Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE74K - The Rams Head public house in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, is shown during a cold winter period in January with light snow covering the ground and a decorated Christmas tree standing outside the pub. The historic building, with its mix of brickwork and traditional architectural features, is set against clear blue skies and low winter sunlight, which highlights the textures of the walls, roof and surrounding outdoor seating areas. Snow settled on benches and pathways reinforces the seasonal setting and the crisp atmosphere of a winter's day in rural England.
Village pubs such as the Rams Head have long played an important role in British social and cultural life, acting as meeting places, landmarks and centres of community activity. During the winter and festive season, pubs often become visual symbols of warmth and tradition, even when photographed without people present. The Christmas tree outside the pub adds a seasonal focal point, linking the image to themes of celebration, tradition and continuity within English village life.
The photograph reflects wider themes of British pub culture, hospitality, leisure and local identity, as well as seasonal change and winter weather in the United Kingdom. It is suitable for editorial use in travel and lifestyle features, hospitality coverage, festive and winter-themed publications, calendars and broader cultural storytelling focused on traditional England, rural communities and the enduring presence of village pubs within the countryside.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75H - The Parr Arms public house stands alongside St Wilfrid's Church on Church Lane in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, photographed during a cold winter period in January with light snow visible on the ground and outdoor seating areas. The white-painted pub, a Robinsons Brewery tied house, is shown in the foreground, while the red sandstone tower of St Wilfrid's Church rises behind it, creating a distinctive and recognisable village scene. Clear blue skies and low winter sunlight emphasise the textures of the church stonework and the contrasting surfaces of the pub exterior.
The pairing of pub and parish church reflects a long-established pattern within English village life, where places of worship and social gathering sit side by side at the heart of the community. In winter conditions, particularly with snow and frost present, these buildings take on a heightened sense of tradition, continuity and calm. The absence of people adds to the quiet atmosphere, reinforcing themes of stillness, reflection and seasonal change.
St Wilfrid's Church, an Anglican parish church with medieval origins, represents the religious heritage of the village, while the Parr Arms embodies British pub culture and hospitality. Together, they illustrate the social and cultural fabric of rural England, where faith, leisure and community life intersect. The image lends itself to a wide range of editorial uses, including travel features, heritage publications, lifestyle articles, calendars and broader storytelling focused on traditional England, village identity and winter landscapes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75M - The sign for St Wilfrid's Parish Church in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, is shown during a cold winter period in January with snow settled on the surrounding wall and ground. The red church notice board, displaying service information and parish details, stands prominently against clear blue skies, while frost and snow emphasise the seasonal conditions. In the foreground, memorial plaques commemorate the Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and the Platinum Jubilee in 2022 of Queen Elizabeth II, linking the church and village directly to national moments of royal celebration and remembrance.
St Wilfrid's Church is an Anglican parish church with deep historical roots in the village, and the presence of jubilee memorials reflects the long-standing connection between the Church of England, the British monarchy and local communities. The image captures a moment where religion, monarchy and village identity intersect, with the winter setting adding a sense of stillness, reflection and continuity. The absence of people allows the focus to rest on the symbols of heritage and commemoration rather than daily activity.
Beyond its local significance, the photograph lends itself to wider editorial use in stories about British royal history, public remembrance, community memorials and the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. It also works as a visual representation of traditional English village life, seasonal change and the role of parish churches as custodians of local and national history. The winter snow and clear light enhance its suitability for heritage publications, educational material, calendars and broader cultural features exploring identity, memory and continuity in Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75P - The Parr Arms, a traditional British public house tied to Robinsons Brewery, stands in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, photographed during a cold winter period in January with light snow covering the pub garden and surrounding paved areas. The white-painted pub building, with its distinctive signage, wrought iron gates and lantern-style lights, is shown under clear blue skies and low winter sunlight, which highlights the crisp textures of the exterior and the contrast between snow, brickwork and painted surfaces.
Village pubs such as the Parr Arms have long played an important role in English social life, acting as community meeting places and focal points for rural villages. In winter, particularly during periods of frost and snow, these pubs take on an additional sense of warmth and familiarity, even when photographed without people present. The quiet, undisturbed setting enhances the feeling of calm and nostalgia often associated with traditional English pubs in the countryside.
The image reflects wider themes of British pub culture, hospitality, leisure and local identity, as well as seasonal change and winter weather in England. As a Robinsons Brewery tied house, the pub also represents the long-established brewing traditions of the North West of England. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75T - The Old Vicarage on Church Lane in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, is shown during a cold winter period in January with light snow settled on the ground and surrounding vegetation. The former vicarage, a historic residential building associated with the nearby parish church, has stood vacant and unused for over a decade and is seen enclosed by fencing, with boarded or empty windows and visible signs of long-term neglect. Clear blue skies and low winter sunlight highlight the texture of the stonework and the stark condition of the property, while frost and snow reinforce the sense of abandonment.
The image reflects wider themes of empty homes, unused buildings and the challenges of maintaining historic properties within rural English villages. Once an integral part of local religious and community life, the former vicarage now represents a period of decline and inactivity, contrasting with the surrounding settled village environment. The absence of people and the quiet winter setting add to the feeling of pause and uncertainty, emphasising the passage of time and the impact of prolonged vacancy.
Now under offer for development, the building also symbolises renewal and change, sitting at the intersection of heritage, housing demand and regeneration. The photograph lends itself to editorial use in stories about the British housing market, regeneration of historic buildings, adaptive reuse, planning and development, and the broader issue of empty homes within the UK. Seasonal winter conditions and the rural Cheshire setting further widen its suitability for use in discussions of climate, countryside change and traditional village life undergoing transition.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75X - St Wilfrid's Church, the historic Anglican parish church of Grappenhall, stands on Church Lane near Warrington in Cheshire, England, photographed during a cold winter period in January with a light covering of snow settled across the churchyard. The red sandstone church, largely dating from the medieval period and designated as a Grade I listed building, is shown surrounded by old gravestones, boundary walls and mature trees stripped of leaves by the winter season. Frost and snow accentuate the textures of the stonework and memorials, while clear blue skies and low winter sunlight create sharp contrast and a calm, crisp atmosphere.
The scene reflects the quiet, reflective character often associated with English village churches in winter, when activity is subdued and the landscape feels paused. The snow-covered churchyard evokes themes of time, memory and continuity, with gravestones marking generations of local history and community life. The absence of people enhances the sense of stillness and contemplation, making the image suitable for use in editorial contexts exploring spirituality, faith, remembrance and the passage of time.
Grappenhall is a historic Cheshire village now forming part of the wider Warrington area in North West England, and St Wilfrid's Church has long been a focal point for religious worship, local identity and cultural heritage. The photograph captures both the architectural significance of the building and its role within the rural English landscape, set against seasonal weather conditions typical of winter in Britain. As well as illustrating religious heritage, the image lends itself to wider themes including British history, traditional village life, the English countryside, seasonal change, climate and weather, and the enduring presence of historic landmarks within modern communities.
The combination of winter snow, historic architecture and tranquil rural setting makes the image suitable for travel features, heritage publications etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM994Y - A wide, documentary street-level view of The Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street in Edinburgh, photographed from the West Register Place area to frame the full fa??ade and the famous clock tower. The building's grand sandstone frontage, ornate roofline and central tower create an unmistakable city landmark, with the clock face clearly visible high above the main elevation. The perspective between surrounding city-centre buildings helps emphasise the Balmoral's scale and its position at one of Edinburgh's most recognisable gateways between the New Town and the Old Town.
The light suggests a cold-season day with clear winter brightness: pale blue sky, crisp edges on the stonework, and cool shadows that bring out carved details across the fa??ade. The overall mood is calm and architectural rather than crowd-focused, making the image highly versatile for editorial use where a clean, identifiable Edinburgh location is needed.
This photograph suits themes including Edinburgh tourism, luxury and heritage hospitality, iconic Scottish architecture, and city-break travel. It also works as a strong general illustration for Princes Street and central Edinburgh, with the clock tower acting as an instantly readable visual cue for the Balmoral and the wider city centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9960 - A crisp winter view of the Nelson Monument on Calton Hill in Edinburgh, photographed to emphasise the tall cylindrical tower rising above the rocky hillside and leafless branches. The structure reads as a classic city viewpoint and memorial landmark: a robust stone column with narrow vertical windows, topped by a small turret and a cross silhouetted against a deep blue sky. The base appears castellated and defensive in character, helping the tower feel both commemorative and functional, like a historic lookout as much as a monument.
The light is bright and cold-season clear, with clean contrast on the stonework and strong definition in the tower's circular bands and window surrounds. Vegetation at the bottom of frame suggests late autumn or winter, with bare limbs and muted greenery typical of Calton Hill's exposed slope. The uncluttered composition makes the image highly versatile for editorial layouts, as it presents an instantly recognisable Edinburgh icon without crowds or distractions.
Built as a memorial to Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson and linked to the Battle of Trafalgar, the monument was constructed in the early 19th century, with sources commonly giving a build period of 1807 to 1816. The tower is also associated with time signalling to ships in the Firth of Forth through its historic time ball tradition, reinforcing its practical maritime connections as well as its commemorative purpose.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9966 - A crisp winter view of the Playfair Monument and the observatory dome at the City Observatory complex on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. The building is presented as a bold neoclassical composition: heavy stone blocks, a temple-like form, and rows of classical columns supporting a pediment on each end. Behind and between the two porticoes, the pale observatory dome rises above the roofline, giving a clear visual link to astronomy and scientific heritage. The sky is a deep, clean blue with bright cold-season light that sharpens the edges of the stonework and makes the architecture feel monumental and timeless.
The foreground includes rough winter vegetation and low grasses, which helps communicate the hilltop setting and the feel of an open public park rather than a busy street location. The overall atmosphere suggests a dry, cold day with excellent visibility, the kind of weather that draws visitors up Calton Hill for panoramic views and landmark photography. The image has strong editorial value because it captures an instantly recognisable Edinburgh heritage site, while remaining uncluttered by crowds.
This photograph suits themes such as Edinburgh tourism, Scotland travel, neoclassical architecture, historic observatories, and the city's long association with science and the Enlightenment. It also works well as a general location illustration for Calton Hill, conservation, and heritage-led destination marketing, particularly for winter city-break coverage where clear skies and crisp light are part of the story.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM98YA - A lively winter dusk street scene outside the Marks & Spencer department store on Market Street in Manchester city centre. The photograph is taken from a low, slightly angled viewpoint that emphasises the building's sweeping curved glass frontage and the large, readable MARKS & SPENCER signage wrapping around the corner. Warm interior lighting spills onto the pavement while the sky holds a deepening blue, creating a classic blue hour contrast between cool outdoor tones and the bright retail glow inside.
In the foreground, dense crowds of shoppers in winter coats stream past the entrance, queue, pause, and regroup, capturing the real feel of Manchester's busiest shopping street at peak footfall. The mix of faces and movement gives the image strong editorial value for stories about city-centre retail, consumer behaviour, seasonal shopping, and the everyday rhythm of the UK high street. The composition also works as a clear location identifier, balancing the recognisable brand frontage with the wider public realm, street lighting, and the bustle of an urban evening.
The scene suits a wide range of uses, from travel and lifestyle coverage of Manchester as a city-break destination, to business and economic pieces on retail performance, footfall, and the continuing role of large department stores in central shopping districts. The winter timing is communicated through the low light, bundled clothing, and the after-work atmosphere, making it a versatile image for headlines and general illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9906 - A tight, documentary close-up of a retail shop window promotion in Manchester during November, dominated by bold illuminated text reading BLACK FRIDAY EVENT and UP TO 30% OFF. The typography is clean and high-contrast, designed for instant legibility from the pavement, with the bright lettering standing out against a dark background that suggests evening or indoor low-light conditions. To the left edge of the frame, a large display figure or mannequin is partially visible, hinting at a curated in-store visual merchandising setup without revealing a specific brand identity. Reflections and glossy surfaces add a modern, commercial feel, reinforcing the physical, bricks-and-mortar shopping context rather than online retail.
The image is well suited to editorial and commercial themes around seasonal discounting, high street promotions, consumer behaviour, and the annual Black Friday sales cycle in the UK. It can illustrate stories about retail footfall, marketing tactics, price-led campaigns, and pre-Christmas shopping activity, as well as broader business coverage of the retail economy and consumer spending trends. The clear, readable wording makes it highly searchable and immediately usable as a generic visual for Black Friday, sale events, and in-store discount messaging in a British city setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97JG - A wide, documentary view of a vibrant painted wall mural spelling STOCKPORT in large, bold letters beside a car park in Stockport, Greater Manchester. The artwork uses bright, contrasting colours and playful illustrated elements around the lettering, giving the scene a strong sense of civic pride and place identity. The mural reads as both public art and informal wayfinding, a visual you are here marker designed to lift an everyday parking environment and make it more memorable for residents and visitors.
The foreground includes typical car-park cues such as barrier rails and painted bay markings, reinforcing the practical setting, while the mural transforms the background into a graphic, social-media-friendly backdrop. The light is crisp and clear, consistent with a cold-season day, with a blue sky and clean shadows suggesting bright winter conditions rather than rain. The overall feel is optimistic and modern, aligning with the kind of culture-led regeneration and placemaking projects many UK towns have used to refresh public spaces and encourage footfall.
Editorially, the image is useful for themes including town centre regeneration, community art, street art and murals, destination marketing, and how public realm improvements can change perceptions of utilitarian places like car parks. It also works well as a general Stockport location image, with the large readable text providing instant geographic context for travel, local news, and lifestyle coverage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97PF - A documentary, upward-angled view of the restored Winter's building on Stockport's Underbank, photographed to emphasise the famous exterior clock feature and its theatrical elements. The composition captures the projecting clock face with clear WINTER'S branding, flanked by decorative niches and traditional bell fittings that hint at the building's mechanical showmanship. The fa??ade is presented as an urban landmark rather than a generic shopfront, with crisp lines, clean masonry, and a bright blue sky giving the scene a cold-season clarity typical of winter daylight in Greater Manchester.
Winter's is widely known locally for its unique automaton clock, featuring three character figures, a soldier, a sailor and Father Time, that chime the time with bells mounted above the display. The clock was installed to advertise Jacob Winter's jewellers and clockmaking business and has become a much-loved piece of Stockport street heritage, the kind of place where generations stop, look up, and wait for the moment the figures move. The visual language of the scene supports that story: decorative niches, bell housings, and bold clock graphics that turn a working building into a piece of public theatre.
The building has also played several roles over time, including use as a pub and later restoration as part of the wider Underbanks heritage programme, so the image can carry multiple editorial angles: local history, conservation, town centre regeneration, and the re-use of historic buildings for contemporary leisure and hospitality. It is especially useful as a recognisable Stockport identifier because the clock branding and distinctive fa??ade details do the work of place recognition without needing crowds or close portrait detail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97PY - A tight, documentary close-up of the historic mosaic threshold at Winter's on Stockport's Underbank, showing the elegant scripted words Winter Jeweller set into a richly patterned tiled floor. The entrance mosaic is framed by dark shopfront woodwork, with a partial glimpse of gilded lettering to the left, adding to the sense of a long-established specialist retailer. The design features ornate scrollwork, a decorative border in warm terracotta and cream tones, and fine tessellated workmanship typical of late Victorian or Edwardian commercial entrances, where the floor itself acted as both branding and an invitation to step inside.
The surface shows subtle signs of use, slight wear and weathering consistent with decades of footfall, which gives the image an authentic, time-layered feel rather than a newly installed replica. Lighting is soft and even, likely from overcast winter daylight, allowing the lettering and tile colours to read clearly without harsh reflections. The composition is practical and highly usable for editorial needs because it prioritises legible text and identifiable heritage detailing.
This photograph can support stories about Stockport's Underbanks conservation and regeneration, the survival of traditional independent trades, and the craft heritage embedded in everyday streetscapes. It also works well for broader themes of historic retail branding, typography, decorative arts, and the value of preserving small architectural details that help define a town's character. As a piece of place identity, the mosaic operates like a miniature monument: not grand or commemorative, but quietly telling the story of local commerce, skill, and continuity through design.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97R9 - A crisp, documentary view of Stockport's historic town centre showing the distinctive Victorian roofline of Stockport Market Hall in the foreground and the commanding clock tower of St Mary's Church rising behind it. The repeating white-painted arches and glazing of the market structure create a strong graphic rhythm, while the tall stone church tower adds weight, history and a clear sense of place. The clock face is visible, anchoring the scene as a recognisable civic landmark in the Market Place and Churchgate area.
The atmosphere feels wintry and clear. Bright sunlight breaks across the buildings under a deep blue sky with drifting cloud, giving the stonework and painted market frames crisp contrast and clean edges. The viewpoint emphasises layers of heritage: a working market hall associated with everyday shopping and local trade, set against the long-established parish church that overlooks the marketplace. Together they capture the character of Stockport as a traditional market town within Greater Manchester, where historic public buildings still shape the townscape and visitor experience.
This image works well for editorial themes around British town centres, heritage architecture, listed buildings, local history and cultural identity. It is also useful for travel and tourism coverage, destination guides, and stories about markets and public spaces as social hubs. The combination of readable civic detail, strong architectural forms and seasonal winter light makes it a versatile Stockport location photograph for documentary and illustrative use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97XC - A wide, documentary view across Stockport Market Place capturing the distinctive Victorian Market Hall frontage alongside everyday town-centre businesses, including the clearly signed Town Barbers shop. The market hall's white-painted iron-and-glass structure, with its repeating arched frames and tall glazed panels, creates a strong graphic backdrop that instantly reads as a traditional northern market building. In contrast, the row of smaller street-level premises to the right gives the scene its modern, lived-in character, with local services and shopfronts sitting directly on the edge of the historic public square.
The light and colour suggest a cold-season day. Clear blue sky and crisp winter sunshine pick out the market hall framework and sharpen the edges of the streetscape, while long, clean shadows add depth to the paving and bollards in the foreground. The open space in front of the market hall gives a sense of scale and approach, emphasising the Market Place as a civic heart where trading, meeting, and everyday errands overlap. The presence of a barbershop sign in the same frame adds a useful editorial layer: a reminder that town centres are sustained not just by retail and markets, but by practical personal services that keep footfall steady through the week.
This image is well suited to editorial and commercial themes around UK market towns, heritage architecture in active use, independent businesses, and town-centre resilience. It also works as a recognisable Stockport location photograph, combining the landmark market hall with a named local shop, and presenting the Market Place as a functional, people-scale public realm rather than a purely tourist setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97Y4 - A wide, documentary view down the main aisle of Stockport Market Hall, showing a dense arrangement of indoor stalls and merchandise displays typical of a working British covered market. The perspective leads the eye along the tiled walkway beneath the high roof structure and painted beams, with stall counters and tables packed with goods on both sides. In the foreground, piles of brightly patterned cushions and home textiles create an immediate splash of colour, while further back the scene opens into a layered mix of household items, small gift products, and everyday shopping essentials. Hanging fabrics and banners add to the sense of visual bustle and the slightly improvised charm of market retail.
The lighting reads as natural daytime light filtering through the market hall structure, giving a practical, realistic look rather than a staged retail environment. The atmosphere feels functional and community-oriented: traders set up for routine business, shoppers browsing at walking pace, and the market acting as a steady town-centre draw beyond the big-brand high street. Small details such as sale signage and tightly packed stock suggest value-led shopping and the kind of bargain-hunting culture associated with indoor markets across Greater Manchester.
Editorially, the photograph is useful for stories about independent traders, local economies, and the continued role of markets as social hubs and affordable shopping destinations. It can also support regeneration narratives where historic market halls are positioned as anchors for town-centre renewal, footfall, and community activity. As a location image, it provides a recognisable sense of place and scale for Stockport Market, capturing the everyday texture of northern English retail life in a heritage market setting.

