Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG7WK - Editorial close-up of a learner driver L plate on the bonnet of a black car, photographed with rain droplets across the paintwork and the front badge, grille and windscreen partly visible. The image is useful for UK motoring stories about provisional licence holders, young drivers, driving lessons, driving test delays, first cars, insurance affordability, road safety and the pressure on new motorists trying to become independent. In Great Britain, learners must display visible L plates on the front and rear of the vehicle, while Welsh learners may use D plates, so this image clearly signals supervised learner driving in England, Wales or wider UK contexts. The black car and prominent bonnet placement give the photograph a sharper performance-car feel, adding relevance to higher insurance premiums, powerful cars, parental concerns and the cost of motoring for teenagers and people in their twenties. It can also illustrate debates about long waits for practical driving test appointments, cancelled test slots, driving instructors, test centre capacity, transport needs, work access, apprenticeships and the wider social value of learning to drive. The wet bonnet, overcast reflected sky and water beading suggest rainy British weather, making the picture suitable for road safety, braking distance, visibility and cautious novice driving themes. It has strong editorial use for articles on accident risk among younger or inexperienced drivers, the transition from learner to newly qualified motorist, the expense of buying an older first car, road tax, repairs, fuel, tyres and comprehensive insurance. The image also works for consumer finance, family budgeting, personal mobility, car ownership and public policy stories where access to driving affects employment, education and social life. The simple red and white L symbol is instantly recognisable, making the photograph a clear stock image for learning to drive, driver training and new-driver safety in modern Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG7X2 - Photograph showing the side of a Virgin Media O2 service van parked on a residential street in Warrington, Cheshire, North West England. The close-up composition shows the red Virgin Media logo and large blue O2 branding on the grey van body, with a blue Mini car, terraced houses, road markings, pavements and an overcast suburban streetscape visible in the background. The image is useful for editorial coverage of UK broadband, mobile telecoms, fibre network services, cable television, customer installations, home connectivity, broadband repairs, service engineers, utilities, infrastructure and consumer communications. Virgin Media and O2 combined in 2021 to form Virgin Media O2, bringing together fixed-line broadband, TV, landline and mobile services in the UK. Corporate information describes Virgin Media O2 as bringing together gigabit broadband and 5G services, while official company records list VMED O2 UK Limited at 500 Brook Drive, Reading. The photograph can illustrate contact between telecoms providers and households, especially where broadband reliability, installation appointments, customer service, streaming quality, mobile coverage, home working and internet speeds are part of public debate. The residential setting makes it relevant to stories about digital inclusion, connected homes, street-level infrastructure, engineer call-outs, broadband competition, telecoms regulation, consumer complaints, price rises, bundled packages and maintaining networks in towns such as Warrington. The damp road surface, soft grey light and cloudy sky suggest a cool, overcast day, typical of North West England. Strong search concepts include Virgin Media O2, Virgin Media, O2, broadband provider, mobile network, telecoms van, service van, cable broadband, fibre broadband, home internet, streaming services, customer service, network engineer, residential street, Warrington, Cheshire, North West England, UK connectivity, digital infrastructure and telecommunications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9346E - Editorial image of a brightly liveried Octopus Energy van parked on a street in Latchford, Warrington, Cheshire, with the supplier's distinctive pink and blue branding and cartoon octopus graphics clearly visible. The scene captures a recognisable example of modern UK utility marketing in everyday suburban surroundings, with the commercial vehicle positioned beside local shops and housing rather than in a staged promotional setting. This makes the photograph useful for editorial and commercial themes linked to domestic electricity supply, household energy bills, retail competition in the UK utilities market, customer switching, brand visibility, corporate fleet vehicles and the public-facing image of major consumer energy suppliers. The picture also works well for wider subjects such as cost of living pressures, gas and electricity provider choice, energy sector advertising, service branding, utility reputation, local street life in north west England and the visual language used by challenger brands to appear friendlier and more approachable than older incumbents. The colourful van livery contrasts with the ordinary roadside setting, adding documentary value for stories about how energy firms promote themselves in real neighbourhoods rather than through abstract corporate imagery. With road markings, kerb edge, nearby shopfront and residential background all visible, the image has a grounded sense of place suited to news, business and consumer-interest use. It can illustrate debates about energy pricing, direct debit customers, service expectations, account switching, market share competition and the role of branding in turning an essential but unpopular household cost into something presented as modern, simple and almost playful. The photo is also relevant to searches around utility fleets, commercial vans, transport branding, Cheshire street scenes, Warrington local geography and the growing prominence of highly stylised brand identities across mainstream British

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E93472 - Wide editorial exterior view of the Tesla Centre and Certified Pre-Owned Wolverhampton at Unit 2 Mammoth Drive, showing the modern grey-clad showroom building with large Tesla lettering, glazed frontage, marked parking bays and customer vehicles outside. The scene captures a contemporary electric vehicle retail and service environment in the West Midlands, suitable for editorial use on subjects including Tesla expansion in the UK, EV retail infrastructure, certified pre-owned electric cars, automotive branding, low-emission transport, car dealership architecture and the changing geography of vehicle sales away from traditional franchised forecourts. The broad frontage, clean lines and prominent corporate signage make the image useful for stories about battery electric vehicles, direct-to-consumer car sales, automotive technology, sustainable transport policy, charging-led motoring lifestyles and the rapid normalisation of EV ownership in regional city markets. This photograph also works for commercial and documentary searches around Wolverhampton business parks, Midlands commercial property, showroom design, car retail premises, used EV sales, manufacturer-owned outlets, aftersales support, Tesla service locations and the visual identity of one of the world's most recognisable electric car brands. With overcast spring light, orderly parking layout and a practical trading setting rather than a glamour shot, the image has a grounded news and business feel that suits reporting on used car values, fleet transition, consumer confidence in second-hand EVs, transport decarbonisation and the continued build-out of specialist electric vehicle sales and service networks across England. The distant skyline, access road markings and visible stock vehicles help place the site in a real operating context rather than a staged promotional scene, which strengthens its value for editorial features about UK motoring change, regional investment and everyday EV adoption.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E3P6GK - A Chapelhouse OMODA and JAECOO dealership on Milner Street in Warrington, Cheshire, with the blue OMODA and JAECOO signage above the showroom and used European marques parked outside on the forecourt. The image shows newer Chinese automotive brands entering a familiar British motor retail setting, with Volkswagen and Renault vehicles visible in front of the dealership and a wider mix of used cars nearby. Chapelhouse lists its Warrington OMODA and JAECOO site at Milner Street, WA5 1AD, a short drive from Warrington town centre, and describes the showroom as offering new OMODA and JAECOO cars as well as used cars on site. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of Chinese car brands in the UK, automotive retail, vehicle imports, dealership networks, part exchange cars, used vehicle sales and changing consumer choice in the North West of England. OMODA promotes crossover SUVs, hybrid and electric car options, while JAECOO promotes SUV and hybrid vehicles, placing both brands in the growing market for family crossovers, plug-in hybrids and value-focused alternatives to long-established European badges. The presence of used Volkswagen and Renault cars adds useful commercial contrast, suggesting how traditional European marques and emerging Chinese challenger brands now sit together on ordinary UK forecourts. The overcast sky, grey showroom cladding, glass frontage, parked vehicles and roadside forecourt give the picture an everyday documentary quality rather than a glossy launch-event feel. It can illustrate motoring features, business news, international trade, UK consumer spending, car finance, vehicle supply, EV transition, petrol and hybrid SUV demand, automotive competition, local Warrington business, dealership expansion and the visibility of Chinese manufacturers in mainstream British car buying. The scene also suits stories about brand confidence, buyer trust and how new car brands need physical dealers to compete with familiar names.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E93468 - Editorial image of a Hafren Dyfrdwy branded utility van parked on a residential street, showing bilingual Welsh and English marketing text reading Rhagorol o'r Tap and Wonderful on Tap. The vehicle carries clear corporate water industry branding and presents a positive message about drinking water direct from the tap, while also sitting within the much tougher modern public conversation about river health, storm overflows, sewage discharges, water company accountability and customer trust. The photograph is useful for editorial themes around UK water utilities, environmental criticism, infrastructure operators, reputation management, public service messaging, consumer confidence and the contrast between upbeat branding and increasingly angry scrutiny of water sector performance. The image also works for wider topics such as utility fleets, corporate transport, local service delivery, environmental regulation, wastewater controversy, water pollution debate and the politics of essential services. Because the van livery is bilingual, the picture additionally has value for searches linked to Wales, Welsh public services, regional utility branding and communications aimed at domestic customers. The scene is documentary rather than glamorous, which strengthens its use for newspapers, magazines, campaign materials and features covering the gap between corporate image and public concern. It can illustrate debates about whether water companies have protected rivers adequately, whether regulation has been strong enough, how public anger has shifted from isolated criticism to mainstream national scandal, and how everyday branded assets such as vans become visual shorthand for wider arguments about dirty waterways, sewage spills, affordability, executive decisions and basic standards of stewardship. The ordinary street setting, plain working vehicle and practical service context help root the subject in everyday Britain rather than promotional imagery

