Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG3F - This plain-speaking location image records Neon sign at night purpose of beer is to create pleasure,at Salt Beer Factory, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK, LS1 4GJ. The row metadata places the subject at 27-26 East Parade, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, LS1 4GJ. The spreadsheet date indicates 15 March 2024, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows signs, night, words, sign, neon, nightlife, purpose of beer is to create pleasure, drinking, with search-relevant terms including signs, night, words, sign, neon, nightlife, drinking, drink, CAMRA, english, illumination, illuminated, lit, lighted. Hospitality images often work beyond simple venue illustration, because pubs and bars speak to tourism, music, night-time economies, independent trade and changing social habits. Leeds is one of the major cities of Yorkshire, shaped by markets, textiles, banking, retail, universities, railway connections and a large modern service economy, making city-centre details useful for stories about northern growth and urban change. Pub and bar imagery can illustrate the changing British and Irish hospitality trade, real-ale culture, night-time economies, independent businesses, tourism districts, licensing, social life and the pressure on high streets and leisure spending. It has strong value for publishers needing authentic documentary imagery for news pages, blog articles, council reports, social media graphics, presentations, magazine features and local-history explainers. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH8AGP - The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid, commonly known as Ripon Cathedral, and until 1836 known as Ripon Minster, is a cathedral in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. Founded as a monastery by monks of the Irish tradition in the 660s, it was refounded as a Benedictine monastery by St Wilfrid in 672. The church became collegiate in the tenth century, and acted as a mother church within the large Diocese of York for the remainder of the Middle Ages. The present church is the fourth, and was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. In 1836 the church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Ripon. In 2014 the Diocese was incorporated into the new Diocese of Leeds, and the church became one of three co-equal cathedrals of the Bishop of Leeds.
The cathedral is notable architecturally for its gothic west front in the Early English style, considered one of the best of its type, as well as the Geometric east window. The seventh-century crypt of Wilfrid's church is a significant example of early Christian architecture in England. The cathedral has Grade I listed building status.
Saint Wilfrid was buried in this church near the high altar. Devastated by the English king Eadred in AD 948 as a warning to the Archbishop of York, only the crypt of Wilfrid's church survived but today this tiny 7th-century chapel rests complete beneath the later grandeur of Archbishop Roger de Pont l'Evêque's 12th century minster. A second minster soon arose at Ripon, but it too perished this time in 1069 at the hands of William the Conqueror. Thomas of Bayeux, first Norman Archbishop of York, then instigated the construction of a third church, traces of which were incorporated into the later chapter house of Roger's minster
The minster finally became a cathedral (the church where the Bishop has his cathedra or throne) in 1836, the focal point of the newly created Anglican Diocese of Ripon the first to be established since the Reformation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KD9 - James Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx KG OBE PC FRS (11 March 1916 24 May 1995) was a British Labour Party politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976. He won four general elections.
First entering Parliament in 1945, Wilson was immediately appointed the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and rose quickly through the ministerial ranks, becoming the Secretary for Overseas Trade in 1947 and being appointed to the Cabinet just months later as the President of the Board of Trade. Later, in the Labour Shadow Cabinet, he served first as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1955 to 1961 and then as the Shadow Foreign Secretary from 1961 to 1963, when he was elected Leader of the Labour Party after the sudden death of Hugh Gaitskell. Wilson narrowly won the 1964 election, going on to win a much increased majority in a snap 1966 election.
Wilson's first period as Prime Minister coincided with a period of low unemployment and relative economic prosperity, though also of significant problems with Britain's external balance of payments. In 1969 Wilson sent British troops to Northern Ireland. After losing the 1970 general election to Edward Heath, he spent four years as Leader of the Opposition before the February 1974 general election resulted in a hung parliament. After Heath's talks with the Liberals broke down, Wilson returned to power as leader of a minority government until there was a second general election in the autumn, which resulted in a narrow Labour victory. A period of economic crisis was now beginning to hit most Western countries, and in 1976 Wilson suddenly announced his resignation as Prime Minister.
