Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX17RB - Illegal dumping, also called fly dumping or fly tipping (UK), is the dumping of waste illegally instead of using an authorized method such as curbside collection or using an authorized rubbish dump. It is the illegal deposit of any waste onto land, including waste dumped or tipped on a site with no license to accept waste.
Rubbish disposal in the UK is heavily regulated, with most households having on average one 240 litre bin for recyclable waste and one similar bin of non recyclable waste every week
some areas have additional similar or smaller bins for garden, food, or specific recycling waste. Any large rubbish, e.g., old furniture and mattresses, may need to be taken to the local waste depot by the home owner at their own expense, although many councils will collect certain items for free or for a small fee. This leads to some people simply leaving their waste in open public spaces or untended public gardens. This is called fly tipping. In addition, commercial or industrial users may fly-tip to avoid waste handling charges, as will unofficial and unlicensed waste disposal firms.
Taxes on landfill in the UK have led to illegal waste dumping. Materials illegally disposed of can range from green waste and domestic items to abandoned cars and construction waste, much of which may be hazardous or toxic.
As the cost of disposing of household rubbish and waste increases, so does the number of individuals and businesses that fly-tip, and the UK government has made it easier for members of the public to report fly-tipping. The fine or punishment is normally defined by the local council that operates in the local area in which the rubbish was dumped. According to the BBC, fly-tipping costs councils in England and Wales more than ?50m annually (2016)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64TK6 - Eggcup is about food, people and community.
Activities - how the charity spends its money
Intercept surplus food
organise buying cooperative of staple foods
provide training to volunteers
support neighbourhood groups in setting up and running food clubs
provide infrastructure, guidance and support to local food organisations
provide food club services for the benefit of people on low incomes in a manner that support community wellbeing and integration.
Eggcup stops surplus food from going to waste and gets it to people instead. Our low-cost, weekly food scheme helps our members to save money on food, and that makes life more affordable for those in our community on a tight budget.
We have two Community Food Outlets for our members, one in Lancaster and one in the West End of Morecambe. We have a professional 5* food warehouse at our Lancaster base.
Most of the work in our warehouse and outlets is done by volunteers who want to contribute to building a stronger community and making good use of surplus food.
Some of our volunteers are members ? we're all pulling together! We also run a low-cost Buying Cooperative, where we pool our collective buying power to get great discounts. The Buying Cooperative is for Eggcup members and for other community food organisations across the district.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X4D - This image shows a close-up view of a cast iron utility grid embossed with the words Yorkshire Water. The surface displays heavy rusting and weathering, with strong geometric patterns and raised lettering visible across the metal.
Grids and covers of this type form part of the underground water and drainage infrastructure managed by Yorkshire Water, one of the regional water and wastewater providers in England. Such access points allow inspection and maintenance of buried systems that support clean water supply and wastewater management.
The visible corrosion and patina reflect long-term exposure to weather, foot traffic, and vehicle loads, highlighting both the durability of cast iron and the ageing condition of much UK utility infrastructure. Although largely unnoticed by the public, these installations are essential to everyday urban and suburban life.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, typography, and material decay, the image works well as editorial material illustrating public utilities, infrastructure resilience, industrial design, and the often-overlooked physical fabric of water services in Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRAHP8 - Sewage treatment (or domestic wastewater treatment, municipal wastewater treatment) is a type of wastewater treatment which aims to remove contaminants from sewage to produce an effluent that is suitable to discharge to the surrounding environment or an intended reuse application, thereby preventing water pollution from raw sewage discharges. Sewage contains wastewater from households and businesses and possibly pre-treated industrial wastewater. There are a high number of sewage treatment processes to choose from. These can range from decentralized systems (including on-site treatment systems) to large centralized systems involving a network of pipes and pump stations (called sewerage) which convey the sewage to a treatment plant. For cities that have a combined sewer, the sewers will also carry urban runoff (stormwater) to the sewage treatment plant. Sewage treatment often involves two main stages, called primary and secondary treatment, while advanced treatment also incorporates a tertiary treatment stage with polishing processes and nutrient removal. Secondary treatment can reduce organic matter (measured as biological oxygen demand) from sewage,? using aerobic or anaerobic biological processes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC615W - Anger over Grappenhall ?eyesore' site empty for 25 years
ANGER is mounting over an ?eyesore' building in Grappenhall which has been empty for around 25 years.
