Daniels, who happened upon the test yesterday, said the sight of the water filling the 1-acre pool was awe-inspiring after years of planning and building.
Construction workers from around the site paused to look and listen during the tests as engineers below the memorial plaza monitored and adjusted the 16 pumps that will circulate 480,000 gallons of recycled water.
During the design phase of the memorial, there were concerns that the fountains might be too loud. But Daniels said the sound of the cascading water yesterday created a nice, peaceful background, like the sound of the ocean.
It's perfect. It's not overwhelming at all, Daniels said.
A second fountain over the footprint of the south tower will be ready for testing later this year. A spokesman for the Port Authority, which is overseeing construction of the $500 million memorial, said yesterday's trial run went very well.
The two fountains together make up the nation's largest manmade waterfalls, and are at the heart of the design of the memorial, called Reflecting Absence.
Paula Berry, a 9/11 family member who served on the 13-member jury that picked the memorial design by Michael Arad, was ecstatic about the test run.
The presence of water is incredibly important at the memorial, said Berry. When you think of the memorial's name, Reflecting Absence, you have to have the means to reflect and the water plays that role.
But Berry said the sound of the water rushing over the sides of the fountains could very well be one of the most lasting impressions visitors take away.
Yesterday's tests lasted a few hours, and will be repeated as needed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F1J572 - Pan Am Flight 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit, via London and New York, that was destroyed by a terrorist bomb on Wednesday, 21 December 1988, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew on board, in what became known as the Lockerbie bombing. Large sections of the aircraft crashed onto residential areas of Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 11 more people on the ground.
Following a three-year joint investigation by Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, arrest warrants were issued for two Libyan nationals in November 1991. In 1999, Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi handed over the two men for trial at Camp Zeist, Netherlands after protracted negotiations and UN sanctions. In 2001, Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was jailed for life after being found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing. In August 2009, he was released by the Scottish Government on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He died in May 2012, remaining the only person to be convicted for the attack. He had continually protested his innocence.
In 2003, Gaddafi accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing and paid compensation to the families of the victims, although he maintained that he had never given the order for the attack. During the Libyan Civil War, in 2011, a former government official claimed that the Libyan leader had personally ordered the bombing. Numerous conspiracy theories have developed regarding responsibility for the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103.

Courses offered by the college include GCSEs, NVQs, BTECs, Diplomas, Apprenticeships and Access courses. Walsall College's sixth form department, V6 is a vocational sixth form for young people focussing on vocational skills and qualification
however it does not offer A Levels or academic study.
Walsall College also offers its vocational courses through a series of academies, in partnership with businesses including Microsoft, Apple, Francesco Group and Roland DG. The academies include a gym, hair and beauty salon and restaurant. All facilities are staffed by students.

The present Early English Gothic chancel was built late in the 12th or early in the 13th century. The tower has a saddleback roof and may have been built in the 13th or 14th century. The present nave was built in 1793 and has a west gallery that was added in 1834.
St. Mary's is now part of the Cherwell Valley Benefice along with five other ecclesiastical parishes: Fritwell, Lower Heyford, Somerton, Souldern and Upper Heyford.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DRH8BA - St Luke's Church, Liverpool, is a former Anglican parish church, which is now a ruin. It stands on the corner of Berry Street and Leece Street, looking down the length of Bold Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, England.
The church was built between 1811 and 1832, and was designed by John Foster, senior and John Foster, junior, father and son who were successive surveyors for the municipal Corporation of Liverpool. In addition to being a parish church, it was also intended to be used as a venue for ceremonial worship by the Corporation, and as a concert hall. It was badly damaged during the Liverpool Blitz in 1941, and remains as a roofless shell. It now stands as a memorial to those who were lost in the war, and is also a venue for exhibitions and events. The church, and the surrounding walls, gates and railings are protected as Grade II* listed buildings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXGCM - The Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside of London. It is a vital component of Liverpool's UNESCO designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City and the docking complex.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0XDWK - The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is an 18th-century neoclassical triumphal arch in Berlin, and one of the best-known landmarks of Germany. It is built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel.
It is located in the western part of the city centre of Berlin, at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstra??e, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. One block to the north stands the Reichstag building. The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees, which formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs.
It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. Having suffered considerable damage in World War II, the Brandenburg Gate was fully restored from 2000 to 2002 by the Stiftung Denkmalschutz Berlin (Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation).
During the post-war Partition of Germany, the gate was isolated and inaccessible immediately next to the Berlin Wall, and the area around the gate was featured most prominently in the media coverage of the tearing down of the wall in 1989.
Throughout its existence, the Brandenburg Gate was often a site for major historical events and is today considered a symbol of the tumultuous history of Europe and Germany, but also of European unity and peace.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BK4F7C - Quarry Bank Mill (also known as Styal Mill) in Styal, Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. Built in 1784, the mill is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and inspired the 2013 television series The Mill. It was established by Samuel Greg. The mill was notable for the innovative approach to labour relations, largely as a result of the work of Greg's wife, Hannah Lightbody.
Samuel Greg leased land at Quarrell Hole on Pownall Fee from Lord Stamford, who imposed a condition that 'none of the surrounding trees should be pruned, felled or lopped??
maintaining the woodland character of the area. The factory was built in 1784 by Greg to spin cotton. When Greg retired in 1832 it was the largest such business in the United Kingdom. The water-powered Georgian mill still produces cotton calico. The Gregs were careful and pragmatic, paternalistic millowners, and the mill was expanded and changed throughout its history. When Greg's son, Robert Hyde Greg, took over the business, he introduced weaving. Samuel Greg died in 1834.

