks also presented the cast iron Cromwell statue, designed by John Bell, to Warrington in 1899. It now stands on Bridge Street and is Grade II Listed.
The design
Because the owner was supposed to be Queen Victoria, the gates have four winged figures of Nike, the goddess of victory. They also had a Prince of Wales motif above the arch in the middle, but this was changed to Warrington's Coat of Arms.
The grand opening
Such grand gates needed a grand opening. So on Warrington Walking Day, 28 June 1895, Monks ceremoniously opened the gates with a golden key and the church groups set off from the town hall lawn, through the gates and on to their walk.
The iconic golden gates are Grade II* Listed, along with the gate piers and the lamps which line the driveways at either side of the town hall. They are also part of the Town Hall Conservation Area. The gates have recently been refurbished to repair, enhance and preserve them for future generations

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFNE - Warrington Town Hall, on the north side of Sankey Street, was designed and built in 1750 by James Gibbs as an elegant Georgian mansion, known as Bank Hall. It was a home for local merchant Thomas Patten and his family.
As more traffic started to use Sankey Street, the Patten family built a high brick wall in front of the building to give them privacy. But when the council bought Bank Hall in 1870 and turned it into Warrington's new town hall, local people started to complain that they were paying rates which helped to look after the building ? but they couldn't even see it!
So Frederick Monks, one of the town's earliest councillors, came up with an idea. As a local ironmaster, he could give the town hall a fitting entrance.

Howard Ben Tre died earlier this summer, aged 71.
Described as a 'larger than life character' he was famed in the art world for his large-scale glass sculptures.
But his work in Warrington was rather different.
Howard and first wife Gay won a contest to create public art on Bridge Street and Market Gate after the devastating bombing of 1993. The work was finished in 1999.
The couple spent two years overseeing the town centre's transformation, replacing the main thoroughfare with trees, fountains, seating and sculpture that connected the shops.
Growing up in New York, he lived in Rhode Island where he has a studio.
Howard and Gay, both active in protesting the Vietnam War, married when they were 21.
We had a very adventurous life together, Gay Ben Tr?? said. He once told her: Without me, we wouldn't have had as many adventures
without you, we wouldn't have survived.
His second wife Wendy MacGaw told the Providence Journal he was a 'force of nature'.
Howard returned to Warrington in 2009, ten years after the skittles and fountains had first been revealed.
Cllr Mike Hannon, who came up with the idea for the artwork, said it had helped to transform Warrington.
He added: Howard was actually talking about Warrington at an event in York and he got to see it with the trees matured.
It was controversial at the time but if I was asked would I do it again, I would say definitely yes.
I believe in the rationale behind it and experts say we would not have had the investment in the Golden Square with all the money and jobs that brought without the public artworks.

In 1830 the building became a licensed public house, known as the Vintners Arms, and later the Kenyon Vaults. By 1865, the ground floor of the building was known as the Wellington Inn, while the upper floors were used by makers of mathematical and optical instruments. Later, in 1897, the upper floors were used as a fishing tackle shop, known as Ye Olde Fyshing Tackle Shoppe.
In the 1970s the Old Shambles was underpinned with a concrete raft and raised by 1.4 metres (55 in) designed by draughtsman Fred Kennedy, to fit in with the development of the Arndale Centre
the Inn was reopened in 1981. It was damaged in the 1996 Manchester bombing, and was reopened in February 1997, with costs of ?500,000 paid to repair the damage. However, in preparation for the city's development in the bomb's aftermath, it was decided that the building, alongside its neighbour Sinclair's Oyster Bar, should be dismantled and rebuilt 300 metres (980 ft) towards the cathedral to form Shambles Square. The move was completed by November 1999, when the pub reopened