Grappenhall councillors Ryan Bate and Mike Biggin, along with residents, are growing increasingly frustrated at the condition of the Rectory site, on Church Lane.
Cllr Bate has labelled the state of the property as a ?disgrace'.
It is both an eyesore and a danger ? and has been for too long, he said.
About four years ago Warrington Borough Council (WBC), under pressure from Liberal Democrat councillors, had drawn up plans for a compulsory purchase having gone through a long series of enforcement steps.
Then at the eleventh hour the owner died.
Since then, the ownership has been going through a long and protracted probate process, perhaps deliberately so.
From what I hear, the owners had a number of similar historic properties across Cheshire and their working model seemed to be to allow them to fall into a state of disrepair.
I'm not sure what their endgame would be but could speculate.
The two Liberal Democrat councillors have also vowed to continue pressing council chief executive Steven Broomhead over the situation.
Cllr Bate added: Mike and I are in the process of asking for a further update from WBC and are asking Mr Broomhead to intervene to ensure that this is made a priority as it has been an ongoing issue for too long and no suitable solution seems to be within a satisfactory timeframe.
Town Hall chiefs have acknowledged the concerns from residents as they continue to assess the situation.
A WBC spokesman said: The Rectory has been vacant for approximately 25 years.
Its ownership has been a complex issue and we are prioritising a solution as it is unfair on the residents and visitors to this beautiful part of Grappenhall to continue to witness it in its dilapidated state.

A WBC spokesman said: The Rectory has been vacant for approximately 25 years.
Its ownership has been a complex issue and we are prioritising a solution as it is unfair on the residents and visitors to this beautiful part of Grappenhall to continue to witness it in its dilapidated state.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AEDHXN - Hit the North is a 1987 song by British post-punk band the Fall. The lyrics were composed by band leader Mark E. Smith with the music written by Simon Rogers and Brix Smith. It was released as a single in October 1987 and reached number 57 on the UK singles chart. According to Tom Doyle of Sound on Sound, the song is a rousing groove?based anthem which is now regarded by many as both their ultimate statement and best single.
The record was part of a conscious approach by Brix Smith and Simon Rogers, both of whom had recently joined the band, in increasing the Fall's popularity and accessibility. Brix Smith said: It was definitely a conscious thing on my part because they were so, so underground and so unappreciated and unknown. I just thought they were such an important band and it needed to be broadcast all over the world. Her husband at the time, Mark E. Smith, disagreed: ..it wasn't a conscious effort. It was just trying to get it a bit more punchy. I always like it very clean and simple. A lot of groups are swamped with sound.
The music was written by Rogers and Brix Smith, and recorded by Rogers on his newly-acquired Sequential Circuits Studio 440 sequencer-sampler. Rogers said literally the first thing I put into it was a bass and a snare just on two pads, a little tiny Indian bell... and a sax note and a bass note from a Gentle Giant record. When Rogers demonstrated the instrument to Mark E. Smith, Smith said: What's that music? I'll have that, just do me a tape. Smith recorded a demo, with the original programmed drums removed
on the final recording they are replaced by samples of Simon Wolstencroft's drumming. The song was recorded in Abbey Road Studios in July 1987, during the sessions for the band's album The Frenz Experiment, with Rogers as producer and Ian Grimble as recording engineer. Guitar and vocal distortions and other effects were added in the studio.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJMR - Get ready for Brexit' advertising campaign launches
An information campaign urging the public to get ready for Brexit has been launched by the government.
The campaign began on Sunday with the launch of a website, gov.uk/brexit.
Billboards and social media adverts will appear in the coming days and TV adverts will air later this month.
Michael Gove, who is in charge of no-deal plans, said the adverts encourage shared responsibility for preparing to leave the EU on 31 October.