In his book England's Thousand Best Churches, Simon Jenkins begins his description of St Wulfram's: Here is the finest steeple in England
It is believed that a church stood on the site long before Norman times, but of the original Saxon church probably only a few stones, near the organ loft, remain. The church was totally altered by the Normans and the remains of their church may still be seen in the nave. From its foundation until the 18th century, it was the only church in the town, helping to explain its size in comparison with the churches at nearby Stamford. Although there were a number of religious cells in Grantham, including a Franciscan Friary, the Grey Friars, west of the market place, the wealth of the medieval wool trade was channelled into St Wulfram's Church.
The north aisle arcades, except for the two west bays, date from before 1180. The original Norman church was ruined by fire when it was hit by lightning in 1222. The north aisle was rebuilt in about 1250. In 1280 the church expanded westwards over what was the market-place. The huge piers in the west end of the church have many 13th-century mason's marks, as do the spiral stairs to the belfry. In 1450 the north aisle was extended, and some time after 1496 St Katherine's Chapel was added by the Hall family. In 1550 the south aisle was lengthened and the Lady Chapel was built.
The church was restored in 1866-67 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Of interest are window frames from different periods, the use of ballflower ornament and the crypt chapel. The north porch was built to house relics of St Wulfram (possibly an arm bone), and the chained library occupies a room over the south porch which was once a priests' living room.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4653594686 - 'This is an image taken in the first floor historic reading room of the Manchester University John Rylands library. This serves as the special Collections section of the John Rylands University Library (JRUL). It is a remarkable victorian gothic building right in the heart of the city's shopping district Deansgate.
The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Mrs Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her late husband, John Rylands. The collections include medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing, including the Gutenberg Bible, and the personal papers of notable local figures such as Elizabeth Gaskell and chemist John Dalton.
Enriqueta Rylands purchased a site on Deansgate, at the heart of Manchester city centre, in 1889 for her planned memorial library and commissioned a design from architect Basil Champneys. Mrs Rylands had originally intended the library as a principally theological collection and the building, which is a very fine example of Victorian Gothic, has much of the appearance of a church, although the actual concept was of an Oxford college library on a larger scale.
The core of the library was formed around the collection of 40,000 books including many rarities assembled by George John Spencer, which Mrs Rylands purchased in 1892. The library was finally opened to readers on 1 January 1900. It was illuminated internally by electricity (rather than gas which was more common at the time). The use of electricity was still in its early stages, the supply had to be generated on-site. This took some years to achieve due to the inexperience of local contractors, but the library became one of the first public buildings in Manchester to be lit by electricity and continued to generate its own supply until 1950.
Basil Champneys was given the rare honour of speaking about the building at a general meeting of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 1912. The library was granted listed building status on 25 January 1952, which was upgraded to Grade I on 6 June 1994.
In the Rylands Gallery on the lower floor, you can see some of the most important items from the Library's collections including magnificent medieval manuscripts and examples of the earliest books ever printed. The gallery is organized around seven themes. Faiths, History of the Bible, Beautiful Books, Science, World Literatures, Everyday Life and Manchester.
It is one of Manchester's building gems and inside more resembles a cathedral than a library. Marble statues of Enriqueta and John Rylands watch over the readers from either end of the room. If you are in the city, make an excuse to spend some time to drink in the history.

