Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG3PXY - Corn Exchange, Manchester is a grade II listed building in Manchester, England. The building was originally used as a corn exchange and was previously named the Corn & Produce Exchange, and subsequently The Triangle. Following the IRA bomb in 1996 it was renovated and was a modern shopping centre till 2014. The building was sold to investors and has been re-developed into a dining destination with food outlets
The first Corn Exchange built on this site in 1837 was designed by Richard Lane. This was demolished in 1897 and replaced in two sections between 1897 and 1903. Each section was designed by a different architect. Before 1837 it traded from Hanging Ditch. The Corn & Produce Exchange was the gathering spot for thousands of traders from all over the region. This continued until the economic depression of the 1920s and 1930s. Following the Second World War, trade gradually declined and the trading floor fell into disuse.
Until 1996 it was a gathering place for alternative communities and contained a large market with small stallholders selling clothes, jewellery and piercing paraphernalia, and second hand record shops
After being heavily damaged by the 1996 bomb many of these businesses were forced to move to new premises, mostly in the north of the city, where many foundered. The Corn Exchange was renovated and reopened as the Triangle Shopping Centre (because of its shape). Most of the Edwardian interior was replaced by high-class retail outlets including MUJI, a flagship Adidas store, O'Neill and Jigsaw, all of which have now closed.
In 2005, The Norwich Property Trust, the largest authorised commercial property unit trust in the UK, acquired the Triangle for £67m from American property company the Blackstone Group and its UK-based partners Milligan Retail Resorts International.
In 2012, The Triangle was relaunched as Corn Exchange, Manchester. Plans were revealed to convert the building into a food outlet and hotel. In 2014 work commenced by a demolition

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY564E - Manchester Victoria station in Manchester, England is a combined mainline railway station and Metrolink tram stop. Situated to the north of the city centre on Hunts Bank, close to Manchester Cathedral, it adjoins Manchester Arena which was constructed on part of the former station site in the 1990s. Opened in 1844 and part of the Manchester station group, Victoria is Manchester's third busiest railway station after Piccadilly and Oxford Road and the second busiest station managed by Northern after Oxford Road.
The station hosts local and regional services to destinations in Northern England, such as Blackburn, Rochdale, Bradford, Leeds, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Halifax, Wigan, Southport, Blackpool (Sundays only) and Liverpool using the original Liverpool to Manchester line. Most trains calling at Victoria are operated by Northern. TransPennine Express services call at the station from Liverpool to Newcastle/Scarborough and services towards Manchester Airport (via the Ordsall Chord) from Middlesbrough/Redcar/Newcastle.
Manchester Victoria is a major interchange for the Metrolink light rail system. Two former railway lines into the station have been converted to tram operation: the line to Bury was converted in the early 1990s, in the first phase of Metrolink construction, and the line through Oldham to Rochdale was converted during 2009“2014. In the other direction, trams switch to on-street running when they emerge from Victoria Station and continue southwards through the city centre to Piccadilly or Deansgate-Castlefield.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K11NY4 - A Manchester Arena bombing memorial detail is shown inside Manchester Victoria Station, with a black remembrance plaque on a wooden mount reading 22nd May 2017 , 22:31 and 22 , alongside the Manchester worker bee symbol fixed to a yellow brick wall. The image records a public place of remembrance for the 22 people killed in the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena after an Ariana Grande concert on 22 May 2017, as well as the many people injured, traumatised or affected by the events of that night. Victoria Station is closely connected with the Arena and became an important focus for flowers, cards, messages, artwork and public tributes in the days, months and years after the attack. The worker bee, long associated with Manchester's industrial identity, became especially powerful after the bombing as a symbol of solidarity, resilience, compassion and collective civic response. This close-up photograph is useful for sensitive editorial coverage of remembrance, terrorism, public mourning, memorial culture, the Manchester Arena inquiry, victim support, city resilience, anniversaries, transport disruption, music venue security, community solidarity and the role of ordinary public spaces in national grief. The plaque's stark date and time, the number 22 and the bee motif give the image strong symbolic value without showing mourners or private messages too closely. It can illustrate stories about Manchester Victoria Station memorials, One Love Manchester, civic remembrance, counter-terrorism, public safety, mental health support for survivors, bereaved families, commemorative anniversaries and the wider meaning of the phrase Manchester Strong. The related Glade of Light memorial, near Manchester Cathedral and Chetham's School of Music, now provides the city's formal garden of remembrance, while the Victoria Station tributes remain deeply connected to the original location and immediate aftermath. The photograph should be used with care because it refers to a recent ter