The scene is anchored by multiple pieces of readable place signage, including the large REDROCK STOCKPORT lettering on the main building and the light cinema branding on the adjoining fa??ade. In the foreground, a low concrete bench clearly marked SUFFRAGETTE SQUARE helps identify the location, turning the image into a strong, searchable record of this named civic space.
The square is presented as a modern, people-first environment with planted beds, low seating, and a broad pedestrian surface that feels designed for lingering rather than simply passing through. Autumn colour is visible in the trees, with orange leaves adding warmth against cool grey paving and a pale, bright sky. The light suggests a cold-season day, likely late autumn or winter, with crisp clarity and a slightly damp look to surfaces that hints at recent rain typical of Greater Manchester. Surrounding shopfronts and food outlets, including visible retail signage such as GULZ DELI, reinforce the mixed-use character of the area and its role as a leisure and dining destination.
Editorially, the photograph works for themes of town centre regeneration, public realm investment, high street renewal, and the shift toward leisure-led development, cinema, and food offers. It suits local government and urban planning coverage, as well as travel and lifestyle pieces that need a contemporary Stockport location image showing modern civic space design in everyday use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM985E - A clean, documentary exterior view of the pedestrian entrance to Stockport Interchange, showing the modern curved glass frontage and prominent Bee Network branding on the doors. The yellow bee emblems are highly visible and act as an immediate location and organisation cue, making the image useful for editors who need a clear, neutral illustration of Greater Manchester's integrated transport network. The building design reads as contemporary civic infrastructure, with pale cladding, wide glazing, and a rounded upper level that gives the entrance a modern, purpose-built feel.
The light suggests a cold-season day with clear winter sunshine and a blue sky, producing crisp reflections in the glass and sharp edges on the fa??ade. The framing stays focused on the entrance and signage rather than crowds or vehicles, which keeps the image versatile for multiple contexts, including travel guidance, transport service updates, accessibility information, and regeneration coverage. As a location identifier, the combination of the Bee Network logos and the recognisable interchange architecture makes the scene unmistakably about public transport in Stockport town centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM985P - A wide, atmospheric winter sunset view across Stockport Interchange, looking down into the modern bus station bowl as a yellow double decker bus pulls away from the stands. The low sun sits just above the horizon and breaks through the scene, creating warm golden light, long shadows, and a small flare, while the sky remains a clean cold blue. Fresh road markings and empty bays emphasise the scale of the interchange and the calm between peaks, with the sweeping upper walkway framing the top of the bus station like a balcony.
Beyond the interchange, the brick arches of the Stockport railway viaduct stretch across the background, tying the new transport hub to the town's older industrial infrastructure. The contrast is the story: contemporary public transport design and town-centre regeneration in the foreground, Victorian engineering and city heritage behind it. The winter feel comes through in the low angle light and crisp clarity, suggesting a dry, cold evening rather than rain.
This image is well suited to editorial coverage of the Bee Network, public transport investment, commuting, and sustainable urban mobility in Greater Manchester. It also works for broader themes such as regeneration, modern civic infrastructure, and the relationship between transport interchanges and the reshaping of town centres. Stockport Interchange is a key Bee Network project delivered with partners including Stockport Council and TfGM, and the location is immediately identifiable through the combination of the interchange form and the iconic viaduct arches.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9867 - A clean, contemporary exterior view of Stockport Interchange in Greater Manchester, featuring prominent Bee Network branding and the large Stockport Interchange name mounted on modern cladding. The yellow bee emblem, strongly associated with Greater Manchester identity and the Bee Network transport system, provides an instantly recognisable visual anchor for editorial and commercial uses. The photo is taken in crisp winter conditions, with bright low sunlight and a clear blue sky that gives the scene a fresh, high-contrast look and picks out surface textures and edges on the sign and building fa??ade.
The composition focuses on wayfinding and place identity rather than crowds, making it especially useful as a neutral, non-controversial illustration for stories about public transport, bus network operations, transport investment, and town-centre regeneration. The interchange is presented as a modern piece of civic infrastructure, the type of hub designed to make switching between services simpler for commuters, shoppers, and visitors. The absence of vehicles in the frame keeps attention on the signage and branding, which is often exactly what editors need to represent a transport organisation or location without tying the image to a specific incident.
This picture can support coverage of the Bee Network and Transport for Greater Manchester initiatives, integrated ticketing and information points, accessibility improvements, and wider debates about sustainable urban mobility. It also works well for general Stockport location coverage, with the winter light and calm atmosphere providing a professional, documentary feel suitable for news, policy, and transport features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM987K - A wide, documentary winter view of The Crown Inn on Heaton Lane in Stockport, a classic North West England pub set hard against the dramatic brick arches of the railway viaduct. The pub's pale painted frontage and traditional multi-chimney roofline sit in sharp contrast to the deep red viaduct masonry towering immediately to the right of frame. The main fascia sign clearly reads Crown Inn, with Boddingtons Beer also visible, anchoring the image in familiar Northern pub history and branding. The scene is lit by low, bright winter sun under a clear blue sky, giving crisp shadows and a clean, cold-weather feel rather than rain or snow.
Outdoor benches and simple railings line the frontage, suggesting a spot where regulars and visitors can sit out when the weather behaves, while the street-level perspective keeps the composition grounded in everyday urban life. The close proximity of the viaduct creates a strong sense of place: a pub that feels shaped by infrastructure, with Victorian engineering looming overhead and the building tucked into the shadow of the arches. It is the kind of location that reads immediately as real rather than curated, with honest materials, working-city textures, and a slightly gritty beauty.
Editorially, the photograph is useful for stories about British pub culture, real ale, community hospitality, and the changing fortunes of traditional pubs in Greater Manchester. It also supports broader themes of industrial heritage and the relationship between historic transport structures and local neighbourhood businesses. The combination of readable signage, recognisable setting, and winter atmosphere makes it a strong general illustration for Stockport, Northern England streetscapes, and heritage pubs beneath the railway lines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX1FE - Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a decommissioned coal fired power station located in Warrington, Cheshire, England. Opened in 1971, the station had a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts and took water from the River Mersey. After privatisation in 1990, the station was operated by various companies, and from 2004 to 2022 by SSE Thermal. The power station closed on 31 March 2020. The site was acquired by Peel NRE in July 2022.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney, the station is a prominent local landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines.
An application to build Fiddlers Ferry Power Station was proposed in 1962. It was built by the Cleveland Bridge Company between 1964 and 1971, and came into full operation in 1973
The station generated electricity using four 500 MW generating sets and consumed 195 million litres of water daily from the River Mersey
On 18 November 2015, Amber Rudd, the then Minister in charge of the Department of Energy & Climate Change, proposed that the UK's remaining coal-fired power stations will be shut by 2025 with their use restricted by 2023
In September 2022, site owner Peel NRE submitted its plans to Warrington Council for the demolition of the power station's four northern cooling towers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JT30 - Carl Gustav Jung (26 July 1875 ? 6 June 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. Jung's work has been influential in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, psychology, and religious studies. Jung worked as a research scientist at the Burgh??lzli psychiatric hospital, in Zurich, under Eugen Bleuler. During this time, he came to the attention of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. The two men conducted a lengthy correspondence and collaborated, for a while, on a joint vision of human psychology.
Freud saw the younger Jung as the heir he had been seeking to take forward his new science of psychoanalysis and to this end secured his appointment as president of his newly founded International Psychoanalytical Association. Jung's research and personal vision, however, made it difficult for him to follow his older colleague's doctrine and they parted ways. This division was personally painful for Jung and resulted in the establishment of Jung's analytical psychology as a comprehensive system separate from psychoanalysis.
Among the central concepts of analytical psychology is individuation?the lifelong psychological process of differentiation of the self out of each individual's conscious and unconscious elements. Jung considered it to be the main task of human development. He created some of the best known psychological concepts, including synchronicity, archetypal phenomena, the collective unconscious, the psychological complex and extraversion and introversion.
Jung was also an artist, craftsman, builder and a prolific writer. Many of his works were not published until after his death and some are still awaiting publication

