Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9348A - Roadside sign for Grappenhall Manor Care Home in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, showing Lovett branding, contact number and website details at the entrance to the care home. The image is useful for editorial coverage of adult social care, residential care, nursing care, dementia care, respite care, elderly accommodation, private care home operators, care home regulation, care quality, family care decisions and the growing role of larger care groups in England and Wales. Grappenhall Manor is listed by Lovett Care as a Warrington, Cheshire care home with the postcode WA4 2WA, while CQC and NHS records give the address as Stockport Road, Grappenhall, Warrington WA4 2WA. CQC records show the service as Grappenhall Manor Care Centre with an overall rating of Good, and care directory listings describe it as a 70-room home offering residential, nursing and dementia-related support. Lovett Care's own corporate information says the business has grown to 28 stock-photo/gotonysmith-Homes.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>homes across England and Wales, with further homes planned, making this sign relevant beyond a single local site as an image of care-sector consolidation, branding and provision across the wider UK social care market. The blue sign, clean typography, landscaped entrance, parked cars and suburban setting give the photograph a practical documentary feel suitable for news, local government, health and social care, property, planning, recruitment and care-home market analysis. It can illustrate stories about ageing populations, later-life housing, safeguarding, CQC inspection ratings, care home fees, workforce pressures, family choice, provider ownership, dementia support and the relationship between private operators, regulators and local communities. The image also has local value for Warrington, Grappenhall and Cheshire coverage, particularly where a clear exterior sign is needed to identify the home without photographing residents or private care activity. It is a straightforward stock image for articles

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9AN46 - Winter view of St Wilfrid's stock-photo/gotonysmith-Churchyard.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Churchyard in Grappenhall, Warrington, showing a frosted old gravestone standing in snow with the red sandstone church tower rising behind it. The image captures a quiet historic Cheshire village churchyard in cold weather, with carved memorial stones, snow-covered ground, the church building, tower battlements and pale blue winter sky combining to create a reflective documentary scene. St Wilfrid's is the parish church of Grappenhall and is recognised as a Grade I listed building, making it an important heritage landmark as well as an active place of worship. The National Churches Trust says St Wilfrid's has served its community for more than 900 years, giving the site strong value for editorial use around village history, local identity, ecclesiastical architecture, churchyards, genealogy, ancestry research, historic burial grounds and religious heritage. The old headstone in the foreground adds human scale and family-history interest, while the snowy setting gives the photograph a seasonal atmosphere suitable for winter travel, heritage features, church conservation, weather stories and reflective articles about memory, mortality and continuity. The churchyard itself remains active and open, according to the parish's own churchyard information, with access through the church gate and courtyard by the tower. The image is useful for coverage of Cheshire villages, Warrington heritage, English parish churches, Grade I listed buildings, red sandstone architecture, medieval church settings, historic gravestones and the visual character of old churchyards in snow. It can also support stock uses relating to remembrance, cemetery records, local history walks, winter landscapes, rural and suburban heritage, church tourism and the enduring role of parish churches in community life. The low viewpoint and strong vertical tower make the composition dramatic, while the foreground gravestone gives the scene emotional and historical depth.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BFC - Greenall's Brewery was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762. Initially based in St Helens, the company established a second brewery at Wilderspool, south of Warrington in 1787.
It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold
Greenall's ales are distributed by Carlsberg and brewed for them by Molson Coors in Burtonwood, near Warrington. Greenall's ales can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although they are gradually disappearing (thank God!). Often, only Greenall's Mild can be found. Greenall's Bitter is 3.6% ABV. Greenall's Mild is 3.1%

