Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMENF - Exterior view of the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand in central London, England. The photograph shows the grand stone facade, pointed Gothic entrance arch, arcaded upper levels and richly detailed Victorian architecture of one of the most important judicial buildings in the United Kingdom. Home to major courts of England and Wales, including parts of the High Court and Court of Appeal, the Royal Courts of Justice is both a working legal institution and one of London's most recognisable civic landmarks. Designed in an elaborate Gothic Revival style, the building stands at the western end of the Strand near the legal quarter of Temple and has long been associated with barristers, solicitors, judges, major hearings and the public face of the justice system. This image is well suited to editorial stories about the law, the courts, legal reform, notable trials, judicial independence, constitutional matters, access to justice and the administration of law in Britain. It is also commercially useful for travel, history and architecture features because it combines heritage, institutional significance and a dramatic London streetscape setting. The visible Royal Courts of Justice signage and the scale of the facade make the picture especially suitable for newspapers, magazines, textbooks, legal websites, guidebooks and documentary projects needing a strong establishing image of Britain's court system. Beyond legal reporting, the photograph also works for themes of governance, public institutions, rule of law, civic heritage, historic London buildings and Gothic Revival architecture. The upward view framed by leaves adds depth and atmosphere while keeping the emphasis on the building's imposing entrance and decorative stonework. As a stock image, it has broad use for editorial coverage of London landmarks, government buildings, legal history, public administration, heritage tourism and the continuing symbolic importance of the courts in British public life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YPX - A busy outdoor seating area at the Buxton Brewery Tap House located within the Pavilion Building at Pavilion Gardens in Buxton, Derbyshire, England. Groups of people sit at wooden benches enjoying craft beer and real ale on a warm, sunny day, with blue skies overhead and parasols providing shade. A chalkboard sign in the foreground advertises beers from Buxton Brewery, a well-known independent brewery closely associated with the Peak District and modern British craft-beer culture.
The Pavilion Building forms part of the wider Pavilion Gardens complex, a historic Edwardian leisure and events space near the centre of Buxton, a spa town renowned for its Georgian and Victorian architecture and its role as a gateway to the Peak District National Park. The scene captures contemporary British outdoor drinking culture, combining heritage surroundings with modern hospitality and tourism. The image conveys relaxation, social interaction, and seasonal enjoyment, typical of summer afternoons in English market towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YR6 - Buxton Opera House is in The Square, Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It is a 902-seat opera house that hosts the annual Buxton Festival and the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, among others, as well as pantomime at Christmas, musicals and other entertainments year-round. Hosting live performances until 1927, the theatre then was used mostly as a cinema until 1976. In 1979, it was refurbished and reopened as a venue for live performance.
The Buxton Opera House was built in 1903 and designed by Frank Matcham, who designed the London Palladium, the London Coliseum and many other theatres throughout the UK. The first production at the theatre was Mrs Willoughby's Kiss. The Opera House ran as a successful theatre, receiving touring companies until 1927, when it was turned into a cinema. Silent films were shown until 1932 when the theatre was wired for sound and could present talkies. The Opera House also became the venue for an annual summer theatre festival from 1936 to 1942, two of them in conjunction with Lilian Baylis and her London-based Old Vic company. People who performed at the opera house include the actor Alec Guinness, the comedians Ken Dodd, Peter Kay, Harry Hill, Sarah Millican and John Bishop, the musical artists Howard Jones, Aled Jones, Leo Sayer and Razorlight, and the ballerina Anna Pavlova.
After the Second World War, the theatre continued to serve primarily as a cinema. The building was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1970. The Opera House gradually fell into disrepair.
