Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM994Y - A wide, documentary street-level view of The Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street in Edinburgh, photographed from the West Register Place area to frame the full fa??ade and the famous clock tower. The building's grand sandstone frontage, ornate roofline and central tower create an unmistakable city landmark, with the clock face clearly visible high above the main elevation. The perspective between surrounding city-centre buildings helps emphasise the Balmoral's scale and its position at one of Edinburgh's most recognisable gateways between the New Town and the Old Town.
The light suggests a cold-season day with clear winter brightness: pale blue sky, crisp edges on the stonework, and cool shadows that bring out carved details across the fa??ade. The overall mood is calm and architectural rather than crowd-focused, making the image highly versatile for editorial use where a clean, identifiable Edinburgh location is needed.
This photograph suits themes including Edinburgh tourism, luxury and heritage hospitality, iconic Scottish architecture, and city-break travel. It also works as a strong general illustration for Princes Street and central Edinburgh, with the clock tower acting as an instantly readable visual cue for the Balmoral and the wider city centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG2F - This image shows the exterior of Milnes of Rose Street, a well-known traditional pub situated on Rose Street in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town, Scotland. The photograph captures the distinctive frontage of the bar, with its ornate gold lettering reading Milnes of Rose Street mounted above large street-facing windows. Warm interior lighting is visible through the glass, creating a welcoming contrast with the darker exterior and reflecting the pub's role as a social space within the busy city centre.
Rose Street runs parallel to Princes Street and has long been associated with Edinburgh's pub culture, serving office workers, shoppers, tourists, and locals alike. Milnes is one of a number of independent and long-established bars on the street, contributing to its reputation as a lively yet traditional drinking destination within the Georgian New Town. The surrounding architecture and streetscape form part of Edinburgh's UNESCO World Heritage Site, adding cultural and historical context to the location.
The image highlights elements of contemporary urban hospitality, including visible bar fittings, hanging lights, and signage, while retaining the character of a classic Scottish city pub. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to Scottish pubs, urban nightlife, tourism, hospitality, independent businesses, and the social life of Edinburgh's city centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE0XB4 - Now the flag is set to be returned to the ownership of the community as part of a long-running campaign to allow Leithers to fly their coat of arms once again.
The Court of the Lord Lyon, the heraldic authority for Scotland, has been responsible for the historic crest since 1920.
However, Leith councillor Rob Munn revealed that Leith will once again be allowed to use the coat of arms freely in three months' time.
Councillor Munn, Deputy Lord Provost, said: When Leith amalgamated with Edinburgh, the coat of arms fell out of use and was in the care of the Lord Lyon's office. Previously the Borough Council had it. Over the past decade or so there's been discussions about getting it back.
The crest of the flag features representations of Mary and Jesus in a sailing ship, under the legend Sigillum Oppidi De Leith, which translates as the seal of the town of Leith, and above the phrase Persevere, and is believed to have been brought to the community by 11th-century French traders.
The crest can still be seen on some lampposts, and on several old buildings in Leith.
The Court of the Lord Lyon is understood to have heraldic artists currently designing a slightly different version of the flag for the handover.
Its official title will be The Arms of Leith Neighbourhood Partnership and it will be based on the Arms of the former Leith Borough Council.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3193566234 - 'Edinburgh has few secrets for me to discover. I have been visiting the place on a regular basis over the past 30+ years. I have kept a beady eye (Manc reference there), on Cressers Brush Shop, over many of those years. Usually from the Bow Bar over the way, I have to say. Maybe it did inspire JK Rowling, to write about magic wizard wands. I cannot surmise on that one. I regret the brush shop is not there today, but wish JKR well, she did good in the face of adversity.
However, Edinburgh does seem to be becoming swamped in Harry Potter Shops. I would be content just with a few more blue plaques instead TBAH.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN3D - A pig roast or hog roast is an event or gathering which involves the barbecuing of a whole pig.
Pig roasts, under a variety of names, are a common traditional celebration event in many places including the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba. It is also popular in the United States, especially in the state of Hawaii (a luau) and in the Southern United States (pig pickin'). In Southeast Asia, a pig roast is a staple among the Buddhist, and Christian communities, notably among Catholic Filipinos and Hindu Balinese people, or Buddhist Chinese people.
The tradition of the hog roast goes back millennia and is found in many cultures. There are numerous ways to roast pork, including open fire rotisserie style roasting, and caja china style box grilling. Many families traditionally have a pig roast for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
In the UK, the tradition of pig roasting, more commonly known in the UK as a hog roast, is popular on many occasions, particularly parties and celebrations. It is usually an outdoor event, and a staple meal at many show events. The tradition is to roast either on a spit, turning the pig under a flame, or in a large oven in a roasting pan
roasting pigs around 130 lbs (60 kg) in weight are common in the UK. The pig is normally roasted in a propane gas machine. The pig's skin is scored with a sharp blade and covered in water and salt to make the crackling. In ancient times, going all the way back to the Saxons, roasting a wild boar was often the centerpiece of a meal at Yuletide, with Yule being Freya's feast. The head was often the greatest delicacy, as evidenced by the survival of the Boar's Head Carol.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2P0 - VICTORIA Street with its historic architecture, elegant curve and colourful shop fronts is one of the city's most picturesque locations. In recent times however, it has been forced to ward off the threat of destruction.
Before the creation of Victoria Street and Johnston Terrace in the early 1800s, the steep, awkward incline of the old West Bow was the only feasible passage for those wishing to access the Lawnmarket and Edinburgh Castle from the west.
The old West Bow was a precipitous, narrow Z-shaped street linking the Grassmarket with Castlehill. Its path is somewhat preserved today by the steps which cut through Victoria Street towards the Upper Bow. Prior to the 19th century it was considered to be one of the most important roads in Edinburgh, despite its reputation as one of the most difficult to negotiate if travelling by carriage.
Many of the oldest buildings in the city were contained along the old West Bow. An abundance of timber-fronted houses had sprung up over the centuries, many of them resembling upside-down pyramids due to the manner in which the floors increasingly protruded out as they progressed upwards.
As such, the distance between the top floors of some of the houses on either side of the street was so little that it is said neighbours could enjoy ?the pleasure of tea drinking, without the trouble of leaving their respective abodes'.
The old West Bow was radically transformed between 1829-34 as part of town planner Thomas Hamilton's 1827 Improvement Act which was set up to provide better approaches into the Old Town from the west and south. The eventual design featured a gentle, curved link from the Grassmarket up to the newly-created George IV Bridge. It was originally named Bow Street, remaining so until 1837 when the arrival to the British throne of Queen Victoria was suitably honoured by the city.

