It is known in English as the common bluebell or simply bluebell, a name which is used in Scotland to refer to the harebell, Campanula rotundifolia. In spring, H. non-scripta produces a nodding, one-sided inflorescence of 512 tubular, sweet-scented violetblue flowers, with strongly recurved tepals, and 36 long, linear, basal leaves.
H. non-scripta is particularly associated with ancient woodland where it may dominate the understorey to produce carpets of violetblue flowers in bluebell woods, but also occurs in more open habitats in western regions. It is protected under UK law, and in some other parts of its range. A related species, H. hispanica has also been introduced to the British Isles and hybridises with H. non-scripta to produce intermediates known as H. × massartiana.
Taxonomy
Hyacinthoides non-scripta was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his seminal 1753 work Species Plantarum, as a species in the genus Hyacinthus. The specific epithet non-scriptus[Note 1] means unlettered or unmarked and was intended to distinguish this plant from the classical hyacinth of Greek mythology. This mythical flower, which was almost certainly not the modern hyacinth, sprang up from the blood of the dying prince Hyacinthus. His lover, the god Apollo, shed tears that marked the new flower's petals with the letters AIAI (alas) as a sign of his grief

A 15-ft high, wood and steel sculpture of a crucifixion by Charles Lutyens, first seen in his exhibition of work, Being in the World, at St Paul's Church, Bow Common, London has recently been installed in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.
Called Outraged Christ , this was a spontaneous work it wasn't commissioned created intermittently over a number of years. With the intent of having an encounter with this Man' and with the reality of the event taking place, the sculpture was driven by such questions as Who was this Man? , What did He look like? and Why was this crucifixion remembered for 2,000 years over and above the countless other crucifixions that have taken place? It is a moving and powerful image which, in its making, disclosed itself to Charles as an Outraged Christ . Deeply engaged with this extraordinary event, Charles thought, If the resurrection happened, then was it not already inherent in the crucifixion?
The Grade II-listed St Paul's Church, designed by architects Robert Maguire and Keith Murray and consecrated in 1964, was recently voted Best modern church in Great Britain . It also contains the stunning 800-sq ft mosaic mural, also by Charles, called Angels of the Heavenly Host , the largest single artist-created mosaic mural in the British Isles. Asked by the architects to provide a design for this work I said, at the time, Sorry, it is not possible for me to design an angel, angels appear', recalls Charles. But, incredibly, the architects then said, All right, appear us an angel'. Charles recently gave a talk, in situ, for English Heritage about the mural and its making.

It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.
Geography
Location
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The Vögte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein für Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

Despite its easily distinguishable features, Amanita muscaria is a fungus with several known variations, or subspecies. Recent DNA fungi research, however, has shown that some of these variations are not the same species at all, such as the peach-colored fly agaric (Amanita persicina) for example, but the common name 'fly agaric' clings on.

On the wall of the smoke room are the plans showing the changes made in 1983 (Architects: David Horne Associates) when Allied Breweries converted the pub into one of the earliest of their Holt, Plant & Deakin' pubs these did include making an archway through the rear wall to give access to the smoke room and creating a third room at the rear.
It has an excellent ceramic exterior including the wording 'The Posada' on three tiled panels one on the fascia and two in vertical lettering on pilasters in each of the external recessed porches which have mosaic floors. Below the small-paned bowed window is a dado of golden yellow glazed brick and tiles. Both porches have a glazed brick and tiled dado in golden yellow with cream glazed brick above up to ceiling height with a dark yellow tiled frieze at the top and mosaic floors. Of the five main lower front windows the central three are now plain, which is not likely to have been the case when the pub was built. The leaded window in the right hand door is a modern replacement.
The public bar is a very special room with its tiled walls in orange-brown on the dado and cream above, original bar fittings including rare snob screens and is little altered since 1900. The left hand door leads into a vestibule that looks modern as does the panelling so it has been added later, possibly in 1983. The bar counter looks like the original 1900 one with panelled frontage the only changes being a 1960s/70s slanting piece of timber piece on the left for the present hatch
also, there is a cut right at the front right-hand end where the quadrant becomes straight, facing to the window which is where the hatch was originally.

