Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BR174C - A large-scale mural titled Powering Positivity by Liverpool-based artist Paul Curtis, displayed on the side of a multi-storey building on Dale Street in Liverpool city centre, England. The artwork depicts a female athlete clearing hurdles, set against a dramatic sky, with prominent motivational text including Believe in Yourself, Progress Not Perfection, and You'll Never Run Alone.
Paul Curtis, also known professionally as Moose, is known for creating bold, optimistic public artworks across Liverpool and the wider UK, often using sport, community identity, and positive messaging as central themes. This mural reflects those values, combining athletic imagery with encouragement aimed at passers-by in a busy commercial area of the city.
Dale Street is one of Liverpool's historic thoroughfares, linking the commercial district with the waterfront, and has become a prominent location for large-scale public art as part of wider urban regeneration. The mural's scale and placement ensure high visibility, transforming the blank façade of a modern building into a striking landmark within the streetscape.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating contemporary street art, public murals, urban regeneration, inspirational public messaging, women in sport, Liverpool culture, and the role of large-scale artwork in modern city environments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD739D - How to Spot When Your Bra Doesn't Fit
Rather than trying to fit a bra yourself (leave that to the bra fitting experts!) I would advise that being able to identify when your bra doesn't fit is the first important step. Breasts can change size because of so many factors pregnancy, weight change, diet, change in medication, change in exercise routine even if the scales aren't changing, what you're eating can sometimes make breasts change size/shape, so getting properly fitted regularly is vital.
Knowing when it's time to get a newly-fitted bra is the first crucial step to becoming empowered and finding a new (more comfortable) you. When you're measured for a bra you won't need a tape measure using a tape measure to measure boobs is like using one to measure a jug of water. Boobs are 3 dimensional and a tape measure is 2 dimensional it just doesn't work!
A good bra fitting specialist (just like a good tailor) will be able to fit you by eye. All bras fit differently and a good bra fitter should be able to fit each bra to each person. Here at Mish we look at:
The Band
A good-fitting brand should be parallel all the way around and be in line with clips at the back. 80% of the work is done by the band so it needs to be right!
Underwire
Not all bras are underwired but those that are need to have the wire sitting outside the breast tissue in the centre against the rib cage nice and flush against the skin. Sometimes it won't because of the shape of breast or sternum- each person is different.
Cups
Crucially, the breast tissue should be sitting inside the cup and not be cutting it in half to create that four boob' effect!
Shoulder Straps
The tension of the shoulder straps is crucial. It should have enough give' and be able to pull up an inch, but not around your ears! Ideally if you drop your shoulder and try to wriggle the bra strap off it shouldn't come off. If it is then it's too loose (or it could be that the band is too big).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGJW6W - A bronze public sculpture titled Alice Through the Looking Glass by artist Jeanne Argent, depicting the literary character Alice reaching forward in a moment of transition and discovery. The figure is presented emerging through a curved, glass-like frame, referencing Lewis Carroll's classic Victorian children's novel Through the Looking-Glass, part of the wider Alice in Wonderland stories. The expressive pose and stylised form emphasise imagination, curiosity, and the crossing of boundaries between reality and fantasy.
The sculpture is installed outdoors in a landscaped garden setting in Guildford, Surrey, surrounded by greenery and hedging, which enhances the dreamlike quality of the work. Jeanne Argent is known for figurative sculpture that draws on myth, narrative, and human emotion, and this piece reflects the enduring cultural influence of Lewis Carroll's writing on British art and public imagination.
Photographed in daylight during the growing season, the image shows the patinated bronze surface against lush foliage, making it suitable for editorial and commercial uses relating to public art, British sculpture, literary heritage, children's literature, education, tourism, and cultural landmarks in southern England.
Location: Guildford Castle Grounds, Guildford, Surrey, England, GU1 3SX.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP73 - This image shows a Mothers' Union banner displayed within St Mary's Priory and Parish Church in Lancaster. The embroidered textile features a depiction of the Virgin Mary in blue robes, accompanied by Christian symbols and decorative motifs, with the words St Mary's Priory and Parish Church and Lancaster MU clearly visible.