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3J76T - History of St Thomas's Stockton Heath
On the south wall between two windows is a three quarter length tiled figure of St Thomas, the patron saint of our church. Known sometimes as ˜Doubting Thomas', the fact that most people know about him is that he asked to see proof of Jesus' death and resurrection. He was later a missionary, spreading the Christian message to many parts of the world including India. He is regarded by Indian Christians as the patron saint of India and is also the patron saint of architects, builders and stonemasons. Thomas was martyred at Myalapore, Chennai “ the spear in his hand in the picture is a symbol of his martyrdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3J77B - Ddocumentary stock photograph shows a red Royal Mail postal delivery van parked in a terraced residential street in Stockton Heath, South Warrington, Cheshire. The image captures the familiar Royal Mail livery on a small delivery vehicle beside brick terraced houses, front doors, pavement kerbs and a visible estate agent sold board, making it useful for editorial features on post, parcels, doorstep delivery, neighbourhood services, housing streets and everyday public service infrastructure. It also has strong current relevance for stories about Royal Mail ownership, postal reform, delivery performance and public concern about worsening service standards. Royal Mail's parent company, International Distribution Services, was taken over by EP Group, controlled by Czech billionaire Daniel KÅ™etÃnský, after a £3.6 billion deal that completed in 2025. The change brought renewed scrutiny of the future of the universal postal service, letter deliveries, parcel prioritisation and the balance between public service obligations and commercial logistics. Ofcom has repeatedly reported that Royal Mail missed key quality of service targets, including first class and second class delivery standards, and in 2026 opened a further investigation after first class delivery performance again fell below the regulatory target. The House of Commons Library has also summarised Royal Mail's poor recent performance against Ofcom targets, including first class mail delivered next working day and second class mail delivered within three working days. This local street scene can therefore illustrate wider national themes: delayed post, changes to delivery models, privatisation, foreign ownership, last-mile logistics, post for older or digitally excluded residents, small parcels from online shopping, regulated utilities, consumer frustration and the future of letter delivery. The overcast daylight, ordinary terraced housing and parked van give the picture a plain, credible editorial quality rathe

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JD0MFP - Lymm and Thelwall to be moved from Warrington South to Tatton electoral ward
Lymm and Thelwall look set to become part of the Tatton constituency under a shakeup of England's electoral map.
The Boundary Commission for England has revealed a raft of proposed changes across the country, with just under 10 per cent of existing constituencies remaining unchanged.
In Warrington, the most drastic changes can be found in Warrington South “ which will lose Lymm and Thelwall to Tatton, currently held by Tory MP Esther McVey.
Warrington North is almost entirely unchanged, save for minor changes which will see the Westbrook Centre moved to Warrington South and part of Chetham Court at Winwick Quay “ home to businesses including Tenpin Warrington, formerly LA Bowl “ switched in the opposite direction.
Proposals are due to be implemented in 2023, and aim to ensure that each constituency has roughly the same number of voters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JB87A1 - St Oswald's Church, is in the village of Winwick, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Winwick.
History
A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580. Much damage was done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank. The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847“49 for the 13th Earl of Derby. The spire was rebuilt and the church was restored in 1869 by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. On Thursday 13 January 1887, Titanic Captain Edward Smith married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in the church. In 1931“32 Henry Paley successor in the Lancaster architectural practice, now known as Austin and Paley, restored the tower at a cost of £463, and in 1934 he added a new vestry, porch and entrance at a cost of £232
The church is built of sandstone with a metal, stainless steel, roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a nave of six bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chapel in the east bay of each aisle, a chancel and sanctuary of three bays, and a north vestry. The south chapel is the Legh Chapel and the north chapel belonged to the Gerard family. The tower is in three stages and has a recessed spire. On the west face is a door above which is a three-light window.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP25 - Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival takes place in Lymm each year, and spreads good tidings and Christmas cheer!
When does the Lymm Dickensian Festival take place?
The Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival is an annual event, which has taken place for over a quarter of a century in Lymm Village. It is held on the second Saturday in December and is organised and run by the Lymm Dickensian Charity Committee.
Every year the Lymm community comes together with the support of the Lymm Parish Council to take the village back in time to a different era, when Dickens was alive, and where you might see Ebenezer Scrooge strolling through the streets. All of the community becomes involved, and Father Christmas himself takes time out of his busy pre Christmas schedule to attend the event.
There is a festival parade to entertain visitors, where you will see floats from local schools, vintage cars and horse-drawn carriages and of course Santa and his elves. Throughout the village there will be stalls selling local goods, and spreading Christmas cheer. Punch and Judy also take a turn to entertain, along with jugglers, street performers, musicians and Morris Dancers.
It's all in a good cause
All of the profits raised by the Lymm Dickensian Charity Committee each year are donated to a chosen charity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF4J - Terracotta, terra cotta or terra-cotta
Italian: baked earth, from the Latin terra cocta), a type of earthenware, is a clay-based unglazed or glazed ceramic, where the fired body is porous. Terracotta is the term normally used for sculpture made in earthenware, and also for various practical uses including vessels (notably flower pots), water and waste water pipes, roofing tiles, bricks, and surface embellishment in building construction. The term is also used to refer to the natural brownish orange color of most terracotta, which varies considerably.
This article covers the senses of terracotta as a medium in sculpture, as in the Terracotta Army and Greek terracotta figurines, and architectural decoration. Asian and European sculpture in porcelain is not covered. Glazed architectural terracotta and its unglazed version as exterior surfaces for buildings were used in Asia for some centuries before becoming popular in the West in the 19th century. Architectural terracotta can also refer to decorated ceramic elements such as antefixes and revetments, which made a large contribution to the appearance of temples and other buildings in the classical architecture of Europe, as well as in the Ancient Near East.
In archaeology and art history, terracotta is often used to describe objects such as figurines not made on a potter's wheel. Vessels and other objects that are or might be made on a wheel from the same material are called earthenware pottery
the choice of term depends on the type of object rather than the material or firing technique. Unglazed pieces, and those made for building construction and industry, are also more likely to be referred to as terracotta, whereas tableware and other vessels are called earthenware (though sometimes terracotta if unglazed), or by a more precise term such as faience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KET - The first public baths in the town opened on Church Street on 1 May 1851 The foundation stone for Legh Street Baths was laid in 1865 and they opened in 1866. They were originally privately owned by the Warrington Baths Company who went bankrupt. The council purchased them in 1873 and added two extra pools in 1912. This was commemorated in a foundation stone on Legh Street
The baths closed forever on 31 July 2003 and stood empty until the demolition company Anthony O'Connor & Sons Ltd from Salford moved in on Saturday 16 April 2011. They had a contract to clear the site in preparation for the construction of a new health centre. The baths consisted of four swimming pools, a steam room, laundry, and slipper baths for both ladies and men. The early boilers were typical ships' boilers (there were two of those) running on heavy oil. Phil recalls spending many a happy hour warming the oil line with a blowlamp in order to get the oil thin and warm enough before the boilers would fire up.