By 1880, their nephew Charles Thomas Whitley, an architect and good university friend of Charles Darwin, was a frequent visitor of the property and an inscription by him relating to Darwin, can still be seen on one of the original oak beams in the bar.
More recently, the building was converted into a public house named The Hollow Tree before the latest chapter in the building's history saw it being transformed into a traditional inn, and renamed The Partridge, after its countryside surroundings and the birds that are regularly spotted in the local area.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3153739395 - 'Bridgwater is a large historic market town and civil parish in Somerset, England. Its population currently stands at around 35,886 as of 2011. Bridgwater is at the edge of the Somerset Levels, in level and well-wooded country. The town lies along both sides of the River Parrett, and has been a major in-land port and trading centre since the industrial revolution. Most of its industrial bases still stand today. Its larger neighbour Taunton, is linked to Bridgwater via a canal, the M5 motorway and the GWR railway line.
Historically, the town had a politically radical tendency. The Battle of Sedgemoor, where the Monmouth Rebellion was finally crushed in 1685, was fought nearby. Notable buildings include the Church of St Mary and the house in Blake Street, largely restored, which was the birthplace of Admiral Blake in 1598, and is now the Blake Museum. The town has an arts centre and plays host to the annual Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival.
The Corn Exchange and market house in Bridgwater, Somerset, England was built in 1834 by John Bowen and extended in 1875, by Charles Knowles. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building.
The original market hall, which dates from 1791, is fronted by a circular portico with a domed roof with Tuscan pillars.[2] The distinctive portico was added after the north and south sides of the corn market were demolished for road widening in 1825.
It was originally surrounded by railings to separate the livestock from the food produce. The railings were removed in 1895.
In front of the building is a statue of Robert Blake who was born in the town. The statue was made in 1898 by F. W. Pomeroy and has since been repositioned to face down Cornhill

