Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENJFJ - Saturday afternoon session at Grappenhall Beer Festival 2026, held at the Bellhouse and Grappenhall Youth and Community Association in Warrington, Cheshire, with visitors seated outside in the beer garden during a May community event. The image shows drinkers and festival-goers gathered around tables beside the brick community building, with umbrellas, marquees, beer festival signs and a relaxed village atmosphere. The 2026 festival was promoted as taking place on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May, bringing together real ales, ciders, food, live music and local fundraising at Grappenhall Community Centre. This documentary image is useful for editorial and commercial features about British beer festivals, real ale culture, CAMRA-style drinking traditions, community pubs and clubs, village events, social gatherings, weekend leisure and outdoor hospitality. The scene appears to have been photographed in daylight under mixed spring weather, with cloudy skies, bright intervals and people dressed for a cool but pleasant May afternoon. The photograph has strong local interest for Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire and the North West of England, while also working more broadly for stories about beer gardens, community centres, volunteer-run events, charity fundraising, independent brewing, cask ale, cider, local festivals and social life. The Bellhouse is a charity-run hub on Bellhouse Lane, and the festival setting reflects the role of community venues in bringing residents together for conversation, music, food and drink. The image can also illustrate responsible social drinking, local tourism, village identity, weekend recreation, outdoor seating, hospitality trade resilience and the continuing popularity of beer festivals beyond large city centres. Details such as patio tables, plastic glasses, garden furniture, festival signage, marquees and mixed-age groups help place the scene clearly as a real local event rather than a staged lifestyle image.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGWM98 - Busy indoor bar area at Grappenhall Beer Festival, held at The Bellhouse, home of Grappenhall Youth and Community Association in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire. The image shows a crowded community beer festival interior with drinkers gathered around a temporary bar, casks and handpulls lined up on the right, beer labels visible above the pumps, people holding pint glasses, a beer programme on a table and the warm social atmosphere of a village real ale event. The festival is useful for editorial coverage of British beer culture, real ale, cask ale, local breweries, community fundraising, village events, hospitality, weekend leisure, social drinking, volunteers, beer tasting and the continuing appeal of traditional beer festivals in North West England. The Bellhouse describes itself as a charity-run community hub in the heart of Grappenhall, offering events, room hire, clubs and social spaces, and its events page lists Grappenhall Beer Festival as an annual highlight featuring local and guest ales, food and live entertainment. Ticketing information for 2026 described Grappenhall Beer Festival as Real Ale, Ciders and Live Music , presented by Grappenhall Youth & Community Association, while local coverage said the 2026 event would take place on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May at Grappenhall Community Centre. The photograph captures the practical working side of the festival, with a busy queue at the bar, beer pumps, casks, volunteers and customers choosing drinks rather than a staged publicity view. Visible details such as the wooden floor, festival signage, beer tokens or programme, pint glasses, casual clothing and crowded bar line make it a strong documentary image for stories about community venues, local fundraising, beer festivals, the real ale movement, pub culture outside pubs, village social life and the wider role of volunteer-run events in keeping community facilities active. The indoor setting suggests a mild spring evening or weekend session