In 1979, the building was restored, and an orchestra pit was added to the original Matcham design. Since then, the Opera House has been a full-time venue for stage productions, presenting approximately 450 performances per year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP3AF - St Helens Town Hall is a municipal building in Bickerstaffe Street in St Helens, Merseyside, England. Although the town hall itself, which is the headquarters of St Helens Council, is not a listed building, there are two telephone kiosks flanking the entrance which are listed
The first town hall, which was designed in the Italianate style and featured a large hexastyle portico with piers on the ground floor supporting Corinthian order columns on the first floor, was completed in 1839.[2] It contained a large assembly hall for holding courts, concerts, balls, and public meetings as well as a lock up for holding prisoners.[3] The town hall became the headquarters of the new municipal borough of St Helens on 2 February 1868 but, after the first town hall was badly damaged in a fire in 1871, civic leaders decided to procure a new town hall on the same site.
The new town hall, which was designed in the Victorian style, was completed in 1876. The design involved an asymmetrical main frontage of twenty bays facing Bickerstaffe Street
the central section of five bays featured a flight of steps leading up to a double-height stone portico with piers on the ground floor supporting paired Corinthian order columns on the first floor and an arch with a pediment above. There was a clock tower on the left of the central section with a steeple. Internally the main rooms were an assembly hall, which had a proscenium arch, the council chamber, which was panelled, and the members' room. Stained glass windows on the main staircase depicted St Helena holding a shield which bore the coat of arms of the town
The town hall continued serve as the headquarters of the county borough of St Helens and became the local seat of government of the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens in 1974. Queen Elizabeth II visited the town hall and inspected a guard of honour in front of the town hall on 21 June 1977

YMCA Warrington has been forced to close its doors after more than 160 years in the town because it has 'no sustainable funding'.
The charity, on Winmarleigh Street, has faced repeated closure threats since financial resources were cut last year.
Generous residents and organisations were hailed after helping the organisation, which opened its doors in the town in 1855, smash its £40,000 fundraising target in 2016.
However, despite the support from across the borough, along with many grant applications, the battle has sadly been lost.
Chairman Cllr Graham Welborn praised centre manager Susan Blyth for her 'inspirational efforts' and said he wants the closure to mark a 'time to look back and celebrate the achievements' of the charity.
He added: YMCA are having to cease their work because we have no sustainable funding.
Therefore, we have had to take the decision to close at the optimum point that it is still possible to settle all our liabilities and responsibilities.
It has been a very hard and difficult decision to make.
It is with a heavy heart that we have come to this decision after reviewing all the options.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank our staff for their dedication and loyal service.
The quality of service and safety of all our users has always been our priority.
Our staff are currently providing day services from Room at the Inn.
They need time and space to do what they do best and to continue to offer care, advice and practical help.
The staff also need time to make their plans for the future and adjust to the situation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9M6E - Llandudno Pier is a Grade II* listed pier in the seaside resort of Llandudno, North Wales, United Kingdom. At 2,295 feet (700 m), the pier is the longest in Wales and the fifth longest in England and Wales. In 2005, was voted Pier of the Year 2005 by the members of the National Piers Society.
At the end of the pier is a deep-water landing stage, completely rebuilt for the third time in 1969, which is used by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for occasional excursions to Douglas, Isle of Man, and for an annual visit of the PS Waverley or the MV Balmoral preserved steamers. The June 2007 sailings of the Balmoral were rescheduled to start at Menai Bridge Pier, after it emerged that Llandudno Pier's Landing Stage was no longer safe to use. The Landing Stage was rebuilt in 2012 and the MV Balmoral called there, the first ship since 2006, on 2 July 2015. In the present day the landing stage is no longer used for steamers but has its use as a platform for anglers to fish off the end of the pier and is not accessible to the general public.
Located on the coast of North Wales between Bangor and Colwyn Bay, the pier is very unusual in that it has two entrances, one on the promenade at North Parade and the other, the original entrance, on Happy Valley Road (Which is no longer used and is locked permanently) Between the two entrances is the Grand Hotel.
