Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DX14P2 - A Reform UK campaign sign staked into a front garden outside a red brick suburban house in Denton, Greater Manchester, promoting the candidate Matt Goodwin and urging support in the Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election, dated 26th February. The turquoise sign carries the Reform UK branding and the slogan I'm voting Matt Goodwin, with a smaller matching poster visible in the window behind. In the background, two flags fly above the garden hedge, a Union Jack and an England flag, adding a distinctly British, patriotic visual cue to the scene. Shot in late winter, the garden planting looks subdued and evergreen, with bare branches overhead and low seasonal colour, while the sky shows patches of blue with broken cloud in cold daylight. The image captures the everyday, street level nature of UK electioneering, where campaign messaging is planted literally at the boundary between private homes and public streets. It works as an editorial illustration of modern British politics, local campaigning, voter persuasion, and how parties use domestic spaces, signage, and national symbols to signal identity, affiliation, and intent in the run-up to polling day. The photograph also documents the visual language of a contemporary UK by-election, including typography, slogans, and date specific political advertising in a residential neighbourhood.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTT9 - Editorial concept image showing the words Hope and Glory in bright neon lighting set against a large Union Jack flag within an ornate gold frame. The composition turns a familiar patriotic phrase into a loaded political symbol, inviting interpretations linked to Brexit, British nationalism, imperial nostalgia, sovereignty politics and the continuing argument about Britain's place in Europe and the wider world. The red, white and blue neon text has the feel of a bold public statement, but the image can also be read ironically, as a commentary on older myths of British greatness, post-imperial identity and the clash between nostalgic patriotism and modern multicultural reality. This makes it especially useful for editorial themes around Reform UK style politics, populism, anti EU sentiment, culture war rhetoric, anti immigration narratives, English nationalism, flag politics and debates about whether appeals to national pride are harmless symbolism or part of something darker and more exclusionary. The visual impact is strong, with the glowing neon letters creating a sense of theatricality and confrontation, while the Union Jack backdrop anchors the subject firmly in British political and cultural discourse. Suitable uses include news features, opinion pieces, magazine essays, blogs and commentary about Brexit Britain, reactionary politics, national identity, patriotic branding, empire memory, right-wing campaigning, xenophobia debate and the tension between civic pride and exclusionary ideas of belonging. The image also works more broadly as a symbol of contested Britishness, where slogans such as Hope and Glory can be understood either as celebration or as critique, depending on the context in which they are used. A visually striking current affairs illustration for stories about political symbolism, national myth-making, contested patriotism and the ongoing reshaping of British identity after Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMENT - Covent Garden is a district in London, on the eastern fringes of the West End, between St Martin's Lane and Drury Lane. It is associated with the former fruit-and-vegetable market in the central square, now a popular shopping and tourist site, and with the Royal Opera House, itself known as Covent Garden. The district is divided by the main thoroughfare of Long Acre, north of which is given over to independent shops centred on Neal's Yard and Seven Dials, while the south contains the central square with its street performers and most of the historical buildings, theatres and entertainment facilities, including the London Transport Museum and the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
Covent Garden falls within the London boroughs of Westminster and Camden and the parliamentary constituencies of Cities of London and Westminster and Holborn and St Pancras. The area has been served by the Piccadilly line at Covent Garden tube station since 1907
the 300-yard journey from Leicester Square tube station is the shortest in London

