Frederick Monks, a former Rylands Brothers apprentice, founded Monks of Whitecross in 1864, and the enterprise later developed into the Whitecross Wire and Iron Company and then the Whitecross Company. The works expanded around Milner Street and Froghall Lane, producing iron and steel wire, wire rope, wire netting, barbed wire and nails for domestic and export markets. By the end of the nineteenth century Whitecross occupied a large industrial site and employed many local people, reflecting Warrington's importance as a British wire-making centre. Wire from Warrington served engineering, mining, shipping, fencing and many other trades, while wartime production included materials required for military and civil purposes. In 1973 Whitecross combined with its long-standing Warrington rival Rylands Brothers to form Rylands-Whitecross as the British steel industry consolidated production and older local works contracted. History
A chapel of ease known as Trinity Chapel was built on the site in 1708 to relieve pressure on the parish church of St Elphin's. It was built as an oratory by Peter Legh of Lyme Park. By the 1750s the chapel was too small for its congregation and in 1758 subscriptions were raised to build a new church, which was consecrated in 1760. The architecture is in the style of James Gibbs, but he was ill at the time the church was built and it is thought it was designed by one of Gibbs' associates. In 1862 a west clock tower was added which was designed by W. P. Coxon, the Borough Surveyor
the tower belongs to the town rather than to the church. In 1974 the south aisle was re-designed to form the Garven Room, a servery, a vestry and toilets. By the 1970s the roof had been damaged by wet and dry rot, woodworm and death watch beetle and was replaced in 1978“79. By 1990 the pipe organ was beyond repair and it has been replaced by a Makin electronic organ. In 1988 the west end was remodelled, forming a lobby. In 1997 the east end was reordered, adding a room and extending the sanctuary area. In 1999 the clock was refurbished by Warrington Borough Council as a Millennium project.

The church is built in Georgian style. Its front is constructed in sandstone, and the rear in brick with stone dressings. The stonework at the front is rusticated. The front aspect is in four stages
at the base is a rusticated plinth, above which is a tier of windows with a Doric doorcase at the west of the front. Then comes an upper tier of windows with Ionic pilasters and at the top a cornice and a plain parapet. In the east wall is a Palladian window.

PLANS have been submitted to carry out necessary repair work to a piece of Warrington's railway heritage.
Network Rail is seeking listed building consent to refurbish Monks Siding Signal Box in Sankey Bridges and give it the loving attention that it rightly deserves.
The Grade II-listed building sits on Quay Fold next to the railway line which connects Warrington Bank Quay and Liverpool South Parkway train stations.
It was built in 1875 and still retains its original 20-lever LNWR tumbler frame.
The signal box is a two-storey timber framed structure. The ground floor houses signalling equipment which is operated by a signaller from the first floor.
The application submitted to Warrington Borough Council proposes all external work, including the repair of timber and guttering.
The timber will then be prepared for painting, before being painted in a colour which matches the existing colour scheme.
Surrounding vegetation and debris to perimeter of signal box will be removed as required, with wrought iron repairs being carried out as required.
Documents submitted as part of the application state: The proposed development is considered necessary to improve and extend the safe operation of the station.
This in turn preserves the building's character and use.
The proposal will not be to the detriment of the building's historic character.

This Tudor building on Church Street, Warrington is one of the town's oldest and most famous landmarks.

The grade two-listed building now houses an Indian restaurant “ aptly named the Cottage “ which opened following a lengthy, National Trust approved renovation of the premises in the early noughties.
Whilst frequently referred to as Cromwell's Cottage, Oliver Cromwell is only thought to have stayed the night at the now demolished General Wolf close by on August 20, 1648.
However, the cottage is where he sent dispatches proclaiming victories over Scottish Royalists during battles at Preston, Winwick and Warrington itself.
Today, a plaque commemorates that fact “ with Cromwell's victory at the Battle of Winwick Pass leading to the surrender of Scots forces on August 25.
The defeat of Royalist armies in the north of England ultimately hastened the end of the second English Civil War, and led to the execution of Charles I in January 1649.
It is believed that the cottage dates back to roughly the 16th century, according to a 2007 Warrington Borough Council report “ which states that the building was constructed in a ˜late medieval style' after the road's original middle-age structures were destroyed.
Similar characteristics can be attributed to the other Tudor cottages on Church Street, with the nearby Bull's Head and Marquis of Granby pubs remaining as the street's oldest surviving buildings

