Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG7X2 - Photograph showing the side of a Virgin Media O2 service van parked on a residential street in Warrington, Cheshire, North West England. The close-up composition shows the red Virgin Media logo and large blue O2 branding on the grey van body, with a blue Mini car, terraced houses, road markings, pavements and an overcast suburban streetscape visible in the background. The image is useful for editorial coverage of UK broadband, mobile telecoms, fibre network services, cable television, customer installations, home connectivity, broadband repairs, service engineers, utilities, infrastructure and consumer communications. Virgin Media and O2 combined in 2021 to form Virgin Media O2, bringing together fixed-line broadband, TV, landline and mobile services in the UK. Corporate information describes Virgin Media O2 as bringing together gigabit broadband and 5G services, while official company records list VMED O2 UK Limited at 500 Brook Drive, Reading. The photograph can illustrate contact between telecoms providers and households, especially where broadband reliability, installation appointments, customer service, streaming quality, mobile coverage, home working and internet speeds are part of public debate. The residential setting makes it relevant to stories about digital inclusion, connected homes, street-level infrastructure, engineer call-outs, broadband competition, telecoms regulation, consumer complaints, price rises, bundled packages and maintaining networks in towns such as Warrington. The damp road surface, soft grey light and cloudy sky suggest a cool, overcast day, typical of North West England. Strong search concepts include Virgin Media O2, Virgin Media, O2, broadband provider, mobile network, telecoms van, service van, cable broadband, fibre broadband, home internet, streaming services, customer service, network engineer, residential street, Warrington, Cheshire, North West England, UK connectivity, digital infrastructure and telecommunications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4C1D - A low level green lawn sign in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, asks dog owners to keep pets off private grass and to avoid dog fouling, with the words No poop and pee, be respectful around a red prohibition symbol. Photographed at ground level beside a neatly mown residential verge and kerb, the image captures a familiar everyday neighbourhood dispute over dog mess, pet urine damage, responsible ownership and respect for gardens, pavements and shared residential streets. The sign uses simple visual language, with a dog silhouette and crossed red circle, making the message clear for passers-by, dog walkers and residents without needing formal council wording. The scene has commercial and editorial relevance for stories about antisocial behaviour, environmental health, public realm maintenance, private lawns, estate management, tenancy conditions, neighbour tensions and the cost of keeping streets clean. Warrington Borough Council's dog control Public Space Protection Order gives the authority powers to act against irresponsible dog owners who fail to clean up after their dogs, and PSPO breaches can lead to a fixed penalty or court fine, making this small domestic sign part of a wider UK debate about local enforcement and civic responsibility. The cloudy sky and soft daylight suggest typical changeable North West England weather, while the suburban housing backdrop places the problem firmly in an ordinary residential setting rather than a park or tourist location. The photograph is useful for illustrating dog dirt complaints, pet etiquette, community standards, housing estate management, lawn care, urban cleanliness, local authority enforcement, street scene issues, public health risks, tenancy management, resident engagement, estate inspections, and tension between dog ownership and shared space in modern Britain. It can also support articles on how residents use signs to protect verges and communal green space when formal enforcement is difficult.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1HD - A bright pink Gumdrop chewing gum recycling bin is fixed to a post in Warrington town centre as part of efforts to tackle discarded gum, pavement staining and street litter. The sign invites people to dispose of used chewing gum in a dedicated Gumdrop container rather than leaving it on paving, walls, benches or public spaces. Warrington Borough Council's street cleaning guidance tells residents and visitors to put litter and chewing gum in the bin and reminds people that littering is a criminal offence. Gumdrop says its distinctive pink bins are designed specifically for waste chewing gum and that full Gumdrop bins are recycled together with their contents to make new Gumdrop bins, creating a closed-loop approach to a sticky and costly litter problem. The image is commercially useful for stories about town centre cleanliness, local authority environmental campaigns, anti-litter measures, street cleaning costs, recycling innovation, behavioural change, public realm management and the everyday challenge of keeping shopping streets, pavements and pedestrian areas clean. The vivid pink colour, recycling symbol, QR code, Gumdrop web address and clear GUM HERE message make the photograph instantly readable as a public information and waste prevention image. It can also illustrate wider debate about chewing gum litter, council budgets, civic pride, urban maintenance, high street decline, public behaviour, environmental education and the use of small, targeted design interventions to reduce nuisance waste. The Warrington setting gives the scene local editorial value, while the generic street background makes it suitable for broader UK stories about gum removal, litter enforcement, plastic alternatives, circular economy ideas and the visible infrastructure used to encourage better habits in busy town centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX2W - Directional signage for the Trans Pennine Trail photographed in the Latchford area of south Warrington, Cheshire, England. The blue wayfinding signs indicate west and east routes along the long-distance trail and display symbols for both cyclists and pedestrians, highlighting the shared-use nature of the path. The Trans Pennine Trail is a major national route stretching coast to coast across northern England, designed to promote walking, cycling, and sustainable travel through a mix of urban, suburban, and rural landscapes.
