Make a plan
Before you start drinking, set a limit on how much you're going to drink.
Set a budget
Only take a fixed amount of money to spend on alcohol.
Let them know
If you let your friends and family know you're cutting down and it's important to you, you could get support from them.
Take it a day at a time
Cut back a little each day. That way, every day you do is a success.
Make it a smaller one
You can still enjoy a drink, but go for smaller sizes. Try bottled beer instead of pints, or a small glass of wine instead of a large one.
Have a lower-strength drink
Cut down the alcohol by swapping strong beers or wines for ones with a lower strength (ABV in %). You'll find this information on the bottle.
Stay hydrated
Have a glass of water before you have alcohol and alternate alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic drinks.
Take a break

Although the name hagws or hagese was first recorded in England c. 1430, the dish is considered traditionally of Scottish origin. The city of Dublin was experiencing something of an economic renaissance at this time and Temple Bar was idyllically laced between the river and the administrative centre of Dublin.
O'Meara was a committed publican intent on spreading his wings. He also ran another pub at No. 1 Wood Quay. This was then at the epicentre of Dublin 19th century rag trade. O'Meara's two nearest neighbours were Christopher McCauley, Hat Manufacturer, and Edward Loman, Hatter.
O'Meara served almost a decade at the Temple Bar Pub before he sold out to James Farley, Grocer and Spirit Merchant in 1844. James Farley knew the business here very well, having made but a short journey from 38 East Essex Street where he had operated as a Provisions dealer. James Farley's reign at this old hostelery was of brief duration.
The Great Famine was raging across the country with unprecedented horror and devastation when William Cranston, a much respected Dublin publican, took the wheel in 1847.
During the middle to late 1850s, a new wave of Provisions, Dealers and Dram Grocers had infiltrated the Temple Bar area. They operated the practise of ˜dram-drinking'. The Dram Grocers allowed customers to buy spirits in an off-sales liquor store capacity and illegally consume them on the premises behind screens and makeshift partitions. This practice created much financial hardship for the authorities and regular or legitimate vintners (wine merchants).
William Cranston was a member of the License Trade delegation who traveled to lobby the British Parliament in Westminster, London, in 1863 to have this practice forbidden

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PKG - The Usher Hall is a 5 star concert hall, situated on Lothian Road, in the west end of Edinburgh, Scotland. It has hosted concerts and events since its construction in 1914 and can hold approximately 2,200 people in its recently restored auditorium, which is well loved by performers due to its acoustics. The Hall is flanked by The Royal Lyceum Theatre on the right and The Traverse Theatre on the left. Historic Scotland has registered the Hall with Category A listed building status.
The construction of the hall was funded by Andrew Usher, a whisky distiller and blender, who donated £100,000 to the city specifically to fund a new concert hall. The choice of site caused early delays but in 1910 an architectural competition was announced with the requirement that the hall be simple but dignified. The winning bid (one of 130 entries) came from Stockdale Harrison & Howard H Thomson of Leicester. The design was partly a backlash against Victorian Gothic, with a return to classical features owing much to the Beaux-Arts style. On 19 July 1911, George V and Queen Mary laid two memorial stones, an event attended by over a thousand people.

Five European wine-producing nations are trying to block Scotland's plans for minimum alcohol pricing.
France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria have said the policy is illegal, unfair and ineffective and could have a devastating impact on the wine and spirits industry.
They argue that it breaches European free trade law by discriminating against imported alcohol products.
The Scottish government insisted minimum pricing was perfectly legal.