The Mothers' Union is an international Anglican organisation founded in the nineteenth century, focused on supporting families, marriage, and community life within a Christian framework. Local branches, such as the Lancaster Mothers' Union, are typically represented within churches by banners used during services, processions, and special occasions.
Church banners of this kind form part of the material culture of Anglican worship, combining religious symbolism, craft, and local identity. The use of fabric, embroidery, and iconography reflects traditions of devotional art that are intended to be both visually expressive and spiritually meaningful.
Photographed indoors against stone church walls, the image provides a documentary record of parish life and women's organisations within the Church of England. It is well suited for editorial use covering religious heritage, Anglicanism, church interiors, community organisations, and the lived traditions of English parish churches.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHGEEW - Sylvia Plath (October 27, 1932 February 11, 1963) was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. She is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry and is best known for two of her published collections, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960) and Ariel (1965), as well as The Bell Jar, a semi-autobiographical novel published shortly before her suicide in 1963. The Collected Poems was published in 1981, which included previously unpublished works. For this collection Plath was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1982, making her the fourth to receive this honour posthumously.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Plath graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts and the University of Cambridge, England, where she was a student at Newnham College. She married fellow poet Ted Hughes in 1956, and they lived together in the United States and then in England. Their relationship was tumultuous and, in her letters, Plath alleges abuse at his hands. They had two children before separating in 1962.
Plath was clinically depressed for most of her adult life, and was treated multiple times with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). She killed herself in 1963, 11/02/1963

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1W41 - Heptonstall is a small village and civil parish within the Calderdale borough of West Yorkshire, England, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The population of Heptonstall, including the hamlets of Colden and Slack Top, is 1,448, increasing to 1,470 at the 2011 Census. The town of Hebden Bridge lies directly to the south-east. Although Heptonstall is part of Hebden Bridge as a post town, it is not within the Hebden Royd town boundaries.
The village is on the route of the Calderdale Way, a 50-mile (80 km) circular walk around the hills and valleys of Calderdale
The place-name 'Heptonstall' is first recorded as Heptonstall in the 1274 Wakefield Court Rolls, and in 1316 in the Feudal Aids. The name means the stall or stable in Hebden. The name 'Hebden' means rose-hip dene or valley
Heptonstall was the site of a battle during the early part of the English Civil War in 1643.
Historically a centre for hand-loom weaving, Heptonstall's cottages and terraced houses are characterised by large first-floor windows to maximise the light for weaving
In the mid-1980s the paving on a road through Heptonstall was removed, revealing the original stone setts. Although there was a plan to remove the setts, local protests convinced the council to restore them. At the same time the existing concrete street lights were replaced with late 19th-century cast-iron gas lamps. Both developments acted as a traffic calming measure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KE1135 - Estradiol (E2) is a medication and naturally occurring steroid hormone. It is an estrogen and is used mainly in menopausal hormone therapy and to treat low sex hormone levels in women. It is also used in hormonal birth control for women, in hormone therapy for transgender women, and in the treatment of hormone-sensitive cancers like prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women, among other uses. Estradiol can be taken by mouth, held and dissolved under the tongue, as a gel or patch that is applied to the skin, in through the vagina, by injection into muscle or fat, or through the use of an implant that is placed into fat, among other routes.
Side effects of estradiol in women include breast tenderness, breast enlargement, headache, fluid retention, and nausea among others. Men and children who are exposed to estradiol may develop symptoms of feminization, such as breast development and a feminine pattern of fat distribution, and men may also experience low testosterone levels and infertility. Estradiol may increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer in women with intact uteruses if it is not taken together with a progestogen such as progesterone. The combination of estradiol with a progestin, though not with oral progesterone, may increase the risk of breast cancer. Estradiol should not be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or who have breast cancer, among other contraindications
Estradiol is marketed under a large number of brand names throughout the world. Examples of major brand names in which estradiol has been marketed in include Climara, Climen, Dermestril, Divigel, Estrace, Natifa, Estraderm, Estraderm TTS, Estradot, Estreva, Estrimax, Estring, Estrofem, EstroGel, Evorel, Fem7 (or FemSeven), Imvexxy, Menorest, Oesclim, OestroGel, Sandrena, Systen, and Vagifem

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JYYR2M - NatWest Group has appointed the Interpublic media agency Initiative to its £27m planning and buying account following a competitive pitch.