The pier had its origins in a much shorter pier of just 242 feet (74 m) built on 16 wooden piles, opened in 1858 by the St George's Harbour and Railway Company
The present pier was designed by civil engineers Sir James William Brunlees (1816-92, knighted 1886) and Alexander McKerrow (1837-1920) and built by the contractor John Dixon for the Llandudno Pier Company. After the original designs were approved on 29 May 1876 by Parliament, the town's Improvement Commissioners and the Mostyn Estate, revised designs for the ornamental ironwork and elaborate kiosks were worked on by the architects Charles Henry Driver

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF8PC - Gerard Winstanley House which was formerly the towns magistrates court and police station but is now the home of a multi-arts thriving creative community.
It is a Grade II listed building dating back to around 1887 and of course, the first thing that hits you is the brickwork. The official records describe it as red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and a slate roof.
The buildings stand on Crawford Street opposite the small little garden that belongs to the Parish Church of All Saints and it really does cut a very imposing figure from a seat in that garden.
But the dramatic architecture doesn't stop there - not only do we have the amazing red brickwork and intricate dressings, but we have towers and turrets too! The spiked tower at the bottom end of Crawford Street rises high above the brickwork pointing right up to the often dark skies above.
This is where the main entrance to the courts was, its large welcoming doorway still a big feature of the facade. The symmetry and absolute craftsmanship of the building never fail to impress
These days the courts and police station have long gone, updated and replaced elsewhere in the town and everyone wondered what might happen to this magnificent building.
Would it go to rack and ruin like so many other buildings in the town, or would there be new life breathed into it, would it get a second chance?
The answer was firmly YES as the building was purchased and occupied by The Old Courts who have transformed the place and have refurbished the interior (still an ongoing project) to provide Art Galleries, a Theatre, a Live Music venue, a Cafe, a Record store, Band rehearsal rooms, Conference and Events space and even a bar.
Bailiff Bar is at the very bottom of the building around the corner from Crawford Street and on to King Street West.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NF8 - St George's Hall is a building on St George's Place, opposite Lime Street railway station in the centre of Liverpool, England. Opened in 1854, it is a Neoclassical building which contains concert halls and law courts, and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. On the east side of the hall, between it and the railway station, is St George's Plateau and on the west side are St John's Gardens. The hall is included in the William Brown Street conservation area.
In 1969 the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner expressed his opinion that it is one of the finest neo-Grecian buildings in the world, although the building is known for its use of Roman sources as well as Greek. In 2004, the hall and its surrounding area were recognised as part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site until its revocation of World Heritage status in 2021. The Liverpool Register Office and Coroner's Court have been based in the hall since 2012.
In 1838 the foundation stone was laid to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria.
A competition was announced on 5 March 1839 via an advertisement in The Times to design the hall, first prize was 250 guineas, second prize 150 guineas. By July more than eighty entries had been received, and the competition was won by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, a London architect aged 25 years, the second prize went to George Alexander of London.
Elmes died in 1847 and the work was continued by John Weightman, Corporation Surveyor, and Robert Rawlinson, structural engineer, until in 1851 Charles Cockerell was appointed architect. Cockerell was largely responsible for the decoration of the interiors. The eventual cost of the building exceeded £300,000[11] (roughly equivalent to £33,000,000 in 2019). During the 2000s a major restoration of the hall took place costing £23m and it was officially reopened on 23 April 2007 by Prince Charles. The magnificent sculpture of the exterior was by William Grinsell Nicholl.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTR45P - Victoria Hall, Saltaire (originally the Saltaire Institute) is a Grade II* listed building in the village of Saltaire, near Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, built by architects Lockwood and Mawson.
Saltaire Institute was built by the architectural firm of Lockwood and Mawson between 1867 and 1871 for the industrialist and philanthropist Sir Titus Salt. It cost £25,000. In the original design, the building contained a main hall seating 800, a lecture room, two art rooms, a laboratory, a gymnasium, a library of 8,500 books and a reading room. For use of the building, a quarterly fee was charged. This ranged downwards from 2 shillings for adult males.