It has been reported that the campaign could cost as much as ?100m as ministers seek to inform people what they might need to do, if anything, ahead of the deadline.
Meanwhile, it has emerged the EU is considering classifying no deal as a major disaster, like an earthquake, in order to free up funds for countries affected.
Benedict Pringle, author of the politicaladvertising.co.uk blog, said that, if true, the ?100m budget would be roughly double what the National Lottery spends on advertising each year.
So if you think about how often you see a lottery advert and double it, that's how much we could be seeing the campaign over the next two months, he told the BBC.
At football grounds, in advert breaks for Coronation Street and The Great British Bake Off, this is where you'll get the biggest reach with the public.
Media captionMichael Gove: 'Everyone will have the food they need'
What does the campaign involve?
An image showing one of the campaign's billboards was issued by the Cabinet Office ahead of their rollout this week.
Leaflets, online seminars, and information stands at events will also be used.
British citizens who are intending to travel to Europe and businesses which export to the EU are among the specific groups targeted by the campaign.
The campaign encourages people and businesses to visit the government website to answer questions and receive advice on preparing for Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X7N - Charging for green bin collections - FAQs
Why are you charging for these collections?
We have a reduced budget from central government and we can no longer subsidise the cost of collecting this additional waste. The decision to charge for garden waste collections is one of the many difficult decisions the council has faced to help reduce costs.
There's no legal requirement to provide a kerbside collection service for garden waste. But where it does we can make a charge. The income from charging for garden waste collections will make the service self-financing. Many councils across the country charge for this service and have done for many years.
Not all properties in Warrington require a garden waste collections service as they may not have a garden. For this reason it is also felt that introducing a charge is fair as the service will only be paid for by those households that choose to use it, in the same way that charges are only made for bulky waste collections to those households that request one.
Why is there an increase on last year's subscription?
We've had to increase the price of both online and offline subscriptions to meet with rising operational costs, in particular to meet the increased cost of collection and tipping.
Don't I already pay for this service through my council tax?
Although your council tax is collected locally it actually forms part of a national taxation framework. This means that your tax isn't just calculated in relation to specific council services, such as waste collection or other community facilities and services. Your council tax payment contributes and finances all local council services not just waste collection.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGP339 - Tire recycling, or rubber recycling, is the process of recycling waste tires that are no longer suitable for use on vehicles due to wear or irreparable damage. These tires are a challenging source of waste, due to the large volume produced, the durability of the tires, and the components in the tire that are ecologically problematic.
Because tires are highly durable and non-biodegradable, they can consume valued space in landfills. In 1990, it was estimated that over 1 billion scrap tires were in stockpiles in the United States. As of 2015, only 67 million tires remain in stockpiles. From 1994 to 2010, the European Union increased the amount of tires recycled from 25% of annual discards to nearly 95%, with roughly half of the end-of-life tires used for energy, mostly in cement manufacturing.
Newer technology, such as pyrolysis and devulcanization, has made tires suitable targets for recycling despite their bulk and resilience. Aside from use as fuel, the main end use for tires remains ground rubber.
In 2017, 13% of U.S. tires removed from their primary use were sold in the used tire market. Of the tires that were scrapped, 43% were burnt as tire-derived fuel, with cement manufacturing the largest user, another 25% were used to make ground rubber, 8% were used in civil engineering projects, 17% were disposed of in landfills and 8% had other uses

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E5 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England. The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer ? get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9XYC - The town's three community recycling centres (CRCs) are located in Stockton Heath, on Sandy Lane, Gatewarth, on Barnard Street, and Woolston, on New Cut Lane.
The village site was saved in 2014 following a huge public outcry over plans to shut it.
A petition opposing any proposed closure was launched in April after the Warrington Guardian revealed the tip had been earmarked for closure.
The petition, which has secured more than 3,000 signatures, has been submitted to the authority.
During Tuesday's executive board meeting, members approved plans to carry out a six-week consultation 'on the current and potential future provision of waste recycling services' at the facility.
