Deansgate station stands on Whitworth Street West, close to Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop, Castlefield, the Bridgewater Canal, Manchester Central and the southern edge of the city centre. The postbox stood only a short distance from the massive Provisional IRA lorry bomb detonated on 15 June 1996 outside Marks & Spencer and the Arndale Centre. Despite the force of what was then the largest bomb explosion in mainland Britain since the Second World War, the cast-iron pillar box remained standing almost undamaged.
More than 200 people were injured in the attack, but there were no fatalities after the rapid evacuation of an estimated 75,000 to 80,000 shoppers, workers and visitors from the city centre following coded warnings. The bombing devastated large areas of Manchester's commercial core, damaging or destroying retail premises, offices and public spaces. Yet the mail contained within this postbox survived intact and was reportedly delivered as normal, adding to its reputation as an extraordinary symbol of continuity amidst chaos.
During the subsequent reconstruction of the city centre, the postbox was temporarily removed while Corporation Street and surrounding areas were redeveloped. It was later returned to its original location in November 1999 and fitted with a brass plaque commemorating its remarkable survival. The regeneration that followed transformed central Manchester, leading to the creation of modern landmarks, new retail developments, Exchange Square and a renewed confidence in the city as a destination for business, tourism and culture.

Victoria was built to serve both the Brighton and Chatham Main Lines, and has always had a split feel of being two separate stations. It became immediately popular as a London terminus, causing delays and requiring upgrades and rebuilding. It is a 902-seat opera house that hosts the annual Buxton Festival and the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, among others, as well as pantomime at Christmas, musicals and other entertainments year-round. Hosting live performances until 1927, the theatre then was used mostly as a cinema until 1976. In 1979, it was refurbished and reopened as a venue for live performance.
The Buxton Opera House was built in 1903 and designed by Frank Matcham, who designed the London Palladium, the London Coliseum and many other theatres throughout the UK. The first production at the theatre was Mrs Willoughby's Kiss. The Opera House ran as a successful theatre, receiving touring companies until 1927, when it was turned into a cinema. Silent films were shown until 1932 when the theatre was wired for sound and could present talkies. The Opera House also became the venue for an annual summer theatre festival from 1936 to 1942, two of them in conjunction with Lilian Baylis and her London-based Old Vic company. People who performed at the opera house include the actor Alec Guinness, the comedians Ken Dodd, Peter Kay, Harry Hill, Sarah Millican and John Bishop, the musical artists Howard Jones, Aled Jones, Leo Sayer and Razorlight, and the ballerina Anna Pavlova.
After the Second World War, the theatre continued to serve primarily as a cinema. The building was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1970. The Opera House gradually fell into disrepair.
In 1979, the building was restored, and an orchestra pit was added to the original Matcham design. Since then, the Opera House has been a full-time venue for stage productions, presenting approximately 450 performances per year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YRG - Buxton Town Hall was opened in 1889 on the Market Place in Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It lies in the town's central Conservation Area overlooking The Slopes. It is a Grade-II-listed building.
The building was designed in the style of a French château (with a mansard roof crested with iron railings, Venetian windows and a clocktower with a cupola) by Manchester architect William Pollard (who also designed Buxton College's Gothic-style 'new building' in 1880). After the Market Hall (designed by Henry Currey) was destroyed by a fire in September 1885, the site was selected for the new town hall. The fire brigade with the town's new fire engine was unable to control the fire started by a paraffin lamp in one of the shops in the Market Hall. A competition was held in 1886 for the design of the new town hall. William Pollard's design won the £50 prize and James Salt's local firm was selected to build it at a tender of £8,900 (Salt also built the Entertainment Stage theatre, which is now the Pavilion Arts Centre). The chairman of the governing Local Board, Edward Milligan, laid the foundation stone in June 1887 (the year of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria). The Marquess of Hartington conducted the official opening of the town hall on 26 June 1889.
The clock on the clock tower was a gift from the Duke of Devonshire's tenants in 1889, in honour of Lord Frederick Cavendish, who was stabbed to death aged 45 in the Phoenix Park Murders in Dublin in May 1882 (shortly after arriving to take up his new post as Chief Secretary for Ireland). There is a bust of Lord Cavendish (son of the 7th Duke of Devonshire) on display inside the town hall

It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. During the First World War, an air raid on the station killed 16 on site, and 146 others in nearby areas. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing and, during the 7 July 2005 bombing, seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train, just after it had departed from Liverpool Street. New platforms for the Elizabeth line opened in 2022 as part of the Crossrail project.