A pig is commemorated on the west wall of the tower, this could be the evidence or the start of the medieval urban myth. That would certainley be an intelligent pig that would not be eaten in just one sitting!
The Domesday Book in 1086 records that a church existed here at the time of the Norman conquest . The oldest part of the present church dates from the early 14th century. An inscription in the church commemorates King Oswald of Northumbria, a prominent Christian, who is said to have been killed here in 642.
Remains on the site ate thought to go back even further. The current church occupies the site of an ancient Druidical altar and pre-Christian temple. Excavations beneath this Chancel in 1828 revealed 3 gigantic skeletons supporting these theories.
Pictured here is the chancel, formed from a panorama of four seperate images joined. The main body of the church and its wooden nave is currently under threat from Death Watch Beatle. In late april teh local newspaper, the Warrington Guardian reported the following:
'The oak beams of the nave roof at the Winwick church have been gnawed at by death watch beetles, a wood-boring insect, which has led to water seeping into the Legh Chapel and major structural problems in Gerrard Chapel.
The nave has been closed since January after builders carried out maintenance on ceiling tiles and discovered the delapidated beams. Wardens must now apply to English Heritage for a grant by June if they are to get funding during 2010 to resolve the problem.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4608369781 - 'Dave and Sarah's shop is the latest business to earn a decent crust in Crewe. It was Officially opened by Councillor Margaret Simon, who is Mayor for Cheshire East. This is the first francise for the Brampton Pie Company outside Cambridgeshire.
Slightly cheesily at the official opening Councillor Simon said, \u201cIt\u2019s a great vote of confidence that Brampton\u2019s has chosen to set up in Crewe and can only add to the town\u2019s economic growth. I have also become a personal fan and regularly pop in for a pie at lunchtime, as they are located irresistibly close to Crewe\u2019s Municipal Buildings.\u201d I did not check with Dave and Sarah how many pies had in fact been purchased / consumed by the local elected elite, when I popped in to say hello to my old work mate.
Crewe is in fact slightly south of what I would probably term 'Pie Central' in the UK, Wigan. While justly famous for its 1970's Northern Soul 'Wigan casino' pies are a large slice of the Wigan economy.
The annual World Pie Eating Championship is usually held at Harry's Bar on Wallgate, Wigan. The competition has been held since 1992. In 2006, due to relentless pressure from the Vegetarian Society a vegetarian version was added.
In the 2006 competition, the meat and potato pies were all 12 cm (5 in) in diameter with a depth of 3.5 cm (1.5 in). In the separate vegetarian contest, the pies were 10 cm (4 in) by 3 cm (1.2 in).[3]
In the 2007 competition, entries included a competitor's dog, Charlie, who had eaten 20 pies and damaged a further 10 the night before the competition, nearly jeopardising the event.

Fred Wyatt, a 61-year-old warehouse packer won the 2008 Championship, which was broadcast live on the internet by pay-per-view. In 2009
Barry Rigby, a warehouseman won, eating a pie in a record 45 seconds.
Controversy was caused in 2005 when pies were imported (out of the Wigan area) from nearby Farnworth, Bolton and local Wigan pies were sidelined, resulting in a four-man strong protest. A similar situation arose in 2009, with pies being sourced from Adlington.
More controversy was caused in 2006 when the competition was changed (to meet government healthy-eating guidelines) from the number of pies consumed in a given time, to the fastest time to consume a single pie.
Wiganers are proud to be called pie-eaters, but the nickname is not thought to be because of their appetite for the delicacy. The name is said to date from the 1926 General Strike when Wigan miners were starved back to work before their counterparts in surrounding towns and were forced to eat 'humble pie'.

