Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE4PFX - The Bull Ring was the location where the ancient custom of bull baiting took place. The bulls were chained down by a ring through their nose and left to defend themselves against dogs, specifically bred and trained to fight them.
The Angel Hotel was a large Georgian Building located where the Natwest Bank is today. It was one of the most important buildings in the town, and much business was conducted there. A 16 year old Princess Victoria stayed there whilst visiting the town, two year before she was to become Queen.
Damage, through subsidence, resulted in the building developing a leaning appearance and was described by an American visitor as not having, a straight line in it, either vertically or horizontally. The building was eventually demolished in 1924.

MV Mountwood
The Mountwood was the slightly older sister ship of the MV Woodchurch. Both of the ferries were built for the Corporation of Birkenhead to replace the existing fleet of 1930s steamers. The designs of the two new vessels were loosely based on the ferries Leasowe and Egremont of the Wallasey Corporation
they were designed by the same company, Graham and Woolnough, and were built at the same shipyard, Messrs. Philip and Sons Ltd. of Dartmouth. Mountwood was launched by Mrs Hugh Platt on 6 July 1959 into the River Dart, and after being fitted out was delivered to the Mersey in 1960. She was named after an overspill post-war housing development of Birkenhead.
The Mountwood and her identical sister Woodchurch originally had bright orange funnels with a black base and black soot buffer. On the main deck, there was a forward, heated shelter and also a main saloon, aft of this was the toilets and machine space. Below was a saloon bar. On the top deck was a large open promenade and a forward shelter beneath the bridge, although this shelter was open beneath the bridge so it was often breezy and cold. They had a main central wheelhouse and two side cabs, and power came from two medium speed Crossley 8-cylinder diesel engines.
In 2001, the Mountwood was withdrawn and taken to Birkenhead's former Cammell Laird shipyard (which became owned by A&P), and then to Clarence graving docks, where she was stripped of her fittings and parts of her superstructure were removed and rebuilt. Unfortunately the ferry remained dormant for some time due to problems at the shipyard. She was then re-engined and rebuilt. Noticeable changes were the addition of a new, angle fronted, large wheelhouse and bridge deck, plus her funnel, which was reinstated after the refit, was moved further back

He founded the academic discipline of social administration (now largely known in universities as social policy) and held the founding chair in the subject at the London School of Economics.
His books and articles of the 1950s helped to define the characteristics of Britain's post World War II welfare state and of a universal welfare society, in ways that parallel the contributions of Alva Myrdal and Gunnar Myrdal in Sweden. He is honoured in the Richard Titmuss Chair in Social Policy at the LSE, which is currently held by Julian Le Grand.
Titmuss's association with eugenics extended beyond the British Eugenics Society, to encompass other personal and intellectual connections.
He is also honoured by the annual Richard Titmuss Memorial Lecture in the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.
At the LSE, where he was the first professor of Social Administration, he transformed the teaching of social work and social workers and established Social Policy as an academic discipline. He also contributed to a number of government committees on the health service and social policy. He also did some consulting in Africa, sometimes together with Professor Brian Abel-Smith, who was later his successor in his chair.
His concerns focused especially on issues of social justice. His final and perhaps the most important book, The Gift Relationship expressed his own philosophy of altruism in social and health policy and, like much of his work, emphasized his preference for the values of public service over private or commercial forms of care. The book was influential and resulted in a study of the blood bank systems, specifically with regard to regulation on the private blood market exchange. President Nixon called for a complete study of the lack of coordination within the system only months following publication of Titmuss' findings.