The Pierhead Building is part of the estate of the Senedd (Welsh Parliament
Welsh: Senedd Cymru), which also includes the Senedd building and Tŷ Hywel. The clock on the building is unofficially known as the Baby Big Ben or the Big Ben of Wales.
The building was built in 1897 and designed by the English architect William Frame. It was a replacement for the headquarters of the Bute Dock Company which burnt down in 1892. Frame's mentor was William Burges, with whom he worked on the rebuilding of Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch until Burges's death in 1881.
The Bute Dock Company was renamed the Cardiff Railway Company in 1897. A coat of arms on the building's façade bears the company's motto Wrth ddŵr a thân (by water and fire), encapsulating the elements creating the steam power which transformed Wales.
The building became the administrative office for the Port of Cardiff in 1947.
The 1897 clock mechanism, by William Potts & Sons of Leeds, was removed and replaced with an electronic motor, and auctioned off by British Rail and sold to an American collector in 1973. It was returned to Cardiff in 2005 and in 2011 was restored by Smith of Derby Group and installed as a piece of contemporary art created by the artist Marianne Forrest in Cardiff city centre.
Architecture
Incorporating a French-Gothic Renaissance theme, the Pierhead boasts details such as hexagonal chimneys, carved friezes, gargoyles, and a highly ornamental and distinctive clock tower. Its exterior is finished in glazed terracotta blocks supplied at the end of the 19th century by J. C. Edwards & Co. of Acrefair, near Ruabon in Wrexham County Borough

The church was built in 1886 to a design by Edmund Kirby at the expense of Rowland Egerton-Warburton of Arley Hall.
Architecture
It is built in red sandstone with a red tile roof, in Decorated style. Its plan is cruciform with a two-stage tower over the crossing. It has a three-window nave without aisles, a one-window chancel, an oak-framed north porch on a sandstone plinth, and a baptistry projecting from the west end. Above the baptistry is a rose window. The stained glass in the east window is by Harcourt M. Doyle, dated 1970, and that in the rose window is by Celtic Studios of Swansea, dated 1986. The organ was built in 1906 at a cost of £220 (equivalent to £30,000 in 2021), by E. Wadsworth.

The street roughly follows the line of the via praetoria of Eboracum, the Roman city, which ran between what are now St Helen's Square and York Minster.
The street appears to have lost importance in the Anglian and Jorvik period. York Minster was rebuilt in the 11th century, and stone for it was brought up the road, from a quay behind what is now York Guildhall. This appears to have brought the street back to prominence, and new building plots were laid adjoining the north-eastern part of the street. This part of the street lay in the Liberty of St Peter's, associated with the Minster, and many of its buildings belonged to the church, the whole area soon becoming built up, mostly with tenements. By 1215, there were houses for the prebends of Ampleforth, Barnby, Bramham and North Newbald
The street was known as Stonegate by 1119, probably named for stone paving, which would have been unique in the city at the time, although an alternative theory links the name to the stone hauled up to the Minster.
Because of the location of the street, it has historically been used for civic processions, from the York Guildhall to the Minster. It was also the site where three of the historic York Mystery Plays were performed. In 1570, Guy Fawkes was born at a house on the street.
Nikolaus Pevsner described the street as perhaps the most attractive [street in the city], and one of the busiest. Narrow, quite long, and with a variety of good things. Due to its popularity with tourists, the street was pedestrianised in 1974. It was repaved in York stone in 2020