Victoria Hall is a T-plan, two-storey building with a basement, constructed in ashlar, with rock-faced stone and a Welsh slate roof.
Exterior to the front, the exterior has a symmetrical, eleven-bay Italianate facade, with vermiculated quoins at ground floor level and pilaster quoins to the first floor. The central bay of the building breaks forward. On top of this bay is an elaborate square tower with pyramidal ashlar roof. Each side of the tower has a modillioned segmental pediment on an enriched entablature, supported by Corinthian columns, framing slender, round-arched windows. The central portal has double, panelled doors, fanlight, and large open segmental pediment supported on large consoles. The tympanum has a cartouche bearing the Salt family coat of arms, flanked by the carved figures of Art and Science by Thomas Milnes.
At basement level, the windows are square-headed, while at ground and first floor level the windows are round-arched and archivolted, the first floor windows being framed by fluted Corinthian colonnettes, and with carved head keystones and blind balustrade with turned balusters. There is a dentilled cornice between the ground and first floors. The modillioned cornice forms the base to a deep, panelled parapet decorated with rosettes and pedimented piers with grotesque winged beasts support

The church dates from the late 13th century with additions in the 19th century. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Nantwich. Its benefice is combined with those of St John, Doddington, and St Chad, Wybunbury. The church stands in an elevated position in the centre of the village.
History
The church is not recorded in the Domesday Book and it is thought that the first building on the site was given by Thomas de Aldelim to the priory of St Thomas at Stafford in the reign of Edward I. After the dissolution of the monasteries the advowson was granted to the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. The church dates from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. In 185556 there were additions and alterations by Lynam and Rickman
The church stands on a small mound in the centre of the village. It is built of red sandstone ashlar with a lead roof. Its plan consists of a six-bay nave with an embattled clerestory, a tower at the northwest corner of the nave, a north aisle with a chapel at its east end, a narrower south aisle, a chancel and a south porch.
The church is approached through the south porch by 26 steps arranged in a semicircle. The south wall contains a former priest's doorway which has been walled up and its steps removed. The tower has on its west face a two-light window, above which is a pair of windows and above these is a circular clock. The belfry windows have two lights and are louvred. The top is embattled with pinnacles at the four corners

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNN58A - St Mary's Church is an Anglican parish church in Nantwich, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It has been called the Cathedral of South Cheshire and it is considered by some to be one of the finest medieval churches, not only in Cheshire, but in the whole of England. The architectural writer Raymond Richards described it as one of the great architectural treasures of Cheshire, and Alec Clifton-Taylor included it in his list of outstanding English parish churches.
The building dates from the 14th century, although a number of changes have since been made, particularly a substantial 19th-century restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church and its octagonal tower are built in red sandstone. Features of the church's interior include the lierne-vaulted ceiling of the choir, the carved stone canopies of the sedilia in the chancel, and the intricately carved wooden canopies over the choirstalls together with the 20 misericords at the back of the stalls. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNN58E - The original organ of 1809 was moved from its central position in the crossing to the north transept where it was repaired and greatly enlarged at a cost of £311 (equivalent to £33,100 in 2021) by William Hill & Sons during Scott's restoration in 1859 The instrument performed badly following the move, which was attributed to the cold and dampness of its new position. Consequently, it was moved to the south transept, but it performed no better there, and in 1889 it was sold to Haydock church. The present organ was built in 1890 by Forster and Andrews. The casework of oak was designed by Thomas Bower, architect of Nantwich and the specification was approved by Dr. J.C. Bridge, organist of Chester Cathedral, who gave the opening recital on 21 May 1890.[28] It was partly rebuilt in about 1925.[29] Electric blowing apparatus and a new chamber to house it was added to the church. It was again rebuilt in 1973 by Charles Whiteley and Company, who installed electro-pneumatic action among other additions and repairs. Rushworth and Dreaper made further additions during their 1994 restoration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0F6K3 - The Pelican has been a pub in Notting Hill on All Saints Road since 1870, but was recently acquired by new owners and, following a full restoration and soft opening period, it has relaunched as a pub and dining room. Restaurateur James Gummer, along with co-owners Phil Winser and Richard Squire, and Head Chef Owen Kenworthy, have redesigned and refurbished the site to create what they describe as a place that becomes a cornerstone of the local community, not just somewhere to eat and drink.