Seventeen is the 7th prime number. The next prime is nineteen, with which it forms a twin prime. 17 is the sum of the first four primes. 17 is the sixth Mersenne prime exponent, yielding 131071. 17 is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part and real part of the form 3n \u2212 1.
17 is the third Fermat prime, as it is of the form 24 + 1, and it is also a Proth prime. Since 17 is a Fermat prime, regular heptadecagons can be constructed with compass and unmarked ruler. This was proven by Carl Friedrich Gauss. Another consequence of 17 being a Fermat prime is that it is not a Higgs prime for squares or cubes
in fact, it is the smallest prime not to be a Higgs prime for squares, and the smallest not to be a Higgs prime for cubes.
17 is the only positive Genocchi number that is prime, the only negative one being \u22123. It is also the third Stern prime.
As 17 is the least prime factor of the first twelve terms of the Euclid\u2013Mullin sequence, it is the thirteenth term.
Seventeen is the aliquot sum of two numbers, the odd discrete semiprimes 39 and 55 is the base of the 17-aliquot tree.
In the United Kingdom, 17 is the minimum driving age for a car or van. An amazing Potterfactiod, In the Harry Potter universe, 17 is the coming of age for wizards. It is equivalent to the usual coming of age at 18. 17 is the number of Sickles in one Galleon in the British wizards' currency. Take that one to the pub quiz.

Twenty-two is a pentagonal number and a centered heptagonal number. When cutting a circle with just six line segments, the maximum number of pieces that can be so created is 22, thus 22 is a central polygonal number.
Its the atomic number of titanium. There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet, 22 chapters of the Revelation of John in the Bible. In the Kabbalah, there are 22 paths between the sephiroth.
Psalm 22 (22nd in the Book of Psalm in the King James Bible), described by the New American Standard Bible as the 'A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise', is the Psalm to which the crucified and dying Jesus makes reference, citing its first verse in Aramaic (Matthew 27:46
Mark 15:34). There are 22 verses in Surah 'Al Burooj'(The Zodiac, or Constellations), in the Quran. Linking the Zodiac and the mystery of the number 22, as found in the Major Arcana.

Catch-22 is a satirical and historical novel by the American author Joseph Heller. He began writing it in 1953, and the novel was first published in 1961. It is set during World War II in 1943 and is frequently cited as one of the great literary works of the twentieth century. It uses a distinctive non-chronological third person omniscient narration, describing events from different characters' points of view and out of sequence so that the time line develops along with the plot.
The novel follows Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier. Most of the events in the book occur while the fictional 256th squadron is based on the island of Pianosa, in the Mediterranean Sea west of Italy. The novel looks into the experiences of Yossarian and the other airmen in the camp, and their attempts to keep their sanity in order to fulfill their service requirements, so that they can return home. The phrase 'Catch-22', 'a problematic situation for which the only solution is denied by a circumstance inherent in the problem or by a rule,' has entered the English language.

I found this a very interesting book and this lady very interesting as she told me she worked in the local Job Centre.
In David Cameroons 'Big Society' we will need to get our heads around the 'Non-Cash Reward'. There certainly will be limited or zero funds to support services that used to cost money.
The policy certainly has its critics. Labour leader Ed Miliband in February 2011 said Mr Cameron was undermining his own Big Society concept through spending cuts.
Various charity figures have suggested that the scale of local authority cuts could kill off the idea before it gets going - by 'destroying' existing voluntary groups.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu warned at one of his Sunday sermons, that investment in public services was needed if the Big Society was to succeed.
Norman Smith, BBC Radio4 had this comment:
The difficulty, it seems, he faces in getting his Big Society message over is that voters have rather more pressing matters on their mind.
After all, at a time of job losses, pay freezes, pension hikes and public service cuts - people may take the view that creating the Big Society is not very high on their list of priorities.
Somehow Mr Cameron has to convince voters it matters as much to them as it clearly does to him.
Merseyside television producer Phil Redmond has already attacked the 'big society' idea, saying it has been 'undermined by public spending cuts'.
The Brookside and Hollyoaks creator had originally been a fan of the concept, taking charge of a project involving volunteering and cultural activities in Liverpool.
He said: 'I do remain a strong supporter of the principle behind big society, because it wasn't too long ago that the media was full of stories about Big Brother, too much red tape, surveillance society, we need to get engaged with society and so on.
'It just came at the wrong moment.'
He said there was a need to make sure there was a separation between the big society plans and the cuts.

What an interesting book this chap had as he left the library. His face could be that of modern Britain. Getting older, we expect to have more over 60's soon than ever before, we also probably will be expected to work longer for smaller pensions on the whole.
In Britain we should be the best europeans of all, we have had everyone through here, at some point or another. Romans, Vikings, Normans etc. This book is the story of who we are and where we are from - the history of Britain through war and conquest, migration and racial integration.
The Welcome Trust has given a GBP2million grant to Oxford geneticist Sir Walter Bodmer to take DNA samples from hundreds of volunteers throughout Britain and find tell-tale fragments of DNA that reveal the biological traces of successive waves of colonisers - Celts, Saxons, Vikings, etc. - in various parts of Britain. These traces in part determine our facial features. In effect, this project will produce a genetic map of our islands revealing where today's Cornish or East Anglians originally came from.
The project is unique in that it uses cutting edge technology to question our accepted notions of our history. Added to this, the series and the book will meld science, history and personal stories to investigate our linguistic history, our surnames and placenames and compare findings with the results of the Bodmer study.Face of Britain will be a launch pad to explore Britain's earliest history while investigating why we look the way we do.