In towns such as Warrington, the trail forms part of local active-travel infrastructure, connecting residential neighbourhoods with green corridors, waterways, employment areas, and nearby towns. The signage reflects consistent national trail branding and supports navigation for leisure users as well as commuters. The image illustrates broader themes of sustainable transport, public investment in cycling and walking infrastructure, and the integration of long-distance recreational routes into everyday urban environments across contemporary Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNG0 - This image shows the exterior of Take a Bao, an independent street-food cafe located on Wilderspool Road in south Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA4 1QJ). The premises occupies a corner position in a red-brick building and features modern grey-and-white fascia signage displaying the business name and bao bun logo.
Take a Bao specialises in Asian-inspired street food, particularly bao buns, reflecting the growth of small independent food businesses outside traditional city-centre locations. Cafes and takeaway outlets such as this contribute to the changing character of suburban high streets, offering contemporary food options alongside long-established local services.
The clean, modern branding contrasts with the older brick architecture of the building, illustrating the layering of new businesses within historic urban fabric. The large windows and corner entrance give the venue strong street presence, typical of small hospitality enterprises seeking visibility and footfall in neighbourhood settings.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering independent food businesses, street food culture, suburban retail, local economies, and the evolution of high streets in towns such as Warrington.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3J77J - Documentary stock photograph shows a cast iron road drainage grid embossed JAS Bates & Sons and Winsford , with dark standing water visible below the slots and weathered blue-grey metal around the lettering. The image records a practical piece of highway drainage infrastructure, the kind of ordinary street asset that becomes vital during heavy rain, intense downpours and surface water flooding. Unlike a blocked drain image, this grate appears comparatively open, making it useful for illustrating the positive role of well-maintained gullies, road drains and stormwater channels in moving water away from roads, pavements, homes and businesses. The maker's name links the picture to Cheshire ironfounding heritage, local manufacturing, municipal supplies and the long tradition of casting utility covers for British streets. The National Archives catalogue includes James Bates & Sons, ironfounders of Winsford, Cheshire, while the CTVA Street Ironworks Archive records JAS Bates & Sons, ironfounders, Winsford. For image buyers, this is a strong visual for stories on flood prevention, drainage capacity, highways maintenance, council street services, climate adaptation, urban resilience, public infrastructure, asset management, road safety and local authority budgets. As climate change is associated with heavier bursts of rainfall in the UK, small drainage details such as gullies and cast iron grids are increasingly relevant to practical discussions about preparing streets for storms. The close crop, readable lettering, rust marks, wet shadowed openings and industrial texture give the image both heritage and environmental value. It could suit editorial articles, council reports, engineering features, insurance content, public works material, climate risk commentary and stock-photo use around drains, rainwater, flash flooding, surface water management, gully cleansing, highways assets and historic foundry products from Winsford, Cheshire.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3J79H - Close-up documentary stock photograph shows a choked cast iron street drain grid, its slots partly filled with fallen brown leaves, moss, soil and small weeds. The raised lettering on the metalwork reads Dudley & Dowell Ltd and Cradley Heath Staffs , identifying the manufacturer and linking the image to the long industrial history of Black Country foundries and public highway infrastructure. The photograph is useful for editorial use on blocked drains, local council cleansing, gully maintenance, street scene neglect, highways asset management, flood prevention and the everyday infrastructure that only becomes noticed when it fails. The grid appears to have gone uncleared for some time, with organic matter packed into the openings and green growth established around the