It is the main shopping area of Liverpool and takes its name from St Peter's Church, which was demolished in 1922. The side streets to the north of Church Street lead to Williamson Square, while the Grade I listed Bluecoat Chambers?the oldest surviving building in Liverpool?is to the south along Church Alley. The Liverpool Athenaeum, an institution founded in the 18th century, is also on Church Alley. The area behind the shops on the south side of Church Street is now part of the Liverpool One shopping complex, which opened in October 2008 after the redevelopment of a large part of the L1 postcode area (hence the name).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WKN - This photograph shows an illuminated Christmas display outside a residential property on Ellesmere Road in Stockton Heath, a suburban area of Warrington in Cheshire. The front garden and railings are decorated with strings of white LED lights, alongside large inflatable festive figures including Santa Claus, a snowman, and a decorated Christmas tree, creating a bright and cheerful seasonal scene.
The image was taken at night during the winter months, most likely in December, when Christmas decorations are traditionally displayed across the United Kingdom. The warm glow of the lights contrasts with the darkness of the evening, highlighting the brick fa??ade of the house and the bay window behind the display. The arrangement reflects a common British tradition of decorating homes to mark the Christmas season and contribute to a shared sense of community celebration.
Inflatable decorations such as these have become increasingly popular in recent years, valued for their bold visual impact and ease of installation. In residential areas like Stockton Heath, such displays are often enjoyed by neighbours and passers-by and can become informal local landmarks during the festive period.
Images like this are frequently used to illustrate themes of Christmas, winter celebrations, suburban life, community spirit, seasonal decoration, and British holiday traditions. The photograph captures a familiar and relatable moment of festive enthusiasm within a UK neighbourhood streetscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NJXBNK - The alpaca (Lama pacos) is a species of South American camelid mammal. It is similar to, and often confused with, the llama. However, alpacas are often noticeably smaller than llamas. The two animals are closely related and can successfully crossbreed. Both species are believed to have been domesticated from their wild relatives, the vicu?a and guanaco. There are two breeds of alpaca: the Suri alpaca and the Huacaya alpaca.
Alpacas are kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes of Southern Peru, Western Bolivia, Ecuador, and Northern Chile at an altitude of 3,500 to 5,000 metres (11,000 to 16,000 feet) above sea level. Alpacas are considerably smaller than llamas, and unlike llamas, they were not bred to be working animals, but were bred specifically for their fiber. Alpaca fiber is used for making knitted and woven items, similar to sheep's wool. These items include blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, a wide variety of textiles, and ponchos, in South America, as well as sweaters, socks, coats, and bedding in other parts of the world. The fiber comes in more than 52 natural colors as classified in Peru, 12 as classified in Australia, and 16 as classified in the United States.
Alpacas communicate through body language. The most common is spitting to show dominance when they are in distress, fearful, or feel agitated. Male alpacas are more aggressive than females, and tend to establish dominance within their herd group. In some cases, alpha males will immobilize the head and neck of a weaker or challenging male in order to show their strength and dominance.
In the textile industry, alpaca primarily refers to the hair of Peruvian alpacas, but more broadly it refers to a style of fabric originally made from alpaca hair, such as mohair, Icelandic sheep wool, or even high-quality wool from other breeds of sheep. In trade, distinctions are made between alpacas and the several styles of mohair and luster.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3677M - Haggis (Scottish Gaelic: taigeis) is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal's stomach though now an artificial casing is often used instead. According to the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique: Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour.
It is believed that food similar to haggis?perishable offal quickly cooked inside an animal's stomach, all conveniently available after a hunt?was eaten from ancient times.
Although the name hagws or hagese was first recorded in England c. 1430, the dish is considered traditionally of Scottish origin. It is even the national dish as a result of Scots poet Robert Burns' poem Address to a Haggis of 1786. Haggis is traditionally served with neeps and tatties, boiled and mashed separately, and a dram (a glass of Scotch whisky), especially as the main course of a Burns supper.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG3W4D - With over 220 stalls across nine sites throughout the city centre, this year's Christmas Markets are set to bring some much-needed festive cheer to the city's streets and squares in the run-up to Christmas.
24 years on from the first ever Manchester Christmas Markets in 1998, the markets continue to attract Mancunians and visitors alike to the city in their thousands to fill up on the fantastic festive treats on offer.
This year will see the iconic ski chalet market stalls take over Piccadilly Gardens - once again set to be transformed into the Winter Gardens - Market Street, Cathedral Gardens, Exchange Street, New Cathedral Street, St Ann's Square, Exchange Square, The Corn Exchange, and King Street.
Making sure the city looks its sparkly best in the run-up to Christmas is of course just as important and this year sees the return of the magical Manchester Christmas lights trail, illuminating the city centre throughout the festive season with its walk-through giant baubles, a Manchester bee, and of course Santa Claus himself - who will be keeping an eye on all things Christmas in Manchester from his perch on high in front of Central Library on St Peter's Square.
For those who look forward to a seasonal skate, Skate Manchester's family-friendly covered ice rink will once again take up its usual spot in Cathedral Gardens where skaters can skate around a beautiful Christmas tree and enjoy twinkling lights, the smell of gingerbread, and Christmas songs on repeat.
New for 2022, Festive Sundays will see the city's streets and squares filled with some extra special not-to-be-missed Manchester Christmas magic as roaming puppets, supersized penguins and illuminated bands take to the city's main shopping streets, every Sunday from 13 November - 18 December.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG4092 - With over 220 stalls across nine sites throughout the city centre, this year's Christmas Markets are set to bring some much-needed festive cheer to the city's streets and squares in the run-up to Christmas.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRG8XN - The Winter Gardens is a large entertainment complex in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which includes a theatre, ballroom and conference facilities. Opened in 1878, it is a Grade II* listed building, operated by Blackpool Entertainment Company Limited on behalf of Blackpool Council, which purchased the property from Leisure Parcs Ltd as part of a ?40 million deal in 2010.
The Winter Gardens has hosted the annual Trades Union Congress, the Conservative Party Conference, Labour Party Conference, and the twice-annual Liberal Democrat Conference. The venue's owners claim that every Prime Minister since World War II has addressed an audience at the venue.
It has also hosted the Blackpool Dance Festival since its inception in 1920, and the World Matchplay darts tournament since 1994. The annual dance competitions Miss Dance of Great Britain and Dance Master UK are hosted there annually.
The Winter Gardens is in Blackpool's town centre, about 250 metres from the sea front. The complex occupies most of its block, a roughly square footprint with sides about 200 metres in length. The two north-facing corners of the block are not taken up by the Gardens buildings themselves, however, but by shops and restaurants. The northwest corner is completely separated by a road serving the stage door of the theatres. The west face also accommodates a few small shops with the same architectural styling as the main building. The complex is bounded by roads on all sides ? Church Street, Leopold Grove, Adelaide Street and Coronation Street