The history of the Church goes back far beyond that, to the 8th Century, when Wulfere, King of Mercia converted to Christianity and had various monasteries and churches built in his great territories, including, it is thought, in Wolverhampton. Later in the 10th Century Wulfruna, widow of Athelme, Earl of Northampton and relative of Ethelred II, re-endowed the Church, providing it with lands to maintain a monastery, dean and secular canons, hence a Collegiate Church (as opposed to a Cathedral or church under the control of a bishop). William the Conqueror gave it to his new Bishop of Worcester, and after many changes of ownership in later years, the canons again gained freedoms and privileges. By the 14th Century, the Church was somewhat dilapidated, and in the 15th Century it was converted into a chancel for a new, larger church which was built on the site: while the old chancel is long gone, it is the 15th-16th Century Church we largely see today
Thomas Lane, and Katherine Lane, 1582, a second chest tomb, surely one of the sights of Wolverhampton, with recumbent figures of the deceased lying in stately pomp on top, and a line of carved figures in high relief on the long side, and three coats of arms on the exposed short side, all in brownish alabaster. The two principal figures lying on top are richly dressed, with large ruffs at their necks, smaller ones at their wrists, and wearing rings on their fingers. Thomas Lane is in armour, decorated with scrolls and repeating designs. As with the Leveson monument, the features are rather flattened. He has carefully carved, short wavy hair, and a rather plainer beard. Katherine Lane has a banded hairstyle, and an embroidered skirt. Each has their arms across their breasts and their hands in prayer.

It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the electric side'.

Originally known as RUBY, she was renamed MOSSDALE when bought by Abel & Son of Runcorn in the 1930s. They extensively rebuilt and deepened her to obtain maximum load for minimum displacement. She was found abandoned at Ellesmere Port in 1970 and is now preserved on shore at the Boat Museum, Ellesmere Port.
Mossdale's fabric is representative of a typical wooden Mersey flat, being built of oak frames on pitch pine planking doubled where necessary to achieve her shape. Her large foredeck windlass fitted her to work in the tidal Mersey, with a smaller windlass used when warping her into docks. In 1933, Mossdale underwent a major re-build which included lengthening her to 72 feet. Her increased length represents an important period in her working life, marking the development in trade caused by the industrial revolution and the need for her to carry a greater cargo to pay her way. With no means of propulsion, she would generally have been towed by a horse or tug.
Mossdale was never rigged as a sailing flat, but is a good example of a regional river barge from North-West England. She has a substantial rudder, a typical flat bottom, a round bilge and bluff square bows.

They are a morphological group of basidiomycetes-like gilled mushrooms and hydnoid fungi, and not all polypores are closely related to each other. Polypores are also called bracket fungi or shelf fungi, and they characteristically produce woody, shelf- or bracket-shaped or occasionally circular fruiting bodies that are called conks.
Most polypores inhabit tree trunks or branches consuming the wood, but some soil-inhabiting species form mycorrhiza with trees. Polypores and the related corticioid fungi are the most important agents of wood decay, playing a very significant role in nutrient cycling and aiding carbon dioxide absorption by forest ecosystems.
Over one thousand polypore species have been described to science, but a large part of the diversity is still unknown even in relatively well-studied temperate areas. Polypores are much more diverse in old natural forests with abundant dead wood than in younger managed forests or plantations. Consequently, a number of species have declined drastically and are under threat of extinction due to logging and deforestation.
Polypores are used in traditional medicine, and they are actively studied for their medicinal value and various industrial applications. Several polypore species are serious pathogens of plantation trees and are major causes of timber spoilage.
Conks, the fruiting bodies of polypores, lie in a close planar grouping of separate or interconnected horizontal rows. Brackets can range from only a single row of a few caps, to dozens of rows of caps that can weigh several hundred pounds.

