Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RECE3M - The Garrard Engineering and Manufacturing Company of Swindon, Wiltshire, was a British company that was famous for producing high-quality gramophone turntables. It was formed by the jewellers Garrard & Co in 1915. The company was sold to Plessey, an electronics conglomerate, in 1960. During the period 1976-1978, Garrard developed demonstrators of the novel video disc technology. Although the team recognised the future potential of this data storage technology, Plessey chose not to invest. After several years in decline, Garrard was sold by Plessey to Gradiente Electronics of Brazil in 1979 and series production was moved to Brazil (Manaus). The remaining Garrard research and development operation in Swindon was reduced to a skeleton operation until completely shut down in 1992. Then, Gradiente licensed the Garrard name to Terence O'Sullivan, who operated as Loricraft Audio, in 1997.
Between 1992 and 1997, the Garrard brand name was licensed to other companies in the US, which imported electronic items built by different, unrelated Far Eastern manufacturers. These included Garrard branded cassette decks, CD players, stereo receivers, portable radio/cassette players, portable Walkman type cassette players, serial-port printer cables, universal TV/audio remote controls, and other miscellany, including turntables that had no connection with any original Garrard design.
In 2018, Cadence Audio SA, who also own the British turntable and tonearm manufacturer SME Limited, took ownership of the Garrard brand and registered trademarks when they purchased Loricraft Audio Ltd. The business was restructured to run under the name of Garrard Turntables UK Ltd.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDJ2X - This image shows the Leaders estate agents office located at 2022 High Street in Northwich, Cheshire, housed within a striking black-and-white timber-framed building designed in a Tudor revival style. The building occupies a prominent corner position in the town centre and features decorative gables, leaded windows, and a small clock turret, all characteristic elements of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century mock Tudor commercial architecture.
Although the building appears historic, its design reflects a period when many English towns adopted Tudor revival styling to convey tradition, reliability, and civic pride, particularly for banks, offices, and commercial premises. The strong visual contrast of the half-timbered facade makes the structure a local landmark and an instantly recognisable feature of Northwich High Street.
In its current use as an estate agency, the building illustrates the adaptive reuse of heritage-style architecture for modern commercial purposes. Estate agents, financial services, and professional firms frequently occupy such buildings, benefiting from their prominent presence and the sense of permanence they convey in a changing high-street environment.
The image was taken in daylight under clear blue skies, with bunting strung across the street suggesting a civic event or seasonal decoration. As a documentary photograph, it captures both architectural character and contemporary town-centre life, reflecting the ongoing evolution of Northwich's high street while retaining visual links to the town's architectural past.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23BR - A traditional street sign for Spaniards Road in Hampstead, north London, displaying the road name and the NW3 postcode district. The sign features black tiled lettering set within a wooden frame and is mounted in front of a brick wall with surrounding greenery, giving it a slightly rustic, historic appearance.
Spaniards Road runs along the edge of Hampstead Heath and forms part of the boundary area between Hampstead and Highgate. The road is historically associated with the surrounding heathland, long-established residential properties, and nearby landmarks, including the well-known Spaniards Inn.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents everyday London wayfinding and neighbourhood identity. It is suitable for illustrating themes of London geography, place names, urban history, and the character of north London's streets and conservation areas.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X1K - This image shows the wooden altar and reredos inside St Martin-cum-Gregory, a historic parish church located just off Micklegate in the city of York. The altar is richly crafted in dark wood and incorporates carved panels, decorative columns, and memorial inscriptions, reflecting the craftsmanship and religious sensibilities of its period.
St Martin-cum-Gregory is one of York's many ancient parish churches, with origins dating back to medieval times. Like many Anglican churches, its interior features a combination of architectural elements and memorials that reflect centuries of worship, patronage, and local history.
The altar forms the liturgical focus of the church, used for Holy Communion and central acts of worship. The surrounding woodwork and inscriptions demonstrate how church interiors often served both spiritual and commemorative functions, honouring individuals or groups connected to the parish.