Owen Kenworthy's background is impressively broad, ranging from The Wolseley and Sketch to Primeur and Brawn, where he was Head Chef alongside Ed Wilson when it opened in 2010. His cooking style is rustic, modern executions of classic British and European cuisine.
The focus is on the finest British produce, with sustainability also a fundamental priority, and engaging suppliers who use regenerative farming methods, where possible. Typical dishes on the dining room menu include: Raw beef with Gentleman's Relish, Ham hock with egg mayo, Potted shrimp, Onglet and shallot, and Lobster and monkfish pie with lobster head gravy. Various cuts of beef are butchered on-site, and a 5th Quarter Pie' makes use of the offal. Desserts include Lemon posset with shortbread
and Ginger Parkin and custard, made with Owen's family recipe. The pub offering is more casual with options such as Mince on toast
Welsh rarebit
Sausage roll
and Spider crab toast.
A wide selection of British beers includes Allsopp's IPA, Portobello Pilsner, and Deya. In addition to classic cocktails and a concise 40-bin wine list (glasses from £5/bottles from £25), a constantly evolving single bottle wine list is available.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1416A - The Percival Lane power station in Runcorn was built and operated by the Mersey Power Company Limited. It comprised two stations A and B commissioned in 1921 and 1941. The station supplied electricity to commercial, industrial and domestic users over a wide area of 95 square miles around the River Mersey including Widnes, Ellesmere Port and Runcorn.
History
In 1911 the Salt Union built a vacuum evaporating plant at Runcorn to produce salt from brine. Steam was generated to drive turbo-alternators. The exhaust steam from the turbines was used to evaporate brine. Only a portion of this energy was used in the salt works
the Salt Union obtained parliamentary authority to provide a public supply of electricity. This was through two Electric Lighting Orders: the Runcorn Electric Lighting Order 1910 and the Widnes Electric Lighting Order 1910, both these Orders were authorised by Parliament under the Electric Lighting Orders Confirmation (No.1) Act 1910 (10 Edw. 7 & 1 Geo. 5, c. lxxv). A new company, the Mersey Power Company Limited, was formed in 1911 to operate the public electricity supply. In 1918 the Company resolved to build a large generating station at Percival Lane, Runcorn (53°19'53N 2°45'25W) to meet the expanding demand for electricity. The company had local industrialists among its major shareholders and was able to promote and encourage the use of electricity by local industry

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC6203 - Anger over Grappenhall eyesore' site empty for 25 years
ANGER is mounting over an eyesore' building in Grappenhall which has been empty for around 25 years.
Grappenhall councillors Ryan Bate and Mike Biggin, along with residents, are growing increasingly frustrated at the condition of the Rectory site, on Church Lane.
Cllr Bate has labelled the state of the property as a disgrace'.
It is both an eyesore and a danger and has been for too long, he said.
About four years ago Warrington Borough Council (WBC), under pressure from Liberal Democrat councillors, had drawn up plans for a compulsory purchase having gone through a long series of enforcement steps.
Then at the eleventh hour the owner died.
Since then, the ownership has been going through a long and protracted probate process, perhaps deliberately so.
From what I hear, the owners had a number of similar historic properties across Cheshire and their working model seemed to be to allow them to fall into a state of disrepair.
I'm not sure what their endgame would be but could speculate.
The two Liberal Democrat councillors have also vowed to continue pressing council chief executive Steven Broomhead over the situation.
Cllr Bate added: Mike and I are in the process of asking for a further update from WBC and are asking Mr Broomhead to intervene to ensure that this is made a priority as it has been an ongoing issue for too long and no suitable solution seems to be within a satisfactory timeframe.