Close to Oxford Street and Regent Street, it is home to fashion and lifestyle retailers, including a large number of independent fashion boutiques.
Streets crossing, or meeting with, Carnaby Street are, from south to north, Beak Street, Broadwick Street, Kingly Court, Ganton Street, Marlborough Court, Lowndes Court, Fouberts Place, Little Marlborough Street and Great Marlborough Street. The nearest London Underground station is Oxford Circus (on the Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines).
Carnaby Street derives its name from Karnaby House, which was built in 1683 to the east. The origin of the name is unknown. The street was probably laid out in 1685 or 1686. First appearing in the ratebooks in 1687, it was almost completely built up by 1690 with small houses. A market was developed in the 1820s. In his novel, Sybil (1845), Benjamin Disraeli refers to 'a carcase-butcher famous in Carnaby-market'.
This area is notable for a cholera outbreak in 1854 leading to an early application of fundamental epidemiological principles to resolve the crisis. John Snow, the physician who recognised the cases were concentrated near a pump on Broad Street communicated the finding on a map-based graphic. It led to the pump being locked and the reduction in cases of cholera was rapid.
In 1934, Amy Ashwood Garvey and Sam Manning opened the Florence Mills Social Club, a jazz club that became a gathering place for supporters of Pan-Africanism, at number 50.
The first boutique, His Clothes, was opened by John Stephen in 1957 after his shop in Beak Street burned down and was followed by I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet, Gear, Lady Jane, Mates, Ravel, and others. Round the corner in Kingly Street, Tommy Roberts opened his gift shop Kleptomania. He moved to Carnaby Street in 1967 and went on to make fame in the King's Road, Chelsea, with his Mr Freedom shop.
By the 1960s, Carnaby Street was popular with followers of the mod and hippie styles. Many independent fashion boutiques such as Ariella,and designers such as Mary Quant, Marion Foale and Sally Tuffin, Lord John, Merc, Take Six, and Irvine Sellars had premises in the street and various underground music bars such as the Roaring Twenties opened in the surrounding streets. Bands such as the Small Faces, The Who, and The Rolling Stones appeared in the area to work (at the legendary Marquee Club round the corner in Wardour Street), shop, and socialise, it became one of the coolest destinations associated with 1960's Swinging London.
The Carnaby Street contingent of Swinging London stormed into North American and international awareness with the 15 April 1966 publication of Time magazine's cover and article that extolled this street's role:
\u201cPerhaps nothing illustrates the new swinging London better than narrow, three-block-long Carnaby Street, which is crammed with a cluster of the 'gear' boutiques where the girls and boys buy each other clothing...\u201d
In October 1973, the Greater London Council pedestrianised the street. Vehicular access is restricted between 11 am and 8 pm. A comparison of before and after number of pedestrians entering the area indicated a 30% increase in pedestrian flows as a result of the pedestrianisation. A campaign commenced early in 2010 to call for pedestrianisation in the adjacent area of Soho.
Westminster City Council erected two green plaques, one at 1 Carnaby Street dedicated to fashion entrepreneur John Stephen, who began the Mod fashion revolution and another at 52/55 Carnaby Street is dedicated to the Mod pop group The Small Faces and their manager Don Arden.
To celebrate the memory of Freddie Mercury after the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, the Carnaby Street arch is getting a rework with Queen's logo being put up until early 2019. Despite John Stephen closing his final buisness in 1975 (he died in 2004 aged 70) and the gradual movement to novelty shops with appeal to the ever increasing tourist trade, the boutique trade founded in Carnaby street in 1957 by John Stephen is still visable through the many shops of that ilk that still exist in the street today . Although featured in many books about London, the only book published which is exclusively about 'Carnaby Street' and traces the history from the 1600s to 1970 is simply entitled 'Carnaby Street' and was written by Tom Salter in 1970. A few mainstream stores including 'Boots The Chemists' are currently in the street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3B7 - Oxford Street is a major road in the City of Westminster in the West End of London, running from Tottenham Court Road to Marble Arch via Oxford Circus. It is Europe's busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors, and as of 2012 had approximately 300 shops. It is designated as part of the A40, a major road between London and Fishguard, though it is not signed as such, and traffic is regularly restricted to buses and taxis.
The road was originally part of the Via Trinobantina, a Roman road between Essex and Hampshire via London. It was known as Tyburn Road through the Middle Ages when it was notorious for public hangings of prisoners in Newgate Prison. It became known as Oxford Road and then Oxford Street in the 18th century, and began to change from residential to commercial and retail purposes by the late 19th century, attracting street traders, confidence tricksters and prostitution. The first department stores in Britain opened in the early 20th century, including Selfridges, John Lewis and HMV. Unlike nearby shopping streets such as Bond Street, it has retained an element of downmarket trading alongside more prestigious retail stores. The street suffered heavy bombing during World War II, and several longstanding stores including John Lewis were completely destroyed and rebuilt from scratch.

It is named after George, the Prince Regent (later George IV) and was laid out under the direction of the architect John Nash and James Burton. It runs from Waterloo Place in St James's at the southern end, through Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus, to All Souls Church. From there Langham Place and Portland Place continue the route to Regent's Park.
The street's layout was completed in 1825 and was an early example of town planning in England, replacing earlier roads including Swallow Street. Nash and Burton's street layout has survived, although all the original buildings except All Souls Church have been replaced following reconstruction in the late 19th century. The street is known for its flagship retail stores, including Liberty, Hamleys, Jaeger and the Apple Store. The Royal Polytechnic Institution, now the University of Westminster, has been based on Regent Street since 1838.
Regent Street is approximately 0.8 miles (1.3 km) long and begins at a junction with Charles II Street as a continuation of Waterloo Place. It runs north to Piccadilly Circus, where it turns left before curving round the Quadrant to head north again, meeting Oxford Street at Oxford Circus. It ends at a junction with Cavendish Place and Mortimer Street near the BBC Broadcasting House, with the road ahead being Langham Place, followed by Portland Place.
The southern section of the road is one-way northbound and part of the A4, a major road through West London. From Piccadilly Circus northwards, it is numbered A4201, though in common with roads inside the London congestion charging zone, the number does not appear on signs.
Nearby tube stations are Charing Cross, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus
the lattermost being one of the busiest underground stations in London, and is where three main lines (Central, Bakerloo and Victoria) meet. Several bus routes, such as 6, 12, and 13, run along Regent Street