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X9BPBA - A classic AC Cobra sports car, registration number ALQ 227A, pictured during location filming for an Apple TV+ production on Mill Lane in Liverpool city centre, England, in May 2024. The blue roadster with white racing stripes is seen navigating a narrow cobbled street while film crew members and onlookers watch nearby.
The vehicle was used as part of filming for Fountain of Youth, an Apple Original Films production directed by Guy Ritchie and starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman. Liverpool has become a popular filming location for international film and television productions, with its historic architecture and adaptable city streets frequently standing in for locations worldwide.
The presence of spectators, temporary traffic control, and production staff highlights the disruption and excitement that accompanies major film shoots in urban environments. The AC Cobra, an iconic British sports car first produced in the 1960s, adds a strong visual element to the scene, combining automotive heritage with contemporary film production.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating film and television production in the UK, Apple TV+ projects, classic cars in modern settings, Liverpool as a filming location, behind-the-scenes entertainment photography, and the use of historic vehicles in contemporary cinema.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X5K8BE - This contemporary British and Irish stock photograph captures Stop Do Not Attempt to move - Clamped Untexed vehicle in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, England, WA4 2PL. The row metadata places the subject at Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, England, WA4 2PL. The spreadsheet date indicates 06 May 2024, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows untaxed, un-taxed, enforcement, clamped, clamp, car, Stop, abandoned, with search-relevant terms including untaxed, un-taxed, enforcement, clamped, clamp, car, Stop, abandoned, DVLA, windscreen, UK, England, WA4, Grappenhall. The value lies in the combination of place, object, wording and context, giving editors something specific and grounded rather than generic filler imagery. Warrington sits between Liverpool and Manchester and is often used as a practical example of a North West town balancing commuter growth, older industrial roots, retail change, new development, road traffic, local services and community identity. The subject works for motoring, enforcement, accessibility and public-space stories, showing how rules about road tax, parking, disability access and vehicle control appear in ordinary streets and car parks. It has strong value for publishers needing authentic documentary imagery for news pages, blog articles, council reports, social media graphics, presentations, magazine features and local-history explainers. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change. For SEO and stock-photo discovery, the description deliberately supports searches around Warrington, documentary photography, editorial.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX180N - A terrace or terraced house (UK) or townhouse (US) is an architectural term for a form of medium-density housing that first started in 16th century Europe with a row of joined houses sharing side walls. In the United States and Canada these are known as row houses or row homes, commonly found in older cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Toronto.
Terrace housing can be found worldwide, though it is quite common in Europe and Latin America, and many examples can be found in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Australia.
Since the Second World War, housing redevelopment has led to many outdated or dilapidated terraces being cleared to make room for tower blocks, which occupy a much smaller area of land. Because of this land use in the inner city areas could in theory have been used to create greater accessibility, employment or recreational or leisure centres. However, sub-optimal or flawed implementation has meant that in many areas (like Manchester or the London estates) the tower blocks offered no real improvement for rehoused residents over their prior terraced houses.
In 2005 the English Heritage report Low Demand Housing and the Historic Environment found that repairing a standard Victorian terraced house over 30 years is around 60% cheaper than building and maintaining a newly built house. In a 2003 survey for Heritage Counts a team of experts contrasted a Victorian terrace with a house built after 1980, and found that:
The research demonstrated that, contrary to earlier thinking, older housing actually costs less to maintain and occupy over the long-term life of the dwelling than more modern housing. Largely due to the quality and life-span of the materials used, the Victorian terraced house proved almost £1,000 per 100 m2 cheaper to maintain and inhabit on average each year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWW5NX - The Volkswagen Type 2, known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US), Camper (UK) or Bulli (Germany), is a forward control light commercial vehicle introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model. Following and initially deriving from Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1 (Beetle), it was given the factory designation Type 2.
As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the Type 2 gave rise to forward control competitors in the United States in the 1960s, including the Ford Econoline, the Dodge A100, and the Chevrolet Corvair 95 Corvan, the latter adapting the rear-engine configuration of the Corvair car in the same manner in which the VW Type 2 adapted the Type 1 layout.
The Volkswagen Westfalia Camper was a conversion of the Volkswagen Type 2, and then, the Volkswagen Type 2 (T3), sold from the early 1950s to 2003. Volkswagen subcontracted the modifications to the company Westfalia-Werke in Rheda-Wiedenbrück.
Early Volkswagen split-windshield Kombis were built between 1950 and 1967. Production of Volkswagen camper variants continued to 2003, and was based on the Kombi, then the Vanagon, then the LT Mk 1, then the Transporter. Other coachbuilders, including Dormobile, EZ Camper, ASI/Riviera, Holdsworth, Danbury Motorcaravans, and VW Sun-Dial, also built campers based on the Transporter.

The location is Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4 1BS. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains visible signage, colour, materials, location clues and everyday street detail that make the image more specific than a generic stock photograph. It is well suited to housing-sector articles, landlord reports, resident communications, policy explainers, affordability debates, regulation, tenancy rights and the cost-of-living pressures facing households. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Fix360, 360, Fix, YourHousing, YourHousingGroup, Housing, van, repair, repairs and maintenance, maintenance, Your Housing Group, Your, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It has value for both local and national stories, especially where writers need to connect a named place or object with wider economic, social, environmental or cultural change. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastructure, consumer behaviour, community identity and documentary evidence for newsletters, blogs, policy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0E8 - A prisoner transport vehicle, informally known as a Sweat Box amongst British prisoners, is a specially designed or retrofitted vehicle, usually a van or bus, used to transport prisoners from one secure area, such as a prison or courthouse, to another. Less commonly, aircraft, railcars or vessels are also similarly fitted. These vehicles must be highly protected and may feature bars or wire mesh over the windows, bulletproof glass, segregated prisoner compartments, and additional seating for escorting officers.
Function
Due to their relatively low security and potential isolation from assistance while en route, police or additional corrections vehicles sometimes escort high-risk transports. With this in mind, vehicles may also be equipped with radio communications, global positioning units, additional restraints and weapons, and other emergency equipment. To add additional security, prisoners are typically restrained while in transport and may be physically secured to the vehicle, handcuffed while in the secured area, or a combination of both.
Prisoner transport vehicles may be operated by police services (see paddywagon), correctional services, field officers, court services, federal agencies such as the United States Marshals Service, or be contracted to private security companies. Prison buses were widely used in the late 1900s to transport prisoners, especially to state prisons across the US. They were usually quite secure and offered no way of escape for transporting prisoners.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39Y2F - The New Routemaster, originally referred to as the New Bus for London and colloquially as the Borismaster or Boris Bus, is a low-floor diesel double-decker bus operated in London, England. Designed by Heatherwick Studio and manufactured by Wrightbus, it is notable for featuring a hop-on hop-off rear open platform similar to the original Routemaster bus design but updated to meet requirements for modern buses to be fully accessible. It first entered service in February 2012.
The original AEC Routemaster was used as the standard London bus type, with a rear open platform and crewed by both a driver and conductor. After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes which operated until 2014 and 2019 respectively), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge being to introduce a new Routemaster. Following an open design competition in 2008, Wrightbus was awarded the contract to build the bus at the end of 2009, and the final design was announced in May 2010.
The design for the new double-decker bus was inspired by the original AEC Routemaster, and features three doors and two staircases to allow accessible boarding. Unlike the AEC Routemaster, the new bus has a full front end rather than the protruding, bonneted half cab design, and a rear platform with a door that can be closed, rather than being permanently open. The layout of the new bus allows it to be operated by the driver alone. The cost of each bus was £355,000 over the four-year procurement period. The last of the 1,000 New Routemasters was delivered in December 2017