Town Hall chiefs have acknowledged the concerns from residents as they continue to assess the situation.
A WBC spokesman said: The Rectory has been vacant for approximately 25 years.
Its ownership has been a complex issue and we are prioritising a solution as it is unfair on the residents and visitors to this beautiful part of Grappenhall to continue to witness it in its dilapidated state.

Godfrey William Bonson, son of Abraham Bonson and Emma Radford, was born on 9 Jun 1858 in 1 Margaret Place, Lower Bland Street, Newington, Southwark, was christened on 1 Aug 1858 in Trinity Church, Newington, Southwark, died on 5 Sep 1932 in Aston, Ollerbarrow Road, Hale, Cheshire, at age 74, and was buried on 8 Sep 1932 in Hale Cemetary, Altrincham.
Altrincham Guardian 18th February 1889
'It is always an agreeable duty to have to comment upon the business activity of which many instances are to be seen just now in Altrincham. The most recent example of local enterprise is to be seen in the extension of the works of G.W. Bonson in Stamford New Road where an elaborate installation of machinery has been erected for the purposes of carpet beating. The appliances are the most perfect of their kind, and in a district where carpet beating, common and prosaic a business as it may seem, is an important industry during times of spring cleaning, the new facilities are bound to be largely used. New storage rooms have also been built adjoining Moss Lane, making the works the largest & most complete of their kind in the suburbs of Manchester.'

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J880E4 - The Jolly Angler, Ducie Street. Another Manchester pub sold and to close.
But with a bit of effort, could this classic old pub be still saved?
The Jolly Angler is to close after Christmas 2020. This place defined the hidden away pub, lost in the streets between Piccadilly Station and Great Ancoats Street. Now it's been sold.
It's a proper old Ancoats pub that would have, once upon a time, been on a street of terraced houses amidst workshops. It's a cute place, just a couple of rooms, with a bit of architectural fancy in its Ducie Street lower façade. The opening times have been as hidden away as its location, lost somewhere between Monday and Saturday. It often seemed potluck to find it open.
It's right to be sentimental about the loss of old pubs
Yet when it has been open, it's been a great experience
friendly, a laugh and with a real fire too. There have been occasional folk nights - often with a definite Irish accent. It's always very jolly although I can't remember many anglers being in, not that I asked.
The owners were one of the big Greater Manchester four trad brewers, Hydes (with the others being Robinsons, Holt and the oldest of all, Lees.) We've asked Hydes for an interview and are awaiting a response but this site and the older, often it must be said, hideous surrounding buildings, have been surrounded by Manchester city centre's expansion.
This area is ripe for development and thus the site of the Jolly Angler and those around have been plucked. Whether this is Hydes cashing in we'll have to wait and see when they come back to us. Maybe it's anything but, but we'd like to know.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7PC6 - The Briton's Protection is a historic, Grade II listed public house in Manchester, England. Various dates are given for its establishment
the pub's own website says 1806, although its bicentenary was not celebrated until 2011. In any case, it was listed in Pigot and Dean's New Directory of Manchester & Salford for 1821 and 1822.
The pub's name recalls its use as an army recruiting venue. A set of murals inside the pub commemorates the Peterloo Massacre.
The brick building, with a slate roof, was granted Grade II listed status, offering protection from unauthorised alteration or demolition, in 1990. The largely intact 1930s interior has six public rooms. Other notable architectural features include a terrazzo-tiled corridor floor, moulded ceiling, original 1930s urinals and the serving hatch through which people in the two rear rooms are served beer from the front bar.
As well as serving real ale, it is known for offering over 360 whiskies.
For many years, the pub was operated as a Tetley house, then by Punch Taverns, before being taken over in 2014 by an independent operator and refurbished. The pub was voted Best Pub in Manchester in the Pride of Manchester Awards in both 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.