ID Comms supported NatWest Group in the review, which kicked off in January. The appointment covers all the group's brands including RBS, NatWest, Coutts and Ulster Bank.
Margaret Jobling, chief marketing officer of NatWest Group since last year, said: We look forward to working closely with Initiative to deliver our key purpose of helping people, families and businesses to thrive.
The tender process was extremely competitive and we were blown away by the work and talent throughout our review.
Initiative staved off competition from Zenith, which has had the business for nine and a half years, and WPP-backed M/SIX, the sister agency of NatWest's creative shop The & Partnership, to secure the account.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8W1 - As one of the few explicitly gender-separated spaces, the toilet has become a prominent site of conflict and a focal point for gender-critical' feminism. In this article we draw upon an AHRC-funded project, Around the Toilet, to reflect upon and critique trans-exclusionary and trans-hostile narratives of toilet spaces. Such narratives include ciscentric, heteronormative and gender essentialist positions within toilet research and activism which, for example, equate certain actions and bodily functions (such as menstruation) to a particular gender, decry the need for all-gender toilets, and cast suspicion upon the intentions of trans women in public toilet spaces. These include explicitly transmisogynist discourses perpetuated largely by those calling themselves gender-critical' feminists, but also extend to national media, right-wing populist discourses and beyond. We use Around the Toilet data to argue that access to safe and comfortable toilets plays a fundamental role in making trans lives possible. Furthermore, we contend that whether naive, ignorant or explicitly transphobic trans-exclusionary positions do little to improve toilet access for the majority, instead putting trans people, and others with visible markers of gender difference, at a greater risk of violence, and participating in the dangerous homogenisation of womanhood. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A98 - Remembering the 7 million women who contributed to the war effort by working in hundreds of vital jobs
This huge, bronze monument memorialises the women of World War II. It was unveiled in 2005 and the gold lettering on it is said to mimic the font of wartime ration books.
Around the outside, you can see 17 different sculpted uniforms and helmets. These uniforms represent hundreds of vital jobs undertaken by over 7 million women during the Second World War. However, when the war ended and the men returned to their jobs, women were forced to quietly hang up their uniforms and resign
they were expected to return to their lives before the war, often in more domestic roles.
Women's contribution to both the First and Second World Wars have often been historically overlooked. Unlike men, most women were not on the front line, and instead worked on the land, they were called up to be mechanics, engineers, munitions workers and air raid wardens. Women drove buses and fire-engines.
However, there were over 640,000 women in the armed forces during World War II including the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS). Lilian Bader joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and trained to be an Instrument Repairer
in fact, she was one of the first women to qualify in that post. She became a Leading Aircraftwoman at RAF Shawbury and was then promoted to Acting Corporal.
Women like Georgina Masson, pictured below, joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) which was the women's branch of the British army. Georgina, who was born in Oxford, travelled to Trinidad where she worked as a stenographer for Ford. However, she returned to Britain in 1943 to assist the war effort, and became the first black woman Officer in the ATS. Georgina can be seen holding a copy of Picture Post magazine which features her on the cover, dressed in her ATS uniform.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4GPR - Flamenco, in its strictest sense, is a professionalized art-form based on the various folkloric music traditions of Southern Spain in the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Extremadura and Murcia. In a wider sense, it refers to these musical traditions and more modern musical styles which have themselves been deeply influenced by and become blurred with the development of flamenco over the past two centuries. It includes cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance), jaleo (vocalizations), palmas (handclapping) and pitos (finger snapping).
The oldest record of flamenco dates to 1774 in the book Las Cartas Marruecas by José Cadalso. Flamenco has been influenced by and associated with the Romani people in Spain
however, its origin and style are uniquely Andalusian.