The service area is 647 square kilometres with a population of around 1.5 million. As of September 2017 the service has 3,484 police officers, 1,619 police staff, 253 police community support officers, 155 designated officers and 208 special constables. The force is led by Chief Constable Serena Kennedy.
History
The service came into being in 1974 when Merseyside was created, and is a successor to the Liverpool and Bootle Constabulary (itself formed in 1967 by a merger of the Liverpool City Police with the Bootle Borough Police), along with parts of Cheshire Constabulary and Lancashire Constabulary. A proposal to merge the force with the Cheshire Constabulary to form a strategic police force was made by the Home Secretary on 6 February 2006 but later abandoned.
Merseyside maintained in 2018 it could lose 300 officers, reducing the force to 3,172. This would be a 31% reduction since 2010 when there were 4,616 officers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNFB - This image shows an electronic roadside speed indicator sign on Bellhouse Lane in Grappenhall, near Warrington in Cheshire. The sign displays the message Your Speed 37 followed by Slow Down, indicating that a passing vehicle is exceeding the 30 mph speed limit in this residential area.
Speed indicator devices of this type are widely used across the United Kingdom as part of traffic calming and road safety initiatives. Unlike enforcement cameras, they provide immediate visual feedback to drivers, highlighting excessive speed and encouraging behavioural change without issuing penalties. When drivers exceed the limit, warning messages such as Slow Down are triggered to reinforce compliance.
The photograph captures a car passing the sign with visible motion blur, emphasising the contrast between the digital warning and real-world driving behaviour. Installed on a tree-lined suburban road, the sign reflects local authority efforts to improve safety for residents, pedestrians, and other road users.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering road safety, speed management, transport policy, residential traffic issues, community safety schemes, and the use of technology to influence driver behaviour on UK roads.

Royal Mail workers poised for strikes after Easter as talks falter
CWU union lines up action as MP brands bosses' threat to put service into administration as scandalous'
Postal workers at Royal Mail are poised to stage a fresh wave of strikes after Easter as talks stalled, amid a scandalous threat by bosses to put the company into administration.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which represents about 115,000 postal workers, is close to agreeing multiple strike dates to take place later in April, the Guardian understands, in the long-running dispute between the company and union. A formal announcement of the strike dates is expected this week.
Relations between Royal Mail executives and its workforce have been strained during the months-long dispute over pay and working practices. The situation escalated last night when the Guardian revealed the company's board has threatened to put the loss-making postal service the regulated UK entity that delivers to every address in the country into a form of government-handled administration if a deal could not be agreed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9KWA - Warrington's Own Buses is a municipal bus company which operates a network of services within the Borough of Warrington and the surrounding area, including Altrincham, Leigh, Earlestown, Wigan, Halton, Bolton and Northwich.
The company previously traded as Warrington Borough Transport up until 2006 and as Network Warrington between 2006 and 2018. With the launch of the 'Cheshire Cats' brand in 2018 the company rebranded as Warrington's Own Buses.
History
Warrington Corporation Tramways started operating a network of five radial tramways from the town centre in 1902, with the first motor bus service starting in 1913. Buses replaced trams on routes starting in 1931, with the infrastructure starting to require major renewal which could not be justified economically. The last tram operated in 1935
Warrington was designated as a new town in 1968, which led to new housing estates planned in the Birchwood and Westbrook areas of town. As such, Warrington Borough Council Transport Department started operating new services to these new developments as they started to grow in the 1970s and beyond. The department also began operating new services jointly with Crosville upon the split of the old Stockport based North Western Road Car Company in 1972.
To comply with the Transport Act 1985, Warrington Borough Transport was incorporated in 1986. The company's mission was that if money could be made by operating services deemed uneconomic by other operators, then it should assume operation. This policy led to an increase in services operated as other bus companies who ran into the area decided to concentrate on their own core areas
In April 2018, the company was rebranded as Warrington's Own Buses
Warrington's Own Buses operate 96 routes across the Warrington borough, Cheshire and Greater Manchester. With 50 of them being school/college contract routes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGAYMJ - Gridserve Sustainable Energy Limited is a British company founded in 2017 to develop, own and operate critical infrastructure for sustainable energy production. Gridserve opened the UK's first all-electric car charging forecourt in 2020, and plans to open over 100 more over the following five years to charge electric vehicles with 100% renewable energy, supporting the UK's transition to carbon neutrality.
Acts as a vendor and comparison site for the leasing of electric vehicles with Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, with 100 trees planted for every car leased. Leased EV customers have the full cost of charging at Gridserve electric forecourts covered.
Installs and operates a network of electric charging hubs and home chargers. A £1bn UK-wide investment is planned to build over 100 public charging stations.
operates photovoltaic power stations, also known as solar farms, supplying renewable electricity to the National Grid. The solar modules are bifacial, allowing them to harvest energy from both sides of the panel. Land at Clay Hill, Bedfordshire serves as one of the UK's first subsidy-free solar farms, coming online in 2017 and comprising 10MW of solar PV and 6MW of energy storage. A solar farm was also constructed by GRIDSERVE for Warrington Borough Council at a site near Easingwold, York
In advance of the UK mandatory phase-out of fossil fuel vehicles by 2030[8] and anticipated mass adoption of electric vehicles, Gridserve is developing a countrywide network of customer-focused forecourts that provide ultra-fast electric vehicle charging services and associated retail. Revenue and profitability are designed to derive from electricity grid balancing services and the provision of solar energy generation. However, the company pointedly does not call them service stations
the planned forecourts are intended to serve local communities, like petrol stations do, rather than serving passing trade on motorways. Facilities include convenience stores, office 'pods'etc

The original TransBus Enviro200 design was innovative but ultimately unsuccessful, with few being sold before the introduction of the second generation Enviro200 (originally referred to as the Enviro200 Dart) revived sales for the product from 2006. It was supposed to be positioned in between a minibus and a rigid single-decker bus.
The Enviro200 was originally designed to be the replacement for the Dennis Dart SLF chassis and Alexander ALX200 and Plaxton Pointer 2 bodies. The Enviro200 MMC was launched in 2014, eventually replacing the original Enviro200 and Enviro300, which went out of production in 2018 and 2016 respectively

