Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E26XDX - Street scene in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, showing a traditional white KCOM telephone kiosk standing on the pavement beside red brick commercial buildings in the town centre. The photograph captures a distinctive example of regional street furniture associated with Kingston Communications, now KCOM, the telecoms provider historically linked with Hull and the surrounding East Yorkshire area. Unlike the more familiar red British telephone boxes seen elsewhere in the UK, this cream or white kiosk has a strong local identity and immediately suggests the unusual telecommunications history of the region. Its glazed panels, classic proportions and slightly weathered appearance give the image real documentary value for themes such as public telephony, changing communications technology, urban nostalgia, telecom history, heritage infrastructure and the gradual decline of public phone boxes in everyday British life.
The setting in Beverley adds extra place value because the town is a well-known historic Yorkshire market town with an attractive centre, traditional streetscape and strong visual character. The image works well for editorial and commercial use around East Yorkshire identity, regional infrastructure, local telecoms history, heritage street features, public realm design, British street scenes and the surviving traces of the analogue era in modern town centres. It can also illustrate broader themes such as disappearing public services, changing technology, nostalgia for older forms of communication, civic heritage, urban detail, architectural character and the contrast between historic street furniture and contemporary digital life. The white kiosk, paired with the surrounding brick architecture and shopfront setting, makes the photograph especially useful for searches relating to Beverley, KCOM, Kingston Communications, Yorkshire travel, market town tourism, streetscape photography and distinctive local landmarks in northern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DNNR05 - A vibrant piece of street art by All Weather Artist in Stockport's Underbanks area, painted on a brick wall beside a stepped, cobbled passageway. The mural shows a small bird in flight, with a long beak and outstretched wings that read as hummingbird-like, set against a vivid green background. The artist's tag ALL WEATHER ARTIST is clearly visible on the wall, which makes the image immediately useful for editorial buyers needing legible attribution and a recognisable local street-art signature. The setting is just as important as the artwork: an enclosed, characterful space with red brick buildings, black metal railings above, an iron handrail running up the steps, and a traditional street lamp, all reinforcing the Underbanks as an older town-centre quarter that has been repurposed and re-energised through culture and independent activity.
The ground is scattered with fallen leaves, suggesting autumn, and the light is cool, shaded daylight typical of a narrow alley or courtyard rather than full sun. There are no hard shadows, so conditions are likely overcast or the mural is in permanent shade from surrounding buildings. The paving looks dry, so there is no clear evidence of recent rain, but the overall feel is of a crisp, outdoor urban space in the shoulder season.
As a commercial and editorial subject, this photograph supports multiple angles: UK street art, public art in historic town centres, regeneration and place making, cultural trails, and the way murals add colour and identity to overlooked routes and back streets. Stockport Council promotes the Underbanks as an area where street art is part of the visitor experience, and this kind of piece works well as an establishing visual for features on the Underbanks' creative character and walking routes through the old town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DNNR1K - A wide town-centre view of Stockport Market Hall with the tower of St Mary's Church rising behind it, creating a strong landmark pairing in the Market Place area of Stockport, Greater Manchester. The market hall frontage shows a repeating rhythm of tall, arched glazed sections and painted structural framing, a distinctive Victorian civic style that reads clearly as an indoor market building. Behind and to the right, the stone church tower with its clock face provides vertical emphasis and instant place recognition, helping the image work as an establishing shot for Stockport town centre and its historic core.
The light is bright and crisp under a clear blue sky, with hard-edged shadows suggesting low winter sun. Leafless trees in the distance reinforce the season as winter or very early spring. The scene looks dry, with no obvious rain sheen on the road surface, and the clarity of the air suggests settled, cold weather rather than drizzle or mist. These conditions give the buildings strong contrast and definition, useful for editorial clients who need clean architectural detail.
Stockport's covered market hall is widely described as the glass umbrella, a reference to its iron, timber and glass construction and its historic role as a weatherproof trading space. It dates from the early 1860s and is Grade II listed, making it an important example of nineteenth-century market architecture and a key part of the town's heritage offer. St Mary's sits immediately opposite the market on Churchgate and is commonly presented as the town's oldest parish church, giving the location a layered civic identity that links commerce, worship, and public gathering in a compact, walkable centre.
The photograph supports multiple editorial angles: high street life, markets and independent traders, heritage-led regeneration, visitor economy, and northern English town centres adapting historic assets for modern use. The clean lines of the market roof and the recognisable church tower.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DYWT2H - A green, fully liveried OVO Energy electric van is parked kerbside on a Scottish street, photographed in clean side profile against a pale stone built urban facade with modern windows. The wrap is dominated by the oversized OVO logo and clear net zero messaging, including Join us on the Path to Zero, On the road to better energy, and I'm electric!, making the vehicle both a working fleet asset and a moving billboard for decarbonisation. The image sits neatly at the junction of everyday streetscape and big policy themes: electrification of transport, corporate sustainability claims, and the practical reality of reducing tailpipe emissions in towns and cities.
As an energy supplier brand, OVO has marketed itself around greener energy and customer engagement, and a branded EV van like this signals fleet electrification as well as electricity's expanding role beyond the home. It also hints at the wider infrastructure behind the slogan: public charging networks, depot charging, smart scheduling, and the shift from petrol and diesel maintenance routines to battery health checks, tyres, and software updates. The bright green livery leans into familiar visual language of clean energy, while the plain, high contrast typography is designed to be readable at speed, in rain, or in low winter light, which suits Scotland's changeable conditions.
Editorially, the photograph works for stories about the UK energy market, green tariffs, ESG claims, net zero targets, and the slow, visible migration of commercial fleets to electric. It can also illustrate debates about consumer trust in sustainability messaging, the cost of the transition, and whether path to zero campaigns translate into measurable emissions reductions. The street context adds documentary value, placing climate themed branding into ordinary public space rather than a staged press photo. The van's quiet operation and zero exhaust emissions link to local air quality and noise reduction on streets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJB0 - An Edinburgh Tram stopped at the Newhaven terminus on Newhaven Place, Edinburgh, postcode EH6 4DF. The image shows a modern articulated tram operating on street-level tracks with overhead power lines, part of the city's expanding light rail network serving the north of Edinburgh.
The Newhaven extension connects Leith and the waterfront districts with Edinburgh city centre, improving access to employment, housing, and visitor destinations. The tram system plays a key role in the city's sustainable transport strategy, offering a reliable alternative to private car use and supporting reductions in congestion and emissions.
Newhaven forms part of the historic port area of Leith, which has seen significant residential and mixed-use redevelopment in recent years. The introduction of tram services reflects wider investment in public transport and urban regeneration along Edinburgh's northern corridor.
Photographed in daylight under overcast skies, the image documents everyday public transport in operation and is suitable for editorial use covering urban mobility, transport infrastructure investment, sustainable cities, and contemporary life in Edinburgh.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDJ32 - This image shows a Barclays cash machine set into the exterior wall of a building on High Street in Northwich, Cheshire. Above the ATM is the distinctive blue Barclays eagle logo, a long-established element of the bank's corporate branding, clearly identifying the cashpoint as part of the Barclays retail banking network.
Cash machines such as this form a visible and practical layer of everyday financial infrastructure on UK high streets, providing access to cash even as traditional bank branch services have reduced or moved online. In many towns, ATMs remain one of the last physical touchpoints between major banking institutions and the public, particularly important for older residents, small businesses, and cash-based transactions.
The photograph focuses on branding and placement rather than people, highlighting how corporate identity is embedded into the built environment. The clean, functional design of the ATM contrasts with the textured wall surface and soft daylight shadows, reinforcing the sense of routine, everyday use rather than spectacle.
In the wider context of Northwich town centre, the image reflects ongoing changes in high-street banking, where full-service branches have been rationalised but cash access points continue to play a key role. As a documentary image, it records both a recognisable global banking brand and a specific local location, making it relevant to themes of finance, retail banking, urban change, and the persistence of cash in an increasingly digital economy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PT - This photograph shows a tractor-pulled trailer transporting spectators from the Silverstone Woodlands camping area towards the main entrance gates of Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix weekend. The improvised shuttle service provides a practical alternative to long walks across the expansive site, particularly valuable during busy arrival and departure periods.
The use of agricultural tractors and covered trailers reflects the rural setting of Silverstone and the temporary infrastructure required to support one of the UK's largest annual sporting events. Such transport solutions are common during major race weekends, helping manage pedestrian flow, improve accessibility, and reduce fatigue for campers carrying bags and supplies.
Passengers are seen boarding and disembarking in casual summer clothing under clear blue skies, reinforcing the relaxed, festival-style atmosphere that now surrounds modern Formula One events. The scene highlights the blend of countryside practicality and international motorsport spectacle that characterises the British Grand Prix.
Well suited for editorial use, this image documents event logistics, spectator experience, and the behind-the-scenes transport arrangements that enable large numbers of fans to move efficiently between camping areas and circuit facilities at Silverstone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PW - This photograph shows large numbers of Formula One fans gathered in tightly packed queues at entrance gates to Silverstone Circuit, having walked in from surrounding car parking areas during the British Grand Prix weekend. The image captures the scale of attendance and the steady, patient movement of spectators as they wait to be processed through ticket and security checks.
The crowd is diverse in age and dress, with many fans carrying backpacks, drinks, and personal items for a full day at the circuit. Bright summer sunshine and clear blue skies reinforce the seasonal nature of the event and the festival-like atmosphere that surrounds the British Grand Prix, one of the UK's most popular annual sporting occasions.
Such scenes highlight the logistical challenge of managing tens of thousands of arrivals within short time windows, where crowd density, pedestrian flow, and safety must be carefully controlled. The image documents the behind-the-scenes reality of large-scale motorsport events, where arrival routes from car parks, queuing systems, and stewarding play a critical role in maintaining order and public safety.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph illustrates crowd behaviour, event access planning, and the lived experience of attending Formula One at Silverstone, capturing both the anticipation and the practical realities faced by spectators before they reach the track.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PY - This photograph shows heavy congestion and long queues at an entrance gate to Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix. Large numbers of spectators are held within temporary metal barriers as they wait to pass through controlled access points, illustrating the crowd density and operational pressures typical of peak arrival periods at major international sporting events.
The image captures a moment where pedestrian flow slows and compresses, emphasising the importance of effective crowd management, stewarding, and clear communication to maintain safety and prevent frustration. Bright summer weather and casual clothing underline the scale of attendance, while the tightly packed queues reflect the popularity of the British Grand Prix and the challenges of processing tens of thousands of visitors within limited time windows.
Entrance congestion of this kind highlights the logistical complexity of Formula One events, where security screening, ticket checks, and safety controls must balance speed with duty of care. The photograph provides strong documentary context for discussions around event planning, access design, and public safety at large UK sporting venues.
Well suited for editorial use, this image illustrates crowd behaviour, access bottlenecks, and the realities of managing spectator entry at one of the world's most famous motorsport circuits.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5T1 - This image shows a Silverstone Formula One Medical Response Unit vehicle parked adjacent to pedestrian access routes during a British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire. The clearly marked medical response car forms part of the extensive safety and emergency planning required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Formula One race weekends at Silverstone attract very large crowds over several days, placing significant emphasis on spectator welfare, rapid emergency response, and effective crowd management. Dedicated medical vehicles and trained response teams are strategically positioned around the circuit to ensure fast access to both trackside incidents and public areas used by fans.
The photograph captures spectators walking past the medical unit under clear summer skies, reinforcing the visible presence of safety infrastructure within the wider event environment. Temporary fencing, controlled access routes, and speed restriction signage illustrate the layered approach to risk management that underpins large-scale motorsport events.
Beyond the racing itself, the image highlights the operational realities of hosting international sporting events, where emergency preparedness, duty of care, and public safety are as critical as sporting spectacle. It is well suited for editorial use covering motorsport safety, event management, emergency services, and crowd protection at major UK sporting venues.