Libraries can be a great place to lose yourself. Perhaps in a distant place or at a crimescene. Maybe a murder, or even commit one.
I am alway surprised at the fiction reading matter that the most unlikely people enjoy. With the choice on offer, you can easily spend a few decades reading one section of your local library, for free. Alternatively, flurt about around genres.
Lynda La Plante, CBE (actually born Lynda J. Titchmarsh on 15 March 1943) is an English author, screenwriter and former actress, best known for writing the Prime Suspect television crime series.
La Plante's father was a salesman in Liverpool. She attended RADA and began her career as an actress, mainly on television. As Lynda Marchal, she appeared in several popular series including Z-Cars, The Sweeney, The Professionals and Bergerac. However as an actress she is perhaps best remembered as the hay-fever suffering ghost Tamara Novek in the BBC children's series Rentaghost.
She formed her own television production company, La Plante Productions, in 1994 and as La Plante Productions she wrote and produced the sequel to Widows, the equally gutsy She's Out (ITV, 1995).
The name 'La Plante' comes from her marriage to writer Richard La Plante, author of the book Mantis and Hog Fever. La Plante divorced Lynda in the early 1990s.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4827403611 - 'At the centre of the town of Warrington, Cheshire, lies the Holy Trinity Church. Generally the postal centre of a town was its principle church or market square. The Georgian style church is a Grade II listed building.
A chapel of ease known as Trinity Chapel was built on the site in 1708 to relieve pressure on the parish church of St Elphin's. It was built as an oratory by Peter Legh of Lyme Park. By the 1750s the chapel was too small for its congregation and in 1758 subscriptions were raised to build a new church, which was consecrated in 1760.
The architecture is in the style of James Gibbs, but he was ill at the time the church was built and it is thought it was designed by one of Gibbs' associates. In 1862 a west clock tower was added which was designed by W. P. Coxon, the Borough Surveyor
the tower belongs to the town rather than to the church.
In 1974 the south aisle was re-designed to form the Garven Room, a servery, a vestry and toilets. By the 1970s the roof had been damaged by wet and dry rot, woodworm and death watch beetle and was replaced in 1978\u201379. By 1990 the pipe organ was beyond repair and it has been replaced by a Makin electronic organ.
In 1988 the west end was remodelled, forming a lobby. In 1997 the east end was reordered, adding a room and extending the sanctuary area. In 1999 the clock was refurbished by Warrington Borough Council as a Millennium project.
I had gone into town to join the Scott Kelby photowalk but was a bit late. I had a walk around anyway, although did not spot anyone else obviously wandering around with a camera.

The man responsible for the founding of the Church was Robert Yates, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he ultimately obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration and the congregation worshipped in Eccleston Barn.
The Toleration Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street, (the same site as is now Cairo Street). A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place .
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built. Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel. In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired
the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does today.

Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham's Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.

The latter was the location of Latchford station (Cheshire Lines), then Cantilever garden centre and now Cantilever Mansions, a collection of modern flats.
Here, the wet iron girders on the bridge is picking tp the low setting sun, in a nice golden yellow.
The bridge can remain in situ for all but the tallest ships and generally is used as a rat run when other hydraulic powered road bridges are opened.
In the area are Cantiliver Park (home to Warrington Town football club, eclipsed by the mighty Wires Rugby club) and the excellent Canteliver chippy (who will do Pea-wet if asked nicely).
The book 'History of the Manchester Ship Canal from Its Inception to Its Completion' records it as having a weight in steel of 783 tons. Also its centre span is recorded as 206 feet. In contrast the swing bridges at Knutsford and Northwich roads is only 120 feet.
Below the bridge was the old Beers timber yard. This is now being dissasembled.

Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghosts www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4103283717/ , as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.
The church of England All Saints Church is just further north of the pub www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3691489296/
A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEXEHD - Bridgewater canal Lymm Village moorings, Warrington Cheshire, England, UK at Dusk
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre.
The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook, the Rochdale Canal in Manchester, the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn, and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Often considered to be the first true canal, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building, known as canal mania.
It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool, England is situated on the junction of Hope Street and Hardman Street, diagonally opposite the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. It appears in numerous CAMRA guides.
I have always referred to as the Philharmonic Pub or simply the Phil. It was originally designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas for the brewers Robert Cain &
Company and opened in 1898. The exterior is in the Art Nouveau style.
The interior has dark wood-panelled walls with copper reliefs, Art Deco lighting and mosaic floor and bar. The main bar is highly decorated with glass grapes and a nearly life-sized golden eagle. As well as the main bar area, the pub also has the spacious Grande Lounge at the rear of the building, and two smaller drinking snugs named Brahms and Liszt. The Grande Lounge has just been restored to the way it was meant to be when the pub was first opened. The current dining room is located on the first floor.
The men's toilets are famous for their original, ornate marble urinals, Women are permitted to visit as part of organised tours. The building is a Grade II listed.
I had a few nice pints here a while ago when I spent a few years working at Littlewoods in Liverpool. I always try to drop in now whenever I have the chance :-)

