Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM99BB - A straight-on, documentary view of the Flower of Scotland shopfront at 98 Canongate on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, photographed in crisp winter light. The signage across the fascia is clear and readable, with additional wording highlighting Harris Tweed, Cashmere and Scottish Gifts, immediately signalling a tourism-focused retail offer. Large display windows are packed with colourful merchandise, including tartan and knitwear items, racks of souvenirs, and dense point-of-sale displays that create a bright, busy storefront against the darker stonework of the historic Old Town streetscape.
The composition captures the commercial character of the Canongate section of the Royal Mile, where visitors browse for practical cold-weather purchases and Scotland-themed mementos. The pavement and road edge provide a strong horizontal base, while the illuminated interior draws the eye into the shop, suggesting warmth and activity on a cold day. The scene suits editorial uses around Edinburgh tourism, souvenir retail, Royal Mile shopping culture, and the visitor economy, as well as broader themes of heritage streets and modern tourist consumption in historic city centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX189D - This image shows the remains of Hepworths store branding painted directly onto a wall, with the lettering partially faded and worn through age and exposure. The weathered surface, peeling paint, and distressed texture reveal the name Hepworths, once a familiar presence on British high streets as a major menswear retailer throughout the twentieth century. The fragmentary nature of the sign suggests a former shopfront that has since been altered, repurposed, or redeveloped.
Hepworths was founded in Leeds in the late nineteenth century and grew to become one of Britain's best-known clothing retailers, particularly associated with affordable men's suits and workwear. At its height, the company operated hundreds of stores across the UK and played a significant role in shaping everyday retail culture in towns such as Warrington. The decline and eventual disappearance of Hepworths reflects wider changes in British retail, including consolidation, competition from larger chains, and the shift toward out-of-town and online shopping.
The image captures themes of retail history, urban change, and the physical traces left behind as high streets evolve. The exposed lettering functions as a ghost sign, offering visual evidence of past commercial life embedded in the urban fabric. This photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to British retail heritage, high-street decline, urban decay, nostalgia, economic change, and the social history of shopping in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX1858 - This image shows the former marketplace area in Warrington town centre decorated with large rainbow-coloured canopy panels in preparation for a Pride event. The bright fabric strips are suspended above communal seating and tables, transforming the covered public space into a visually striking symbol of LGBTQ inclusion, diversity, and celebration. Members of the public can be seen using the space beneath the colourful installation, reinforcing its role as an everyday civic environment adapted for a community event.
Warrington, a large town in Cheshire, has in recent years invested in town-centre regeneration and the reimagining of public spaces to support events, social activity, and local identity. Pride celebrations form part of a wider programme of cultural events across towns and cities in the UK, promoting visibility, equality, and support for LGBTQ communities while drawing people into shared urban spaces.
The image captures themes of Pride, inclusivity, community life, and the evolving use of traditional market areas within British town centres. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to LGBTQ Pride events, diversity and inclusion, civic space, urban regeneration, community gatherings, and contemporary social culture in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCA2K2 - Barnsley British Co-operative Society (BBCS) was founded in August 1861 as a result of being heavily influenced by the philosophy of a founding member named George Adcroft. Adcroft had moved from Lancashire to work at the Oaks Colliery in Barnsley. He had previously been a member of the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers which was established in 1844. The Rochdale society was one of the first co-operatives to pay a dividend ?divi' to its members and many of its objectives around trading were used as a basis for new co-operatives across the country. The first store in Barnsley was opened in March 1862 at 16 Market Street and the first district store opened in Dodworth in 1863. By the end of the century the majority of outlying districts had a grocery branch and the society's principle for being self-sufficient meant that a number of production plants had opened, including a flour mill, bakery, abattoir and tin can factory. In 1950 the society opened its first self-service grocery store at New Lodge, which paved the way for a number of other store conversions over the next two decades. By the 1960s other departments of the society included butchery, restaurant, clothing, jewellery, optical, travel agency and decorating. However, by the early 1970s the society began to contract
it started to close smaller grocery stores which weren't profitable or suitable for self-service and in 1971 merged with another society, Co-operative Retail Services (CRS). The name ?Barnsley British Co-operative Society' subsequently disappeared from the high street