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEBH - Photograph of the Horace Banner memorial stained glass window inside Grappenhall Independent Methodist Church, Barton Avenue, Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire. The tall arched window shows a Christian mission scene with a gold cross above clouds and blue rays of light, a waterfall, green palms and a small boat below. The readable biblical wording includes Go ye therefore and teach all nations and I am with you always even unto the end of the world , a passage associated with the Great Commission in the Gospel of Matthew. The image is suitable for editorial use around Methodist heritage, nonconformist Christianity, church art, memorial windows, religious teaching and local history in Cheshire.
The composition shows the stained glass set within a pointed church arch, with dark interior shadows around the window and small side panels visible on either side. The strong colours, including blue, red, green, white and gold, make the image useful for searches connected with religious stained glass, biblical illustration, Christian symbolism, chapel interiors and worship spaces. The waterfall, boat and tropical plants give the window a narrative quality, suggesting travel, evangelism, baptismal water and spreading Christian faith.
This image has local value for Grappenhall, Warrington and Cheshire history, especially where editorial buyers need visual material connected to Independent Methodist congregations, chapel architecture, remembrance and faith communities outside the Church of England. As a stock photograph it can illustrate articles about Methodism, local chapels, religious memorials, stained glass conservation, Christian education, scripture in art, public worship, village heritage and the continuing role of small churches in English community life. The Horace Banner association adds a personal and commemorative dimension, although individual biographical detail should be checked against church records before any more specific claim is made.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE74K - The Rams Head public house in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, is shown during a cold winter period in January with light snow covering the ground and a decorated Christmas tree standing outside the pub. The historic building, with its mix of brickwork and traditional architectural features, is set against clear blue skies and low winter sunlight, which highlights the textures of the walls, roof and surrounding outdoor seating areas. Snow settled on benches and pathways reinforces the seasonal setting and the crisp atmosphere of a winter's day in rural England.
Village pubs such as the Rams Head have long played an important role in British social and cultural life, acting as meeting places, landmarks and centres of community activity. During the winter and festive season, pubs often become visual symbols of warmth and tradition, even when photographed without people present. The Christmas tree outside the pub adds a seasonal focal point, linking the image to themes of celebration, tradition and continuity within English village life.
The photograph reflects wider themes of British pub culture, hospitality, leisure and local identity, as well as seasonal change and winter weather in the United Kingdom. It is suitable for editorial use in travel and lifestyle features, hospitality coverage, festive and winter-themed publications, calendars and broader cultural storytelling focused on traditional England, rural communities and the enduring presence of village pubs within the countryside.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75H - The Parr Arms public house stands alongside St Wilfrid's Church on Church Lane in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, photographed during a cold winter period in January with light snow visible on the ground and outdoor seating areas. The white-painted pub, a Robinsons Brewery tied house, is shown in the foreground, while the red sandstone tower of St Wilfrid's Church rises behind it, creating a distinctive and recognisable village scene. Clear blue skies and low winter sunlight emphasise the textures of the church stonework and the contrasting surfaces of the pub exterior.
The pairing of pub and parish church reflects a long-established pattern within English village life, where places of worship and social gathering sit side by side at the heart of the community. In winter conditions, particularly with snow and frost present, these buildings take on a heightened sense of tradition, continuity and calm. The absence of people adds to the quiet atmosphere, reinforcing themes of stillness, reflection and seasonal change.
St Wilfrid's Church, an Anglican parish church with medieval origins, represents the religious heritage of the village, while the Parr Arms embodies British pub culture and hospitality. Together, they illustrate the social and cultural fabric of rural England, where faith, leisure and community life intersect. The image lends itself to a wide range of editorial uses, including travel features, heritage publications, lifestyle articles, calendars and broader storytelling focused on traditional England, village identity and winter landscapes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75M - The sign for St Wilfrid's Parish Church in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, is shown during a cold winter period in January with snow settled on the surrounding wall and ground. The red church notice board, displaying service information and parish details, stands prominently against clear blue skies, while frost and snow emphasise the seasonal conditions. In the foreground, memorial plaques commemorate the Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and the Platinum Jubilee in 2022 of Queen Elizabeth II, linking the church and village directly to national moments of royal celebration and remembrance.
St Wilfrid's Church is an Anglican parish church with deep historical roots in the village, and the presence of jubilee memorials reflects the long-standing connection between the Church of England, the British monarchy and local communities. The image captures a moment where religion, monarchy and village identity intersect, with the winter setting adding a sense of stillness, reflection and continuity. The absence of people allows the focus to rest on the symbols of heritage and commemoration rather than daily activity.
Beyond its local significance, the photograph lends itself to wider editorial use in stories about British royal history, public remembrance, community memorials and the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. It also works as a visual representation of traditional English village life, seasonal change and the role of parish churches as custodians of local and national history. The winter snow and clear light enhance its suitability for heritage publications, educational material, calendars and broader cultural features exploring identity, memory and continuity in Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75P - The Parr Arms, a traditional British public house tied to Robinsons Brewery, stands in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, photographed during a cold winter period in January with light snow covering the pub garden and surrounding paved areas. The white-painted pub building, with its distinctive signage, wrought iron gates and lantern-style lights, is shown under clear blue skies and low winter sunlight, which highlights the crisp textures of the exterior and the contrast between snow, brickwork and painted surfaces.
Village pubs such as the Parr Arms have long played an important role in English social life, acting as community meeting places and focal points for rural villages. In winter, particularly during periods of frost and snow, these pubs take on an additional sense of warmth and familiarity, even when photographed without people present. The quiet, undisturbed setting enhances the feeling of calm and nostalgia often associated with traditional English pubs in the countryside.
The image reflects wider themes of British pub culture, hospitality, leisure and local identity, as well as seasonal change and winter weather in England. As a Robinsons Brewery tied house, the pub also represents the long-established brewing traditions of the North West of England. The combination of heritage architecture, village setting and winter snow makes the photograph suitable for editorial use in travel features, lifestyle publications, hospitality coverage, calendars and broader cultural storytelling focused on traditional England and rural community life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75T - The Old Vicarage on Church Lane in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, is shown during a cold winter period in January with light snow settled on the ground and surrounding vegetation. The former vicarage, a historic residential building associated with the nearby parish church, has stood vacant and unused for over a decade and is seen enclosed by fencing, with boarded or empty windows and visible signs of long-term neglect. Clear blue skies and low winter sunlight highlight the texture of the stonework and the stark condition of the property, while frost and snow reinforce the sense of abandonment.
The image reflects wider themes of empty homes, unused buildings and the challenges of maintaining historic properties within rural English villages. Once an integral part of local religious and community life, the former vicarage now represents a period of decline and inactivity, contrasting with the surrounding settled village environment. The absence of people and the quiet winter setting add to the feeling of pause and uncertainty, emphasising the passage of time and the impact of prolonged vacancy.
Now under offer for development, the building also symbolises renewal and change, sitting at the intersection of heritage, housing demand and regeneration. The photograph lends itself to editorial use in stories about the British housing market, regeneration of historic buildings, adaptive reuse, planning and development, and the broader issue of empty homes within the UK. Seasonal winter conditions and the rural Cheshire setting further widen its suitability for use in discussions of climate, countryside change and traditional village life undergoing transition.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75X - St Wilfrid's Church, the historic Anglican parish church of Grappenhall, stands on Church Lane near Warrington in Cheshire, England, photographed during a cold winter period in January with a light covering of snow settled across the churchyard. The red sandstone church, largely dating from the medieval period and designated as a Grade I listed building, is shown surrounded by old gravestones, boundary walls and mature trees stripped of leaves by the winter season. Frost and snow accentuate the textures of the stonework and memorials, while clear blue skies and low winter sunlight create sharp contrast and a calm, crisp atmosphere.
The scene reflects the quiet, reflective character often associated with English village churches in winter, when activity is subdued and the landscape feels paused. The snow-covered churchyard evokes themes of time, memory and continuity, with gravestones marking generations of local history and community life. The absence of people enhances the sense of stillness and contemplation, making the image suitable for use in editorial contexts exploring spirituality, faith, remembrance and the passage of time.
Grappenhall is a historic Cheshire village now forming part of the wider Warrington area in North West England, and St Wilfrid's Church has long been a focal point for religious worship, local identity and cultural heritage. The photograph captures both the architectural significance of the building and its role within the rural English landscape, set against seasonal weather conditions typical of winter in Britain. As well as illustrating religious heritage, the image lends itself to wider themes including British history, traditional village life, the English countryside, seasonal change, climate and weather, and the enduring presence of historic landmarks within modern communities.
The combination of winter snow, historic architecture and tranquil rural setting makes the image suitable for travel features, heritage publications etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTRJ - Steam traction engine O.H.M.S., registration MA7892, travels through Lymm village centre in Warrington, Cheshire, towing a passenger trailer during the December Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival. The preserved road steam vehicle is shown in steam with smoke rising from its chimney, polished red and black paintwork, large spoked wheels, brass detail, festive wreath decoration and a trailer carrying visitors through the historic village streets. Lymm Dickensian is a long-running volunteer-led community Christmas event, begun in 1985 and centred on Victorian dress, stalls, street entertainment, Santa activities, festive food, processions and seasonal atmosphere. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of heritage transport, steam traction engines, vintage vehicles, Christmas fairs, village festivals, community events, Cheshire tourism, Warrington heritage, industrial history, road steam preservation and family days out. Steam traction engines and road locomotives were once practical working machines used for haulage, agricultural tasks, showmen's work and local industry, but today they survive mainly through preservation societies, rallies, transport days and enthusiast owners. The photograph captures the pleasure and spectacle of a full-size steam vehicle operating slowly in a village setting, with wet roads, winter clothing, passengers, event barriers and town-centre buildings adding a documentary seasonal feel. It can support stories about Lymm's festive traditions, volunteer event organisation, road closures, historic transport displays, traction engine preservation, public nostalgia, engineering heritage, Christmas parades and the continuing popularity of steam power at local events. The O.H.M.S. name and MA7892 registration are visible on the engine front, although the exact maker and build history should be checked from owner or rally programme notes before making detailed claims about manufacturer or date.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RY1R1J - Thelwall Morris Men were formed in October 1973, the nucleus of the side being a group of regulars from the Thelwall Folk Club at the Pickering Arms, which was run by Maggie and Rod Goodall.
All of these men were absolute beginners. Some had seen morris dancing at Keele University Folk Festival earlier in the year and fancied trying it. The only trouble was how to get started?
The answer proved to be a small ad in Folk Review magazine, asking for someone to come and teach the dance. Around this time, Chris Maple, who became the side's first squire and foreman had arrived in the North West to take up a job in Liverpool. Chris proved well equal to the task of getting his raw recruits off on the right foot (or in our case, the left).
The side's first musician was Fred Horrobin (Maggie's dad) who busked on accordion for a couple of weeks until someone unearthed the exceptionally talented Steve Burgess from downtown Stockton Heath. Under Chris's tuition, the side learned an assortment of Cotswold dances, mainly Bampton and Adderbury to begin with. The first public performance took place, without baldricks and badges, at the Pickering Arms in August 1974 before a sceptical audience of wives and girlfriends and members of the folk club.
By 1975 the side had acquired it's kit. Black breeches and shoes, white shirt and socks, with baldricks of pale blue and claret surmounted by a distinctive badge representing the wall of Thells or stakes from which Thelwall, England's smallest city, derived its name in Anglo-Saxon times.
The side's first invitation to a day of dance was from Southport Swords in May 1975, and the inexperienced side made a favourable impression. The following year they attended their first Ring Meeting at Thaxted and have attended a Ring Meeting almost every year since then.
In 1977, the side visited Ireland for the Cobh festival, quickly followed, in 1979, by an invitation to Mallow, Ireland