edges. That visual detail makes the picture particularly relevant to stories about climate resilience, heavier rainfall, flash flooding, surface water drainage, urban runoff and the pressure on local authorities to maintain basic public assets under tight budgets. Cradley Heath, formerly in Staffordshire and now in the West Midlands, was a major centre of chain making, metalworking and iron foundry activity. Specialist manhole and utility cover records identify Dudley & Dowell as a British manufacturer whose covers were made in metal and found in rectangular, circular and square forms, with the firm moving to Cradley Heath in 1933 and later merging with the Brickhouse Group in 1967 to form Brickhouse Dudley. The worn casting, rust, leaf litter and moss give this image both an industrial heritage angle and a current public service angle. It could support features on drainage inspections, highways maintenance backlogs, council budgets, autumn leaf fall, neighbourhood environmental standards, storm overflows, water management, insurance claims, flood warnings, climate adaptation and the practical importance of keeping gullies and road drains clear before intense downpours.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBJ8BN - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP25 - Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival takes place in Lymm each year, and spreads good tidings and Christmas cheer!
When does the Lymm Dickensian Festival take place?
The Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival is an annual event, which has taken place for over a quarter of a century in Lymm Village. It is held on the second Saturday in December and is organised and run by the Lymm Dickensian Charity Committee.
Every year the Lymm community comes together with the support of the Lymm Parish Council to take the village back in time to a different era, when Dickens was alive, and where you might see Ebenezer Scrooge strolling through the streets. All of the community becomes involved, and Father Christmas himself takes time out of his busy pre Christmas schedule to attend the event.
There is a festival parade to entertain visitors, where you will see floats from local schools, vintage cars and horse-drawn carriages and of course Santa and his elves. Throughout the village there will be stalls selling local goods, and spreading Christmas cheer. Punch and Judy also take a turn to entertain, along with jugglers, street performers, musicians and Morris Dancers.
It's all in a good cause
All of the profits raised by the Lymm Dickensian Charity Committee each year are donated to a chosen charity.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4580364833 - 'Warrington town hall’s Grade II listed gates were last refurbished in 1978 and in February 2018, a passer-by spotted chunks falling from the ironwork.
A survey carried out before the English Half Marathon found parts of the gate were ‘alarmingly unstable’.
Contractors warned that although the structure was safe, the council would be taking a risk if runners were to start and end the race by passing through the town's Golden Gates.
The council has now hired engineering consultants Ramboll to apply for planning permission to remove the gates so repair work can be carried out at a secure location.
If the plans go ahead, the refurbishment should be completed in time for the Walking Day procession to pass through the Golden Gates next summer.
Work could cost in the region of £500,000.
Planning documents say it will take several months for the gates to be restored and temporary fencing will be put in place while the work is carried out.
According to the local newspaper, Warrington Borough Council Leader, Cllr Terry O’Neill, said: “The golden gates are an iconic symbol of Warrington and a hugely important part of our history and heritage.
“They are also part of the Grade I listed Town Hall site, which we have a duty to preserve. That’s why we want to take action now to protect their future.
“It’s important to remember that these gates are unique – there are no others like them in the world. Therefore, this will require very complex, technical works.”
About 10 of the floral decorations on the gates are broken and areas of decorative ironwork are also corroded.
The smaller pedestrian gates are also broken and cannot be opened.
Cllr O’Neill added: “This planning application is the next stage of this important project. If it is approved, we can move ahead with identifying a firm with the right expertise – who can provide value for money, and take a conservation-based approach that will ensure our gates remain a much-loved symbol of our civic pride for many years to come.”