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NJ6RWX - The Mainz Carnival (Mainzer Fastnacht, Määnzer Fassenacht or Meenzer Fassenacht) is a months-long citywide carnival celebration in Mainz, Germany that traditionally begins on 11 November but culminates in the days before Ash Wednesday in the spring.
It is one of the largest carnival events in Germany and, along with the Cologne and Düsseldorfer carnivals, Mainz is one of the three cities prominent in the rhenish carnival tradition. Aside from the celebrations, parades, and jollity which are typical of carnival traditions in many countries, the Mainz carnival has an unusual emphasis on political and literary humor and commentary.
The tradition of carnival can be traced back to the Christian moveable feasts, where Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days (forty days not counting Sundays) before Easter. The first written records of the tradition date from the 13th and 14th century. By that time, regulations against excessive gluttony and debauchery during the days before carnival had been established.
In the beginning, the Mainz carnival was non-political. The activities of the carnivalistic organizations (MCV, Ranzengarde, Rosenmontagszug, sessions) had been watched closely by the grand ducal authorities, but generally allowed to continue
Traditionally, carnival season in Mainz begins on November 11 at 11:11, and continues through Ash Wednesday. However, the event peaks in February or March in the days leading up to Ash Wednesday.
Political commentary and caricature have become a notable part of the Mainz carnival, and especially of its parades. For example, floats during one parade in the late 1980s showed Uncle Sam and a Russian soldier climbing out of suits of armor, and portrayed Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in a bathtub.
The battle cry of the Mainz carnival, Helau, originates from Düsseldorf and was introduced in 1938 in Mainz

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK282M - Sixt has installed a life-sized replica of a Mercedes Benz and 4 3D puppets as part of a new marketing campaign in Manchester.
The Mission Impossible-influenced installation targets the 11m passengers who go through Terminal One every year, with the tagline: It's a deal. It's a steal.
Spanning 42 metres and almost 5 metres high, the permanent advertising display took 5 nights to hang from the airport's rotunda.
The car itself is a 162kg aluminium replica, with 3D printed wheels.
Per Vögerl, Managing Director of SIXT UK: We chose Manchester for our latest permanent installation because it's a vibrant and cosmopolitan city.
At SIXT we stand for creative and exceptional airport advertising. We try to stick in people's minds by advertising at extraordinary locations at airports, said Per Vögerl, Managing Director of SIXT UK.

The new car park, which was due to open
in December 2017, is a great example of
how architects and contractors can work in
partnership with Maple to transform typically
dull and utilitarian buildings into an integral and
aesthetically appealing part of the urban realm.
With its hexagon-featured golden façade, the
car park complements the other elements of
the £107m Time Square development.
The new car park is an integral and important
part of the Time Square project as it will
underpin and support the whole scheme, said
the leader of Warrington Borough Council, Terry
O'Neill.
Architect's ratings
Leach Rhodes Walker described us as excellent'
after the successful collaboration. Maple's
knowledge and craftsmanship was excellent
throughout, said LRW's lead project designer,
Ka Yin Man. From when we spoke to sales
about the commercials, to (dealing with) the
design and projects teams, the whole experience
was collaborative. In a post-project interview,
the architects' firm gave us top marks for design
services, project support, meeting deadlines
and the quality of the finished product. Added
Ka Yin: Maple were always helpful, and any
questions were dealt with promptly. Everyone
was very knowledgeable and accommodating.
The end result was even better than expected
The project was one of the first to use the new
dedicated prototype area at Maple's factory in
Stockport. The architects and contractors I & H
Brown Construction were able to view real-life
examples of the bespoke perforated panels and
golden hexagon cut-outs - at actual size. The
prototypes were powder-coated in the specified
colour, and fitted to the display framework using
actual fittings - meaning that any changes to the
design or specification could be made without
it having a major impact on timings or budget

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2N8KM2Y - Vehicle Excise Duty (VED
also known as vehicle tax, car tax, and more controversially as road tax, and formerly as a tax disc) is an annual tax that is levied as an excise duty and which must be paid for most types of powered vehicles which are to be used (or parked) on public roads in the United Kingdom. Registered vehicles that are not being used or parked on public roads and which have been taxed since 31 January 1998, must be covered by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to avoid VED. In 2016, VED generated approximately £6 billion for the Exchequer.
A vehicle tax was first introduced in Britain in 1888. In 1920, an excise duty was introduced that was specifically applied to motor vehicles
initially it was hypothecated (ring-fenced or earmarked) for road construction and paid directly into a special Road Fund. After 1937, this reservation of vehicle revenue for roads was ended, and instead the revenue was paid into the Consolidated Fund the general pot of money held by government. Since then, maintenance of the UK road network has been funded out of general taxation, of which VED is a part

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7XF5B - Safestyle UK plc, part of the Style Group UK, is a provider of PVCu double glazed windows, doors, French doors, patio sliding doors, bifolding doors and conservatories in the United Kingdom.
Established on 22 December 1992 with £2,000, in 2005 the company installed more than £100 million of replacement windows and doors. Safestyle's head office is in Bradford, West Yorkshire and the company now has more than 40 branches across the United Kingdom.
In 1996 the company expanded and set up a new division, Windowstyle, which manufactures Safestyle's double glazed PVCu windows and doors in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The company has invested more than £6.5 million in Windowstyle to date, including £2.5 million worth of state-of-the-art glass toughening and processing machinery. The facility is set in an 18-acre (73,000 m2) site, employs over 600 specialist production staff, runs 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, and produces more than 5,500 frames and 13,500 double glazed sealed units per week. It is also the biggest employer in the area.
In 2005 the company was nominated in the national G Awards, which take place annually and are open to all organisations in the glass, glazing and fenestration industries. Safestyle won the G05 Award for Best Promotional Campaign of the Year, following that in 2006 with the G06 Award for Best Customer Care.
Also in 2006, Safestyle UK received Government-backed endorsement in the TrustMark scheme, a scheme also supported by the building industry and consumer groups. TrustMark-endorsed companies must have proven ability to make improvements and repairs inside and outside homes, adhering to high standards of workmanship and customer care.
In 2007, they have continued to win industry awards, winning the G07 Installer of the Year Award, and the G07 Health and Safety Initiative Award at the annual industry G Awards.
In 2013, it was announced that Safestyle UK Ltd would be floated on the Alternative Investment Market