The meeting will take place at the Royal British Legion, doors opening at 7pm for the meeting to start at 7.30. Representatives and individual members of all village organisations will be very welcome.
We've been looking back at the way the village came together to celebrate 1000 years in 1923 and 1050 years in 1973. In 1923, Thelwall's celebrations helped to fund a new war memorial (Bell Lane), dedicated in 1925. So successful was the event that the pub was drunk dry and the caterers ran out of food and drinks. In May 1973, Thelwall Youth and Community Association organised Festival 1050 “ a four day event with a folk festival, a piano recital by Stephen Hough, an arts and crafts exhibition in the school and a procession that saw Miss Thelwall (Carol Moss) brought across the Manchester Ship Canal by the ferry boat where she was met by the Thelwall Rose Queen (Julie Lager) to a fanfare. They then joined a procession of vintage cars round the village.
If you have any memorabilia, photos, films or memories from these events, we would like to hear from you. You can email thelwallhistorygroup@gmail.com

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG4759 - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873“74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 1873“74 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000
A series of concerts of classical music entitled Live at St Wilfrid's is hosted by the church, and includes performances by both young artists and by performers with international reputations
On the outside of the church, immediately below the west window, is a carving of a cat and it is suggested that this might be the origin of the Cheshire cat. A sundial in the churchyard is dated 1714 and is listed at Grade II. At set of stocks at the entrance to the churchyard, also listed at Grade II, have endstones probably dating from the 17th century. The churchyard also contains five war graves of British service personnel, two from World War I and three from World War II

The bar at the Village Hall has been run under licence, free form tie, by Derek & Alison Massey since July 2004, and is now managed by their son, Chris Massey.
The bar was originally set up by the Village Hall committee, but due to the Hall's charitable status, is now run separately with a rent payable. It still operates as a stock-photo/gotonysmith-Members.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>members bar although visitors are welcome for a nominal fee and a visitors book exists for this purpose.
When originally opened, the bar was tied to John Smith's Brewery but quickly became free from tie and was amongst the first outlets in the area to stock real ale. We now regularly feature in the CAMRA Club of the Year contest and are awarded for the condition of the seven ever-changing real ales on offer. We currently hold the title for the Local and Regional CAMRA Club of the Year, and are in the final 4 for the whole country.
The Village Hall offers a warm welcome to members in the cosy lounge or more spacious hall, and as well as our excellent real ales, we also have a well stocked bar offering an excellent range of beers, wines and spirits and in particular, Gin!

