Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG904C - Hale Head Lighthouse was built to guide ships into the Upper Mersey. It is the most southerly point in Lancashire.
The channel above Garston was first lit in 1838. The original lighthouse at Hale Head was established at the same time, with land being leased from the Blackburne family of Hale Hall.
The original lighthouse was a short square tower. An adjacent cottage had previously been used as a bathing house and was converted into dwellings for the lighthouse keeper and family.
On 1st January 1877 the Upper Mersey Navigation Commission was established, taking over jurisdiction for Hale, Garston and Ince Lighthouses.
Following a survey, a new taller lighthouse was built in 1906 to replace the earlier tower. The new lighthouse exhibited a fixed white light, and a fog bell sounded during poor visibility.
Hale Head Lighthouse was struck by enemy bombing during the Second World War.
Gradually the Mersey silted up along the upper reaches, and in April 1958 the lighthouse was decommissioned and sold as a private residence. The cottage was later demolished and replaced with a new bungalow.
The former optic is on display at Merseyside Maritime Museum, in Liverpool.
The lighthouse was repainted and temporarily re-lit in June 2022 to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

For the first time in many years, the parade will be led by a traditional pipe band with members from the Everton and District Pipe Band in full highland dress. Minibuses will be driving within the ranks of the parade to allow elderly members, some of whom have over 60 years of service to the institution in Liverpool, or members unable to walk to a full and active part in the proceedings.
This year's parade is the first in 71 years to take place with a king as the monarch. Special badges have been commissioned to celebrate the King's Coronation which took place in May.

It opened on 1 October 1976 in the basement of The Fruit Exchange in Victoria Street, with performances by The Runaways and The Sex Pistols (their only Liverpool gig) before soon moving around the block to its long-term site on Mathew Street opposite The Cavern Club where The Beatles and other bands of the 1960s played, and became notable for hosting early performances by many punk and post-punk bands.[1]
The club was started by Roger Eagle and Ken Testi (manager of cult Liverpool band Deaf School) and joined later by Pete Fulwell (owner of a small record label Inevitable and later to become manager of Liverpool bands It's Immaterial and The Christians). The club was given the name 'Eric's' by Ken Testi as an antidote to disco clubs with names such as 'Tiffany's' and 'Samantha's'
The club played host to many local, national and international bands primarily within the music sub-cultures of the time, such as Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks, The Clash, Joy Division, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cardiacs, The Slits, Talking Heads, The Stranglers, Ultravox, Wire, XTC, X-Ray Spex and early gigs by New Order and Mick Hucknall (pre Simply Red).
The club acted as a catalyst for local musicians (often also from the Runcorn, Southport, Skelmersdale, Wirral areas) and saw many local artists later become successful acts, including Dead or Alive, Echo & the Bunnymen, Julian Cope, The Teardrop Explodes, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Ellery Bop and Wah! Heat

It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook

The Bridgewater canal is described as the first great achievement of the canal age, although the Sankey Canal opened earlier. Bridgewater captured the public imagination because of its engineering feats
it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, and a tunnel at Worsley. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as Canal Mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

Under government plans, people who steal a canine companion could face up to five years in jail if convicted of dog abduction.
The offence is being added to the Kept Animals Bill, which is currently making its way through the Commons, after a recommendation by the government's pet theft taskforce in September.
The taskforce, launched in May, looked into a reported rise in pet thefts during the pandemic. More than 2,000 such incidents were reported to the police in 2020.
Dognapping remains the biggest issue, with around seven in 10 incidents of pet theft recorded by police involving dogs, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
The move has been welcomed by leaders from animal rights organisations.
Chief veterinary officer Dr Christine Middlemiss said it is an important step forward with dogs being treated as sentient beings rather than merely property.