In her report to members, Cllr Judith Guthrie, executive board member for environment and public protection, said: Given the current site constraints of Stockton Heath, with particular regard to the size and access restrictions, together with the impact on immediate neighbours, officers understand that obtaining the required environmental permit would be challenging, in respect to both achieving technical and environmental specification compliance.
However, before any decision is made on the future of Stockton Heath, we propose to undertake a consultation on the provision of waste recycling services at the site to obtain consultees' views on future options.
The current budget for the operation of the three CRCs is ?854,854, which includes disposal and management fee haulage costs.
However, the cost of operating these sites in 2017-18 was ?1,149,110 ? an overspend of ?294,256.
Deputy council leader Cllr Russ Bowden said: What is clear to me is, if we are designing a waste system for Warrington with a blank sheet of paper, it would not look anything like this.
I think what we can see is the Stockton Heath site is far more expensive to run than the other two.
It is right the council consults with the public about the future provision of that site.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWFM - South West Trains (SWT) is a British train operating company owned by Stagecoach Group operating the South Western franchise.
It operates the majority of commuter services from its Central London terminus at London Waterloo to South West London as well as most outer suburban/regional services in Surrey, Hampshire and Dorset. It also provides regional services in Devon, Somerset, Berkshire, and Wiltshire and on the Isle of Wight. The area of operation, essentially the former South Western division of Network SouthEast, is also roughly that of the pre-1923 London and South Western Railway (excluding everything west of Exeter). The Stagecoach Group took over the franchise on the privatisation of British Rail in 1996 and retained it in 2004 and again in 2007 making it, along with Chiltern Railways, Virgin Trains and First Great Western, the longest-running franchise. It is a particularly complex operation due to the large number and variety of services.

With sustainability and innovation at its heart the objective of the programme has been to construct a building that is adaptable and flexible in its operation, highly efficient in the consumption of resources, but also economically viable and replicable. 1 Angel Square has been designed to deliver a 50% reduction in energy consumption compared to our current Manchester complex and an 80% reduction in carbon. This will lead to a reduction in operating costs of up to a third.
The building will be powered by a pure plant oil fed Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system and will utilise rapeseed oil which is grown on The Co-operative's own farm land. Excess energy can be supplied back to the grid and utilised by the wider NOMA development with waste energy being sent through an absorption chiller, used to cool the building.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9B2X - One Angel Square[1] is an office building in Manchester, England. Construction work began in 2010 and was completed in February 2013. The landmark building is the head office of the Co-operative Group. Standing 72.5 metres (237.8 feet) tall, the building forms the centrepiece of the new ?800 million NOMA development in the northern quarter of Manchester city centre. The building cost at least ?105 million to construct and was sold on leaseback terms in 2013 for ?142 million.
One Angel Square is one of the most sustainable large buildings in Europe and is built to a BREEAM 'Outstanding' rating.[12] It is powered by a biodiesel cogeneration plant using rapeseed oil to provide electricity and heat.[10] The structure makes use of natural resources, maximising passive solar gain for heat and using natural ventilation through its double-skin facade, adiabatic cooling, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling and waste heat recycling.
The building's distinctive form has been compared to a sliced egg and a ship. Its design was announced by architects 3DReid in May 2009 and construction began in July 2010 with a projected completion date in March 2013. In December 2012, the scheme surpassed its pan-European sustainability aims and achieved a world-record BREEAM score of 95.32%. It is also an energy-plus building, producing surplus energy and zero carbon emissions. The building has received numerous awards for its striking aesthetic and sustainability aims.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D91FA9 - Three Wheelie bins for different uses in a street, Warrington, Cheshire, England WA4 2PL
The wheelie bin is a waste container on wheels designed to make it easier for users to transport heavy loads of refuse to the curb or other pick-up point. More recently it has application for transporting stolen goods on bin day in residential suburbs. George Dempster invented the Dempster-Dumpster system in the 1930s for automatically loading the contents of standardized mobile steel containers onto the dustcart.