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3JC5N - Lothian Buses is a major bus operator based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is the largest municipal bus company in the United Kingdom: the City of Edinburgh Council (through Transport for Edinburgh) owns 91%, Midlothian Council 5%, East Lothian Council 3% and West Lothian Council 1%.
Lothian operates the majority of bus services in Edinburgh, and is a significant operator in East Lothian, Midlothian and most recently West Lothian. It operates a comprehensive night bus network, three routes to Edinburgh Airport, and owns the subsidiary companies Lothian Country, East Coast Buses, Edinburgh Bus Tours and Lothian Motorcoaches.
Lothian Buses have operated a flat-fare system since March 2006.[16] Adult and child singles and day tickets, pre-paid multiple singles and 'Ridacards' are also available, with senior citizens travelling on free travel passes in line with the rest of Scotland. As of February 2020, an adult single fare is £1.80 and a child fare costs 90p. An adult day ticket costs £4.50 and a child day ticket £2.50.
Fares are paid into a hopper, which automatically dumps the money into a vault to which the driver has no access
change is not given.
The Lothian 'Ridacard' bus pass is a pre-paid plastic smartcard giving unlimited travel on regular daytime and night bus services, as well as Edinburgh Trams services. It is purchased initially from a Transport for Edinburgh Travelshop, where the owner's picture is incorporated on the card to prevent misuse. Once purchased, the card can be placed onto an on-board reader, which reads the contactless chip in the smartcard. Cards can be credited for a weekly, 4 weekly or annual period. A warning is displayed on the last five days of validity. The card can then be topped up at Transport for Edinburgh Travelshops or PayPoint equipped retailers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K8C9NH - The Peel Group is a British infrastructure and property investment business, based in Manchester. In 2022, its Peel Land and Property estate extends to 13 million square feet (1.2 km2) of buildings, and over 33,000 acres (13,000 ha) of land and water. Peel retains minority stakes in its former ports business and MediaCityUK.
The Trafford Centre, which opened in 1998, is widely regarded as Peel's landmark development. It was sold in 2011 to Capital Shopping Centres for £1.6 billion, making it then the most expensive acquisition in British property history. £700 million of the consideration was in shares and Peel continued to buy shares in the purchaser that went into administration, eliminating share value, in 2020.
The Peel Group held a series of other substantial investments in listed businesses including Land Securities Group plc and Pinewood Shepperton plc, and in 2022 owns 14.1% of Harworth Group plc
The Peel Group was known from 1973 to 1981 as Peel Mills (Holdings) Ltd
from 1981 to 2004 as Peel Holdings plc, and then the wider organisation took its present form.
Inspired by the Peel Tower near his native Bury, Whittaker retained the name Peel Mills Ltd for his property and cotton business.
After a period on the Manchester Stock Exchange, Peel Holdings listed on the London Stock Exchange Official List in 1983. It transferred to the Alternative Investment Market in January 2000 before the Whittaker family and Olayan Group majority shareholders bought out Peel Holdings' 6.63% minority shareholders in 2004, taking the business private.
From 1971, Whittaker acquired shares in the Manchester Ship Canal Company that unlike most other British canals had not been nationalised post-World War II.
Peel sold its cotton business for £22 million to finance the purchase of more canal shares, and in 1987 acquired control. It bought out the remaining minority shareholders in 1993

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4K860 - Yelloway Motor Services was a bus and coach company based in Rochdale.
In 1902, Robert Holt commenced a parcels delivery service in the Rochdale area using a pony and cart. In 1904, Holt went into partnership with his younger brother Ernest and they established themselves as carriers trading as Messrs Holt Brothers. Additional ponies and carts were purchased, later followed by steam and motor lorries.
In an attempt to earn additional revenue, when the lorries would otherwise be idle, interchangeable charabanc bodies to enable the lorries to be converted into passenger pleasure vehicles at weekends. In May 1913 the first purpose built charabanc entered service
In March 1931, a consortium of Maurice Edwards, John Barlow and Herbert Allen purchased the business. On 9 April 1932, the company was officially renamed Yelloway Motor Services Limited
Yelloway was granted operating licences for a service to Torquay, with other operators denied. By 1937, Yelloway was providing travel facilities for passengers from West Yorkshire to destinations in South West England, connecting services being provided by Ripponden & District through Halifax, Sowerby Bridge and Ripponden to Oldham where they joined the Devon bound coaches
On 5 July 1985, Yelloway was sold to Neoplan dealer Carlton PSV Sales of Rotherham. In October 1986, following deregulation, Yelloway registered several stage carriage services in the Greater Manchester area and won contracts from the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive
Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executives cancelled contracts on several services because of poor performance. On 24 November 1988, the Yelloway was placed under the control of Crosville Motor Services, which had just been purchased by ATL Holdings, along with the remaining contract work and the name disappeared

Our investment-led, non-charging Clean Air Plan aims to tackle air pollution in a way that protects jobs, livelihoods and businesses.
Greater Manchester leaders believe that this is possible without the need for a charging Clean Air Zone.

Mr. Whippy began as a franchise of ice cream operators, but is now just the name of the soft-mix ice cream, as such, many ice cream vendors selling the soft-mix brand themselves as Mr. Whippy and stylise their vehicles and outlets as they wish. Actual franchises of the brand continue separately in Australia and New Zealand.
The name Mr. Whippy has become a generic trademark in the United Kingdom amongst consumers to refer to soft-serve ice cream in a single cone
The company originated when British businessman Dominic Facchino visited the United States and saw the Mister Softee ice cream franchise, selling soft serve ice cream from mobile ice cream vans. Unable to license the brand in the UK, Facchino set up his own Mr. Whippy franchise in Birmingham in 1958, starting with a fleet of six vans.
The company was purchased by Unilever in 1966.

to ensure ease of use and minimise the impact on pedestrians and street character. It is also
important that appropriate parking restrictions are set and enforced. In addition, local

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTJYKF - THERE is good news for electric vehicle drivers in and around Warrington, as the council has announced free electric charging at its Time Square car park and Warrington West station.
The initiative, which has been confirmed for at least the next six months, will help to support those who are making the switch from petrol and diesel to electric.
There are currently 56 charging points at the Time Square car park one of the highest number of charging points in a single location in the country with another 12 charging points available at the new Warrington West station.
The move to offering free electric vehicle charging comes after the council's climate emergency declaration in June.
The plans to encourage electric vehicle travel also support the council's Air Quality Action Plan, which aims to reduce nitrogen dioxide levels within the main, busy traffic routes leading into and around the town.
Cllr Judith Guthrie, cabinet member for environment, who drives an electric car herself, said: It's great news that I'm able to announce free charging points for electric vehicle users here in Warrington. We're committed to doing all we can to help people become more environmentally-friendly in and around the borough - more at https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/18243487.free-electric-vehicle-charging-points-warrington-west-time-square-car-parks/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JR3MRA - Blackpool Heritage Trams are a mixed fleet of restored vehicles that run on the Blackpool Tramway, which runs from Blackpool to Fleetwood on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, England. The line dates back to 1885 and is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world. It is operated by Blackpool Transport (BT) and is the last surviving first-generation tramway in the United Kingdom. Excluding museums, it is one of only a few tramways in the world to still use double-decker trams.
Most services on the line are now operated by a fleet of modern Bombardier Flexity 2 trams, but a Heritage Tram service using the traditional trams operates on Bank Holidays, select weekdays and weekends from January to December, as well as during the Blackpool Illuminations.
The Heritage fleet is a large fleet of vehicles that were mainly retained from previous generations of the town's tramway operations, as well as some from other locations. They are now operated by Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours between Pleasure Beach and North Pier as standard and can be caught at the 'Heritage Tram Tours' stops, identifiable by a green circular sign.
The Balloon cars were 27 cars built by English Electric between 1934 and 1935, the first thirteen to an open top design and the last fourteen to an enclosed design. The first Balloon car was numbered 226 but was renumbered 237 to fit the number sequence of the Balloon cars after the Boat cars. They were numbered 237263 and renumbered 700726 in 1968. All the open topped cars were enclosed during World War II, but 706 has since been restored to an open topped car. A number of them have since been rebuilt in various conditions to modernise and improve the usefulness of the cars, with 700, 707, 709, 711, 713, 718, 719, 720 and 724 added to the 'B' fleet. Balloon cars 701, 703, 704, 706, 715, 717 and 723 were retained or returned to the tramcar collection for use within the heritage fleet.