Ian Curtis (Ian Kevin Curtis to be precise) was songwriter and lyricist of the Manchester band Joy Division.
I was lucky enough to see Joy Division a couple of times. Once at the manchester Free Trade Hall 25/06/1979, with Fashion supporting Salford Punk Poet John Cooper Clarke. Secondly at the Factory / PSV / Russel club in Hulme, Manchester 28/09/1979. The latter time on a bill with The Teardrop Explodes (we were too late to see Foreign Press), before they were signed and had just released the Sleeping Gas EP on Zoo records.
I remember that friday night well as me and my pal from school David Hague were dropped off by his brother Nick in his nippy red leather seated Mazda. This was to be totalled some weeks later in Sheffield with over a hundred charges being cooked up by the south Yorkshire police. As you would expect the case was chucked out! But thats another story as they say.
The first time I saw Ian Curtis I was amazed at the power he had. I like everyone else it seemed at the FTH was drawn down to the stage to look at this man and his unique dancing style. Similar to an epileptic Northern Soul dancer. To this day I have not witnessed a vocalist with those same powers. He and his writing was special, dark, urban.
He explained the motivation as 'Instead of just singing about something you could show it as well, put it over in the way that it is, if you were totally involved in what you were doing'.
Songs like 'Transmission', 'Shes Lost Control again' and Shadowplay encapsulated Manchester and the late 1970's.
In the early hours of 18 May 1980, on the eve of a first tour in America, Curtis hanged himself in the kitchen of his house in Macclesfield. He had just viewed Werner Herzog's film 'Stroszek' and listened to Iggy Pop's 'The Idiot'. At the time of his death, his health was failing as a result of the epilepsy and attempting to balance his musical ambitions with his marriage, which was foundering in the aftermath of his affair with journalist Annik Honor\u00e9. His wife Deborah found his body the next morning.
Curtis's memorial stone, which is inscribed with 'Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80' and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' (the single released just before his death), was stolen in July 2008 from the grounds of Macclesfield Cemetery. The missing memorial stone was later replaced by a new one shown here.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4589609737 - 'Saltaire United Reformed Church is one of the UK's most precious Victorian architectural gems. The church was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1859 near Shipley along from Bradford, West Yorkshire. Its style is Italianate religious architecture. It has been described as a classic 'Cathedral of Congregationalism'.
Saltaire was Sir Titus Salt's legacy. Sir Titus Salt, 1st Baronet (20 September 1803 \u2013 29 December 1876), born in Morley, near Leeds, was a manufacturer, politician and philanthropist in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. I find him pretty inspirational, he was certainly way ahead of his time. His father Daniel Salt was a fairly successful businessman and was able to send Titus to Batley Grammar School.
In 1833 he had taken over the running of his father's business and within twenty years had expanded it to be the largest employer in Bradford. In 1848 Titus Salt became mayor of Bradford. He had a social conscience and took steps to look for solutions to the pollution from the many factory chimneys in the city.
Around 1850, he decided to build a large mill to consolidate his textile manufacture in one place, but he 'did not like to be a party to increasing that already over-crowded borough', and he bought some land three miles from Bradford, adjacent to Shipley next to the River Aire. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the Midland Railway, main arteries of the day were adjacent.
Building of his mill was begun in 1851. He opened it with a grand banquet on his 50th birthday, 20 September 1853. Following that public conscience he then set about building the houses, bathhouses, institute, hospital, almshouses and churches, that make up Saltaire. very revolutionary for the time. Similar ventures were persued by the quaker chocolate barons at Bournville and by Rowntree in York. Salt built the Congregational Church pictured here (now Saltaire United Reformed Church) at his own expense in 1858\u201359. He donated the land on which the Wesleyan Chapel was built by public subscription in 1866\u201368.
Sir Titus commissioned architects Lockwood and Mawson to design the building, as they had designed a number of other important Italianate buildings in Bradford City centre.
His body is interred at a mausaleum at the church and can be viewed. Reportidly at his funeral 100,000 people lined the route. Many people had him to thank for his far sightedness and care for his fellow man.
The church today is grade I listed. The entrance is up six steps under a portico supported by six unfluted Corinthian columns and topped by a fretted tower with cupola.
Inside are hollow Corinthian columns with beautiful Scagliola exteriors, an Italian technique implemented by Mr. Dolan of Manchester. Two ornate chandeliers of ormolu and cut glass hang from the ceiling, of such great weight that additional roof trusses had to be inserted to support them. Originally lit by gas, they were made by Hausburg of Liverpool.
The existing organ, built by Peter Conacher and Co. of Huddersfield, was installed in 1890, rebuilt at the end of the Second World War.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4569421476 - 'My first real experience of signal boxes was when my friend from the next year up in school Pete Williams used to blag me into the signalbox at Dinting on the Glossop to Piccadilly Manchester line. It had a chip pan, baby belling and all mod cons. I even remember the incumbent signalman holding a train for ten minutes while we finished our chips!
This is a panoramic shot of the Exeter West signal box, which is now located in original form at Crewe Heritage Centre, formerly the Crewe Railway Age. What's it doing here? you may reasonably ask.
Signalling in the Exeter area was renewed in 1985. this was part of the old GWR area (Great Western Railway or Gods Wonderful Railway as it can occasionally still be referred). It would have been demolished but for a group of enthusiasts who carefully dismantled it so it could be re-erected as a working museum demonstrating how the larger signal boxes of the past were. It indeed works virtually every weekend, trained 'signalmen' are present most weekends to describe and demonstrate signalling days of the past and answer questions from visitors.
Exeter West signalbox was built by the Great Western Railway in 1913. It was located at the west end of St. Davids station, controlling the junction for the London &
South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the Goods Lines avoiding the station, the engine sheds and various yards. The previous box was not spacious enough to accommodate the greater layout following enlargement of the station. The lengthy new signalbox contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers.
The signal box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electronically from a new box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of the box, the Exeter West Group moved in and carefully dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference. The first task was to safely remove all furniture, then dismantle the massive lever frame. all pieces were numbered and after two floundered attempts to site the box in Bristol and Swindon, Crewe found space for it.
The 131-lever frame was rebuilt lever by lever, and the interlocking painstakingly reinstated, and was completed during August 1992. The instrument shelf and the signalling equipment was then added. The box was formally opened to the public on May Day Monday 1993.
With the box once more restored to its proper condition, a start was made on rigging up equipment to simulate activity as it would have been when the box was operational. Most of the levers have been weighted to simulate real operation, although some are actually connected to real signals erected around the site.
An electronic simulator has been provided, and the job working the simulator can be harder than working the box itself, for the operator has to act as signalman at all the adjacent boxes, make telephone calls representing local staff, and work the track circuit lights to emulate the passage of trains.
The box can be worked to the full summer timetable of the 1960's, although generally the box is demonstrated to visitors with a very limited timetable to allow movements and actions to be explained. However once a year, on May Day weekend, members of the Group occasionally simulate a full timetable for a 54-hour continuous period. At its busiest, this requires four staff in the box (just as it used to be) and two further operators controlling the simulator.
If you were wondering, black levers are for points, blue locking points red for signals and black/white for detonators.
Whether you find trains and railways fascinating or not, this is a really interesting place. a bit of a trip back in time at least 25 years to a more manual age. Oh and if you were wondering, they do have a baby Belling, which would be capable of doing chips!