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YTG - Hale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England with a population of 1,800. The village is north of the River Mersey, and just to the east of the boundary with Merseyside. It is 2+1⁄2 miles east of Speke in Liverpool, and 4 miles south-west of Widnes. The nearby village of Halebank is to the north-east.
Historically part of Lancashire, until 1 April 1974 the area formed part of the Whiston Rural District.
The population of the parish is stable with a population of 1,898 (2001 census), 1,841 (2011 census) and 1,800 (2021 census).
John Middleton (15781623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received £20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGHXB0 - A large, brightly coloured mural promoting Faith Hope Charity, painted on the side of a small brick building in The Fountain, a predominantly loyalist residential area of Derry / Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The artwork features portraits, religious and charitable symbolism, and references to international outreach, including Ghana, alongside strong expressions of British identity. A large Union flag painted on an adjacent wall reinforces the cultural and political context of the neighbourhood.
The Fountain is one of the oldest inhabited areas of the city and is well known for its distinct community identity and extensive use of murals and painted symbols as expressions of heritage, belief, and local values. Murals in this area often combine themes of religion, charity, history, and identity, serving both as community statements and as visual markers within the urban landscape.
Photographed in daylight under overcast skies, the image captures the mural's bold colours contrasted against the surrounding residential environment. The photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial uses illustrating Northern Irish mural culture, community identity, charitable organisations, peace and reconciliation contexts, and the continuing role of public art in expressing local narratives within divided or post-conflict urban settings.
Location: The Fountain, Derry / Londonderry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, BT48 (exact street and full postcode not visible on the image).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDHC - Wide exterior editorial photograph of BMA House in Tavistock Square, Bloomsbury, central London, showing the formal red-brick headquarters building of the British Medical Association behind black wrought-iron gates, with a central clock, classical stone portico, sash windows and the Union flag flying above the roofline against a bright blue sky. This image identifies the London headquarters of the BMA, the trade union and professional body for doctors and medical students in the UK, and a building closely associated with national debate over NHS pay, doctors' contracts, strike action, industrial action guidance, collective bargaining and wider healthcare politics. The composition presents the full institutional facade and entrance court, making it useful for editorial coverage of resident doctors, junior doctors, consultants, SAS doctors, union negotiations, ballots, workforce pressures, staffing shortages, public sector disputes and the effect of NHS disruption on patients and services. Search themes include BMA offices Tavistock Square London WC1H 9JP, from where the NHS strikes and industrial action is planned, British Medical Association headquarters, medical union headquarters, doctors union London, NHS strikes, doctors strikes, healthcare governance, public policy, labour relations, industrial relations, representative body, lobbying, campaign leadership, public healthcare, British medicine, health service crisis, patient disruption, current affairs, news background, newspaper illustration and broadcast backdrop. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDHF - Close-up editorial photograph of the British Medical Association sign outside BMA House in Tavistock Square, central London, showing the words 'British Medical Association' and 'BMA House' in white lettering on a dark plaque mounted on a stone exterior wall. The image identifies the headquarters of the BMA, the UK professional body and trade union for doctors and medical students, and a location strongly associated with public debate over NHS policy, doctors' pay, medical professionalism, workforce pressures and industrial action. This tightly framed architectural detail works well as an editorial stock image for stories about healthcare politics, NHS reform, junior doctors, resident doctors, consultants, strike ballots, trade union negotiations, pay disputes, working conditions, medical representation and the relationship between the medical profession and government. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7R - This image shows the Palace of Westminster, home to the UK Parliament, viewed from the River Thames in central London. The Gothic Revival complex dominates the skyline, with the Elizabeth Tower and the Victoria Tower rising above the riverside trees.
In the foreground, Lambeth Bridge spans the Thames, providing a strong visual lead-in across the river toward Westminster. The bridge connects the City of Westminster with Lambeth on the south bank and is a key transport crossing in this part of London.
The Palace of Westminster is one of the most recognisable symbols of British democracy and governance. Originally rebuilt in the 19th century after a catastrophic fire, it now serves as the meeting place for the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Its riverside setting reinforces the historic relationship between the Thames and the development of London as a political and administrative centre.
Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered clouds, the image combines heritage architecture, river transport, and urban infrastructure. It is well suited to editorial use covering British politics, government institutions, London landmarks, heritage tourism, constitutional history, and the River Thames as a defining feature of the capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHNR9 - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.
During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Avanti West Coast provide the principal long-distance passenger services on the West Coast Main Line between London, the West Midlands, North West England, North Wales and Scotland. Its services connect six of the largest cities in the UK: London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, which have a combined metropolitan population of over 18 million. At the start of the franchise, the rolling stock used for these services consisted of 56 Class 390 Pendolino high speed electric multiple units and 18 Class 221 Super Voyager diesel-electric multiple units
in 2019, it was announced that the Super Voyagers would be replaced by newly built Class 805 bi-mode multiple units and Class 807 electric multiple units. Originally, Avanti West Coast was set to operate the pending high speed train fleet intended for use on High Speed 2, although the contract is set to end prior