In 2008 Mitie continued its strategy through the acquisition of Catering Partnership and DW Tilley. The purchase of DW Tilley allowed Mitie to extend their roofing services nationwide. 2009 saw the acquisition of Dalkia Facilities Management for £130m[9] to bolster its Technical Facilities Management capability, and an expansion into social housing with the purchase of Environmental Property Services (EPS) for £38.5m. England
The Health and Medicines Act 1988 allows the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to provide, and charge for, various services for the purpose of income generation for the NHS. The Department of Health's guidance on Income generation in the NHS (2006) provides that income generation activities of which charging for car parking is one must be profitable and cannot use NHS funding to subsidise their costs.
NHS England has issued non-mandatory guidance on NHS patient, visitor and staff car parking management (updated October 2015). This suggests concessions for the following groups:
-disabled people
-people who attend frequent outpatient appointments
-visitors with relatives who are gravely ill
-visitors to (and carers of) people who have an extended stay in hospital

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFTMG0 - Crash at the Silverstone British F1 Grand Prix 03/07/2022 at 1st corner
The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Max Verstappen took the lead at the start from Carlos Sainz Jr., while Lewis Hamilton moved up to third. Zhou Guanyu and George Russell both experienced poor starts and were passed by Nicholas Latifi. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left in an attempt to keep position. Subsequently, Gasly and Russell made contact and caused Russell to lose control and hit Zhou. The impact flipped Zhou's car and he skid across the track upside down. His car bounced over the tyre barrier, hit the protection fence and came to a rest between the fence and tyre barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, both of whom received damage but were able to return to the pits. However, Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car, he failed to turn the engine on and was forced to retire.
Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes. Zhou was extracted from his Alfa Romeo and stretchered to an ambulance where he was taken to the race medical centre. Albon was also taken to the race medical centre but was later transferred by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for observations. Both were later released

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFTMHC - The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Max Verstappen took the lead at the start from Carlos Sainz Jr., while Lewis Hamilton moved up to third. George Russell had a bad start and was passed by Nicholas Latifi and Zhou Guanyu pulled alongside him leaving a large gap between them. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left too late to close the gap causing his left rear tyre to make contact with Gasly's right front. Gasly backed out but the impact pointed Russell's car to the left shooting him across the track and directly into the side of Zhou's car. The impact launched Zhou's car into the air where he landed upside down skidding down the track, then skipped and bounced all the way across the very long gravel trap at the end of the straightaway barely slowing but turning sideways before the inverted car suddenly dug into the gravel just short of the tire barrier still carrying so much speed and momentum that it launched so high it just glanced off the top of the barrier as it flew over it, rotating 540 degrees on its axis before hitting the catch fencing sideways facing up just a few feet from the front row of the grandstands before dropping 8 feet landing wedged into the small gap between the fence and tyre barrier where it stopped with the cockpit up against the backside of the tire barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, damaging both of their cars. Tsunoda and Ocon both returned to the pit lane for repairs, but Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car it was not running so he could not continue.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGM7AC - Signal-controlled crossings
A puffin crossing with nearside signals in Aviemore
A staggered set of pelican crossings with farside signals in Greenwich
Pelican crossings, puffin crossings and pedex crossings are all types of controlled crossing controlled by traffic signals for pedestrians and drivers. These types of crossings can be used where vehicle speeds are high, where there are a lot of vulnerable pedestrians, where vehicle flows or pedestrian flows are high or where the road layout could cause uncertainty.
At these crossings, there will be at least two signal heads facing each direction of vehicular traffic, as well as signal heads and call buttons for pedestrians. The crossings can be staggered to shorten crossing times, mainly for the benefit of vehicular traffic flow.
While pelican crossings are no longer permitted to be installed in Great Britain (they are in Northern Ireland), pedex crossings allow the continued use of farside pedestrian signals

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG4160 - Reliant Motor Company was a British car manufacturer based in Tamworth, Staffordshire, England. It was founded in 1935 and ended car production in 2002, the company had been known as Reliant Motor Company (or RMC for short) until the 1990s when it became Reliant Motors and then finally became Reliant cars LTD after production had ended of the Robin as the company was restructured to be a car import business. It is now a dormant company and the only entity left is a separate parts company created called Reliant Partsworld which produces parts for Reliant vehicles.
Reliant was a large manufacturing company that mainly produced vehicles for niche markets, such as small three-wheeled vehicles and sports cars. It was best known for the three-wheeled Reliant Robin, but produced a variety of vehicles over 60 years, including sports cars, convertibles and commercial vehicles. Approximately half a million Reliant vehicles were produced and sold in at least nine countries. For a period from the 1970s until the 1990s, Reliant was the UK's second biggest British-owned car manufacturer behind British Leyland.
To make their vehicles light, the company decided to produce car bodies from fibreglass in the mid-1950s. From this, Reliant became a pioneer in fibreglass design, techniques, and developments. Reliant also produced kitchen worktops, train bodies, and personal watercraft shells from fibreglass. In the 1970s, Reliant was the largest producer of fibreglass in Europe

The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by a merger of the Municipal Borough of Taunton, Wellington Urban District, Taunton Rural District, and Wellington Rural District.
Taunton Deane was granted borough status in 1975, perpetuating the mayoralty of Taunton.
The district was given the name of an alternative form of the Taunton Deane Hundred.
In September 2016, West Somerset and Taunton Deane councils agreed in principle to merge the districts into one (with one council) subject to consultation. The new district would not be a unitary authority, with Somerset County Council still performing its functions. In March 2018 both councils voted in favour of the merger and it came into effect on 1 April 2019, with the first elections to the new council in May 2019. The new authority will be known as Somerset West and Taunton

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9H19X - The modern combine harvester, or simply combine, is a versatile machine designed to efficiently harvest a variety of grain crops. The name derives from its combining three separate harvesting operationsreaping, threshing, and winnowinginto a single process. Among the crops harvested with a combine are wheat, oats, rye, barley, corn (maize), sorghum, soybeans, flax (linseed), sunflowers and canola. The separated straw, left lying on the field, comprises the stems and any remaining leaves of the crop with limited nutrients left in it: the straw is then either chopped, spread on the field and ploughed back in or baled for bedding and limited-feed for livestock.
Combine harvesters are one of the most economically important labour saving inventions, significantly reducing the fraction of the population engaged in agriculture

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA83 - The Zündapp Bella is a motor scooter manufactured by motorcycle manufacturer Zündapp from 1953 to 1964. Approximately 130,000 Bella scooters were sold, with engine sizes ranging from 150 cc to 200 cc.
The design of the Bella was heavily influenced by that of the Parilla Levriere, also known as the Parilla Greyhound. Along with being similar in general appearance, both designs have prominent air tunnels along the centreline of the scooter to allow fresh air to cool the engine without a fan.
Early Bella with kick starter and telescopic fork
As introduced in 1953, the Bella had a 146 cc two-stroke single cylinder engine, 12 inch wheels, 6 V electrics, a kick starter, and an undamped telescopic fork. The fuel tank was mounted under the seat.
A version of the Bella called the Suburbanette was made for the United States market from 1953 to 1954. The Suburbanette was stripped of the body panels enclosing the engine. 370 Suburbanettes were sold. An export version of the last 150cc Bella, the R154K (K for kickstarter), with higher Western (buckhorn) bars and no dynastarter, came to the United States in the later 1950s.[10]
A 197 cc (12.0 cu in) engine producing 10 hp (7.5 kW) became available in May 1954. The front suspension was later changed from a telescopic fork to an Earles-type leading link fork with a single suspension unit on left side of the fork. Later Bella scooters also had 12 V electricals powered by two 6 V batteries.[citation needed] Electric starters also became available on the Bella.
The Bella was imported into the United Kingdom by Ambassador Motorcycles, and into the United States by International Motorcycle Company.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9XYG - The Singer Gazelle name has been applied to two generations of motor cars from the British manufacturer Singer. It was positioned between the basic Hillman range and the more sporting Sunbeam versions
The Gazelle was the first Singer to be produced following the take-over of the Singer company by the Rootes Group in 1956 and was a version of the mainstream Hillman Minx differing mainly in retaining the Singer overhead cam engine. Externally the only significant difference was a restyled nose based around a traditional Singer grille. The new car was announced in late September 1956.
The body style followed by the Gazelle between 1956 and 1967 came to be known as the Audax body, with significant input from the US based Loewy design organisation, highly regarded at the time partly on account of Loewy's input to several iconic Studebaker designs.
The Gazelle was initially offered in saloon and convertible body styles. The Gazelle Series II, offered from autumn 1957, was also available as an estate car, and had optional overdrive and larger fuel tank.
The suspension was independent at the front using coil springs while at the rear was a live axle and half elliptic leaf springs. The steering gear used a worm and nut system.
As standard, the car had a bench front seat but individual seats were available as an option. To allow for the bench seat, the handbrake lever was between the seat and the door.
The convertible version had a two position hood where it could be either completely lowered or rolled back to just behind the front seats described as the coupé de ville position. All side windows could be completely lowered. To compensate for the loss of body rigidity by the removal of the roof, extra cross bracing was fitted under the car.
A car with overdrive was tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1957. It had a top speed of 78.0 mph (125.5 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 24.8 seconds. A fuel consumption of 33.5 miles per gallon.