It has a maritime, mineral and tourist economy. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship and, coincidentally, where his first vessel to explore the southern ocean, HMS Endeavour was built. Jet and alum were mined locally, and Whitby jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.
Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by the proximity of the high ground of the North York Moors national park and the heritage coastline and by association with the horror novel Dracula. The abbey ruin at the top of the East Cliff is the town's oldest and most prominent landmark. It is the closest port to a proposed wind farm development in the North Sea, 47 miles (76 km) from York and 22 miles (35 km) from Middlesbrough. The design shows how the company connected industrial towns, ports, seaside resorts and cross-Pennine communities before the later reorganisation of Britain's railways.
Manchester Victoria was opened in the nineteenth century and became closely associated with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The surviving tiled map is an important piece of railwayana, combining practical route information, corporate identity and decorative public art. Historic England's listing for Victoria station specifically notes the surviving interior features, including mosaic decoration and a map of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway system in tilework.
The image illustrates both transport heritage and the civic pride once invested in railway architecture. Unlike modern digital departure boards and simplified network diagrams, the tiled map presents rail geography as a permanent architectural feature. Its survival inside a working station gives passengers and visitors a direct visual link with the era of regional railway companies, steam-age travel and the commercial growth of Manchester and the wider north of England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNN586 - St Mary's Church is an Anglican parish church in Nantwich, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It has been called the Cathedral of South Cheshire and it is considered by some to be one of the finest medieval churches, not only in Cheshire, but in the whole of England. The architectural writer Raymond Richards described it as one of the great architectural treasures of Cheshire, and Alec Clifton-Taylor included it in his list of outstanding English parish churches.
The building dates from the 14th century, although a number of changes have since been made, particularly a substantial 19th-century restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church and its octagonal tower are built in red sandstone. Features of the church's interior include the lierne-vaulted ceiling of the choir, the carved stone canopies of the sedilia in the chancel, and the intricately carved wooden canopies over the choirstalls together with the 20 misericords at the back of the stalls. The Market began in 1500. The market building used today dates from 1867. There is a Market on three days a week, and there are stalls inside and out. Nantwich is a busy shopping centre with many fine food, drink and clothing retailers.
Nantwich is an ancient settlement and there were Romans here. The wich' part of the name comes from salt, which the town remains famous for. The local salt springs were good for making salt, and in the 1900s were popular for health tourists. The town still has a popular heated outdoor brine swimming pool.

It is one of the original stations of the Metropolitan Railway (MR), the world's first underground railway, opened on 10 January 1863.
The station is in Travelcard Zone 1 and is served by five lines. On the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines it is between Great Portland Street and Edgware Road. On the Metropolitan line it is between Great Portland Street and Finchley Road. On the Bakerloo line it is between Regent's Park and Marylebone, and on the Jubilee line it is between St John's Wood and Bond Street.
Location
The station has entrances on Baker Street, Chiltern Street (ticket holders only) and Marylebone Road. Nearby attractions include Regent's Park, Lord's Cricket Ground, the Sherlock Holmes Museum and Madame Tussauds.
Baker Street station is the combination of three separate stations, with several booking offices throughout its operational years. Major changes took place in 1891-93 and 191012. The first part is the Circle Line station, which has its two platforms now used by the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. They are situated on a roughly east-to-west alignment beneath Marylebone Road, spanning approximately the stretch between Upper Baker Street and Allsop Place. This was part of the original Metropolitan Railway from Bishop's Road (now Paddington (Circle and Hammersmith & City lines) station to Farringdon Street (now Farringdon) which opened on 10 January 1863.
The platforms serving the main branch of the Metropolitan line towards Harrow, Uxbridge and beyond are located within the triangle formed by Marylebone Road, Upper Baker Street and Allsop Place, following the alignment of Allsop place. This station is the second section which opened on 13 April 1868 by the Metropolitan & St. John's Wood Railway. This was later absorbed by the Metropolitan Railway, which is usually known to them as Baker Street East station.

