Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRJ - This photograph shows exterior signage on the former Golden Lion Inn, a traditional public house located on Knutsford Road in Warrington, Cheshire. The red brick building, with arched detailing and raised gold lettering, reflects the late Victorian style commonly used for urban and roadside pubs serving growing industrial towns in north west England.
For many years, the Golden Lion Inn formed part of Warrington's local pub network, serving nearby residential streets and acting as a social meeting place for the surrounding community. Like many traditional pubs across the UK, it eventually closed amid changing drinking habits, rising operating costs, and pressure on older licensed premises that were no longer commercially viable.
Following closure, the building was redeveloped into residential flats, reflecting a wider national trend in which former pubs are converted to housing rather than reopened as licensed venues. While the internal use has changed, much of the external character has been retained, with original brickwork and pub signage still visible, allowing the building's former role to remain legible within the streetscape.
Taken in daylight, the image documents both architectural detail and social change. It serves as a visual record of pub closures in Britain and the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, illustrating how everyday community landmarks are increasingly absorbed into housing-led redevelopment while retaining traces of their original identity. The Golden Lion on Knutsford Road, Latchford, Warrington (WA4 1AB) has roots that run back well before its late twentieth-century local reputation. Local history writing referenced by MyWarrington describes a Golden Lion Tavern as a recognised roadside marker on the old Knutsford Road route, used as one end of a long-standing agreement connected with tolls and responsibility for maintaining the highway between the Golden Lion and Black Bear Bridge, which strongly suggests it was already established

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X5K8B6 - An open trench showing replacement gas pipes during utility renewal works in Thelwall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The image shows newly installed yellow gas pipes laid within an excavated trench, surrounded by orange safety barriers used to protect pedestrians and vehicles during roadworks.
The works form part of a gas main renewal programme historically associated with Transco, the former gas transportation business of National Grid, now operating under Cadent Gas following industry restructuring. Such programmes are designed to replace ageing iron gas mains with modern polyethylene piping to improve safety, reliability, and long-term resilience of the gas distribution network.
Thelwall is a residential village area south of Warrington, where infrastructure upgrades are typically carried out on local roads serving housing estates and village centres. Utility works of this type are a common feature of UK streets, often requiring temporary traffic management and causing short-term disruption in exchange for long-term improvements to essential services.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating gas infrastructure renewal, utility maintenance, civil engineering works, public safety measures, local roadworks, and the ongoing investment required to maintain underground energy networks in towns and villages across England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX189J - This image shows signage advertising a Final Clearance sale at Hancock & Wood, a retail business located on Bridge Street in Warrington, Cheshire, England. The photograph captures the visual language commonly associated with shop closures, including prominent sale wording designed to attract final customers as a business winds down trading. The scene reflects the pressures facing independent retailers on UK high streets.
Bridge Street forms part of Warrington's main town centre shopping area and has historically been home to a mix of independent shops and national chains. In recent years, like many British towns, Warrington has experienced changes in retail patterns driven by rising costs, online shopping, and shifting consumer behaviour, leading to an increase in clearance sales, store closures, and vacant units.
The image conveys themes of economic change, retail decline, and the challenges facing traditional high street businesses in England. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to UK retail, town centre economics, small business closures, shopping habits, economic downturn, and the transformation of British high streets.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R72E6N - Leading contractor developer for the social housing sector, Lane End Developments Construction, has gone into administration.
The Warrington-based business operates across the North west of England and Wales.
Managing directors of insolvency firm Quantuma Jeremy Woodside and Frank Ofonagoro, both of the firm's Manchester office, have been appointed joint administrators.
The company was set up in 2016 and has built more than 1,100. It currently has live projects on 17 different sites - which aimed to create 1,700 new homes - employing 118 staff.
Current projects include delivering a 177 affordable homes scheme in Llandudno in partnership with ClwydAlyn and a 60 home scheme with Torus in Wigan.
In its last financial year, to the end of May, 2022, the company generated revenues of around £81m with a pre-tax profit of nearly £250,000.
Mr Woodside said:This is obviously a very difficult and uncertain time for the company, its employees and suppliers, and its wider stakeholders.
We're currently working alongside potential funders and senior management to assess the options available to them to restructure Lane End Developments Construction and allow it to continue to operate and deliver housing projects.
The contractor had been developing schemes with a string of housing associations, including L&Q, Jigsaw Homes and Onward, when it announced its collapse in April.
At the time, the three landlords said they were disappointed and concerned about the firm's collapse, but none were named in the list of creditors that are owed money.
The administrator's proposal shows that for the year end of 31 May 2022, Lane End had a turnover of more than £81m, but its profit for the year was less than £178,000. Tangible assets were just over £1m.

The sign identifies the site as part of the Manchester Ship Canal network, operated by Peel Ports on behalf of The Manchester Ship Canal Company Limited, and includes safety and access symbols associated with working canal infrastructure.
Latchford Locks form part of the historic Manchester Ship Canal, a major piece of late-19th-century civil engineering that transformed inland shipping access between Manchester and the Mersey estuary. The locks continue to serve commercial navigation while also existing within a modern urban environment, requiring clear public safety signage and controlled access.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents contemporary management of historic industrial waterways in England. It illustrates themes of transport heritage, infrastructure maintenance, public safety, and the ongoing operational role of the Manchester Ship Canal in the UK's inland waterway system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J5X - This image shows a yellow railway safety sign mounted on a station platform in the United Kingdom, clearly instructing passengers to Keep back from the platform edge. The accompanying message warns that passing trains can cause air turbulence, highlighting a common but often underestimated risk in busy railway environments.
Such signage forms part of the UK rail network's wider approach to passenger safety, particularly on platforms used by high-speed or non-stopping trains. The sign's bold black text on a yellow background follows established safety-design conventions intended to ensure high visibility and immediate comprehension.
Overhead line equipment and electrical infrastructure are visible in the background, reinforcing the operational context of a modern electrified railway. Together, these elements underline the importance of clear safety communication in public transport settings where large numbers of people move through confined spaces.
Photographed under natural light, the image is well suited to editorial use covering rail safety, public transport infrastructure, passenger behaviour, risk awareness, and the everyday experience of travelling by train in the UK.