These are a red, stationary person to indicate that it is not safe to cross, and a green, walking person to indicate that it is safe to do so. Pelican crossings also provide non-visual indication that it is safe to cross, such as a beep, vibrating button or tactile rotating cone in order to assist visually impaired pedestrians.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMWGJ - An internal combustion engine (ICE) is a heat engine in which the combustion of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit. In an internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine. The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotor or a nozzle. This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful mechanical energy.
The first commercially successful internal combustion engine was created by Étienne Lenoir around 1859[1] and the first modern internal combustion engine was created in 1876 by Nikolaus Otto (see Otto engine).
The term internal combustion engine usually refers to an engine in which combustion is intermittent, such as the more familiar four-stroke and two-stroke piston engines, along with variants, such as the six-stroke piston engine and the Wankel rotary engine. A second class of internal combustion engines use continuous combustion: gas turbines, jet engines and most rocket engines, each of which are internal combustion engines on the same principle as previously described. Firearms are also a form of internal combustion engine.
In contrast, in external combustion engines, such as steam or Stirling engines, energy is delivered to a working fluid not consisting of, mixed with, or contaminated by combustion products. Working fluids can be air, hot water, pressurized water or even liquid sodium, heated in a boiler. ICEs are usually powered by energy-dense fuels such as gasoline or diesel fuel, liquids derived from fossil fuels. While there are many stationary applications, most ICEs are used in mobile applications and are the dominant power supply for vehicles such as cars, aircraft, and boats.
Typically an ICE is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DA6238 - Rear view of a cream-coloured Trabant 601 S de luxe car displayed indoors as part of a Berlin museum or heritage exhibition about everyday life in the former German Democratic Republic. The small East German two-door saloon, instantly recognisable by its simple body shape, narrow rear window, chrome bumper, vertical tail lights, DDR oval badge and LD 11-30 registration plate, became one of the defining consumer objects of communist East Germany. Built by VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke in Zwickau, the Trabant 601 was produced from 1964 to 1990 and became the best-known version of the model, often simply called the Trabi. It used a small two-stroke engine and a lightweight Duroplast body, a plastic-like material made with cotton waste and resin, reflecting the industrial limits and resource constraints of the planned economy. For many East German families the Trabant represented mobility, independence and status, but it also symbolised shortage, long waiting lists, limited consumer choice and the technical stagnation of late DDR industry. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, lines of Trabants crossing into West Berlin became one of the most memorable images of 1989, turning the car from a modest everyday vehicle into a symbol of reunification, nostalgia and Cold War history. The photograph is useful for editorial themes including DDR history, East German transport, Berlin museums, communist-era consumer goods, Cold War Europe, Ostalgie, classic cars, motoring heritage, socialist industry, state planning, twentieth-century design and the social history of everyday objects. The indoor lighting, polished bodywork and exhibition setting suggest a museum display rather than a working street scene, with no weather visible. The rear view gives strong detail of the model badge and period identity, making the image especially relevant for illustrating the cultural afterlife of the Trabant as both a much-loved cult car and a reminder of life behind the Iron Curtain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H28RF5 - This documentary stock photograph shows Black car with Penalty Charge Notice, parking ticket. The subject gives a clear, practical editorial image for stories about parking enforcement, Penalty Charge Notices, local authority traffic management, controlled parking zones, car ownership costs and the everyday frustrations of motorists. A black car with a visible ticket can illustrate the moment when a routine journey becomes a financial penalty, making it useful for consumer advice, local news, council services, appeals, parking policy, street management and cost-of-living features. Parking enforcement is also tied to wider urban questions: how councils manage scarce kerb space, protect resident parking, keep roads clear for buses and emergency vehicles, encourage turnover for shops, support disabled access and balance income from fines against fairness and public trust. The photograph can support articles on parking apps, cashless payment, confusing signage, wardens, appeals processes, private parking firms, blue badge rules, loading restrictions, pavement parking and the relationship between car-dependent lifestyles and town-centre space. Search-friendly composite phrases include black car parking ticket, Penalty Charge Notice on windscreen, UK parking enforcement, council parking fine, motorist consumer advice, local authority traffic management and controlled parking zone. The value for image buyers is the instantly readable subject, ordinary setting and documentary style, which make it suitable for news, web, insurance, motoring, legal, council, consumer rights and personal finance content. It is also useful as a stock image for debates about whether parking enforcement is necessary street management or an unpopular revenue tool. The close, everyday nature of the subject helps communicate irritation, bureaucracy and public service contact without needing a posed person in the picture.

Two has many properties in mathematics. An integer is called even if it is divisible by 2. For integers written in a numeral system based on an even number, such as decimal and hexadecimal, divisibility by 2 is easily tested by merely looking at the last digit. If it is even, then the whole number is even. In particular, when written in the decimal system, all multiples of 2 will end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
Two is the smallest and the first prime number, and the only even one (for this reason it is sometimes called 'the oddest prime'). The next prime is three. Two and three are the only two consecutive prime numbers. 2 is the first Sophie Germain prime, the first factorial prime, the first Lucas prime, and the first Smarandache-Wellin prime
Despite being a prime, two is also a highly composite number, because it has more divisors than the number one. Two is the smallest highly composite number. The next highly composite number is four.
Vulgar fractions with 2 or 5 in the denominator do not yield infinite decimal expansions, as is the case with all other primes, because 2 and 5 are factors of ten, the decimal base.
Two is the base of the simplest numeral system in which natural numbers can be written concisely, being the length of the number a logarithm of the value of the number (whereas in base 1 the length of the number is the value of the number itself)
the binary system is used in computers.
The glyph used in the modern Western world to represent the number 2 traces its roots back to the Brahmin Indians, who wrote '2' as two horizontal lines. The modern Chinese and Japanese languages still use this method. The Gupta rotated the two lines 45 degrees, making them diagonal, and sometimes also made the top line shorter and made its bottom end curve towards the center of the bottom line.
Apparently for speed, the Nagari started making the top line more like a curve and connecting to the bottom line. The Ghubar Arabs made the bottom line completely vertical, and now the glyph looks like a dotless closing question mark. Restoring the bottom line to its original horizontal position, but keeping the top line as a curve that connects to the bottom line leads to our modern glyph.
Two is the atomic number of helium. Also the resin identification code used in recycling to identify high-density polyethylene.
Sir Jackie Stewart, who hails from Milton, unveiled this his most successful car, which has been loaned to the National Museum of Scotland for at least three years. It is dark blue with the number two. In the Tyrrell Ford he won eight championships.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4610912265 - 'This is an interesting service I came across while at the Northwich Thundersprint this weekend. If I was a bike enthusiast I think I would like to make my final journey like this. A black motorcycle hearse. In recent times, the Motorcycle plus side-hearse has become more popular. This type of hearse is a motorcycle with a special side-vehicle built to carry a casket or an urn. These hearses are often used during the funeral of motorcycle enthusiasts around the world.
Motorbikes have a higher fatality rate per unit of distance travelled when compared with cars. In 2004, figures from the UK Department for Transport indicated that motorcycles have 121 deaths or serious injuries per 100 million vehicle kilometers, compared to the corresponding figure of 2.6 for motorists. IE over 50 times more likely. This is due to the increased power and acceleration of bikes, but also size and ability of motorists to spot and make allowance for them.
This situation is helped by higher-visibility gear (not as sexy as the all-black leather iconic approach, but more practical), use of abrasion resistive gear and padding, Full face helmet (skidlid) with gloves and boots. All this gear on mopeds can look rather silly (although safe) and I remember in my first job a workmate being nicknamed 'Evil Kenevil' due to how bizarre this looked.
In the UK, for example, organizations such as the IAM and RoSPA offer advanced motorcycle rider training with the aim of reducing accident rates. There is often an added incentive to riders in the form of reduced insurance premiums.
A final quote from the Managing Director of www.MotorcycleFunerals.com Rev. Paul Sinclair. He believes we should reflect people's lifestyles in their funerals.
'No one submits a Catholic to a Muslim service or places a Liverpool fan in an Arsenal strip when they die so why should motorcycle enthusiasts be last seen in a car?'
Er.. Quite!