It is a member of the Salford & Leigh deanery in the archdeaconry of Salford, diocese of Manchester. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
Leigh was in the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry until 1541 when it was transferred to the Diocese of Chester. In 1847 Leigh became the only parish in the Hundred of West Derby to be part of the new Diocese of Manchester. Leigh has had its own deanery since 1933. Before that it was part of the deanery of Eccles and prior to that Warrington.
History
St. Mary's is in the centre of Leigh by the Civic Square, which was originally the market place, next to the library and opposite the town hall. The church was mentioned in documents in the 13th century but the date of its foundation is uncertain. The first church on the site, dedicated to St Peter, was described as the Church of Westleigh in Leigh. Its dedication was changed to St Mary the Virgin at the end of the 14th century. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ4J2 - The parish of Christ Church started with the building of an infant's school when the population of Latchford grew large enough to warrant such a school. This building still exists and it is now known as Wash Lane Schoolroom. However, after the death of Thomas Greenall, and following his wishes, his family decided to build a small sandstone church of Gothic design. The church consisted of a nave and chancel with an ornamental spire and its first priest was the Reverend Richard Greenall. On Tuesday, 16th July 1861 the Bishop of Chester, the Right Rev. Dr. John Graham, consecrated the church under the name of Christ Church. One can still find a brass plate in the chancel of the church commemorating the event: To the glory of God, and in affectionate memory of the late Thomas Greenall of Wilderspool and Grappenhall this church was erected Anno Domini 1861.
Christ Church was originally a chapel of ease to the mother church of St. Wilfrid at Grappenhall and was made a parish by Order of Council on 12th March 1866 with a population of 1,031 people. The parish priest at that time was the Reverend W.R. Burgess. The Vicarage was built in 1867 on land adjoining the church bought by Thomas Greenall's sons.
In 1875-76 a gallery at the west end of the nave was removed along with the organ. A transept, organ chamber and a vestry were added on the north side of the church. An organ which originally belonged to St. Wilfrid's church was installed as well as the west tracery window and a sedilia was placed in the
Sanctuary. Stained glass windows were placed at the south side of the chancel and at the southwest end of the nave. At the beginning of September 1882 an alabaster reredos and chancel arch were added.

(Walsall) Ltd. had taken it over, and the firm was still milling there in 1973.

Head in at any hour and youíll see someone in a rumpled suit, waistcoat and trilby propping up the bar. With one difference: the figure has been dead for 43 years. It's artist LS Lowry, Samís most famous patron, immortalised in brass. A regular for many years, he often gave staff his drawings.

Architect Gareth Roberts and business partner Nico Treguer have revamped the building by adding two extra floors, a rooftop terrace and a stonking street-level restaurant/bar, a much-needed addition to the kebab shops that more commonly characterise this end of Brick Lane.
Interiors avoid the traps of steampunk junk and Edison bulb-lit bareness, instead balancing whitewashed walls and potted plants with cleverly sourced vintage elements such as a Rosso Levanto marble counter, sapphire velvet chairs in the hallways and a 50s terrazzo-patterned floor. While the rooms are compact to say the least, for a flat rate of £100 (including a welcome drink and breakfast) it's a seductive option for staycationers, solo travellers and loved-up duos who fancy travelling no further than a few flights of stairs when going from dinner to duvet.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2T4 - The City Chambers or Municipal Buildings in Glasgow, Scotland, has functioned as the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since 1996, and of preceding forms of municipal government in the city since 1889, located on the eastern side of the city's George Square. An eminent example of Victorian civic architecture, the building was constructed between 1882 and 1888 to a competition winning design by Scottish architect William Young. a native of Paisley.
Inaugurated in August 1888 by Queen Victoria, the first council meeting was held within the chambers in October 1889. The building originally had an area of 5,016 m2 (53,990 sq ft). In 1923, an extension to the east side of the building in John Street was opened and in 1984 Exchange House in George Street was completed, increasing the size of the City Chambers complex to some 14,000 m2 - Most of the interior looks like it's made from marble, but is of course alabaster and plaster-work. The exception is the one piece of pure white marble on the first floor carved in the shape of a lion. This mimics the lions that stand guard of Glasgow City Chambers in George Square.
It is considered lucky to rub the lion's nose every time you pass by.

