Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKY6X - Scrabble-style letter tiles spelling Trump, Iran and war are arranged on a printed political map of the Middle East, creating a stark editorial concept image about Donald Trump's US foreign policy, Iran, regional conflict and the risk of wider war. The map shows Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and surrounding states, placing the words directly over a region central to oil supply, shipping routes, security alliances and decades of geopolitical tension. The image is useful for stories about US-Iran confrontation, Middle East instability, Israel-Iran tensions, sanctions, nuclear negotiations, military escalation, oil-market risk, the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf security and the global economic consequences of conflict. The Scrabble tiles add a deliberately constructed, symbolic quality, suggesting political calculation, dangerous wordplay and the way simple slogans can sit on top of complex regional realities. It can support editorial coverage of conflict scenarios, war rhetoric, diplomacy, energy security, foreign policy decisions, international law, public opinion, election politics and the consequences of presidential decision-making. Care should be taken not to use the image as evidence of any specific military event unless supported by reporting, because it is a conceptual still life rather than a news photograph. As a stock image, it provides a clear visual shorthand for articles needing to connect Trump, Iran and war risk without showing graphic conflict imagery. The map background gives geographical context, while the cream letter tiles and bold black text make the message immediately readable for news, business, politics, energy and opinion features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEJ6 - A petrol station forecourt in Italy displays very high fuel prices per litre, with the price board showing diesel, super and diesel plus beside blue fuel pumps and hoses. The Italian wording aperto and più servito marks the scene as a working service station where motorists face expensive pump prices for everyday driving, commuting, deliveries, holidays and road travel. The image is useful for editorial stories on the cost of living, energy inflation, road transport, motoring costs, petrol station pricing, diesel dependency, tourism by car and the impact of global oil market shocks on local consumers. The visible prices, including diesel at 2.309, super at 1.969 and diesel plus at 2.429, appear significantly above normal recent Italian average pump-price levels, making the photograph especially relevant for articles about price spikes, regional variations and expensive forecourt locations. It can also illustrate wider debate about crude oil volatility linked to Middle East conflict, Iran and Israel tensions, US foreign policy under Donald Trump, Strait of Hormuz risk, oil company profits, fuel duty and the exposure of European motorists to global energy disruption. Care is needed not to overstate a single cause, because pump prices are shaped by crude prices, taxes, refining margins, exchange rates, distribution costs and forecourt pricing policies, but geopolitical risk can push oil markets higher and feed through into consumer fuel costs. As a stock image, the photograph combines clear Italian signage, recognisable fuel pumps and prominent price numerals, making it commercially useful for news, travel, motoring, economics, consumer rights, business, energy security, climate policy and transport features. The bright daylight, open forecourt and unattended pump island give the scene a matter-of-fact documentary quality, capturing the everyday moment when international events and commodity markets are felt directly at the roadside.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E5HAD4 - Editorial photograph of Victory Over Blindness, the bronze public artwork outside the main entrance to Manchester Piccadilly railway station, seen at dusk with the station frontage, blue Manchester Piccadilly sign, glass doors and evening lights behind it. The sculpture by Johanna Domke-Guyot depicts seven blinded First World War soldiers moving in a line, each guided by the man in front, creating a powerful memorial to injured veterans, sight loss, war trauma and rehabilitation after conflict. Its eye-level placement on Piccadilly Approach makes the figures part of the busy station entrance rather than a distant monument on a plinth.