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X6M - This image shows the window signage of Angela Bare, an independent footwear retailer located at 6 Clifford Street in York city centre. The shop name is painted in ornate gold lettering directly onto the glass, with reflections of surrounding historic buildings and street activity visible across the surface.
Angela Bare specialises in retail footwear and operates from a prominent city-centre location within York's historic commercial area. Independent shoe retailers such as this play an important role in maintaining diversity on the high street, offering alternatives to national chains and contributing to the character of local shopping streets.
The reflective window creates a layered visual effect, combining branding with the architectural and urban context of Clifford Street. The image highlights the interaction between retail signage and the surrounding cityscape, a common feature of shopping streets in historic English cities where modern retail occupies traditional buildings.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering independent retail, footwear and fashion shopping, high street economics, urban reflections, York tourism, and the role of small businesses in historic city centres

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKMW7T - Go Outdoors has been placed in and acquired back out of administration in a pre-pack deal by its former and now current owner JD Sports.
A fundamental restructuring of the retailer has been deemed necessary with coronavirus having forced the closure of its 67 stores across the country.
Statements from JD Sports explain that one effect of the enforced COVID-19 shutdown was bringing into sharper focus the operating costs of the business, with a particular issue being its extremely inflexible property leases.
Those leases are said to have entailed upwards only rent reviews, which contributed to JD Sports taking the view that it would need to fundamentally overhaul Go Outdoors in order to justify retaining it as part of its wider group.
Advisers were appointed to support the process of Go Outdoors potentially being sold in May but it was subsequently decided that a pre-pack administration deal would be the best route forward.
A consideration of ?56.5 million has been paid by JD Sports to reacquire Go Outdoors, with plans in place to see the employment of more than 2,000 staff of the business transferred alongside ownership of its assets.
JD Sports has said it is the group's intention to retain the majority of Go's retail estate and preserve as many job as possible.
Go Outdoors primarily sells fishing, camping and cycling equipment across its 67 outlets in the UK and via its online presence.
Retail businesses were already faced with a tough operating environment prior to the coronavirus crisis but the COVID-19 lockdown has heaped further financial pressures on to the sector in recent months.
Peter Cowgill, JD Sports' executive chairman, said in a statement: As a consequence of COVID-19, Go Outdoors was no longer viable as previously structured and would have absorbed capital at an unsustainable rate for the foreseeable future.
Having investigated all available options for the business, we firmly believe that this restructuring will provide Go Outdoors

He started as a peddler, then set up as a general outfitter in Chesterfield in 1903 selling readymade suits bought from a wholesaler.[2][3] Following his marriage to Sophie Marks in 1909 the name of the company was changed from M. Burton to Burton & Burton. On the birth of twin boys in (1917) he gave his name as Montague Maurice Burton.
He died while speaking after a dinner in Leeds on 21 September 1952. The funeral was at the Harrogate Synagogue (some sources say Chapeltown) and he was interred at Gildersome.
?The Tailor of Taste'
When Montague Burton became a limited company in 1917, it was registered as ?Montague Burton the Tailor of Taste Ltd'. The slogan, as part of Burton's name, formed part of firm's logo, appearing on fascias, parapets, floors, and even on ventilation grilles.
Tiles and Mosaics
The entrance lobbies of many Burton shops had mosaic floors in the early-to-mid 20th century, and Burton was no exception. These sometimes included the popular Burton slogan: ?Let Burton Dress You'. This also appears in a black and red glazed terracotta panel on the side elevation of the branch in Abergavenny (1937). Burton's terracotta was usually supplied by the Middleton Fireclay Co. of Leeds