August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival.
Morgan and West, spiffing fun! Lying, Cheating Scoundrels got rave reviews. A lovely couple of 'coves' I found them to be. Read more of a review here:
An intimate, late-night affair, Lying Cheating Scoundrels is not really a magic show in the traditional sense. With just 20 seats around a large semi-circular card table, Morgan and West recount various stories of their exploits throughout history, such as beating Charles Darwin at poker, and playing pontoon on the Titanic. The story of sudden death happy families, hitherto a closely guarded secret, must be heard to be believed.
In essence, this is an hour of watching two incredibly skilled entertainers count cards, play parlour tricks and, a lot of the time, explain exactly how they are doing it — or at least how they will tell you they did it. The rapport between the two is so effortless that the audience instantly feels relaxed and in friendly company.
An excellent campaign to their bigger stage show, this smaller performance shows the versatility of the two performers, and their immense skill. The sleight of hand on display is nothing short of remarkable, making the oldest of tricks seem as if it were brand new.
The duo will be taking this show to other festivals and, if all goes to plan, bringing it back to Edinburgh next year. Do yourself a favour, and see one of the most interesting magic shows around.
As the blub says 'Welcome to the internet home of dashing duo of deception Morgan &

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

Sixteen is the fourth power of two. For this reason, 16 was used in weighing light objects in several cultures.
The British have 16 ounces in one pound
the Chinese used to have 16 liangs in one jin. In old days, weighing was done with a beam balance to make equal splits. It would be easier to split a heap of grains into sixteen equal parts through successive divisions than to split into ten parts.
Chinese Taoists did finger computation on the trigrams and hexagrams by counting the finger tips and joints of the fingers with the tip of the thumb. Each hand can count up to 16 in such manner.
The Chinese abacus uses two upper beads to represent the 5s and 5 lower beads to represent the 1s, the 7 beads can represent from a hexadecimal digit from 0 to 15 in each column.
Sixteen is the minimum age to get married with parental consent in many countries and without parental consent in Scotland. Its the legal drinking age in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal. Many bank card numbers are 16 digits long.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4546943548 - 'One of my favourite watering holes in the city of Edinburgh. Delightfully tucked away off Princes Street and away from the rowdy bars of Rose Street. My default choice in there is Weihenstephan - 'älteste Brauerei der Welt' (lierally Dedicating Stefan - oldest brewery of the world), which is a lovely pint, in its own special tall glass. A plaque outside details its history.
The origins of the site was the Guildford Arms Hotel. This was more or less totally rteworked by Robert Macfarlane Cameron in 1898. It was modelled on the then popular victorian gin palace theme echoing the Phil in Liverpool and the Crown in Belfast among others. Most pubs were at the time male dominated and frankly dingy and possibly a little dangerous. The temperance movement is said to have encouraged the design of more luxurious pubs, particularly suitable for the fairer sex rather than just men.
The current configuration dates from 1940. However the centrepoint of the Guildford’s late Victorian opulence is the magnificent Jacobean style ceiling which can be seen in this image. A row of real ale pumps on the bar all have the logo of DM Stewart, owner since victorian days.
A grand old Thorne Brothers Mirror hangs at the end of the bar. Just below the cornice height, wood panelling conceals a hidden room: legend has that this was aparently used to store spirits and other liquor which was pumped to the room from street level. A narrow walkway
leads from this room around the inner walls to the Gallery. This gallery now provides an ideal spot for diners to marvel at the superbly decorated ceiling or gaze down at the punters in the Public Bar. Both lunch and dinner are served in the Gallery Restaurant with lunch and snacks (Chilli Cashews is my weakness when in there) also served in the Lounge &
Public Bar areas. I can vouch for the excellent range of real ales. Usually a wider selection from Scotland (including the islands) than the neighbour to the south too. Readers of The Edinburgh Evening News voted the Guildford Arms Best City Bar in 1999. If you are in town and have a spare hour or so for victorian time travel, pop in!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BE34E1 - A pig roast or hog roast is an event or gathering which involves the barbecuing of a whole pig.
Pig roasts, under a variety of names, are a common traditional celebration event in many places including the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba as well as the US state of Hawaii (a luau) and in the Deep South (pig pickin'). A pig roast is a traditional meal in the Balkan states of Serbia and Montenegro, and it can often be found on the menu of traditional taverns and bars: kafana. In Southeast Asia, a pig roast is a staple among the Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian communities, notably among Catholic Filipinos and Hindu Balinese people, or Buddhist Chinese people.
The pig is normally roasted in a gas propane machine.