It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold
Greenall's ales are distributed by Carlsberg and brewed for them by Molson Coors in Burtonwood, near Warrington. Greenall's ales can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although they are gradually disappearing (thank God!). Often, only Greenall's Mild can be found. Victim Stuart Lowe, 18, was killed in Warrington, in October, when Sibongiseni Majola struck him about the head with a screwdriver and kicked him while on the ground.
Stuart had suffered a massive brain injury and although he clung to life for seven days, he died a week later without regaining conciousness.
Yesterday, Majola, from Warrington, was sentenced to life behind bars, with a recommendation he serve at least 12 years before he can be considered for parole.
He had admitted murder last month at Chester crown court.
The court heard that joinery apprentice Stuart had gone to a party at The Bank Quay Social Club on October 17, last year.
It finished at 11pm and led to up to 100 young people, mostly students, milling around on the streets outside.
The mood began to change when football songs were chanted and witnesses report seeing fighting breaking out.
Majola and his friend were hit, and later claimed they had been subjected to racist comments.
The defendant left the scene in a friend's car and was dropped off at his home nearby.
But instead of staying there, he armed himself with a screwdriver, and headed back to Warrington town centre.
His friend, who had also armed himself with a shovel, joined him.
As they walked along Sankey Street they came across Stuart Lowe with his friends, making their way home.
Although Stuart was not involved in the initial fight, an altercation developed between the two groups, and Majola struck his head with the screwdriver.
Witnesses say Majola kicked Stuart as he lay on the floor before running off.
A 17-year-old, from Warrington, pleaded guilty to the possession of the shovel and affray and was jailed for 18 months.

The family was noted for their contribution to the development of Warrington and also for making the River Mersey more navigable, Thomas Patten did this in order to ship copper ore to his works at Bank Quay and for establishing vital transport connections to promote other trade in the area. The garden was created circa 1864 as the kitchen garden to the Walton Lea mansion house. It was designed by Edward Walters and built by George Crosfield, the eldest son of soap manufacturing pioneer Joseph Crosfield. In the early 1900s the house was bought by the Armitage family. In 1923 it was bought by the Greenall family, owners of nearby Walton Hall. The Greenall and Crosfield families were political rivals and in 1925 the Greenalls demolished the mansion leaving only the garden, cottages and associated buildings. The estate also included a fernery and rose garden that are no longer in existence. The walled garden later passed to Warrington Borough Council. It is in now managed by the Walton Lea project to benefit the community and people with disabilities.
The garden has an area of one acre with intact walls. The land slopes from the south-facing wall toward the north-facing wall.
The garden is open to the public daily. Fruit and vegetables from the garden are on sale. The garden provides work opportunities for people with disabilities

The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873“74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. It happens every year I know, but it always impresses me how nature awakens after those 'Jacks in the green' have done their work over the winter. And, this track says it all to me.
Its from one of my favourite bands BRMC and an album that has most tracks as my 4 &
5 star ratings on my ipod.
The band are named after Marlon Brando's motorcycle gang in the 1953 film The Wild One and are from San Francisco, California, now based in Los Angeles, USA.
Its easy to hear their influences from Led Zeppelin, the BJM, The Stones and The Jesus and Mary Chain in their music.
Early albums were in a very rock vein, with 'Howl' showing a move to a more blues/folk style.
The first album is the best starting point for newcomers to the band. The live DVD recorded in Glasgow, Berlin, and Dublin during the Baby 81 world tour is also worth grabbing.

A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580.
The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847\u201349 for the 13th Earl of Derby. Much damage had been done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank.
It is particularly good in spring when all the cherry trees in the graveyard blossom. A very unique building any time of year.