How much does an Escapade Silverstone house cost?
Escapade Silverstone prices start at £850,000 for a countryside 2 bedroom property and go up to £2.2m for a trackside 4 bedroom property.
Can you live in them?
This is where it gets interesting. The Escapade Silverstone development is designed to be an extension of Silverstone's current hospitality offering and as such they are fully managed by Silverstone circuit themselves, right down to the matching furnishings.
If you purchase one of the properties you can live in it for a pre-determined number of days each year. Go over that number of days and you have to pay a nightly room rate to stay in your own property, albeit at a 35% discount over standard rates.
You can stay for 30 nights multiplied by the number of bedrooms in your property. If you have a 4 bedroom trackside residency, you have 120 bedroom usage nights' per calendar year that you can stay.
During the major events at Silverstone, nightly bedroom usage rates are multiplied by a preset factor. At the F1 the nights are multiplied by 5, and all of the bedrooms in the property are assumed to be used regardless of how full it is.
So if just one couple stays in a 4 bedroom trackside suite for 3 nights at the F1, they would use up 60 (half) of their yearly bedroom usage nights.
an investment with petrolhead perks
Owning one of the Escapade Silverstone properties is like a cross between owning an AirBnB and a Timeshare.
Think of the whole Escapade development as a hotel complex. Now think of the money to purchase one of the properties as an investment in the hotel. As a perk of your investment you get a number of free' night's accommodation in the property with incredible views of the circuit, as well as a number of other bonuses including free access to Silverstone events, free access to the Escapade clubhouse

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PR - This image shows winners of a charity auction posing with illustrated pub signs from The Petrol Head, a themed pop-up pub at Silverstone Woodlands camping during the 2023 Formula 1 British Grand Prix weekend.
The Petrol Head pub formed part of the temporary festival-style facilities provided for F1 fans staying at the Woodlands campsite near Silverstone Circuit.
As part of the event, a selection of bespoke, illustrated pub signs created specifically for the pop-up venue were auctioned to raise money for charity.
The auction took place during the race weekend, with all proceeds from the sale of the signs donated to charitable causes supported by the organisers.
Such charity auctions are a regular feature of large UK motorsport camping events, combining memorabilia, fan engagement, and fundraising in an informal social setting.
The two winning bidders are shown holding their purchased signs immediately after the auction, marking both the fundraising success and the temporary nature of the installation.
The event highlights how major sporting weekends such as the British Grand Prix often include community-focused fundraising activities alongside entertainment and hospitality.
While the pub itself existed only for the duration of the F1 weekend, the auctioned signs became lasting keepsakes linked to a specific moment in the 2023 British Grand Prix.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R72E6N - Leading contractor developer for the social housing sector, Lane End Developments Construction, has gone into administration.
The Warrington-based business operates across the North west of England and Wales.
Managing directors of insolvency firm Quantuma Jeremy Woodside and Frank Ofonagoro, both of the firm's Manchester office, have been appointed joint administrators.
The company was set up in 2016 and has built more than 1,100. It currently has live projects on 17 different sites - which aimed to create 1,700 new homes - employing 118 staff.
Current projects include delivering a 177 affordable homes scheme in Llandudno in partnership with ClwydAlyn and a 60 home scheme with Torus in Wigan.
In its last financial year, to the end of May, 2022, the company generated revenues of around £81m with a pre-tax profit of nearly £250,000.
Mr Woodside said:This is obviously a very difficult and uncertain time for the company, its employees and suppliers, and its wider stakeholders.
We're currently working alongside potential funders and senior management to assess the options available to them to restructure Lane End Developments Construction and allow it to continue to operate and deliver housing projects.
The contractor had been developing schemes with a string of housing associations, including L&Q, Jigsaw Homes and Onward, when it announced its collapse in April.
At the time, the three landlords said they were disappointed and concerned about the firm's collapse, but none were named in the list of creditors that are owed money.
The administrator's proposal shows that for the year end of 31 May 2022, Lane End had a turnover of more than £81m, but its profit for the year was less than £178,000. Tangible assets were just over £1m.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PG - This photograph shows the frontage of the Original Co-operative Store on Toad Lane in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, widely recognised as the birthplace of the modern Co-operative movement. It was here, in 1844, that the Rochdale Pioneers opened a small shop selling basic goods under principles that would go on to influence cooperative retailing across Britain and around the world.
The modest red brick building, with its distinctive green door and bay windows, reflects the practical and unpretentious origins of the movement. The Rochdale Pioneers were working men seeking fair prices, honest weights, and ethical trading at a time when food adulteration and exploitative retail practices were common. Their principles, including democratic member control and the distribution of surplus to members, became the foundation of the global cooperative model.
Today the building is preserved as a heritage site and museum, forming a key part of Rochdale's identity and its contribution to social reform, retail history, and working-class self-organisation. The surrounding streetscape of Toad Lane reinforces the historical setting, offering a tangible link to nineteenth-century industrial Lancashire.
Photographed in clear daylight, this image documents an internationally significant site in the history of retail, mutualism, and social enterprise. It is well suited for editorial use covering British social history, cooperative economics, heritage preservation, and the development of ethical retailing traditions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PM - This image shows the decorative hanging shop sign outside The Dolls Hospital on Toad Lane in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The sign, titled Toys & Dolls, features traditional illustrated artwork and text describing the business as master toymakers and purveyors of playthings, with references to antique and reproduction dolls and a dolls' hospital service.
Toad Lane is one of Rochdale's most historically significant streets and is closely associated with the town's commercial and cooperative heritage. Independent specialist retailers such as The Dolls Hospital contribute to the character of the area, offering niche craft skills and traditional services that contrast with modern chain retail.
The sign itself is suspended from a wrought iron bracket and designed in a deliberately old-fashioned style, evoking Victorian and Edwardian shop signage. Its weathered appearance and detailed illustration underline the shop's emphasis on heritage, craftsmanship, and the repair and restoration of dolls rather than mass-produced modern toys.
Photographed in clear daylight, the image highlights the role of traditional hanging signs in British town centres, where they remain an important visual marker of independent shops and specialist trades. This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering retail heritage, historic high streets, traditional craftsmanship, and the cultural character of northern English towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JCC - This image shows a Hank strength tester, a specialised industrial testing instrument manufactured by J Nesbitt of Manchester, a city historically at the heart of Britain's textile and cotton industries. The machine features a circular analogue dial gauge marked with measurement increments, connected to a system of levers and mechanical arms designed to apply controlled tension to yarn or thread samples.
Hank strength testers were used in textile mills and laboratories to assess the tensile strength of yarn, helping manufacturers maintain consistent quality in spinning and weaving processes. The visible maker's marking J Nesbitt, Manchester situates the machine firmly within the industrial heritage of Lancashire, where precision engineering supported large-scale textile production during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The photograph is presented in black and white, emphasising surface textures, wear, and patina on the metal components. Scratches, oxidisation, and softened edges suggest long-term industrial use, reinforcing the authenticity of the object as working machinery rather than a pristine museum exhibit. The exposed mechanical linkage and weight system reflect the practical, robust design typical of early industrial measuring devices.
Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of industrial history, textile manufacturing, mechanical engineering, heritage machinery, and the evolution of quality control in manufacturing. The Hank strength tester stands as a reminder of Manchester's global significance during the Industrial Revolution and the skilled engineering that underpinned its dominance in textile production.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JCP - This photograph shows an Underwood Standard manual typewriter, a landmark design in the history of writing and office technology. Finished in black metal with exposed mechanical components, the machine features a full QWERTY keyboard, circular glass-topped keys, ribbon spools, and a paper roller platen, all characteristic of early twentieth-century typewriter engineering.
The Underwood Standard series, produced from the late nineteenth century onwards, was among the first typewriters to achieve widespread commercial success. Its open-frame design allowed typists to see the text as it was being typed, a significant innovation at the time that helped establish Underwood as a dominant name in offices, newsrooms, and government departments around the world.
The image highlights the tactile, mechanical nature of analogue writing technology, with visible levers, springs, and typebars arranged in a semi-circular basket beneath the carriage. The worn surfaces and patina suggest long-term use, reinforcing the sense of durability and craftsmanship associated with these machines.
Typewriters such as this played a central role in the development of modern administration, journalism, and literature, shaping how documents were produced long before the arrival of computers and word processors. Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of writing history, vintage office culture, industrial design, mechanical craftsmanship, and the evolution of communication technology.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMRX - This image shows the exterior of the Barrel Store operated by Wild Card Brewery, located on the Ravenswood Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, East London. Bold painted lettering on the rendered wall advertises the Barrel Store and highlights the brewery's focus on the retail and manufacture of barrel-aged beer, a specialist area within the UK craft brewing scene.
Wild Card Brewery is part of a wider cluster of independent creative and food-and-drink businesses that have taken root in former light-industrial premises across Walthamstow. Facilities such as the Barrel Store are used for ageing beer in oak barrels, allowing flavours to develop over extended periods and linking modern craft brewing with traditional production techniques.
The scene is photographed in daylight under a partly cloudy sky, with picnic-style outdoor seating visible in front of the building, suggesting use as both a working production space and a customer-facing retail or tasting area. The utilitarian industrial setting contrasts with the growing cultural and social role of craft breweries as community hubs.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering London's craft beer movement, independent breweries, small-scale manufacturing, urban regeneration, food and drink culture, and the reuse of industrial estates by creative businesses in East London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDH2 - This image shows a blue heritage plaque commemorating Charles Dickens, mounted on the exterior wall of Tavistock House in the Bloomsbury area of central London. The plaque records that Dickens lived at or near this site between 1851 and 1860, a significant period in his literary career during the height of Victorian Britain.
Charles Dickens is widely regarded as one of the greatest English novelists, known for works such as Bleak House, Hard Times, Little Dorrit, and Great Expectations. His time at Tavistock House coincided with the production of several major novels and reflects his close association with London, a city that features prominently in his writing as both setting and subject.
Blue plaques form part of a long-established British tradition of marking buildings connected with notable historical figures, helping to preserve cultural memory within the urban landscape. Positioned on a stone facade beside an arched window, the plaque links everyday streetscapes with the literary and social history of the capital.
Photographed in daylight, the image emphasises the crisp blue-and-white enamel of the plaque against the pale masonry, making it well suited to editorial use covering English literature, literary heritage, historic London, famous writers, education, and cultural tourism in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDH7 - Editorial close-up photograph of the British Medical Association sign outside BMA House in Tavistock Square, Bloomsbury, central London, showing the words British Medical Association and BMA House in white serif lettering on a large black plaque fixed to a pale stone exterior wall. This image identifies the London headquarters closely associated with the BMA, the UK professional body and trade union for doctors and medical students, and a location regularly linked in news coverage to NHS pay disputes, doctors' industrial action, strike planning, contract negotiations, policy lobbying and wider debate over the future of the National Health Service. The formal composition, strong contrast and angled perspective make the sign highly readable and useful as an editorial stock photograph for stories about resident doctors, junior doctors, consultants, SAS doctors, NHS staffing pressures, workforce shortages, public sector employment disputes, union ballots, medical professionalism, workplace rights and healthcare politics in Britain. The tight framing excludes wider street context, placing full emphasis on institutional identity, public authority and the symbolism of a major representative body involved in high-profile disputes over pay, working conditions and health service reform. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7N - This dramatic black and white photograph shows an upward, low-angle view of Battersea Power Station, one of London's most powerful and recognisable industrial landmarks. The composition exaggerates the scale of the structure, with two of the iconic chimneys rising sharply into a turbulent sky, creating a sense of dominance, weight, and authority.
Built in the 20th century as a coal-fired power station, Battersea once supplied electricity to much of London and became a symbol of industrial strength and state power. The stark monochrome treatment strips away modern distractions, allowing the viewer to focus on texture, mass, and geometry. Heavy brickwork, vertical lines, and symmetry reinforce the building's imposing presence, while cloud formations heighten the atmosphere and drama.
Beyond its architectural importance, Battersea Power Station holds deep cultural significance due to its appearance on the cover of Animals by Pink Floyd, where an inflatable pig was famously flown between the chimneys. That image transformed the building into a global symbol of political critique, capitalism, and institutional power, linking industrial architecture with protest art and music history.
Now extensively redeveloped, the site stands at the intersection of heritage and regeneration, embodying both Britain's industrial past and its post-industrial transformation. This image, with its stark contrasts and confrontational viewpoint, is particularly well suited to editorial use exploring themes of power, industry, urban change, cultural memory, architecture, and the visual language of dissent.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7R - This image shows the Palace of Westminster, home to the UK Parliament, viewed from the River Thames in central London. The Gothic Revival complex dominates the skyline, with the Elizabeth Tower and the Victoria Tower rising above the riverside trees.
In the foreground, Lambeth Bridge spans the Thames, providing a strong visual lead-in across the river toward Westminster. The bridge connects the City of Westminster with Lambeth on the south bank and is a key transport crossing in this part of London.
The Palace of Westminster is one of the most recognisable symbols of British democracy and governance. Originally rebuilt in the 19th century after a catastrophic fire, it now serves as the meeting place for the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Its riverside setting reinforces the historic relationship between the Thames and the development of London as a political and administrative centre.
Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered clouds, the image combines heritage architecture, river transport, and urban infrastructure. It is well suited to editorial use covering British politics, government institutions, London landmarks, heritage tourism, constitutional history, and the River Thames as a defining feature of the capital.