UKHSA warns of lower levels of natural immunity to flu this year and increased coronavirus (COVID-19) circulation
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging everyone eligible for a free flu vaccine and a COVID-19 booster to take up the offer as soon as possible ahead of what could be a difficult winter with respiratory viruses circulating widely.
International surveillance shows that H3N2 ? a subtype of influenza type A ? is currently the most-commonly detected flu virus worldwide. H3N2 has recently caused waves of infection in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia, which has also experienced flu circulating earlier than usual in their winter season.
This H3N2 strain circulated in the UK last winter but was held largely in check by COVID-19 restrictions when people mixed a lot less and worked from home. This helped to protect people from catching flu but has also led to lower levels of natural immunity to this strain building up within the population.
There was record uptake of the flu jab in people aged 65 and over in 2021 and 2022 (82%), though there was lower uptake among people in clinical risk groups and pregnant women and these groups are particularly encouraged to come forward this year.
All primary school children and some secondary school children are eligible for the flu nasal spray this year, which is usually given at school. GP surgeries are also inviting children aged 2 and 3 years old (age on 31 August) for this nasal spray vaccination at their practices.
Most young children will not have encountered flu yet. This means they will not have built up any natural immunity to this virus, so it is particularly important for them to take up the flu vaccine this year.
In addition to the predicted flu wave, we have early indications that COVID-19 rates are beginning to rise ahead of winter, increasing the threat to people's health

It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It is a subsidiary of the Pentland Group.

In 2020, JD Sports was anticipated to appoint administrators for its nearly bankrupt Go Outdoors brand, placing additional high street workers at risk amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
On October 16, 2020 JD Sports opened a new flagship Store in Times Square New York. In December 2020, it was announced that the company had pulled out of talks aimed at rescuing department store chain Debenhams.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERR67 - Primark is an Irish fast fashion retailer with headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, and a subsidiary of the British food processing and retail company ABF. The company is named Penneys in the Republic of Ireland, where it was founded. The Penneys brand is not used outside of Ireland because it is owned elsewhere by American retailer J. C. Penney. The company has operations in Europe and the United States.
The company's first store, still in operation, was founded by Arthur Ryan on behalf of the Weston family (who had founded Associated British Foods in 1935) in June 1969 on 47 Mary Street, Dublin.
Success in the Republic of Ireland led to expansion into Northern Ireland, with Penneys opening a large store in Belfast City Centre in 1971. The company subsequently expanded outside of Ireland with a Primark store in Derby, England, in 1973. The company could not use the name Penneys in Europe outside Ireland as it was registered by J. C. Penney. The name Primark was then invented to use outside Ireland
Primark offers a diverse range of products, including baby and children's clothing, womenswear, menswear, homeware, accessories, footwear, beauty products and confectionery