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JEKPJY - How Wheat Shortage Is Sparking a Global Food Crisis
While climate change heightens competition for the already limited resources, many non-climate stressors are also putting immense pressure on our food system. Recently, all eyes are on the wheat shortage, as experts warn it could spark a global food crisis. The world's wheat supply is under immense pressure as the conflict in Ukraine as well as increasingly devastating weather events threaten production around the world. What sparked the issue and how are countries dealing with the shortage?
Why Is Everyone So Concerned About Wheat?
Following corn and soybeans, wheat is the third most common and widespread crop. As one of the oldest, cheapest, and most versatile grains, it remains today a critical component of food security.
This nutritious grain is essential in ensuring a sustainable global food supply for current and future generations. For centuries, wheat has been a staple ingredient not only in industrialised nations but especially in developing countries. Today, over 80% of the world's wheat is used for flour.
Despite being so widespread around the world, wheat production is in the hands of just a few countries. A staggering 86% of global wheat exports come from only seven countries, while just three of them hold nearly 68% of the world's wheat reserves, with some of the world's most vulnerable and impoverished countries relying on them for more than half of their wheat imports.
wheat shortage
Both Ukraine and Russia are key players in the highly concentrated international wheat market. Described by many as the breadbaskets for much of the world, these two nations alone account for just under 30% of the world's wheat exports. Most of the wheat they produce is sent to North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, with countries like Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Yemen among the largest importers. In 2020, Russia and Ukraine also contributed 20% to the total food commodities procured by the Wor