The clean architectural design and consistent corporate branding reflect contemporary automotive retail standards, where customer experience, visibility, and forecourt presentation play a key role in vehicle sales. The image documents the dealership as a commercial business environment rather than a motor show or promotional event.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PCB3K3 - Baptism (from Koinē Greek: βάπτισμα, romanized: váptisma, lit.'immerse, dip in water') is a Christian sacrament of initiation and adoption,[2] almost invariably with the use of water. It may be performed by sprinkling or pouring water on the head, or by immersing in water either partially or completely, traditionally three times, once for each person of the Trinity. The synoptic gospels recount that John the Baptist baptised Jesus. Baptism is considered a sacrament in most churches, and as an ordinance in others. Baptism according to the Trinitarian formula, which is done in most mainstream Christian denominations, is seen as being a basis for Christian ecumenism, the concept of unity amongst Christians. Baptism is also called christening,[14][15] although some reserve the word christening for the baptism of infants. In certain Christian denominations, such as the Catholic Churches, Eastern Orthodox Churches, Oriental Orthodox Churches, Assyrian Church of the East, and Lutheran Churches, baptism is the door to church membership, with candidates taking baptismal vows. It has also given its name to the Baptist churches and denominations.
Some Christian thinking regards baptism as necessary for salvation, but some writers, such as Huldrych Zwingli (14841531), have denied its necessity. Though water baptism is extremely common among Christian denominations, some, such as the Quakers and the Salvation Army, do not practice water baptism at all.[20] Among denominations that practice water baptism, differences occur in the manner and mode of baptizing and in the understanding of the significance of the rite. Most Christians baptize using the trinitarian formula in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (following the Great Commission), but Oneness Pentecostals baptize using Jesus' name only. Much more than half of all Christians baptize infants
many others, such as Baptist Churches, regard only believer's baptism as true baptism.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX2F8 - DW Sports Fitness is a British retailing and fitness business, founded as a result of Dave Whelan's purchase of 50 JJB Sports fitness clubs with attached retail stores for £83.4 million in March 2009. The business would later encompass more than 140 sites, which included expansion to stand-alone retail stores and stand-alone fitness clubs. In 2011, the business joined buying group Intersport, and began using its name within its facades, and in 2016 it joint-purchased the Fitness First UK business alongside The Gym Group and Greenwich Leisure Limited.
In August 2020, it announced that DW Sports Fitness was to enter administration. A considerable number of its locations were then purchased by Frasers Group, who turned them into Everlast Fitness Club and Sports Direct locations, whilst some Fitness First locations would continue. It is understood that 922 jobs out of 1,700 were saved by Frasers Group. The DW Sports Fitness brand continues administration and realisation. DW Stadium in Wigan remains named as such for the time being.
In 2016, DW Sports Fitness acquired all 62 Fitness First clubs in the UK from Oaktree Capital Management, selling 14 of those and continuing to operate 48 under the Fitness First brand.
As of August 2020 DW Sports Fitness operated 73 gyms, 43 of them under the Fitness First brand.
In June 2020 the company announced that 25 retail stores would be closing down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.
On 3 August 2020 it announced that it was to enter administration with all stores eventually closing, and that it was working with the administrators to save some of the gyms from closure. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7XF8W - A road in Warrington has been slammed for having what's claimed to be the biggest pothole in the Cheshire town.
Thelwall Lane, in Latchford, is lined with houses and businesses and it's suffered due to the worsening state of the road.
Warrington South Conservative MP Andy Carter questioned if it was the biggest pothole in his constituency.
The condition of the road, which runs next to the Manchester Ship Canal, has visibly deteriorated over winter.
It's the only route for large wagons and trucks to access industrial sites and units at the bottom, which has increased the pothole's size.
The road is owned by Peel Ports Ltd, yet is due for adoption' by Warrington Borough Council.
Andy Carter said there are plans to repair and resurface the whole lane, yet a timescale for the work is unknown.
He wrote: Is this largest pot hole in Warrington South?
I've heard from residents and businesses based on Thelwall Lane in Latchford about the worsening state of the road over the last few weeks.
The road is due for adoption by Warrington Council but is currently owned by Peel Ports.
I've been advised that there is a plan to repair and totally resurface. I've written to the CEO of Peel to ask for a timescale for the work to be completed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69CF8 - Section 24 means that private landlords can no longer offset mortgage payments
The Government has made recent changes to individual landlord's tax relief. Since April 2020 buy-to-let landlords have had to pay income tax on the entire rental income, regardless of how much is taken by mortgage interest. Instead, this has been replaced with a 20% tax credit, meaning private landlords with a mortgage can no longer offset mortgage interest costs in full against income tax bills on rent.
As a result, landlords now pay tax on rental income based on revenue rather than their profit after mortgage interest is paid. For those of you thinking of setting up a limited company, you'll be glad to know that mortgage interest is treated as a business expense. That means if your property is owned by a limited company, you can minus the cost before paying corporation tax. If this is something you are considering, it's always smart to obtain financial advice from a registered tax expert.
What are the implications of the Capital Gains Tax changes?
There have been recent tweaks to Capital Gains Tax. This means that buy-to-let investors also face a heftier tax bill on profits when they sell up. The Capital Gains Tax rate on residential property is 28% for higher rate taxpayers and 18% for basic rate taxpayers versus 18% and 10% on other assets.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WKN - This photograph shows an illuminated Christmas display outside a residential property on Ellesmere Road in Stockton Heath, a suburban area of Warrington in Cheshire. The front garden and railings are decorated with strings of white LED lights, alongside large inflatable festive figures including Santa Claus, a snowman, and a decorated Christmas tree, creating a bright and cheerful seasonal scene.
The image was taken at night during the winter months, most likely in December, when Christmas decorations are traditionally displayed across the United Kingdom. The warm glow of the lights contrasts with the darkness of the evening, highlighting the brick façade of the house and the bay window behind the display. The arrangement reflects a common British tradition of decorating homes to mark the Christmas season and contribute to a shared sense of community celebration.
Inflatable decorations such as these have become increasingly popular in recent years, valued for their bold visual impact and ease of installation. In residential areas like Stockton Heath, such displays are often enjoyed by neighbours and passers-by and can become informal local landmarks during the festive period.
Images like this are frequently used to illustrate themes of Christmas, winter celebrations, suburban life, community spirit, seasonal decoration, and British holiday traditions. The photograph captures a familiar and relatable moment of festive enthusiasm within a UK neighbourhood streetscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3JBD4 - The council said there were:
No operational reasons to keep the building in council use or occupied beyond this point, allowing the site to be cleared for redevelopment.
Justifying the demolition, Warrington said the building has poor energy efficiency, high service costs, and is inflexible for modern office and business working
Cost estimates for refurbishment, M&E installation, and energy efficiency measures to keep the building in office use stand at £5m
even if this is actioned, the building would still have limitations for flexible modern working practices and energy efficiency.
The council had explored renting the building out but said: there was no demand for office space of this scale and quality
a sale was also considered but the council found market demand was not significant.
Residential is the most likely outcome for the site, and it will be built into a masterplan for an area including Scotland Road, Town Hill, and Cockhedge. The council said it would look to sell the site in future.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JNA - This image shows the narrowboat Terbulance travelling along the Bridgewater Canal near the village of Lymm in Cheshire. The green-painted canal boat is captured moving slowly beneath a traditional brick bridge, with trees and vegetation lining the waterway and sunlight filtering through the leaves, creating a calm summer atmosphere.
The Bridgewater Canal is one of Britain's most historically significant waterways, often described as the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution. Today it is primarily used for leisure boating, walking, and cycling, offering a quieter alternative to modern transport and a strong connection to England's industrial and rural heritage.
Narrowboats such as Terbulance are designed for the narrow locks and channels of the UK canal system and are commonly used for holidays, long-term cruising, or as floating homes. The presence of the towpath, grassy banks, and low brick bridge reflects the enduring character of Britain's inland waterways, where historic infrastructure continues to support contemporary leisure use.
Photographed in daylight during summer, the image emphasises themes of slow travel, countryside recreation, and heritage transport. It is well suited to editorial use covering British canals, inland waterways, leisure boating, rural England, tourism, and the preservation and modern use of historic canal networks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X9BP77 - A memorial stone dedicated to Tim Parry and Johnathan Ball on Bridge Street in Warrington, Cheshire, England, photographed with flowers and soft toys placed at its base. The tribute commemorates the two children killed in the IRA bombing that took place in the town centre in March 1993.
The memorial stands close to the site of the attack and has become a focal point for remembrance, reflection, and peace advocacy. The presence of children's toys alongside floral tributes highlights the loss of young lives and the lasting emotional impact of the bombing on the local community and the wider public.
The Warrington bombing remains one of the most significant incidents of mainland UK terrorism linked to the Northern Ireland conflict. Memorials such as this serve both as acts of remembrance and as public statements against violence, often attracting tributes on anniversaries and during periods of renewed public reflection on peace and reconciliation.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating UK terrorism memorials, public remembrance, community responses to violence, British social history, the legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict in England, and civic spaces of memory and reflection.