Photographed straight-on to emphasise symmetry, scale, and detail, the image is well suited for editorial use covering English church heritage, Anglican worship spaces, historic interiors, religious architecture, and York's rich ecclesiastical history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6GBKH - The Collegiate Church of St Peter, Wolverhampton is the main church of the city, and is the natural centre of the conurbation, a most beautiful Medieval creation made in the typical reddish stone of the area.
The history of the Church goes back far beyond that, to the 8th Century, when Wulfere, King of Mercia converted to Christianity and had various monasteries and churches built in his great territories, including, it is thought, in Wolverhampton. Later in the 10th Century Wulfruna, widow of Athelme, Earl of Northampton and relative of Ethelred II, re-endowed the Church, providing it with lands to maintain a monastery, dean and secular canons, hence a Collegiate Church (as opposed to a Cathedral or church under the control of a bishop). William the Conqueror gave it to his new Bishop of Worcester, and after many changes of ownership in later years, the canons again gained freedoms and privileges. By the 14th Century, the Church was somewhat dilapidated, and in the 15th Century it was converted into a chancel for a new, larger church which was built on the site: while the old chancel is long gone, it is the 15th-16th Century Church we largely see today
Thomas Lane, and Katherine Lane, 1582, a second chest tomb, surely one of the sights of Wolverhampton, with recumbent figures of the deceased lying in stately pomp on top, and a line of carved figures in high relief on the long side, and three coats of arms on the exposed short side, all in brownish alabaster. The two principal figures lying on top are richly dressed, with large ruffs at their necks, smaller ones at their wrists, and wearing rings on their fingers. Thomas Lane is in armour, decorated with scrolls and repeating designs. As with the Leveson monument, the features are rather flattened. He has carefully carved, short wavy hair, and a rather plainer beard. Katherine Lane has a banded hairstyle, and an embroidered skirt. Each has their arms across their breasts and their hands in prayer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTR48G - Throughout his remarkable career, David Hockney has demonstrated both a profound passion for the great avant-garde traditions of the past and a voraciously creative vision for his own, category-defying artistic practice. Exemplifying this enigmatic balance in his oeuvre, Chair from 1985 powerfully fuses an eloquent tribute to past masters Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Pablo Picassowith the striking subversion of traditional perspective that defines many of Hockney's masterworks. It is a truly exceptional example of the rich color palette, compositional structure, and intimately significant subject matter that characterises the very best of his output. Widely renowned as Britain's greatest living painter, Hockney's remarkable output is predicated upon a unique ability to absorb, execute, and contribute to the greatest avant-garde movements of Twentieth Century while simultaneously defying strict categorisation. In its seamless fusion of art historical homage and highly particularised artistic sentiment, Chair encapsulates the indisputable vitality, innovation, and enchanting charm of Hockney's inimitable painterly oeuvre.
I've always loved chairs: they have arms and legs, like people There is a presence in the two paintings van Gogh and Gauguin. They're not just empty chairs.

Did you know that one third of the UK's bee population has disappeared in the last decade?
For over 20 years, we've been creating giant straw sculptures to mark anniversaries and other major events. This year, our choice was an easy one! Being a certified organic farm we do our best to enhance the farms natural environment for the local wildlife and now we want to help raise awareness around bee conservation.
We have teamed up with The Bumble Bee Conservation Trust to help them keep up the incredible work that they do in protecting our bees. For every piece of our specially made chocolate honeycomb we'll be donating 50p!
In celebration of our new arrival we have also been busy bees developing a delicious homemade flavour. Our new Lavender and Honey ice cream is created with our own burnt honey ripple made using local honey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNN58P - St Mary's Church is an Anglican parish church in Nantwich, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It has been called the Cathedral of South Cheshire and it is considered by some to be one of the finest medieval churches, not only in Cheshire, but in the whole of England. The architectural writer Raymond Richards described it as one of the great architectural treasures of Cheshire, and Alec Clifton-Taylor included it in his list of outstanding English parish churches.
The building dates from the 14th century, although a number of changes have since been made, particularly a substantial 19th-century restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church and its octagonal tower are built in red sandstone. Features of the church's interior include the lierne-vaulted ceiling of the choir, the carved stone canopies of the sedilia in the chancel, and the intricately carved wooden canopies over the choirstalls together with the 20 misericords at the back of the stalls. The church is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Nantwich

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00AP - Papaver somniferum, commonly known as the opium poppy or breadseed poppy, is a species of flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae. It is the species of plant from which both opium and poppy seeds are derived and is also a valuable ornamental plant, grown in gardens. Its native range is probably the eastern Mediterranean, but is now obscured by ancient introductions and cultivation, being naturalized across much of Europe and Asia.
This poppy is grown as an agricultural crop on a large scale, for one of three primary purposes. The first is to produce seeds that are eaten by humans, known commonly as poppy seed. The second is to produce opium for use mainly by the pharmaceutical industry. The third is to produce other alkaloids, mainly thebaine and oripavine, that are processed by the pharmaceutical industry into drugs such as hydrocodone and oxycodone. Each of these goals has special breeds that are targeted at one of these businesses, and breeding efforts (including biotechnological ones) are continually underway. A comparatively small amount of Papaver somniferum is also produced commercially for ornamental purposes.
The common name opium poppy is increasingly a misnomer as many varieties have been bred that do not produce a significant quantity of opium. The cultivar 'Sujata' produces no latex at all. Breadseed poppy is more accurate as a common name today because all varieties of Papaver somniferum produce edible seeds. This differentiation has strong implications for legal policy surrounding the growing of this plant

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2PA - The City Chambers or Municipal Buildings in Glasgow, Scotland, has functioned as the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since 1996, and of preceding forms of municipal government in the city since 1889, located on the eastern side of the city's George Square. An eminent example of Victorian civic architecture, the building was constructed between 1882 and 1888 to a competition winning design by Scottish architect William Young. a native of Paisley.
Inaugurated in August 1888 by Queen Victoria, the first council meeting was held within the chambers in October 1889. The building originally had an area of 5,016 m2 (53,990 sq ft). In 1923, an extension to the east side of the building in John Street was opened and in 1984 Exchange House in George Street was completed, increasing the size of the City Chambers complex to some 14,000 m2 - The Right Honourable Lord Provost of Glasgow is the convener of the Glasgow City Council. Elected by the city councillors, the Lord Provost serves not only as the chair of that body, but as a figurehead for the entire city. The office is equivalent in many ways to the institution of mayor that exists in the cities of many other countries.
The Lord Provost of the City of Glasgow, by virtue of office, is also:
Lord-Lieutenant of the County of the City of Glasgow
a Commissioner of Northern Lighthouses.
Each of the 32 Scottish local authorities elects a provost, but it is only the four main cities, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee that have a Lord Provost, who also serves as the lord-lieutenant for the city. This is codified in the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994. As of 2017, the role attracts an salary of £41,546, plus an annual expenses budget of £5000

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A8EBHY - Arley Hall is a country house in the village of Arley, Cheshire, England, about 4 miles (6 km) south of Lymm and 5 miles (8 km) north of Northwich. It is home to the owner, Thomas Shelby OBE, MP and his family. The house is a Grade II* listed building, as is its adjacent chapel. Formal gardens to the southwest of the hall are also listed at Grade II* on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. In the grounds are more listed buildings, a cruck barn being listed as Grade I, and the other buildings as Grade II.
The hall was built for Rowland Egerton-Warburton between 1832 and 1845, to replace an earlier house on the site. Local architect George Latham designed the house in a style which has become known as Jacobethan, copying elements of Elizabethan architecture. A Gothic Revival chapel designed by Anthony Salvin was subsequently built next to the hall. By the mid-20th century parts of the house were in poor condition and were demolished, to be replaced by five private homes in a matching architectural style.
The present gardens were created in the 1830s, and were developed during the 20th century. The garden's herbaceous border was one of the first of its type in Britain, and remains one of the finest. The house and its gardens have been open to the public since the 1960s, and have also been used as a film location. Stockley Farm, part of the Arley estate, is an additional visitor attraction for children and families.

In January 2003, the resource centre planning applications for works to the whole building were submitted, and planning permission was granted in May. In February 2004, the GATEWAY was chosen as the new name. In April 2004 WREN awarded the GATEWAY funding towards work to make the building more accessible to disable clients. Works were completed in July 2004. In June 2006, the new conference suite opened. Funding for the construction of this new suite was provided by 'ChangeUp Cheshire & Warrington' and work was commissioned by Warrington Housing Association on behalf of the GATEWAY.
As a community facility, the GATEWAY is an independent charity providing a central focus for 25+ local voluntary and statutory organisations and services to come and work together to help people in the local community. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBAPPX - Arrears (or arrearage) is a legal term for the part of a debt that is overdue after missing one or more required payments. The amount of the arrears is the amount accrued from the date on which the first missed payment was due. The term is usually used in relation with periodically recurring payments such as rent, bills, royalties (or other contractual payments), and child support.
Payment in arrear is a payment made after a service has been provided, as distinct from in advance, which are payments made at the start of a period. For instance, rent is usually paid in advance, but mortgages in arrear (the interest for the period is due at the end of the period). Employees' salaries are usually paid in arrear. Payment at the end of a period is referred to by the singular arrear, to distinguish from past due payments. For example, a housing tenant who is obliged to pay rent at the end of each month, is said to pay rent in arrear, while a tenant who has not paid rental due for 30 days is said to be one month in arrears. Precise usage may differ slightly (e.g. in arrear or in arrears for the same situation) in different countries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GT3E - The stocks were employed by civil and military authorities from medieval to early modern times including Colonial America. Public punishment in the stocks was a common occurrence from around 1500 until at least 1748. The stocks were especially popular among the early American Puritans, who frequently employed the stocks for punishing the lower class.
In the American colonies, the stocks were also used, not only for punishment, but as a means of restraining individuals awaiting trial.
The offender would be exposed to whatever treatment those who passed by could imagine. This could include tickling of the feet. As noted by the New York Times in an article dated November 13, 1887, Gone, too, are the parish stocks, in which offenders against public morality formerly sat imprisoned, with their legs held fast beneath a heavy wooden yoke, while sundry small but fiendish boys improved the occasion by deliberately pulling off their shoes and tickling the soles of their defenseless feet.
England's Statute of Labourers 1351 prescribed the use of the stocks for unruly artisans and required that every town and village erect a set of stocks. Sources indicate that the stocks were used in England for over 500 years and have never been formally abolished.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EGD9 - The Bank's history dates back to the late eighteenth century, with a possible starting date of 1782. The first partnership was with Joseph Parr, a sugar boiler, his brother-in-law Matthew Lyon, and Walter Kerfoot, a solicitor. Partnership names changed and the firm was variously known as Parr & Co, and Parr, Lyon
more colloquially it was known as The Warrington Bank.
Parr's remained essentially a local bank with offices in Warrington, Runcorn and St Helens until 1865 when the it became a joint stock bank under the name Parr's Banking Company. Helped by a series of acquisitions, including the National Bank of Liverpool, Parr's built up its presence in Cheshire, Lancashire and Staffordshire
by 1890 there were 22 branches and 21 sub-branches.
The Bank's most important strategic move came in 1891 when it purchased the small London bank of Fuller, Banbury, Nix & Co.. This gave Parr's a seat on the London Clearing House and, in contrast to the nearby Bank of Liverpool it immediately moved the head office down to London. With Fuller giving the Bank an initial London presence, the substance was provided by the acquisition of the Alliance Bank in 1892.
The Alliance had emerged from the financial reconstruction which had seen it lose its Liverpool and Manchester offices and now had 12 branches in London
in recognition of Alliance's importance the name of the Bank was changed to Parr's Banking Company and the Alliance Bank. Other smaller London banks were acquired and in 1896 it bought the Consolidated Bank, only slightly smaller than the Alliance, but this time a London bank with branches in Manchester. At that point, the name was returned to Parr's Bank.