UKHSA warns of lower levels of natural immunity to flu this year and increased coronavirus (COVID-19) circulation
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging everyone eligible for a free flu vaccine and a COVID-19 booster to take up the offer as soon as possible ahead of what could be a difficult winter with respiratory viruses circulating widely.
International surveillance shows that H3N2 ? a subtype of influenza type A ? is currently the most-commonly detected flu virus worldwide. H3N2 has recently caused waves of infection in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia, which has also experienced flu circulating earlier than usual in their winter season.
This H3N2 strain circulated in the UK last winter but was held largely in check by COVID-19 restrictions when people mixed a lot less and worked from home. This helped to protect people from catching flu but has also led to lower levels of natural immunity to this strain building up within the population.
There was record uptake of the flu jab in people aged 65 and over in 2021 and 2022 (82%), though there was lower uptake among people in clinical risk groups and pregnant women and these groups are particularly encouraged to come forward this year.
All primary school children and some secondary school children are eligible for the flu nasal spray this year, which is usually given at school. GP surgeries are also inviting children aged 2 and 3 years old (age on 31 August) for this nasal spray vaccination at their practices.
Most young children will not have encountered flu yet. This means they will not have built up any natural immunity to this virus, so it is particularly important for them to take up the flu vaccine this year.
In addition to the predicted flu wave, we have early indications that COVID-19 rates are beginning to rise ahead of winter, increasing the threat to people's health

