The bus station's enquiry office is now in the main building, but was in the Queen's Building, a grade II listed building, now host to Costa Coffee, but which was formerly the carriage entrance to the railway station.
The original bus station was on the northern side of Railway Drive approximately where the Ring Road passes under the present road bridge. It was primarily used by Midland Red although a few WMPTE (ex-Midland Red) services also departed from there.
The station, which had existed since 1986, was closed after service finished on 3 April 2010. (The 1986 bus station replaced the original bus station on the northern side of Railway Drive.) Building work took place during the ensuing months, in which a new pedestrian bridge linking the railway and bus stations was built, a contraflow system installed along the ring road and the bus station rebuilt. The station re-opened on 24 July 2011, which coincided with the Wolverhampton bus network review and marked the end of Phase One of the project. Phase Two includes improvements to the railway station, a new hotel, and redevelopment of the canalside area, but a date for this has yet to be finalised.

The second-generation Eclipse 2 was launched in 2008, followed by the third-generation Eclipse 3 in 2015. The Eclipse, and its sister design the Solar, were named for a solar eclipse which was visible in the UK in 1999, the year of its introduction.
The Eclipse was launched in 1999 on Volvo B7L chassis and, in 2003, the body was made available on the more popular Volvo B7RLE chassis. A coach version, the Eclipse SchoolRun, was later launched on high floor Volvo B7R chassis. In November 2008, Wright unveiled the Eclipse 2 at that year's Euro Bus Expo, with front and rear ends facelifted to match the Wright StreetCar. In 2015, the Eclipse 3 was launched on Volvo B8RLE chassis, the successor to the B7RLE. Production of the Eclipse has been suspended as Wrightbus entered administration in September 2019.
Over 2,100 Eclipses were built, with FirstGroup the largest customer. A double-decker version of the Eclipse is also available, known as the Wright Eclipse Gemini, and formerly also an articulated version, the Wright Eclipse Fusion.

The new building, which was designed by Clifford Culpin & Partners in the Postmodern style and built by Taylor Woodrow Construction, was completed in 1978. It was officially opened by the Prime Minister James Callaghan on 24 February 1979.The design, which involved a stepped profile for the building and located it on a large piazza, has similarities with the Panch Mahal in Fatehpur Sikri. It received a Civic Trust Award in 1979.
Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh visited the civic centre and met with civic leaders on 24 June 1994 and signed the visitors' book before departing for a tour of the new Molineux Stadium. Environmental works to improve the open area between the civic centre and St Peter's Collegiate Church were carried out with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund between 1996 and 2004.
A substantial programme of restoration works for the civic centre and its car park, to a design by Associated Architects, was carried out by Speller Metcalfe at a cost of ?22 million and completed in 2018. Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the 19th century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the village hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was revived by the then headmaster, Bob Jones, in 1973. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day.

Local schoolchildren dance around the tree in the style of a maypole chanting verses to the tune of Bonnie Dundee, with the following repeated chorus:
Up with fresh garlands this midsummer morn,
Up with red ribbons on Appleton Thorn.
Come lasses and lads to the Thorn Tree today
To bawm it and shout as ye bawm it Hurray!
Bawming means decorating ? during the ceremony the thorn tree is decorated with ribbons and garlands. According to legend, the hawthorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was itself said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who arranged for Jesus's burial after the crucifixion

The park opens annually at weekends from Easter onwards and daily during the school summer holidays, until the first weekend in September.
The pleasure park is located opposite the sandy beachfront at Barry and contains a variety of amusements including fairground rides, attractions & food outlets. The surrounding area, known locally as Barry Island, contains a further variety of shops, bars and restaurants.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. There are a number of graves of aircrew who died at HMS Blackcap, mainly in flying accidents, in St Cross churchyard, known locally as the war graves.

Oi to the World! is a Christmas album by the southern California punk rock band The Vandals. It was released in 1996 by their label Kung Fu Records, who also re-released it in 2000 with altered artwork and a bonus track.
It was the band's sixth full-length studio album and presented holiday-themed songs written and performed with the tongue-in-cheek humor for which the band is known.
Because Kung Fu Records itself had been formed in 1996 and was at this point still a small label, the original pressing of the album was somewhat limited and it remained relatively obscure for several years (the band's major studio albums at this time were being released by Nitro Records). The Vandals maintained a close friendship with fellow Orange County band No Doubt, who covered the album's title track 'Oi to the World' for a Christmas compilation in 1997.
Their version, which was produced by Vandals guitarist Warren Fitzgerald, received mainstream exposure and popularity and spawned a music video. Partly thanks to the exposure brought by association with No Doubt (with whom the Vandals also toured), fan interest in Oi to the World! increased and in 2000 Kung Fu Records, which by now had grown in size, re-released the album with new artwork and a bonus overture, as well as a new intro for the title track.
The Vandals are Dave Quackenbush on vox, Warren Fitzgerald on guitar, backing vocals, Joe Escalante on bass guitar, backing vocals and Josh Freese on drums.

The old style greasy spoon and working mans cafe is under threat. As our town centres and working (wo)men are being decimated, this old institution is disapearing.
Classic formica tables, breakfast for \u00a32, posters to take you to far away places while you mop up your beans with a potato cake. Priceless!
The typical greasy spoon serves mainly fried or grilled food from a more or less invariable repertoire: bacon, sausages, fried eggs, fried or tinned tomatoes, fried mushrooms, baked beans, chips, and sometimes black or white pudding, bubble and squeak (a fried mixture of cabbage and mashed potato), and fried bread.
These are served in a variety of combinations and usually it is possibly to order any combination. This part of the menu is generally referred to as breakfast even if it is available all day. Real greasy spoons do not have a continental coffee machine capable of capuchino, so dont embarass yourself by asking. Expect coffee to be instant, teabags rule here.
Who knows, the less than rigourous attitude to hygiene and dishwashing may well one day be proved to be good for us. Well its natural to be exposed to a few germs n'est pas?

