Life and career
She was born Bessie Grace Gupton in Alabama, the daughter of gospel singer Emma Washington. She grew up in Detroit and first performed in her mother's choir, the Emma Washington Gospel Singers. She toured with the group for ten years, from the age of nine, before securing her first professional job, as a backing singer for B. B. King. As Bessie Watson, she first recorded in 1963, releasing the single 'Deed I Do backed by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, on the Riverside label, and then two singles, I'm in Your Corner and Wake Up Crying on the Jay Pee label. As Tobi Lark, she then recorded several singles for the Palmer, Topper, and U.S.D. labels, but none achieved much commercial success. She also performed with the Impressions, the Four Tops, Ben E. King, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis, and Duke Ellington, among others
In 1968, in Detroit, she recorded Time Will Pass You By, a song written by English-born songwriter and record producer John Rhys Eddins with Nick Zesses and Dino Fekaris. The record was released on the Mala label under the name Tobi Legend, but it was unsuccessful until it was picked up in the early 1970s by followers of the Northern soul scene in the UK. The song became known as one of the Three Before Eight, played at the conclusion of every all-nighter at the Wigan Casino club, and has since featured on several anthologies of Northern soul music including The Best Northern Soul All-Nighter ... Ever!, The Northern Soul Story, and The Wigan Casino Story

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF662 - Eastern Bloc was established in 1985 by John Berry & Martin Price (808 State). The shop was originally located in Afflecks Palace and has recently moved to its present location on Stevenson Square (5a Stevenson Sq, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M1 1DN) in 2011. It soon became a cultural icon and integral part within the Manchester music scene. Back in the late 80's E Bloc helped to launch bands such as the Inspiral Carpets, while also hosting in-store signings with The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. The shop was also responsible for breaking much of the new dance music at the time, being one of the only shops in the UK to import dance music from around the globe. One of the owners went on to become part of 808 State. E Bloc also had heavy involvement in the early career paths of A Guy Called Gerald & K Klass. Many famous faces have worked behind the counter or been regular customers in the shop. Local DJ's and globe trotting club DJ's would use E Bloc as their first port of call to get their hands on the latest vinyl promos. Forty-five is a triangular number, and in particular the sum of all the decimal digits (0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 = 45). It is the smallest triangle number (after 1) which can be written as the sum of two squares. It is also a hexagonal and 16-gonal number.
The '45 refers to the 1745 Jacobite Rising in Great Britain, or the year that World War II ended, which was 1945. Guns or ammunition of .45 caliber. In the United States, '45' is often a reference to one of two specific .45 caliber cartridges\u2014 the .45 Colt or the .45 ACP.
Its a type of gramophone record classified by its revolution speed of 45 revolutions per minute (rpm). One of the key 45 single generating labels of my youth was Stiff.
Stiff Records is a British independent record label formed in London, England, by Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman (aka Jake Riviera). Originally active from 1976 to 1985, the label was reactivated in 2007.
Established at the outset of the punk rock boom, Stiff Records signed various punk and New Wave acts such as Nick Lowe, The Damned, Lene Lovich, Wreckless Eric, Plummet Airlines, Elvis Costello, and Ian Dury. The label's marketing and advertising was often provocative and witty billing itself as 'The World's Most Flexible Record Label'. Other slogans were 'We came. We saw. We left', 'If It Ain't Stiff, It Ain't Worth a F**k', and 'When You Kill Time, You Murder Success' (printed on promotional wall clocks).
On the label of Stiff's sampler compilation Heroes &
Cowards was printed: 'In '78 everyone born in '45 will be 33-1/3'. A very early Stiff sampler album, A Bunch of Stiff Records, introduced the slogan, 'If they're dead, we'll sign them' and 'Undertakers to the Industry'.
This is the first vingle single released on the label (Buy-1) So It Goes, by Nick Lowe. Here in its original Stiff sleeve.

John Peel was the daddy, 10 til 12 under the candlewick bedspread, then Piccadilly Records on Saturday to track down his faves. Which mostly became his faves, running through his life like letters in a stick of rock.

The programme was the world's longest-running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each show consisted of performances of some of the week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Top 30 was used from 1969, and the Top 40 from 1984.
Dusty Springfield's I Only Want to Be with You was the first song featured on TOTP, while the Rolling Stones were the first band to perform, with I Wanna Be Your Man. Snow Patrol were the last act to play live on the weekly show when they performed their single Chasing Cars.

Figures had plummeted to below three million, prompting an announcement by the BBC that the show was going to move, again, to Sunday evenings on BBC Two, thus losing the prime-time slot on BBC One that it had maintained for more than forty years.
This move was widely reported as a final sidelining of the show, and perhaps signalled its likely cancellation. At the time, it was insisted that this was so the show would air immediately after the official announcement of the new top 40 chart on Radio 1, as it was thought that by the following Friday, the chart seemed out of date. The final Top of the Pops to be shown on BBC One (barring Christmas and New Year specials) was broadcast on Monday 1