The thumbnail shows a memorial structure, inscriptions, wreaths or surrounding greenery, so the emphasis is remembrance, civic memory, parish identity and the way public memorials remain visible in ordinary streets. The First World War changed even small communities, and memorials later adapted with Second World War names have become everyday civic landmarks as well as places of formal remembrance. For stock photography use, the value is in the precise subject: Parish of Lower Walton, war memorial ,1914 WWI, Ellesmere Road, Lower Walton, Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4 6EG. It can support articles and publications about First World War remembrance, Second World War memory, civic identity, Remembrance Sunday, local casualties, parish heritage, public memorial, military history, community memory, veterans stories, as well as more specific searches using Stockton Heath, lest we forget, remembrance, Ellesmere Road, war memorial, parish of Lower Walton, 1914, WWI, parish of Walton, in proud memory, Warrington, WA4, Cheshire, Lower Walton, WA4 6EG, white, cross, parish. The composition also gives space for tighter crops, captions, web thumbnails, report illustrations and social media use, while the Alamy reference 2K3J78R and the row caption help connect the image to a real place rather than a vague concept. The picture can be used by writers covering heritage, conservation, planning, tourism, retail, transport, public services, nostalgia, local identity, architectural survival, industrial change and the way familiar objects or buildings continue to carry meaning in modern Britain. The memorial form, inscriptions and setting allow the image to support both national remembrance themes

At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JD0MFP - Lymm and Thelwall to be moved from Warrington South to Tatton electoral ward
Lymm and Thelwall look set to become part of the Tatton constituency under a shakeup of England's electoral map.
The Boundary Commission for England has revealed a raft of proposed changes across the country, with just under 10 per cent of existing constituencies remaining unchanged.
In Warrington, the most drastic changes can be found in Warrington South “ which will lose Lymm and Thelwall to Tatton, currently held by Tory MP Esther McVey.
Warrington North is almost entirely unchanged, save for minor changes which will see the Westbrook Centre moved to Warrington South and part of Chetham Court at Winwick Quay “ home to businesses including Tenpin Warrington, formerly LA Bowl “ switched in the opposite direction.
Proposals are due to be implemented in 2023, and aim to ensure that each constituency has roughly the same number of voters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JB87A1 - St Oswald's Church, is in the village of Winwick, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Winwick.
History
A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580. Much damage was done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank. The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847“49 for the 13th Earl of Derby. The spire was rebuilt and the church was restored in 1869 by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. On Thursday 13 January 1887, Titanic Captain Edward Smith married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in the church. In 1931“32 Henry Paley successor in the Lancaster architectural practice, now known as Austin and Paley, restored the tower at a cost of £463, and in 1934 he added a new vestry, porch and entrance at a cost of £232
The church is built of sandstone with a metal, stainless steel, roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a nave of six bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chapel in the east bay of each aisle, a chancel and sanctuary of three bays, and a north vestry. The south chapel is the Legh Chapel and the north chapel belonged to the Gerard family. The tower is in three stages and has a recessed spire. On the west face is a door above which is a three-light window.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C5R3AA - Bawming the Thorn' in Appleton Thorn Village
Appleton Thorn village is the only village in England where the 'Bawming the Thorn' ceremony takes place. This ceremony take place on the 3rd Saturday of June every year. The thorn tree, which stands beside the church, is believed to be an offshoot of the Glastonbury thorn, which grew from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea. Adam de Dutton, a knight of the Crusades and local landowner, brought it to Appleton. Bawming, which means, decorating the the tree with flowers and ribbons, takes place whilst local children (our 6 class) dance and sing the Bawming song.
The Bawming Committee are always looking for new members to get involved to help maintain this unique celebration. If you would like to help in any way, please contact the Committee at: bawming@appletonthorn.org.uk

In the early 1800 (1805 “ 1808 ˜ish) a house stood at the corner of London Road and Walton Road which was the home of Edward Fenna and his family who was the Parish Constable. Outside the house were the Parish Stocks (removed 1850). The house was called the Stone Jug . Fenna would not have had a uniform and was unpaid for the work he did, which was not a lot. He would walk the streets with a lantern at night and have a rattle for attracting attention. He did get paid expenses for duties such as relief of the poor, flogging people and putting people in the stocks, etc.
In 1864 a single storey building was built on the existing site and there was one Sergeant and one PC for the village. The area outside the Police Station (Victoria Square) was called ˜Pigeon Bank' and belonged to the Police Station. Every year the fairground from Warrington (Silcocks) would stop at Stockton Heath on their way to Stoke. With the permission of Sgt. Norris they set up their tents, Dobbie horses (roundabouts), Coconut Shy's etc. It is recorded that one year Sgt. Norris' son who was ˜of age' (over 12 generally) came out of the Police Station, jumped on a Dobbie Horse and broke it.
In 1911 that Police Station was closed and demolished with a new Police Station opening the following year. The dates are to be seen on the headers of the drainpipes.
The new Station incorporated a Magistrate's Court and living quarters for the Inspector. Gas lamps, some of which can still be seen in the cells, illuminated the Police Station. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP2B - Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival takes place in Lymm each year, and spreads good tidings and Christmas cheer!
When does the Lymm Dickensian Festival take place?
The Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival is an annual event, which has taken place for over a quarter of a century in Lymm Village. It is held on the second Saturday in December and is organised and run by the Lymm Dickensian Charity Committee.
Every year the Lymm community comes together with the support of the Lymm Parish Council to take the village back in time to a different era, when Dickens was alive, and where you might see Ebenezer Scrooge strolling through the streets. All of the community becomes involved, and Father Christmas himself takes time out of his busy pre Christmas schedule to attend the event.
There is a festival parade to entertain visitors, where you will see floats from local schools, vintage cars and horse-drawn carriages and of course Santa and his elves. Throughout the village there will be stalls selling local goods, and spreading Christmas cheer. Punch and Judy also take a turn to entertain, along with jugglers, street performers, musicians and Morris Dancers.
It's all in a good cause
All of the profits raised by the Lymm Dickensian Charity Committee each year are donated to a chosen charity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGE2 - The existing building was built in 1893, and is listed as being of architectural and historical importance to the village. There has been an inn or hotel on the same site for much longer and the village of Grappenhall itself is recorded as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. The image of a grinning cat carved into the tower on St. Wilfrids Church is believed to be the inspiration for Lewis Carolls Cheshire cat in Alices Adventures in Wonderland. One of the many unique features of The Rams Head Inn is the original village well, situated near the bar. The well actually pre-dates the existing building at about 150 years old, but is now fitted with walkover glass and illuminated from the inside. A large outside eating and drinking patio is located behind the pub next to the large car park. Boasting five hand pumps with three permanent ales and two guests at busy times from the Priory Inns range. Quiz night Sunday.