Wilson was born at 4 Warneford Road, Huddersfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, on 11 March 1916. He came from a political family: his father James Herbert Wilson (December 1882 1971) was a works chemist who had been active in the Liberal Party.

My sex is invested in suburban photographs, Skyscraper shadows on a car crash overpass....'
Ultravox! is the first studio album from the band Ultravox, which at the time was properly eponymous before the band dropped the Neu!-inspired exclamation mark from their name. It contained this track and was released on Island Records February 1977. It was recorded at Island Studios in Hammersmith in the autumn of 1976 and produced by the band and Steve Lillywhite, with studio assistance from the great Brian Eno.
This band was effectively led by two different individuals in its career, two frontmen who, curiously, never played together in the band at the same time. From 1974 until 1979, the frontman and main driving force behind Ultravox was John Foxx who left the band to embark on an influential solo career that continues to this day. Some time following Foxx's departure, with the three remaining members in a hiatus, Midge Ure took over as lead singer, guitarist, and frontman.
I am a great fan of the first incarnation, before the mid 1980s New Romantic makeover. Tracks like this, 'The Wild, The Beautiful and the Damned' and 'Sat'day Night in the City of the Dead' were championed by the late great John Peel, on his 10pm BBC radio 1 show.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4589609737 - 'Saltaire United Reformed Church is one of the UK's most precious Victorian architectural gems. The church was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1859 near Shipley along from Bradford, West Yorkshire. Its style is Italianate religious architecture. It has been described as a classic 'Cathedral of Congregationalism'.
Saltaire was Sir Titus Salt's legacy. Sir Titus Salt, 1st Baronet (20 September 1803 – 29 December 1876), born in Morley, near Leeds, was a manufacturer, politician and philanthropist in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. I find him pretty inspirational, he was certainly way ahead of his time. His father Daniel Salt was a fairly successful businessman and was able to send Titus to Batley Grammar School.
In 1833 he had taken over the running of his father's business and within twenty years had expanded it to be the largest employer in Bradford. In 1848 Titus Salt became mayor of Bradford. He had a social conscience and took steps to look for solutions to the pollution from the many factory chimneys in the city.
Around 1850, he decided to build a large mill to consolidate his textile manufacture in one place, but he 'did not like to be a party to increasing that already over-crowded borough', and he bought some land three miles from Bradford, adjacent to Shipley next to the River Aire. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the Midland Railway, main arteries of the day were adjacent.
Building of his mill was begun in 1851. He opened it with a grand banquet on his 50th birthday, 20 September 1853. Following that public conscience he then set about building the houses, bathhouses, institute, hospital, almshouses and churches, that make up Saltaire. very revolutionary for the time. Similar ventures were persued by the quaker chocolate barons at Bournville and by Rowntree in York. Salt built the Congregational Church pictured here (now Saltaire United Reformed Church) at his own expense in 1858–59. He donated the land on which the Wesleyan Chapel was built by public subscription in 1866–68.
Sir Titus commissioned architects Lockwood and Mawson to design the building, as they had designed a number of other important Italianate buildings in Bradford City centre.
His body is interred at a mausaleum at the church and can be viewed. Reportidly at his funeral 100,000 people lined the route. Many people had him to thank for his far sightedness and care for his fellow man.
The church today is grade I listed. The entrance is up six steps under a portico supported by six unfluted Corinthian columns and topped by a fretted tower with cupola.
Inside are hollow Corinthian columns with beautiful Scagliola exteriors, an Italian technique implemented by Mr. Dolan of Manchester. Two ornate chandeliers of ormolu and cut glass hang from the ceiling, of such great weight that additional roof trusses had to be inserted to support them. Originally lit by gas, they were made by Hausburg of Liverpool.
The existing organ, built by Peter Conacher and Co. of Huddersfield, was installed in 1890, rebuilt at the end of the Second World War.

The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Marsden, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Sky, light and season should be checked visually
the subject is useful for architecture, heritage and place-based editorial use. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