The image is useful for editorial coverage of Manchester public art, railway station landmarks, war memorials, First World War remembrance, disability representation, Blind Veterans UK, military history, veterans' welfare, urban sculpture and civic memory. The dusk lighting, reflective bronze surfaces and illuminated station signage add strong documentary atmosphere, linking the memorial to everyday travel, commuting, arrival and departure in one of Manchester's best-known transport gateways. The artwork was commissioned by Blind Veterans UK and unveiled in 2018 to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
This photograph also suits features on accessible public art, remembrance beyond traditional military heroism, the impact of chemical weapons and battlefield injury, and the way city centres carry stories of conflict, survival and mutual support. The location outside Manchester Piccadilly gives clear commercial and editorial value for travel, tourism, architecture, heritage and local history uses. Visible elements including bronze soldiers, walking stick, uniforms, station entrance, glass frontage, no smoking sign, dusk sky and railway branding make the image highly searchable for Manchester, public sculpture, war memorial and railway station themes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYWT - A peaceful Palestine protest is shown in Nottingham's Old Market Square, with a large Palestinian flag in the foreground, placards, banners and demonstrators gathered outside the Council House. The wide-angle photograph captures a civic demonstration in the heart of the city, with people assembled in winter clothing, speakers and stewards visible, and the domed Nottingham Council House forming a strong architectural backdrop. The image is commercially useful for stories about pro-Palestinian campaigning, Gaza solidarity, ceasefire calls, human rights protests, anti-war activism, public assembly, civil liberties, policing of demonstrations and the continuing public response in Britain to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The visible banner wording includes calls to condemn genocide, apartheid and state terrorism, giving the image relevance for coverage of protest language, campaign messaging, international law debates and public anger over civilian suffering. It can also illustrate wider themes around freedom of expression, local activism, community relations, grassroots organising, political campaigning, foreign policy, faith and community groups, trade union support, university city protest culture and the use of public squares as democratic spaces. The large flag, small child waving a flag, gathered crowd and civic building combine to show a public demonstration that appears orderly and family-inclusive rather than confrontational. Care should be taken not to state there were no arrests or to make claims about police outcomes unless those details are confirmed by reliable local sources or organisers. As a documentary stock photograph, it records a specific Nottingham protest while also representing a wider pattern of UK demonstrations about Palestine, Gaza and the Middle East, where international events are made visible through marches, placards, speeches and peaceful occupation of civic space.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T3EFRK - Just Stop Oil is a British environmental activist group. Using civil resistance, direct action, vandalism and traffic obstruction, the group aims for the British government to commit to ending new fossil fuel licensing and production. The group was founded in February 2022 and began protesting at English oil terminals in April 2022.
The group has gained both criticism and approval of its methods of activism, which have included vandalism and obstructing traffic.
Just Stop Oil opposes the United Kingdom granting new fossil fuel licensing and production agreements
on its website, it calls for the Government of the United Kingdom to stop all future consents and licensing agreements related to the development, exploration, and production of fossil fuels in the country. The group supports investment in renewable energy, and says that buildings need to have better thermal insulation to avoid wasting energy.
The group describes itself as non-hierarchical, with activists in the group operating in autonomous blocs that share resources but have no formal leadership.
The group favours nonviolent direct action and civil resistance and follows an approach of general social disruption, similar to the methods of climate activist groups Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain, although favouring cultural institutions as protest targets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T0DAF1 - Dame Gracie Fields DBE OStJ (born Grace Stansfield
9 January 1898 27 September 1979) was an English actress, singer, comedian and star of cinema and music hall who was one of the top ten film stars in Britain during the 1930s and was considered the highest paid film star in the world in 1937. She was known affectionately as Our Gracie and the Lancashire Lass and for never losing her strong, native Lancashire accent. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and an Officer of the Venerable Order of St John (OStJ) in 1938, and a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1979.
Fields was born Grace Stansfield, a daughter of Frederick Stansfield (18741956) and his wife Sarah Jane 'Jenny' Stansfield née Bamford (18791953), over a fish and chip shop owned by her grandmother, Sarah Bamford, in Molesworth Street, Rochdale, Lancashire. Her great-grandfather, William Stansfield (b.1805), of Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, was a descendant of the Stansfield family of Stansfield, Yorkshire
In 1939, Fields suffered a breakdown and went to Capri to recuperate. World War II was declared while she was recovering in Capri, and Fields still very ill after her cancer surgery threw herself into her work and signed up for the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) headed by her old film producer, Basil Dean. Fields travelled to France to entertain the troops in the midst of air-raids, performing on the backs of open lorries and in war-torn areas. During the war, she also paid for all servicemen and women to travel free on public transport within the boundaries of Rochdale
She continued to spend much of her time entertaining troops and otherwise supporting the war effort outside Britain
On 3 October 2009, the final train to run on the Oldham Loop before it closed to be converted to a tramway, a Class 156, was named in her honour. In September 2016, a statue of Fields was unveiled outside Rochdale Town Hall

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9GF - The Daily Sketch was a British national tabloid newspaper, founded in Manchester in 1909 by Sir Edward Hulton, 1st Baronet.
In 1920, Lord Rothermere's Daily Mirror Newspapers bought the Daily Sketch. In 1925 Rothermere, sold it to William and Gomer Berry (later Viscount Camrose and Viscount Kemsley).
It was owned by a subsidiary of the Berrys' Allied Newspapers from 1928 (renamed Kemsley Newspapers in 1937 when Camrose withdrew to concentrate his efforts on The Daily Telegraph). In 1946, it was merged with the Daily Graphic. In 1952, Kemsley decided to sell the paper to Associated Newspapers, the owner of the Daily Mail, who promptly revived the Daily Sketch name in 1953. The paper struggled through the 1950s and 1960s, never managing to compete successfully with the Daily Mirror, and in 1971 it was closed and merged with the Daily Mail.
