Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE743 - A historic canalside crane and associated barriers are shown beside the Bridgewater Canal at Stanney Lunt Bridge in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, photographed during winter with light snow covering the canal bank and surrounding ground. The metal crane mechanism, with its visible gears and hand-operated components, stands as a reminder of the working life of Britain's inland waterways, when canals played a central role in the movement of goods and materials. Frost, snow and leafless trees emphasise the seasonal conditions and the quiet, paused atmosphere of the scene.
The Bridgewater Canal is one of the most historically significant waterways in England, closely associated with the Industrial Revolution and the development of inland transport. Structures such as this crane illustrate the practical engineering that supported canal operations, from loading and unloading cargo to routine maintenance. In winter, when activity is reduced and the landscape is subdued, these remnants of industrial infrastructure take on a reflective quality, highlighting the passage of time and the transition from commercial use to heritage and leisure.
The image reflects wider themes of British industrial heritage, conservation and the relationship between landscape and engineering. It is suitable for editorial use in heritage and education publications, travel features, documentary storytelling and material exploring the history of canals, transport and industry in England. The combination of winter snow, historic machinery and a tranquil canalside setting also makes the photograph adaptable for broader uses focusing on seasonal change, preservation and the enduring presence of industrial history within the modern countryside.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X5K8GW - A close-up image of a weathered metal sign reading Thelwall Underbridge mounted on a stone bridge structure along the Bridgewater Canal in Thelwall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The sign shows signs of age, with worn paint and surface marks, reflecting the long operational history of the canal.
The Bridgewater Canal, opened in the eighteenth century, is regarded as one of the most significant waterways of the Industrial Revolution, enabling the efficient transport of goods between Manchester, Liverpool, and surrounding areas. Underbridges such as this allowed roads and tracks to pass beneath the canal, forming an integral part of early canal engineering.
Thelwall is a historic village located on the south bank of the River Mersey, later incorporated into Warrington, and the canal remains a prominent local feature used today for leisure walking, cycling, and boating. The simple functional signage captured here reflects the practical design language of Britain's canal network.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating British canal heritage, industrial history, inland waterways, civil engineering landmarks, rural and village environments, and the enduring legacy of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century transport infrastructure in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRRB - A close view of official signage for Latchford Locks on the Manchester Ship Canal at Latchford in Warrington, Cheshire. The sign identifies the site as part of the Manchester Ship Canal network, operated by Peel Ports on behalf of The Manchester Ship Canal Company Limited, and includes safety and access symbols associated with working canal infrastructure.
Latchford Locks form part of the historic Manchester Ship Canal, a major piece of late-19th-century civil engineering that transformed inland shipping access between Manchester and the Mersey estuary. The locks continue to serve commercial navigation while also existing within a modern urban environment, requiring clear public safety signage and controlled access.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents contemporary management of historic industrial waterways in England. It illustrates themes of transport heritage, infrastructure maintenance, public safety, and the ongoing operational role of the Manchester Ship Canal in the UK's inland waterway system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEK7Y - The eight Warrington ship canal bridges can be seen keeping a silent watch over the town, with the complete straightness of the waterway enabling the onlooker to see every bridge from the Thelwall Viaduct to Moore Lane Swing Bridge.
And it is these bridges that make this canal both unique and ground breaking.
The Cantilever itself weighs about 783 tonnes and the 206ft span carries the roadway 75 feet above the water level.
It was designed to provide a constant route to Latchford Train Station free from the interference and traffic stoppages associated with the turning of the nearby swing bridges.
The 36-mile canal opened on May 21, 1894, in a bid to divert trade from Liverpool docks into the centre of Manchester.
Dubbed The Big Ditch', more than 54million cubic yards of material were excavated for the canal, including 12million cubic yards of sandstone rock.
Terraced houses were set up nearby for workers, the likes of which can be seen on the estates off Knutsford Road in Latchford.
Meanwhile, bigwigs of the Manchester Ship Canal Company set up home in grand villas, most of which still exist in lower Grappenhall and Stockton Heath.
Work was twice delayed by water flooding into sections of the excavation, in November 1890 and December 1891.
However, the canal was finally completely filled with water in November 1893.
It opened to its first traffic on January 1, 1894. Today it is still a seaway for 1,500 ships annually carrying 6.5million tonnes of cargo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PBE6CA - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge. Following the re-routing of roads to the Silver Jubilee Bridge, the Runcorn Locks Restoration Society campaigns to reinstate the flight of locks.[1]
The Bridgewater canal is described as the first great achievement of the canal age, although the Sankey Canal opened earlier. Bridgewater captured the public imagination because of its engineering feats
it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, and a tunnel at Worsley. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as Canal Mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M7R - The Manchester Ship Canal Company was formed in 1882 with the aim of linking Manchester to the sea via a navigable canal and river route. The idea had been floating around since 1660, but it was the Manchester manufacturer Daniel Adamson who brought together the men who could actually make it happen in June of 1882. The bill that they proposed to Parliament was initially rejected, but was finally passed in May 1885, and was known as the Manchester Ship Canal Act 1885.
The ship canal took six years to complete at a cost of just over ?15 million, equivalent to about ?1.65 billion in 2011, and measures thirty-six miles in length, from the Mersey Estuary at Eastham on the Wirral to Manchester.
I've not been able to determine what year they were granted their coat of arms, but what's interesting about it is that bees are featured in two location, because it combines elements of the arms of Manchester, Salford and Warrington, as can be seen below.
Arms ? 1st Gules, three bendlets enhanced, or, on a chief argent, thereon on waves of the sea, a steamship, proper (for Manchester).
2nd. Azure, semee of bees, volant, a shuttle between three garbs, or, on a chief of the last, a bale corded, proper, between two millrinds, sable (for Salford).
3rd. Argent, six lionettes, three, two, and one, gules (for Warrinton).
Crest ? 1st, A terrestial globe, semee of bees, volant, all proper.
2nd. A demi-lion, argent, therefrom flowing to the sinister, a flag/
3rd. A sword and mace in saltire, the sword enfiled with a wreath of laurel, both surmounted by a scroll bearing the inscription Anno Regina Victoria.
Supporters ? On the dexter side an herladic antelope, argent, attired, collared, and chain reflexted over the back, or
on the sinister side, a lion guardant, or, murally crowned, gules, each charged on the shoulder with a rose of the last.
Motto ? Navigation and Commerce.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JNA - This image shows the narrowboat Terbulance travelling along the Bridgewater Canal near the village of Lymm in Cheshire. The green-painted canal boat is captured moving slowly beneath a traditional brick bridge, with trees and vegetation lining the waterway and sunlight filtering through the leaves, creating a calm summer atmosphere.
The Bridgewater Canal is one of Britain's most historically significant waterways, often described as the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution. Today it is primarily used for leisure boating, walking, and cycling, offering a quieter alternative to modern transport and a strong connection to England's industrial and rural heritage.
Narrowboats such as Terbulance are designed for the narrow locks and channels of the UK canal system and are commonly used for holidays, long-term cruising, or as floating homes. The presence of the towpath, grassy banks, and low brick bridge reflects the enduring character of Britain's inland waterways, where historic infrastructure continues to support contemporary leisure use.
Photographed in daylight during summer, the image emphasises themes of slow travel, countryside recreation, and heritage transport. It is well suited to editorial use covering British canals, inland waterways, leisure boating, rural England, tourism, and the preservation and modern use of historic canal networks.