The Golden Gates were built in 1862 and were destined to be a gift for Queen Victoria to be installed at Sandringham. But when she went to take a look at them, she was shocked to see a statue of Oliver Cromwell standing behind them and refused to accept the present.
Interesting factoid: Contrary to popular belief they have not removed the 4th angel. The winged figures represent Nike, goddess of Victory, actually a nod to Queen Victoria in 1895.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KET - The first public baths in the town opened on Church Street on 1 May 1851 The foundation stone for Legh Street Baths was laid in 1865 and they opened in 1866. They were originally privately owned by the Warrington Baths Company who went bankrupt. The council purchased them in 1873 and added two extra pools in 1912. This was commemorated in a foundation stone on Legh Street
The baths closed forever on 31 July 2003 and stood empty until the demolition company Anthony O'Connor & Sons Ltd from Salford moved in on Saturday 16 April 2011. They had a contract to clear the site in preparation for the construction of a new health centre. The baths consisted of four swimming pools, a steam room, laundry, and slipper baths for both ladies and men. The early boilers were typical ships' boilers (there were two of those) running on heavy oil. Phil recalls spending many a happy hour warming the oil line with a blowlamp in order to get the oil thin and warm enough before the boilers would fire up.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED8PR7 - On tapping or scanning their smartphone over the QR code or NFC tag to the right of the poster, a unique url will open in their phone's browser. If the campaign is mobile-platform enabled, this will lead straight to the advertiser's website or content
if not, they will be taken to a standard Clear Channel landing page. On a scroller or digital panel (where multiple advertisers are involved), on scanning or tapping, the consumer will be presented with a list of advertisers whose campaigns are mobile platform enabled for them to select from.
Near field communication (NFC) is a set of ideas and technologies that enable smartphones and other devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, typically a distance of 10 cm (3.9 in) or less. Each full NFC device can work in 3 modes: NFC target (acting like a credential), NFC initiator (as a reader) and NFC peer to peer. Most of the first business models like advertisement tags or other industrial applications have not been successful, always overtaken by another technology (3D barcodes, UHF tags, ...)
The main advantage of NFC is that NFC devices are often cloud connected. Connected credentials can be provisioned over the air unlike a standard card (Hotel or visitor applications). All connected NFC enabled smartphones can be provisioned with dedicated apps, which gives any application hundreds of millions of potential dedicated readers in opposition of the traditional dedicated infrastructure of ticket, access control or payment readers. All NFC peers can connect a third party NFC device with a server for any action or reconfiguration.

79 is the atomic number of the chemical element gold (Au).
SeventyNine is the smallest number that can't be represented as a sum of fewer than 19 fourth powers and a strictly non-palindromic number. The 22nd prime number (the next is 83).
The smallest prime number p for which the real quadratic field Q[√p] has class number greater than 1 (namely 3)
79 is an emirp, because the reverse of 79, 97, is also a prime
A fortunate prime and one that is also a Gaussian prime (since it is of the form 4n + 3). Also a happy, Higgs, sexy, lucky and permutable prime.
79 is a Pillai prime, because 23! + 1 is divisible by 79, but 79 is not one more than a multiple of 23.
Live Seventy Nine, is an album by hippy cosmic rockers Hawkwind.

Earlier this year it was revealed that they are the fastest-growing business on the High Street, constituting 16 per cent of new outlets in the past three years. There are now 30,000 in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF224F - Interior panorama of Cairo Street Chapel, Warrington, Cheshire UK.
Its in an unloved street near an old cabinet works building. On this day I passed the lights were on so I walked in. No tripod, so the panorama was hand held.
Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place .
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built.
Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham's Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.

Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4334926783 - 'Quite an unassuming place Warrington Museum, Cheshire seems, when looked at while being dragged around at high speed by a young child.
The museum is one of the oldest municipal museums in the UK and reflects something of the important local Victorians around at the time (1848), their interests and travels. It is a grade II listed building and houses fossils, Egyptian artefacts as well as relics of the old Warrington industries such as steel (particularly wire), clocks, textiles, brewing, tanning and chemicals are on display.
Since designation as new town, it is hard to see the old history beyond the shopping sites and new roads and buildings.