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It has been called the Cathedral of South Cheshire and it is considered by some to be one of the finest medieval churches, not only in Cheshire, but in the whole of England. The architectural writer Raymond Richards described it as one of the great architectural treasures of Cheshire, and Alec Clifton-Taylor included it in his list of outstanding English parish churches.
The building dates from the 14th century, although a number of changes have since been made, particularly a substantial 19th-century restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church and its octagonal tower are built in red sandstone. Features of the church's interior include the lierne-vaulted ceiling of the choir, the carved stone canopies of the sedilia in the chancel, and the intricately carved wooden canopies over the choirstalls together with the 20 misericords at the back of the stalls. At street level is another set of shops and other premises, many of which are entered by going down a few steps. Cowper House is a grade I listed building.
The house dates back to 1664 and was constructed following the destruction of many buildings in the city during the Civil War. It was built above medieval undercrofts dating from around 1350-75, or possibly earlier.
Alterations have been carried out on the building in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The house's original owner, Thomas Cowper, had been mayor of Chester in 1641-42 and a Royalist supporter in the Civil War.
The rear undercroft was excavated in 1839, and it is thought that the front undercroft is older than that in the rear.
The red sandstone and half timbered building now incorporates a modern shop front on the ground floor. Between this and the street is a walkway, a sloping stallboard and a rail with balusters overlooking the street.
Above the Row opening is a carved fascia. In the storey above is a window running almost the whole width of the building. Its frame projects from the wall and is carried on eight corbels. The window has 14 lights, is mullioned and transomed, and contains leaded lights. Below and on each side of the window are timber-framed panels.
The top storey is jettied. At its base is a bressummer carved centrally with .T.C.1664 (the initials are those of Thomas Cowper), on each side of which are carved patterns. The top storey has a ten-light mullioned and transomed casement window containing leaded lights. Below the window are eight panels containing wooden carvings, and two similar panels are on each side of the window. Above the window are quadrant-braced panels. The bargeboard is decorated with carvings and at its peak is a finial.

The modern Globe Theatre is an academic approximation based on available evidence of the 1599 and 1614 buildings. The Sackler Studios, an educational and rehearsal studio complex, is situated just around the corner from the main site.
Michelle Terry currently serves as artistic director. She is the second actor-manager in charge of the organisation, following Mark Rylance, the founding artistic director.
The building itself is constructed entirely of English oak, with mortise and tenon joints and is, in this sense, an authentic 16th-century timber-framed building as no structural steel was used. The seats are simple benches (though cushions can be hired for performances) and the Globe has the first and only thatched roof permitted in London since the Great Fire of 1666. The modern thatch is well protected by fire retardants, and sprinklers on the roof ensure further protection against fire

Like them it is a Victorian building (in this case of c.1865) re-modelled about in the early 20th century. They all share corner sites with the public bar occupying the angle and surrounded by an L-shaped corridor. All too have beautiful tiled dados in their corridors dating from Edwardian re-modelling schemes (as seen in our picture). A further similarity is the way the corridor works to provide a drinking area.
Discovery of the documents submitted to the licensing justices enabled former licensee, John O'Dowd, to trace the evolution of the pub to its present form. Back in 1903 a plan shows the public bar laid out as it is now. There was a snug behind it in the heart of the building and left of this, and on the site of the present toilets, a public room labelled parlour'. Then in 1915 the Lion expanded by taking in the building next door at 28 Tithebarn Street also a licensed premises. This enabled the L-shaped corridor to be created round the public bar and the formation of two rooms behind this - a news room in the newly acquired area (the name still survives in the window glass) and a lounge where the skylight is today. Then in 1967, when pubs everywhere were being opened up, plans were drawn up to remove the walls to the corridor from these rooms. These were duly implemented and the corner entrance was blocked. (hence the pub does not merit entry in the Part One of the National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. In 1979 they added glazed partitions, one outside the gents and one on the right as you enter the news room.
The porch on Moorfields side has mosaic floor and one tiled wall from floor to ceiling.

A very successful packet boat service started up running from the London Bridge Inn to Manchester allowing the gentry to travel in style and comfort on the last part of there journey to Manchester, good were also shipped from the warehouse over the road, The boats were in them days pulled by horses, and unusually the horse for the packet boat were trotted along the towpath and were ridden by Bank riders who lived in what is now Thorn Marine.
The quays at thorn marine were also used by Caldwells to ship there tools spades, picks, etc for the gold rush in america and the First World War. The good were shipped to Liverpool where they were loaded onto sea going ships
During the First and second world wars the canal was also used to move munitions and men to Liverpool to be shipped across for the war effort.

We passed Thorn Marine in the spring of 1991 on our 25' Dawncraft Hammie on a two week trip around the Cheshire ring, we noticed it was looking a bit unloved and there was a for sale sign out side.
A few phone calls on our return home we discovered it was still for sale, but not with the agents anymore. After nearly 12 months of negotiations with the vendor and The Manchester ship Canal Company, we finally moved in on the 11th April 1992.
Over the next few years Margaret turned the business around from a fancy good shop back to a chandlery with help from Brian and Nigel when they were not working in their own careers. Brian decided in 1997 to stop paining and decorating and joined Margret working full time in the shop.