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T328 - The Trust was formed in 2017 by like-minded leaders of local primary and secondary schools in Warrington along with Priestley College.
Our intention was to work collaboratively to improve outcomes for children and young people in the Warrington area and this collective responsibility is one we maintain to this day.
Our mission is to serve, challenge and empower the educational community. We enact our mission by providing highly effective services to our academies, supporting strong leadership, investing in the workforce and inspiring our children and young people.
All of our work is underpinned by a set of core values, they are:
Inclusivity and social justice
Educational excellence
Collaboration and interdependence
Challenge and service
Care and sustainability
Celebrating difference
These values inform everything we do as a trust and all of our services and working practices are designed around these concepts.
TCAT is a unique trust, being the first in the country to include primary and secondary academies together with a sixth form college.
TCAT also includes a Church of England High School, Sir Thomas Boteler, whose faith foundation is assured through representation from the Dioceses of Chester and Liverpool.
As an inclusive MAT with a strong moral purpose we are committed to providing an environment and education where every young person is nurtured, challenged and inspired to achieve the very best for themselves and their communities. Young people are at the heart of everything we do.
There are currently 10 academies within the trust including four primary academies, three with nurseries, five secondary academies and a sixth form college.
We have close to 8,000 children and young people in our care along with around 1,000 staff.
This may seem like a huge number of people, however we pride ourselves on maintaining an intimacy within this which is built upon positive and professional relationships.

Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG is a German international discount supermarket chain that operates over 10,000 stores across Europe and the United States. Headquartered in Neckarsulm, Baden-W?rttemberg, the company belongs to the Schwarz Group, which also operates the hypermarket chain Kaufland.
Lidl opened its first UK store in 1994. Since then, Lidl UK has grown consistently, and today has over 800 stores. While it is still a small player in the United Kingdom, with a grocery market share of less than 5%, its importance, along with that of continental, no-frills competitor Aldi is growing, with half of the shoppers in the United Kingdom visiting Aldi or Lidl over Christmas 2014.
The Lidl operation in the United Kingdom took a different approach than in Germany, with a focus on marketing and public relations, and providing employee benefits not required by law, including paying the independently verified living wage and offering a staff discount. Upmarket products were introduced, especially in the lead-up to Christmas. This required significant investment in marketing to produce sales growth but had an effect on Lidl's logistical operation and pressure on profits. Ronny Gottschlich, who had run Lidl UK for the six years to 2016, was responsible for this approach, which led to friction with head office, due to the cost involved. In September 2016, Gottschlich unexpectedly left and was replaced by the Austrian sales and operations director, German-national Christian H??rtnagel. Lidl continued to have ambitious investment plans in the United Kingdom, ultimately doubling the number of stores to 1,500. In the financial year of 2015, Lidl Great Britain's revenue from its over 630 stores throughout Britain was ?4.7 billion

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ADR2D3 - If you're looking for some festive cheer, Manchester plays host to one of the biggest and best Christmas Sehensw?rdigkeiten outside of Germany, with more than 300 wooden chalets spread across 10 different locations throughout the city.
Originally introduced to the city in 1999, the Christmas markets have grown bigger and better each year, attracting Europe's finest street food vendors and crafters. It's a great place to buy Yuletide gifts, such as fine jewellery, handcrafted leather bags and artisan soaps. Your taste buds will also be tantalised with so many wide ranging food options on offer, including things like German bratwurst, hog roast, Spanish paella and Dutch pancakes. Yum!
Thought Christmas markets were just for December? This year the Christmas Markets will open in November in Manchester city centre, so there's plenty of time to don your best Christmas jumper, drink mulled wine and chow down on pretzels.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNE9 - A credit union is a member-owned nonprofit cooperative financial institution.
Credit unions may offer financial services as commercial banks such as share accounts (savings accounts), share draft accounts (cheque accounts), credit cards, credit, share term certificates (certificates of deposit), and online banking. Normally, only a member of a credit union may deposit or borrow money. In several African countries, credit unions are commonly referred to as SACCOs (Savings and Credit Co-Operatives).
Worldwide, credit union systems vary significantly in their total assets and average institution asset size, ranging from volunteer operations with a handful of members to institutions with hundreds of thousands of members and assets worth billions of US dollars. In 2018, the number of members in credit unions worldwide was 375 million, with over 100 million members having been added since 2016.
Leading up to the financial crisis of 2007?2008, commercial banks engaged in approximately five times more subprime lending relative to credit unions and were two and a half times more likely to fail during the crisis. American credit unions more than doubled lending to small businesses between 2008 and 2016, from $30 billion to $60 billion, while lending to small businesses overall during the same period declined by around $100 billion. In the US, public trust in credit unions stands at 60%, compared to 30% for big banks. Furthermore, small businesses are 80% more likely to be satisfied by a credit union than with a big bank.
Natural-person credit unions (also called retail credit unions or consumer credit unions) serve individuals, as distinguished from corporate credit unions, which serve other credit unions

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98RH - The Refuge Assurance Company Ltd. was a life insurance and pensions company based in England. It was founded by James Proctor and George Robins in Dukinfield, Cheshire in 1858. The company was originally known by the unwieldy name of the Refuge Friend in Deed Life Assurance and Sick Fund Friendly Society.
From 1895 until 1987, its head office was the magnificent Grade II* listed, Refuge Assurance Building on Oxford Street in central Manchester, now used as the Principal Hotel. In 1987, the company decided to move out of the city centre to new, purpose-built, offices in the grounds of Fulshaw Hall in Wilmslow, around 12 miles south of the old Refuge Building. In October 1996, the Refuge Assurance Company merged with United Friendly to form the United Assurance Group (UAG).
After disappointing performances following the merger, the United Assurance Group was first approached by Britannic Assurance in November 1999, and then by Royal London Mutual Insurance Society in February 2000. Following successful talks, Royal London took over UAG for ?1.6 billion.
The Refuge Assurance Building, Manchester, on Oxford Road, was the company's head office between 1895 and 1987

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN94 - Rhubarb forcers are bell-shaped pots with a lidded opening at the top, used to cover rhubarb to limit photosynthesis. They encourage the plant to grow early in the season and also to produce blanched stems. The pots are placed over two- to three-year-old rhubarb crowns during winter or very early spring. Once shoots appear the lid is taken off, causing them to grow towards the light.
Around 18 inches (46 cm) high and 14 inches (36 cm) wide without the lid, they are traditionally made of terracotta but can be as simple as an upside down plastic bucket