The sign provides key travel details including departure time, destination, expected running time, intermediate calling points, and carriage class layout.
London Euston is one of Britain's principal long-distance rail termini, serving routes linking London with the Midlands, North West England, and Scotland. Digital information boards such as this are a central feature of modern railway operations, helping passengers navigate complex timetables and manage delays or platform changes.
The amber LED display is mounted beneath a station canopy, with steel and timber roof structures visible above, situating the scene firmly within a traditional British railway environment. The combination of historic station architecture and contemporary digital signage reflects the layered evolution of the UK rail network.
Photographed indoors under ambient station lighting, the image is well suited to editorial use covering rail transport, public infrastructure, commuting, long-distance travel, business journeys, and the everyday experience of Britain's railway stations.

The train carries prominent environmental branding reading Our Planet Means The World To Us, reflecting Avanti West Coast's sustainability and carbon-reduction messaging.
The Class 390 Pendolino fleet forms the backbone of high-speed electric intercity services linking London with the North West, West Midlands, North Wales, and Scotland. Known for their tilting capability, Pendolinos are designed to maintain higher speeds on curving mainline routes while remaining fully electric, reinforcing rail's role as a lower-carbon alternative to road and air travel.
The image's wide, side-on composition emphasises the length of the train and the bold green graphics applied across multiple carriages, making it particularly suitable for layouts requiring panoramic or banner-style imagery. The platform environment and partial station architecture situate the scene within an active mainline railway setting.
Photographed in daylight at platform level, the image is well suited to editorial use covering UK rail transport, sustainable travel, rolling-stock branding, climate messaging in public transport, and modern intercity rail operations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1TX3 - A bus stop sign displaying local bus route information in the village of Heptonstall, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The sign carries WY Metro branding and provides details of services running towards Blackshaw Head and Hebden Bridge, illustrating the role of scheduled bus transport in connecting rural Pennine communities.
Public transport signage such as this forms a vital part of everyday infrastructure in villages where access to private vehicles may be limited. Bus services linking Heptonstall with nearby settlements and rail connections help support employment, education, healthcare access, and social inclusion, particularly for older residents and those without cars.
The sign is mounted on a metal pole against a blue sky with light cloud, with overhead utility lines visible, reinforcing the rural village setting. The clear presentation of destinations and service information reflects the standardised approach to transport information across West Yorkshire.
Photographed in daylight, the image works as an editorial illustration of rural public transport, community connectivity, and the practical realities of mobility in Yorkshire villages.

The image shows the modern retail building with a glazed façade, internal lighting, and the distinctive Lidl logo illuminated against a fading evening sky.
Lidl is a major European discount supermarket chain with a significant presence across the UK, known for its focus on value pricing, private-label goods, and a limited-assortment retail model. Stores such as this form an important part of everyday local shopping infrastructure, serving surrounding residential communities and supporting town-centre and edge-of-centre retail provision.
Littleborough, a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, combines historic Pennine mill heritage with contemporary retail and residential development. The presence of national supermarket chains reflects broader patterns in UK retail geography, where accessible food shopping remains a key anchor for local economies.
The photograph captures the store during early evening trading hours, with artificial lighting contrasting against the soft twilight sky. Visible pedestrian crossings, entrance canopies, and car parking emphasise the practical, functional design typical of modern British supermarket architecture. The image works as an editorial illustration of UK food retail, consumer habits, and everyday urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGRW6T - The Tudor building on Church Street, Warrington is one of the town's oldest and most famous landmarks.
Here, we take a look at its centuries of fascinating history.
The grade two-listed building now houses an Indian restaurant aptly named the Cottage which opened following a lengthy, National Trust approved renovation of the premises in the early noughties.
Whilst frequently referred to as Cromwell's Cottage, Oliver Cromwell is only thought to have stayed the night at the now demolished General Wolf close by on August 20, 1648.
However, the cottage is where he sent dispatches proclaiming victories over Scottish Royalists during battles at Preston, Winwick and Warrington itself.
Today, a plaque commemorates that fact with Cromwell's victory at the Battle of Winwick Pass leading to the surrender of Scots forces on August 25.
The defeat of Royalist armies in the north of England ultimately hastened the end of the second English Civil War, and led to the execution of Charles I in January 1649.
It is believed that the cottage dates back to roughly the 16th century, according to a 2007 Warrington Borough Council report which states that the building was constructed in a late medieval style' after the road's original middle-age structures were destroyed.
Similar characteristics can be attributed to the other Tudor cottages on Church Street, with the nearby Bull's Head and Marquis of Granby pubs remaining as the street's oldest surviving buildings.

An IOU differs from a promissory note in that an IOU is not a negotiable instrument and does not specify repayment terms such as the time of repayment. IOUs usually specify the debtor, the amount owed, and sometimes the creditor. IOUs may be signed or carry distinguishing marks or designs to ensure authenticity. In some cases, IOUs may be redeemable for a specific product or service rather than a quantity of currency, constituting a form of scrip

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X75 - This image shows a self-service railway ticket machine operated by Avanti West Coast at Warrington Bank Quay railway station in Cheshire. Branded with the slogan Tickets to everywhere, the machine allows passengers to purchase and collect train tickets for journeys across the UK rail network.
The ticket vending machine supports the purchase of single and return fares, as well as ticket collection for journeys booked online, reflecting the growing shift toward automated and cashless ticketing in British railway stations. Card payment facilities, on-screen instructions, and integrated printers are designed to reduce queues at staffed ticket offices and improve passenger convenience.
Warrington Bank Quay is a major interchange station on the West Coast Main Line, serving long-distance intercity services linking London with the North West, North Wales, and Scotland. Self-service machines like this play an important role in managing high passenger volumes, particularly during peak travel periods.
Photographed indoors under station lighting, the image is well suited to editorial use covering UK rail transport, passenger services, ticketing technology, public transport modernisation, and the everyday experience of travelling by train on Britain's mainline railway network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBKW - The White Rose of York (Latinised as rosa alba, blazoned as a rose argent) is a white heraldic rose which was adopted in the 14th century as a heraldic badge of the royal House of York. In modern times it is used more broadly as a symbol of Yorkshire.
The symbolism of the white rose has religious connotations as (like the white lily) it represents the purity of the Virgin Mary, one of whose many titles in the Roman Catholic faith is the Mystical Rose of Heaven. In Christian liturgical iconography white is the symbol of light, typifying innocence, purity, joy and glory.
The white rose was first adopted as a heraldic badge by Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York (13411402), the fourth surviving son of King Edward III of England. One of his elder brothers, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (13401399) adopted a red rose as a heraldic badge, the red rose of Lancaster. Their respective descendants fought for control of the throne of England during several decades of civil warfare, which became known as the Wars of the Roses, after the badges of the two competing cadet royal houses.
The Tudor Rose of England
The Wars of the Roses were ended by King Henry VII of England who, upon marrying Elizabeth of York, symbolically but not politically, united the White and Red Roses to create the Tudor Rose, the symbol of the English Monarchy. In the late 17th century the Jacobites took up the White Rose of York as their emblem, celebrating White Rose Day on 10 June, the anniversary of the birth of The Old Pretender in 1688
In heraldry The Rose of York is blazoned as A rose argent barbed and seeded proper (a white rose with sepals and seeds in their natural colours). According to the College of Heralds, the heraldic rose may be used with either a petal at the top or if slightly rotated with a sepal at the top. Traditionally the rose is displayed with a petal at the top in the North Riding and West Riding but with a sepal at the top in the East Riding of Yorkshire

