It operates passenger trains on the West Midlands franchise between London and the English Midlands under two trade names: West Midlands Railway (within the West Midlands region) and London Northwestern Railway (LNR) (outside the West Midlands region).
It is owned by a consortium of three companies: Abellio, JR East and Mitsui Group.
In April 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the shortlist of bidders for the West Midlands franchise, comprising the incumbent operator Govia, MTR Corporation, and West Midlands Trains: a consortium of Abellio (70%), JR East (15%) and Mitsui (15%). In July 2016, MTR Corporation withdrew from the bidding process.
The invitation to tender was issued in August 2016. In August 2017, the West Midlands Trains consortium was awarded the franchise. It took over from London Midland on 10 December 2017. The franchise is scheduled to run until March 2026
Unlike the previous London Midland franchise, which was solely accountable to the DfT, West Midlands will also be accountable for services that operate wholly within the West Midlands region to West Midlands Rail Executive, a group of 16 local authorities. However, the DfT will still need to approve any changes West Midlands Rail wish to make until the franchise is relet, by which time West Midlands Rail will award the future franchise for services wholly within the West Midlands region.

Opened on 30 May 1999, it currently consists of a single route, Line 1, which operates between the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton via the towns of West Bromwich and Wednesbury, running on a mixture of reopened disused railway line (the Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level Line) and on-street running in urban areas. The line originally terminated at Birmingham Snow Hill station, but with extensions opened in 2015 and 2019, now runs into Birmingham City Centre to terminate at Birmingham Library in Centenary Square, with further extension underway and due to be complete in 2021.
The system is owned by the public body Transport for West Midlands, and operated through Midland Metro Ltd, a company wholly owned by the West Midlands Combined Authority.
Extensions to Line 1, to Edgbaston at the southern end and Wolverhampton railway station in the north are currently under construction. Construction of a new Line 2 from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill was approved in March 2019

The old style greasy spoon and working mans cafe is under threat. As our town centres and working (wo)men are being decimated, this old institution is disapearing.
Classic formica tables, breakfast for \u00a32, posters to take you to far away places while you mop up your beans with a potato cake. Priceless!
The typical greasy spoon serves mainly fried or grilled food from a more or less invariable repertoire: bacon, sausages, fried eggs, fried or tinned tomatoes, fried mushrooms, baked beans, chips, and sometimes black or white pudding, bubble and squeak (a fried mixture of cabbage and mashed potato), and fried bread.
These are served in a variety of combinations and usually it is possibly to order any combination. This part of the menu is generally referred to as breakfast even if it is available all day. Real greasy spoons do not have a continental coffee machine capable of capuchino, so dont embarass yourself by asking. Expect coffee to be instant, teabags rule here.
Who knows, the less than rigourous attitude to hygiene and dishwashing may well one day be proved to be good for us. Well its natural to be exposed to a few germs n'est pas?