In 1954, an infamous cartoon titled Family Portrait? was published in the paper which mocked Billy Strachan, a black British civil rights leader, for his anti-colonial and anti-imperialist beliefs. The cartoon depicted him with devil horns representing the Caribbean Labour Congress. He also posed with Hewlett Johnson and Paul Robeson, all of whom stood underneath a portrait of the then recently deceased Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.
The Sketch was Conservative in its politics and populist in its tone during its existence through all its changes of ownership. In some ways, much of the more populist element of today's Daily Mail was inherited from the Sketch: before the merger, the more serious Mail, previously a broadsheet, also espoused right-wing politics. The Sketch notably launched a moral panic over Daniel Farson's 1960 television documentary Living for Kicks, a portrait of British teenage life at the time, which led to a war of words between the Sketch and the Daily Mirror. It also participated in the press campaign against the screening of the BBC film The War Game

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JH2P - James Dunwoody Bulloch (June 25, 1823 January 7, 1901) was the Confederacy's chief foreign agent in Great Britain during the American Civil War. Based in Liverpool, he operated blockade runners and commerce raiders that provided the Confederacy with its only source of hard currency. Bulloch arranged for the purchase by British merchants of Confederate cotton, as well as the dispatch of armaments and other war supplies to the South. He also oversaw the construction and purchase of several ships designed at ruining Northern shipping during the Civil War, including CSS Florida, CSS Alabama, CSS Stonewall, and CSS Shenandoah. Due to him being a Confederate secret agent, Bulloch was not included in the general amnesty that came after the Civil War and therefore decided to stay in Liverpool, becoming the director of the Liverpool Nautical College and the Orphan Boys Asylum.
Bulloch's half-brother Irvine Bulloch was a Confederate naval officer and his half-sister Martha Roosevelt was the mother of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and paternal grandmother of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A98 - Remembering the 7 million women who contributed to the war effort by working in hundreds of vital jobs
This huge, bronze monument memorialises the women of World War II. It was unveiled in 2005 and the gold lettering on it is said to mimic the font of wartime ration books.
Around the outside, you can see 17 different sculpted uniforms and helmets. These uniforms represent hundreds of vital jobs undertaken by over 7 million women during the Second World War. However, when the war ended and the men returned to their jobs, women were forced to quietly hang up their uniforms and resign
they were expected to return to their lives before the war, often in more domestic roles.
Women's contribution to both the First and Second World Wars have often been historically overlooked. Unlike men, most women were not on the front line, and instead worked on the land, they were called up to be mechanics, engineers, munitions workers and air raid wardens. Women drove buses and fire-engines.
However, there were over 640,000 women in the armed forces during World War II including the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS). Lilian Bader joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and trained to be an Instrument Repairer
in fact, she was one of the first women to qualify in that post. She became a Leading Aircraftwoman at RAF Shawbury and was then promoted to Acting Corporal.
Women like Georgina Masson, pictured below, joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) which was the women's branch of the British army. Georgina, who was born in Oxford, travelled to Trinidad where she worked as a stenographer for Ford. However, she returned to Britain in 1943 to assist the war effort, and became the first black woman Officer in the ATS. Georgina can be seen holding a copy of Picture Post magazine which features her on the cover, dressed in her ATS uniform.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH5AKR - Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards
During the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency developed a set of playing cards to help troops identify the most-wanted members of President Saddam Hussein's government, mostly high-ranking members of the Iraqi Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party or members of the Revolutionary Command Council
among them were some of Hussein's family members. The cards were officially named the personality identification playing cards. As of 2021, all but 4 of the 52 most wanted have been either killed or captured, eleven of whom have been released.
Each card contains the wanted person's address and, if available, the job performed by that individual. The highest-ranking cards, starting with the aces and kings, were used for the people at the top of the most-wanted list. The ace of spades is Saddam Hussein, the aces of clubs and hearts are his sons Qusay and Uday respectively, and the ace of diamonds is Saddam's presidential secretary Abid Hamid Mahmud al-Tikriti. This strict correspondence to the order of the most-wanted list was not carried through the entire deck, but sometime later in 2003, the list itself was renumbered to conform (almost) to the deck of cards. The card backs feature camouflage reminiscent of that seen on the Desert Camouflage Uniform.