Today's Moor Street station is a combination of the original station, opened in 1909 by the Great Western Railway as a terminus for local trains, and a newer Moor Street station with through platforms, a short distance from the original, which opened in 1987, replacing the original. The two were combined into one station in 2002, when the original was reopened and restored, and the newer station rebuilt in matching style.
Moor Street has become more important in recent years

The garden was created circa 1864 as the kitchen garden to the Walton Lea mansion house. It was designed by Edward Walters and built by George Crosfield, the eldest son of soap manufacturing pioneer Joseph Crosfield. In the early 1900s the house was bought by the Armitage family. In 1923 it was bought by the Greenall family, owners of nearby Walton Hall. The Greenall and Crosfield families were political rivals and in 1925 the Greenalls demolished the mansion leaving only the garden, cottages and associated buildings. The estate also included a fernery and rose garden that are no longer in existence. The walled garden later passed to Warrington Borough Council. It is in now managed by the Walton Lea project to benefit the community and people with disabilities.
The garden has an area of one acre with intact walls. The land slopes from the south-facing wall toward the north-facing wall.
The garden is open to the public daily. Fruit and vegetables from the garden are on sale. The garden provides work opportunities for people with disabilities

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGY9 - William Robinson purchased the Unicorn Inn from Samuel Hole on 29 September 1838. His eldest son George brewed the first Robinsons Ale there in 1849.
In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. Robinsons have acquired a number of other breweries over the years, including John Heginbotham, Stalybridge (1915)

It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. Its first building was the William Brown Library and Museum building which was completed in 1860 to the designs of John Weightman Surveyor to Liverpool Corporation, (not to be confused with his near contemporary John Grey Weightman)[1] and which it has always shared with the city's museum, now known as World Museum Liverpool. style, continued with an 8-window range of white glazed brick,
carried down to 2 storeys at the rear, which has a parallel
loading bay.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KEYN - Bawtry is a small market town and civil parish which lies where the western branch of the Roman Ermine Street crosses the River Idle in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, close to the county's border with Nottinghamshire, and meets the old course of the Great North Road. Nearby towns include Gainsborough to the east, Retford to the south south-east, Worksop to the south-west and Doncaster to the north-west. Bawtry is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The present A638 was for centuries the Great North Road, and in the 20th century the town was a notorious bottleneck, until it was bypassed in 1965. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southernmost house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.
The town's former prosperity was based on its communications, the River Idle in the days when it was a port, the Great North Road in the coaching era, and the Great Northern Railway.
Bawtry's geographical location is 53° 25' 40 North, 1° 1' West, at an elevation of around 65 feet (20 m) above sea level.
The town is located just south of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly RAF Finningley. Bawtry Hall was home to RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command during and after the Second World War, and became the Headquarters of RAF Strike Command (see RAF Bawtry). From 1989 to 2013 Bawtry Hall operated as a Christian conference centre and a base for several Christian organisations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM6264 - St George's Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is located on May Street, close to the River Lagan and the Waterfront Hall. Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) commissioned the building of St George's Market, which was built in three phases between 1890 and 1896. Before 1890 St George's Market was an open market and most likely contained a slaughterhouse and a meat market. Today it is a thriving market with 300 traders, crafters, musicians, and food vendors.
By the 1980s, St George's Market had developed into a general market and it became the last of Belfast's thriving Victorian markets. The market was pressured with increased maintenance costs and changes to hygiene regulations, among other issues, and Belfast City Council decided to source other uses for the listed building. A campaign backed by the city council, traders and the general public resulted in a Heritage Lottery Fund-backed £3.5 million refurbishment programme assisted by the Environment and Heritage Agency. Brick and stonework that had badly deteriorated was returned to good condition, and special bricks were produced in England to match the original unusually sized bricks. The fully renovated St George's Market reopened its doors on 14 May 1999.
St George's Market is primarily used as a market, however a number of other events are held at the site. These range from food festivals, art initiatives, exhibitions, charity launches, fashion shoots and live music events. Local software company Northbrook Technology hold their annual Staff Christmas Party at the venue.
The market has won a number of recent awards, including being voted Best Large Indoor Market 2014 and as one of the UK's top five markets by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2006, and winning third place in the best markets category of the Observer Food Monthly/Waitrose Awards in 2004