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X4D - This image shows a close-up view of a cast iron utility grid embossed with the words Yorkshire Water. The surface displays heavy rusting and weathering, with strong geometric patterns and raised lettering visible across the metal.
Grids and covers of this type form part of the underground water and drainage infrastructure managed by Yorkshire Water, one of the regional water and wastewater providers in England. Such access points allow inspection and maintenance of buried systems that support clean water supply and wastewater management.
The visible corrosion and patina reflect long-term exposure to weather, foot traffic, and vehicle loads, highlighting both the durability of cast iron and the ageing condition of much UK utility infrastructure. Although largely unnoticed by the public, these installations are essential to everyday urban and suburban life.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, typography, and material decay, the image works well as editorial material illustrating public utilities, infrastructure resilience, industrial design, and the often-overlooked physical fabric of water services in Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6C9BG - Hackney could be called the chicken shop capital of London, the love of spicy wings or thighs a common service
Greasy chicken bones litter the streets like cigarette butts in a borough caught by Kentucky fried fever. Abdal Khan, of Chicken and Pizza' on Amhurst Road, dubbed Hackney the chicken capital of the world and it's hard to see otherwise.
The growing abundance of fried food shops is underlined by the fact that there are now more than two for each secondary school in the borough.
The shops centre on Stoke Newington and other districts with the right demographics. These are targeted operations not just random start ups.
Residents should be careful though when ordering their wings, many chicken shops have a poor food rating. Dixy Chicken' in Hackney Central, one of the 20 takeaways listed on the database, has a paltry one out of five star rating, indicating that the establishment is failing to comply fully with Britain's food hygiene laws.
A 25-year-old Hackney fried chicken shop worker of five years, spoke of the industry's bad practice.
After cooking a piece of battered chicken, you can only serve it within an hour, but staff leave it on a low heat all day, creating a breeding ground for bacteria, he said.
They do it to cut costs and get the most out of their stock.
It should be noted that the problem is not limited to chicken shops. There are around 160 fried food takeaways in the area, which equals eight per square kilometre. With this concentration, residents are never more than a 10 minute walk away from a deep-fried treat. A chicken and chips meal will set you back £1, making it a clucking good deal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K244C1 - Vintage Post Office Savings Bank advertising poster displayed inside a public telephone box kiosk, urging people to Take them to the Post Office Savings Bank and Support the New Savers Campaign. The image shows an aged, weathered public information advert behind glass, with a child's face, a blue money bag marked Savings, halftone printing, fading colours and the worn red metal frame of the kiosk interior. It is a strong documentary image for themes of thrift, personal saving, family finance, children's savings, public service advertising, postal history, telephone box interiors and mid twentieth-century British graphic design. The Post Office Savings Bank was founded in 1861 as a state-backed savings scheme intended to encourage ordinary people to save, and NS&I records this as the beginning of its own history. Later changes separated National Savings from the Post Office, but the poster reflects the earlier period when savings services were heavily associated with Post Office branches and everyday civic infrastructure. The image may be useful for editorial features on household budgeting, post-war savings culture, state-backed savings, children's money habits, public finance, social history, old advertising, GPO heritage, phone boxes, postal services, government campaigns and changing attitudes to thrift. The telephone kiosk setting adds nostalgic value, linking two once-familiar parts of British public life: the red phone box and the local Post Office as a place for saving, communication and public administration. The faded surface and damaged poster give the photograph an archive-like feel, suggesting a surviving remnant of a campaign that promoted prudence, security and responsible saving to families. It can also support stories about the decline of cash-based saving habits, the move from branch services to digital finance, and the way public spaces once carried official messages about money, citizenship and self-reliance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0GF9G - On Penny Lane There is a Barber..
In his iconic song, Paul McCartney sang about the barbers where the Beatles used to get their hair cut in Liverpool. The barber shop, Bioletti's, like nearly all of the places referred to in the song, was not on Penny Lane itself but on Smithdown Place, overlooking the roundabout' with the bus shelter.
A change of ownership meant that Bioletti's became Tony Slavin's, but it is still a barber shop (and now also a ladies salon). Where else could you have your hair done at a reasonable price and share in Beatles history at the same time?
The Ladies salon (upstairs) used to be a flat in the Beatles' days, but the barber shop downstairs still looks much the same as when the Beatles used to sit and wait for a trim.
Beatles fans are always welcome either to have their hair done in the same place as the Beatles
.. or to stop and say hello. Visitors are welcome to look around, take photographs, and sit in the barbers' chairs. In return, donations for the Linda McCartney Centre are gratefully accepted. There are also some unique souvenirs available to buy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTK73T - St Mary's Church, or St Mary's Priory, is in the town centre of Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building, and is an active Catholic church. The parish was established and served by Benedictine monks from Ampleforth Abbey, but following the withdrawal of Ampleforth Abbey from the parish in 2012, it was served by the priest from St Benedict's Church, Warrington. From November 2015, the church has been owned and served by priests from the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP) as a shrine church dedicated to the celebration of the sacraments of the pre-Vatican II form of the Roman Rite. It is well known for the beauty and reverence of its liturgy.
The parish was established from St Alban's Church, Warrington by the Benedictine priests
The church was designed by E. W. Pugin and its construction started in 1875, just before Pugin's death. It was completed by Peter Paul Pugin in 1877
The church was opened on Thursday 30 August 1877. The splendid reredos and rose window were blessed on 1 November 1885. The very tall and slender southwest tower, a departure from the original design, was designed by Pugin & Pugin and built by Travis & Wevill of Liverpool in 1907. A northeast chapel, the First World War Memorial Chapel, designed by Frederick Walters was added in 1923
built in pale Pierpoint stone and red Runcorn sandstone. The church is in Decorated style

The Health and Medicines Act 1988 allows the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to provide, and charge for, various services for the purpose of income generation for the NHS. The Department of Health's guidance on Income generation in the NHS (2006) provides that income generation activities of which charging for car parking is one must be profitable and cannot use NHS funding to subsidise their costs.
NHS England has issued non-mandatory guidance on NHS patient, visitor and staff car parking management (updated October 2015). This suggests concessions for the following groups:

Additional information on parking policy in England can be found in the Library briefings Blue badges and parking for disabled people in England and Parking policy in England.
Section 1 details the temporary suspension of parking charges due to the Coronavirus outbreak across the UK.
England
The Health and Medicines Act 1988 allows the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to provide, and charge for, various services for the purpose of income generation for the NHS. The Department of Health's guidance on Income generation in the NHS (2006) provides that income generation activities of which charging for car parking is one must be profitable and cannot use NHS funding to subsidise their costs.
NHS England has issued non-mandatory guidance on NHS patient, visitor and staff car parking management (updated October 2015). This suggests concessions for the following groups:
-disabled people
-people who attend frequent outpatient appointments
-visitors with relatives who are gravely ill
-visitors to (and carers of) people who have an extended stay in hospital
-carers of people in the above groups
-staff working shifts when no public transport is available

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJM7HA - Since 2011, B&M Waste Services have achieved carbon neutrality to the British Standards Industry (BSI)'s Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 2060. In the last 8 years, we have offset just under 20,000 tonnes CO2e by supporting projects in the UK and across the globe. These include supporting UK tree planting in schools and other locations, as well as Landfill Gas Recovery Programmes in Turkey and Indonesia. Also, we have supported a biogas project in Vietnam, renewable energy projects in India, China and Brazil as well as an Avoiding Deforestation Project in Brazil. Within the developing countries, we have supported education and welfare as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This year our 8th year of carbon neutrality we will offset our carbon emissions through a UK Tree Planting and Protecting the Amazon Programme. For each tCO2e offset, one tree is planted in the UK and an additional tCO2e is offset through the Brazilian Amazon Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) project to guarantee the emission reductions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJM7HP - A blue promotional sign for the Motability Scheme displayed at a UK car dealership, photographed in a car park filled with new vehicles. The sign promotes the scheme's core message of independence and mobility, highlighting access to a new car through the use of a qualifying mobility allowance, alongside services such as insurance, servicing and breakdown cover.
The Motability Scheme is a long-established UK programme that enables disabled people to lease a car, wheelchair accessible vehicle or powered wheelchair using their government mobility allowance. It is widely used and has played a significant role in improving independence, access to employment and participation in everyday life for hundreds of thousands of people across the UK.
At the same time, the scheme has periodically attracted public and political scrutiny, with critics arguing that elements of the programme may be overly generous, particularly in relation to vehicle choice, cost to the public purse and the level of subsidy involved. Media and policy debates have questioned whether tighter controls, clearer eligibility thresholds or greater transparency are needed to ensure value for money while still protecting disabled people's independence.
Supporters of the scheme counter that access to reliable transport is essential rather than optional for many disabled people, and that the scheme's scale allows for efficiencies that would not otherwise be available through individual vehicle ownership. The Motability programme therefore sits at the centre of wider discussions about welfare provision, disability rights, public spending and social inclusion in the UK.
Photographed in daylight with dealership stock visible in the background, the image offers strong editorial value for coverage of disability policy, welfare debates, transport accessibility, public subsidy and the intersection of social support and private industry.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH5AKR - Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards
During the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency developed a set of playing cards to help troops identify the most-wanted members of President Saddam Hussein's government, mostly high-ranking members of the Iraqi Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party or members of the Revolutionary Command Council
among them were some of Hussein's family members. The cards were officially named the personality identification playing cards. As of 2021, all but 4 of the 52 most wanted have been either killed or captured, eleven of whom have been released.
Each card contains the wanted person's address and, if available, the job performed by that individual. The highest-ranking cards, starting with the aces and kings, were used for the people at the top of the most-wanted list. The ace of spades is Saddam Hussein, the aces of clubs and hearts are his sons Qusay and Uday respectively, and the ace of diamonds is Saddam's presidential secretary Abid Hamid Mahmud al-Tikriti. This strict correspondence to the order of the most-wanted list was not carried through the entire deck, but sometime later in 2003, the list itself was renumbered to conform (almost) to the deck of cards. The card backs feature camouflage reminiscent of that seen on the Desert Camouflage Uniform.
According to US Navy Lieutenant commander Jim Brooks, a spokesman for the Defense Intelligence Agency, such playing cards have been used as far back as the American Civil War & again in World War IIArmy Air Corps decks printed with the silhouettes of German and Japanese fighter aircraft fetch hundreds of dollars todayand in the Korean War. Troops often play cards to pass the time, seeing the names, faces and titles of the wanted Iraqis during their games will help soldiers and Marines in case they run into the wanted individuals in the field.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J32 - This image shows a traditional pawnbroker sign featuring the three golden balls, photographed in Leigh town centre in Greater Manchester. The golden spheres hang from a decorative wrought iron bracket, a visual symbol that has been associated with pawnbroking and collateral-based lending in Britain for centuries.
The three golden balls are widely recognised as representing the services historically offered by pawnbrokers, including short-term loans secured against personal possessions. Such signage remains a familiar feature of many UK high streets, particularly in town centres where independent financial services operate alongside mainstream retail.
Also visible in the image is a modern CCTV security camera mounted nearby, creating a visual contrast between historic commercial symbolism and contemporary urban surveillance. The inclusion of the camera reflects current concerns around retail security, crime prevention, and public monitoring in town-centre environments.
Photographed in daylight against a vivid blue sky, the image isolates the sign and camera from surrounding buildings, emphasising form, colour, and meaning. It is well suited to editorial use covering British high streets, local finance, pawnbroking, economic life, surveillance culture, town-centre retail, and social commentary on money and security in the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J3K - This image shows exterior signage for the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Breakthrough Church, located on St George's Road in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The sign prominently displays the church name, service times, and contact details, serving both as wayfinding and as an invitation to the local community.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God is a global Pentecostal Christian denomination founded in Nigeria and now established across the UK, Europe, and North America. RCCG congregations often play an important role within African and wider Christian communities, providing spiritual support as well as social and community activities.
The Bolton Breakthrough Church operates regular Sunday and midweek worship services, reflecting the vibrant and structured nature of Pentecostal church life. The signage also highlights the church's urban setting, positioned within a mixed-use town-centre environment behind metal railings and adjacent to modern commercial buildings.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering religion in Britain, Pentecostal Christianity, African diaspora communities, urban churches, faith-based organisations, and contemporary religious life in UK towns and cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFXKG9 - The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Max Verstappen took the lead at the start from Carlos Sainz Jr., while Lewis Hamilton moved up to third. George Russell had a bad start and was passed by Nicholas Latifi and Zhou Guanyu pulled alongside him leaving a large gap between them. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left too late to close the gap causing his left rear tyre to make contact with Gasly's right front. Gasly backed out but the impact pointed Russell's car to the left shooting him across the track and directly into the side of Zhou's car. The impact launched Zhou's car into the air. He landed upside down, skidding down the track, then skipping and bouncing across the long gravel trap at the end of the straightaway, all while barely slowing and turning sideways. The inverted car suddenly dug into the gravel carrying sufficient speed and momentum to launch it over the tire barrier, rotating 540 degrees on its axis before hitting the catch fencing sideways facing up just a few feet from the front row of the grandstand. It then dropped 8 feet and landed wedged into the small gap between the fence and tire barrier, stopping on its side with the cockpit up against the backside of the tire barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, damaging both of their cars. Tsunoda and Ocon both returned to the pit lane for repairs, but Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car it was not running so he could not continue.
Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes. Zhou was extracted from his Alfa Romeo and stretchered to an ambulance