Plans continue to develop for the full refurbishment of Stockton Heath swing bridge, with works targeted to take place next year.
The works will involve Peel Ports investing around £6million in undertaking a complete structural, mechanical, electrical refurbishment and repainting programme to improve the longevity of this key asset.
The swing bridge, across the Manchester Ship Canal, links Stockton Heath village to the town centre and the north.
Peel Ports and Warrington Borough Council are in advanced discussions for the major refurbishment works to begin in April 2023. This date has been chosen in order to ensure that there is sufficient time for preparations to be made for these works, to ensure that their impact can be mitigated as much as possible.
However, it is clear that these essential works will cause considerable disruption, and both Peel Ports and the council feel it is vital to give as much warning time as possible of the planned works.
The chosen start date will also ensure that the majority of the works are undertaken during more favourable weather conditions. In addition, the inclusion of the summer holidays in the works period (where traffic flows and associated disruption will also be reduced), aims to minimise disruption to children travelling to and from school.
Peel Ports estimate that the works will take approximately nine months to complete and have ensured 12 months' notice to communicate this so bridge users can make alternative arrangements during this time.
Their appointed contractor has looked at all options to undertake these works while maintaining some access for people to cross the bridge. However, due to the extent of the refurbishment, the works can only be carried out safely with the bridge being completely closed to all users, including pedestrians, cyclists

It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index
On 22 May 2018, it was confirmed that over 100 stores will have closed by 2022 in a radical plan. On 18 August 2020, M&S stated that they would cut 7,000 jobs over the next three months owing to the coronavirus pandemic. In May 2021, the company announced plans to close another 30 shops over the next 10 years as part of its turnaround plan
The company was founded by a partnership between Michael Marks, a Polish Jew born in Slonim (now Belarus), who had migrated to Leeds, England in the early 1880s, and Thomas Spencer, a cashier from the English market town of Skipton in North Yorkshire
In 1901, Marks moved to the Birkenhead open market, where he amalgamated his business with Spencer. In 1903, the two men were allocated stall numbers 11 & 12 in the centre aisle, and there they opened the Penny Bazaar. The company left Birkenhead Market on 24 February 1923.
The next few years saw Michael Marks and Tom Spencer move the original Leeds Penny Bazaar to 20, Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester, and they also opened market stalls in many locations around the North West of England
Marks and Spencer, known colloquially as Marks and Sparks, or M&S, made its reputation in the early 20th century with a policy of only selling British-made goods (it started to back down from this policy in the 1990s). It entered into long-term relationships with British manufacturers, and sold clothes and food under the St Michael brand

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JB87A2 - St Oswald's Church, is in the village of Winwick, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Winwick.
History
A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580. Much damage was done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank. The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 184749 for the 13th Earl of Derby. The spire was rebuilt and the church was restored in 1869 by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. On Thursday 13 January 1887, Titanic Captain Edward Smith married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in the church. In 193132 Henry Paley successor in the Lancaster architectural practice, now known as Austin and Paley, restored the tower at a cost of £463, and in 1934 he added a new vestry, porch and entrance at a cost of £232
The church is built of sandstone with a metal, stainless steel, roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a nave of six bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chapel in the east bay of each aisle, a chancel and sanctuary of three bays, and a north vestry. The south chapel is the Legh Chapel and the north chapel belonged to the Gerard family. The tower is in three stages and has a recessed spire. On the west face is a door above which is a three-light window.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBXJM0 - The Halliwell Jones Stadium is a rugby league stadium in Warrington, England, which is the home ground of the Warrington Wolves. It has also staged Challenge Cup semi-finals, the European Nations Final, the National League Grand Finals' Day, two games of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup and four games of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. It is the 62nd largest stadium in England.
Ground was broke at the new site in 2002 and bucked the common trend of modern stadia by including terracing areas rather than being an all-seater stadium, with the South and West stands both containing terracing It also has enormous pitch dimensions of 120 m x 74 m, as requested by Warrington's head coach of the time, Paul Cullen, due to his desire to play expansive rugby. The stadium officially opened in 2004
On 3 March 2011, the club announced that the corners of the East Stand at the stadium would be filled in to create a further 2,000 spaces made up of seating and terracing for the 2012 season. The stadium capacity, set at 15,000 for the first sell-out home match against St. Helens in 2012, was increased to 15,200 and can grow to 15,693 as the club proves it can handle the bigger crowds and get extra safety certificates. The club has also announced plans to increase the stadium's capacity to around 22,000 should the need arise.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. The new church opened in 2010, and may be the first newly-built Catholic church to be dedicated to Blessed John Henry Newman - More at https://taking-stock.org.uk/building/blessed-john-henry-newman-latchford/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DCE9P1 - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