The two Victorian coal drops sheds were used to receive coal from South Yorkshire and trans-ship it to narrowboats on the Regents Canal and to horse-drawn carts
coal drops were redundant and fell into decay. They were used as warehouse units
one was gutted by fire in 1985 and another used by Bagley's nightclub, which closed in 2007. The night clubs complemented a vibrant night life of easy drug access, raves and prostitution.
The Regent's Canal was named in 1820 after the Prince Regent, who became George IV the same year. After his demise, the Kings Cross monument was raised at the junction of New Road and Battlebridge Road (Euston Road and York Way)
In 1986 the rave scene started in London. Disused warehouses were used to stage illegal raves, a form of partying fuelled by House music from Chicago and the illicit drug ecstasy. The scene developed and spawned several legal clubs such as The Clink, Shoom and Heaven and by the early-to-mid 1990s became centred on three bars in King's Cross. There was Billy Reilly's bar, 'Fabric' under the arches of the Coal Offices (which inspired a successor club, also called Fabric), 'The Cross' and 'Bagley's', which took over three floors at the southern end of the Eastern Coal Drops
Argent Group, the overall developer for the King's Cross Central site, appointed Thomas Heatherwick as architect for the redevelopment of the Coal Drop Yards as a retail park in 2014. Heatherwick worked in conjunction with engineers Arup, and the plans were approved in December 2015. BAM Nuttall undertook the construction work, which started in February 2016, following a two-year pre-construction phase to survey the condition of the Victorian era buildings and carry out demolition work as necessary.

It's been over 30 years since Manchester shoppers got their first taste of renowned furniture retailer IKEA.
Set up by Ingvar Kamprad in 1948, the Swedish brand opened its first-ever UK store in Warrington on October 1, 1987 - and for years has welcomed thousands of shoppers travelling from across Manchester, Liverpool and further afield.
The flat-pack furniture maze has, over time, become the place where couples have argued over who will assemble their new wardrobe, where kids have begged for Swedish meatballs, and where parents have kitted their teenagers out before they leave the nest for student accommodation
The retailing giant was an instant hit with his concept of stylish, affordable, ready-to-assemble furniture and homewares.
The IKEA Warrington building was completed at Gemini Retail Park in May 1987, and, in the weeks afterwards, the store began to recruit staff for the October opening
In the late eighties and early 90s, before soft play centres were everywhere, IKEA endeared itself to kids with a ball pit at the front of the store - and the chance to sit on every chair and lie on every bed before a trip to the cafe

It finished in September 2015. The project aimed to enhance the station to cope with increased passenger numbers as well as expected future growth in traffic, but did not alter the train capacity of the station. In 2008, the station handled passenger numbers far in excess of the capacity of its existing design. The current station and Pallasades shopping centre were completed in 1967 and have become the subject of criticism for the congestion of the station and shabbiness of the shopping centre and parts of the station. It is part of the Big City Plan.
Birmingham New Street is the largest and busiest of the three main railway stations in the Birmingham City Centre, England. It is a central hub of the British railway system. The fountain, where the north tower of the World Trade Center once stood, was undergoing tests of the massive pumping systems that will blast 26,000 gallons a minute over the 30-foot deep black granite walls.
Daniels, who happened upon the test yesterday, said the sight of the water filling the 1-acre pool was awe-inspiring after years of planning and building.
Construction workers from around the site paused to look and listen during the tests as engineers below the memorial plaza monitored and adjusted the 16 pumps that will circulate 480,000 gallons of recycled water.
During the design phase of the memorial, there were concerns that the fountains might be too loud. But Daniels said the sound of the cascading water yesterday created a nice, peaceful background, like the sound of the ocean.
It's perfect. It's not overwhelming at all, Daniels said.
A second fountain over the footprint of the south tower will be ready for testing later this year. A spokesman for the Port Authority, which is overseeing construction of the $500 million memorial, said yesterday's trial run went very well.
The two fountains together make up the nation's largest manmade waterfalls, and are at the heart of the design of the memorial, called Reflecting Absence.
Paula Berry, a 9/11 family member who served on the 13-member jury that picked the memorial design by Michael Arad, was ecstatic about the test run.
The presence of water is incredibly important at the memorial, said Berry. When you think of the memorial's name, Reflecting Absence, you have to have the means to reflect and the water plays that role.
But Berry said the sound of the water rushing over the sides of the fountains could very well be one of the most lasting impressions visitors take away.
Yesterday's tests lasted a few hours, and will be repeated as needed.
Construction of the memorial remains on schedule for its planned opening next Sept. 11 the 10th anniversary

They invested in and successfully promoted a new soap-making process invented by chemist William Hough Watson. In 1930, Lever Brothers merged with Margarine Unie to form Unilever.
Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington. The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow. The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight. Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later.