It can be regarded as a dormitory town for manchester or Liverpool and to wait on central station for the 08:13 sort of confirms that stereotype, particularly the stand in the corridor until Birchwood. Slightly shamefully hat was how I came to live in Warrington many years ago.
If you have time, spend a quarter of an hour in this little municipal jewel box. Slide out some fossil draws and check out how it used to be.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MWX - St Elphins Church Warrington Cheshire in the Borough Council WBC area, England North West UK United Kingdom . Close to Farrell street, College Close, A57, Salisbury St.
It is a Church Of England building . The church is dominated by its spire, 281 feet (86 m) high. It is the seventh highest in the country, the fifth highest parish church in the UK, after the St. Walburge's Church, Preston, St. James Church, Louth, St Mary Redcliffe, and St. Wulfram's Church, Grantham.
A place of worship has been present on the site since about 650 and the presence of a priest in Warrington was recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest fabric in the church is in the chancel and the crypt, which survive from the church built in 1354 by Sir William Boteler. The church was badly damaged by the Parliamentary forces in the Civil War. Following this the tower was rebuilt in 1696 and the nave in 1770. The south aisle was added in the early 19th century. Most of the fabric of the present church is the result of an extensive restoration between 1859 and 1867 by Frederick and Horace Francis. It was during this restoration that the spire was added. The bells were recast in 1698 and again in 1884. In 1950 they were recast again and the clock was replaced.
Within the church, St Ann's Chapel was founded by Thomas Massey, rector of Warrington from 1448 to 1464. It continued to belong to the Massey family until they died out in 1748. The chapel was then acquired by the Patten family who built a vault to bury members of the family, the last being Lord Winmarleigh in 1892. The Lady Chapel was founded and endowed by Sir John Boteler in 1290. He and other family members were buried in the chapel. In 1943 it became the chapel of the South Lancashire Regiment and in 1976 the chapel of The Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

The earliest known record of a place of worship around the site is in the year AD860.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool, England is situated on the junction of Hope Street and Hardman Street, diagonally opposite the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. It appears in numerous CAMRA guides.
I have always referred to as the Philharmonic Pub or simply the Phil. It was originally designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas for the brewers Robert Cain &
Company and opened in 1898. The exterior is in the Art Nouveau style.
The interior has dark wood-panelled walls with copper reliefs, Art Deco lighting and mosaic floor and bar. The main bar is highly decorated with glass grapes and a nearly life-sized golden eagle. As well as the main bar area, the pub also has the spacious Grande Lounge at the rear of the building, and two smaller drinking snugs named Brahms and Liszt. The Grande Lounge has just been restored to the way it was meant to be when the pub was first opened. The current dining room is located on the first floor.
The men's toilets are famous for their original, ornate marble urinals, Women are permitted to visit as part of organised tours. The building is a Grade II listed.
I had a few nice pints here a while ago when I spent a few years working at Littlewoods in Liverpool. I always try to drop in now whenever I have the chance :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3812467275 - 'A counciller at work in meeting room at Warrington Peace Centre, Cheshire UK.
On 20 March 1993, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) detonated two bombs in Warrington town centre. The blasts killed two children: three year old Jonathan Ball died instantly, and twelve year old Tim Parry died five days later in hospital. Around 56 other people were injured - 4 seriously. Their deaths provoked widespread condemnation of the organisation responsible. The blast followed a failed bomb attack a few weeks earlier on a gas storage plant in Warrington.
Tim Parry's father Colin Parry founded The Peace Centre (formerly the Tim Parry Jonathan Ball Peace Centre) as part of a campaign to reconcile communities in conflict. The centre opened on the seventh anniversary of the bombing in 2000.
He and his family still live in Warrington.

She is paid from 10am to 10pm, but often adds another 3-4 hours to that each day.
Commanding respect, she knits the shoestring winter night shelter together, finding silver linings in grey clouds. Without her the shelter would not exist.
She hopes next year the local borough council will fund a permanent night shelter.
Even if they do, she will most likely put as much effort.