The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials. It was aquired by Ford in 1989 and is now part of the indian Tata steel and manufacturing group.
Jaguar cars are designed in Jaguar Land Rover's engineering centres at the Whitley plant in Coventry and at Gaydon in Warwickshire, and are manufactured in two of Jaguar Land Rover's plants
Castle Bromwich assembly plant in Birmingham and at the old Ford Halewood Body &
Assembly near Liverpool.
Two of the proudest moments in Jaguar's long history in motor sport involved winning the Le Mans 24 hours race, firstly in 1956 and again in 1957, in the hands of the little known Scottish racing team called Ecurie Ecosse whose name later went down in legendary status for twice pulling off a David v Goliath effort in the famed car killing race.
The Jaguar XF is marketted a mid-size executive car that was introduced in 2008 to replace the out-going S-Type in the company's line-up. In January 2008, the XF was awarded the What Car? 'Car of the Year' and 'Executive Car of the Year' awards. The XF was also awarded Car of the Year 2008 from What Diesel? magazine.

Where church lane and Broad lane meet is a lovely spot for catching the last rays of sun before heading into the village for a quick pint before tea. I would have liked to have been able to say I could smell a BBQ but it would be a wee fib! Also a blue sky untarnished with smoke trails from planes. All air traffic thankfully grounded by the Iceland volcano.
Grappenhall on the edge of south Warrington is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale. It roughly translates to 'The Groping Place' as my cousin (who has a degree in such matters but also an uncharacteristically un-catholic sense of humour) once explained to me. At the time of the Domesday Grappenhall was stated to be worth five shillings. Lets hope that was just the tax revenue.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I have resisted photographing the cat, although may relent if I can find a suitably creative way of doing it.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. The 'large room' in Grappenhall village, was converted into a Police station for the filming of the 'Wisteria Lodge' episode of The Return of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett. The 'Rams Head' pub was converted to the 'The Bull Hotel' in the same episode (see www.flickr.com/photos/nathanchantrell/4010783429/in/photo... ).
Grappenhall has a thriving Cricket Club and is part of the CCC. Cheshire County Cricket Club is one of the county clubs which make up the Minor Counties in the English domestic cricket structure, representing the historic county of Cheshire and playing in the Minor Counties Championship and the MCCA Knockout Trophy. The club is based at Cheadle and plays matches around the county at Boughton Hall in Chester, Nantwich, New Brighton, Grappenhall and Alderley Edge.
Oh, and by-the-way, I have reached 300 in my 365 without missing a day so far - yay! (big thanks to Jill, who helped me decide to start, way back in June - Hanx!)

It has its origins across the road from where it now stands back in 1826. It was known then for its Oysters, one of the rare foods I have given up trying to enjoy, they are just not for me. Local architect Robert Paterson is responsible for its parisian style and its a great step back to victorian gin palace times, a bit like the Phil in Liverpool ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ ).
On the menu today was a lovely tomato based fish soup, Moules (Mussels to you), mixed starters to share, pork in cider, although the homemade sandwiches and burgers in there are also really nice. i had the fish soup followed by a really good Cranachan (a local Scots desert with double cream, oats and raspberries), try it if you get the chance, naughty but nice!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4546943548 - 'One of my favourite watering holes in the city of Edinburgh. Delightfully tucked away off Princes Street and away from the rowdy bars of Rose Street. My default choice in there is Weihenstephan - '\u00e4lteste Brauerei der Welt' (lierally Dedicating Stefan - oldest brewery of the world), which is a lovely pint, in its own special tall glass. A plaque outside details its history.
The origins of the site was the Guildford Arms Hotel. This was more or less totally rteworked by Robert Macfarlane Cameron in 1898. It was modelled on the then popular victorian gin palace theme echoing the Phil in Liverpool and the Crown in Belfast among others. Most pubs were at the time male dominated and frankly dingy and possibly a little dangerous. The temperance movement is said to have encouraged the design of more luxurious pubs, particularly suitable for the fairer sex rather than just men.
The current configuration dates from 1940. However the centrepoint of the Guildford\u2019s late Victorian opulence is the magnificent Jacobean style ceiling which can be seen in this image. A row of real ale pumps on the bar all have the logo of DM Stewart, owner since victorian days.
A grand old Thorne Brothers Mirror hangs at the end of the bar. Just below the cornice height, wood panelling conceals a hidden room: legend has that this was aparently used to store spirits and other liquor which was pumped to the room from street level. A narrow walkway
leads from this room around the inner walls to the Gallery. This gallery now provides an ideal spot for diners to marvel at the superbly decorated ceiling or gaze down at the punters in the Public Bar. Both lunch and dinner are served in the Gallery Restaurant with lunch and snacks (Chilli Cashews is my weakness when in there) also served in the Lounge &
Public Bar areas. I can vouch for the excellent range of real ales. Usually a wider selection from Scotland (including the islands) than the neighbour to the south too. Readers of The Edinburgh Evening News voted the Guildford Arms Best City Bar in 1999. If you are in town and have a spare hour or so for victorian time travel, pop in!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4521877662 - 'St Michael's Cathedral was built after the destruction of the former during world war II during extreme German Luftwaffe bombing raids on the 14th November 1940. The intensity of this city's destruction was termed 'Coventry-isation' by Hitler.
It is to the external viewer quite concrete-y, yet a fine celebration of 20th century modernist architecture. The new cathedral was designed by Basil Spence (Knighted for this work) and Arup, constructed by John Laing. It is also a Grade I listed building. Remains of the old cathedral still sit beside it. A competition was held in 1950 to find an architect for the new Cathedral, over 200 designs were submitted. The foundation stone of the new cathedral was laid by Queen Elizabeth II on 23rd March 1956. Actual consecration was over 6 years later on the 25th May 1962.
Its design provoked much discussion, much like the new modernist catholic cathedral in Liverpool. A large tapestry of Christ dominates the altar area. the baptistery consists of a ceiling high mosaic of 195 panes of stained glass. The Great West Window, which looks out on the remains of the old cathedral is known as the Screen of Saints and Angels, engraved directly onto the screen in expressionist style by the New Zealand artist John Hutton.
The ceiling is an innovative and complicated construction. There are multiple pyramids of Canadian Spruce slats. Panels above each of which is movable so if needed the acoustic properties of the cathedral can be adjusted for paticular events. Around the nave walls are tablets of stone (the 'tablets of the word') with inscriptions. These are by Ralph Beyer. Inscriptions are uneven deliberately to try to reflect early Christian inscriptions.