Eamon and Dan tap into the wonder of Riverdance by Tomas Conlon
DAN Fay and his son Eamon are shoemakers to the stars. In a quiet workshop off Dublin's Parnell Square they have crouched for weeks over their lasts, making the dancing shoes that have clattered in spectacular rhythm at the Riverdance show which premiered Thursday night. Sixty-four-year-old Dan has been making shoes for nearly 50 years but his trade - like Irish dancing itself - came in from the margins at last year's Eurovision when Jean Butler and Michael Flatley tapped their way into the nation's heart.
Ms Butler was wearing their handmade shoes that night, as were most of the backing dancers, and both Jean and Michael will be wearing them for the duration of the Riverdance Show. In addition, they have measured and fitted the Russian Cossack dancers with their shoes, along with the guest tap dancers from America and a host of the supporting performers. The Russians have also had their cossack dancing boots mended in the Fay workshop
Dan and Eamon will also be present backstage each night of the Riverdance show to carry out running repairs on broken straps, loose heels and any other emergencies that might occur. Ms Butler's shoes in fact were rushed by courier to their workshop last Thursday for a repair job just hours before the curtain went up on the show.
The shoes are made entirely from leather with a fiberglass tip at the toe and heel which produces that tap effect.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGY0 - Iconic clothing chain Stolen from Ivor's last shop has been saved - thanks to the M.E.N.
Founder Ivor Hazan, 67, opened his first boutique on the King Street West in Manchester city centre in 1965 and his 40 stores became a Mecca for fashion hipsters across the region.
He announced last month he was to shut the doors on his last remaining shop in Stockport, which opened in 1974, due to declining sales.
However after the story was featured in the pages of the M.E.N and on our website, the brand has undergone a revival.
Ivor says he has been inundated with people coming into the shop and sharing their stories of the off-the-wall clobber they bought from him in their youth.
One man even broke down in tears whilst other wanted to buy his distinctive yellow carrier bags and sell them online.
And after seeing a spike in sales Ivor says he will keep the shop open - for now at least.
His first store opened at the height of the ?swinging' Sixties.
It was close to a boutique owned by United hero George Best and he had a gentleman's agreement that he would not sell suits if the United ace didn't sell jeans.
In 1966 it became the first store in the north of England to stock Levis jeans, which then cost ?2.37 a pair.
The brand grew and at its peak it had 43 stores across the north west, including Stockport, Altrincham, Bolton and Bury.
However all but seven of them were forced to close in 2002 after the company went into administration.
And Ivor said stores such as Primark were ?killing' independent stores like his.
But due to the phenomenal response after we featured their plight he has shelved plans to take his operation solely online and he will keep the doors open of the shop on Prince's Street in Stockport town centre.
The Didsbury entrepreneur said: It's just been absolutely amazing.
Since the M.E.N ran our story we've had so many people coming in and telling us about things they bought 20 years ago.
Telling us that their mums used to bring them as kids.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KF00 - Sir Montague Maurice Burton (15 August 1885 ? 21 September 1952) founded Burton Menswear, one of Britain's largest chains of clothes shops.
Born a Lithuanian Jew (Meshe David Osinsky) in Kaunas province, he came alone to Britain in 1900, to escape the Russian pogroms. He was well-educated, having studied in a yeshiva, but arrived unable to speak English.
By 1913 Burton had five men's tailor shops with headquarters in Sheffield and manufacturing in Leeds. He had four hundred shops, and factories and mills, by 1929, when the company went public. His firm made a quarter of the British military uniforms during World War II and a third of demobilisation clothing.
Burton declined the offer to be Lord Mayor of Leeds in 1930 but was knighted in 1931 for services to industrial relations and was a Justice of the Peace from 1924. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries in 1940 and was awarded an honorary doctorate (DLitt) by the University of Leeds in 1944.
Legacy
Burton endowed chairs in industrial relations in the University of Leeds and Cardiff in 1929 and Cambridge in 1930. He also endowed chairs of international relations in Jerusalem (1929), and at Oxford University (1930), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) (1936) and The University of Edinburgh (1948).
He is commemorated in the Montague Burton Residences, which are student flats at the University of Leeds.
Burton is a large United Kingdom high street clothing retailer. The company was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, but became a trading name of Arcadia Group Brands Ltd, part of the Arcadia Group. Sir Philip Green acquired the Arcadia Group in 2002, and is now the sole owner of Burton. There are over 400 stores in the UK. It has also expanded to branches at out of town sites since the 1980s, such as at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre in the West Midlands, where it has had a store since November 1989.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BC3999 - Shoe fetishism is the attribution of attractive sexual qualities to shoes or other footwear as a matter of sexual preference, or an alternative or complement to a relationship with a partner. It has also been known as retifism, after the French novelist Nicolas-Edme R??tif (October 23, 1734?February 2, 1806), also known as R??tif de la Bretonne.
Individuals with shoe fetishism can be erotically interested in women's shoes. Although shoes may appear to carry sexual connotations in mainstream culture (for example, women's shoes are commonly sold as being sexy) this opinion refers to an ethnographic or cultural context, and is likely not intended to be taken literally. Another fetishism, which sometimes is seen as related to shoe fetishism, is boot fetishism.
These shoes, a huge pair of red heels were the source of much bemusement when they were suddenly dropped off outside the Caci Room salon on Gainsborough Road earlier this year.
But now the high heels, which Caci Room landlord Kelvin Smith told the Warrington Guardian were an advertisement for his garden ornaments business, have been moved to a spot just off the Cockhedge roundabout on Crossley Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ERH - Tweed is a rough, woollen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture, resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It is usually woven with a plain weave, twill or herringbone structure. Colour effects in the yarn may be obtained by mixing dyed wool before it is spun.
Tweeds are an icon of traditional Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English clothing, being desirable for informal outerwear, due to the material being moisture-resistant and durable. Tweeds are made to withstand harsh climates and are commonly worn for outdoor activities such as shooting and hunting, in England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. In Ireland, tweed manufacturing is now most associated with County Donegal but originally covered the whole country. In Scotland, tweed manufacturing is most associated with the Isle of Harris in the Hebrides.
The original name of the cloth was tweel, Scots for twill, the material being woven in a twilled rather than a plain pattern. A traditional story has the name coming about almost by chance. Around 1831, a London merchant, James Locke, received a letter from a Hawick firm, Wm. Watson & Sons, Dangerfield Mills about some tweels. The merchant misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade-name taken from the River Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders textile area. The goods were subsequently advertised as Tweed and the name has remained since

The first mention of the busts as Emperor Heads came in 1911 in the novel Zuleika Dobson, by Max Beerbohm. Despite the name, the busts do not represent ancient emperors, nor, indeed, anyone in particular.

