Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T19PFD - Ask for Angela
The Met and the Mayor of London have joined together with Safer Sounds, part of the Safer Business Network, and licensed venues across the capital to help keep people safe while enjoying a night out.
The safety initiative ˜Ask for Angela' is being rolled out to bars, clubs and other licensed businesses across London and other cities. People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching venue staff and asking them for ˜Angela'. This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them. This might be through reuniting them with a friend, seeing them to a taxi, or by calling venue security and/or the police.
Venues that support ˜Ask for Angela' have been given Welfare And Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) training. Delivered by the Met's licensing officers and Safer Sounds, it gives staff the ability to help customers who may be in a situation that makes them vulnerable or unsafe.
˜Ask for Angela' was originally developed by Lincolnshire County Council and adopted by the Met in 2016 as a localised initiative by its police licensing officers. The introduction of WAVE training in 2017 underpinned the delivery of Ask for Angela and more venues began to take on the initiative.
Organisations can receive WAVE training through the Safer Sounds Partnership or via their local licensing team. The training explores what vulnerability is, how to identify it and appropriate interventions. A range of online assets and webinars are available.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFAAP8 - In electrical safety testing, portable appliance testing (PAT, PAT inspection or PAT testing) is a process in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety. The formal term for the process is in-service inspection & testing of electrical equipment. Testing involves a visual inspection of the equipment and any flexible cables for good condition, and also where required, verification of earthing (grounding) continuity, and a test of the soundness of insulation between the current carrying parts, and any exposed metal that may be touched. The formal limits for pass/fail of these electrical tests vary somewhat depending on the category of equipment being tested.
British law (the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989) requires that all electrical systems (including electrical appliances) are maintained (so far it is reasonably and practicable) to prevent danger. Private houses are not covered by this legislation, although occupiers' liability requires householders not to deliberately expose occupants or visitors to unreasonable risks. The HSE and the local authority are responsible for the policing of this legislation.
Fixed wiring in buildings
Guidance from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, published under the IEE brand) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that a competent person must inspect the installation regularly in any public building or a place that people work. They suggest initial intervals for combined inspection and testing that range from three months (for construction equipment) to one year, and in many cases, longer periods for re-testing (certain types of appliance in schools, hotels, offices and shops)
Carrying out PAT
This can be done by hiring an external company to test all the electrical products in a business (someone who has had some PAT training, either by an official qualification or by attending a health and safety course

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JK3E - Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. There are six types, all of which are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fibre being composed of many microscopic fibrils that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other processes. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to various dangerous lung conditions, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer, so it is now notorious as a serious health and safety hazard.
Archaeological studies have found evidence of asbestos being used as far back as the Stone Age to strengthen ceramic pots, but large-scale mining began at the end of the 19th century when manufacturers and builders began using asbestos for its desirable physical properties. Asbestos is an excellent electrical insulator and is highly fire-resistant, so for much of the 20th century it was very commonly used across the world as a building material, until its adverse effects on human health were more widely acknowledged in the 1970s. Many modern buildings constructed before the 1980s are thought to contain asbestos.
The use of asbestos for construction and fireproofing has been made illegal in many countries. Despite this, at least 100,000 people are thought to die each year from diseases related to asbestos exposure. In part, this is because many older buildings still contain asbestos
in addition, the consequences of exposure can take decades to arise. The most common diseases associated with chronic asbestos exposure are asbestosis (scarring of the lungs due to asbestos inhalation) and mesothelioma (a type of cancer)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7XF5B - Safestyle UK plc, part of the Style Group UK, is a provider of PVCu double glazed windows, doors, French doors, patio sliding doors, bifolding doors and conservatories in the United Kingdom.
Established on 22 December 1992 with £2,000, in 2005 the company installed more than £100 million of replacement windows and doors. Safestyle's head office is in Bradford, West Yorkshire and the company now has more than 40 branches across the United Kingdom.
In 1996 the company expanded and set up a new division, Windowstyle, which manufactures Safestyle's double glazed PVCu windows and doors in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The company has invested more than £6.5 million in Windowstyle to date, including £2.5 million worth of state-of-the-art glass toughening and processing machinery. The facility is set in an 18-acre (73,000 m2) site, employs over 600 specialist production staff, runs 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, and produces more than 5,500 frames and 13,500 double glazed sealed units per week. It is also the biggest employer in the area.
In 2005 the company was nominated in the national G Awards, which take place annually and are open to all organisations in the glass, glazing and fenestration industries. Safestyle won the G05 Award for Best Promotional Campaign of the Year, following that in 2006 with the G06 Award for Best Customer Care.
Also in 2006, Safestyle UK received Government-backed endorsement in the TrustMark scheme, a scheme also supported by the building industry and consumer groups. TrustMark-endorsed companies must have proven ability to make improvements and repairs inside and outside homes, adhering to high standards of workmanship and customer care.
In 2007, they have continued to win industry awards, winning the G07 Installer of the Year Award, and the G07 Health and Safety Initiative Award at the annual industry G Awards.
In 2013, it was announced that Safestyle UK Ltd would be floated on the Alternative Investment Market