The grade I listed Grand Pump Room is on the right with the white limestone of the Abbey at the end of the square. It would be nice to think of it as originating from roman days although this is not actually the case. The city of Aquae Sulis (Latin name, 'the waters of Sulis') was first established as a spa resort exploiting hot springs by the Romans in AD 43. Its history probably goes back even further.

Thomas Baldwin and later John Palmer were involved in its construction from 1789 onwards. Work continued until its final opening in 1799. Some Corinthian style half columns were added with a nice upper floor later. These open onto Stall street and you can now take tea on the first floor and watch people come and go in the square.
The pump room is now a grand restaurant with nice chandeliers and a piano. It looks to be a great spot for a luxurious quintessential English treat, tea, cakes or champers (just don\u2019t forget your wallet!).

It is a nice part of 'old London', it was the site of a flower, fruit and vegetable market from the 1500s until 1974. The wholesale market was then relocated to New Covent Garden Market in Nine Elms (not so picturesque). While Covent Garden is the only part of London licensed for street entertainment, performers have to jump through hoops, having to undertake auditions for the Market's management and representatives of the performers' union and signing up to timetabled slots.
It was nice on a quite mild March afternoon to enjoy my pint of Fullers London Pride overlooking the main piazza. This image has been turned to monochrome then selectively coloured.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4467466811 - 'This brilliant statue of horses in a fountain, from 1992 can be found just along from Piccadilly Circus heading towards Trafalgar Square at Haymarket. Another one of those things that I have passed many times and never got around to taking a snap. Anyway, I did manage to this evening. Rudy Weller's 'Horses of Helios'. Two are depicted, randomly choose from Pyrois, Eos, Aethon, and Phleyon, named in the legend. If you know which two they are, please leave a comment.
Helios was of course the Greek god of the sun and the four horses were his mythical transport.
In this shot I am looking back towards Piccadilly Circus and Ripleys 'Believe it or not'. Still very busy with rush hour office workers and Italian tourists making the most of the strong Euro.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4458588000 - 'Here is the first floor of Saxon Cross Antiques centre, Town Mill, High Street, Sandbach, Cheshire. It is just over from the market square Anglo-Saxon stone crosses. So quite an appropriate name. Phylis is one of the staff who looks after the centre and can guide you to that elusive collectors item or first day cover.
I stumbled upon this little treasure trove for collectors. Saxon Cross Antiques occupies part of the ground and the whole of the first and second floors. The third floor has been converted to a penthouse apartment. On the ground floor is \u201cCurshaws\u201d a bar restaurant. There are some telecommunications masts on the roof which are cunningly disguised in order to blend in with the old brick of the building.

The river was why the Romans came to build their fort here and the area below the city of Chester (now called The Roodee), which is now occupied by the racecourse was where the harbour was located. Over time the river silted and Liverpool became the port of choice for sea going vessels.
Near to this pedestrian bridge, north of town, is the Groves. A paved promenade complete with bandstand, caf\u00e9s, restaurants and pubs. Here there are river cruises or rowing boats to hire.

You have no doubt passed it many times on the A50. Its worth a visit (just take a left when you see the 'Styling Your Curves' sign next to the road as you reach the Choy Hing Village.