The hall was built for Rowland Egerton-Warburton between 1832 and 1845, to replace an earlier house on the site. Local architect George Latham designed the house in a style which has become known as Jacobethan, copying elements of Elizabethan architecture. A Gothic Revival chapel designed by Anthony Salvin was subsequently built next to the hall. By the mid-20th century parts of the house were in poor condition and were demolished, to be replaced by five private homes in a matching architectural style.
The present gardens were created in the 1830s, and were developed during the 20th century. The garden's herbaceous border was one of the first of its type in Britain, and remains one of the finest. The house and its gardens have been open to the public since the 1960s, and have also been used as a film location. Stockley Farm, part of the Arley estate, is an additional visitor attraction for children and families.

Public punishment in the stocks was a common occurrence from around 1500 until at least 1748. The stocks were especially popular among the early American Puritans, who frequently employed the stocks for punishing the lower class.
In the American colonies, the stocks were also used, not only for punishment, but as a means of restraining individuals awaiting trial.
The offender would be exposed to whatever treatment those who passed by could imagine. This could include tickling of the feet. As noted by the New York Times in an article dated November 13, 1887, Gone, too, are the parish stocks, in which offenders against public morality formerly sat imprisoned, with their legs held fast beneath a heavy wooden yoke, while sundry small but fiendish boys improved the occasion by deliberately pulling off their shoes and tickling the soles of their defenseless feet.
England's Statute of Labourers 1351 prescribed the use of the stocks for unruly artisans and required that every town and village erect a set of stocks. Sources indicate that the stocks were used in England for over 500 years and have never been formally abolished.

Close was born on 11 July 1797 in Frome, Somerset, the youngest son of the Rev. Henry Jackson Close, who was at one time Rector of Bentworth, near Alton, in Hampshire. Enrolling at St. John's College, Cambridge in 1816 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1820, and was elevated to MA in 1825. During the same time period, he was ordained a deacon in 1820, and as a priest the following year. In 1822 he was assigned as curate of Willesden and Kingsbury in the London area. Two years later, in 1824, he was assigned to Cheltenham and the parish church of St Mary's, and when the rector died in 1826, he was elevated to that office.
Close served as rector for thirty years, where he was a popular preacher and a noted evangelical. He was a vociferous opponent of the Oxford Movement. He advocated for the creation of a training college for schoolteachers and opposed alcohol, tobacco, horse racing and theatrical amusements. He was involved in the provision of new churches in Cheltenham. On 24 November 1856, he was nominated to be Dean of Carlisle Cathedral by the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, and the appointment was approved by the Queen. That same year, the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Divinity upon Close. He remained as Dean of Carlisle until 1881, when failing health forced him to resign. At the time of his resignation, he was the oldest of all deans in the Church of England He died in Penzance the following year, on 12 December 1882, and was buried in Carlisle Cathedral

Once a handcrafted skill passed down, timber-frame construction has now been modernized with the help of modern industrial tools such as the CNC machines. These machines and mass-production techniques have assisted growth and made for more affordable frames and shorter lead-times for projects.
Timber-framed structures differ from conventional wood-framed buildings in several ways. Timber framing uses fewer, larger wooden members, commonly timbers in the range of 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12), while common wood framing uses many more timbers with dimensions usually in the 5 to 25 cm (2 to 10) range. The methods of fastening the frame members also differ. In conventional framing, the members are joined using nails or other mechanical fasteners, whereas timber framing uses the traditional mortice and tenon or more complex joints that are usually fastened using only wooden pegs.[13] Modern complex structures and timber trusses often incorporate steel joinery such as gusset plates, for both structural and architectural purposes.
Recently, it has become common practice to enclose the timber structure entirely in manufactured panels such as SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). Although the timbers can only be seen from inside the building when so enclosed, construction is less complex and insulation is greater than in traditional timber building.

It was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, and modelled after the British Museum Reading Room, and was the first electrically lit library in the UK. It was completed in 1879 formally opened by the Mayor of Liverpool, Sir Thomas Bland Royden. The front is semicircular with Corinthian columns, and the shape was chosen by the architect to cover the change in the axis of the row of buildings at this point. The Hornby Reading Room (named after Hugh Frederick Hornby) by Thomas Shelmerdine was added in 1906. It stands behind the older building and the interior is decorated in the Edwardian Imperial style

It has bright orange, yellow or occasionally white branching basidiocarps, which are somewhat gelatinous in texture and slimy to the touch (hence the specific name). It is relatively large for a jelly fungus, and can reach up to ten centimetres in height.[2] It is widespread and common, and its bright colour makes it stand out in its habitat. It grows on decaying conifer wood, typically stumps and roots, although this may not be obvious if the wood is covered in leaf litter. It fruits throughout the year, but is most commonly seen in autumn.