Royal Mail workers poised for strikes after Easter as talks falter
CWU union lines up action as MP brands bosses' threat to put service into administration as scandalous'
Postal workers at Royal Mail are poised to stage a fresh wave of strikes after Easter as talks stalled, amid a scandalous threat by bosses to put the company into administration.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which represents about 115,000 postal workers, is close to agreeing multiple strike dates to take place later in April, the Guardian understands, in the long-running dispute between the company and union. A formal announcement of the strike dates is expected this week.
Relations between Royal Mail executives and its workforce have been strained during the months-long dispute over pay and working practices. The situation escalated last night when the Guardian revealed the company's board has threatened to put the loss-making postal service the regulated UK entity that delivers to every address in the country into a form of government-handled administration if a deal could not be agreed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1NK6G - St Michael and All Angels Church stands on Warhill overlooking the village of Mottram in Longdendale, Greater Manchester, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Mottram
The earliest evidence of a church on the site is in 1225 when clergy attached to the church were witnesses to local documents. There is a further reference to the church in a taxation document dated 1291. The present church dates from the end of the 15th century. A major restoration took place in 185455 by E. H. Shellard, during which the nave roof was raised
The church is built from local stone quarried from Tinsell-Norr in Perpendicular style. The plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a two-bay chancel and a south porch. At the east end of each aisle is a chapel. The north chapel is known as the Hollingworth Chapel and the south chapel is the Staley Chapel. The tower is in four stages with angled buttresses, a three-light west window above which is a clock face and two-light belfry openings. In one corner is a stair turret. At the top is a castellated parapet with crocketed corner finials.
In the churchyard is a sundial with a dial dated 1811. It consists of a stone shaft with a copper dial and a gnomon. It is listed at Grade II. Also listed at Grade II are the gatepiers, railings, steps and walls of the churchyard. Near the church is a medieval cross which was restored in 1760 and again in 1897, the latter restoration being to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. The octagonal shaft stands on a stepped circular ashlar plinth. On its top is a cubical sundial with three copper faces. It is listed at Grade II*

Glossop's ambulance station could be under threat as health chiefs look at ways to save cash.
The Chapel Street station is one of 17 out of 35 in the region being reviewed by the North West Ambulance Service.
The service is considering closing, merging or relocating stations or carrying out major repairs.
With stations in Ashton and Dukinfield also under review, it could mean that the closest ambulance station to Glossop becomes Stockport 13 miles away.
The ambulance service will set out plans by June but says no final decisions have been made.
But local health chiefs have raised concerns about the proposals.
Dr Kailash Chand, chair of NHS Tameside and Glossop, said: This is something which is trying to get value for money but from which local communities could suffer.
Any reconfiguration in which local communities could suffer needs looking at. They are saying it will improve efficiency but I have my reservations.
Alan Stuttard, director of finance at NWAS, said that all stations in the North West will be examined.
The closure of some sites remains a possibility.
He said: In the current financial climate, as a responsible public sector organisation, NWAS must look at ways in which it can make efficiencies with minimum disruption to its frontline services.
One area which is currently being reviewed is our estate.
We are exploring opportunities to move some stations to shared or other accommodation without affecting the performance or level of resources in the area it's important to remember that it is not always the case that responding vehicles are from the nearest station. Other considerations are to ensure staff can be accommodated at appropriate sites and maintenance and running costs are minimised.
This review is looking at all stations/sites within the North West, and there is a possibility that some ambulance stations will close

It was at theManchesterMechanics' Institute in 1868 that the first meeting of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) took place in 1868. Fifty years later, in 1918, the Pankhurst's led a victory that was meant to mark the beginning of the end of a war for gender equality. Sylvia Pankhurst, a suffragette, imprisoned numerous times, came to see the struggle for women to have the vote as just one strand in a larger struggle for equality.
Manchester UNISON and UNISON North West
UNISON members work in many different roles in providing public services. It is the union for workers in sectors including local government, the NHS, the police service, education, utilities, transport and the voluntary sector. With 200,000 members it is the biggest union in the region and more than two-thirds of its members are women.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JEKRBE - The RMT was formed in 1990 through a merger of the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) and the National Union of Seamen (NUS) to create a single transport industry trade union. Its president is Alex Gordon and its general secretary Mick Lynch
Rail union RMT launch 3 days of national strike action across the railway network.
Over 50,000 railway workers will walkout as part of 3 days of national strike action later this month, in the biggest dispute on the network since 1989.
The union will shut down the country's railway network on 21st, 23rd and 25th June, due to the inability of the rail employers to come to a negotiated settlement with RMT.
Network Rail and the train operating companies have subjected their staff to multiyear pay freezes and plan to cut thousands of jobs which will make the railways unsafe.
Despite intense talks with the rail bosses, The RMT has not been able to secure a pay proposal nor a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies.