Community information
Solvay Warrington works closely with local schools and colleges to promote the benefits which science brings to our communities. We host school visits to our factory, sponsor a local High School to manufacture trophies for the Chemical Industries Association Awards ceremony and support an annual science conference at Priestley College.
Solvay encourage our employees to participate in community and charitable activities and provide financial support when appropriate.
Advice to the public
Solvay's Warrington site is an upper tier COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 2006) site. In line with the COMAH regulations, we submit a Safety Report to the Health and Safety Executive every five years. The report assesses the hazards and risks associated with our operations and details the controls we employ in order to reduce the risks to As Low as is Reasonably Practicable .
In the unlikely event of a major chemical incident, we will sound our COMAH alarm to alert the local community. If you hear the alarm (a two-tone siren), immediately go inside, close all doors and windows and tune in to a local radio station.

Full Planning (Major)

Grappenhall
Main Location: Land to the East of Stretton Road, North of Pepper Street, Appleton Thorn
Proposal: Full Planning (Major) - Proposed Erection of 71 dwellings, public open space, landscape and associated infrastructure.
Following pressure from campaigners, the scheme was reduced again.
The revised proposal for 71 properties to make way for more green space on the site was approved by the committee on Wednesday.
It will feature 22 affordable homes and eight bungalows.
It brings an end to a long planning battle, with residents campaigning against the proposals since the developer held public consultations in 2014.
Kevin McAloon, representing the Campaign Against Ruining our Environment and Neighbourhood Development Plan groups, said residents felt a 'more acceptable' amount of green space has been provided following positive talks with Bloor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5MG - Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book with the name Gropenhale and with a valuation of five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs, the Parr Arms and the Ram's Head, and Grappenhall Hall Residential School (no longer a residential school) and St Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre. The Bridgewater canal, unique as being the first with no locks required, flows through the village
Grappenhall is home to the 25th Warrington East (St Wilfred's) Scout Troop. There is also a cricket ground, which is the home of Grappenhall Cricket Club.Australian cricketer Steve Smith was signed for the club for five weeks in 2007, when he was 17

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTADG - Following a request by a couple of villagers, the Hatton Parish Council explored various options to place a defibrillator in the village. Following research and a demonstration of various types of defibrillators, the Parish Council decided to team up with the Heartbeat Community Trust to establish a managed service for our defibrillator that has been placed in the phone box.
Many thanks are owed to the owners of the Hatton Arms for arranging for the installation of the cabinet and for providing the necessary power source. The defibrillator is active and will be checked on a weekly basis. It has been registered with the North West Ambulance Service and our agreement with CHT means that support is available to reinstate it following use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA4G - Robinsons Brewery is a family-run, regional brewery, founded in 1849 at the Unicorn Inn in Stockport, England. The company owns more than 300 public houses, mostly in North West England.
William Robinson purchased the Unicorn Inn from Samuel Hole on 29 September 1838. His eldest son George brewed the first Robinsons Ale there in 1849.
In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. Robinsons have acquired a number of other breweries over the years, including John Heginbotham, Stalybridge (1915)
T. Schofield & Son, Ashton under Lyne (1926)
Kays Atlas Brewery, Ardwick (1929) and Bell & Co, Stockport (1949).
The brewery owns many historic pubs, including the New Hall Inn in Bowness on Windermere.

Daresbury has a Lewis Carroll Visitor Centre and the parish church, All Saints, a Lewis Carroll window, including an image of the Cheshire Cat.
In 2006, the annual Creamfields dance festival was held in Daresbury after relocating from the disused Liverpool airport site it had occupied for the six previous years. This saw 40,000 revellers partying from 3pm-6am to a line-up that included live performances from The Prodigy and Zutons, as well as DJ sets from the likes of Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, 2 Many DJ's, Green Velvet and DJ Shadow. As of 2014, the festival has been an annual event at the site.
Daresbury is also the site of a software development office of IT (ITAM, ITSM, IT security) software company, Ivanti.
Daresbury is also an electoral ward. However, the boundary of the ward is different from (and larger than) the parish boundary, and includes the parishes of Moore, Halton and Preston Brook.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY002A - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse.[3] The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873“74 restoration.[4]

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64TRX - St Mary's Church is the Anglican parish church of Lymm, Warrington, Cheshire, England, standing on a bank overlooking Lymm Dam. It is a grade II listed building. It is an active church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.
History
The Domesday Book shows that a church was on the site in the 11th century. Since then it has been rebuilt a number of times. The present church was built in 1850“52 to a design by John Dobson of Newcastle. The nave and aisles from an older church dating from the 15th century were blown up with gunpowder prior to the rebuilding.[4] Alterations and additions were made to the church in 1870“72 by the Chester architect John Douglas, including an organ chamber and the reredos. The tower was replaced in 1888“90 by J. S. Crowther.
Architecture - Exterior
The church is built in buff sandstone. Its plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a north porch, transepts, a chancel, and a vestry. The tower is in three stages with diagonal buttresses and an embattled top. Its west window is in Perpendicular style, and the bell-openings are paired with panel tracery