'Secrets' was the first Punilux track I came across. I still have the 7' vinyl in my loft as well as the excellent 'Puppet Life'. They took their name from an 1891 painting by Giovanni Segantini in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
Punishment of Luxury, also known as Punilux, are a four-man post-punk band from Newcastle, England, who were active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They released an excellent album 'Laughing Academy' on UA (United Artists), and another on Red Rhino Records. They reformed in the late 1980s and again in 2007.
From a background working in left-wing English fringe theatre groups, Punishment Of Luxury were a four-man post-punk band formed in December 1976 in Newcastle. The band consisted initially of Brian Bond (born Brian Rapkin - vocals), Neville Luxury (born Neville Atkinson - guitar, vocals), Red Helmet (guitar, vocals), Jimi Giro (bass guitar, vocals), and 'Liquid' Les Denham (drums).
They released a single, 'Puppet Life' on the Small Wonder label in July 1978. In 1979 they signed to United Artists and released the singles 'Engine Of Excess' and 'Secrets', and the album Laughing Academy. 1980 saw the release of the single 'Laughing Academy'. An extensive European tour followed and United Artists sent the band into the studio to record another album, a concept album to be called Gigantic Days. However while the recording was still going on, United Artists were taken over by EMI, who dropped the band.
Neville, Bond, and Giro recruited guitarists Steve Sekrit (born Steven Robson) and Tim Magenta to a new lineup, now going by the name Punilux. They released a further album on the Red Rhino label, 7 in 1983, with Magenta replaced by Rab Aitch, before Neville Luxury went solo, releasing the mini-album Feels Like Dancing Wartime in 1984. The album Gigantic Days was finally released, on CD, in 1998 by Overground Records.
The albums are tricky to track down, but worth the effort.
The distinguishing feature of all puffballs is that they do not have an open cap with spore-bearing gills. Instead, spores are produced internally, in a spheroidal fruiting body called a gasterothecium (gasteroid ('stomach-like') basidiocarp). As the spores mature, they form a mass called a gleba in the centre of the fruiting body that is often of a distinctive color and texture.
The basidiocarp remains closed until after the spores have been released from the basidia. Eventually, it develops an aperture, or dries, becomes brittle, and splits, and the spores escape. The spores of puffballs are statismospores rather than ballistospores, meaning they are not actively shot off the basidium.
The fungi are called 'puffballs' because clouds of brown dust-like spores are emitted when the mature fruiting body bursts, or in response to impacts such as those of falling raindrops. Puffballs and similar forms are thought to have evolved repeatedly (that is, in numerous independent events) from hymenomycetes by gasteromycetation, through secotioid stages.
Thus, 'Gasteromycetes' and 'Gasteromycetidae' are now considered to be descriptive, morphological terms (more properly gasteroid or gasteromycetes, to avoid taxonomic implications) but not valid cladistic terms.
These two were spotted in an autumnal wood, near plenty of decaying leaves and branches.
While most puffballs are not poisonous, some often look similar to young agarics, especially the deadly Amanitas, such as the Death Cap mushroom. It is for this reason that all puffballs gathered in mushroom hunting should be cut in half lengthwise. Young puffballs in the edible stage, before maturation of the gleba, have undifferentiated white flesh within
whereas the gills of immature Amanita mushrooms can be seen if they are closely examined.

In spring, many north-western European woods are covered by dense carpets of this flower, these are commonly referred to as 'bluebell woods'. In my youth that was the common name for a large wood beside the railway commuter line between Hadfield and Manchester. In spring it did produce a carpet of blue.
The presence of large numbers of bluebells is often used as an indicator species to identify ancient woodland, particularly in the East of England and Lincolnshire. It is estimated that 70% of all common bluebells are found in Great Britain.
In the UK the common bluebell is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild common bluebells. This legislation was strengthened in 1998 under Schedule 8 of the Act making any trade in wild common bluebell bulbs or seeds an offence. So respect the little blue fellows!