Although the Diccionario de la lengua española associates it especially with the Gypsy ethnicity, is more than perceptible the fusion of the different cultures that coincided in the Andalusia of the time. Of all the hypotheses about its origin, the most widespread thesis is that which exposes the Morisco origin, only that the cultural miscegenation that occurred then in Andalusia: Natives, Muslims, Gypsies, Castilians and Jews
propitiated its creation. In fact, it already existed in the region of Andalusia its germ long before the Gypsies arrived, also taking into account that there were gypsies in other regions of Spain and Europe, flamenco was only cultivated by those who were in Andalusia.
Flamenco has become popular all over the world and is taught in many non-Hispanic countries, especially the United States and Japan. In Japan, there are more flamenco academies than there are in Spain. On November 16, 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

I first encountered Chaka Khan at a vinyl record fair in the basement of a hotel in Piccadilly gardens Manchester in the early 1980's. There was a strawberry shaped picture disk of the Rufus and Chaka Khan on sale for £25 (Do you love what you feel). I was sure I had seen some in Rumbelows in Hyde a week before. I nipped on the bus, snapped up 7 copies and made a killing. It was some years later when she went solo I actually appreciated her music properly.
What Cha' Gonna Do for Me is the title track of the Gold certified third solo album by American R&
B/funk singer Chaka Khan. Born Yvette Marie Stevens
March 23, 1953, frequently known as the 'Queen of Funk', she is a 10-time Grammy Award winning American singer-songwriter who gained fame in the 1970s as the frontwoman and focal point of the funk band Rufus.
While still a member of the group in 1978, Khan embarked on a successful solo career. Her signature hits, both with Rufus and as a solo performer, include 'Tell Me Something Good', 'Sweet Thing' which she wrote for her then husband Richard Holland, 'Ain't Nobody', 'I'm Every Woman', 'I Feel for You' and 'Through the Fire'.
Hunched over an antique typewriter, tapping out a melodic metallic beat, Kaile Glick brings a literal meaning to ‘poetry of the streets’. With an air of funky wit, Kaile is a welcome guest on any street. She ventured here from Toronto, Canada to set up The Spontaneous Prose Store in London. Having been turned away from Covent Garden, because she ‘didn’t have a license to stand still’. Well thats Britain for you!

Oi to the World! is a Christmas album by the southern California punk rock band The Vandals. It was released in 1996 by their label Kung Fu Records, who also re-released it in 2000 with altered artwork and a bonus track.
It was the band's sixth full-length studio album and presented holiday-themed songs written and performed with the tongue-in-cheek humor for which the band is known.
Because Kung Fu Records itself had been formed in 1996 and was at this point still a small label, the original pressing of the album was somewhat limited and it remained relatively obscure for several years (the band's major studio albums at this time were being released by Nitro Records). The Vandals maintained a close friendship with fellow Orange County band No Doubt, who covered the album's title track 'Oi to the World' for a Christmas compilation in 1997.
Their version, which was produced by Vandals guitarist Warren Fitzgerald, received mainstream exposure and popularity and spawned a music video. Partly thanks to the exposure brought by association with No Doubt (with whom the Vandals also toured), fan interest in Oi to the World! increased and in 2000 Kung Fu Records, which by now had grown in size, re-released the album with new artwork and a bonus overture, as well as a new intro for the title track.
The Vandals are Dave Quackenbush on vox, Warren Fitzgerald on guitar, backing vocals, Joe Escalante on bass guitar, backing vocals and Josh Freese on drums.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K43PYW - Love Hearts are a type of confectionery manufactured by Swizzels Matlow in the United Kingdom. They are hard, tablet-shaped sweets in various fruit flavors featuring a short, love-related message on one side of the sweet. They are an updated version of Victorian-era Conversation Lozenges
On chewing, the sweet quickly disintegrates into a powdery, starchy consistency
Love Hearts currently come in six flavors, each associated with a color (listed from weakest to strongest flavor):..