One pound is equivalent to 100 pence. Three British Overseas Territories also have currencies called pounds which are at par with the pound sterling.
The Bank of England has a monopoly of banknote issuance in England and Wales but, for historic reasons, three banks in Scotland and four banks in Northern Ireland are permitted to issue their own currency but the law requires that the issuing banks hold a sum of Bank of England banknotes (or gold) equivalent to the total value of notes issued. Versions of the pound sterling issued by Crown dependencies and other areas are regulated only by local governments and not the Bank of England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00AP - Papaver somniferum, commonly known as the opium poppy or breadseed poppy, is a species of flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae. It is the species of plant from which both opium and poppy seeds are derived and is also a valuable ornamental plant, grown in gardens. Its native range is probably the eastern Mediterranean, but is now obscured by ancient introductions and cultivation, being naturalized across much of Europe and Asia.
This poppy is grown as an agricultural crop on a large scale, for one of three primary purposes. The first is to produce seeds that are eaten by humans, known commonly as poppy seed. The second is to produce opium for use mainly by the pharmaceutical industry. The third is to produce other alkaloids, mainly thebaine and oripavine, that are processed by the pharmaceutical industry into drugs such as hydrocodone and oxycodone. Each of these goals has special breeds that are targeted at one of these businesses, and breeding efforts (including biotechnological ones) are continually underway. A comparatively small amount of Papaver somniferum is also produced commercially for ornamental purposes.
The common name opium poppy is increasingly a misnomer as many varieties have been bred that do not produce a significant quantity of opium. The cultivar 'Sujata' produces no latex at all. Breadseed poppy is more accurate as a common name today because all varieties of Papaver somniferum produce edible seeds. This differentiation has strong implications for legal policy surrounding the growing of this plant

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BM725A - Cable & Wireless plc was a British telecommunications company. In the mid-1980s, it became the first company in the UK to offer an alternative telephone service to British Telecom (via subsidiary Mercury Communications). The company later offered cable TV to its customers, but it sold its cable assets to NTL in 2000. It remained a significant player in the UK telecoms market and in certain overseas markets, especially in the former British colonies of the Caribbean, where it was formerly the monopoly incumbent. It was also the main supplier of communication in the British South Atlantic, including Saint Helena and the Falkland Islands. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
The company split in March 2010, with its international division demerging to form Cable & Wireless Communications. The remainder of the Cable & Wireless business became Cable & Wireless Worldwide and was acquired by Vodafone in 2012.

In the early 1800 (1805 1808 ish) a house stood at the corner of London Road and Walton Road which was the home of Edward Fenna and his family who was the Parish Constable. Outside the house were the Parish Stocks (removed 1850). The house was called the Stone Jug. Fenna would not have had a uniform and was unpaid for the work he did, which was not a lot. He would walk the streets with a lantern at night and have a rattle for attracting attention. He did get paid expenses for duties such as relief of the poor, flogging people and putting people in the stocks, etc.
In 1864 a single storey building was built on the existing site and there was one Sergeant and one PC for the village. The area outside the Police Station (Victoria Square) was called Pigeon Bank' and belonged to the Police Station. Every year the fairground from Warrington (Silcocks) would stop at Stockton Heath on their way to Stoke. With the permission of Sgt. Norris they set up their tents, Dobbie horses (roundabouts), Coconut Shy's etc. It is recorded that one year Sgt. Norris' son who was of age' (over 12 generally) came out of the Police Station, jumped on a Dobbie Horse and broke it.
In 1911 that Police Station was closed and demolished with a new Police Station opening the following year. The dates are to be seen on the headers of the drainpipes.
The new Station incorporated a Magistrate's Court and living quarters for the Inspector. Gas lamps, some of which can still be seen in the cells, illuminated the Police Station. The Inspector's house that was the area now used by the writing room, gents toilet and kitchen and upstairs the waiting room toilets and Court two. The Inspector's daughter who lived until recently in Stockton Heath recalled that her bedroom was the Court Waiting Room. After she came home from school she would have to clean and polish the Court floors for no payment.

Purpose
The Environment Agency's stated purpose is, to protect or enhance the environment, taken as a whole so as to promote the objective of achieving sustainable development (taken from the Environment Act 1995, section 4). Protection of the environment relates to threats such as flood and pollution. The vision of the Agency is of a rich, healthy and diverse environment for present and future generations.
Scope
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters.[2] In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive.
There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.

It has a cobbled square, St Wilfs at its centre and the Parr Arms Pub.
St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 187374 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 187374 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000

The phrase polling station is also used in American English and in British English, although polling place is the building and polling station is the specific room (or part of a room) where voters cast their votes. A polling place can contain one or more polling stations.
Since elections generally take place over a one- or two-day span on a periodic basis, often annual or longer, polling places are usually located in facilities used for other purposes, such as schools, churches, sports halls, local government offices, or even private homes, and may each serve a similar number of people. The area may be known as a ward, precinct, polling district or constituency. The polling place is staffed by officials (who may be called election judges, returning officers or other titles) who monitor the voting procedures and assist voters with the election process. Scrutineers (or poll-watchers) are independent or partisan observers who attend the poll to ensure the impartiality of the process.
The facility will be open between specified hours depending on the type of election, and political activity by or on behalf of those standing in the ballot is usually prohibited within the venue and immediately surrounding area.