First proposed by Thomas Homer in 1802 as a link from the Paddington arm of the then Grand Junction Canal (opened in 1801) with the River Thames at Limehouse, the Regent's Canal was built during the early 19th century after an Act of Parliament was passed in 1812. in 1811 he had produced a masterplan for George IV, then Prince Regent, to redevelop a large area of central north London “ as a result, the Regent's Canal was included in the scheme, running for part of its distance along the northern edge of Regent's Park.
As with many Nash projects, the detailed design was passed to one of his assistants, in this case James Morgan, who was appointed chief engineer of the canal company. Work began on 14 October 1812. The first section from Paddington to Camden Town opened in 1816 and included a 251-metre (274 yd) long tunnel under Maida Hill east of an area now known as 'Little Venice', and a much shorter tunnel, just 48 metres (52 yd) long, under Lisson Grove. The Camden to Limehouse section, including the 886-metre (969 yd) long Islington Tunnel and the Regent's Canal Dock (used to transfer cargo from seafaring vessels to canal barges “ today known as Limehouse Basin), opened four years later on 1 August 1820. Various intermediate basins were also constructed (e.g.: Cumberland Basin to the east of Regent's Park, Battlebridge Basin (close to King's Cross, London) and City Road Basin). Many other basins such as Wenlock Basin, Kingsland Basin, St. Pancras Stone and Coal Basin, and one in front of the Great Northern Railway's Granary were also built, and some of these survive.

It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building and possesses special architectural and historic interest within a national context. It was built in 1906 as an extension to Waterloo House and the existing library with a grant from Andrew Carnegie, and closed in 2012
In 1902, more library and reading room space was needed. The Runcorn Free Library Committee applied to Andrew Carnegie to fund the extension. Carnegie had provided grants for many other libraries in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Carnegie replied in 1903 that he had received an overwhelming number of applications. In 1904 Carnegie refused the grant as he believed the income of the Library Committee would not support larger premises. An amended application was made and Carnegie gifted £3,000 in November 1904 to erect a new public library stipulating that a site must also be given for the building. At a Runcorn Urban District Council meeting in June 1905 it was decided to carry out the plans for the library alteration and extension using the £3,000 gifted by Carnegie. An exterior wall of Waterloo House formed an interior wall of the extended library, both buildings housing the library

The Carnegie Library was also designed by James Wilding, surveyor and water engineer to the Runcorn Urban District Council

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BM726H - Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden was created by a wealthy Warrington banker, Thomas Parr, around 1830 when he built a new house and estate for his family. The land nearest the house was designated as parkland to give a suitable setting to the mansion and the outer areas were farm land.
The landscape that existed at that time was incorporated into the estate and many of the woodlands, ponds and avenues that formed the parkland then still remain in place today. As a whole these features form a significant record of a landscape designed in the manner of a gentry country estate. It appears, from historical records, that the estate was at its height from 1875 “ 1899 and this is considered to be the most significant period for the design and productivity of the garden.
The house was demolished in 1975 but the 4 acre walled garden was retained as a local amenity. English Partnerships refurbished much of the garden as part of their development of the area and new housing, working closely with the Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden Conservation Project charity, the Warrington Organic and Wildlife Gardening Society and the Woodland Trust.
Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council took ownership of the garden in 2005 and, with the help of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden, has developed the facility into a peaceful, well maintained and beautiful garden which is now a popular local visitor attraction and resource for horticulture, education and enjoyment.
The walled garden consists of two main areas, the fully working kitchen garden and the ornamental pleasure garden which are separated by a yew hedge. The garden is very unusual in that both the kitchen garden and pleasure garden are enclosed within a single, continuous sandstone wall. The site also includes a run of 8 fully refurbished Victorian glasshouses, several outbuildings, 3 ponds and a café in the central glasshouse space.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM2528 - The Ribblehead Viaduct or Batty Moss Viaduct carries the Settle“Carlisle railway across Batty Moss in the Ribble Valley at Ribblehead, in North Yorkshire, England. The viaduct, built by the Midland Railway, is 28 miles (45 km) north-west of Skipton and 26 miles (42 km) south-east of Kendal. It is a Grade II* listed structure. Ribblehead Viaduct is the longest and the third tallest structure on the Settle“Carlisle line.
The viaduct was designed by John Sydney Crossley, chief engineer of the Midland Railway, who was responsible for the design and construction of all major structures along the line. The viaduct was necessitated by the challenging terrain of the route. Construction began in late 1869. It necessitated a large workforce, up to 2,300 men, most of whom lived in shanty towns set up near its base. Over 100 men lost their lives during its construction. The Settle to Carlisle line was the last main railway in Britain to be constructed primarily with manual labour.
By the end of 1874, the last stone of the structure had been laid
on 1 May 1876, the Settle“Carlisle line was opened for passenger services. During the 1980s, British Rail proposed closing the line. In 1989, after lobbying by the public against closure, it was announced that the line would be retained. Since the 1980s, the viaduct has had multiple repairs and restorations and the lines relaid as a single track. The land underneath and around the viaduct is a scheduled ancient monument