Helen Liddell, former Secretary of State for Scotland, called for the wine to be banned. In 2005, Scottish Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson suggested that retailers should stop selling the wine. On a subsequent visit to Auchinleck within her constituency, she was greeted by teenagers chanting, Don't ban Buckie. Jamieson then received correspondence from lawyers acting for Buckfast distributors, J. Chandler & Company, in Andover. A further consequence was that Buckfast sales increased substantially in the months following Jamieson's comments

Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Daniel Defoe, who visited Edinburgh in the 1720s, reports the place being used for two open air markets: the Grass-market and the Horse-market. Of the West Bow at the north-east corner, considerably altered in the Victorian period, he wrote, This street, which is called the Bow, is generally full of wholesale traders, and those very considerable dealers in iron, pitch, tar, oil, hemp, flax, linseed, painters' colours, dyers, drugs and woods, and such like heavy goods, and supplies country shopkeepers, as our wholesale dealers in England do. Before the creation of Victoria Street and Johnston Terrace in the early 1800s, the steep, awkward incline of the old West Bow was the only feasible passage for those wishing to access the Lawnmarket and Edinburgh Castle from the west.
The old West Bow was a precipitous, narrow Z-shaped street linking the Grassmarket with Castlehill. Its path is somewhat preserved today by the steps which cut through Victoria Street towards the Upper Bow. Prior to the 19th century it was considered to be one of the most important roads in Edinburgh, despite its reputation as one of the most difficult to negotiate if travelling by carriage.
Many of the oldest buildings in the city were contained along the old West Bow. An abundance of timber-fronted houses had sprung up over the centuries, many of them resembling upside-down pyramids due to the manner in which the floors increasingly protruded out as they progressed upwards.
As such, the distance between the top floors of some of the houses on either side of the street was so little that it is said neighbours could enjoy ?the pleasure of tea drinking, without the trouble of leaving their respective abodes'.
The old West Bow was radically transformed between 1829-34 as part of town planner Thomas Hamilton's 1827 Improvement Act which was set up to provide better approaches into the Old Town from the west and south. The eventual design featured a gentle, curved link from the Grassmarket up to the newly-created George IV Bridge. It was originally named Bow Street, remaining so until 1837 when the arrival to the British throne of Queen Victoria was suitably honoured by the city.

Its ingredients are traceable to the 13th century, when returning European crusaders brought with them Middle Eastern recipes containing meats, fruits and spices.
The early mince pie was known by several names, including mutton pie, shrid pie and Christmas pie. Typically its ingredients were a mixture of minced meat, suet, a range of fruits, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Served around Christmas, the savoury Christmas pie (as it became known) was associated with supposed Catholic idolatry and during the English Civil War was frowned on by the Puritan authorities. Nevertheless, the tradition of eating Christmas pie in December continued through to the Victorian era, although by then its recipe had become sweeter and its size reduced markedly from the large oblong shape once observed. Today the mince pie remains a popular seasonal treat enjoyed by many across the United Kingdom.

An international design competition was held for a central water feature in the square, which was won by Dhruva Mistry. Construction commenced in 1992 and was completed in 1994, when the square was officially reopened by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Mistry's fountain is the largest sculptural piece in the square. Locals tell me that a trip there was an experience as a child, maybe getting whipped up to the 1st floor for school shoes, sunday best or uniform. I have certainly taken a few shots of it over the years, its a Stornoway icon, (almost as famous as butchers Macleod & MacleodsBlack Pudding or Irn Bru Sausages).
As you walk in there is bric-a-brac downstairs with soft furnishings at the rear. Upstairs are the wearables, shoes, clothes etc. I am told that they stock some quite posh stuff too. I did spot some people sporting Tommy Hilfiger tops in The Thai Cafe, although that might have been from a stall on Inverness Market. They did have mainland accents!
An on-line review I read said iThere's a nice selection of Posh womens hats and bags (Think weddings and church) and a range of womens wear and underwear which is mostly suited to the more mature lady but sometimes you can find a great modern young person piece./i