Above the grand central entranceway is an interesting mock Tudor-style frontage which greets the visitor. Built in 1800 some fate must have befallen this mighty inn as it was rebuilt in 1875. At the turn of the century it served as a halt for horse-drawn buses.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ5MJ - The medieval Glasgow Cross was located on the road between High Street and Saltgait. Its modern replacement was built to the south-east of the original location to aid traffic. The town's tron was placed on the steeple of the town house in the 1550s. The Tron Steeple, as it became known, still stands in Glasgow Cross, one of the few remaining pre-Victorian buildings in Glasgow.
The area now known as 'Merchant City' was developed from the 1750s onwards. Residences and warehouses of the wealthy merchant tobacco lords (who prospered in shipping and, amongst other things, tobacco, sugar and tea) were built in the area. The district west of the High Street formed the historic backbone of the city, the development of what is now known as with wide, straight streets, vistas, and squares, marked the beginning of a process of aspirational residential movement westwards that would continue throughout the 19th century and into the 20th with the development of Blythswood Hill, Hillhead and the West End of Glasgow.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWG0 - Tower Bridge is a bridge in London. It crosses the River Thames near the Tower of London. The north side of the bridge is Tower Hill, and the south side of the bridge comes down into Bermondsey, robbie, an area in Southwark. It is far more visible than London Bridge, which people often mistake it for. If large boats need to sail under Tower Bridge, the two halves of the bridge lift up to let it under. Many tourists go to London to see the Tower Bridge.
When it was first built, Tower Bridge was the bridge. Bascule is the French word for a see-saw. The bascules are the surfaces raised to allow tall ships to pass through: this happens about 900 times per year. The bridge's deck can be raised to 83deg from the horizontal. Tower Bridge is one of London's most famous sights.
The City of London Corporation held a competition for the design in 1876. Over 50 designs were entered, and in 1884 Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry's design was chosen.
Workers began to build the Tower Bridge in April 1886 and the bridge was opened in 30 June 1894.
In June 2012, the bridge was highlighted on the route of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames

A great track from the London Conversations album. this time of year always reminds me of it with all the snowdrops in the hedgerows. Very uplifting that Easter and warmer, longer days just around the corner.
Saint Etienne are an English electronic music band from London, formed in 1990. The band consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. They are named of course after the French football team AS Saint-\u00c9tienne
Saint Etienne were associated with the 'indie dance' genre in the early 1990s. Their typical approach was to combine sonic elements of the dance-pop that emerged in the wake of the so-called Second Summer of Love (e.g. samples and digitally synthesized sounds) with an emphasis on songwriting involving romantic and introspective themes more commonly associated with traditional British pop and rock music.
Early work demonstrated the influence of '60s soul, '70s dub and rock as well as '80s dance music, giving them a broad palette of sounds and a reputation for eclecticism. Years later, The Times wrote that they 'deftly fused the grooviness of Swinging Sixties London with a post-acid house backbeat'. Their first two albums, Foxbase Alpha and So Tough feature sounds chiefly associated with house music, such as standard TR-909 drum patterns and Italo house piano riffs mixed with original sounds, notable by the use of found dialogue, sampled from 1960s British realist cinema. Some of these earlier recordings included skits by (Brass Eye) satirist Chris Morris.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5890756904 - 'The road is named after the lost River Dene, which may have flowed along the Hanging Ditch connecting the River Irk to the River Irwell, at the northern end of Deansgate. ('gate' derives from the Norse gata, meaning way).
It begins now at Victoria Street but that street was a 19th-century creation: at the time the east side of Deansgate was occupied by Victoria Buildings (built by Manchester Corporation in 1876 but ruined during a bomb raid in December 1940 during the Second World War) on a triangular site (later a statue of Oliver Cromwell was placed at the northern corner commemorating Manchester's support for Parliament in the English Civil War). The statue was a gift to the city by Mrs. Abel Heywood in memory of her first husband Thomas Goadsby
it was the first large statue of Cromwell to be raised in the open anywhere in England.
At the northern end of Deansgate it becomes Victoria Street, on which lies Manchester Cathedral, and at the southern end is Deansgate railway station. At this point Deansgate connects with Bridgewater Viaduct and Chester Road (Whitworth Street West also meets it at this point). The section to the south of Peter Street was until the end of the 18th century known as Aldport Street (Aldport being the former name of the Castlefield area once separate from medieval Manchester).
The northern end of the street used to adjoin a retail area known as The Shambles. This was badly damaged in the IRA bombing in 1996. The area was eventually redeveloped and is home to several new buildings, including No. 1 Deansgate and the Manchester branch of Harvey Nichols.
Other recent additions to the Deansgate area include the Royal Bank of Scotland building, the Beetham Tower, and the redevelopment of the Great Northern Warehouse. These stand in contrast with historic buildings, such as the John Rylands Library and the Barton Arcade shopping mall. The disused Manchester and Salford Junction canal runs directly underneath Deansgate and below the Great Northern Warehouse.

What a nice feelgood effect this track has on me, even when its minus something outside on the cobbles!
British Sea Power's Yan and Hamilton Wilkinson are brothers and were school friends with Matthew Wood in Kendal, Cumbria England. They are based in Brighton where BSP amassed a large following their own club night called 'Club Sea Power'. Its numerous support acts and occasional fashion show went down well in Brighton.
'The Decline of British Sea Power', the band's first album, was released in June 2003 to critical acclaim. Their tours often include unusual venues such as the Scillonian Club on the Isles of Scilly, Grasmere Village Hall, the St. John Boste Social Club in Kendal and Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall. They have been compared with The Cure and Joy Division.
This track is taken from 'Open Season', the second album. Well worth a listen.
------------------------
Grappenhall is a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is situated along the Bridgewater Canal, and forms one of the principal settlements of Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish. According to the 2001 UK census, the population of the entire civil parish was 9,377.
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale, ('the Groping Place') which states it to be worth five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs (The Parr Arms and The Ram's Head), Grappenhall Hall residential School and St. Wilfrids Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is also found north of the centre of the village.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the Victorian cobbled centre of Grappenhall. It is also the birthplace of actor Tim Curry. Here Church lane is pictured from the west.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA0RPY - A polling place or polling station is where voters cast their ballots in elections.
The phrase polling station is also used in American English and in British English, although polling place is the building and polling station is the specific room (or part of a room) where voters cast their votes. A polling place can contain one or more polling stations.
Since elections generally take place over a one- or two-day span on a periodic basis, often annual or longer, polling places are usually located in facilities used for other purposes, such as schools, churches, sports halls, local government offices, or even private homes, and may each serve a similar number of people. The area may be known as a ward, precinct, polling district or constituency. The polling place is staffed by officials (who may be called election judges, returning officers or other titles) who monitor the voting procedures and assist voters with the election process. Scrutineers (or poll-watchers) are independent or partisan observers who attend the poll to ensure the impartiality of the process.
The word poll means scalp or head. When votes were taken by gathering people together and counting heads, the place where this was done (sometimes an open field) was called the polls