The North Union Railway opened a station on the site in 1838. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3APN - Princes Square is a shopping centre on Buchanan Street in central Glasgow, Scotland. It was developed in 1986 to a design by Edinburgh architects, the Hugh Martin Partnership. The new five-storey, 10,450-square-metre (112,500 sq ft) retail centre occupies a pre-existing cobbled square dating from 1841, which was reconfigured by enclosing the entire space below a new clear glass domed and vaulted roof. An expansion was completed in summer 1999, extending the centre into Springfield Court and providing a further 1,860 square metres (20,000 sq ft) of retail area and a new retail frontage to Queen Street.
The original cellars of the existing buildings were excavated to provide additional space. Inside the square, new galleries and stairs give access to the upper storeys. The original sandstone facades were preserved around the modern interior. The centre is adorned with decorative glass, tiling, lighting, timber and metalwork, designed by artists and craftsmen.
The writer Bill Bryson referred to Princes Square as one of the most intelligent pieces of urban renewal.
The Hugh Martin Partnership earned several design awards for Princes Square, including the RIBA Scottish Regional Award for Architecture (1988), the Edinburgh Architectural Association Centenary Medal (1989), and a Civic Trust Award (1989). The original fabric has been protected as a category B listed building since 1970.

The Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Tewkesbury, in the English county of Gloucestershire, is the second largest parish church in the country and a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and has probably the largest Romanesque crossing tower in Europe.
In the 10th century the religious foundation at Tewkesbury became a priory subordinate to the Benedictine Cranbourne Abbey in Dorset. In 1087, William the Conqueror gave the manor of Tewkesbury to his cousin, Robert Fitzhamon, who, with Giraldus, Abbot of Cranbourne, founded the present abbey in 1092. Building of the present Abbey church did not start until 1102, employing Caen stone imported from Normandy and floated up the Severn.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the people of Tewkesbury saved the abbey from destruction in 1539: Insisting it was their parish church, which they had the right to keep, they bought it from King Henry VIII for the value of its bells and lead roof which would have been salvaged and melted down, leaving the structure a roofless ruin. The price came to \u00a3453 (\u00a3193,780 as of 2013).
The Abbey's 17th century organ - known as the Milton Organ - was originally made for Magdalen College, Oxford by Robert Dallam. After the English Civil War it was removed to the chapel of Hampton Court Palace and came to Tewkesbury in 1737. Since then, it has undergone several major rebuilds.

There is also an eavesdrop (a small open hole under the eaves of the house) which allowed a servant to listen in on the conversations of people awaiting admission at the original front door.
In 1612 a porch was added to the Great Parlour. A laundry and dairy were founded in 1860

The house was owned by the Norris family for many generations[5] until 1736 when Mary Norris, the heiress, married Lord Sidney Beauclerk.[6] After Mary's death in 1766 the house was leased to various tenants.[4] Richard Watt, a Liverpool merchant, purchased the house and estate from the Beauclerks in 1795.[7] The last surviving heir of the Watt family was Miss Adelaide Watt, who inherited the house and returned to it in 1878 at the age of 21 years. She died in 1921, leaving the house and estate in trust for 21 years

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BK4F7C - Quarry Bank Mill (also known as Styal Mill) in Styal, Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. Built in 1784, the mill is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and inspired the 2013 television series The Mill. It was established by Samuel Greg. The mill was notable for the innovative approach to labour relations, largely as a result of the work of Greg's wife, Hannah Lightbody.
Samuel Greg leased land at Quarrell Hole on Pownall Fee from Lord Stamford, who imposed a condition that 'none of the surrounding trees should be pruned, felled or lopped´
maintaining the woodland character of the area. The factory was built in 1784 by Greg to spin cotton. When Greg retired in 1832 it was the largest such business in the United Kingdom. The water-powered Georgian mill still produces cotton calico. The Gregs were careful and pragmatic, paternalistic millowners, and the mill was expanded and changed throughout its history. When Greg's son, Robert Hyde Greg, took over the business, he introduced weaving. Samuel Greg died in 1834.