A sex shop or erotic shop is a shop that sells products related to adult sexual or erotic entertainment, such as vibrators, lingerie, clothing, pornography, and other related products. The world's first sex shop was opened in 1962 by Beate Uhse AG in Flensburg, West Germany, and sex shops can now be found in many countries. Many sex shops also trade over the internet. Sex shops are part of the sex industry.
In most jurisdictions, sex shops are regulated by law, with access not permitted to minors, the age depending on local law. Some jurisdictions prohibit sex shops and the merchandise they sell. In some jurisdictions that permit it, they may also show pornographic movies in private video booths, or have private striptease or peep shows. Also an adult movie theater may be attached.
Near borders of countries with different laws regarding sex shops, shops on the more liberal side tend to be popular with customers from the other side, especially if importing the purchased materials by customers to their own country, and possessing them, is legal or tolerated

John Foxx And The Maths is a musical project featuring electronic music pioneers John Foxx and Benge. The duo were initially a studio based project working from Benge's studio in Shoreditch, London but have also engaged in live work. They specialise in the use of analogue synthesisers and drum machines and have released two albums, Interplay and The Shape of Things, both in 2011.
You will perhaps know John Foxx as a founder member of 1970's band Ultravox. In December 2009 the official John Foxx website Metamatic announced Foxx's new musical project. Benge had already broken the news on his own blog in November calling The Maths 'a new album project'.
An initial single Destination / September Town was released in December 2009 as download only from Townsend Records and later via i-tunes. The duo continued to work in Benge's studio in Shoreditch throughout 2010 and some new tracks were previewed at the Short Circuit electronic music festival held at The Roundhouse in London on 5 June 2010.
A new album entitled Interplay was announced in January 2011containing this track and released on March 21. The official website described the album as 'moody and atmospheric, but also full of songs that are actually more ”pop” than avant garde, Interplay pulls various strands of electronic music together – from early electro to 70s Krautrock, even flashes of Cabaret Voltaire and Foxx’s first band, Ultravox!'
The album gained much critical acclaim with The Quietus calling it 'one of the finest electronic records you will hear in 2011.
I had the pleasure of seeing them at the Manchester Academy in late 2011 - www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/6280475123/
Weddings are big business and many people looking to tie the knot visit wedding catwalk shows in hotels etc, deciding how they are going to spend the average of over £12K on their event and honeymoon. As anyone who knows me I am not a big believer in the institution, but I had an interesting day photographing the catwalk show at the Holiday Inn Wilmslow, near Manchester Airport..

Durham Castle is a Norman castle in the city of Durham, North East England, which has been wholly occupied since 1840 by University College, Durham.
The castle was originally built in the 11th century as a projection of the Norman king's power in the north of England, as the population of England in the north remained 'wild and fickle' following the disruption of the Norman Conquest in 1066. It is an example of the early motte and bailey castles favoured by the Normans. The holder of the office of the Bishop of Durham was appointed by the King to exercise royal authority on his behalf, the Castle was his seat.
Entrance to Bishop Bek's Great Hall
It remained the Bishop's palace for the Bishops of Durham until the Bishops made Auckland Castle their primary residence and the castle was converted into a college.
The castle has a large Great Hall, created by Bishop Antony Bek in the early 14th century. It was the largest Great Hall in Britain until Bishop Richard Foxe shortened it at the end of the 15th century. However, it is still 14 m high and over 30 m long.
The King Bishops had considerable power. From the seventh century A.D. onwards, in addition to his spiritual authority, the bishop of Durham also acted as the civil ruler of the region as the lord of a liberty, claiming local authority equal to that of the king. The bishop appointed all local officials and maintained his own court. After the Norman Conquest, this claim continued to be maintained by the bishop, and was eventually recognized with the establishment of the region as a county palatine. As holder of this office, the bishop was titled a prince-bishop, and considered the equivalent of an earl. Except for a brief period of suppression during the Glorious Revolution, this temporal power of the office lasted until all such authorities were abolished in 1836.