Great guides, but when travelling you were never alone really as whatever off the beaten track cafe you were eating BBQ guinea pig or whtever, you were always surrounded by other backpackers planning their next meal using that self same guide!
The name Lonely Planet to me conjours up an idea of this packed green and blue rock surrounded by some unimaginable emptyness. There is so much of it that the light-year, ie the time it takes light or an image to be seen a year later away, is the only practical unit of measurement to be used.

It is dominated by its largest building, Manchester Town Hall Grade I, a Victorian Gothic building by Alfred Waterhouse and previously in the opposite corner by the Square Albert, a Tetleys pub.
Albert Memorial, a monument to Prince Albert, Prince consort of Queen Victoria is in the square. The square, also named after the Prince, was originally laid out to provide a space for this memorial in 1863\u201367. Work on the new town hall began in 1868 and was completed in 1877. On the top of the clock tower is a golden cotton seed, the symbol of teh source of Manchester City and its cottonopolis prosperity.
The creation of the square arose out of a project by Manchester Corporation's Monuments Committee to erect a memorial to Prince Albert who had unexpectedly died of typhoid in 1861. After some initial proposals to create a memorial library, museum or botanical gardens, the committee decided to erect a statue in a decorated canopy. It was originally planned to place the monument in Piccadilly Gardens, but it was felt that its ornate design was not in keeping with the surrounding buildings. In 1863, land was offered by the Corporation which was cleared to make way for a public space.
The project won much public support
the Manchester Bricklayers' Protection Society donated 50,000 bricks towards the construction of the monument, 'as an expression of sympathy towards our beloved Queen'. When construction problems arose (the site was found to be riddled with drains and culverts) and these bricks were used up on the foundations alone, a further public subscription was launched in 1865 and a further \u00a36,249 was raised, in spite of the hardships of the Cotton Famine.
The Memorial is topped with an ornate spire, and on each side a crocketed gable with canopied pinnacles on colonettes. Within the canopies stand symbolic figures representing art, commerce, science and agriculture. Below these stand secondary figures representing particular disciplines

In the town hall, despite its medieval styling, the building was designed to support the practical technologies of the 19th century. These included gas lighting, and a warm-air heating system, which provided fresh air drawn through ornamental stone air inlets placed below the windows and admitted behind the hot water pipes and 'coils' of rooms. Warmed, fresh air was also fed into the stairwells and through hollow shafts within the spiral staircases in order to ventilate the corridors. The pipes that supplied the gas for the lighting were ingeniously concealed underneath the banister rails of the spiral staircases.
While not quite as grand as the hotel de ville in Brussels or similar buildings in Europe, the town hall in Manchester proclaimed that the city had 'arrived'. A saying capturing this sense of innovation survives today: 'What Manchester does today, the rest of the world does tomorrow. Although I do not think they were in fact refering to Bez of the Happy Mondays when they coined that :-)

The Millennium Stadium is owned by Millennium Stadium plc which is a subsidiary company of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). The stadium was designed by a team led by architects Bligh Lobb Sports Architecture, who merged to become HOK Sport Venue Event, which would be renamed Populous in early 2009. WS Atkins were the structural engineers, and the building contractor was Laing. The total construction cost of the stadium was ?121 million, of which the Millennium Commission funded ?46 million.
The stadium opened in June 1999, and the first major event to be held was an international rugby union match on 26 June 1999, when Wales beat South Africa in a friendly by 29?19, before a test crowd of 29,000. With total seating capacity of 74,500, it is the third largest stadium in the Six Nations Championship behind the Stade de France and Twickenham, which is the largest. One of five branches of the Imperial War Museum, it explores the impact of modern conflicts on people and society. It is the first branch of the Imperial War Museum to be located in the north of England.
The museum occupies a site overlooking the Manchester Ship Canal in Trafford Park, an area which during the Second World War was a key industrial centre and consequently heavily bombed during the Manchester Blitz in 1940. The area is now home to the Lowry cultural centre and the MediaCityUK development, which stand opposite the museum at Salford Quays.
The museum building was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and opened in July 2002, receiving 470,000 visitors in its first year of opening. It was recognised with awards or prize nominations for its architecture, but has also been criticised for poor energy efficiency. The museum features a permanent exhibition of chronological and thematic displays, supported by hourly audiovisual presentations which are projected throughout the gallery space.
The museum also hosts a programme of temporary exhibitions in a separate gallery. Since opening, the museum has operated a successful volunteer programme, which since January 2007 has been run in partnership with Manchester Museum. As part of a national museum, Imperial War Museum North is financed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and by self-generated income.

Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the Nineteenth century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the Village Hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was later revived by the then headmaster, Mr. Bob Jones in the early 1970s. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day. Local schoolchildren dance around the tree.
Bawming means decorating - during the ceremony the thorn tree is decorated with ribbons and garlands. According to legend, the hawthorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was itself said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who arranged for Jesus's burial after the Crucifixion.

the other being Pomona Docks to the east.
They were opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria and spanned 120 acres (49 ha) of water and 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land. At their height the Manchester Docks were the third busiest port in Britain, but after containerisation and the limit placed on vessel size on the Manchester Ship Canal, the docks declined during the 1970s. They closed in 1982, resulting in the loss of 3000 jobs