In the early 1800 (1805 1808 ish) a house stood at the corner of London Road and Walton Road which was the home of Edward Fenna and his family who was the Parish Constable. Outside the house were the Parish Stocks (removed 1850). The house was called the Stone Jug. Fenna would not have had a uniform and was unpaid for the work he did, which was not a lot. He would walk the streets with a lantern at night and have a rattle for attracting attention. He did get paid expenses for duties such as relief of the poor, flogging people and putting people in the stocks, etc.
In 1864 a single storey building was built on the existing site and there was one Sergeant and one PC for the village. The area outside the Police Station (Victoria Square) was called Pigeon Bank' and belonged to the Police Station. Every year the fairground from Warrington (Silcocks) would stop at Stockton Heath on their way to Stoke. With the permission of Sgt. Norris they set up their tents, Dobbie horses (roundabouts), Coconut Shy's etc. It is recorded that one year Sgt. Norris' son who was of age' (over 12 generally) came out of the Police Station, jumped on a Dobbie Horse and broke it.
In 1911 that Police Station was closed and demolished with a new Police Station opening the following year. The dates are to be seen on the headers of the drainpipes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABY9AD - A fish'n'chip shop in London's East End has had a traditional makeover and been turned into an historic memorial to the victims of Jack the Ripperat the spot where the Victorian serial killer taunted police with a message chalked on a wall.
Scotland Yard historian Lindsay Siviter was invited by the Whitechapel Society to unveil a plaque on the wall of Happy Days restaurant in Goulston Street where the Ripper is known to have scrawled graffiti on the night of two of his killings on September 30, 1888.
The restaurant is part of an old block of flats, one of the few remaining buildings still surviving from that era.
It is built over what used to be the entrance to Wentworth Dwellings, where the Ripper dumped an apron belonging to one of his victims that night, before daubing his macabre message.
This doorway is specialits where Jack the Ripper is known to have been after the murders, Lindsay explained.
The restaurant refit by owner Michael Papastavrou includes a representation of the words the Ripper scrawled on the wall, in handwriting close to the style of the time, placed on the spot where the dwelling entrance once stood, now part of his chippie.

Built in 1875 and following a reconstruction in 1972-1974, Warrington Housing Association purchased the building in 2002.
In January 2003, the resource centre planning applications for works to the whole building were submitted, and planning permission was granted in May. In February 2004, the GATEWAY was chosen as the new name. In April 2004 WREN awarded the GATEWAY funding towards work to make the building more accessible to disable clients. Works were completed in July 2004. In June 2006, the new conference suite opened. Funding for the construction of this new suite was provided by 'ChangeUp Cheshire & Warrington' and work was commissioned by Warrington Housing Association on behalf of the GATEWAY.
As a community facility, the GATEWAY is an independent charity providing a central focus for 25+ local voluntary and statutory organisations and services to come and work together to help people in the local community. It provides a focal point for the voluntary sector, providing access to advice, support, information and opportunities for lifelong learning.
We are committed to ensuring expert, consistent and sustainable services are provided and promoting partnerships working
networking and sharing of knowledge and skills. A community Café, meeting and training rooms, a conference centre and exhibition space are available for groups or individuals to use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M475NA - The Grand Central Hall is on 35 Renshaw Street, Liverpool, England. It is now the site of the Liverpool Grand Central Hotel, Hall and Grand Bazaar Food Hall. The building is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building
Grand Central Hall was opened in 1905 as the Central Hall of the Liverpool Wesleyan Mission, replacing Renshaw Street Unitarian Chapel. Built to an Art Nouveau design by Bradshaw and Gass of Bolton, the new building had a capacity of 3,576 people,[citation needed] and was also used from its opening until at least 1944 as the New Century Picture Hall cinema. From 1933 to 1939 the hall was the home of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra while the Philharmonic Hall was rebuilt following a fire.