History
The facility was established by Francis Woodley Lindsay, a surgeon, in rented premises in Commercial Road as the Herefordshire and South Wales Eye and Ear Institution in 1882. It moved to permanent premises in Eign Street as the Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in 1888[1] and, after being renamed the Victoria Eye Hospital in 1923, joined the National Health Service in 1948.[2] After services transferred to the new Hereford County Hospital in 2002, the Victoria Eye Hospital closed and has since been converted into apartments

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07AC2 - Alexander Findlay founded his engineering firm in 1888. The site he chose was at Milton to the north of Motherwell, on land conveniently next to the railway.
The location of the Parkneuk Works also made sense because it had plenty of space, which was important because it was normal practice for steel structures to be initially assembled at the factory before being dismantled and transported to the client. People living in the north end of Motherwell would become used to seeing huge steel structures appear in the yards of both Findlay's and the nearby Motherwell Bridge and Engineering Company.
An early visitor to the Parkneuk Works was William Ewart Gladstone, former (and future) Prime Minister. - Built by Findlay of Motherwell. Concrete piers with ashlar cutwaters
semi-suspension central span
lattice-work towers and parapets
terracotta piers with cast-iron lamp columns. Erected by public subscription to mark Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKC2GT - The Victoria line is a London Underground line that runs between Brixton in south London and Walthamstow Central in the north-east, via the West End. It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. The southern extension to Brixton opened in 1971, and Pimlico station was added in 1972.
The Victoria line is operated using automatic train operation, but all trains have drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock replaced the original 1967 Tube Stock trains. The line serves 16 stations and all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Transport for London or National Rail services. The line, the most intensively used on the Underground, is used by over 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth-busiest tube line.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8NX68 - This mosaic, probably Victorian, is is the domed recess above the entrance to a bank on the corner of Lothian Road and Fountainbridge (the text Fountainbridge Branch runs under the mosaic). It shows two cornucopia (horns of plenty) spilling money (or maybe gold) into two vessels, around the motto Thrift is Blessing. This choice of words might suggest to customers that by depositing their money in the bank they will be rewarded with rich returns. However, it is actually a quotation from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice - Shylock says it as part of a defence of his profession of money lending.
The mosaic is made of glass smalti. The cornucopia and motto appear over a pleated cloth, with a blue background. Notice how several shades of green have been used to give the effect of the folds in the fabric.

The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by a Keolis/Amey consortium. 37.8 million passenger journeys were made on the system during 2016/17.
The network consists of seven lines which radiate from Manchester city centre to termini at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Manchester Airport and Rochdale. Metrolink has 93 stops along 57 miles (92 km) of standard-gauge track making it the largest light rail system in the United Kingdom. It consists of a mixture of on-street track shared with other traffic
reserved track sections, segregated from other traffic, and converted former railway lines. It is operated by a fleet of Bombardier Flexity Swift M5000s.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester emerged from the failure of the 1970s Picc-Vic tunnel scheme to obtain central government funding. A light-rail scheme was proposed in 1982 as the least expensive rail-based transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area. Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992, becoming the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFEA - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 when it was known formally as the Royal Victoria Hall. In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis assumed management and began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened.
It was also the name of a repertory company that was based at the theatre and formed the core of the National Theatre of Great Britain on its formation in 1963, under Laurence Olivier. The National Theatre remained at the Old Vic until new premises were constructed on the South Bank, opening in 1976. The Old Vic then became the home of Prospect Theatre Company, at that time a highly successful touring company which staged such acclaimed productions as Derek Jacobi's Hamlet. However, with the withdrawal of funding for the company by the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1980 for breaching its touring obligations, Prospect disbanded in 1981. The theatre underwent complete refurbishment in 1985. In 2003, Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company which received considerable media attention. In 2015, Matthew Warchus was appointed the new Artistic Director.
On May 26, 2022, Spacey was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the United Kingdom with four counts of sexual assault against three complainants. The alleged offenses occurred between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, it would be possible to formally charge Spacey only if he entered England or Wales, which would entail extradition if Spacey refused to do so voluntarily. Nevertheless, in a statement to Good Morning America on May 31, 2022, Spacey said that he would voluntarily appear in the U.K. as soon as can be arrange