The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials. It was aquired by Ford in 1989 and is now part of the indian Tata steel and manufacturing group.
Jaguar cars are designed in Jaguar Land Rover's engineering centres at the Whitley plant in Coventry and at Gaydon in Warwickshire, and are manufactured in two of Jaguar Land Rover's plants
Castle Bromwich assembly plant in Birmingham and at the old Ford Halewood Body &

Two of the proudest moments in Jaguar's long history in motor sport involved winning the Le Mans 24 hours race, firstly in 1956 and again in 1957, in the hands of the little known Scottish racing team called Ecurie Ecosse whose name later went down in legendary status for twice pulling off a David v Goliath effort in the famed car killing race.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4562669870 - 'Here is Kev, fastest milkman in the (Cheshire) West (and Chester).
Rarer than the proverbial rocking horse exhaust, the British milkman is becoming an endangered species. I fear the WWF (that\u2019s the wildlife lot, not Hulk Hogans lot obviously!) will be listing Kev and his colleagues quite soon!
Originally, milk needed to be delivered to houses daily since poor refrigeration meant it would quickly spoil. The spread of the humble fridge and the aggressive discounting of supermarkets now mean that we tend to buy milk with the weekly shop and often in long lasting UHT form. Milk delivery also incurs a small cost on the price of dairy products that is increasingly difficult to justify. It also leaves delivered milk in a position where it is often prone to theft.
Kev here is in his electric milk float. Because of the relatively small power output from its electric motor, a milk float travels fairly slowly, usually around 10 to 16 miles per hour, although legend has it that some have been chipped to do up to 80 mph Operators. They are very quiet, suiting operations in residential areas during the early hours of the morning or during the night when diary products can be stealthily delivered.
In August 1967 the UK Electric Vehicle Association stated that Britain had more battery-electric vehicles on its roads than the rest of the world put together. On closer inspection these were in fact milk floats. Quite often their enormous batteries are charged all night in order to do a few hours of deliveries the following morning.
So, from an age when we were asked 'Are you getting enough (milk that is)?', we had 'Confessions of a milkman' and 1960's milk bars, Anthony Burgess his droogs and the Korova, our dominance of electric transport is also ebbing away.
Think on next time you reach for a couple of bricks of UHT in the Tesco Express.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD4W - A traditional British electric milkfloat vehicle
Milk deliveries frequently occur in the morning and it is not uncommon for milkmen to deliver products other than milk such as eggs, cream, cheese, butter, yogurt or soft drinks. Originally, milk needed to be delivered to houses daily since the lack of good refrigeration meant it would quickly spoil. The near-ubiquity of refrigerators in homes in the developed world, as well as improved packaging, has decreased the need for frequent milk delivery over the past half-century and made the trade shrink in many localities sometimes to just 3 days a week and disappear totally in others. Additionally, milk delivery incurs a small cost on the price of dairy products that is increasingly difficult to justify and leaves delivered milk in a position where it is vulnerable to theft.
Because of the relatively small power output from its electric motor, a milk float travels fairly slowly, usually around 10 to 16 miles per hour (16 to 26 km/h) although some have been modified to do up to 80 mph (130 km/h). Operators often exit their vehicle before they have completely stopped to speed up deliveries
milk floats generally have sliding doors that can be left open when moving, or may have no doors at all. They are very quiet, suiting operations in residential areas during the early hours of the morning or during the night.

Here, a panorama from a section of the WilliamsF1 Grand Prix collection and facility near Wantage, Oxon (Oxfordshire) England UK.
The team was founded and run by Sir Frank Williams and Patrick Head in 1977. Cars here cover the 1984 to 1991 seasons, mainly Honda/Judd era.
At the 1997 British Grand Prix, Canadian Jacques Villeneuve won the team's 100th race, making Williams one of only three teams in Formula One, alongside Ferrari and fellow British team McLaren achieve this.
I saw the team at the British Grand Prix in 1995 (Nigel Mansell / Keke Rosberg ) FW10B &
1997 (Nigel Mansell / Riccardo Patrese / Nelson Piquet) FW11B at Silverstone. The \u2018FW\u2019 represents the initials of team owner Frank Williams. At the 1995 GP Keke Rosberg did the first 160mph lap around the 'old' (and better!) Silverstone during qualifying. I must dig out some shots from those days. Carbon fibre composite technology had just started to be incorporated into the cars that year, with Williams finishing third in the constructors' championship. At Silverstone I watched Alain Prost in the McLaren-TAG take the race.
1987 brought the Williams Honda partnership its first and currently only drivers championship title from Nelson Piquet He scooped 76 points and won three races, while Mansell, was 15 points behind him in second place with six victories during the season. The team finished as constructors\u2019 champions for the second year running, scoring 137 points, 61 points ahead of their nearest rivals McLaren. Unfortunately Honda short sightedly ended their partnership with Williams at the end of the 1987 in favour of McLaren and Lotus. Fortunately, this year it was Mansell in the Williams I saw take the race.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MDD - Roadkill - A pheasant killed by a passing white van, A556 Chester to Manchester road. Cheshire , England, GB, United Kingdom UK.
Roadkill cuisine is preparing and eating roadkill, animals hit by vehicles and found along roads.
It is a practice engaged in by a small subculture in the United States, Southern Canada, the United Kingdom and other Western countries as well as in other parts of the world. It is also a subject of humor and urban legend.
Large animals including deer, moose, bear and elk are frequently struck in some parts of the United States, as well as smaller animals such as armadillos, raccoons, skunks and birds. Fresh kill is preferred and worms are a concern, so the kill is typically well cooked. Advantages of the roadkill diet, apart from its low cost, are that the animals that roadkill scavengers eat are naturally high in vitamins and proteins with lean meat and little saturated fat, and generally free of additives and drugs.
Almost 1.5 million deer are hit by vehicles each year in the US. If the animal is not obviously suffering from disease, the meat is no different from that obtained by hunting. The practice of eating roadkill is legal, and even encouraged in some jurisdictions, while it is tightly controlled or restricted in other areas. Roadkill eating is considered unglamorous and mocked in pop culture, as it is often associated with stereotypes of rednecks and uncouth persons