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4433438874 - 'One of my favourite perenials from the family Liliaceae. A gift from Iran and Turkey where the Ottamans first started cultivation for sale. In Turkish the tulip is called Lale
The Tulip is native to the old world, southern europe right across to China and central asia. A helpful and knowledgable chap in my local florests in Knutsford road told me that the most varied ones grow in the Hindu Kush and on the steppes of Kazakhstan (fictional home of Sacha Baron Cohen's character Borat). He also told me that most tulips are derived from 'Tulipa gesneriana'. In retrospect I wonder if my other florist near the MSCC cateliver bridge '2lips' (geddit? www.2lipsflorists.co.uk/ ), would have been as informative.
Plants are perennials from bulbs and typically have two to six leaves. The cup shaped flowers typically have three petals and three sepals, which are most often termed 'tepals' because they are nearly indestinguishable.
The flowers have six stamens (yellow here) and the overies are three lobed. How nature likes threes eh?
Europians were taken by the spring flowers. Around 1634 to 1637, the early enthusiasm for the new tulips triggered a speculative frenzy now known as the 'tulip mania'. The tulip bulbs were then considered a form of currency. Not so far away from our own times when the 'dot com' boom and sub-prime lending, confirms we have actually not come that far from those heady days of dutch speculators over 450 years ago.
My advice, 'Buy Tulips' :-)

Taken here between Christmas and New Year on the night of Hogmanay, the snow and ice of December give it a nice lightness, even at dusk. This is the calm before the storm as the party starts in Princes St and the gardens as the stage fires up to welcome in the new years celebrations. 2009 2010 2011 2012. Everyone needs a street party ticket and a wristband to enter the city arena area, unlike many years ago when it was a bit more easy going. Now there is a midnight torchlight procession from Parliament Square via the historic Lothian Edinburgh Royal Mile to the Son et Lumi\u00e9re and fireworks finale on Calton Hill. On Edinburg new years day the the loony dook is the place to take a swim at South Queensferry in the river Forth in the shadow of the Forth Railway Bridge over to Fife.
Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base, with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since.
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval fortifications were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The notable exception is St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, which dates from the early 12th century. Among other significant buildings of the castle are the Royal Palace, and the early-16th-century Great Hall. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial, and National War Museum of Scotland.

Lymm Cross is in the village of Lymm, Cheshire, England. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
The cross dates from the early to the middle 17th century and it was restored in 1897. It is constructed of sandstone and stands on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone. Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials.
Above the cross is an extension which carries a stone ball and an ornate weather vane. On the east, south and west gables are bronze sundials of 1897 carrying the inscriptions We are a Shadow, Save Time and Think of the Last

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RKGHC1 - This image shows electronic public transport information displays in the city centre of Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The illuminated boards present service disruption and diversion messages in the German language, informing passengers about road closures, replacement stops, and changes to bus and tram services. The signage includes references to alternative stops and temporary arrangements, along with a public transport website address, highlighting the role of real-time digital communication in urban mobility.
Public transport networks in German cities rely heavily on clear, centralised passenger information, particularly during planned works, street closures, or service disruptions. Electronic display boards such as these are commonly positioned at major stops and interchange points, providing up-to-date guidance to commuters, residents, and visitors. The surrounding urban setting, with bare winter trees and historic architecture visible in the background, places the scene firmly within a European city-centre context.
The image conveys themes of urban transport management, passenger communication, and the practical realities of maintaining public infrastructure in busy cities. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to public transport systems, travel disruption, urban mobility, European cities, infrastructure management, and the everyday experience of commuting in Germany.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ADR2CY - If you're looking for some festive cheer, Manchester plays host to one of the biggest and best Christmas Sehensw?rdigkeiten outside of Germany, with more than 300 wooden chalets spread across 10 different locations throughout the city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0NA2 - A winter dusk view from The Vennel, a historic stepped alleyway off Browns Place in Edinburgh's Old Town, photographed at Edinburgh EH1 2HU. The image looks uphill towards Edinburgh Castle, dramatically positioned on its volcanic rock and silhouetted against a dark, moody evening sky. Light snow dusts the stone steps and surrounding rooftops, enhancing the sense of seasonal stillness and historic atmosphere.
The Vennel is one of Edinburgh's most distinctive medieval routes, its narrow stepped form reflecting the city's dense, vertical urban development that evolved within the constraints of defensive walls and steep terrain. Such passages once connected residential areas, workshops and places of worship, forming part of the everyday circulation of life in Scotland's capital for centuries.
The warm glow of traditional street lamps contrasts with the cold tones of the snow and sky, creating a scene often associated with romantic, literary and cinematic depictions of Edinburgh. Views of Edinburgh Castle from the Old Town are among the most iconic in Scotland, symbolising national history, royal power and the city's role as a centre of culture, governance and heritage.
Photographed in low light at dusk, the image captures Edinburgh as both a living city and a preserved historic environment, blending medieval architecture, winter weather and atmospheric lighting. The scene holds strong editorial appeal for themes of Scottish heritage, winter travel, historic European cities, romantic urban landscapes and cultural tourism, offering a timeless portrayal of Edinburgh's enduring character.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEYABR - A monochrome close-up image showing a pair of hands carefully resetting a wristwatch by turning the crown, illustrating the seasonal clock change associated with daylight saving time in the United Kingdom. The watch face is sharply in focus, with the minute and hour hands clearly visible, while the surrounding hands and strap fall into softer tones. Selective colour highlights a small detail on the dial, drawing attention to the precise mechanism of timekeeping within an otherwise subdued black-and-white composition.
In the UK, clocks are adjusted twice each year, moving forward by one hour in March to begin British Summer Time and moving back again in October to return to Greenwich Mean Time. This simple domestic action is a familiar ritual for millions of people, marking the transition between darker winter mornings and longer summer evenings, and later the return to shorter days. The act of manually adjusting a watch reinforces the persistence of analogue habits in an increasingly automated and digital world.
The image conveys themes of routine, seasonal change and human interaction with time. The close framing emphasises touch, precision and concentration, transforming a mundane task into a symbolic moment that reflects wider social rhythms governed by clocks and calendars. The contrast between old-fashioned mechanical adjustment and contemporary life adds conceptual depth, making the photograph suitable for illustrating articles about time change, productivity, sleep patterns, work schedules and the impact of daylight saving on daily life.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering daylight saving time, British Summer Time, seasonal routines, time management and lifestyle topics, as well as commercial applications requiring conceptual imagery about time, change, schedules, organisation and the human relationship with clocks and timekeeping.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX1N - A festive winter dusk scene at the Edinburgh Christmas fair in Princes Street Gardens, showing brightly illuminated amusement rides glowing against a deep blue evening sky in the heart of Scotland's capital city. The image features a traditional helter skelter tower and a swing carousel decorated with red, white and warm golden lights, creating a strong visual contrast with the surrounding darkness and bare winter trees. The lights spill across the gardens, reflecting the lively atmosphere of Edinburgh's annual winter festival.
In the background, historic city centre buildings along Princes Street rise above the gardens, anchoring the fair firmly within Edinburgh's urban landscape. The location, close to the former Jenners department store, is one of the city's most recognisable public spaces and becomes a focal point each winter for seasonal events, attracting residents and tourists alike. Blurred figures moving through the scene suggest crowds in motion, reinforcing the sense of energy, cold-weather activity and festive excitement typical of the Christmas period.
Princes Street Gardens sits between Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town and regularly hosts major civic celebrations. During the winter months it is transformed into a temporary amusement park and Christmas attraction, symbolising the city's role as a cultural and tourism destination during the festive season. The combination of fairground rides, historic architecture, winter trees and twilight lighting conveys themes of celebration, seasonal leisure, urban life and tourism in a European capital city.
This image is well suited for editorial use relating to Christmas, winter festivals, city tourism, seasonal events, public celebrations and Scottish urban life, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric winter imagery from a major UK city.