03/12 – Father
Proud, hardworking, but not particularly well off, he got on relatively well with his dad. Luckier than many of his friends then.
In those times some of his friends were more latchkey, parents spirited away for six months at her majesties pleasure, or just endlessly working away, building trade, drivers or down in London in music or media. Temptations were all around for the adults left at home. Wayward baby sitters, amorous neighbours, randy teenagers. The Zephyr Zodiac he could remember, its plate BNT6833. Leather seats, the smell of un-burnt two star and brown foam filling out from the dodgy rocker box.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
An ipod track that I ripped from a red vinyl single from my loft. Japan came out of Catford, South London. They were often associated with the 'New Romantic' movement, but the band were far more sophisticated than this narrow definition.
Band members David Sylvian (Vox), Richard Barbieri (Keyboards), Mick Karn (Bass), Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen (percussion). Later Rob Dean joined playing guitar.
The band debuted on record with the 1978 album 'Adolescent Sex' from which this track was taken. It was followed up with 'Obscure Alternatives'. Both albums sold well in Japan (where the band's name helped them to gain a devoted cult following) and Holland, where the single 'Adolescent Sex' was a Top 30 hit. They also gained some popularity in Canada. Unfortunately in their native UK those albums were largely ignored.
Though influenced by artists such as the New York Dolls, Roxy Music and David Bowie, both albums were widely dismissed by the UK music press as being distinctly outmoded at a time when punk and New Wave bands were in ascendence. The band were managed by Simon Napier-Bell who has also managed The Yardbirds, Marc Bolan, London and Wham!. Check out www.simonnapierbell.com for a quick tour of his world or his book 'Black Vinyl, White Powder' a recommended rollercoaster ride through the most interesting 20 years of UK music.
1979's Quiet Life, heralded a significant change towards a more electronic sound. Their final two studio albums, Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980) and Tin Drum (1981), were released on the Virgin label, and continued to expand their audience as the band refined its new sound and, somewhat unintentionally, became associated with the early-1980s New Romantic movement. Tin Drum in particular is critically regarded as one of the most innovative albums of the 1980s, with its startlingly original fusion of occidental and oriental sounds, and peaked just outside the UK Top 10. Its unconventional single 'Ghosts' reached no 5 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Japan's biggest domestic hit.
Japan's last ever performance was on 16 December 1982 in Nagoya, Japan. The band's final Hammersmith concerts were recorded to produce Oil On Canvas, a live album and video released in June 1983. This is a good starting point if you woul dlike to get to know the band. Tell 'em I sent you!
------------------------
To avoid controversy over the title, the album was renamed 'Japan' in some countries' Any controversy in this image should be rooted in the mind of the beholder.

Certainly more a shop for the ladies, I wouldn't know my underwired from my padded basque or the difference between a body, babydoll or a Bustier. Luckily Linda has a website for 'La Bonita' (which in spanish means 'The Pretty One' - www.labonitaonline.com 01925 212937) so if you are looking at something for the weekend, you can order it there on your plastic.
Being a bloke the correct choice of a well fitted bra has not really been one of my problems. As several women have told me over the years, finding a good shop that understands this is generally worth its weight in gold. Linda has some useful hints and tips on her website and I am sure if you take yourself in to see her, you will be in good hands. She can no doubt guide you through the minefield of types