Daresbury was the birthplace of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll, in All Saints' Vicarage. Daresbury has a Lewis Carroll Visitor Centre and the parish church, All Saints, a Lewis Carroll window, including an image of the Cheshire Cat.Lewis Carroll as born 27 January 1832 14 January 1898.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel by English author Lewis Carroll (the pseudonym of Charles Dodgson). It tells of a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a subterranean fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children.
The Daniell Chapel contains one of the best-known features of All Saints', the Lewis Carroll Memorial Window. To mark the centenary of his birth, Carroll enthusiasts from all over the world subscribed to a memorial fund, which resulted in a gift to All Saints' of this striking and unusual stained glass window, dedicated in 1935.
The window was designed by the stained glass artist Geoffrey Webb and depicts a Nativity scene, at which both Carroll and Alice are present. Below the Nativity scene are 5 panels illustrated with characters and scenes from Alice in Wonderland including the White Rabbit, the Lizard, the Dodo, the Caterpillar, Fish-Footman, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, March Hare, Duchess, Gryphon, Mock Turtle, Knave and Queen of Hearts. The famous Cheshire Cat can be found in the centre of the fifth panel. The 3 centre panels contain verses from the Lewis Carroll's poem Christmas Greetings (From a Fairy to a Child)'.
Geoffrey Webb's mark was a spider's web that he would incorporate into the design of his windows. The web can be found in the fifth section of the Window, just above the Queen of Hearts and includes the date 1935'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF4A - Sturmey-Archer is a manufacturing company originally from Nottingham, England. It primarily produces bicycle hub gears, brakes and a great many other sundry bicycle components, most prominently during their heyday as a subsidiary of the Raleigh Bicycle Company. In the past, it also manufactured motorcycle hubs, gearboxes and engines.
The company was founded in 1902 by Henry Sturmey and James Archer under the guidance of Frank Bowden, the primary owner of Raleigh. In 2000, the assets and trademarks of Sturmey-Archer were sold to Sun Race of Taiwan which was renamed Sun Race Sturmey-Archer Inc and production moved to Taiwan.
All Sturmey Archer gear hubs use epicyclic (planetary) geartrains of varying complexity. The AW is the simplest, using one set of planetary gears with four planets. The AM uses three compound planets with differently sized cogs machined from a common shaft to engage the gear ring and sun gear separately, while the close-ratio three-speeds, and hubs with four or more speeds, use multiple planetary geartrains. Depending on the specific hub these may be in series with each other, or with one or the other set being selectable at any given time by locking a particular sun gear to the axle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF4J - Terracotta, terra cotta or terra-cotta
Italian: baked earth, from the Latin terra cocta), a type of earthenware, is a clay-based unglazed or glazed ceramic, where the fired body is porous. Terracotta is the term normally used for sculpture made in earthenware, and also for various practical uses including vessels (notably flower pots), water and waste water pipes, roofing tiles, bricks, and surface embellishment in building construction. The term is also used to refer to the natural brownish orange color of most terracotta, which varies considerably.
This article covers the senses of terracotta as a medium in sculpture, as in the Terracotta Army and Greek terracotta figurines, and architectural decoration. Asian and European sculpture in porcelain is not covered. Glazed architectural terracotta and its unglazed version as exterior surfaces for buildings were used in Asia for some centuries before becoming popular in the West in the 19th century. Architectural terracotta can also refer to decorated ceramic elements such as antefixes and revetments, which made a large contribution to the appearance of temples and other buildings in the classical architecture of Europe, as well as in the Ancient Near East.
In archaeology and art history, terracotta is often used to describe objects such as figurines not made on a potter's wheel. Vessels and other objects that are or might be made on a wheel from the same material are called earthenware pottery
the choice of term depends on the type of object rather than the material or firing technique. Unglazed pieces, and those made for building construction and industry, are also more likely to be referred to as terracotta, whereas tableware and other vessels are called earthenware (though sometimes terracotta if unglazed), or by a more precise term such as faience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF4R - The Ministry of Agriculture launched one month on from the outbreak of the Second World War, one of the most memorable slogans of the whole conflict - 'Dig for Victory'.
From this point on, the whole of Britain's home front were encouraged to transform their private gardens into mini-allotments. It was believed, quite rightly, that this would not only provide essential crops for families and neighbourhoods alike, but help the war effort by freeing up valuable space for war materials on the merchant shipping convoys. Indeed, over just a few months, Britain saw its green and pleasant land transformed with gardens, flowerbeds and parkland dug up for the plantation of vegetables.
By 1943, over a million tons of vegetables were being grown in gardens and allotments.
During the course of the war, many propagandist moves were made to promote the importance of 'growing your own'. In addition to the circulation of familiar Ministry of Agriculture 'food flashes', literature and poster displays, anthems were also introduced. One such 'Dig for Victory' anthem went
Dig! Dig! Dig! And your muscles will grow big
Keep on pushing the spade
Don't mind the worms
Just ignore their squirms
And when your back aches laugh with glee
And keep on diggin'
Till we give our foes a Wiggin'
Dig! Dig! Dig! to Victory

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K41KR0 - Thorntons Limited is a British chocolate manufacturer owned by the Italian confectionery company, Ferrero. It was established in 1911 by Joseph William Thornton and his father in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
When Cadbury became part of the Mondelez International predecessor Kraft Foods, Thorntons had become the largest confectionery-only parent company in Britain. The company was purchased by the Italian firm Ferrero in June 2015 for £112m.
Until and during the Second World War, the company was an established toffee and fudge maker. With post war rationing ending, the group's primary focus shifted to Belgian and Swiss-style chocolate in sets.
Thorntons began in Sheffield in 1911, the business being started by Joseph William Thornton (18701919), who co opened the company's first shop, at 159 Norfolk Street. Norman, his son, became the manager, at the age of just 15. Later in the company's history, Peter Thornton (grandson of the founder) served as chairman, but was dismissed from the role in June 1987
It was announced in June 2015 that chocolate producer Ferrero would buy Thorntons, for £112 million. Thorntons Ltd are 75% owned by Ferholding UK Ltd, which, in turn, is controlled by Giovanni Ferrero (who holds over 50% of voting rights).[citation needed]
With Ferrero investment into the business to try to increase revenue, through the financial year of 2017 to 2018 sales and production increased. Fewer new shops were opened with some existing locations diversified into cafés, selling a range of both eat-in and take-away food and drinks alongside the traditional confectionary lines. In 2020, Thorntons won the Lausanne Index Prize - Bronze Award.
On 15 March 2021, it was announced that all 61 remaining Thorntons retail stores were to close after UK government COVID-19 pandemic restrictions lifted. The pandemic restrictions had meant that all Thorntons retail stores had closed for much of 2020, and the business was now going to restructure

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AF831P - CSIs examine crime scenes to gather forensic evidence that will ultimately lead to the detection and prosecution of criminals.
CSIs are not police officers, they are support staff: civilians who are employed by police forces.
A Police CSI unit provides cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
CSIs are trained to identify, record and recover forensic evidence from all types of crime, ranging from criminal damage, burglary and vehicle crime (known as volume crime) to more serious crime types including arson and murder.
However, a CSI could be asked to attend almost any incident where the potential for forensic evidence has been identified. Unlike CSI Miami CSIs in Cheshire do not analyse evidence themselves or arrest criminals!
CSIs use a wide variety of techniques and equipment to recover forensic evidence. This may include recording the crime scene by taking photographs, powdering for offender's fingerprints, searching for footprints or marks left by tools, taking swabs of blood or collecting fibres, hair, paint or glass.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9AER - Prosecco is an Italian white wine. Prosecco controlled designation of origin can be spumante (sparkling wine), frizzante (semi-sparkling wine), or tranquillo (still wine). It is made from Glera grapes, formerly known also as Prosecco, but other grape varieties may be included. The following varieties are traditionally used with Glera up to a maximum of 15 per cent of the total: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. The name Prosecco is derived from the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated.
Prosecco DOC is produced in nine provinces spanning the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. Prosecco Superiore DOCG comes in two varieties: Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, which can only be made in the Treviso province of Veneto on the hills between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene (north of Treviso), and the smaller Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced near the town of Asolo.
Prosecco is the main ingredient of the Bellini cocktail and can be a less expensive substitute of Champagne. It is also a key ingredient of venetian spritz, a popular cocktail in northern Italy.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4556143485 - 'St Thomas' Church is in Stockton Heath, to the south of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building,[1] and is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.
The present church was built in 1868 on the site of a former church that had been erected in 1838. It was designed by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley, the main benefactor being Sir Gilbert Greenall. The tower was added later although a full set of bells were not installed until 2016. The current ring of 10 bells consists of 8 bells donated from St. John the Baptist, Bollington supplemented with two new trebles cast by John Taylor &
Co. A campaign to keep a tolling bell dating from 1883 dedicated to the wife of John Crosfield (son of Joseph Crosfield) took place in an attempt to retain the bell locally.
It is constructed in pinkish-red sandstone with Westmorland slate roofs. Its plan consists of a four-bay nave with a south aisle under a parallel ridged roof, a south porch, a north transept, a north vestry, a two-bay chancel and a west tower. The tower is in four stages with an octagonal southeast turret and an embattled parapet.
The chancel is decorated with richly coloured patterned tilework and the reredos is of marble and embossed patterned tiles. The organ was built around 1880 by Young and Sons and rebuilt in 1963 by Rushworth and Dreaper of Liverpool.
The churchyard contains the war graves of 31 service personnel, 17 from World War I and 14 from World War II.