Rail union RMT launch 3 days of national strike action across the railway network.
Over 50,000 railway workers will walkout as part of 3 days of national strike action later this month, in the biggest dispute on the network since 1989.
The union will shut down the country's railway network on 21st, 23rd and 25th June, due to the inability of the rail employers to come to a negotiated settlement with RMT.
Network Rail and the train operating companies have subjected their staff to multiyear pay freezes and plan to cut thousands of jobs which will make the railways unsafe.
Despite intense talks with the rail bosses, The RMT has not been able to secure a pay proposal nor a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J92PEP - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.
During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Following these changes, Avanti West Coast was subject to public criticism
news stories emerged of numerous train cancellations, overcrowded services, delays, and expensive fares. Many commuters faced difficulties reaching their destinations on the reduced services and some travellers have been left to wait for to two days before travel for tickets to be released for sale

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T328 - The Trust was formed in 2017 by like-minded leaders of local primary and secondary schools in Warrington along with Priestley College.
Our intention was to work collaboratively to improve outcomes for children and young people in the Warrington area and this collective responsibility is one we maintain to this day.
Our mission is to serve, challenge and empower the educational community. We enact our mission by providing highly effective services to our academies, supporting strong leadership, investing in the workforce and inspiring our children and young people.
All of our work is underpinned by a set of core values, they are:
Inclusivity and social justice
Educational excellence
Collaboration and interdependence
Challenge and service
Care and sustainability
Celebrating difference
These values inform everything we do as a trust and all of our services and working practices are designed around these concepts.
TCAT is a unique trust, being the first in the country to include primary and secondary academies together with a sixth form college.
TCAT also includes a Church of England High School, Sir Thomas Boteler, whose faith foundation is assured through representation from the Dioceses of Chester and Liverpool.
As an inclusive MAT with a strong moral purpose we are committed to providing an environment and education where every young person is nurtured, challenged and inspired to achieve the very best for themselves and their communities. Young people are at the heart of everything we do.
There are currently 10 academies within the trust including four primary academies, three with nurseries, five secondary academies and a sixth form college.
We have close to 8,000 children and young people in our care along with around 1,000 staff.
This may seem like a huge number of people, however we pride ourselves on maintaining an intimacy within this which is built upon positive and professional relationships.

They have absolutely loved it, it's made people smile when everyone is worried and miserable at the moment it's been really uplifting and it looks great.
Hexel was first set up as a computer shop on Cairo Street in the town centre in 1996 before moving to its current home around 15 years ago, making it one of Warrington's longest established IT firms.
It took Craig, his wife Pandy and two of the company's engineers roughly a week to paint the side of the building before work was completed yesterday, Wednesday, with a few finishing touches.
He added: It's probably taken us about a week to paint the rainbow all in all.
The Union Jack was quite a landmark that everyone knew, so I didn't want to lose that.
I can't believe it's eight years ago since we did it, that made everyone smile as well.
People are always saying are you the place with the Union Jack on it?'.
It might come back at some point in a year or two when all of this is over.
I've got plenty of rainbow paint leftover if anybody needs any.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CBET91 - Sterling banknotes are the banknotes in circulation in the United Kingdom and its related territories, denominated in pounds sterling (symbol: £
ISO 4217 currency code GBP [Great Britain pound]).
Sterling banknotes are official currency in the United Kingdom, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, British Antarctic Territory, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and Tristan da Cunha in St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. One pound is equivalent to 100 pence. Three British Overseas Territories also have currencies called pounds which are at par with the pound sterling.
The Bank of England has a monopoly of banknote issuance in England and Wales but, for historic reasons, three banks in Scotland and four banks in Northern Ireland are permitted to issue their own currency but the law requires that the issuing banks hold a sum of Bank of England banknotes (or gold) equivalent to the total value of notes issued. Versions of the pound sterling issued by Crown dependencies and other areas are regulated only by local governments and not the Bank of England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEJ3J - In the times before you could buy a ruler in your local stationers or a tape measure in a hardware store, people estimated the length of objects from the lengths of parts of their body. For example:
(i) An inch is roughly the length of the end of your thumb (i.e. from the joint to its end)
(ii) A foot is what you would expect, i.e. the length of a foot, originally the length of the Kings foot.
(iii) A yard was a Bowmans pull (i.e. from your breastbone to your hand).
Such rules of thumb are adequate if all that is required is a rough estimate of the length of an object, but you can imagine the arguments that would ensue if you were buying or selling cloth for example. If you are selling cloth you would make the most profit if you used someone with short arms as your measure, however if you are a tailor buying cloth, you would prefer someone with long arms! To ensure fair trading, standards of measurements were provided in public places in towns and cities throughout the UK.
The chain is the unit of measure used by surveyors, as recently as 50 years ago a young apprentice surveyor was sent to George Square to check the length of his company's chain against the length of the standard chain. In the days before metrication every child had to learn 3 feet make a yard, 22 yards make a chain, 10 chains make a furlong and 8 furlongs make a mile.
There are three sets of measurement standards to be found in George Square:
(a) The standard inch, foot, 2 foot, and 3 foot are mounted on the wall of the City Chambers (locate them on the right hand side of the entrance to the City Chambers as you face the building with your back to the Square).
(b) There is a standard chain with its links in the Square (locate these between the benches and the grassed area on the east side of square.)
(c) 100 feet. (Again these are located beside the benches, this time at the grassed area at the west side.)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEJ3X - Wellpark Brewery is a brewery in Duke Street in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland.
It was founded in 1740 on the bank of the Molendinar Burn by Hugh and Robert Tennent. It is owned by C&C Group plc, which purchased the Tennent Caledonian Breweries subsidiary in late August 2009 from Belgian brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev (formerly known as InBev).
The company produces Tennent's Lager, Scotland's market leading brand of pale lager since it was first produced at the Wellpark Brewery in 1885.
Wellpark Brewery was originally known as the Drygate Brewery. It was founded as H & R Tennent in 1740 at Drygate Bridge, near Glasgow Cathedral, by Hugh and Robert Tennent, although brewing had taken place at the same site on the banks of the Molendinar Burn by their ancestor, Robert Tennent, since 1556, making it the oldest continuous commercial concern in Glasgow.
Hugh Tennent's sons, John and Robert, continued the family business, trading as J & R Tennent from 1769. The business expanded in the 1790s when the Tennent family purchased the neighbouring brewery of William McLehose, and renamed the 5-acre (20,000 m2) site Wellpark Brewery.
The firm originally brewed stout and strong export ales. By the mid-19th century J&R Tennent was the world's largest bottled beer exporter. Robert Tennent died in 1826 and John Tennent in 1827. Hugh Tennent (the eldest son of Robert) then assumed control of the business. Hugh Tennent retired in 1855 with his fifth son, Charles Tennent, taking over, but he died in 1864, some months before his father. The brewery was subsequently operated by trustees on behalf of Charles Tennent's sons, Archibald and Hugh.
In 1884 Hugh Tennent took control of the company and first brewed Tennent's lager in 1885. He later built a new lager brewery on the Wellpark site, which was begun in 1889 and completed in 1891. J&R Tennent produced the first draught lager in 1924, the first canned lager in 1935 and the first keg lager in 1963.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A989X2 - Appleton Thorn is a village in the borough of Warrington in Cheshire, England.
Appleton appeared in the Domesday survey as Epeltune, meaning the tun where the apples grew.
Bawming the Thorn
Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the 19th century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the village hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was revived by the then headmaster, Mr Bob Jones in the early 1970s. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day.
Local schoolchildren dance around the tree in the style of a maypole chanting verses to the tune of Bonnie Dundee, with the following repeated chorus:
Up with fresh garlands this midsummer morn,
Up with red ribbons on Appleton Thorn.
Come lasses and lads to the Thorn Tree today
To bawm it and shout as ye bawm it Hurray!
Bawming means decorating during the ceremony the thorn tree is decorated with ribbons and garlands. According to legend, the hawthorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was itself said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who arranged for Jesus's burial after the crucifixion. Thorn Cross (HM Prison) is in Appleton Thorn, on the site formerly occupied by Royal Naval Air Station HMS Blackcap, a wartime aircrew training and aircraft repair airfield. There are a number of graves of aircrew who died at HMS Blackcap, mainly in flying accidents, in St Cross churchyard, known locally as the war graves.

The town's MP spent Sunday at the scene along with Environment Agency staff, speaking to residents and businesses who had been impacted by the flooding.
He has now written to the Environment Agency and Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers calling for an urgent probe into the flooding. Waitrose car park was flooded.
Mike said: This has had a devastating impact on many local residents and it's clear questions need to be answered about what happened.
Environment Agency and council staff on the ground did a fantastic job at the scene, but in terms of the wider picture we need to know how this happened so we can ensure it doesn't happen again.
Flood defences were put to the test in July 2018.
New £7m defences were installed in June 2017, after costly floods hit the town centre which sits at the the confluence of the rivers Weaver and Dane in 2000 and again in 2012.
While the first phase of demountable barriers was put up on Friday night, Waitrose car park and Dane Street flooded on Saturday with photos showing drains in the road struggling to cope.

Hayhurst Quay marina was evacuated, with a 65-year-old man rescued from the water overnight and another man taken to hospital with suspected hypothermia.