Latchford viaduct was opened on 8 July 1893 to carry the London and North Western Railway's Stockport to Warrington line over the Manchester Ship Canal. The wrought iron viaduct, with a span of 250 feet (76 m), weighed more than 1,200 tonnes. The last passengers service ran in 1962, but the line continued to carry freight. It finally closed to all traffic in July 1985, when it was deemed too expensive to make extensive repairs to keep Latchford viaduct operational.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00EY - Fiddlers Ferry Lock
Between 1762 and 1833, this was the end of the Sankey Canal, where boats joined or left the tidal River Mersey. A second lock, now filled in, was built a short distance to the west, to enable more boats to lock through with each tide. The locks became disused after the canal was extended to Widnes in 1833. This lock was restored in the 1980s by Warrington Council and now gives access to a marina.
Currently boats can either access the marina or a repair boat yard. Many use the marina as a shelter from the tidal River Mersey.
Because the Mersey is tidal the use of the lock is restricted to high tides as at low tide there are only exposed mud banks on the Mersey.
There is a swing bridge across the entrance to the lock which carries the towpath users including vehicles accessing the boat yard.
When the canal was extended to Widnes in 1833 another lock onto the Mersey was created at that point and this lock closed. Except for a short stretch the canal is still in water between here and Widnes, although there is one fixed pedestrian bridge across the canal. With no major roads crossed, however, this is the easiest and most convenient section for restoration.
There is currently a major new road bridge being constructed across the Mersey near Widnes (Mersey Gateway Bridge).
The Linking the Locks project's aim is to restore this section to navigation over the next three years (starting in 2014), via a joint project between Halton and Warrington Councils and the Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCARS).
The contractor for the new Mersey Gateway Bridge has agreed to replace the fixed bridge to Spike Island with a swing bridge, and the task will be given to apprentices as a suitable project.

The quays at thorn marine were also used by Caldwells to ship there tools spades, picks, etc for the gold rush in america and the First World War. The good were shipped to Liverpool where they were loaded onto sea going ships
During the First and second world wars the canal was also used to move munitions and men to Liverpool to be shipped across for the war effort.
Since we took over
We passed Thorn Marine in the spring of 1991 on our 25' Dawncraft Hammie on a two week trip around the Cheshire ring, we noticed it was looking a bit unloved and there was a for sale sign out side.
A few phone calls on our return home we discovered it was still for sale, but not with the agents anymore. After nearly 12 months of negotiations with the vendor and The Manchester ship Canal Company, we finally moved in on the 11th April 1992.
Over the next few years Margaret turned the business around from a fancy good shop back to a chandlery with help from Brian and Nigel when they were not working in their own careers. Brian decided in 1997 to stop paining and decorating and joined Margret working full time in the shop.
In 1997 we too delivery of Rambling Thorn our purpose built day boat

A few phone calls on our return home we discovered it was still for sale, but not with the agents anymore. After nearly 12 months of negotiations with the vendor and The Manchester ship Canal Company, we finally moved in on the 11th April 1992.
Over the next few years Margaret turned the business around from a fancy good shop back to a chandlery with help from Brian and Nigel when they were not working in their own careers. Brian decided in 1997 to stop paining and decorating and joined Margret working full time in the shop.
In 1997 we too delivery of Rambling Thorn our purpose built day boat

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP5RXB - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing[8] and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph
