Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJ11R9 - Rembrandt, also known as Rem Bar, on the corner of Canal Street and Sackville Street in Manchester's Gay Village, photographed during warm summer weather with busy pavement seating, people queuing at the entrance, rainbow flags, bunting and relaxed outdoor hospitality. The scene captures one of the long-established venues in the city's queer quarter, with the pub and hotel overlooking the lively streets around Sackville Gardens. The Rembrandt's own website gives its location as 33 Sackville Street, M1 3LZ, and describes it as a community pub in the heart of the Gay Village, while Visit Manchester and other listings also place it at the same address. The image is useful for editorial coverage of LGBTQ+ tourism, Pride weekends, inclusive travel, European short breaks, hospitality spending, nightlife, pub culture, city-centre regeneration, visitor economy and the commercial importance sometimes described as the pink pound. The wide crop shows the relationship between the bar frontage, public street, outdoor tables, passing pedestrians, nearby trees and surrounding red-brick city architecture, making it suitable for features on Manchester as a destination for gay, queer and LGBTQ+ travellers as well as friends, couples, locals and tourists enjoying a weekend city break. Manchester's Gay Village has major cultural significance in UK LGBTQ+ history, with venues such as the Rembrandt, New Union and Canal Street bars providing social spaces, entertainment and visibility over many decades. The photograph appears to have been taken in bright daylight under blue sky, with summer clothing, leafy trees and busy open-air seating suggesting warm-weather leisure. It can illustrate Pride season, inclusive nightlife, urban tourism, bar terraces, drag and cabaret culture, safe social spaces, hospitality recovery, tourism marketing, city branding and the continuing draw of Canal Street as one of Britain's best-known queer districts

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0GB - Vertical-format street photograph of an inclusive crowded outdoor terrace at Velvet on Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village, with drinkers, couples and friends sitting close together at tables filled with pints, wine glasses, cocktails, soft drinks and an orange ice bucket. The portrait frame emphasises the packed pavement, red-brick bar frontages, dark parasols, hanging plants and the flow of people moving between the bars. Velvet's signage is visible on the right, placing the scene at one of Canal Street's established hospitality venues. Green trees, bare shoulders, short sleeves, sunglasses and bright outdoor light suggest warm spring or summer weather, although the sky is mostly hidden by buildings and foliage.
The scene is useful because it shows Manchester's queer quarter as a lived social place rather than only a night-time destination. Canal Street is famous for LGBTQ+ nightlife, Pride culture, drag, hotels, restaurants and late licensing, but this picture captures its daytime and early-evening character: visitors on a city break, friends meeting after work, couples sharing drinks, tourists walking through, and hospitality spilling into the public realm. The tables are busy but relaxed, with people facing one another, chatting and watching the street, giving the photograph a strong sense of sociable urban leisure.
Velvet is listed at 2 Canal Street, while Visit Manchester promotes Canal Street and the Gay Village as a major visitor area in the city. This has strong editorial and commercial stock value for features on LGBTQ+ tourism, inclusive city breaks, outdoor hospitality, Manchester Pride, the night-time economy, queer visibility, pavement drinking, canalside regeneration, visitor spending and the changing use of city-centre streets. It can also support stories about safe public spaces, bar culture, tourism pressure and how famous nightlife districts operate as daytime social landmarks as well as after-dark entertainment zones.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0J3 - Warm spring street scene on Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village, looking along the bar frontage beside the Rochdale Canal. People walk through the city's best-known LGBTQ+ quarter while others sit at outdoor tables under parasols, with Bar Pop signage visible on the right and rainbow-coloured bunting strung above the trees. Fresh green leaves, short sleeves, sunglasses, bright pavement light and busy outdoor seating give the photograph a late spring or early summer feel. The sky is mostly hidden by trees and flags, but the clothing and open-air drinking suggest mild, sunny weather.
This is a useful editorial view of Canal Street as both a tourist destination and a community space. The area is strongly associated with LGBTQ+ nightlife, drag performance, Pride celebrations, bars, clubs, restaurants and late-night hospitality, but this picture also shows its daytime character: friends, couples, visitors and families moving through a public street that has become part of Manchester's civic identity. The rainbow decorations and crowded pavement underline themes of queer visibility, inclusive leisure, urban tourism and safe social space, while the red-brick buildings, trees, lampposts, tables and bar signs keep the image grounded in the working city.
The scene also has wider use beyond travel and nightlife. It can illustrate stories on Manchester's visitor economy, outdoor hospitality, Pride culture, equality and diversity, public realm design, city-centre regeneration and visible LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods. Canal Street is promoted as the heart of the Gay Village, but it is also a changing urban place where tourism, development, safety, late licensing, community memory and queer identity meet in a compact canalside street. The photograph captures that mix well: celebratory and ordinary at the same time, with sunshine, flags, beer-garden tables and pedestrians showing how a famous nightlife district also works as a daytime social landmark.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CKYR4K - A rear view of a Police Liaison Officer wearing a high-visibility vest marked Police Liaison Officer while overseeing crowd movement during Notting Hill Carnival in West London. The image was taken in late summer, with strong daylight, blue sky and dry conditions typical of August weather in London.
In the background, large crowds of carnival-goers, event stewards and vehicles are visible, illustrating the scale and complexity of managing one of Europe's largest street festivals. Police liaison officers are deployed to act as a bridge between the police, event organisers and the public, focusing on communication, reassurance and de-escalation rather than enforcement.
Notting Hill Carnival is a major cultural event celebrating Caribbean heritage and London's diversity, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Images such as this are commonly used editorially to illustrate themes of public order, community policing, major event management, urban safety and multicultural life in the UK capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EM2JMF - Summer drinkers, tourists and local customers gathered outside The Dame Tavern on Dame Court in Dublin 2, a short pedestrian lane close to Dame Street, Temple Bar, Dublin Castle, City Hall and the south city centre nightlife area. The photograph captures the bright red pub frontage, striped outdoor umbrellas, standing groups, passing pedestrians and warm sunlight falling across the narrow street, giving a lively impression of Dublin's outdoor hospitality culture during a busy fine-weather day. The Dame Tavern is a compact city-centre bar at 18 Dame Court, known as a snug and popular pub serving Guinness, drinks and music in a location that attracts office workers, shoppers, theatre-goers, weekend visitors and European city-break tourists. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Irish pubs, Dublin tourism, short breaks, hospitality, licensed premises, socialising, summer leisure, pub culture, nightlife, consumer spending, city-centre footfall and the visitor economy. The visible building signage, crowd behaviour and central location make it suitable for features about relaxed outdoor drinking, pedestrian-friendly streets, pub-led regeneration, independent bars, tourism pressure, licensing, hospitality staffing, weekend travel and the continuing appeal of traditional Irish pubs as informal public meeting places. It also works for stories about EU city breaks, low-cost flights, Dublin hotel stays, pub crawls, food and drink tourism, social life after work, young adult leisure and the balance between residents, visitors and late-night venues in compact historic streets. The scene appears to be photographed in strong summer daylight, with blue sky brightness reflected on facades and people wearing light warm-weather clothing. No individual is the main subject, so the emphasis remains on place, atmosphere, tourism, urban leisure and the everyday street-level economy around one of Dublin's best-known central pub clusters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T3EFRX - This plain-speaking location image records British Gas Maintenance diesel service Van - Keeping bathtime flowing, in Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4 2LN. The row metadata places the subject at 29 Knutsford Rd, Grappenhall, Warrington ,WA4 2LN. The spreadsheet date indicates 18 October 2023, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows Warrington, Knutsford Road, logo, Keeping bathtime flowing, maintenance, heating, plumbing, central heating, with search-relevant terms including Warrington, Knutsford Road, logo, Keeping bathtime flowing, maintenance, heating, plumbing, central heating, diesel, callout, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4 2LN. The value lies in the combination of place, object, wording and context, giving editors something specific and grounded rather than generic filler imagery. Warrington sits between Liverpool and Manchester and is often used as a practical example of a North West town balancing commuter growth, older industrial roots, retail change, new development, road traffic, local services and community identity. It is suited to health, household and public-service coverage, linking personal need with wider systems such as the NHS, prescriptions, energy efficiency, heating costs, fuel poverty, domestic comfort and the policy pressures faced by ordinary households. Because it is grounded in a named location and practical subject matter, it is useful for search-led editorial use, regional storytelling, business-to-business presentations, policy briefings and stock-photo buyers wanting evidence from the real world. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX180N - A terrace or terraced house (UK) or townhouse (US) is an architectural term for a form of medium-density housing that first started in 16th century Europe with a row of joined houses sharing side walls. In the United States and Canada these are known as row houses or row homes, commonly found in older cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Toronto.
Terrace housing can be found worldwide, though it is quite common in Europe and Latin America, and many examples can be found in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Australia.
Since the Second World War, housing redevelopment has led to many outdated or dilapidated terraces being cleared to make room for tower blocks, which occupy a much smaller area of land. Because of this land use in the inner city areas could in theory have been used to create greater accessibility, employment or recreational or leisure centres. However, sub-optimal or flawed implementation has meant that in many areas (like Manchester or the London estates) the tower blocks offered no real improvement for rehoused residents over their prior terraced houses.
In 2005 the English Heritage report Low Demand Housing and the Historic Environment found that repairing a standard Victorian terraced house over 30 years is around 60% cheaper than building and maintaining a newly built house. In a 2003 survey for Heritage Counts a team of experts contrasted a Victorian terrace with a house built after 1980, and found that:
The research demonstrated that, contrary to earlier thinking, older housing actually costs less to maintain and occupy over the long-term life of the dwelling than more modern housing. Largely due to the quality and life-span of the materials used, the Victorian terraced house proved almost £1,000 per 100 m2 cheaper to maintain and inhabit on average each year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2424 - This image shows a freshly prepared cappuccino served in a ceramic cup and saucer, accompanied by a teaspoon and placed on a wooden table. The coffee is topped with a layer of foamed milk lightly dusted with cocoa or chocolate powder, giving it a warm and inviting appearance.
The neutral-toned crockery and natural wood surface suggest a relaxed community café environment, typical of independent or socially focused cafés that emphasise ethical sourcing and fair-trade coffee. The close-up composition highlights the texture of the foam and the warmth of the drink, creating a comforting, everyday café scene.
Cappuccino is a popular espresso-based drink enjoyed throughout the UK, commonly associated with informal socialising, coffee breaks, and community spaces. Images like this are often used to illustrate themes of local café culture, ethical consumption, and simple pleasures in daily life.
The photograph works well for editorial, lifestyle, food, and hospitality contexts, offering a timeless representation of coffee culture without identifiable branding.

History behind Thelwall and the significance of the Pickering Arms
In AD 923 King Edward the Elder ordered a burh to be built to guard the crossing of the River Mersey from the Danes. It was a mistranslation of the word burh, which means military fort, which led to Thelwall being described as a city, hence the legend which appears on the gable end of the 17th Century Pickering Arms public house- reading In the year 923 King Edward the Elder founded a city here and he called it Thelwall.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG41A4 - The attractive Cheshire village of Grappenhall, near Warrington contains some interesting buildings and retains its characterful cobbled roads and village stocks. The name derives from the Old English words 'grop', 'grep', or 'grepe' (meaning ditch/drain), and halh (meaning flat land by a river). The village was first mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086, referred to as 'Gropenhale' the land was described as having a wood with deer and was valued as being worth five shillings.
The village stands on the Bridgewater Canal, built for Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater by James Brindley and completed in 1772, it was once a busy commercial enterprise transporting coal from the mines in Worsley near Manchester to industries in Widnes, Runcorn and Northwich where the fuel was used in the production of chemicals. Nowadays the quiet towpath of the canal makes for a pleasant stroll.
A Norman church stood on the site of the Church of St. Wilfred although it was largely rebuilt in the sixteenth century. The earliest recorded rector of the church was in 1189. A small chapel was added to the church by the local Boydell family in 1334 and contains a commemorative window in their honour. Fragments of medieval glass have been preserved from the chapel which form the most extensive medieval stained glass in Cheshire. During nineteenth century building work a Saxon font of the local red sandstone was discovered at a depth of about three feet below floor level. The chancel contains an effigy of Sir William Boydell, who died in 1275. The reredos is carved in oak and is based on the painting of The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.
The carving of a cat which adorns the west face of the church tower is said to have been the inspiration for the grinning Cheshire cat in Lewis Carrol's famous children's story 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Carrol was born in the nearby village of Daresbury. By the gate to the churchyard stand the two stone uprights of the village stocks

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3B2 - An incandescent light bulb, incandescent lamp or incandescent light globe is an electric light with a wire filament heated to such a high temperature that it glows with visible light (incandescence). The filament is protected from oxidation with a glass or fused quartz bulb that is filled with inert gas or a vacuum. In a halogen lamp, filament evaporation is slowed by a chemical process that redeposits metal vapor onto the filament, thereby extending its life.
The light bulb is supplied with electric current by feed-through terminals or wires embedded in the glass. Most bulbs are used in a socket which provides mechanical support and electrical connections.
Incandescent bulbs are manufactured in a wide range of sizes, light output, and voltage ratings, from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts. They require no external regulating equipment, have low manufacturing costs, and work equally well on either alternating current or direct current. As a result, the incandescent bulb is widely used in household and commercial lighting, for portable lighting such as table lamps, car headlamps, and flashlights, and for decorative and advertising lighting.
Incandescent bulbs are much less efficient than other types of electric lighting
incandescent bulbs convert less than 5% of the energy they use into visible light, with standard light bulbs averaging about 2.2%. The remaining energy is converted into heat. The luminous efficacy of a typical incandescent bulb for 120 V operation is 16 lumens per watt, compared with 60 lm/W for a compact fluorescent bulb or 150 lm/W for some white LED lamps.
Some applications of the incandescent bulb (such as heat lamps) deliberately use the heat generated by the filament. Such applications include incubators, brooding boxes for poultry, heat lights for reptile tanks, infrared heating for industrial heating and drying processes, lava lamps, and the Easy-Bake Oven toy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6TA - Euston is a London Underground station served by the Victoria line and both central branches of the Northern line. It directly connects with Euston main line station above it. The station is in Travelcard Zone 1.
Euston was constructed as two separate underground stations. Three of the four Northern line platforms date from the station's opening in 1907. The fourth Northern line platform and the two Victoria line platforms were constructed in the 1960s when the station was significantly altered to accommodate the Victoria line. Plans for High Speed 2 and Crossrail 2 both include proposals to modify the station to provide interchanges with the new services.
On the Northern line's Bank branch the station is between Camden Town and King's Cross St Pancras. On the Charing Cross branch it is between Mornington Crescent and Warren Street. On the Victoria line it is between Warren Street and King's Cross St. Pancras. The station is near Euston Square station allowing connections at street level to the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5B - There has been a pub called The Red Lion on this site ever since 1788. The one you see today was constructed in 1821 and, thanks to surviving the Blitz completely intact, has become one of London's rare examples of original ornate Victoriana at its finest.
Uniquely, the pub is full of specially commissioned glasswork, with much of it thought to have been created by the renowned Walter Gibb and Sons of Blackfriars, using some of the most advanced engraving and etching techniques available at the time. While nobody is sure why there are so many mirrors, one theory is that they were deliberately commissioned by a local magistrate at the time in order to reduce the privacy of the pub's snugs, and therefore smiting the activity of local women of the night.
Whatever the reason, it has led to The Red Lion being described as 'a perfect example of the small Victorian gin palace at its best' by Architectural Review, and it really is a window into life in the late 19th century.

It runs from Main Point (the junction of Bread Street, Lauriston Street, East Fountainbridge and High Riggs) down to the south west corner of the Grassmarket. Its name derives from the fact it sloped up from the West Port, which was the only westwards exit from the city when the city walls stood, allowing one to pass through the Flodden Wall. The port (gate) itself was demolished in 1786.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 6357454651 - 'A cold evening in Oldham, with the town centre being dug up, a classic back catalog from the early JD &
Warsaw days. What more could you ask for? A special warm up for a unique tour.
Well I saw Joy Division a couple of times, the same number of times I have been to see the memoral to Ian Curtis in Macclesfield. You can be forgiven for expecting a lot.
I have got to say, Hooky and The Light made a good job of it. The Castle reminded me of the Russell Club in Hulme, it just needed lower ceilings. Down to about 7'.
Rowetta was here too. The EP containing unreleased Joy Division track \u2018Pictures In My Mind\u2019, \u2018Atmosphere\u2019 plus Rowetta\u2019s versions of \u2018New Dawn Fades\u2019 and \u2018Insight\u2019 are worth a download, see www.fac51thehacienda.com/node/2088
Everything sounded raw, stripped down. Particularly the Closer album tracks, the young folks will only know them with the Hannett gloss of polished production.
Hooky's voice is slightly rough and Mancunian too. He needed some pages of his lyric book. Theres no robotic dancing either, and not so much bass playing. He leaves much to Jack, although rips into it as an axe-man when he gets in the mood. Breaks a string too on the Eccleshall Viking 1 (in Red with Cream Binding), so then it becomes more of a prop.
Rowetta's 'Atmosphere' was a highlight for me. Maybe all along that track needed female vocals.
Overall Hooky did good. He wrote this stuff, its in his soul. Thats why he wants to tour and share it, he is certainly not doing for the cash!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDN2 - The Canny Man's pub in Morningside is an Edinburgh institution established in 1871 and passed down through generations of the Kerr family. It is a free house, as free as the wind as Mr Kerr used to say, therefore it has no connection with any brewery and only sells the best of each brewers produce.
The public house serves food everyday from 12 - 3 pm and in the evenings from 6.30 - 9 pm (except Friday / Sunday nights). A snack menu is available till 5 pm. The food that is served is seafood and SMØRREBRØD sandwiches. Introduced many years ago, it has been tailor-made to suit customers needs, and freshly prepared each day, it is ideal as a drinker's meal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHTH - St Mary and All Saints Church is in the centre of the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. Clifton-Taylor includes it in his list of 'best' English parish churches. Richards describes it as one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture remaining in Cheshire. The authors of the Buildings of England series express the opinion that it is one of the most satisfactory Perpendicular churches of Cheshire and its setting brings its qualities out to perfection
It is an impressive church, built generally in the Perpendicular style although the long, and older north transept is constructed in the Decorated style. Built in red sandstone,[2] its plan consists of a west tower, a six-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, and a chancel flanked by chapels to the north and south. The north transept forms the Lady Chapel and the shorter south transept is the Warburton Chapel. At the west end of the south aisle is the south porch. The entire church is crenellated. On the north side of the tower is a sculpture of Saint Christopher and on the south side one of the Blessed Virgin. It has diagonal buttresses and an octagonal south-west turret, a Tudor-arched west window, small arched ringers' windows on the north, west and south faces, a clock on west face, and two-light belfry windows with stone louvres. Its top is crenellated with eight crocketed pinnacles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEXEHD - Bridgewater canal Lymm Village moorings, Warrington Cheshire, England, UK at Dusk
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre.
The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook, the Rochdale Canal in Manchester, the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn, and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Often considered to be the first true canal, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building, known as canal mania.
It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.