Daresbury was the birthplace of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll, in All Saints' Vicarage. Daresbury has a Lewis Carroll Visitor Centre and the parish church, All Saints, a Lewis Carroll window, including an image of the Cheshire Cat.Lewis Carroll as born 27 January 1832 14 January 1898.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel by English author Lewis Carroll (the pseudonym of Charles Dodgson). It tells of a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a subterranean fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children.
The Daniell Chapel contains one of the best-known features of All Saints', the Lewis Carroll Memorial Window. To mark the centenary of his birth, Carroll enthusiasts from all over the world subscribed to a memorial fund, which resulted in a gift to All Saints' of this striking and unusual stained glass window, dedicated in 1935.
The window was designed by the stained glass artist Geoffrey Webb and depicts a Nativity scene, at which both Carroll and Alice are present. Below the Nativity scene are 5 panels illustrated with characters and scenes from Alice in Wonderland including the White Rabbit, the Lizard, the Dodo, the Caterpillar, Fish-Footman, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, March Hare, Duchess, Gryphon, Mock Turtle, Knave and Queen of Hearts. The famous Cheshire Cat can be found in the centre of the fifth panel. The 3 centre panels contain verses from the Lewis Carroll's poem Christmas Greetings (From a Fairy to a Child)'.
Geoffrey Webb's mark was a spider's web that he would incorporate into the design of his windows. The web can be found in the fifth section of the Window, just above the Queen of Hearts and includes the date 1935'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X6K - Patisserie Valerie is a chain of cafés that operates in the United Kingdom. The chain specialises in cakes, and its menu included continental breakfasts, lunches and teas and coffees. The company went into administration in January 2019, prior to a management buyout funded by Causeway Capital Partners.
According to Helene (Leni) Vermeirsch, the niece of the founders, Patisserie Valerie was first opened in 1926 on the corner of Dean Street and Old Compton Street in Soho, London by Esther van Gyseghem, born in Ostende, Belgium on 22 April 1900 and her husband Theophile (Theo) Vermeirsch. There is not known to have been a Valerie in the founders' families, but Esther came to be referred to as Madame Valerie.
The chain has expanded rapidly since 2006, growing from eight shops in 2006 to 192 as of May 2017. It opened its first shop in the Republic of Ireland in 2017, in Debenhams in Blanchardstown Centre.
In April 2014 the company announced plans to raise £33m on the London Alternative Investment Market, using the sum to reduce its debt.
Trading in the shares of Patisserie Holdings, the parent company of Patisserie Valerie, were suspended on 10 October 2018 following the discovery of potentially fraudulent accounting irregularities, which had led to the possibility that there had been a material mis-statement of the company's accounts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AF866H - The K4 kiosk was designed by the Engineering Department of the General Post Office. It used the successful design of the K2 kiosk, by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, expanded to include a post box and stamp machine
it was an automated mini-Post Office. The K4 kiosk was enormous and was half as big again as the K2 kiosk. The K4 was introduced in limited numbers in Britain and production ceased within five years. Only 5 examples remain and are given Grade II listing status by English Heritage.
Design
The K4 kiosk is constructed of cast-iron sections, standing on a concrete base. The footprint of the K4 is rectangular, with one axis half as large again as the other. In form the K4 is a cuboid with a domed roof. Each side has fluted architrave moldings at the outer edge. At the base is a blank rectangular panel with trim molding-surround. Three sides of the kiosk are glazed with six rows of three rectangular panes of glass, edged with reeded moldings
on the longer sides there is an extra panel with trim molding to break up the mass.
Between 1930 and 1935 only 50 examples of the K4 were installed. They remain a very rare sight. There are only 5 (10% of all K4 kiosks) separate listings for the K4 kiosk with English Heritage, and none elsewhere in Britain. These K4s are all outside London, in Bewdley (Worcestershire), Roos (East Yorkshire), Frodsham (Cheshire) and Warrington (Cheshire). Of the eight kiosk types introduced by the General Post Office, the K4 was the six-most populous type introduced, but the joint fourth-most populous type in terms of surviving kiosks. New development not that far from me, from Barratt Homes, Appleton Grange, eating up a bit more green belt. Personally, I can live with that if the appropriate infrastructure (roads, schools etc) are arranged to support it and a mix of tenures (including some affordable (small a) help locals, especially young ones to get on the housing ladder, if they want to.
Based on the Trustpilot reviews, I am unsure if Barratt would be one of my first goto builders however - uk.trustpilot.com/review/barrattdevelopments.co.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTK0 - Edinburgh College is opening what is claimed to be Scotland's first solar meadow.
The five-acre site, at the Midlothian campus in Dalkeith, features more than 2,500 photo-voltaic panels.
Its designed and installed by energy company SSE - would cut its fuel bills.
It will also help to train engineering students and to research the impact on electrical output of environmental factors such as the weather.
Professor Steve Tinsley oversaw the solar meadow project
But we have produced a fantastic project here, he said.
Up to this point, Scotland produces 500 kW of solar PV energy. With this project we have now trebled that.
Richard Chandler, SSE's head of Green Deal and Energy Solutions, said: The Solar Meadow will generate enough energy to power 170 homes.
It's also a fine example of how industry and education can work well together.
This project will bring benefits to the college, its students and the wider community as well as further strengthening Scotland's renewable energy resources.
Alana Beaton, from Inverness, who is studying electrical engineering at the college, said she was hoping the college would be able to use the project as an outdoor classroom to help her get a job in the industry.
Having the solar meadow available means that we're going to have hands-on experience with green energy, she said.
We know fossil fuels are slowly running out, so green energy is the way forward.
Myth busting
The site, at what used to be the former Jewel and Esk college until the merger which created Edinburgh College six months ago, is one of the most northerly solar power installations in Europe.
Research there will focus on the interplay between biodiversity and solar technology. To help that the entire site will be planted with wild grasses and flowers.
Professor Tinsley said: This is a significant research facility, and we've had conversations with various universities on how we use it, and attract funding for future projects.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY2N - The cultivation of the domesticated grape began 6,0008,000 years ago in the Near East. Yeast, one of the earliest domesticated microorganisms, occurs naturally on the skins of grapes, leading to the discovery of alcoholic drinks such as wine. The earliest archeological evidence for a dominant position of wine-making in human culture dates from 8,000 years ago in Georgia. The oldest known winery was found in Armenia, dating to around 4000 BC.
By the 9th century AD the city of Shiraz was known to produce some of the finest wines in the Middle East. Thus it has been proposed that Syrah red wine is named after Shiraz, a city in Persia where the grape was used to make Shirazi wine. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics record the cultivation of purple grapes, and history attests to the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, and Romans growing purple grapes for both eating and wine production. The growing of grapes would later spread to other regions in Europe, as well as North Africa, and eventually in North America.
In North America, native grapes belonging to various species of the genus Vitis proliferate in the wild across the continent, and were a part of the diet of many Native Americans, but were considered by European colonists to be unsuitable for wine. Vitis vinifera cultivars were imported for that purpose.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY2P - Grappenhall Cricket Club played its first game in 1881 on a ground in Bellhouse Lane. The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed.
From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.
In 1982, the 1st XI went one better, this time winning the league and cup double with the HC Cup Final being one of a number of appearances the club mate at Old Trafford in the 80's.
The double was repeated in 1987 with another appearance at Old Trafford, this time with the team including another future Lancashire star and future Grappers captain in Steve Titchard. In the same season, the 2nd XI also tasted success by winning the Worthington Cup.
There were a number of other cup successes for the club during this period for the different senior and junior teams, with many a memorable game taking place and the tales still being regaled today.
In 1992, the club were in their last season in Manchester Association before a move to the CCCL

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P9MF43 - Club History - Rowing returns to the River Mersey in Warrington
The sport of rowing in Warrington may well be traced back some 200 years but the modern era of rowing on the Mersey started in the autumn of 1985 when Andy Greenwell crept up the river in his single sculling boat to see if the river was a suitable stretch of water to row on. He came back with tales of a beautiful wide river with a few big bends and plenty of stream. The main advantage was that nobody else had the slightest bit of interest in using a river that had in its recent history been the dirtiest river in Europe. In the early part of the 20th century the town of Warrington had turned its back on The River Mersey.
Just before Andy's adventure on The Mersey, the local branch of the Rotary Club decided to stage an event on the river, to promote its existence and possibilities to the people of Warrington. A committee led by Rotary Chairman Kevin Donoghue with the help of George Fair, was put together to stage the aquatic extravaganza. They met at The Appleton Thorn Pub, a regular haunt of several members of Northwich Rowing Club. It was during one of these meetings that Richard Sinnott was drafted onto the committee as he, Andy Monks and Phil Fletcher were meeting in the same room for a post training drink. Richard quickly persuaded the committee to make the event a full blown rowing regatta, confident that he could get local clubs to come and try a new stretch of water.
At this stage the local regional rowing council got wind of the idea and gate crashed the party. Warrington had been identified as an area for development and the interest being shown in a regatta was exactly what they had been looking for. The then President of The Amateur Rowing Association, Neil Thomas had worked for many years in Warrington and he was delighted to see signs of interest in the town. The Rotary led committee invited the local regional rowing council to get involved

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has revealed a significant increase in houses planned for the Green Belt, and yet most of these houses will be unaffordable to those who need them.
Based on local and city-regional planning policies and new data from planning consultants Glenigan, CPRE's annual Green Belt Under Siege report shows that more than 70% of houses proposed for development are not expected to be affordable'. It also demonstrates that just 16% of houses built on Green Belt land since 2009 outside local plans were classed as affordable'.
In total, 425,000 houses are now planned for Green Belt land. This is an increase of 54% on March 2016, and the biggest year-on-year increase in building proposed in the Green Belt for two decades. Green Belt in the North West, West Midlands and South East is under particular pressure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EDNT - Emmeline Pankhurst is moored on the non-towing path side of the main line of the Bridgewater Canal just out of Castlefield Basin (the junction of the Rochdale and Bridgewater Canals). The wharf can be reached by car by turning off Liverpool Road at Potato Wharf (the narrow slightly inconspicuous street just below and opposite the Museum of Science & Industry, behind the Castlefield Hotel).
Alternatively it is an easy walk from Deansgate train station or Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop which are adjacent to each other (bottom-right of map). You need to walk via Liverpool Street and Potato Wharf (street) because access to the boat directly from Castlefield Basin is not possible.
To reach the boat go on foot to the junction with Potato Wharf (~30yds from the side street above) and walk to the end of the paved pedestrian area which faces the junction, keeping towards the right. Cross the bridge over the canal arm, head diagonally right to go through a gate to the canal and turn left along the bank to find the trip boat.
Emmeline Pankhurst is owned by City Centre Cruises in Manchester who are offering a 10% discount to IWA Members for their Sunday lunch cruise.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY00RP - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse.[3] The foundations of this church were discovered during the 187374 restoration.[4]
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel.
The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 187374 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000

The building was previously known as the Palace Hotel.
The first phase of this Grade II* listed red brick and terracotta building was designed for the Refuge Assurance Company by Alfred Waterhouse and built 18911895. The inside was of Burmantofts faience and glazed brick. The ground floor was one enormous open business hall.
It was extended, with a striking 217-foot (66 m) tower, along Oxford Street by his son Paul Waterhouse in 19101912. It was further extended along Whitworth Street by Stanley Birkett in 1932.
After occupying the building as offices for nearly a century, the Refuge Assurance Company departed the building for a new purpose site in the grounds of Fulshaw Hall, Cheshire on Friday 6 November 1987. The Refuge Assurance company had discussed converting the building into a new home for the Hallé Orchestra with one of Manchester's cultural patrons Sir Bob Scott for over a year. The £3 million funding required for the project did not materialise and the Halle subsequently moved from the Free Trade Hall to the new Bridgewater Hall upon opening in 1996.
Local architecture critic John Parkinson-Bailey noted that one of the most prestigious and expensive buildings in Manchester lay forlorn and empty except for a caretaker and the ghost on its staircase. It was converted to a hotel by Richard Newman in 1996 at a cost of £7 million, and was named the Palace Hotel, owned and operated by the Principal Hotel Company. The hotel is purported to be haunted. With increased tram traffic brought about by the expansion of the Metrolink network, it became necessary to build a new route across Manchester City Centre to alleviate congestion and improve capacity.
Known as the Second City Crossing (or 2CC), the project involved laying 0.8 miles (1.3 km) of tram tracks from St Peter's Square tram stop via Princess Street, Albert Square, Cross Street and Corporation Street to rejoin the original Metrolink line just before Victoria station. One new tram stop was built at Exchange Square. The project also involved re-ordering St Peter's Square and re-siting the Cenotaph to accommodate an enlarged tram interchange and junction. Construction began in 2014 and the 2CC route opened fully in February 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4H5 - Holy Trinity Church, Wood Green, is a Grade II listed Victorian church in Witney, Oxfordshire.
The Church was built in 18489, on land given by the bishop of Winchester and the duke of Marlborough
the cost was met largely from subscriptions, and a gift from the rector Charles Jerram. The architect was Benjamin Ferrey.
The church of squared and coursed limestone with ashlar quoins and dressings and a gabled stone slate roof. There is a two-bay chancel with pointed moulded doorway and Caernarvon-arched window. The five-bay nave has offset buttresses, lancets and two-light windows in each east bay.
An organ was installed in 1860, and new choir stalls and altar rails were fitted in 1869. In 1887 the vestry was enlarged to designs by Clapton Crabb Rolfe, and in 1895 an organ by Charles Martin of Oxford replaced the earlier one.
A new pulpit was fitted in 1909 in memory of Samuel and Mary Shuffrey. It was created in the Wood Green workshop of their son Leonard Shuffrey, the leading architect and architectural designer, who is buried in the Churchyard. James Allen Shuffrey, the notable watercolour artist, and brother of Leonard Shuffrey, sang in Wood Green Church Choir as a boy.