The quantity of underwiring in some bra's is now becoming an issue with enhanced metal detector checks at airports. Triumph International have launched a 'Frequent Flyer Bra'. This oneuses metal free clasps and resin underwires instead of steel that are guaranteed to not set off metal detectors.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This music you may remember from BBC Saturday Sport was composed by MES (Mark E Smith) and The Fall. To get a feel for the show, check this out. Unfortunately, his beloved Man City had managed a 'Hopeless as usual performance' in their 0-0 draw against Blackburn.
The Fall are an English post-punk group, formed in Prestwich, Greater Manchester in 1976. The group has existed in some form ever since, and is essentially built around its founder and only constant member Mark E. Smith. First associated with the punk movement of the late 1970s, the group's music has gone through several stylistic changes over the years.
However, The Fall's music is often characterised by repetition, an abrasive guitar-driven sound, and is always underpinned by Smith's vocals and often cryptic lyrics, described by critic Steve Huey as 'abstract poetry filled with complicated wordplay, bone-dry wit, cutting social observations, and general misanthropy (sometimes more implied than clearly stated, but apparent nonetheless).'
The group's output is prolific. As of September 2010 they have released 28 studio albums, and more than triple that counting live albums and other releases. They have never achieved widespread public success beyond a handful of minor hit singles in the late 1980s, but have maintained a strong cult following. The band were long associated with BBC disc jockey John Peel, who championed them from early on in their career and cited The Fall as his favourite band, famously explaining, 'They are always different, they are always the same.'. The Fall were the only band who merited a seperate section in John Peel's record collection.
MES does manage the band like a football team, bringing in new talent and mavericks (many he encounters in the pub in Prestwich) acting as foreman. Dave Simpson's book 'The Fallen' is a great guide to the world of The Fall.
The last time I saw them was in Liverpool 2008 when MES had just turned 50. The band's Peel sessions were finally released recently by Castle Records in the six-CD box 'The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004'. This is a good starting point for getting to know the varied music of the band. The lastest album 'Your Future, Our Clutter' is also worth a listen to wet your appetite. Tell 'em I sent you.....

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKC2H0 - The Victoria line is a London Underground line that runs between Brixton in south London and Walthamstow Central in the north-east, via the West End. It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. The southern extension to Brixton opened in 1971, and Pimlico station was added in 1972.
The Victoria line is operated using automatic train operation, but all trains have drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock replaced the original 1967 Tube Stock trains. The line serves 16 stations and all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Transport for London or National Rail services. The line, the most intensively used on the Underground, is used by over 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth-busiest tube line.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K11P0F - Manchester Arena, currently referred to as the AO Arena for sponsorship reasons, is an indoor arena in Manchester, England, immediately north of the city centre and partly above Manchester Victoria station in air rights space. The arena has the highest seating capacity of any indoor venue in the United Kingdom, and the second largest in Europe with a capacity of 21,000.
The arena is one of the world's busiest indoor arenas, hosting music and sporting events such as boxing and swimming.[4] The arena was a key part of Manchester's bids to host the Olympic Games in 1996 and 2000 and was eventually used for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
The arena was temporarily closed following a terror attack on 22 May 2017, in which suicide bomber Salman Abedi killed 22 people, and injured 500 more, at the end of an Ariana Grande concert during her Dangerous Woman Tour. Shows and events that were scheduled to take place at the arena were either moved to alternative venues, or cancelled completely. The arena was reopened on 9 September with a special benefit concert headlined by Manchester-born singer Noel Gallagher.
First proposed during the regeneration of Manchester city centre during the 1980s, the structure was designed by DLA Ellerbe Beckett, Ove Arup & Partners, and Austin-Smith:Lord.
A large truss measuring 105 metres (344 ft) spans the roof. Reinforced concrete is used to increase sound insulation. The upper parts of the building are clad in purple-grey with green glass. The arena was opened on 15 July 1995.
The arena is the only indoor venue in the UK to be built following a layout of 360-degree seating. (London's The O2, formerly the Millennium Dome, also has 360-degree seating, but only on its lower tier, whereas Manchester's arena features it on both tiers). Other European indoor venues built to the same concept include the Lanxess Arena (Cologne, Germany), Arena Zagreb (Zagreb, Croatia), Spaladium Arena (Split, Croatia), Kombank Arena (Belgrade, Serbia)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6PT - Born Meshe David Osinsky and a Lithuanian Jew in Kurkliai, Kaunas province, he came alone to the UK in 1900 to escape the Russian pogroms. He was well-educated, having studied in a yeshiva,[1] but arrived unable to speak English
In 1901, he was staying in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.
Burton's terracotta was usually supplied by the Middleton Fireclay Co. of Leeds