Seventeen is the 7th prime number. The next prime is nineteen, with which it forms a twin prime. 17 is the sum of the first four primes. 17 is the sixth Mersenne prime exponent, yielding 131071. 17 is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part and real part of the form 3n − 1.
17 is the third Fermat prime, as it is of the form 24 + 1, and it is also a Proth prime. Since 17 is a Fermat prime, regular heptadecagons can be constructed with compass and unmarked ruler. This was proven by Carl Friedrich Gauss. Another consequence of 17 being a Fermat prime is that it is not a Higgs prime for squares or cubes
in fact, it is the smallest prime not to be a Higgs prime for squares, and the smallest not to be a Higgs prime for cubes.
17 is the only positive Genocchi number that is prime, the only negative one being −3. It is also the third Stern prime.
As 17 is the least prime factor of the first twelve terms of the Euclid–Mullin sequence, it is the thirteenth term.
Seventeen is the aliquot sum of two numbers, the odd discrete semiprimes 39 and 55 is the base of the 17-aliquot tree.
In the United Kingdom, 17 is the minimum driving age for a car or van. An amazing Potterfactiod, In the Harry Potter universe, 17 is the coming of age for wizards. It is equivalent to the usual coming of age at 18. 17 is the number of Sickles in one Galleon in the British wizards' currency. Take that one to the pub quiz.
Ladytron (named after a Roxy Music track) captured that teenage seventeen feeling well.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5653993839 - 'The name Lymm, is of Celtic origins, means a 'place of running water' and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The Bridgewater canal (a rare one with no locks), runs through the village diagonally to the original stream.
Lymm village centre is a designated conservation area, notable for its historic buildings, both listed and unlisted. These include the French-style terracotta former Lymm Town Hall (currently unlisted)
Oughtrington Hall &
Lodge, formerly owned by a cadet branch of the Leigh family and now Lymm High School
Lymm Hall, a former Domville family residence
Foxley Hall, home to a cadet branch of the ancient Booth family, before ownership passed to the Carlisle family is no longer standing, but fustian cutting cottages on Booth's Hill Road and Arley Grove do survive. The parish church of St Peter's Church, Oughtrington is an example of Gothic Revival architecture.
St Mary's Church, Lymm is next to Lymm Dam. By 1850 an earlier 14th century building was in disrepair, and the Newcastle architect John Dobson was commissioned to rebuild it. The 1521 tower was retained and raised, but the additional stonework meant that the tower had to be rebuilt in 1887.
Lymm's village cross, known simply as 'The Cross', is a Grade I listed structure.
This is an infrared shot taken with a 720nm adapted SLR. It is more convenient to use than using a Hoya R72 for IR. This spring day was heavy in infrared.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4649331451 - 'A local tale suggests the site of St Oswald's church, Winwick, was decided by a pig that carried and laid the foundation stones where the church was subsequently built!
A pig is commemorated on the west wall of the tower, this could be the evidence or the start of the medieval urban myth. That would certainley be an intelligent pig that would not be eaten in just one sitting!
The Domesday Book in 1086 records that a church existed here at the time of the Norman conquest . The oldest part of the present church dates from the early 14th century. An inscription in the church commemorates King Oswald of Northumbria, a prominent Christian, who is said to have been killed here in 642.
Remains on the site ate thought to go back even further. The current church occupies the site of an ancient Druidical altar and pre-Christian temple. Excavations beneath this Chancel in 1828 revealed 3 gigantic skeletons supporting these theories.
Pictured here is the chancel, formed from a panorama of four seperate images joined. The main body of the church and its wooden nave is currently under threat from Death Watch Beatle. In late april teh local newspaper, the Warrington Guardian reported the following:
'The oak beams of the nave roof at the Winwick church have been gnawed at by death watch beetles, a wood-boring insect, which has led to water seeping into the Legh Chapel and major structural problems in Gerrard Chapel.
The nave has been closed since January after builders carried out maintenance on ceiling tiles and discovered the delapidated beams. Wardens must now apply to English Heritage for a grant by June if they are to get funding during 2010 to resolve the problem.
They hope to hear if they are successful by the end of the year. The work will be carried out over the next two years, depending on how the grant is staged. Warden Christine Melia said: “We’re looking to set up a website to support the funding and we’re hoping that members of the congregation get involved.”
Meanwhile the main Sunday morning services are being held in the church hall. The chancel can still be used for baptisms and weddings but only if the congregation does not exceed 50 people. Christine confirmed that the application for the English Heritage grant would be fully supported by the Rev Canon June Steventon, who was licensed as the church’s new vicar on Tuesday.
St Oswald’s Church is a Grade I listed structure and its earliest parts date back to the early 13th century with the nave – the long central part of the building – dated at roughly 1580'

