The Church of St. Peter in Bacharach is a former collegiate church . It has been evangelical since the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate in 1556 and belongs to the Evangelical parish of Vierthäler in the church district of Koblenz of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .
Since 2002, St. Peter's Church has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley , and it is also a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention
St. Peter represents the Rhenish transitional style in Bacharach . The church was built from 1230 to 1269 as a three-aisled gallery basilica and renovated at the end of the 19th century. Despite the largely Romanesque construction, the four-storey wall elevation was based on the early Gothic of French church building, which was often taken as a model at this time, especially in the Rhineland. From 1194 until the Reformation, St. Peter belonged to the Andreas Monastery in Cologne . The monastery provided the pastor and was responsible for ecclesiastical jurisdiction in the four valley area, which was based in the old Kurkölnisches Saalhofhad opposite the church. In 1810, the French administration demolished the Saalhof , and today the Altkölnische Saal occupies the site.

Leach Rhodes Walker described us as ˜excellent'
after the successful collaboration. Maple's
knowledge and craftsmanship was excellent
throughout, said LRW's lead project designer,
Ka Yin Man. From when we spoke to sales
about the commercials, to (dealing with) the
design and projects teams, the whole experience
was collaborative. In a post-project interview,
the architects' firm gave us top marks for design
services, project support, meeting deadlines
and the quality of the finished product. Added
Ka Yin: Maple were always helpful, and any
questions were dealt with promptly. Everyone
was very knowledgeable and accommodating.
The end result was even better than expected
The project was one of the first to use the new
dedicated prototype area at Maple's factory in
Stockport. The architects and contractors I & H
Brown Construction were able to view real-life
examples of the bespoke perforated panels and
golden hexagon cut-outs - at actual size. The
prototypes were powder-coated in the specified
colour, and fitted to the display framework using
actual fittings - meaning that any changes to the
design or specification could be made without
it having a major impact on timings or budget

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2P1 - Ernest William Barnes FRS (1 April 1874 “ 29 November 1953) was an English mathematician and scientist who later became a liberal theologian and bishop.
He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was Master of the Temple from 1915 to 1919. He was made Bishop of Birmingham in 1924, the only bishop appointed during Ramsay MacDonald's first term in office. His modernist views, in particular objection to Reservation, led to conflict with the Anglo-Catholics in his diocese. A biography by his son, Sir John Barnes, Ahead of His Age: Bishop Barnes of Birmingham, was published in 1979.
Barnes was perhaps the best known liberal bishop of his time, identified with the modernist or broad church movement. His episcopate was marked by continual controversy.[9]
His book The Rise of Christianity (1947) attacked many Christian claims, including the Virgin Birth and the bodily resurrection of Christ. This led to calls that he should resign as a bishop. This Barnes refused to do. Earlier he had written Should Such a Faith Offend? (1927) and Scientific Theory and Religion (1933), and he was a contributor to 18 other books. His attack on Francis of Assisi as probably verminous drew a rebuke in verse from G. K. Chesterton.
He was also politically active. In 1940, he lost a libel case in which he had attacked the Cement Makers' Federation for allegedly holding up the supply of cement, for their own profit at a time of great national need, in the construction of air-raid shelters. Undaunted by this set-back, Barnes returned to his accusations on the cement ring in a speech he delivered in the House of Lords the following year.
He was an uncompromising pacifist, and spoke out against British participation in the Second World War. He also expressed eugenic views. Though a member of the Eugenic Society from 1924 until his death in 1953, it was not until after the 2nd World War that he openly argued in favour of voluntary sterilisation.

It is an impressive church, built generally in the Perpendicular style although the long, and older north transept is constructed in the Decorated style. The north transept forms the Lady Chapel and the shorter south transept is the Warburton Chapel. At the west end of the south aisle is the south porch. The entire church is crenellated. On the north side of the tower is a sculpture of Saint Christopher and on the south side one of the Blessed Virgin. It has diagonal buttresses and an octagonal south-west turret, a Tudor-arched west window, small arched ringers' windows on the north, west and south faces, a clock on west face, and two-light belfry windows with stone louvres. Its top is crenellated with eight crocketed pinnacles.

Although extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and then again following severe bomb damage in the 20th century, the main body of the Cathedral largely derives from the wardenship of James Stanley (warden 1485“1506), and is in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Stanley was also primarily responsible for commissioning the spectacular late medieval wooden furnishings, including the pulpitum, the choir stalls, and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. It is one of the Grade I listed buildings in Manchester. Since 2005 the Dean of the Cathedral has been the Very Reverend Rogers Morgan Govender.
The Cathedral has thirty 16th-century misericords, considered to be amongst the finest in Europe. It is worth noting that the misericords have a stylistic similarity to those at Ripon Cathedral and Beverley Minster “ and although Manchester's post date-these, they were probably carved by the same school at Ripon. One of the most notable is N-08, which is the earliest known mention of backgammon in the UK. A large cornfield named Acres Field, which is now St Ann's Square, became the site for St Ann's Church. The church was an impressive building and although it stood between the market and the collegiate church, both towers could be seen from all directions.