The charity, on Winmarleigh Street, has faced repeated closure threats since financial resources were cut last year.
Generous residents and organisations were hailed after helping the organisation, which opened its doors in the town in 1855, smash its \u00a340,000 fundraising target in 2016.
However, despite the support from across the borough, along with many grant applications, the battle has sadly been lost.
A disgrace IMHO.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PYX9B0 - The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel who have died in war, and represents a common or field poppy, Papaver rhoeas. Inspired by the World War I poem In Flanders Fields, and promoted by Moina Michael, they were first adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war (19141918). They were then adopted by military veterans' groups in parts of the British Empire.
Today, they are mostly used in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, to commemorate their servicemen and women killed in all conflicts. There, small artificial poppies are often worn on clothing leading up to Remembrance Day/Armistice Day, and poppy wreaths are often laid at war memorials. In Australia and New Zealand, they are also worn on Anzac Day.
The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal has caused some controversy, with someincluding British Army veteransarguing that it has become excessive, is being used to marshal support behind British military campaigns, and that public figures are pressured to wear poppies.
In the United Kingdom, remembrance poppies are sold by The Royal British Legion (RBL). This is a charity providing financial, social, political and emotional support to those who have served or who are currently serving in the British Armed Forces, and their dependants. They are sold on the streets by volunteers in the weeks before Remembrance Day. The remembrance poppy is the trademark of The Royal British Legion. The RBL state, The red poppy is our registered mark and its only lawful use is to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal
its yearly fundraising drive in the weeks before Remembrance Day. The RBL says these poppies are worn to commemorate the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and to show support to those still serving today. Other poppy merchandise is sold throughout the year as part of the ongoing fundraising.

The police, the local authority or the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency - DVLA can clamp and tow away cars or other vehicles parked illegally on roads or public land. The DVLA may act when it has the lawful authority to do so when a car is untaxed unless it is on your own property.
For example, the police or the local authority can remove a car that is contravening a parking restriction, is blocking the road or has broken down.
Fines Enforcement Officers can organise for a car to be seized if you have not paid a number of fines.
Another organisation that can clamp or tow cars is the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). VOSA enforcement officers can do this when a car is a danger to road users. This often applies to commercial vehicles such as lorries where they are not roadworthy, they are overloaded, the driver has been driving for too many hours or has not paid a financial fine that VOSA has issued to them.

The war on motorists has got to stop, said Tory MP Robert Halfon.
Whether it is hospital parking charges, or council parking fees, motorists are seen as a cash cow and are being hit by one stealth tax after another.

Following research and a demonstration of various types of defibrillators, the Parish Council decided to team up with the Heartbeat Community Trust to establish a managed service for our defibrillator that has been placed in the phone box.
Many thanks are owed to the owners of the Hatton Arms for arranging for the installation of the cabinet and for providing the necessary power source. The defibrillator is active and will be checked on a weekly basis. It has been registered with the North West Ambulance Service and our agreement with CHT means that support is available to reinstate it following use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTAE6 - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (27 January 1832 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer of world-famous children's fiction, notably Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. He was noted for his facility at word play, logic and fantasy. The poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer and Anglican deacon.
Carroll came from a family of High Church Anglicans, and developed a long relationship with Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar and teacher. It was the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, whose daughter Alice is widely identified as the original for Alice in Wonderland, though Carroll always denied this.
Several aspects of Carroll's life appear to confirm suspicions that he was a pedophile, though scholars have also made a credible case in his defence. In the absence of hard evidence, the issue of Carroll's hidden private life has provoked a lively debate, especially in recent times.
Dodgson was born in the small parsonage at Daresbury in Cheshire near the towns of Warrington and Runcorn, the eldest boy but already the third child of the four-and-a-half-year-old marriage. Eight more children followed. When Charles was 11, his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTAFD - Aesculus hippocastanum is a large tree, growing to about 39 metres (128 ft) tall with a domed crown of stout branches
on old trees the outer branches are often pendulous with curled-up tips. The leaves are opposite and palmately compound, with 57 leaflets
each leaflet is 1330 cm long, making the whole leaf up to 60 cm across, with a 720 cm petiole. The leaf scars left on twigs after the leaves have fallen have a distinctive horseshoe shape, complete with seven nails. The flowers are usually white with a yellow to pink blotch at the base of the petals
they are produced in spring in erect panicles 1030 cm tall with about 2050 flowers on each panicle. Usually only 15 fruit develop on each panicle
the shell is a green, spiky capsule containing one (rarely two or three) nut-like seeds called conkers or horse-chestnuts. Each conker is 24 cm diameter, glossy nut-brown with a whitish scar at the base.
The common name horse-chestnut (often unhyphenated) is reported as having originated from the erroneous belief that the tree was a kind of chestnut (though in fact only distantly related), together with the observation that the fruit could help panting horses.
Aesculus hippocastanum is native to a small area in the Pindus Mountains mixed forests and Balkan mixed forests of South East Europe. However, it can be found in many parts of Europe as far north as Gästrikland in Sweden, as well as in many parks and cities in the United States and Canada.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9XYC - The town's three community recycling centres (CRCs) are located in Stockton Heath, on Sandy Lane, Gatewarth, on Barnard Street, and Woolston, on New Cut Lane.
The village site was saved in 2014 following a huge public outcry over plans to shut it.
A petition opposing any proposed closure was launched in April after the Warrington Guardian revealed the tip had been earmarked for closure.
The petition, which has secured more than 3,000 signatures, has been submitted to the authority.
During Tuesday's executive board meeting, members approved plans to carry out a six-week consultation 'on the current and potential future provision of waste recycling services' at the facility.
In her report to members, Cllr Judith Guthrie, executive board member for environment and public protection, said: Given the current site constraints of Stockton Heath, with particular regard to the size and access restrictions, together with the impact on immediate neighbours, officers understand that obtaining the required environmental permit would be challenging, in respect to both achieving technical and environmental specification compliance.
However, before any decision is made on the future of Stockton Heath, we propose to undertake a consultation on the provision of waste recycling services at the site to obtain consultees' views on future options.
The current budget for the operation of the three CRCs is £854,854, which includes disposal and management fee haulage costs.
However, the cost of operating these sites in 2017-18 was £1,149,110 an overspend of £294,256.
Deputy council leader Cllr Russ Bowden said: What is clear to me is, if we are designing a waste system for Warrington with a blank sheet of paper, it would not look anything like this.
I think what we can see is the Stockton Heath site is far more expensive to run than the other two.
It is right the council consults with the public about the future provision of that site.