In my youth that was the common name for a large wood beside the railway commuter line between Hadfield and Manchester. In spring it did produce a carpet of blue.
The presence of large numbers of bluebells is often used as an indicator species to identify ancient woodland, particularly in the East of England and Lincolnshire. It is estimated that 70% of all common bluebells are found in Great Britain.
In the UK the common bluebell is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild common bluebells. This legislation was strengthened in 1998 under Schedule 8 of the Act making any trade in wild common bluebell bulbs or seeds an offence. So respect the little blue fellows!

Warrington District Camera Club are looking for similar models and subjects for studio nights like this.
They are looking for interesting studio subjects for a number of future Monday night photo club nights in Grappenhall, Warrington Cheshire.
Sessions start at 7.30pm until about 9.30pm and expenses etc will be paid, as well of course subjects receiving images and prints from the session. In some cases this can be a useful additional to a portfolio etc for securing other modelling work.
They do like unusual subjects and if you are part of another group as part of an interest or hobby, please get in touch.
Over the years WDCC have had circus performers, musicians, dancers, performers, a clown, wheelchair tennis professionals, threatre / amateur theatricals group, an old woodworker and beekeeper, exotic animals keeper, hair and beauty students, bird of prey owner and numerous more unusual and standard model subjects. Birkenhead had the first street tramway in Europe. Opened on 29 August 1860 the first line ran from Woodside (adjoining the terminal of the Mersey Ferry) to Birkenhead Park. This early system was horse-drawn and was the brainchild of flamboyant American, George Francis Train. A preserved tram was on display in the Woodside ferry terminal booking hall.
The system was later electrified and operated from 1901 as Birkenhead Corporation Tramways. Two replica trams, imported from Hong Kong, have been brought into service as part of a heritage tramway between Woodside and Wirral Transport Museum, and Birkenhead Corporation Tramways Car No.20 is preserved on this line and shown here.

The debating chamber contains a shallow elliptical horseshoe of seating for the MSPs, with the governing party or parties sitting in the middle of the semicircle and opposition parties on either side, similar to other European legislatures. Such a layout is intended to blur political divisions and principally reflects the desire to encourage consensus amongst elected members. This is in contrast to the 'adversarial' layout reminiscent of other Westminster style national legislatures, including the House of Commons, where government and opposition sit apart and facing one another
The most notable feature of the chamber is the roof. The roof is supported by a structure of laminated oak beams joined with a total of 112 stainless steel connectors (each slightly different), which in turn are suspended on steel rods from the walls.
Such a structure enables the debating chamber to span over 30 metres (100 ft) without any supporting columns. In entering the chamber, MSPs pass under a stone lintel\u2014the Arniston Stone\u2014that was once part of the pre-1707 Parliament building, Parliament House. The use of the Arniston Stone in the structure of the debating chamber symbolises the connection between the historical Parliament of Scotland and the present day Scottish Parliament.

On 2 March 2006, a beam in the roof of the debating chamber swung loose from its hinges during a debate, resulting in the evacuation of the debating chamber and the suspension of parliamentary business. Parliament moved to other premises while the whole roof structure was inspected and remedial works were carried out. The structural engineers, Arup, stated that the problem with the collapsed beam was entirely due to the failure of one bolt and the absence of another. There was no design fault. The engineers concluded, in a report to MSPs, that the damage is likely to have been done during construction work on the chamber roof, in the latter phases of the project. The report also indicated that whilst one of the bolts was missing, the other was broken and had damaged threads commensurate with being over tightened or jammed, which twisted the head off, or came close to doing so.

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Middlewich.
History
A church on the site was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. A later church was built in the 14th century and its chancel was rebuilt in 1680 and again in 1795.[3] The present church dates from 1842 to 1844 when the body of the church was replaced, and the tower and spire were repaired, the architect being Edmund Sharpe of Lancaster. The nave was lengthened by one bay, heightened and widened, and galleries were inserted on three sides. The tower was damaged when it was struck by lightning on 16 July 1850.[3] A new tower was designed by Sharpe and his partner at the time, E. G. Paley. The chancel and transepts date from 1870 by the later partners in the practice, Paley and Austin.
Architecture
Exterior
The church is built in red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chancel with a north vestry and a south chantry chapel, and a southwest porch. The tower has an octagonal spire with three tiers of lucarnes.
Interior
In the chancel is a two-arched sedilia. The reredos contains an alabaster relief depicting The Last Supper. The monuments in the church include ones to William Tomkinson who died in 1770 by Benjamin Bromfield, to Mrs France who died in 1814 by S. and F. Franceys of Liverpool, to Mrs Harper dated 1833 by Francesco Pozzi of Florence with a relief of a mother and child, and to Frederick and Cecil France-Hayhurst who died in 1915, by Underwood. In the south aisle is a war memorial chapel designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. It contains a reredos with carvings of personifications of virtues, framed by carved friezes, and posts surmounted by angels