This led to the classic Dempster Dumpmaster waste collection vehicle of the 1950s, but wheelie bins did not become commonplace until the 1970s. The term dumpster is frequently used as a generic term for a large MGB or the non-mobile variety (known as a skip in the UK or Australia) in the United States. In the US residential wheelie bins are also generically called Herbie Curbies.
The modern bin is a German invention of the 1970s in a patent held by Schneider, and licensed to other companies outside Germany. The smaller wheelie bins, for domestic or light commercial use, typically hold 120 to 360 litres (26 to 79 imp gal
32 to 95 US gal), with 240 litres (53 imp gal
63 US gal) being the most common. They have a hinged flap lid and two wheels on the bottom on the same side as the lid hinge. There is a bar behind the hinge on the top of the bin which is used to move it, or to hoist it up onto a garbage truck for emptying.
The 240 litre bin is usually considered to have the same capacity as three traditional waste containers. In the UK, wheelie bins for non-recyclable domestic waste are currently collected either weekly or once a fortnight, depending on the local Council's waste management policies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E6 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BM3JP6 - Non-flushing water closets?portable pieces of furniture with removable containers for waste?became the standard in pre-Victorian Britain, though many households continued to rely on the backyard privy. The problem of waste disposal?whether from a chamber pot or from an overused hole in the ground?remained.
The Victorians made the connection between unsanitary conditions and disease that the Elizabethans hadn't and developed municipal sewer systems to try to keep their cities cleaner. The problem was that they didn't have a good way of connecting individual households to the system. Non-flushing water closets could be dressed up, but their contents couldn't be taken out. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries (about the same time the sewers were built), English patents were granted for several different types of water-closet valves, but their flushing actions were pretty inefficient. The wall mounted cistern that became popular in the 1870s vastly improved the situation because it provided a large volume of water under more pressure. Water-closet bowls remained a problem, though, because their rudimentary traps didn't do a very good job of either letting waste go down the drain or keeping sewer gases out of the building. At first these bowls were made of earthenware and glazed with sometimes-elaborate designs. In 1885, Thomas Twyford built the first vitreous china toilet, inspiring competition from other notable English potteries such as Wedgwood and Doulton
it wasn't long before vitreous china became the standard for the fledgling industry.
American inventors were also seeking solutions to the problem of building a sanitary water closet. As early as 1875, James Henry and William Campbell patented a plunger-type water closet
over the next 50 or so years more than 350 applications for patents for various types of water-closet designs were received by the U.S. patent office. In 1907

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC6203 - Anger over Grappenhall ?eyesore' site empty for 25 years
ANGER is mounting over an ?eyesore' building in Grappenhall which has been empty for around 25 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2GE - Today we are launching our new public information campaign, ?Get Ready for Brexit', which will run across television, social media, billboards and other platforms.
Government research shows that only 50% of the population think it's likely the UK will leave the EU on 31 October, 42% of small-to-medium sized businesses are unsure of how they can get ready and just 31% of the British public have looked for information on how to prepare for Brexit.
The campaign will tackle this head on by setting out what all members of the public and business owners might need to do, if anything, to get ready to leave the EU on 31 October.
Audiences including UK citizens intending to travel to Europe and all exporters to the EU will be targeted, alongside groups requiring particular information such as the equine industry and legal professions. Some of the key actions audiences need to take include:
Acquiring an Economic Operator Registration and Identification number to export to the EU. Businesses that are VAT registered will automatically issued an EORI number, but micro businesses still need to register themselves.
Obtaining the correct documents to transport goods at the border.
Applying for the vital support packages available for businesses, such as grants.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H8FKEG - Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a coal fired power station located in Warrington, Cheshire, in North West England, which is capable of co-firing biomass. It is situated on the north bank of the River Mersey between the towns of Widnes and Warrington. Opened in 1971, the station has a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts (MW). In a bid to combine efforts at the design and construction stages the Boiler and Turbo-generator plant were replicated at West Burton power station located between Retford and Gainsborough in North Nottinghamshire.
Since the privatisation of the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1990, the station has been operated by various companies. Since 2004, Scottish and Southern Energy plc have operated the station.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney the station is a prominent landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines.