I think what we can see is the Stockton Heath site is far more expensive to run than the other two.
It is right the council consults with the public about the future provision of that site.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9Y69 - Lewis Carroll was the son of Charles Dodgson, the Rector of All Saint's Church in Daresbury village and Frances Jane Lutwidge, his real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the pen name Lewis Carroll is derived from his first 2 names, Charles and Lutwidge. He lived in the parsonage, which was bult in 1819, until 1843 when he was 11 years old when his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees and the family went to live in North Yorkshire.
The parsonage was a large, double-fronted dwelling built from stone and hand made bricks, it had a schoolroom, parlour, cellars and seven upstairs rooms. Nine of Charles' ten siblings were also born in the house, his father took in paying pupils who stayed to learn Latin and Ancient Greek. The 1841 census lists a total of 22 people living in the house.
Though it was a happy home for the Dodgson family, the house was distant from the rector's parishoners at Daresbury. It was empty when it burnt down in around 1884.
The site contains a commemorative stone and a series of interpretive displays. The entrance to the parsonage is marked by a metal arch which echoes the archway that led into the original house, while the well, which once stood at the rear of the house, features a dormouse worked in metal. The sculpture which traces where the walls would have stood was designed by Christine Wilcox-Baker and crafted by Dave Broadbent. The site is now owned by the National Trust.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC2FJN - Grappenhall Cricket Club played its first game in 1881 on a ground in Bellhouse Lane. The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed.
From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.
In 1982, the 1st XI went one better, this time winning the league and cup double with the HC Cup Final being one of a number of appearances the club mate at Old Trafford in the 80's.
The double was repeated in 1987 with another appearance at Old Trafford, this time with the team including another future Lancashire star and future Grappers captain in Steve Titchard. In the same season, the 2nd XI also tasted success by winning the Worthington Cup.
There were a number of other cup successes for the club during this period for the different senior and junior teams, with many a memorable game taking place and the tales still being regaled today.
In 1992, the club were in their last season in Manchester Association before a move to the CCCL

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGTXD4 - Dorney Lake (also known as Eton College Rowing Centre, and as Eton Dorney as a 2012 Summer Olympics venue) is a purpose-built rowing lake in England. It is near the village of Dorney, Buckinghamshire, and is around 3 km (2 miles) west of Windsor and Eton, close to the River Thames.
The lake is privately owned and financed by Eton College, which spent £17 million developing it. Additional grants, totalling £500,000, were obtained from Sport England, UK Sport, the DCMS and SEEDA in order to build the lake's finish tower. The project was completed in 2006, after 10 years of construction. Although it is primarily for use by the school, the facilities are hired out for rowing, as well as for canoeing, dragon boating, open water swimming and triathlon.
Since the lake was opened, a number of annual regattas that were previously held on the River Thames have been transferred to the lake. These include the Marlow Regatta in June, the Metropolitan Regatta in May/June, and the Wallingford Regatta in May.
The lake's dimensions follow the FISA rules for a rowing lake suitable for hosting a World Rowing Championship, World Rowing Cup or Olympic regatta:
Stillwater, with consistent water conditions
2,200 metres (7,200 ft) straight length for racing
8 rowing lanes, each 13.5 metres (44 ft) wide
Minimum water depth of 3.5 metres (11 ft)
A return channel allowing boats to move to the start, separated from the main lake by an island

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H0GD13 - Grappenhall is a suburban village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is situated along the Bridgewater Canal, and forms one of the principal settlements of Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish. According to the 2001 UK census, the population of the entire civil parish was 9,377.
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book with the name Gropenhale and with a valuation of five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs the Parr Arms and the Ram's Head and Grappenhall Hall Residential School (no longer a Residential School) and St. Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. The village name appears in the title of the song Grappenhall Rag, by the Darwen singer-songwriter Bryn Haworth.
Grappenhall is home to the 25th Warrington East (St. Wilfrid's) Scout Troop. There is also a cricket ground, which is the home of Grappenhall Cricket Club.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY019K - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse.[3] The foundations of this church were discovered during the 187374 restoration.[4]

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GGWHCB - Maize also known as corn, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. The leafy stalk of the plant produces pollen inflorescences and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears that yield kernels or seeds, which are fruits.
Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice. However, little of this maize is consumed directly by humans: most is used for corn ethanol, animal feed and other maize products, such as corn starch and corn syrup. The six major types of maize are dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn.
Maize is widely cultivated throughout the world, and a greater weight of maize is produced each year than any other grain. In 2014, total world production was 1.04 billion tonnes, led by the United States with 35% of the total. China produced 21% of the global total.
In 2016, maize (corn) production was forecast to be over 15 billion bushels, an increase of 11% over 2014 American production. Based on conditions as of August 2016, the expected yield would be the highest ever for the United States. The area of harvested maize was forecast to be 87 million acres, an increase of 7% over 2015. Maize is especially popular in Midwestern states such as Indiana and Illinois
in the latter, it was named the state's official grain in 2017

The 6ft 8in former basketball player held the torch high into the air as office workers hung out of windows to see the torch make its way down Sankey Street. He said: \u201cI loved it here. The streets were packed and there were a lot of children. \u201cI loved seeing their faces. Everyone could see it was something special.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64TRX - St Mary's Church is the Anglican parish church of Lymm, Warrington, Cheshire, England, standing on a bank overlooking Lymm Dam. It is a grade II listed building. It is an active church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.
History
The Domesday Book shows that a church was on the site in the 11th century. Since then it has been rebuilt a number of times. The present church was built in 185052 to a design by John Dobson of Newcastle. The nave and aisles from an older church dating from the 15th century were blown up with gunpowder prior to the rebuilding.[4] Alterations and additions were made to the church in 187072 by the Chester architect John Douglas, including an organ chamber and the reredos. The tower was replaced in 188890 by J. S. Crowther.
Architecture - Exterior
The church is built in buff sandstone. Its plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a north porch, transepts, a chancel, and a vestry. The tower is in three stages with diagonal buttresses and an embattled top. Its west window is in Perpendicular style, and the bell-openings are paired with panel tracery