The different lighting temperatures have unintentionally given me the colours of the Wires, blue and yellow.
This beautiful building is grade I listed and is said to have had an entry in the Doomsday book. The north arcade is from the 13th century and is thought to be the oldest surviving part of the building.
Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the nearby Battle of Red Bank. Some damage invariably resulted. The lovely Legh Chapel has a 16th century panelled roof. In there is a brass plaque to Sir Peter Legh dated 1527. Also in the chapel are monuments to other members of the prominent Legh family, including one to Mrs Ellen Legh who died in 1831.
The tower contains of six bells (although I have yet to get into the tower). Five of these were cast (from the 4 existing bells) in 1711 by Richard Sanders and the sixth in 1882 is by John Taylor &
Co. If you have chance to have a good look around inside it is well worth it.

Unfortunately the old 'Mr Smiths' has now seen better days. Closed now in its last incarnation as Halo, most people might remember it as the start point of the TV show 'Hitman and Her'.
It was a British television dance music show hosted by (record producer &
keen keen railway enthusiast) Pete Waterman and (Vegetarian Childrens TV star) Michaela Strachan. It ran almost continuously for over four years and three months September 1988 until December 1992.
Mr Smiths was quite a good club, visible from anyone crossing Bridge St into town. Tuesdays was usually a lively night. It was pound a pint in town and all Chinese takeaways were closed that night, hence in Mr Smiths it was often referred to as 'Triad Night', due to all young Chinese things partying.
If you have a memory of the old Mr Smiths, please leave a comment.
One comment I spotted on a blog was this:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDRMC5 - Royal Air Force Burtonwood (or RAF Burtonwood) is a former Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces base that was located in Burtonwood, 2 miles (3.2 km) Northwest of Warrington in Cheshire, England. The base was opened in 1940 in response to World War II by the RAF and in 1942 it was transferred to the United States of America for war operations. The base was home to 18,000 American servicemen at the end of the war. In 1946 the base was transferred back to the United Kingdom however United States operations continued. The base officially closed in 1991 and since then the runway and most of the associated buildings have been demolished. RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre was opened on part of the former base
Burtonwood airfield was opened on 1 January 1940 as a servicing and storage centre for modifying British aircraft. It was operated by No. 37 Maintenance Unit RAF until June 1942
The facility was transferred to the United States Army Air Forces in June 1942 to become a servicing centre for the United States Eighth, Ninth, Twelfth and Fifteenth Air Forces aircraft. Burtonwood was also known as Base Air Depot 1 (BAD 1)
When the Cold War ended, Burtonwood Army Depot was declared excess to NATO requirements and was closed in June 1994
In the Heritage centre, planes exhibited are the B-17 Flying Fortress, P-47 Thunderbolt and the B-29 Super Fortress. There is also a selection of Pratt & Whitney Wasp series engines

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BJB - Greenall's Brewery was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762.

Intended as a short-term solution to a shortage of rolling stock (with a lifespan of no more than 20 years), as of 2018 many Pacer railbuses are still in use.
The Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations require that all public passenger trains must be accessible to disabled people by 2020. Only one Pacer (the modernised 144e) currently meets this requirement, and the remainder will therefore need to be withdrawn by that date unless they receive an extensive refurbishment. Porterbrook, which owns the Class 143 and Class 144 fleets, has proposed such a refurbishment for the rest of the fleet, while Angel Trains, which owns the Class 142 fleet, does not see such a refurbishment as a viable option
