Fiddler's Ferry was a major coal-fired power station on the south bank of the River Mersey near Cuerdley, between Warrington and Widnes, and for decades its towers were visible for miles across Cheshire, Merseyside and the motorway network. The station ceased commercial generation in 2020 and has since been subject to phased demolition and redevelopment planning, with four towers already removed and these four remaining at the time this photograph was taken. That gives the image strong editorial value for stories about deindustrialisation, the decline of coal power, brownfield regeneration, energy transition, demolition, planning, industrial heritage and changing North West landscapes. PLANS have been submitted to carry out necessary repair work to a piece of Warrington's railway heritage.
Network Rail is seeking listed building consent to refurbish Monks Siding Signal Box in Sankey Bridges and give it the loving attention that it rightly deserves.
The Grade II-listed building sits on Quay Fold next to the railway line which connects Warrington Bank Quay and Liverpool South Parkway train stations.
It was built in 1875 and still retains its original 20-lever LNWR tumbler frame.
The signal box is a two-storey timber framed structure. The ground floor houses signalling equipment which is operated by a signaller from the first floor.
The application submitted to Warrington Borough Council proposes all external work, including the repair of timber and guttering.
The timber will then be prepared for painting, before being painted in a colour which matches the existing colour scheme.
Surrounding vegetation and debris to perimeter of signal box will be removed as required, with wrought iron repairs being carried out as required.
Documents submitted as part of the application state: The proposed development is considered necessary to improve and extend the safe operation of the station.
This in turn preserves the building's character and use.
The proposal will not be to the detriment of the building's historic character.

History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Four of the old bells, which are more than 300 years old, have been preserved for their historic value and hang above the new ones in the tower of the historic church.
The sounds of the new bells could be heard again earlier this month, ringing out across the area.
A spokesman from the bell ringers said: We are absolutely delighted with these bells. We hope that those who were within earshot enjoyed the ringing as much as we did. Listen out for us on Sunday morning.
After an absence of six months, the new bells for St Wilfrid's Church arrived on Friday, July 5.
The new ring of 10 bells has been cast at the foundry of John Taylor & Co of Loughborough, with each donated by individuals or groups in the village.
Ringers and parishioners had the chance to visit the foundry to watch the castings take place.
Nick Thomson, ringing master at Grappenhall Bell Ringers, said: The tenor bell (the heaviest bell in the ring) weighs just over half a ton, and has been donated by the bell ringers themselves.
The ninth bell has been donated by the PCC and is in remembrance of those who fell in the First World War as a special tribute to the fallen, the foundry has cast a ring of poppies in the crown of the bell.
The bells were taken into the church and put on display so that they could be viewed before they make the journey up the tower.
The bell ringers have been using churches in Stockton Heath and Stretton to continue with their weekly practises during the absence.

It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 187374 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 187374 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000

An Other Nationalities representative winger, Bevan scored a world record 796 tries, mainly for the Warrington RLFC. In 2008, the centenary year of rugby league in Australia, he was named on the wing of Australia's Team of the Century (1908-2007). Virgin Trains introduced three sliding classes of travel. Instead of First and Standard, you'd have Gold Zone, Blue Zone and Purple Zone. Gold Zone was full First Class and available to full-fare First Open ticket holders only. This would always take up at least 2 of the First Class vehicles, but in the peaks would take up all of them.
'Purple Zone was Standard Class, available to all Standard ticket holders, and would take up at least 3 of the Standard Class vehicles. The other vehicles would be the Blue Zone, which was where it got controversial. The Blue Zone was available only to holders of full-fare undiscounted Standard Open singles and returns, but also contained Weekend First accommodation on weekends and off-peak.