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM1TET - Bristol Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, is the Church of England cathedral in the city of Bristol, England. Founded in 1140 and consecrated in 1148, it was originally St Augustine's Abbey but after the Dissolution of the Monasteries it became in 1542 the seat of the newly created Bishop of Bristol and the cathedral of the new Diocese of Bristol. It is a Grade I listed building.
The eastern end of the church includes fabric from the 12th century, with the Elder Lady Chapel which was added in the early 13th century. Much of the church was rebuilt in the English Decorated Gothic style during the 14th century despite financial problems within the abbey. In the 15th century the transept and central tower were added. The nave was incomplete at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 and was demolished. In the 19th century Gothic Revival a new nave was built by George Edmund Street partially using the original plans. The western twin towers, designed by John Loughborough Pearson, were completed in 1888.
Located on College Green, the cathedral has tall Gothic windows and pinnacled skyline. The eastern end is a hall church in which the aisles are the same height as the Choir and share the Lierne vaults. The late Norman chapter house, situated south of the transept, contains some of the first uses of pointed arches in England. In addition to the cathedral's architectural features, it contains several memorials and an historic organ. Little of the original stained glass remains with some being replaced in the Victorian era and further losses during the Bristol Blitz.

It was renovated in 1864 after a fire, a year before the Grecian Chambers was completed. Such was the demand for office pace that an additional layer was added to the top of the building in 1907
the original height can be judged by the smaller building to its left. The new architect, James Hoey Craigie, made some effort was made to match the original design with elongated Greek columns holding up the baroque restaurant extension, although the twin domes at either side seem odd and out of place. The interior has been extensively remodelled to attract businesses to the luxury offices now found within the old walls.

Built in the 1890s to the plans of architect J J Burnet, the single-storey banking hall was added to the front of the existing Glasgow Savings Bank which had been designed by his father John Burnet and erected thirty years earlier. It is built to a Baroque-inspired design, with fine ornate ironwork in the main doors.
Founded in 1836, the Glasgow Savings Bank grew to be the largest of its type in the country. Various amalgamations resulted in its network of branches being included in the West of Scotland Trustee Savings Bank in 1974 and TSB Scotland in 1983. Following a stock exchange flotation in 1986, it became TSB Bank Scotland plc in 1989 and merged with Lloyds Bank in 1995.
Lloyds TSB Group quit the building in 1999. It remained unoccupied until the summer of 2002 when Emporio Armani opened a fashion showroom. Since 2003 it has been occupied by the Jigsaw fashion chain.

John Cassidy created two matching statues, in white Saravezza marble, of John Rylands and Mrs Rylands, which stand guard over the two ends of the Library's Historic Reading Room. John Rylands (1801 - 1888) occupies a prominent position at one end, and Mrs Rylands presides over the other, near to what used to be the Library's service counter. The picture above dates from 2003.
Although the statues appear as a pair, they were not conceived or commissioned together. 'John Rylands' was commissioned by Mrs Rylands in 1894 as an integral part of the library dedicated to her late husband, and has had pride of place since the building opened in 1900, whilst her own likeness was commissioned by supporters of the Library, and unveiled on 9 December 1907, a few months before her death on 4 February 1908.