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4604789614 - 'The common Bluebell, (Hyacinthoides non-scripta to be precise) grows from bulbs and can be expected about four weeks after daffadils in Britain. By the time they appear, frosts should be receeding and days getting noticably warmer.
Other common names for it include auld man's bell, bluebell, calverkeys, culverkeys, English bluebell, jacinth, ring-o'-bells, wilde hyacint, and wood bells (probably as they appear in shaded woodland almost spontainiously.
Bees are a favourite to pollinate these plants. Their black seeds may survive long periods of time emerging after several years' absence if suitable conditions recur. The seedlings can flower in two years from seed and as a result, bluebells can quickly spread to form a carpet in suitable conditions.
In spring, many north-western European woods are covered by dense carpets of this flower, these are commonly referred to as 'bluebell woods'. In my youth that was the common name for a large wood beside the railway commuter line between Hadfield and Manchester. In spring it did produce a carpet of blue.
The presence of large numbers of bluebells is often used as an indicator species to identify ancient woodland, particularly in the East of England and Lincolnshire. It is estimated that 70% of all common bluebells are found in Great Britain.
In the UK the common bluebell is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild common bluebells. This legislation was strengthened in 1998 under Schedule 8 of the Act making any trade in wild common bluebell bulbs or seeds an offence. So respect the little blue fellows!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4552559482 - 'Ahh, a week of warm english weather, blossoms, daffy's, spring has definitely landed. Where church lane and Broad lane meet is a lovely spot for catching the last rays of sun before heading into the village for a quick pint before tea. I would have liked to have been able to say I could smell a BBQ but it would be a wee fib! Also a blue sky untarnished with smoke trails from planes. All air traffic thankfully grounded by the Iceland volcano.
Grappenhall on the edge of south Warrington is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale. It roughly translates to 'The Groping Place' as my cousin (who has a degree in such matters but also an uncharacteristically un-catholic sense of humour) once explained to me. At the time of the Domesday Grappenhall was stated to be worth five shillings. Lets hope that was just the tax revenue.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I have resisted photographing the cat, although may relent if I can find a suitably creative way of doing it.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. The 'large room' in Grappenhall village, was converted into a Police station for the filming of the 'Wisteria Lodge' episode of The Return of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett. The 'Rams Head' pub was converted to the 'The Bull Hotel' in the same episode (see www.flickr.com/photos/nathanchantrell/4010783429/in/photo... ).
Grappenhall has a thriving Cricket Club and is part of the CCC. Cheshire County Cricket Club is one of the county clubs which make up the Minor Counties in the English domestic cricket structure, representing the historic county of Cheshire and playing in the Minor Counties Championship and the MCCA Knockout Trophy. The club is based at Cheadle and plays matches around the county at Boughton Hall in Chester, Nantwich, New Brighton, Grappenhall and Alderley Edge.
Oh, and by-the-way, I have reached 300 in my 365 without missing a day so far - yay! (big thanks to Jill, who helped me decide to start, way back in June - Hanx!)

Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghosts www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4103283717/ , as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.
The church of England All Saints Church is just further north of the pub www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3691489296/
A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

It ceased to serve Greenhalls Grunhalle lager in April 2002 to have ramps and disabled toilets to be fitted. See more here
However it did not survive the renovations and is now the site of Bartholomew Court, a McCarthy and Stone housing scheme 44 sheltered apartments for people aged 60-plus.
it was actually the second pub to bear the name 'Dog and Dart' in Grappenhall - and the first was around 200 years old when it was demolished.
Parish councillor Mike Biggin said the people of Grappenhall and Thelwall were overwhelmingly opposed to demolition of the pub. It had a football and a children's rugby team.

An original slude was taken and this was printed onto a sheet of photographic film (10x8 inches) in a darkroom. Thi sis then the negative.
Some 180gsm art paper was then painted with a mixture of Green ferric ammonium citrate and half again of Potassium ferricyanide disolved in water. Hence the streaks at the edges.
These were then allowed to dry in subdued light then stored until a bright day came along in a black plastic printing film bag to prevent fogging.
When the bright sun came the paper, negative and heavy glass sheet were sandwiched and left for 20 minutes. Finally a wash of hydrogen peroxide was applied. The print was then fixed and stable, ready to be dried.

WDCC – Discover the hidden Lymm – Monday 25th June 2007
NB: In the event of very wet weather, the meeting will be held in the GYCA bar, with an opportunity to see images shot on the trail below. The route is interesting at different times of day, so if you cannot make it on the night, don’t worry! Bring your images taken on the members work night 9th July with any of your other favourite pictures.
Try to find an unusual angle on what you see &
try to be surprised by the everyday!
The route can be joined at the usual meeting point of the GYCA / Bellhouse club in Grappenhall or if more convenient at 7.30pm in Lymm.
7pm Depart GYCA car park (in shared or own cars).
From the GYCA turn left into bellhouse Lane, then left to the traffic lights at the junction of A50/A56. Turn right towards Lymm.
1.After approx ¼ mile take a left into Stanton Road. At the bottom turn right into Thelwall New Road, stopping at All Saints church yard on the right. If you have a digital camera and a deep red or hoya R72 filter, a good place for some infra-red photography.
2.From the church continue along road to Lymm. Note the Old post office, Pickering Arms and lettering on side about ‘The city called Thelwall’. Continue until the junction with the A56 and take a left into Stockport Road, then immediate left towards Statham.
3.Note the M6 road bridges that pass overhead. Continue passing the hotel on the left with climbing plants on the front. Another good spot for an infra-red shot. Continue along road and turn right after about ½ mile into Star lane. Continue to the top and turn left towards Lymm on A56/Stockport Road.
7.30pm Arrive at Lymm Dam. Park either in the Church Inn, next to Church or along the road beside Lymm Dam.
4.From the road, take the path to the right of the Dam to get a view of the dam framed with trees from the bank. Walk along the railings below the road and find the gameboy and the penguins with guns. Notice the bulrushes and grasses at the front of the dam. Don’t forget to put on a longer lens for the ducks.
5.Walk up the road/hill to St Mary’s church. Note the cross on the entrance. A polarising filter would come in handy for the tower or its stone carvings. Note the stone angels and squirrels up on the sides of the building.
6.In the graveyard find at least one cross and one carved flower in the gravestones. Some interesting door handles and locks can be seen in the graveyard &
around the buildings.
7.Cross the road and walk down towards Grappenhall on the A56/Stockport Road until you find the steps down to the Dingle. If you reach Brookfield Rd you have gone too far! Note the graffiti on the buildings behind the padlocked gates at the sides of the main pathway. Several trees have been felled beside the path. Spot the new fern growth and the purple foxgloves.
8.At the bottom of the dingle is the lower mill pool. Note the cottages reflecting in the water (as they should be illuminated by the evening light) and wild flowers adjacent to water.
9.Turn left into Eagle Brow and then right past the Lymm Chippy. Spot one of the flags on view. Continue under the canal bridge and join the canal bank on the left. If you haven’t already done so, you will probably spot some ducks. Keep left along the canal towards the road bridge. Notice Bridgewater cottage on the left &
its many plants &
flowers. Miss the erotic topiary at your peril!
10.Turn left before the canal bridge along by the old canal cottages. Note the year the cottages were built above the lintel.
11.From the cottages, turn right over canal bridge towards the historic Lymm Cross &
the main street of shops (called The Cross). There are a number of notable details on the cross including the sundial with its slogan ‘Save Time’. The village cross in Lymm known as 'The Cross' is the only Grade I listed structure in the Borough of Warrington and is thought to date back to Saxon times.
12.Turn back towards the canal, (without re-crossing the canal bridge) on the opposite side to Bridgewater cottage for a good view of the cottage and canal boats. Try misting up your lens, or adding a filter for a more surreal shot of the canal &
boats. Don’t forget the reflections, often more interesting than some of the boats!
13.Walk back up through the dingle to back to car for a drink back at the GYCA after 9.30pm. Forty shots taken following this walk will be available in the bar to view.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWF1 - Grappenhall Cricket Club played its first game in 1881 on a ground in Bellhouse Lane. The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed.
From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's “ the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.
In 1982, the 1st XI went one better, this time winning the league and cup double with the HC Cup Final being one of a number of appearances the club mate at Old Trafford in the 80's.
The double was repeated in 1987 with another appearance at Old Trafford, this time with the team including another future Lancashire star and future Grappers captain in Steve Titchard. In the same season, the 2nd XI also tasted success by winning the Worthington Cup.
There were a number of other cup successes for the club during this period for the different senior and junior teams, with many a memorable game taking place and the tales still being regaled today.
In 1992, the club were in their last season in Manchester Association before a move to the CCCL