White (a plain, sherbet-like, slightly tart vanilla flavor)
Yellow (a sherbet-like flavor with a distinct sharp lemon aftertaste)
Green (a slight lime flavor with a sherbet-like aftertaste)
Orange (a sweet flavor with a slight orange aftertaste)
Purple (an unusual, slightly perfumed berry-like flavor with a strong aftertaste)
Red (cherry flavor)
There are many different messages which can be found on the front of the sweet, most of which are love-related. The message is written in capitals in a sans serif font of varying size. The font is scaled and sometimes stretched out of proportion to fit the available space.
Most messages are written in simple horizontal, centrally aligned lines. There are some exceptions to this rule, including the phrase I Surrender, where the word surrender has been written in an arc around the lower inside edge of the heart outline.
The Just Say No message has an unclear layout, appearing to read Just say No.
Wayne and Coleen Rooney had personalized sweets made for their wedding in the summer of 2008 which read Wayne and Coleen. Special edition Love heart packs were launched for Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011

Bumfluff soon followed and a recognition that girls in the year were going through changes too. You could see from the older years and the sixth form where that process would take them. Opaque tights, filled out hips. Maybe a taste of something to come, forbidden fruit or just something in later years to regret. Bored adults staying together for the sake of a child maybe.
Not something that crosses the mind at the back of the groundsmens hut in the old showers. Clumsy, flustered, rubbish really. A rite of passage all the same.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4760224848 - 'The history of smoking can be dated to as early as 5000 BC, and has been recorded in many different cultures across the world. Early smoking evolved in association with religious ceremonies
as offerings to deities, in cleansing rituals or to allow shamans and priests to alter their minds for purposes of divination or spiritual enlightenment.
After the European exploration and conquest of the Americas, the practice of smoking tobacco quickly spread to the rest of the world. In regions like India and Subsaharan Africa, it merged with existing practices of smoking (mostly of cannabis). In Europe, it introduced a new type of social activity and a form of drug intake which previously had been unknown.
Perception surrounding smoking has varied over time and from one place to another
holy and sinful, sophisticated and vulgar, a panacea and deadly health hazard. Only relatively recently, and primarily in industrialized Western countries, has smoking come to be viewed in a decidedly negative light.
Today medical studies have proven that smoking tobacco is among the leading causes of many diseases such as lung cancer, heart attacks, erectile dysfunction and can also lead to birth defects. The inherent health hazards of smoking have caused many countries to institute high taxes on tobacco products and anti-smoking campaigns are launched every year in an attempt to curb tobacco smoking.
Due to the smoking ban in pubs and other public places, many businesses are suffering. Only last week a news item suggested 'Expectant mothers to be given smoking breath tests: Health watchdog tells midwives to challenge all pregnant women' in the UK Daily Mail which stated:
'Last night midwives reacted with fury to the guidance - saying the tests could undermine trust by forcing them virtually to accuse new mothers of lying.
And critics rounded on NICE, which was set up by Labour to assess which drugs and treatments should be available on the NHS, accusing it straying beyond its remit by seeking to influence yet more aspects of people's lives.
Strange that the Daily Mail still managed to blame Labour for the advice although we have now had a collonic Government of Tories and Libdems for the last two months around here. Still if encouraging mothers to give up for the sake of the health of their offspring, can that be so bad. Nothing says they cannot spark up again if really desperate after giving birth, does it?

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4541381975 - 'A beautiful lichen patterned old gravestone in the country church at Wansford. It is almost a natural work of art.
Lichens are composite organisms consisting of a symbiotic association of a fungus (the mycobiont) with a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont or phycobiont), usually either a green alga (commonly Trebouxia) or cyanobacterium (commonly Nostoc). Lichens are very different from descrite fungus etc, particularly in that they can survive quite extreme environments.
They can be used to analyse ozone depletion and metal contamination and may have more uses in the future. Purfumes and cosmetics have used them as have traditional medical remedies.
Tonight just before uploading this image I dug out my old penguin paperback copy of 'The Trouble With lichen' by the author John Wyndham, which I read some yongs ago, The plot concerns a young woman biochemist who discovers that a chemical extracted from an unusual strain of lichen (hence the title) can be used to retard the ageing process, enabling people to live to around 200–300 years. Wyndham speculates how society would deal with this prospect. Powerful women in England are the customers of this miracle product and strands of female emancipation run through the novel.