It is a free house, as free as the wind as Mr Kerr used to say, therefore it has no connection with any brewery and only sells the best of each brewers produce.
The public house serves food everyday from 12 - 3 pm and in the evenings from 6.30 - 9 pm (except Friday / Sunday nights). A snack menu is available till 5 pm. The food that is served is seafood and SMØRREBRØD sandwiches. Inside, past the 'No trainers, No music, No cameras etc' signs, you enter a world of glorious clutter. Clocks, typewriters, ships, umbrellas and tools screwed to the walls. These have been collected over the years and cover every room, of which there are a few. It does make for a very homely and welcoming place.
There is a menu based on quite a large choice of Scandinavian Smorrebrod sandwiches. On this evening I was in there, the bar had a good selection of real ales and I opted for a Deuchers (when in Rome as they say...). There was no shortage of whiskies and you can buy champagne by the glass at a fiver.
In my book its deservidly up there in my premier league of British pubs, certainley unforgettable!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4529292058 - 'Ah! a relaxing and very civilised Easter bank holiday monday afternoon with my friend Stephen in the Cafe Royal, tucked away in West Register Street, Edinburgh. Nice to be served real cask ales and great food.
It has its origins across the road from where it now stands back in 1826. It was known then for its Oysters, one of the rare foods I have given up trying to enjoy, they are just not for me. Local architect Robert Paterson is responsible for its parisian style and its a great step back to victorian gin palace times, a bit like the Phil in Liverpool ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ ).
On the menu today was a lovely tomato based fish soup, Moules (Mussels to you), mixed starters to share, pork in cider, although the homemade sandwiches and burgers in there are also really nice. i had the fish soup followed by a really good Cranachan (a local Scots desert with double cream, oats and raspberries), try it if you get the chance, naughty but nice!

Its main product, Tobermory single malt, is used in the blends Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, which remains known under the former name, Ledaig.
The Tobermory Single Malt is distilled from unpeated malted barley and matured in oak casks for at least ten years. A heavily peated whisky is also produced, but in small quantities, named Ledaig after the original distillery name. The malts are used in a number of blends including Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The water for the distillery comes from a private loch near to the Mishnish lochs. The branding had been confused under previous owners, with the Tobermory brand being used for both a single malt and a blended whisky.
Production was upgraded in 1990, with the distillery becoming capable of producing a million litres of spirit a year. It uses a traditional copper“domed cast iron mash tun, four washbacks made of Oregon pine, and four spirit stills. The whisky is matured in both former bourbon whiskey and sherry casks. Maturation takes place at the distillery at Deanston.

Ledaig is the original name for the Tobermory Scotch whisky distillery on the isle of Mull, western Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1798 and the present buildings were erected during its first period of operation which continued until 1826. The distillery was 'silent' for long periods in the mid 1800s and mid 1900s and was twice revived during the 1970s. Now it has been revived again
The distillery belongs currently to Burn Stewart, closed in 1975, and reopened in 1990. Its main product, Tobermory single malt is used in the blends 'Scottish Leader' and 'Black Prince'. The distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, Ledaig (not quite as peaty as Lafroig). It is just to the left of the colourful harbour.
Single Malts mature at the Deanston Distillery in sherry and bourbon casks, they are then returned to Tobermory for the last few years. Burn Stewart also own this facility. Tobermory the Malt Scotch Whisky is presented in a bottle with an enamelled label. It is a vatted malt containing some Tobermory whiskies of up to 20-years old and proportions of newly-mature spirit from elsewhere.
Vatted malt is blended from malt whiskies from different distilleries. If a whisky is labelled 'pure malt' or just 'malt' it is almost certain to be a vatted whisky. This is also sometimes labelled as 'blended malt' whisky.

The distillery was founded by the Laird of Jura, Archibald Campbell in 1810. The distillery fell into disrepair but was restored in 1884. Around 1900 it was again in disuse and dismantled. The Isle of Mull or simply Mull (Scottish Gaelic Muile) is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland in the council area of Argyll and Bute.
With an area of 875.35 square kilometres (337.97 sq mi) Mull is the fourth largest Scottish island and the fourth largest island surrounding Great Britain. In the 2001 census the usual resident population of Mull was 2,667

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PTK - The Usher Hall is a 5 star concert hall, situated on Lothian Road, in the west end of Edinburgh, Scotland. It has hosted concerts and events since its construction in 1914 and can hold approximately 2,200 people in its recently restored auditorium, which is well loved by performers due to its acoustics. The Hall is flanked by The Royal Lyceum Theatre on the right and The Traverse Theatre on the left. Historic Scotland has registered the Hall with Category A listed building status.
The construction of the hall was funded by Andrew Usher, a whisky distiller and blender, who donated £100,000 to the city specifically to fund a new concert hall. The choice of site caused early delays but in 1910 an architectural competition was announced with the requirement that the hall be simple but dignified. The winning bid (one of 130 entries) came from Stockdale Harrison & Howard H Thomson of Leicester. The design was partly a backlash against Victorian Gothic, with a return to classical features owing much to the Beaux-Arts style. On 19 July 1911, George V and Queen Mary laid two memorial stones, an event attended by over a thousand people.