Because Kung Fu Records itself had been formed in 1996 and was at this point still a small label, the original pressing of the album was somewhat limited and it remained relatively obscure for several years (the band's major studio albums at this time were being released by Nitro Records). The Vandals maintained a close friendship with fellow Orange County band No Doubt, who covered the album's title track 'Oi to the World' for a Christmas compilation in 1997.
Their version, which was produced by Vandals guitarist Warren Fitzgerald, received mainstream exposure and popularity and spawned a music video. Partly thanks to the exposure brought by association with No Doubt (with whom the Vandals also toured), fan interest in Oi to the World! increased and in 2000 Kung Fu Records, which by now had grown in size, re-released the album with new artwork and a bonus overture, as well as a new intro for the title track.
The Vandals are Dave Quackenbush on vox, Warren Fitzgerald on guitar, backing vocals, Joe Escalante on bass guitar, backing vocals and Josh Freese on drums.

The Dome is a bar, restaurant and conference complex and was originally the long since defunct Commercial Bank of Scotland's HQ. At Christmas the exterior on George Street and the interior are both lavishly decorated. As you enter the building there is a distinct whiff of cinnamon.

What a nice feelgood effect this track has on me, even when its minus something outside on the cobbles!
British Sea Power's Yan and Hamilton Wilkinson are brothers and were school friends with Matthew Wood in Kendal, Cumbria England. They are based in Brighton where BSP amassed a large following their own club night called 'Club Sea Power'. Its numerous support acts and occasional fashion show went down well in Brighton.
'The Decline of British Sea Power', the band's first album, was released in June 2003 to critical acclaim. Their tours often include unusual venues such as the Scillonian Club on the Isles of Scilly, Grasmere Village Hall, the St. John Boste Social Club in Kendal and Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall. They have been compared with The Cure and Joy Division.
This track is taken from 'Open Season', the second album. Well worth a listen.

Grappenhall is a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is situated along the Bridgewater Canal, and forms one of the principal settlements of Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish. According to the 2001 UK census, the population of the entire civil parish was 9,377.
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale, ('the Groping Place') which states it to be worth five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs (The Parr Arms and The Ram's Head), Grappenhall Hall residential School and St. Wilfrids Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is also found north of the centre of the village.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the Victorian cobbled centre of Grappenhall. It is also the birthplace of actor Tim Curry. Here Church lane is pictured from the west.

Wikipedia describes Valley Girl (or Val, Val Gal) 'as a stereotype leveled at a socio-economic and ethnic class of American women who can be described as colloquial English-speaking, materialistic, self-centered, hedonistic, and often sexually promiscuous. Valspeak is also a form of this trait, based on an exaggerated version of '80s California English'.
'Valley Girl' is a song by the musician Frank Zappa and his 14 year-old daughter, 'Moon Unit Zappa'. It was released on Zappa's 1982 album 'Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch'. Moon supplied Frank with much of the content speaking typical 'Valley girl' phrases. Zappa intended to lampoon the image, but the single also helped popularized the valley girl stereotype in the states.
Sadly no longer with us, over 30 years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, electronic, orchestral, and musique concr\u00e8te works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist.
Zappa was married to Kathryn J. 'Kay' Sherman from 1960 to 1964. In 1967 he married Adelaide Gail Sloatman, with whom he remained until his death from prostate cancer in 1993. They had four children: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen.
Zappa was very anti-censorship. In September 1985, Zappa testified before the United States Senate Commerce, Technology, and Transportation committee, attacking the Parents Music Resource Center or PMRC, a music organization, co-founded by Tipper Gore, former wife of then-senator Al Gore. PMRC consisted of many wives of politicians, including the wives of five members of the committee, and was founded to address the issue of song lyrics with sexual or satanic content.
He stated 'The establishment of a rating system, voluntary or otherwise, opens the door to an endless parade of moral quality control programs based on things certain Christians do not like. What if the next bunch of Washington wives demands a large yellow 'J' on all material written or performed by Jews, in order to save helpless children from exposure to concealed Zionist doctrine?'
Zappa's passion for American politics became a bigger part of his life. He had always encouraged his fans to register to vote on album covers, and throughout 1988 he had registration booths at his concerts. He even considered running for President of the United States. Now maybe that might have changed history, and saved a few lives.
Frank Zappa was truly a giant. Everyone must have at least one Zappa album, even if its the compilation, 'Strictly Commercial'. Give 'Sheik Yerbouti' and 'Joes Garage' a look too.