It is several of the cultivated varieties of beet (Beta vulgaris) grown for their edible taproots and their greens. These varieties have been classified as B. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris Conditiva Group.
Other than as a food, its uses include food coloring and as a medicinal plant. Many beet products are made from other Beta vulgaris varieties, particularly sugar beet.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXMHD - The parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is a root vegetable closely related to the carrot and parsley. It is a biennial plant usually grown as an annual. Its long tuberous root has cream-colored skin and flesh and can be left in the ground when mature as it becomes sweeter in flavor after winter frosts. In its first growing season, the plant has a rosette of pinnate, mid-green leaves. If unharvested, it produces its flowering stem, topped by an umbel of small yellow flowers, in its second growing season. By this time the stem is woody and the tuber inedible. The seeds are pale brown, flat and winged.
The parsnip is native to Eurasia. It has been used as a vegetable since antiquity and was cultivated by the Romans, although there is some confusion in the literature of the time between parsnips and carrots. It was used as a sweetener before the arrival in Europe of cane sugar. It was introduced into the United States in the nineteenth century.
The parsnip is usually cooked but can also be eaten raw. It is high in vitamins and minerals, especially potassium. It also contains antioxidants and both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. It can be cultivated in deep, stone-free soils and is attacked by the carrot fly and other insect pests, viruses and fungal diseases, of which canker is the most serious. In sunlight, handling the stems and foliage can cause a skin rash.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DGHEPE - Although there may be up to 100 species in the genus, only those native to the Northern hemisphere are commonly called Forget-me-not. Many are popular in gardens, preferring moist habitats. In areas where they are not native, they have frequently escaped to wetlands and riverbanks.
Myosotis sylvatica (wood forget-me-not)
Forget-me-nots may be annual or perennial plants. Their root systems are generally diffuse. Their seeds are found in small, tulip-shaped pods along the stem to the flower. The pods attach to clothing when brushed against and eventually fall off, leaving the small seed within the pod to germinate elsewhere. Seeds can be collected by putting a piece of paper under the stems and shaking the seed pods and some seeds will fall out.
It is possible that the genus originated in the Northern Hemisphere although it is equally possible that evolution occurred in New Zealand. One or two European species, especially the wood forget-me-not, Myosotis sylvatica have been introduced into most of the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Forget-me-nots are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the setaceous Hebrew character.
The Chatham Islands forget-me-not belongs to a related genus, Myosotidium.

The deep yellow flowers are produced in spring, in clusters of 10-30 blooms together on a single stem. Each flower is 915 mm broad. Red- and orange-flowered plants occur rarely but can be locally widespread in areas where coloured primula hybrids bloom at the same time as the native cowslip enabling cross-pollination.

The bands best known track, B-Sided with 'Take My Temperature', it documents a rowdy night out in their native Leeds, Yorkshire with members from the former band Black Wire. Professional Yorkshiremen, the track uses words like 'thee' to press the point home. Mention of chip fat (not oil) is also significant. A vegan friend of mine living in Yorkshire was always bemused to see chip shops proudly displaying signs like 'Everything fried in lard', or similar.
A friday or saturday night in Leeds can indeed become lairy when shell-suited folk ask for a pound for the buz or a condom. You are well advised to spot them at 50 paces and make good your escape! In fairness, not an experience exclusive to Yorkhire.
The track mentions John Smeaton ('an old Leodiensian'). He was a Civil Engineer, born in Austhorpe, Leeds 1724. Boris Johnson described the Kaisers as 'the weeds from Leeds' and compared the lyrics with that of 'White Riot' by The Clash.

Lizzie and Owen are both Appleton college students, this is part of Bridgewater High School, Warrington, England UK. On this saturday they garnered over 160 signatures, including mine. Lizzie told me that she received some very positive feedback from members of the public who could relate to the situation because they'd either been to university themselves or who had children either currently attending or wanting to in the future. One woman actually told me she went to University when it was free, but said she wouldn't now due to the amount of debt.
Some people who had seen her protesting decided to alert the police, exaggerating the situation, however the police turned out to be really supportive and encouraging! By all accounts the police are currently picking up lots of overtime due to these protests as the cutbacks will not allow deployment of additional officers.
Lizzie was clear where she thought the blame should be. 'I think what frustrates students the most is the role deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has played in the proposals. during his election campaign he made a ridiculous and highly ambitious claim that if his party won, he would make all University education free. considering the current climate, this proposal was never at all realistic, and i do agree that students should contribute some money towards their higher education. however, for Nick Clegg to have voted in favour of the raising of tuition fees shows he has completely gone against his word to the public and future students. what annoys me further is the fact that Vince Cable- a Lib Dem minister- who was responsible for drawing up the plans to increase fees by treble the amount threatened to abstain over the issue
being responsible for it he should have accepted the consequences for his actions'.
'if the legislation is passed as intended in 2012, then students in the UK will be paying more than any others in Europe. what the increase in fees represents is the Tories once again focussing on helping those at the top. it means that only those who can afford it will be able to go, who aren't necessarily always going to be the people who work the hardest and achieve the best results
it will make it a place of elitists once again. this coalition government is being governed solely by one party, with the Lib Dems cowardly giving in to everything asked of them. the strikes and protests led by the students were admirable, and while i don't condone the violence they were clearly provoked at times- members of the royal family being driven right through the centre of the protests. it is reported that Nick Clegg had to get the Tories to agree with some of his policies before he agreed to vote in favour of the increased tuition fees. it was called a compromise. but was it a compromise worth taking?!...... Definitely not!!!'
Interestingly, only English students will be shouldering these cuts, although MP's from right across the UK voted it in. Surely about time some form of devolved English parliament should be looked into....
With us only days before ushering in a new year, I think we might be seeing a bit more of this kind of thing!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4743397941 - 'The name Dandelion comes from 'dent de lion' apparently, French for lion's tooth referring to the teeth on the Leaves. Dandelion is native to Europe and Asia, but this yellow weed is naturalized in all temperate countries.
Its seeds are like little parachutes that fly away with the wind from 'clocks' such as this.
Some people remember as kids hearing about the rumour about dandelions. It is stated that if you smell or come in contact with a dandelion that you will pee the bed that night. Indeed in france this plant has the name 'pissenlit'
This idea is a myth of course. However, just like all tales, there is truth hidden within the fable. Dandelions may not be the cause of wetting the bed, but it is possible for it to be a factor.
This stems from the fact that the plant is a diuretic. A diuretic increases the amount of urine that is released by the body. However, in order for you to experience this diuretic property of the dandelion, you would have to do more than simply smelling or coming into contact with it. You would have to digest it.
So if you consume a certain quantity of dandelions before going to sleep and stay asleep through the night, you may awaken to find that your bed is now wet. This would then make dandelions a factor of the bed wetting, not the cause. Of course just extreme drunkeness can also cause bed wetting although this is obviously more an adult thing!