Released June 1995, A Northern Soul is the second studio album by English rock band The Verve. The title is a reference to Northern Soul, a popular soul movement in Britain during the 1960s at which Wigan (The Wigan casino) was near its epicentre.
The Verve formed in 1990 in Wigan with Richard Ashcroft on vox, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones, and drummer Peter Salisbury. Simon Tong later became a member. Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to shoegazing and space rock, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and three albums.
I had first heard a track from their first album on a magazine compilation and was then hooked.
For this 2nd album the band de-camped to their Wigan-based practice room to begin writing and recording songs for their second studio album. Commenting on the effect that working in the 'dank rehearsal room' had on the band's songwriting process, frontman Richard Ashcroft stated:
'Practising in a dungeon in Wigan for this record, you're devoid of any kind of fashion, or thought of 'This is what we should be doing'. Like a band that goes into the studio and plays the music they hear in their heads rather than what they read in magazines'.
Critical acclaim was heaped upon the album (justifyably). Guitar Magazine writer Dan Eccleston claimed 'the band retreated to their Wigan rehearsal room and plugged in, tuned up and flipped out into that parallel universe wherein the Verve song resides. And the result is A Northern Soul - a record whose deep, dark funky rock makes their actually rather lovely '93 debut A Storm in Heaven sound almost limp. The Verve essence remains - swirling guitar arpeggios, grand rock themes, sprawling structures - but it's warmer, denser and more powerful in every way.'

Wigan Athletic Football Club is a professional football (Soccer ! ) team based in Wigan, Greater Manchester. They compete in the Premier League, in which they have been playing since their promotion from the Championship in 2005. Wigan's current spell in the Premier League is the only top flight run in the club's history.
They have played at the DW Stadium since 1999, which they now own, sharing the stadium with rugby league club Wigan Warriors. They previously played at Springfield Park for 67 years.
As of the 2009\u201310 season, Wigan Athletic are the youngest club in the Premier League, having only been formed in 1932. Sporting goods retailer JJB Sports\u2014whose former chairman Dave Whelan owns Wigan Athletic and his company DW Sports Fitness is currently the stadium's main sponsor.

I read the autobiography of Malcolm X in the late 1980's. It was a very moving book for me. One of a man coming out of criminality to lead his people, then to be betrayed by his peers.
Malcolm X (May 19th 1925 \u2013 February 21st 1965), was born Malcolm Little and also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. He was an African-American Muslim minister, public speaker, and human rights activist. He was a courageous advocate for the rights of African Americans, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans. His detractors in his age of inequality accused him of preaching racism, black supremacy, antisemitism, and violence. He has been described as one of the greatest, and most influential, African Americans in history.
Keith LeBlanc started out as a session drummer with Sugarhill Records, early 1980's. He formed the Sugar Hill House Band with fellow Americans Doug Wimbish (bass) and Skip 'Little Axe' McDonald (guitar), working with leading rap artists as The Sugarhill Gang (Rapper's Delight) and Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel on The Message and Freedom.
From his own 'Malcolm X No Sell Out', the first ever sampling record, on Tommy Boy Records (1983) to his involvement in creating the sound of funk noise giants Tackhead with Wimbish, McDonald and British dub producer Adrian Sherwood, he has gained recognition as one of the top and most innovative drummers/programmers around.