In the Greater Los Angeles area, the term 'Valley Girl' apparently originated and still refers to girls from the San Fernando Valley. In context it is associated with a spoiled girl from an upper-middle class background who socializes with other 'valley girls' in cliques. In regions neighboring the San Fernando Valley, people will often call a girl a 'valley girl' or tell her to 'go back to the valley' if she is showing signs of materialism and/or idiotic behavior.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer parodied the valley girl, with the main character, Buffy Summers, often saving the males of the programme. Buffy's contemporaries Cordelia and Harmony more closely fit to the conventions of the Valley girl.
The nearest thing in the UK is the classic 'Essex Girl' stereotype. Someone please ask me and I will tell them the classic cucumber/Essex girl joke (Amber - step up to the plate dear!).
In Ireland apparently D4 denotes upper middle class females associated with shopping in Dundrum Town Centre, the upmarket shopping centre adjacent to Dundrum village. Ugg boots and fake tan features, so I am told.

Jenners Department Store, now known simply as Jenners, is a department store located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was the oldest independent department store in Scotland until its acquisition by House of Fraser in 2005.
Jenners has maintained its position on Edinburgh's Princes Street since 1838 when it was founded by Charles Jenner and Charles Kennington and known as Kennington & Jenner. The store was run for many years by the Douglas-Miller family, who were descendants of James Kennedy, who took charge of Jenners in 1881.
The original buildings that formed the department store were destroyed by fire in 1892, and in 1893 the Scottish architect William Hamilton Beattie was appointed to design the new store which subsequently opened in 1895. This new building is designated as a category A listed building, and it is noted by the statutory listing that, at Charles Jenner's insistence, the building's caryatids were intended 'to show symbolically that women are the support of the house'. By area (trivia buffs and quiz night experts) its the second largest main line railway station in the United Kingdom after London Waterloo. Glasgow Central handles more passengers however.
In 1868 the North British Railway (NBR) acquired the stations of its rivals, demolished all three, and closed the Scotland Street tunnel to Canal Street. The present Victorian station was built on the site, and extended in the late 19th century. The North British Hotel (now The Balmoral) opened in 1902 as a railway hotel, and was operated as part of the station until the 1980s. Waverley has been in continual use since, under the auspices of the North British, the LNER, British Rail, Railtrack and latterly the wayward Network Rail.

Lymm Cross is in the village of Lymm, Cheshire, England. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
The cross dates from the early to the middle 17th century and it was restored in 1897. It is constructed of sandstone and stands on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone. Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials.
Above the cross is an extension which carries a stone ball and an ornate weather vane. On the east, south and west gables are bronze sundials of 1897 carrying the inscriptions We are a Shadow, Save Time and Think of the Last

Well, traditionally these are made with lime-green marzipan and chocolate dipped ends, and maybe there was an early vaccum cleaner model that looked like that..? I really don't know, and there doesn't seem to be a simple answer out there, so it'll have to remain a mystery.
And it has many names, dammsugare just happens to be most widely used one. Punschrulle is also quite common, getting it's name from the liqueur used to flavor the filling. Punsch, as I've written before, is made from arrak and very sweet. If you can't find it, try using something like Amaretto or Frangelico instead - won't be the same, but it'll be really good.
