This delightful, intimate space is entered from the north choir aisle and is chiefly noted for it's beautiful ceiling, though it also contains two fine Arts & Crafts stained glass windows with historical vignettes by Bromsgrove Guild artist A.J.Davies, c1923.
Hereford Cathedral is a fascinating place, not one of largest cathedrals or considered amongst the most architecturally significant, but one of the most interesting and rewarding nonetheless. It follows the usual cruciform plan for large churches but here the nave is the longest limb, the choir being relatively short for a cathedral, though the church extends further eastwards in the fine retrochoir and lady chapel. there are an eastern pair of transepts too, though here they do not rise above aisle roof level.
The central tower dominates the small city's skyline, but much less today than it once did, for originally it was crowned by a tall lead spire, and in addition there was a similar, slightly smaller tower at the west end (without a spire) thus the building's profile was very different to what we see today. Sadly this fine building has suffered several tragedies in it's history, the greatest of which was in 1786, when the west tower suddenly collapsed following an earth tremor, taking much of the nave with it. The architect chosen for the reconstruction was the notorious James Wyatt, who demolished all the remaining upper sections of the nave and substituted them with his own rather bland interpretation of Gothic. He also shortened the nave by one bay and built a rather mean west facade without rebuilding the west tower (the main tower also lost it's spire around this time). The present west facade is a more exuberant rebuilding by John Oldrid Scott from 1902-8.
The cathedral has generally been heavily restored throughout the 19th century

In 1554 part of it became a draper's shop, owned by the Byrom family, and the writer John Byrom was born there in 1692. The building had a third storey added to it in the 17th century. In 1830 the building became a licensed public house, known as the Vintners Arms, and later the Kenyon Vaults. By 1865, the ground floor of the building was known as the Wellington Inn, while the upper floors were used by makers of mathematical and optical instruments. Later, in 1897, the upper floors were used as a fishing tackle shop, known as Ye Olde Fyshing Tackle Shoppe.
In the 1970s the Old Shambles was underpinned with a concrete raft and raised by 1.4 metres (55 in) designed by draughtsman Fred Kennedy, to fit in with the development of the Arndale Centre
the Inn was reopened in 1981. It was damaged in the 1996 Manchester bombing, and was reopened in February 1997, with costs of ?œ500,000 paid to repair the damage. However, in preparation for the city's development in the bomb's aftermath, it was decided that the building, alongside its neighbour Sinclair's Oyster Bar, should be dismantled and rebuilt 300 metres (980 ft) towards the cathedral to form Shambles Square. The move was completed by November 1999, when the pub reopened

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE54XK - The Working Men's Club and Institute Union (CIU or C&IU) is a voluntary association of private members' clubs in Great Britain & Northern Ireland, with about 1,800 associate clubs. One club in the Republic of Ireland, the City of Dublin Working Men's Club is also affiliated. Most social clubs are affiliated to the CIU.
They do not have to be working men's clubs, although most are. There are many village clubs, Royal British Legions, Labour Clubs, Liberal Clubs, and various other clubs involved. A member of one CIU-affiliated club is entitled to use the facilities of all other CIU clubs, although they will only be entitled to vote in committee elections in clubs where they are full members.
The CIU has two main purposes: to provide a voice at national level for working men's clubs and social clubs, and to provide discounted products and services for its members.
Until 2004, the CIU had its own beer brewed by the Federation brewery in Dunston, Tyne and Wear. Although CIU-affiliated clubs do still receive discounted beer, these discounts are largely passed on to the members, and Federation beer will generally be cheaper than beer available in local pubs. The brewery was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle in 2004 and now brews Newcastle Brown Ale.
Together with other club organisations such as the Royal British Legion, the Association of Conservative Clubs, the National Union of Liberal Clubs and the National Union of Labour and Socialist Clubs, the CIU is part of CORCA (Confederation of Registered Club Associations) which lobbies Parliament on behalf of clubs. This group was active in the debate about smoking: as most clubs are known for working men who like to drink and smoke (in many cases without any women in the bar), there is some concern about the future prospects of clubs.
The CIU holds a national congress every year and as part of its activities runs convalescent homes. In many ways, it could be said to be the oldest surviving friendly society

The Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Tewkesbury, in the English county of Gloucestershire, is the second largest parish church in the country and a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and has probably the largest Romanesque crossing tower in Europe.
In the 10th century the religious foundation at Tewkesbury became a priory subordinate to the Benedictine Cranbourne Abbey in Dorset. In 1087, William the Conqueror gave the manor of Tewkesbury to his cousin, Robert Fitzhamon, who, with Giraldus, Abbot of Cranbourne, founded the present abbey in 1092. Building of the present Abbey church did not start until 1102, employing Caen stone imported from Normandy and floated up the Severn.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the people of Tewkesbury saved the abbey from destruction in 1539: Insisting it was their parish church, which they had the right to keep, they bought it from King Henry VIII for the value of its bells and lead roof which would have been salvaged and melted down, leaving the structure a roofless ruin. The price came to \u00a3453 (\u00a3193,780 as of 2013).
The Abbey's 17th century organ - known as the Milton Organ - was originally made for Magdalen College, Oxford by Robert Dallam. After the English Civil War it was removed to the chapel of Hampton Court Palace and came to Tewkesbury in 1737. Since then, it has undergone several major rebuilds.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEGB2 - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan. Fanigan's son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a ?œ400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of ?œ500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

St John's the Evangelist's Church, Warrington is in Walton, Warrington, Cheshire, England. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II* listed building. It was built as a private estate church towards the end of the 19th century but is now an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.

At the heart of Liverpool's thriving Baltic Triangle, the 64-unit apartment complex was on track to bring a number of new, modern, affordable homes and commercial spaces to the much sought-after area in 2022. However, with Crossfield Construction going into administration, progress halted on the development in early 2022.
Despite this setback, Torus has reaffirmed its commitment to invest ?œ9.8 million into the development and HMS will start on site imminently, completing The Vaults by Spring 2024. When finished, The Vaults will see 64 homes available for Rent to Buy, bringing affordable housing solutions directly to Liverpool's City Centre.
Mobilising the site throughout January, HMS will complete all internal works as well as a number of remedial and external works, completely transforming the stalled site and realising Torus' ambitions of supporting even more people onto the property ladder in a way that suits their budget.
Discussing HMS' latest appointment, Director of Development & Sales at Torus Developments, Steve Alcock, said:
As the sixth scheme HMS has stepped in to complete for Torus, following the collapse of a number of other contractors, I am confident that the development of The Vaults is in safe hands. The team are becoming experts at completing this type of project and delivering high quality homes in difficult circumstances.