We formed in 2012 with the original aim of transforming an area of wasteland behind Shipley Fire Station into a community food garden. Unfortunately due to due constraints over securing a lease for this site from Bradford Council, we are no longer able to pursue this project.
In 2015 we began working with Sustainable Saltaire to look after the Sunday School Garden in Caroline Street car park. In 2016 we developed two new edible growing sites: Plot at Platform 1 at Saltaire Station and the Japanese Edible Garden on Exhibition Road, supported by Shipley College. We also work with Saltaire Village Society to help look after the raised beds in the Wash House Garden on Caroline Street (edge of Edward Street and Amelia Street).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K11P0H - Manchester public art: Robert Owen on corner of Balloon Street and Corporation Street
The statue of Robert Owen, which is located on the corner of Balloon Street and Corporation Street, is a copy of a sculpture deigned by Gilbert Bayes
Robert Owen was a Welsh reformer who moved to Manchester as a teenager.
He became heavily involved in the cotton industry and, with the help of several Manchester businessmen, went on to buy a large textile factory near Glasgow.
Here he put into practice values of sound working conditions, introduced a minimum age and provided nurseries and schools.
He also opened stores where workers could buy good quality goods at little more than the wholesale cost.
These principles became the basis for the cooperative shops in Britain.
His statue, on corner of Balloon Street and Corporation Street, is a copy of the one erected in Owen's birthplace of Newtown.
It was commissioned by the Co-operative Bank as part of the 150th anniversary of the modern co-operative movement and was unveiled in 1994.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1MCM3 - Regent's Canal is a canal across an area just north of central London, England. It provides a link from the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal, 550 yards (500 m) north-west of Paddington Basin in the west, to the Limehouse Basin and the River Thames in east London. The canal is 8.6 miles (13.8 km) long
First proposed by Thomas Homer in 1802 as a link from the Paddington arm of the then Grand Junction Canal (opened in 1801) with the River Thames at Limehouse, the Regent's Canal was built during the early 19th century after an Act of Parliament was passed in 1812. Noted architect and town planner John Nash was a director of the company
in 1811 he had produced a masterplan for George IV, then Prince Regent, to redevelop a large area of central north London “ as a result, the Regent's Canal was included in the scheme, running for part of its distance along the northern edge of Regent's Park.
As with many Nash projects, the detailed design was passed to one of his assistants, in this case James Morgan, who was appointed chief engineer of the canal company. Work began on 14 October 1812. The first section from Paddington to Camden Town opened in 1816 and included a 251-metre (274 yd) long tunnel under Maida Hill east of an area now known as 'Little Venice', and a much shorter tunnel, just 48 metres (52 yd) long, under Lisson Grove. The Camden to Limehouse section, including the 886-metre (969 yd) long Islington Tunnel and the Regent's Canal Dock (used to transfer cargo from seafaring vessels to canal barges “ today known as Limehouse Basin), opened four years later on 1 August 1820. Various intermediate basins were also constructed (e.g.: Cumberland Basin to the east of Regent's Park, Battlebridge Basin (close to King's Cross, London) and City Road Basin). Many other basins such as Wenlock Basin, Kingsland Basin, St. Pancras Stone and Coal Basin, and one in front of the Great Northern Railway's Granary were also built, and some of these survive.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP7K - This image shows an artist working outdoors in St Peter's Square in Manchester, painting on an easel with Manchester Central Library visible in the background. Captured during summer, the scene reflects the use of public space for creative activity within the heart of the city.
St Peter's Square is one of Manchester's principal civic spaces, surrounded by landmark buildings including the circular, neoclassical Manchester Central Library. The square is frequently used by pedestrians, artists, performers, and visitors, functioning as a focal point for everyday urban life as well as cultural expression.
Plein air painting in city centres has become increasingly visible in recent years, with artists choosing to work directly from observation rather than from photographs or studios. Scenes such as this highlight the interaction between architecture, public space, and creative practice.
Photographed in natural summer light, the image documents contemporary urban culture in Manchester and is well suited for editorial use covering arts and creativity, city life, public spaces, tourism, and the lived experience of historic civic environments.

Its got to be the mascot up at Cheshire's top hand car wash Garnett. They are a really friendly team down there and do a cracking job. I can recommend them.
Look out for the mascot which will be around town from now and into the summer to promote the business that covers cars, valets, drives and conservatories from their base at Old Warrington road, Northwich and out at Tatton adjacent to the Little Chef on the A556. They also clean Fascias, Caravans and even done the odd Tractor believe it or not. Handy as they are insured with NFU (originally the farmers mutual).
Back in December, the local council, Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC), took offence at the companies distinctive green and yellow A-Boards. I am unsure if it was the colour or size that was the nature of the complaint. If it was that they were prominent, isn't that the point? I have still noticed plenty of A-Boards around town. To be consistant shouldn't they all be banned?
Shirley Wingfield, a spokesman for CWAC, was reported in the Northwich Guardian as saying “We do not regard what Mr Garnett was advertising on as A-boards, we regard it as fly posting. “We act when incidents are reported to us and people are asked not to do it again. If they persist they are issued with a fixed penalty notice.”
Personally I thought I thought I had a good idea what a fly posting was, but maybe not!
If you want to book yourself in with the Garnett Hand Carwash give them a bell on 07825-776617.