Tesco plc is a British international grocery and general merchandising retail chain headquartered in the Tesco House in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. It is the UK's largest supermarket chain.
The chain was founded by Jack Cohen in 1919. The brand first appeared after Cohen bought a shipment of tea from T.E. Stockwell and he used those initials and added the first two letters of his own surname. The first Tesco store was opened in 1929 in Burnt Oak, Edgware, Middlesex.
During the 1950s and the 1960s Tesco grew organically, and also through acquisitions, until it owned more than 800 stores. Originally specialising in food and drink, it has diversified into areas such as clothing, electronics, financial services, telecoms, home, health, car and dental insurance, retailing and renting DVDs, CDs, music downloads, Internet services and software. Tesco Express stores are neighbourhood convenience shops, stocking mainly food with an emphasis on higher-margin products (due to small store size, and the necessity to maximise revenue per square foot) alongside everyday essentials. They are found in busy city centre districts, small shopping precincts in residential areas, small towns and on Esso petrol station forecourts. In Warrington alone no-one is more than 3 miles away from a Tesco.
I have a Tesco clubcard and the intelligence collected about my purchases, where they are made and how often is total. Such that at Christmas I generally get opening hours of the filling station in Scotland nearest to where I spend the festive season with my club card statement. Despite the fact that is the only time I generally fill up there. When George Orwell wrote about 1984 I think he had authority not supermarkets in mind.

One of my favourite tracks from the Lennon and McCartney of the 1980's.
It was released as a single in January 1987, reaching number 12 in the UK Singles Chart. It did not appear on an original studio album. It can be found on the Louder Than Bombs, Singles and The World Won't Listen compilations.
Another newly completed song, 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby', was originally intended to be the A-side of this single. The single even made it to the white label test pressing stage and approximately 900 stock copies of the single were manufactured before the proper single was issued. This aborted single mix can be heard on the UK compilation The World Won't Listen, while the song was later remixed for the American compilation Louder Than Bombs.
The title alludes to the communist slogan 'workers of the world, unite!'.
During a chat with Shaun Duggan, Morrissey explained the meaning of the song as follows: 'It's more or less spiritual shoplifting, cultural shoplifting, taking things and using them to your own advantage.'
Musically the song bears a strong resemblance to the T.Rex song 'Children of the Revolution'. Both Morrissey and Johnny Marr are Marc Bolan fans, and Marr has admitted in an interview that the melody for a previous Smiths single, 'Panic', was copied from 'Metal Guru'. It also musically sounds like Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys Are Back In Town'. Johnny Marr has stated his love for Phil Lynnott many times.
Morrissey has said that this is his favourite Smiths song. He sang it in his 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2004 and his 2007 live shows.

This is a joiner / panorama made up of 43 individual shots, hence some movement at the joins. This is one of the principle shopping streets in Chester, Eastgate.
original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls.
In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas.
The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4706668333 - 'The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Truro, Cornwall is an Anglican cathedral. It was built in the Gothic Revival architectural style fashionable during the period, and is one of only three cathedrals in the United Kingdom with three spires.
The See (or Diocese) of Truro was established in 1876 and the first bishop, Edward White Benson, was consecrated in 1877: this was the first cathedral to be built on a new site in England since Salisbury Cathedral in 1220.
Construction began in 1880 on the site of the 16th century parish church (St Mary the Virgin) to a design by the architect John Loughborough Pearson, a leading figure of the 19th century Gothic Revival. The design combines the Early English style with certain French characteristics, chiefly spires and rose windows. Truro's resemblance to Lincoln Cathedral is not coincidental: Pearson had been appointed as Lincoln's Cathedral architect and the first Bishop of Truro, Edward Benson, had previously been Canon Chancellor at Lincoln. The central tower and spire stands 250 feet tall, while the western towers reach to 200 feet.
The cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and as such has no Lady Chapel, which is quite unusual. Because the cathedral is situated in the heart of the city there was little room with houses and shops packed closely about on all sides. In order to accommodate the cathedral it was necessary to bend the building six feet northward.
Two foundation stones were laid in 1880 and the first section of the cathedral was consecrated in 1887. The central tower was completed by 1905 and the building was completed with the opening of the two western towers in 1910. Pearson died in 1897 and the work of his architectural practice was continued by his son, Frank. The Cathedral was the location for the first service of Nine Lessons and Carols, devised by Bishop Edward White Benson for Christmas Eve in 1880.
In 2002 the cathedral embarked on what was hoped to be a fifteen year project to restore the east end, the west front and the central tower and spire. Reliant on available funds, work progresses when possible. Currently the towers are under refurbishment under this plan.