At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBXJJF - The national flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack, also known as the Union Flag.
The design of the Union Jack dates back to the Act of Union 1801 which united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland (previously in personal union) to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The flag consists of the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England (which also represents Wales)), edged in white, superimposed on the saltire of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), also edged in white, which are superimposed on the saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland). Wales is not represented in the Union Flag by Wales's patron saint, Saint David, because the flag was designed whilst Wales was part of the Kingdom of England.
The Union Flag can be flown by any individual or organisation in Great Britain on any day of their choice. Legal regulations restrict the use of the Union Flag on Government buildings in Northern Ireland. Long-standing restrictions on Government use of the flag elsewhere were abolished in July 2007
The Union Flag is flown from Government buildings at half-mast in the following situations:
from the announcement of the death of the Sovereign (an exception is made for Proclamation Day the day the new Sovereign is proclaimed, when the Flag is flown at full mast from 11 am to sunset)
the day of the funeral of a member of the British Royal Family
the funeral of a foreign Head of State
the funeral of a former British Prime Minister

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EDR651 - Sterling banknotes are the banknotes in circulation in the British Islands (encompassing the United Kingdom and the British Crown dependencies), denominated in pounds sterling (symbol: £
ISO 4217 currency code GBP). One pound is equivalent to 100 pence.
The pound is the official currency of the United Kingdom and the Crown dependencies of Britain. Three British Overseas Territories also have currencies called pounds which are at par with the pound sterling.
The Bank of England does act as a central bank in that it has a monopoly on issuing banknotes in England and Wales, and regulates the issues of banks in Scotland.
The issuing of retail-bank banknotes in Scotland is subject to the Bank Charter Act 1844, Banknotes (Scotland) Act 1845, the Currency and Bank Notes Act 1928, and the Coinage Act 1971. Pursuant to some of these statutes, the Commissioners for Revenue and Customs publishes an account of the Amount of Notes authorised by Law to be issued by the several Banks of Issue in Scotland, and the Average Amount of Notes in Circulation, and of Bank of England Notes and Coin held in the London Gazette. See for example Gazette Issue 58254 published 21 February 2007 at page 2544

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE54XK - The Working Men's Club and Institute Union (CIU or C&IU) is a voluntary association of private members' clubs in Great Britain & Northern Ireland, with about 1,800 associate clubs. One club in the Republic of Ireland, the City of Dublin Working Men's Club is also affiliated. Most social clubs are affiliated to the CIU.
They do not have to be working men's clubs, although most are. There are many village clubs, Royal British Legions, Labour Clubs, Liberal Clubs, and various other clubs involved. A member of one CIU-affiliated club is entitled to use the facilities of all other CIU clubs, although they will only be entitled to vote in committee elections in clubs where they are full members.
The CIU has two main purposes: to provide a voice at national level for working men's clubs and social clubs, and to provide discounted products and services for its members.
Until 2004, the CIU had its own beer brewed by the Federation brewery in Dunston, Tyne and Wear. Although CIU-affiliated clubs do still receive discounted beer, these discounts are largely passed on to the members, and Federation beer will generally be cheaper than beer available in local pubs. The brewery was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle in 2004 and now brews Newcastle Brown Ale.
Together with other club organisations such as the Royal British Legion, the Association of Conservative Clubs, the National Union of Liberal Clubs and the National Union of Labour and Socialist Clubs, the CIU is part of CORCA (Confederation of Registered Club Associations) which lobbies Parliament on behalf of clubs. This group was active in the debate about smoking: as most clubs are known for working men who like to drink and smoke (in many cases without any women in the bar), there is some concern about the future prospects of clubs.
The CIU holds a national congress every year and as part of its activities runs convalescent homes. In many ways, it could be said to be the oldest surviving friendly society

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BNKK78 - It was formerly the main station serving the town, with links north to Ramsbottom, thence via Stubbins Junction either to Rawtenstall and Bacup or to Haslingden and Accrington
and south to Radcliffe Central, Whitefield, Prestwich and Manchester Victoria or via Radcliffe Bridge to Clifton Junction and the Bolton line. There was also a local branch to Holcombe Brook and a curve to connect with Bury Knowsley Street station.
The station was opened by the East Lancashire Railway (ELR), on 28 September 1846, as Bury station. The ELR was absorbed by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway on 13 May 1859. The station was renamed Bury Bolton Street in February 1866. The building is situated in a cutting with a low level yard on the east side, approached by an incline from Bolton Street and a flight of steps from Bank Street. To the north is the Bolton Street Tunnel.
In its original incarnation, it boasted the headquarters of the East Lancashire Railway, situated on the up platform adjacent to the yard. This fine neo-classical structure in the italianate style had the usual station accommodation on the ground floor and the company offices (including a boardroom) on the upper floors. The headquarters building supported an overall train shed roof in the Paxton style, supported on the other side by a row of iron columns on an island platform.
BR closed the station on 17 March 1980, when it was replaced by a new bus/rail interchange
this has been the terminus of the Metrolink service from Manchester since 1991.