Being a bloke the correct choice of a well fitted bra has not really been one of my problems. As several women have told me over the years, finding a good shop that understands this is generally worth its weight in gold. The quantity of underwiring in some bra's is now becoming an issue with enhanced metal detector checks at airports. Triumph International have launched a 'Frequent Flyer Bra'. This oneuses metal free clasps and resin underwires instead of steel that are guaranteed to not set off metal detectors.

It is a science centre in Edinburgh, Scotland and a popular visitor attraction and venue for exhibitions etc in the city. It is a stitched joiner of four images.
From its doors on the third floor, the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace can be seen. It opened in 1999 and was a UK Millennium Commission project. It is within the walls of the the William Younger Centre, which is a distinctive castle-esque landmark building.
Dynamic Earth's architects were Michael Hopkins and Partners. The centre concentrates on earth science and the forces that have shaped the earth.

Visable from across the city, Calton Hill is the venue for events at various times in the year. The Beltane Fire Festival every April (30th of the month) each year is popular and generally attracts over 10,000 people.. This is a revival of the ancient Celtic May Day festival of Beltane. The Dussehra Hindu Festival has also been held the last few years in early October.
On the hill are a number of interesting structures. These include Governors House, the original site of Calton Jail, the National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School), the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the City Observatory. It is worth a walk up to it from Princes St. Follow the confusingly named Calton Hill lane up from the shopping centre.

The stone over Rob Roy's grave reads 'MacGregor Despite Them' The MacGregor clan was the only clan in history to be 'proscribed' - that is, it became illegal to be a MacGregor, on three separate occasions. To survive, clan members took on other names, many of which their descendants still use today.
The Graves of Rob Roy and Helen/Mary MacGregor and their sons Coll and Robert are also interred there.
In the kirkyard of Balquhidder's Parish Church, the ruins of the Old Church it replaced can be clearly seen up the hill behind Rob Roy's grave. Its situated on the lower slopes of the north side of Balquhidder Glen. It reflects the continuation of a tradition of worship in the glen that goes back 4000 years or more. The Celts believed this to be a 'thin place' where the spiritual world and the earthly world came close together. To the south is a spur of Ben Ledi ('the hill of God') and traces of a Neolithic temple dating back to 1800 BC have been found in the glen.
A graveyard stone describes how the MacLarens were attacked by the MacGregors of Glen Dochart. 18 MacLaren families resident in Balquhidder were murdered in the Glen before settling on their land. At the time the MacGregors largely evaded responsibility for what would today be called an act of genocide. But it was one of the factors later held against them (the more immediate being their slaying of several hundred members of Clan Colquhoun at the Battle of Glen Fruin on 7 February 1603) when the entire Clan MacGregor was outlawed by James VI in April 1603. These were very bloody times. It became a capital offence even to carry the name MacGregor.

The Sanctuary cafe is between the library and Brookfield Roads' United Reformed Church (Thomas Risley Church) and can be reached from either. Its thankfully christian with a small c, even nicer when you grew up as a card carrying fallen catholic like myself.
They are usually open from about 9.30am where a fresh bacon butty (or Lymm folk may well call them Bacon Sarnies - I dont know) is a good way to start the day. They will toast it too if you ask. There is a corner for kids to play if you have a small one in tow. Lawrence the gaffer does a good job and the volunteers will always go that extra mile for you.

Here is how I have often seen it. Possibly Bauhaus missed a trick in not using it as an album cover. It's reputed to be the home of Marion Braidfute, legendary wife of William Wallace. i have never stayed long enough to check if it has a pub or not.
There is a cake/desert called a 'Lamington'. Lamingtons are named after Charles Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington, who served as Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901. According to legend Lamingtons were first served in Toowoomba when Lord Lamington took his entourage to Harlaxton House to escape the steamy heat of Brisbane. Lord Lamington was believed to have hated the dessert that had been named in his honour, referring to them as 'those bloody poofy woolly biscuits'.

The debating chamber contains a shallow elliptical horseshoe of seating for the MSPs, with the governing party or parties sitting in the middle of the semicircle and opposition parties on either side, similar to other European legislatures. Such a layout is intended to blur political divisions and principally reflects the desire to encourage consensus amongst elected members. This is in contrast to the 'adversarial' layout reminiscent of other Westminster style national legislatures, including the House of Commons, where government and opposition sit apart and facing one another
The most notable feature of the chamber is the roof. The roof is supported by a structure of laminated oak beams joined with a total of 112 stainless steel connectors (each slightly different), which in turn are suspended on steel rods from the walls.
Such a structure enables the debating chamber to span over 30 metres (100 ft) without any supporting columns. In entering the chamber, MSPs pass under a stone lintel\u2014the Arniston Stone\u2014that was once part of the pre-1707 Parliament building, Parliament House. The use of the Arniston Stone in the structure of the debating chamber symbolises the connection between the historical Parliament of Scotland and the present day Scottish Parliament.