John Foxx And The Maths is a musical project featuring electronic music pioneers John Foxx and Benge. The duo were initially a studio based project working from Benge's studio in Shoreditch, London but have also engaged in live work. They specialise in the use of analogue synthesisers and drum machines and have released two albums, Interplay and The Shape of Things, both in 2011.
You will perhaps know John Foxx as a founder member of 1970's band Ultravox. In December 2009 the official John Foxx website Metamatic announced Foxx's new musical project. Benge had already broken the news on his own blog in November calling The Maths 'a new album project'.
An initial single Destination / September Town was released in December 2009 as download only from Townsend Records and later via i-tunes. The duo continued to work in Benge's studio in Shoreditch throughout 2010 and some new tracks were previewed at the Short Circuit electronic music festival held at The Roundhouse in London on 5 June 2010.
A new album entitled Interplay was announced in January 2011containing this track and released on March 21. The official website described the album as 'moody and atmospheric, but also full of songs that are actually more \u201dpop\u201d than avant garde, Interplay pulls various strands of electronic music together \u2013 from early electro to 70s Krautrock, even flashes of Cabaret Voltaire and Foxx\u2019s first band, Ultravox!'
The album gained much critical acclaim with The Quietus calling it 'one of the finest electronic records you will hear in 2011.

Weddings are big business and many people looking to tie the knot visit wedding catwalk shows in hotels etc, deciding how they are going to spend the average of over \u00a312K on their event and honeymoon. As anyone who knows me I am not a big believer in the institution, but I had an interesting day photographing the catwalk show at the Holiday Inn Wilmslow, near Manchester Airport..

The Music burned like a short supernova. They were an English alternative rock band, formed Kippax, Leeds, in 1999. Comprising Robert Harvey (vox, guitar), Adam Nutter (lead guitar), Stuart Coleman (bass) and Phil Jordan (drums), the band came to prominence with the release of their debut album, The Music, in 2002.
The band released two further studio albums, Welcome to the North (2004) and Strength in Numbers (2008), before parting ways in 2011.
In January 2010, the band began demoing material for their fourth studio album. The album was due for release sometime 2011.
Harvey has since gone on to work with The Streets, collaborating on the album Computers and Blues. Mike Skinner of The Streets and Harvey also released a Christmas song in December 2010, called Scrooge And Marley \u2013 I Don't Want It To Be Me.
On March 31, 2011, The Music announced a series of farewell gigs on their website. The band will play three shows in Japan July 25\u201327. They are then scheduled for a show at Brixton Academy London, England on August 4, before bringing the curtain down on their career with two home town gigs at the O2 Academy in Leeds on 5 and 6 August.
On April 21, 2011 the band released the newest and final song of their career on their official website. 'Ghost Hands' was recorded for their now scrapped fourth studio album sessions