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3538129767 - 'Abandoned wooden salt waggon on its original rails. Now showing its age. I arrived seconds before a massive downpour of rain. The Lion Salt Works is the last remaining open pan saltworks in Cheshire, England. It closed as a works in 1986 and is now preserved as a museum. The works is situated in Marston, near Northwich surrounded by salt flashes.
The museum failed to secure funding in the restoration TV show in 2004, however In March 2008 it was announced that the Heritage Lottery Fund had made an award of \u00a34.96m towards the \u00a37m total cost of the restoration project. so we might be seeing it in its former glory soon.
This area was the start of industrial mining of salt and saline processing for the soda ash and other industries that have developed in the area. The site is recognised as an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The pub over the road, The Salt Barge is a nice place to stop for a pint.

Construction of the building commenced in June 1999 and the Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) held their first debate in the new building on 7 September 2004. The formal opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on 9 October 2004. Enric Miralles, the Spanish architect who designed the building, died before its completion.
From 1999 until the opening of the new building in 2004, committee rooms and the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament were housed in the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland located on The Mound in Edinburgh. Office and administrative accommodation in support of the Parliament were provided in buildings leased from the City of Edinburgh Council. The new Scottish Parliament Building brought together these different elements into one purpose-built parliamentary complex, housing 129 MSPs and more than 1,000 staff and civil servants.
From the outset, the building and its construction have been controversial. The choices of location, architect, design, and construction company were all criticised by politicians, the media and the Scottish public. Scheduled to open in 2001, it did so in 2004, more than three years late with an estimated final cost of £414 million, many times higher than initial estimates of between £10m and £40m. A major public inquiry into the handling of the construction, chaired by the former Lord Advocate, Lord Fraser of Carmyllie, was established in 2003. The inquiry concluded in September 2004 and criticised the management of the whole project from the realisation of cost increases down to the way in which major design changes were implemented. Despite these criticisms and a mixed public reaction, the building was welcomed by architectural academics and critics.

The Victorians made the connection between unsanitary conditions and disease that the Elizabethans hadn't and developed municipal sewer systems to try to keep their cities cleaner. The problem was that they didn't have a good way of connecting individual households to the system. Non-flushing water closets could be dressed up, but their contents couldn't be taken out. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries (about the same time the sewers were built), English patents were granted for several different types of water-closet valves, but their flushing actions were pretty inefficient. The wall mounted cistern that became popular in the 1870s vastly improved the situation because it provided a large volume of water under more pressure. Water-closet bowls remained a problem, though, because their rudimentary traps didn't do a very good job of either letting waste go down the drain or keeping sewer gases out of the building. At first these bowls were made of earthenware and glazed with sometimes-elaborate designs. In 1885, Thomas Twyford built the first vitreous china toilet, inspiring competition from other notable English potteries such as Wedgwood and Doulton
it wasn't long before vitreous china became the standard for the fledgling industry.
American inventors were also seeking solutions to the problem of building a sanitary water closet. As early as 1875, James Henry and William Campbell patented a plunger-type water closet
over the next 50 or so years more than 350 applications for patents for various types of water-closet designs were received by the U.S. patent office. In 1907

The Princess Louise is a public house on High Holborn, London, famous for its remarkable interior, with wood panelling and a series of 'booths' around an island bar. It is a tied house, being owned by the Samuel Smith Brewery of Tadcaster, Yorkshire.
The building is protected by its Grade II listing[1] and has what has been described as a rich example of a Victorian public house interior, by William B Simpson and Sons
who contracted out the work. As it is considered so historically significant even the men's toilets, with their marble urinals, are listed. The pub, which is also listed on CAMRA's national inventory of historic pub interiors, was refurbished in 2007.
Being located near Bloomsbury, the British Museum and the University of London, it is patronised by professors and other educationalists.
In June 2009, the pub was joint winner of the best refurbishment class of the 2008 Pub Design Awards awarded annually by CAMRA.[4] Author Peter Haydon included the Princess Louise in his book The Best Pubs in London and rated it No. 5 in the capital, saying it had possibly the best preserved Victorian pub interior in London.