On 2 March 2006, a beam in the roof of the debating chamber swung loose from its hinges during a debate, resulting in the evacuation of the debating chamber and the suspension of parliamentary business. Parliament moved to other premises while the whole roof structure was inspected and remedial works were carried out. The structural engineers, Arup, stated that the problem with the collapsed beam was entirely due to the failure of one bolt and the absence of another. There was no design fault. The engineers concluded, in a report to MSPs, that the damage is likely to have been done during construction work on the chamber roof, in the latter phases of the project. The report also indicated that whilst one of the bolts was missing, the other was broken and had damaged threads commensurate with being over tightened or jammed, which twisted the head off, or came close to doing so.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4631607472 - 'When I am in Manchester, I usually take a short cut through this fabulous place, which you can do unless a performance is in progress. Many moons ago I used to go to meetings of the junior chamber of commerce here, in one of the side rooms. On this day it was spookily deserted. I stopped to check a text message while my camera with on my shoulder and below me a solitary man, dressed in black crossed the room without sound.
It has a great feeling of history (the last trading values still remain on the trading board for cotton etc) from 1968 and is very modern with its central circular 'pod' of a theatre at its heart. Its great to see events here and I have seen Shakespeare plays as well as the veritable John Shuttleworth (AKA Jilted John).
The Royal Exchange is a grade II listed Victorian building bounded by St Ann\u2019s Square, Market Street and Cross Street. The complex includes the Royal Exchange Theatre, and the Royal Exchange shopping centre.
The current building is the last of several buildings on the site used for commodities exchange, primarily but not exclusively of cotton and textiles.
The first exchange was built near to the present site in 1792. The first exchange was replaced by a second, larger, exchange that was constructed between 1806 and 1809. The second exchange was enlarged between 1847 and 1849. The second exchange was in turn replaced, by a third exchange by 'Mills &
Murgatroyd', constructed between 1867 and 1874. The building was then extended and modified by 'Bradshaw Gass &
Hope' between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading room in England. Thus was the importance of Manchester at this time.
The theatre's unique design was conceived by Richard Negri of Wimbledon School of Art, and was intended to create an unusually vivid and immediate relationship between actors and audiences. As the floor of the Exchange would not be able to take the great weight of the theatre and its audience, the module is suspended from four columns that also carry the hall's central dome. Only the stage area and ground-level seating rest on the floor of the hall itself.
The theatre can seat up to 700 people on three levels, making it the largest theatre in the round in Britain. There are 400 seats at ground level in a raked configuration, above which lie two galleries, each with 150 seats set in two rows. Every seat has a clear view of the stage.
Repairs after the IRA bombing adjacent in Corporation Street took over two years to complete and cost \u00a332 million, a sum provided by the National Lottery.
The Royal Exchange building and the theatre itself are reputed to be haunted. One of the ghosts is reputed to be that of the actor and founding artistic director, James Maxwell. Another is that of a maternal Victorian lady, well dressed and with 'a passion for drink'.
In 2006, the building was the subject of a paranormal investigation by the Most Haunted programme on Living TV.

The cathedral's official name is The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George in Manchester. Although extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and then again following severe bomb damage in the 20th century, the main body of the Cathedral largely derives from the wardenship of James Stanley (warden 1485?1506), and is in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Stanley was also primarily responsible for commissioning the spectacular late medieval wooden furnishings, including the pulpitum, the choir stalls, and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. It is one of the Grade I listed buildings in Manchester. Since 2005 the Dean of the Cathedral has been the Very Reverend Rogers Morgan Govender.
The Cathedral has thirty 16th-century misericords, considered to be amongst the finest in Europe. It is worth noting that the misericords have a stylistic similarity to those at Ripon Cathedral and Beverley Minster ? and although Manchester's post date-these, they were probably carved by the same school at Ripon. One of the most notable is N-08, which is the earliest known mention of backgammon in the UK. The early 16th century also saw the construction of an almost complete sequence of chantry chapels for local guilds along both north and south sides of the church
in effect creating a double aisle around the parochial nave, which is consequently much wider than it is long. Indeed Manchester is commonly claimed to have the widest nave of any cathedral in England. James Stanley is also responsible for the embellishment of the nave roof with supporters in the form of fourteen life-size angel minstrels, each playing a different late medieval instrument.

The Buxton opera house was built in 1903 and designed by Frank Matcham. He specialised in theatre design. He also was involved in the design of The London Palladium (1910) and London Coliseum (1904).
It has 900 seats and hosts the annual Buxton Festival. It has recently had much restoration work and has a busy programme of mixed entertainment, including opera and rock artists.

Built by the Manchester Ship Canal Company, Salford Docks was the larger of two sections that made up Manchester Docks
the other being Pomona Docks to the east.
They were opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria and spanned 120 acres (49 ha) of water and 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land. At their height the Manchester Docks were the third busiest port in Britain, but after containerisation and the limit placed on vessel size on the Manchester Ship Canal, the docks declined during the 1970s. They closed in 1982, resulting in the loss of 3000 jobs