By the outbreak of war in 1914 Parr's had almost 400 branches and sub-branches. In 1918 Parr's agreed to amalgamate with the London County and Westminster Bank. The Chairman of Parr's made the case: We gain access to a very large area in the Home Counties. They gain a first-class introduction to Lancashire & beyond.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HTJD - Calocera viscosa, commonly known as the yellow stagshorn, is a jelly fungus, a member of the Dacrymycetales, an order of fungi characterized by their unique tuning fork basidia.
It has bright orange, yellow or occasionally white branching basidiocarps, which are somewhat gelatinous in texture and slimy to the touch (hence the specific name). It is relatively large for a jelly fungus, and can reach up to ten centimetres in height.[2] It is widespread and common, and its bright colour makes it stand out in its habitat. It grows on decaying conifer wood, typically stumps and roots, although this may not be obvious if the wood is covered in leaf litter. It fruits throughout the year, but is most commonly seen in autumn.
It is not poisonous, but its tough gelatinous texture and nondescript taste and odour make it unattractive as a food. Its striking colour has led to it being used as a garnish on occasion, however

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX2M - Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric (play /ˈæɡərɪk/) or fly amanita (play /ˌæməˈnaɪtə/), is a poisonous and psychoactive basidiomycete fungus, one of many in the genus Amanita. Native throughout the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Amanita muscaria has been unintentionally introduced to many countries in the southern hemisphere, generally as a symbiont with pine plantations, and is now a true cosmopolitan species. It associates with various deciduous and coniferous trees. The quintessential toadstool, it is a large white-gilled, white-spotted, usually deep red mushroom, one of the most recognizable and widely encountered in popular culture. Several subspecies, with differing cap colour, have been recognised to date, including the brown regalis (considered a separate species), the yellow-orange flavivolvata, guessowii, and formosa, and the pinkish persicina. Genetic studies published in 2006 and 2008 show several sharply delineated clades which may represent separate species.
Although it is generally considered poisonous, deaths from its consumption are extremely rare, and it is eaten as a food in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America after parboiling. Amanita muscaria is now primarily famed for its hallucinogenic properties, with its main psychoactive constituent being the compound muscimol. It was used as an intoxicant and entheogen by the peoples of Siberia and has a religious significance in these cultures. There has been much speculation on traditional use of this mushroom as an intoxicant in places other than Siberia
however, such traditions are far less well documented. The American banker and amateur ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson proposed that the fly agaric was in fact the soma of the ancient Rig Veda texts of India
since its introduction in 1968 this theory has gained both followers and detractors in anthropological literature

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BE34EK - The Scottish Parliament Building (Scottish Gaelic: Pàrlamaid na h-Alba, Scots: Scots Pairlament Biggin) is the home of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Edinburgh. Construction of the building commenced in June 1999 and the Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) held their first debate in the new building on 7 September 2004. The formal opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on 9 October 2004. Enric Miralles, the Spanish architect who designed the building, died before its completion.
From 1999 until the opening of the new building in 2004, committee rooms and the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament were housed in the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland located on The Mound in Edinburgh. Office and administrative accommodation in support of the Parliament were provided in buildings leased from the City of Edinburgh Council. The new Scottish Parliament Building brought together these different elements into one purpose-built parliamentary complex, housing 129 MSPs and more than 1,000 staff and civil servants.
From the outset, the building and its construction have been controversial. The choices of location, architect, design, and construction company were all criticised by politicians, the media and the Scottish public. Scheduled to open in 2001, it did so in 2004, more than three years late with an estimated final cost of £414 million, many times higher than initial estimates of between £10m and £40m. A major public inquiry into the handling of the construction, chaired by the former Lord Advocate, Lord Fraser of Carmyllie, was established in 2003. The inquiry concluded in September 2004 and criticised the management of the whole project from the realisation of cost increases down to the way in which major design changes were implemented. Despite these criticisms and a mixed public reaction, the building was welcomed by architectural academics and critics.