Fifty-seven is the sixteenth discrete semiprime and the sixth in the (3.q) family. With 58 it forms the fourth discrete bi-prime pair. 57 has an aliquot sum of 23 and is the first composite member of the 23-aliquot tree.
As a semiprime, 57 is a Blum integer since its two prime factors are both Gaussian primes.
In the first storyboard draft for Pixar's film Cars, the main character, a race car named Lightning McQueen was going to have number 57 as his racing number, in reference to director John Lasseter's birthdate, January 12, 1957. But in the final cut, Lightning's racing number changed to 95.
The climax of the movie Eraser occurs on Pier 57
Heinz 57, a brand of sauce, and the number of varieties of foods claimed to be produced by the H.J. Heinz Company. Pictured here is the sign from the UK's largest baked bean factory near Wigan, Lancs.
Henry J. Heinz introduced the marketing slogan '57 Varieties' in 1896. He later claimed he was inspired by an advertisement he saw while riding an elevated train in New York City (a shoe store boasting '21 styles'). The reason for '57' is unclear. Heinz said he chose '5' because it was his lucky number and the number '7' was his wife's lucky number. However Heinz also said the number '7' was selected specifically because of the 'psychological influence of that figure and of its enduring significance to people of all ages'. Whatever the reasons, Heinz wanted the company to advertise the greatest number of choices of canned and bottled foods for sale. In fact by 1892, four years before the slogan was created, the Heinz company was already selling more than 60 products.
Animals, especially dogs which are a mixture of multiple breeds, can be referred to as 'Heinz 57'. In bingo in the United Kingdom, a commonly used call for '57' is 'Heinz variety'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYXXB - Nymphaea is a genus of hardy and tender aquatic plants in the family Nymphaeaceae. The genus has a cosmopolitan distribution. Many species are cultivated as ornamental plants, and many cultivars have been bred. Some taxa occur as introduced species where they are not native, and some are weeds. Plants of the genus are known commonly as water lilies or waterlilies in the United Kingdom. The genus name is from the Greek νυμφαια, nymphaia and the Latin nymphaea, which mean water lily and were inspired by the nymphs of Greek and Latin mythology.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4GYY - The abbey was founded in 1246 by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, called King of the Romans and the younger brother of King Henry III of England. Richard founded the abbey to thank God after he had survived a shipwreck. Richard had been granted the manor of Hailes by King Henry, and settled it with Cistercian monks from Beaulieu Abbey in Hampshire. The great Cistercian abbey was entirely built in a single campaign in 1277, and was consecrated in a royal ceremony that included the King and Queen and 15 bishops.
Hailes Abbey became a site of pilgrimage after Richard's son Edmund donated to the Cistercian community a phial of the Holy Blood, purchased in Germany, in 1270. Such a relic of the Crucifixion was a considerable magnet for pilgrimage. From the proceeds, the monks of Hailes were able to rebuild the Abbey on a magnificent scale. One Abbot of Hailes was executed as a rebel after the Battle of Bramham Moor, in 1408.
Though King Henry VIII's commissioners declared the famous relic to be nothing but the blood of a duck, regularly renewed, and though the Abbot Stephen Sagar admitted that the Holy Blood was a fake in hope of saving the Abbey, Hailes Abbey was one of the last religious institutions to acquiesce following the Dissolution Act of 1536. The Abbot and his monks finally surrendered their abbey to Henry's commissioners on Christmas Eve 1539.
After the Dissolution, the west range consisting of the Abbot's own apartments was converted into a house and was home to the Tracy family in the seventeenth century, but these buildings were later demolished and now all that remains are a few low arches in a meadow with outlines in the grass. Surviving remains include the small church for the disappeared parish, with unrestored medieval wall-paintings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD57E0 - St Peter's Church in Winchcombe is one of the great wool churches in the Cotswolds, an area blessed with similar reminders of the wealth of local medieval wool merchants.
The exterior is dominated by a striking west tower, 90 feet high, with 8 pinnacles. Atop the tower is a gilded weathercock, brought here in 1874 from the historic church of St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol. But it is not the weathercock that most people come to Winchcombe to see, but the grotesque carvings that embellish the battlemented roofline of the exterior. (Often called gargoyles, they are technically grotesques, for they do not have water spouts passing through them as a true gargoyle does).
There are 40 of these carvings
about 20 depict demonic creatures, and the remainder appear to be caricatures of locally important people, both civic figures and Abbey officials. To the left (west) of the south porch is a grinning figure of Sir Ralph Boteler of Sudeley, who gave money to complete the church. More famous, and beloved of postcard photographers, is a figure to the east of the porch, a grimacing human figure with a squat hat. This figure is said to be the model for the Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland story.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Altar frontal made of 14th century vestments, stitched by Catherine of Aragon
Saxon coffins of King Kenwulph and his son, St Kenelm
Amusing gargoyles including the possible model for the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland
The first written record of a church dedicated to St Peter in Winchcombe comes from 1175, when a church associated with the Benedictine Abbey here is mentioned. It seems very likely that there was a much earlier Saxon church, dedicated to St Nicholas.
That Norman church gradually fell into disrepair, and in 1458 Abbot William began building a new church. The lord of Sudeley Castle, Lord Ralph Boteler, granted money to help finish the construction, and the new church was completed in just 10 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDD7NB - The Rollright Stones is a complex of three Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monuments near the village of Long Compton, on the borders of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. Constructed from local oolitic limestone, the three monuments now known as the King's Men and the Whispering Knights in Oxfordshire and the King Stone in Warwickshire, are distinct in their design and purpose, and were built at different periods in late prehistory. The stretch of time during which the three monuments were erected bears witness to a continuous tradition of ritual behaviour on sacred ground, from the 4th to the 2nd millennium BCE.
The first to be constructed was the Whispering Knights, a dolmen that dates to the Early or Middle Neolithic period and which was likely to have been used as a place of burial. This was followed by the King's Men, a stone circle which was constructed in the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age
unusually, it has parallels to other circles located further north, in the Lake District, implying a trade-based or ritual connection. The third monument, the King Stone, is a single monolith, and although it is not known when it was constructed, the dominant theory amongst archaeologists is that it was a Bronze Age grave marker.
The British philologist Andrew Breeze has proposed that the name Rollright is from the Brittonic phrase *rodland rïx 'wheel enclosure groove', where *rïx 'groove' refers to a narrow valley near Great Rollright and *rodland 'wheel enclosure' refers to the King's Men circle. By the Early Modern period, folkloric stories had grown up around the Stones, telling of how they had once been a king and his knights who had been turned to stone by a witch
such stories continued to be taught amongst local people well into the 19th century. Meanwhile, antiquarians such as William Camden, John Aubrey and William Stukeley had begun to take an interest in the monuments, leading to fuller archaeological investigations in the 20th century, culminating in e

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYFFR - The Church of St Andrew in Brympton, Somerset, England, dates from the 13th century and has been designated as a Grade I listed building.[1]
It is closely associated with the manor house of Brympton d'Evercy. The d'Evercy family were responsible for building the church. Thomas d'Evercy purchased the estate in 1220. Sir Peter founded a chantry at Brympton d'Evercy in 1306, endowing a priest with a messuage and 40 acres (16 ha) in the parish. New aisles were added in 1469.
It has been suggested that this is the building today known as the priest house, but no structural evidence exists to support this claim. The church contains monuments to Sir John Sydenham (died 1626) and his family who were lords of the manor.
Some of the effigies within the church were originally in the churchyard but were moved into the church in the 19th century and restored by John Edward Carew.
The parish is within the benefice of Odcombe with Brympton, Lufton and Montacute, which is within the deanery of Yeovil

'Gent' who made the town a wee bit famous...
Bygone Burnley, with JACK NADIN
DUCKETT Street, above the former Holy Trinity Church on Accrington Road,
takes its name from James Duckett, of Duckett's Pipe Works, and is a firm
that will still be remembered by many folk in the area. Here, traditionally kiln fired and salt glazed pipes, urinals and drains were manufactured well into the late 1960s, and early 1970s. The firm occupied both sides of Blannel Street, the site of which is now used by small industrial units. On the other side of Accrington Road was the huge quarry used in connection with the pipe works -- also a kids' playground at weekends known locally as Duckett's Delph. The demise of the Duckett's Works was probably brought about by the introduction of plastic for drains and pipes -- much cheaper than fired clay. So who was James Duckett
of Duckett's Pipe Works? Well, James Duckett, the founder of this firm, was born in December, 1825, the son of John and Jenny, his father was employed as a cotton spinner. At the age of nine or 10, he entered into employment at the cotton mill, as many youngsters did at this time, following his father. However, millwork was not suited to young James, he preferred the more open, outdoor work. After a while he was apprenticed to the job of working as a mason, with his brother, who at that time was erecting the building to be known as Barrowford Church. This would be around 1840, when James was just 15 years old. James found this occupation much better suited to his temperament, and a few years later, while still in his teens, he was made a partner in the business. The first large contract the firm was entrusted to was the erection of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church at Burnley, which was opened for divine service on August 2, 1849. Kelbrook Church, near Earby, was also built by James Duckett,.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNK3 - Brympton d'Evercy (also known as Brympton House) is a manor house near Yeovil in the county of Somerset, England. It has been called the most beautiful house in England, a country noted for fine country houses. In 1927 the British magazine Country Life published a set of three articles on the house, in which Christopher Hussey, near the start of his 50-year career as an architectural authority and documenter of British country houses, described Brympton d'Evercy as the most incomparable house in Britain, the one which created the greatest impression and summarises so exquisitely English country life qualities. His articles remain the only detailed account of the house, which in its long history has belonged to six families: the D'Evercys, the Stourtons, the Sydenhams, the Fanes, the Weeks (19922008), and the Glossop family in 2008. Building was begun by the D'Evercy family about 1220 and proceeded slowly into the 18th century. For 750 years it remained little known or recorded. For a few years after the Second World War it held a boys' school, before being reclaimed by its owners as a private house. This it remains, although it is occasionally hired out as a location for filming or a hospitality event.
Brympton d'Evercy from the south around 1722 by Jan Kip and Leonard Knyff.
The house is part of a complex consisting of the mansion, its stables and other outbuildings, the parish church and a puzzling building known as the Priest House. Little remains of the original D'Evercy manor built between 1220 and 1325, as the present house has evolved on the same site.
Brympton d'Evercy was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Brunetone, meaning brown enclosure, from the Old English brun and tun.
The village of Brympton is larger today than at any time in its history. Until the 20th century, it barely qualified as a village, having been deserted in the 14th century. It consisted only of a few cottages scattered along the long drive to the secluded mansion.