The Church was built in 18489, on land given by the bishop of Winchester and the duke of Marlborough
the cost was met largely from subscriptions, and a gift from the rector Charles Jerram. The architect was Benjamin Ferrey.
The church of squared and coursed limestone with ashlar quoins and dressings and a gabled stone slate roof. There is a two-bay chancel with pointed moulded doorway and Caernarvon-arched window. The five-bay nave has offset buttresses, lancets and two-light windows in each east bay.
An organ was installed in 1860, and new choir stalls and altar rails were fitted in 1869. In 1887 the vestry was enlarged to designs by Clapton Crabb Rolfe, and in 1895 an organ by Charles Martin of Oxford replaced the earlier one.
A new pulpit was fitted in 1909 in memory of Samuel and Mary Shuffrey. It was created in the Wood Green workshop of their son Leonard Shuffrey, the leading architect and architectural designer, who is buried in the Churchyard. James Allen Shuffrey, the notable watercolour artist, and brother of Leonard Shuffrey, sang in Wood Green Church Choir as a boy.

The whole structure is faced in ceramic mosaics, pieces from local ceramic companies' products, glass beads, and tiles.
A number of themes have been incorporated into the design, including animals and plants indigenous to the area, a picture of the church, together with mouldings of heads and other features from gravestones and monuments in the churchyard, images of the traditional coal and bottle kilns that made the city famous, as well as high-tech industries, a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, whose funeral service was held at the Church, and a depiction of the Trent and Mersey Canal merging into the Sea of Galilee and then into the River Trent as it wraps round the base of the mosaic, unifying the design for the whole structure. Within this ribbon of mosaic, ammonites and different varieties of fish are depicted.
On the front of the bench, facing away from the church, are plaques depicting St Peter's Church and School, interspersed with heads, both European and Asian. The base of the seat features an image of two men in a boat, with a mast in the shape of an upside-down cross and two crossed keys (both emblems of St Peter, to whom the nearby church is dedicated).
The wildlife depicted on the right hand end of the bench includes a bat with outstretched wings, a squirrel, a rabbit, a frog, a snail, a fox, a butterfly, a robin, a blackbird, a magpie, a hedgehog and a wren.
The back of the bench celebrates the industrial heritage of Stoke on Trent. Its designs includes plaques featuring men in flat caps carrying pots to the kiln on wooden boards, bottle kilns, pit winding gear and factory chimneys. These are interspersed with smaller pieces commemorating the pottery produced in the area. Below the seat, the central design is of two cartoon-like figures in a canal barge.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952, is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of Gothic revival architecture in the world

Castle Street, one of Liverpool's most historic streets, contains many splendid buildings, mostly of Victorian vintage, and among them one of the most lavishly decorated is the former British and Foreign Marine Insurance Company Building, nos. 3-5 Castle Street at the Old Town Hall end almost on the corner of Dale Street.
It is five bays wide at ground level, with more numerous windows higher up, with projecting bay windows higher up to the left and right ends, and a modest central portico with some slight emphasis given by a projection of the bay immediately above. Higher up there are five storeys above the ground floor including the dormers are a long balcony and pointy roofs.
The terra cotta sculpture is nicely done and consists, as is often the case, of rather small embellishments so that the effect on such a large building is to give some vague impression of adornment and encrustation rather than individual sculptures which hold their own as additions to the building. The various arched windows however give rise to considerable opportunity for leafy spandrels (see this page for general introduction to spandrel sculpture), rather good corbels, birds, and to revert to the nautical theme appropriate for the building, fanciful fish, scallops, etc.