According to US Navy Lieutenant commander Jim Brooks, a spokesman for the Defense Intelligence Agency, such playing cards have been used as far back as the American Civil War & again in World War IIArmy Air Corps decks printed with the silhouettes of German and Japanese fighter aircraft fetch hundreds of dollars todayand in the Korean War. Troops often play cards to pass the time, seeing the names, faces and titles of the wanted Iraqis during their games will help soldiers and Marines in case they run into the wanted individuals in the field.

among them were some of Hussein's family members.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PYX9B0 - The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel who have died in war, and represents a common or field poppy, Papaver rhoeas. Inspired by the World War I poem In Flanders Fields, and promoted by Moina Michael, they were first adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war (19141918). They were then adopted by military veterans' groups in parts of the British Empire.
Today, they are mostly used in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, to commemorate their servicemen and women killed in all conflicts. There, small artificial poppies are often worn on clothing leading up to Remembrance Day/Armistice Day, and poppy wreaths are often laid at war memorials. In Australia and New Zealand, they are also worn on Anzac Day.
The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal has caused some controversy, with someincluding British Army veteransarguing that it has become excessive, is being used to marshal support behind British military campaigns, and that public figures are pressured to wear poppies.
In the United Kingdom, remembrance poppies are sold by The Royal British Legion (RBL). This is a charity providing financial, social, political and emotional support to those who have served or who are currently serving in the British Armed Forces, and their dependants. They are sold on the streets by volunteers in the weeks before Remembrance Day. The remembrance poppy is the trademark of The Royal British Legion. The RBL state, The red poppy is our registered mark and its only lawful use is to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal
its yearly fundraising drive in the weeks before Remembrance Day. The RBL says these poppies are worn to commemorate the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and to show support to those still serving today. Other poppy merchandise is sold throughout the year as part of the ongoing fundraising.

A normal human spine has 33 vertebrae when the bones that form the coccyx are counted individually. Its the atomic number of arsenic.
The divine name Elohim appears 33 times in the story of creation in the opening chapters of Genesis. Jesus's age when he was crucified in 33 A.D.
33 is not only a numerical representation of \u201cthe Star of David,\u201d but also the numerical equivalent of AMEN: 1+13+5+14=33. Its also the highest degree in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.
33 and a third was the speed of an vinyl microgroove LP vinyl record. I have a loft full of those.
At the time the LP was introduced, nearly all phonograph records for home use were made of an abrasive (and therefore noisy) shellac compound, employed a much larger groove, and played at approximately 78 rpm, limiting the playing time of a 12-inch record to less than five minutes per side. The new product was a 12 or 10-inch fine-grooved disc made of vinyl and played with a smaller-tipped 'microgroove' stylus at a speed of 33\u2153 rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for more than 20 minutes.
Only the microgroove standard was truly new, as both vinyl and the 33\u2153 rpm speed had been used for special purposes for many years, as well as in one unsuccessful earlier attempt to introduce a long-playing record for home use.
Although the LP was especially suited to classical music because of its extended continuous playing time, it also allowed a collection of ten or more typical 'pop' music recordings to be put on a single disc. Previously, such collections, as well as longer classical music broken up into several parts, had been sold as sets of 78 rpm records in a specially imprinted 'record album' consisting of individual record sleeves bound together in book form. The use of the word 'album' persisted for the one-disc LP equivalent. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m) of groove on each side, or about a third of a mile.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4HA1 - HMS Belfast is a Town-class light cruiser that was built for the Royal Navy. She is now permanently moored as a museum ship on the River Thames in London and is operated by the Imperial War Museum.
Construction of Belfast, the first ship in the Royal Navy to be named after the capital city of Northern Ireland and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939, Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment, and armour. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944, Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945, Belfast was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 195052 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963.
In 1967, efforts were initiated to avert Belfast's expected scrapping and to preserve her as a museum ship. A joint committee of the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Ministry of Defence were established and then reported in June 1968 that preservation was practical. In 1971, the government decided against preservation, prompting the formation of the private HMS Belfast Trust to campaign for her preservation. The efforts of the Trust were successful, and the government transferred the ship to the Trust in July 1971.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
As fresh today as it was nearly 30 years ago. Witty, ironic and close to danceable (surely theres a 12' cut of this???). This single, 'I Love a Man in a Uniform', was banned by the BBC during the Falklands War in 1982. Not alone, 'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' by the New Zealand pop group Split Enz to be a criticism of the war, and the song was also banned by the BBC. The Fixx single Stand or Fall was given little radio play due to its anti-war lyrics, which coincided with the Falklands conflict.