In 1990 the Methodists sold Central Hall. Major restoration work was undertaken in 1997/98 and from November 1998[citation needed] to around 2000 or 2001 the building became the Barcelona Bar and nightclub.
After the closure of the Quiggins Centre on School Lane in 2006, a dozen of the 30 plus traders relocated to the Grand Central Hall whilst others moved on to and around Bold Street or dissolved themselves. In early 2007, Roscoe Hall on the first floor opened with many new and diverse shops. In October 2011 a performance area opened in the domed area. Known as 'The Dome', the venue has a capacity of 1,200 and was used to host film, theatre and music events
In 2018 Grand Central Hall was taken over by local business owners, who redeveloped the Hall, basements and upper floors. The New Liverpool Grand Central integrates luxury hotels with boutique bars, live music and event spaces, a wedding hall and an assemblage of restaurants making up the food-hall, The Grand Bazaar.

The OKH, like its more famous neighbour The George Inn, can be found down one of those ancient alleyways that branch like pili from Borough High Street look for the hanging sign over the pathway. Inside, the main room looks like it's stuck in some former decade, with glossy paint finishes, peeling picture frames and a good old fashioned bar. You practically have to walk through the bar to get at the stairs, which lead up to a quirky function room with a penchant for Titanic memorabilia. Several groups use the room for monthly meetups, including the rather wonderful South East London Folklore Society. The beer choice is limited, but always well kept.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHY2 - St Mary's Church is in the village of Whitegate, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Middlewich. Its benefice is combined with that of St Peter, Little Budworth. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. The authors of the Buildings of England series state that the church is placed so happily against trees on a hillside that it makes the perfect, comforting picture of the Victorian village church
A chapel has stood on this site of the present church since the founding of the Cistercian Abbey of Vale Royal in 1277. The Cistercian were known as the white monks and the name of the village at the gate of the abbey refers to this. A reference is made in an Act of 1542 to a church at the White Gate of Vale Royal Abbey. There are documentary records relating to repairs to the church between 1602 and 1646. In 1715 the church was a wood and plaster structure in a ruinous condition. Around 1728 the church was rebuilt in brick, the aisles were widened, and the walls of the nave were raised to allow galleries to be built. In 187475 the church was rebuilt largely at the expense of Lord Delamere, the architect being John Douglas of Chester. Douglas remodelled the exterior almost completely, but retained much of the earlier internal fabric
The church is built in brick with a tiled roof. Its plan consists of a six-bay nave with aisles, a chancel and a south porch. At the west end is a small tower with an octagonal shingled spire. To the southwest is a vestry

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0N14 - St Wilfrid's Church is in the village of Davenham, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Middlewich.
History
A church on the site was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. A later church was built in the 14th century and its chancel was rebuilt in 1680 and again in 1795.[3] The present church dates from 1842 to 1844 when the body of the church was replaced, and the tower and spire were repaired, the architect being Edmund Sharpe of Lancaster. The nave was lengthened by one bay, heightened and widened, and galleries were inserted on three sides. The tower was damaged when it was struck by lightning on 16 July 1850.[3] A new tower was designed by Sharpe and his partner at the time, E. G. Paley. The chancel and transepts date from 1870 by the later partners in the practice, Paley and Austin.
Architecture
Exterior
The church is built in red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chancel with a north vestry and a south chantry chapel, and a southwest porch. The tower has an octagonal spire with three tiers of lucarnes.
Interior
In the chancel is a two-arched sedilia. The reredos contains an alabaster relief depicting The Last Supper. The monuments in the church include ones to William Tomkinson who died in 1770 by Benjamin Bromfield, to Mrs France who died in 1814 by S. and F. Franceys of Liverpool, to Mrs Harper dated 1833 by Francesco Pozzi of Florence with a relief of a mother and child, and to Frederick and Cecil France-Hayhurst who died in 1915, by Underwood. In the south aisle is a war memorial chapel designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. It contains a reredos with carvings of personifications of virtues, framed by carved friezes, and posts surmounted by angels