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B0D - Clapham Junction railway station is near St John's Hill in the south-west of Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth. Although it is in Battersea, the area around the station is commonly identified as Clapham Junction.
Many routes from London's two busiest termini, London Waterloo and London Victoria, funnel through the station making it one of the busiest in Europe by number of trains using it, more than one hundred an hour outside peak periods.
Each day about 2,000 trains, most stopping, pass through the station, more than through any other station in Europe.[5] At peak times 180 trains per hour pass through of which 117 stop. It is not the busiest station by number of passengers, most of whom (about 430,000 on a weekday, of which 135,000 are at rush hours) pass through. Interchanges make some 40% of the activity and on that basis too it is the busiest station in the UK.[6]
In 2011, the station had three entrances, all with staffed ticket offices, though only the south-east entrance is open 24 hours a day. The most heavily used of the three, this leads from St John's Hill via a small indoor shopping centre, into a subway some 15 ft (4.6 m) wide that connects to the eastern ends of all platforms.
The north entrance, which has restricted opening hours, leads from Grant Road to the same subway. The subway is crowded during rush hours, with the ticket barriers at the ends are pinch points.

The National Football Museum is the UK's leading institution dedicated to the history, culture, and social impact of football. Its collections include historic trophies, memorabilia, interactive displays, and exhibitions exploring the game's development from grassroots to international competition.
Located close to Manchester Cathedral and the city's main retail and transport areas, the museum forms part of a wider cultural quarter and reflects Manchester's strong association with football at both professional and community levels. The building itself has become a recognisable landmark within the city's modern skyline.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering British sport, football culture, museums and heritage, urban regeneration, and Manchester as a cultural and sporting destination.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYG15 - Eastgate and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building

Sixteen is the fourth power of two. For this reason, 16 was used in weighing light objects in several cultures.
The British have 16 ounces in one pound
the Chinese used to have 16 liangs in one jin. In old days, weighing was done with a beam balance to make equal splits. It would be easier to split a heap of grains into sixteen equal parts through successive divisions than to split into ten parts.
Chinese Taoists did finger computation on the trigrams and hexagrams by counting the finger tips and joints of the fingers with the tip of the thumb. Each hand can count up to 16 in such manner.
The Chinese abacus uses two upper beads to represent the 5s and 5 lower beads to represent the 1s, the 7 beads can represent from a hexadecimal digit from 0 to 15 in each column.
Sixteen is the minimum age to get married with parental consent in many countries and without parental consent in Scotland. Its the legal drinking age in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal. Many bank card numbers are 16 digits long.
16+ shops are taking over Britain and mailorder bigger sizes from JD Williams and others are all the rage. They are everywhere, its all the rage - wardrobeflair.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/sexy-size-16.html

Manchester Cathedral is a medieval church in Manchester, England seat of the Bishop of Manchester. Its official name is the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George in Manchester and is located on Victoria Street in the city centre.
Although extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and then again following severe bomb damage in the 20th century, the main body of the cathedral largely derives from the wardenship of James Stanley (warden 1485“1506), and is in the Perpendicular Gothic style.
Stanley was also primarily responsible for commissioning the spectacular late medieval wooden furnishings, including the pulpitum, the choir stalls and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. It is one of fifteen Grade I listed buildings in Manchester. Since 2005 the Dean of the Cathedral has been the Very Reverend Rogers Govender.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKC2H0 - The Victoria line is a London Underground line that runs between Brixton in south London and Walthamstow Central in the north-east, via the West End.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T2H - Photo shows Busy Victoria Tube line metro train, on London Underground, capital city centre, Greater London, England, UK. The image can support editorial features on public transport, commuting, passenger information, ticketing, rail and bus infrastructure, regional connectivity, station environments and sustainable travel. Transport images like this are especially useful where operator branding, vehicle type, platform or street context is visible, because they locate policy themes in a real everyday setting rather than an abstract transport graphic. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near London, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Lighting, passenger density and weather should be checked from the image, but the subject is clearly a live transport or travel setting. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFF2 - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road.

Victoria Street curves through Edinburgh's Old Town with colourful shopfronts, steep levels and dense historic character, making it one of the city's strongest visual symbols for tourism. At dusk the street becomes useful for stories about heritage streets, independent retail, Harry Potter tourism associations, night-time economy, visitor pressure and urban conservation. Low light, dusk or night conditions add atmosphere and make the subject useful for evening economy, safety and seasonal weather contexts. As a Edinburgh subject, it can support local-history, tourism, public-service and urban-change coverage where the place is as important as the object or activity shown. The details in victoria, street, edinburgh, night give the scene a stronger commercial life, especially for editors needing authentic texture rather than a symbolic cut-out.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYF29 - Eastgate and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix.