My all time favourite band of blokes with beards, the only one without whose surname is Beard. Its got to be the men from Texas Zed Zed Top. I got into them in the late 70's and marvelled at them at The Manchester Apollo and a few other places.
Just in case you have been living under a rock for the last 35 years, ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in June 1970 in Houston, Texas. The band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. The band and its members went through several reconfigurations throughout 1969, achieving their current form when Hill replaced bassist Billy Etheridge in February 1970, shortly before the band was signed to London Records. Etheridge's departure issued primarily from his unwillingness to be bound by a recording contract.
Since the release of the band's debut album in January 1971, ZZ Top has become known for its strong blues roots and humorous lyrical motifs, relying heavily on double entendres and innuendo. ZZ Top's musical style has changed over the years, beginning with blues-inspired rock on their early albums, then incorporating New Wave, punk rock and dance-rock, with heavy use of synthesizers.
ZZ Top were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. As a group, ZZ Top possesses 11 gold records and 7 platinum (13 multi-platinum) records
their 1983 album, Eliminator, remains the group's most commercially successful record, selling over 10 million units. ZZ Top also ranks 80th in U.S. album sales, with 25 million units. The band released their latest studio album, La Futura, in September 2012 and began a supporting tour in October.
This track is from Degüello the sixth studio album by American blues rock band ZZ Top, released in 1979 . 'Degüello' is a Spanish noun that means 'beheading' or, idiomatically, 'no quarter' (as in 'no surrender to be given or accepted--a fight to the death') It was the title of a Moorish-origin bugle call used by the Mexican Army forces at the Battle of the Alamo, Texas, in 1836.
Degüello was produced by Bill Ham, and engineered by Bob Ludwig and recorded and mixed by Terry Manning.
Chevrolet also known as Chevy, is an American brand of vehicle produced by General Motors (GM). Chevrolet was founded by Louis Chevrolet and ousted General Motors founder William C. Durant on November 3, 1911. In 1918 it was acquired by General Motors.
Chevrolet was positioned by Alfred Sloan to sell mainstream vehicles to compete with Henry Ford's Model T in the 1920s, with 'Chevrolet' or 'Chevy' being synonymous with GM. In North America, Chevrolet produces and sells a wide range of vehicles, from subcompact automobiles to medium-duty commercial trucks, whereas in Europe, the brand name these days is used mainly for cars produced in Korea by General Motors. Vauxhall and Opel are the more mainstream European brands.
Registration plate 466XUK is here on 1949 Chevrolet 5.7 Litre Pick-up. Its currently brown but has been many colours in its lifetime. Its well restored, a cracking vehicle!

The red dress effect is the phenomena at which females wearing red clothing are perceived to be more sexually appealing than when wearing other colours.
Naturally, when many non-human primate females become fertile, their estrogen level rises, which causes their blood vessels to open up, leading to redness on the skin, especially near the face, chest and genitalia regions. This increased in redness has been shown to attract male counterparts, shown by their increased activity in sex, self-stimulation and attention towards the females. Therefore, there are reasons to believe of the existence of evolutionary instincts that associates red with fertility.
Many folklores, mythology and literature symbols associate red with fertility, and woman are thought to have worn the equivalent of a red lipstick as early as 10,000 B.C. and so sexual receptiveness and red may be a result of social conditioning. However, this social conditioning may have originated from biology and evolution, and is simply an extension of our primal instincts.

Fifteen is a triangular number, a hexagonal number, a pentatope number and the 4th Bell number.
Fifteen is the double factorial of 5. It is a composite number
its proper divisors being 1, 3 and 5.
With only two exceptions, all prime quadruplets enclose a multiple of 15, with 15 itself being enclosed by the quadruplet (11, 13, 17, 19). 15 is also the number of supersingular primes.
In the Hebrew numbering system, the number 15 is not written according to the usual method, with the letters that represent '10' and '5' (י-ה, yodh and heh), because those spell out one of the Jewish names of God. Instead, the date is written with the letters representing '9' and '6' (ט-ו, teth and vav).
In tennis, the number 15 represents the first point gained in a game.
Age 15 is the age of a quinceañera, a Hispanic girl celebrating her fifteenth birthday. Thus, Spanish bingo callers might refer to the number 15 as la niña bonita (the beautiful girl). In the UK it is the legal age to watch a BBFC '15' rated film in a cinema or purchase a '15' rated film or video game.

The word 'twelve' is the largest number with a single-morpheme name in English. Etymology suggests that 'twelve' (similar to 'eleven') arises from the Germanic compound twalif 'two-leftover', so a literal translation would yield 'two remaining [after having ten taken]'. This compound meaning may have been transparent to speakers of Old English, but the modern form 'twelve' is quite opaque. Only the remaining tw- hints that twelve and two are related.
A group of twelve things is called a duodecad. The ordinal adjective is duodenary, twelfth. The adjective referring to a group consisting of twelve things is duodecuple.
The number twelve is often used as a sales unit in trade, and is often referred to as a dozen. Twelve dozen are known as a gross. (Note that there are thirteen items in a baker's dozen.). the expression 'baker's dozen' dates to the 13th century in one of the earliest English statutes, instituted during the reign of Henry III (1216–1272), called the Assize of Bread and Ale. Bakers who were found to have shortchanged customers (some variations say that they would sell hollow bread) could be subject to severe punishment. To guard against the punishment of losing a hand to an axe, a baker would give 13 for the price of 12, to be certain of not being known as a cheat. Specifically, the practice of baking 13 items for an intended dozen was insurance against 'short measure', on the basis that one of the 13 could be lost, eaten, burnt, or ruined in some way, leaving the baker with the original legal dozen. The practice can be seen in the guild codes of the Worshipful Company of Bakers in London.
Force 12 on the Beaufort wind force scale corresponds to the maximum wind speed of a hurricane. The duodenum (from Latin duodecim, 'twelve') is the first part of the small intestine, that is about twelve inches (30 cm) long. More precisely, this section of the intestine was measured not in inches but in fingerwidths. In fact, in German the name of the duodenum is Zwölffingerdarm and in Dutch the name is twaalfvingerige darm, both meaning 'twelve-finger bowel'.
The importance of 12 in Judaism and Christianity can be found in the Bible. The biblical Jacob had 12 sons, who were the progenitors of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, while the New Testament describes twelve apostles of Jesus
when Judas Iscariot was disgraced, a meeting was held (Acts) to add Matthias to complete the number twelve once more. (Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.). In Orthodox Judaism, 12 also signifies the age a girl matures (bat mitzvah)
In Twelver Shi'a Islam, there are twelve Imams, legitimate successors of the prophet Muhammad. These twelve early leaders of Islam are—Ali, Hasan, Husayn, and nine of Husayn's descendants. The Chinese use a 12 year cycle for time-reckoning called Earthly Branches.

The number 13 is the sixth prime number, and the smallest emirp (prime which is a different prime when reversed). It is also a Fibonacci number, a happy number, and one of only 3 known Wilson primes.
According to famous Sakhi (Evidence) or story of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, when he was an accountant at a town of Sultanpur Lodhi, he was distributing grocery to people and when he gave groceries to the 13th person he stopped there because in Gurmukhi and Hindi the word 13 is called Terah, which means yours. And Guru Nanak Dev Ji kept on saying, 'Yours, yours, yours...' remembering God. People reported to the emperor that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was giving out free food to the people. When treasures were checked, there was more money than before.
In Judaism, 13 signifies the age at which a boy matures and becomes a Bar Mitzvah, i.e., a full member of the Jewish faith (is qualified to be counted as a member of Minyan). In Mesoamerican divination, 13 is the number of important cycles of fortune/misfortune.
The number 13 is considered to be an unlucky number in some countries. Charles Stewart Parnell had an irrational fear of the number thirteen. The end of the Mayan calendar's 13th Baktun is superstitiously feared as a harbinger of the apocalyptic 2012 phenomenon. Fear of the number 13 has a specifically recognized phobia, Triskaidekaphobia, a word which was coined in 1911.
The superstitious sufferers of triskaidekaphobia try to avoid bad luck by keeping away from anything numbered or labelled thirteen. As a result, companies and manufacturers use another way of numbering or labeling to avoid the number, with hotels and tall buildings being conspicuous examples (Thirteenth floor). It's also considered to be unlucky to have thirteen guests at a table. Friday the 13th has been considered the unluckiest day of the month.

The observatory was established in 1945 by Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The managing director of the observatory is Professor Simon Garrington.
The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. There are three other active telescopes at the observatory
the Mark II, and 42 ft (13 m) and 7 m diameter radio telescopes. Jodrell Bank Observatory is the base of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), a National Facility run by the University of Manchester on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BEW1ET - Newcastle upon Tyne commonly known as Newcastle, is a city in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 103 miles (166 km) south of Edinburgh and 277 miles (446 km) north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East, and forms the core of the Tyneside conurbation, the eighth most populous urban area in the United Kingdom. Newcastle is a member of the UK Core Cities Group and is a member of the Eurocities network of European cities.
Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400, when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area is Geordie. Newcastle also houses Newcastle University, a member of the Russell Group, as well as Northumbria University. Newcastle is member of the North of Tyne Combined Authority.
The city developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and was named after the castle built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century, and later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the River Tyne, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres

The bridge was officially opened on 10 October 1928 by King George V and has since become a defining symbol of Tyneside. It is ranked as the tenth tallest structure in the city.
The Tyne Bridge was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson, comparable to their Sydney Harbour Bridge version
The bridge was completed on 25 February 1928, and officially opened on 10 October by King George V and Queen Mary, who were the first to use the roadway, travelling in their Ascot Landau. The opening ceremony was attended by 20,000 schoolchildren who had been given the day off. Movietone news recorded the speech given by the King
The Tyne Bridge's towers were built of Cornish granite and were designed by local architect Robert Burns Dick as warehouses with five storeys. But, the inner floors of the warehouses in the bridge's towers were not completed and, as a result, the storage areas were never used. Lifts for passengers and goods were built in the towers to provide access to the Quayside
they are no longer in use.

The bridge was originally painted green with special paint made by J. Dampney Co. of Gateshead. The same colours were used to paint the bridge in 2000

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7J - This image shows a well-worn blue flight case stencilled with the words Lynott Thin Lizzy Fragile, referencing the touring equipment used by Thin Lizzy and frontman Phil Lynott. Such cases were essential for transporting guitars, amplifiers, and other delicate instruments between venues during extensive national and international tours.
The scuffed surface, chipped paint, and taped label remnants speak to years of use on the road, offering a tangible glimpse into the physical reality of touring life for rock bands during the 1970s and 1980s. Flight cases like this were handled by road crew members responsible for safely moving valuable equipment between trucks, stages, and backstage areas.
Thin Lizzy were one of Ireland's most influential rock bands, known for blending hard rock with folk influences and for iconic tracks such as The Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak. Objects associated with their touring years now carry strong cultural and historical significance, bridging the gap between music performance and the unseen labour behind live shows.
Photographed under low light, the image emphasises texture, wear, and typography, making it well suited to editorial use covering music history, classic rock heritage, touring culture, backstage life, and archival memorabilia connected to influential bands and musicians.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PP0NCT - The Origins of the Chapel Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington.
The man responsible for the founding of the Church was Robert Yates, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he ultimately obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration and the congregation worshipped in Eccleston Barn.
The Toleration Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street, (the same site as is now Cairo Street). A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place.
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built. Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel. In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired
the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does today.

'The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society' is the brilliant sixth studio album by the English rock group The Kinks, released in November 1968. It was the last album by the original quartet, as bassist Pete Quaife left the group in early 1969. A collection of thematic vignettes of English town and hamlet life, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was assembled from songs written and recorded over the previous two years. Allmusic senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Village Green as a 'concept album lamenting the passing of old-fashioned English traditions.'
The record is widely considered one of the most influential and important works by The Kinks, and of the period as a whole. Although it failed to chart upon release, with estimated worldwide sales at 100,000 copies, The Village Green Preservation Society has become one of the band's best selling and most popular records. In 2003, the album was ranked number 255 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
This in my opinion is one of the all time classic English villages. Its got a village green, a village cross etc. If you know or can guess where this place is, please comment and let me know. If you can guess correctly within the first 30 comments left I will send you a small prize. Come on, bring it on!