King's was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, soon after he had founded its sister college in Eton. The man responsible for the founding of the Church was Robert Yates, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he ultimately obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration and the congregation worshipped in Eccleston Barn.
The Toleration Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street, (the same site as is now Cairo Street). A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place .
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built. Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel. In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Middlewich.
History
A church on the site was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. A later church was built in the 14th century and its chancel was rebuilt in 1680 and again in 1795.[3] The present church dates from 1842 to 1844 when the body of the church was replaced, and the tower and spire were repaired, the architect being Edmund Sharpe of Lancaster. The nave was lengthened by one bay, heightened and widened, and galleries were inserted on three sides. The tower was damaged when it was struck by lightning on 16 July 1850.[3] A new tower was designed by Sharpe and his partner at the time, E. G. Paley. The chancel and transepts date from 1870 by the later partners in the practice, Paley and Austin.
Architecture
Exterior
The church is built in red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chancel with a north vestry and a south chantry chapel, and a southwest porch. The tower has an octagonal spire with three tiers of lucarnes.
Interior
In the chancel is a two-arched sedilia. The reredos contains an alabaster relief depicting The Last Supper. The monuments in the church include ones to William Tomkinson who died in 1770 by Benjamin Bromfield, to Mrs France who died in 1814 by S. and F. Franceys of Liverpool, to Mrs Harper dated 1833 by Francesco Pozzi of Florence with a relief of a mother and child, and to Frederick and Cecil France-Hayhurst who died in 1915, by Underwood. In the south aisle is a war memorial chapel designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. It contains a reredos with carvings of personifications of virtues, framed by carved friezes, and posts surmounted by angels

History
When Hamilton Square was designed in the early 19th century, a plot of land was made available for the siting of a town hall between Hamilton Street and Chester Street. Designed by local architect Christopher Ellison, the building was constructed using Scottish granite and sandstone from the now filled-in local quarry at Storeton. It was officially opened in 1887
The building consisted of a council chamber, offices, with a concert hall and function rooms known as the Assembly Rooms. Birkenhead's magistrates' court chambers are located in a separate building of the same design to the rear. The clock tower is 200 feet in height and displays four faces
the clock and five bells within were manufactured and fitted by Gillett & Co. (at a total cost of £900). After a fire in 1901, the upper part of the clock tower was rebuilt to a design by Henry Hartley. The rebuilding included a stained glass window by Gilbert P. Gamon representing Edward I's visit to Birkenhead Priory in 1277

The walled garden was built around 1830 by Warrington banker Thomas Parr to accompany a mansion house. Thomas Parr's father, Joseph Parr, founded Parr's Bank and Thomas was appointed Chairman of the bank. Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

The Victorians made the connection between unsanitary conditions and disease that the Elizabethans hadn't and developed municipal sewer systems to try to keep their cities cleaner. The problem was that they didn't have a good way of connecting individual households to the system. Non-flushing water closets could be dressed up, but their contents couldn't be taken out. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries (about the same time the sewers were built), English patents were granted for several different types of water-closet valves, but their flushing actions were pretty inefficient. The wall mounted cistern that became popular in the 1870s vastly improved the situation because it provided a large volume of water under more pressure. Water-closet bowls remained a problem, though, because their rudimentary traps didn't do a very good job of either letting waste go down the drain or keeping sewer gases out of the building. At first these bowls were made of earthenware and glazed with sometimes-elaborate designs. In 1885, Thomas Twyford built the first vitreous china toilet, inspiring competition from other notable English potteries such as Wedgwood and Doulton

American inventors were also seeking solutions to the problem of building a sanitary water closet. As early as 1875, James Henry and William Campbell patented a plunger-type water closet

The Parr Hall and Pyramid Arts Centre are located in the Cultural quarter of Warrington town centre, in Palmyra Square.
Parr Hall was designed by the local architect William Owen in 1895.
Originally it was built for the people of Warrington by Joseph Parr. Warrington Musical Society gave the first concert.
The hall has hosted concerts and organ recitals from leading orchestras and cathedral organists over the years.
The Rolling Stones performed at the venue on 25 November 1963, The Moody Blues on 1 March 1965 and The Who on 22 March and 11 October 1965 and on 14 June 1965 The Yardbirds. The band James - having sold out concerts at much larger venues - played the Parr Hall on 20 December 1991 to record a promotional video. Built between 1898 and 1900 for brewer Robert Cain & Sons to designs by Liverpool architect Walter W Thomas, the Philharmonic is known locally as The Phil. It became the first purpose-built Victorian public house to receive Grade I listed status, reflecting the exceptional survival and quality of its architecture and interior decoration. The pub stands opposite Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in the city's cultural quarter and has long served concert-goers, residents and visitors.