One of the best things to come out of Leeds since the First Trans-Pennine express out to Manchester &
Liverpool, Gang Of Four were most active between 1977 &
1984.
singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill were heavily influenced by a university-funded trip to New York, where they saw Television and the Ramones at CBGB's. Apparently, music writer Greil Marcus found his first viewing of the group's performance so shattering that he left after their set, rather than risk having the impact of the deeply political Gang of Four's songs dampened by the pop-punk of Buzzcocks.
I still have the Fast Product first release, 'Damaged Goods' B/W '(Love Like) Anthrax' and 'Armalite Rifle', from June 1978. This led to two Peel radio sessions, which, with their incendiary live performances, propelled the band to international attention and sold-out shows across Europe and North America. They were then signed by EMI records.
GO4 influenced many bands through the years including REM, . Kurt Cobain stated that Nirvana started as 'a Gang of Four ripoff'.
To hear more, track down 'A Brief History of the Twentieth Century' a great compilation. Tell 'em I sent you.
------------------------
The adoption and continuing use of red by most English soldiers after the Restoration (1660) was the result of circumstances rather than policy, including the relative cheapness of red dyes. Red was by no means universal at first, with grey and blue coats also being worn.
There is no known basis for the myth that red coats were favoured because they did not show blood stains. Blood does in fact show on red clothing as a black stain.
Even after the adoption of khaki service dress in 1902, most British infantry and some cavalry regiments continued to wear scarlet tunics on parade and for off-duty 'walking out dress', until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

Ace of Spades' is perhaps the best known song by the English band Mot\u00f6rhead. The 7' vinyl single was released in October 1980 as a preview to the album Ace of Spades and autumn tour. Bronze Records also released a 12' vinyl pressing in special Christmas picture sleeves, limited to 50,000 copies. The picture of the band in Santa outfits used on the cover was taken at the Aylesbury Fair, while the band were on tour.
Its a staple of their live shows and I have probably seen it played as encore three or four times. For the lyrics, Lemmy said he 'used gambling metaphors, mostly cards and dice - when it comes to that sort of thing, I'm more into the one-arm bandits actually, but you can't really sing about spinning fruit, and the wheels coming down'
In March 2005, Q magazine placed it at no 27 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks, stating 'This song has an intro which wouldn't be out of place ushering in the end of the world'. In 2009 it was named both the 10th greatest hard rock and metal song of all time by VH1.
Up to this point the band consisted of the original trio of Lemmy on bass &
lead vocals, 'Fast' Eddie Clarke on lead guitar and Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor on drums.

In April 2003, Saddam's whereabouts remained in question during the weeks following the fall of Baghdad and the conclusion of the major fighting of the 2003 Iraq war. Various sightings of Saddam were reported in the weeks following the war but none was authenticated. At various times Saddam released audio tapes promoting popular resistance to the U.S.-led occupation.
Saddam was placed at the top of the U.S. list of 'most-wanted Iraqis'. By July 2003, his sons Uday and Qusay and 14-year-old grandson Mustapha were killed in a three-hour gunfight with U.S. forces.
On the 14th December 2003, U.S. administrator in Iraq L. Paul Bremer announced that Saddam Hussein had been captured at a farmhouse in ad-Dawr near Tikrit. Bremer presented video footage of Saddam in custody. The enduring image of the capture however, was a tabloid photo of the ex-leader in his underpants. The release of the pictures is certainly a violation of the Geneva Convention.
'Pants' is a suitable metaphor for the shaky evidence that originally was used to justify the conflict, which has had devastating effects on the Iraqi people, hundreds of servicemans families and handed Al-Qaeda the perfect environment to recruit for more global jihad. Well done politicians.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4645364243 - 'This is a page from the book of remembrance inside the Priory chapel at Christchurch, Dorset,UK.
It is the Royal British Legion War Memorial Chapel and seeks to remember those who have died in the First and Second World Wars, but also more recently the Falklands and Bosnia.
This is the entry for Bert Hiscock service number 33287. He held the rank of private and he belonged to the 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment. He is posted missing at Battle of Arras 3rd May 1917.
Throughout the books, soldiers were recorded as killed in action, at battles like the Somme, died of disease attributable to service, many reported missing, Drowned at sea in Battle of Jutland and Died of heatstroke at Aden. Approximately a hundred bound sheets of paper, each a life, frozen in this book of history.
Always a shame that the civilian casualties are not accessible in this way. It has been said though that 'The Truth, is always the first casualty of war'. (Often attributed to Winston Churchill).
If you are in the area, the chapel is well worth a visit.