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C59GFX - HM Prison Thorn Cross is a Category D Adult Male Institution for males aged 21+. The prison is located in the village of Appleton Thorn (near Warrington) in Cheshire, England. Thorn Cross is operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service.
Thorn Cross Prison opened in 1985, on the site of the former RNAS Stretton (HMS Blackcap) airfield. Thorn Cross was initially used as an open prison for adult males. In 1996, the prison was re-rolled as a Young Offenders Institution. At the time, Thorn Cross was the first such institution in the United Kingdom to enforce military-style disciplinary regime for some of its inmates, which led to a part of the prison (unit 5) being labelled a boot camp.
In January 1999, an inspection report from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons labelled Thorn Cross Prison as an inspirational example of good practice. In particular the report praised the prison's High Intensity Training (HIT) project, and recommended it be rolled out to other prisons.
In October 2005, a further inspection report highly praised Thorn Cross Prison, again highlighting the prisons HIT program. The report also noted that Thorn Cross managed to reduce re-offending amongst its ex-inmates to just over 20 per cent, one of the best rates in the country. The report added that the prison had to do more to improve relations with the local community however.
Present day
HM Prison Thorn Cross is a Category D Adult Male Institution for males aged 21+. Accommodation consists of single rooms, each prisoner having his own room key.
Education and training courses offered at the prison include Construction Crafts, Motor Vehicles, Horticulture, Hospitality and Catering and Rail Construction (NVQ Level 2). Thorn Cross has a number of partnerships with national and local employers, offering opportunities for work placements prior to and on release.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9D89J - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Following the construction of the Sankey Brook Navigation, Bridgewater has been argued to be the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution in England, and it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as Canal Mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.
In September 1761, with his assistant Hugh Oldham, Brindley surveyed an extension from Longford Bridge to Hempstones, near Halton, Cheshire. He assisted in obtaining Parliamentary approval for the Bridgewater Canal Extension Act of 1762 which allowed the construction of an extension to the canal, from Manchester, to the River Mersey at Runcorn. Despite objections from the Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company, Royal assent was given on 24 March 1762. A junction, Waters Meeting, was created in Trafford Park, at which the new extension branched south through Stretford, Sale, Altrincham, Lymm and finally to Runcorn.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GT23 - Oak Tree in autumn, Daresbury, Warrington, Cheshire, North west England, UK works as a grounded stock photograph because the subject is specific, legible and connected to wider social, economic or cultural themes. An oak tree in autumn is a classic English rural subject, carrying associations of age, habitat, seasonal change and the deep cultural symbolism of native trees. In Daresbury and the wider Cheshire landscape it can illustrate countryside access, biodiversity, carbon storage, village identity, weather, woodland management and the visual richness of autumn colour. Autumn colour and seasonal change add environmental and weather relevance. The location detail, Warrington, Daresbury, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. The scene has practical value for features needing authentic British or international street-level evidence, especially where policy, culture, business, tourism or social change is easier to explain through one clear example.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MM9A1B - Dramatic Sunset behind trees in winter, Cheshire, England, UK gives a direct editorial record of a recognisable subject, with location, signage, architecture or everyday behaviour carrying much of the meaning. A dramatic winter sunset behind trees gives a strong seasonal landscape mood, with bare branches and low light suggesting the short days and cold air of the Cheshire countryside. The subject works for weather, climate, rural calm, mental wellbeing, winter travel, evening light and the simple visual appeal of natural silhouettes against a changing sky. Low light, dusk or night conditions add atmosphere and make the subject useful for evening economy, safety and seasonal weather contexts. The location wording gives the subject enough geographic context for local and regional editorial use while avoiding a generic studio feel. For buyers, the strength lies in the combination of a named subject, a lived-in setting and enough visual specificity to carry stories about how places are used, remembered, funded, visited or contested.
