Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX7N - This image shows the distinctive papier mache head of Frank Sidebottom, the surreal comic creation of Chris Sievey. The oversized head, with exaggerated blue eyes, dark hair, and fixed expression, became one of the most recognisable visual symbols of British alternative comedy from the 1980s onwards.
Chris Sievey, who grew up in Timperley, Greater Manchester, developed Frank Sidebottom as a deliberately low-tech, DIY character, combining absurd humour, satire, and music. The handmade nature of the head, typically constructed from papier mache and cardboard, was central to the character's identity and reflected a wider punk and post-punk ethos of self-production and creative independence in Manchester's cultural scene.
Frank Sidebottom appeared across television, radio, music performances, and live comedy, often delivering deadpan observations and surreal commentary on everyday British life. Despite the deliberately crude construction, the character achieved cult status, becoming closely associated with Manchester's alternative cultural output alongside music, art, and experimental comedy.
Photographed here in an indoor archive or exhibition setting, with printed artwork and books visible in the background, the image functions both as a documentary record and as a piece of cultural history. It highlights the enduring legacy of Frank Sidebottom as a symbol of British eccentricity, northern humour, and the creative spirit that emerged from Greater Manchester during the late twentieth century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX84 - This image shows an original hand drawn and photocopied poster from 1988 advertising an appearance by Frank Sidebottom, the surreal comic creation of Chris Sievey. The poster announces that Frank Sidebottom would cut the ribbon for the official opening of the Timperley Aquatics water garden on 2 April 1988, at 10.30am GMT, with a live appearance lasting five minutes.
The artwork features Frank Sidebottom's instantly recognisable wide eyed papier mache head, rendered in a deliberately naïve black and white illustration style. Surrounding text and drawings, including fish motifs and playful handwritten lettering, reflect the DIY, low budget aesthetic that defined Sievey's work and the wider British alternative comedy scene of the 1980s.
The poster references Radio Timperley and includes local contact details, reinforcing the strong connection between Frank Sidebottom and community level events in south Manchester. Rather than mainstream venues, Sievey frequently performed at small local openings, shops, and civic events, using absurdity and deadpan humour to parody celebrity culture and public ceremonies.
As a piece of ephemera, the poster offers a valuable snapshot of grassroots British cultural history. It illustrates how alternative comedy, outsider art, and local radio intersected in late twentieth century Manchester, and why Frank Sidebottom became a lasting cult figure associated with Timperley, Greater Manchester, and northern English eccentricity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RECE3M - The Garrard Engineering and Manufacturing Company of Swindon, Wiltshire, was a British company that was famous for producing high-quality gramophone turntables. It was formed by the jewellers Garrard & Co in 1915. The company was sold to Plessey, an electronics conglomerate, in 1960. During the period 1976-1978, Garrard developed demonstrators of the novel video disc technology. Although the team recognised the future potential of this data storage technology, Plessey chose not to invest. After several years in decline, Garrard was sold by Plessey to Gradiente Electronics of Brazil in 1979 and series production was moved to Brazil (Manaus). The remaining Garrard research and development operation in Swindon was reduced to a skeleton operation until completely shut down in 1992. Then, Gradiente licensed the Garrard name to Terence O'Sullivan, who operated as Loricraft Audio, in 1997.
Between 1992 and 1997, the Garrard brand name was licensed to other companies in the US, which imported electronic items built by different, unrelated Far Eastern manufacturers. These included Garrard branded cassette decks, CD players, stereo receivers, portable radio/cassette players, portable Walkman type cassette players, serial-port printer cables, universal TV/audio remote controls, and other miscellany, including turntables that had no connection with any original Garrard design.
In 2018, Cadence Audio SA, who also own the British turntable and tonearm manufacturer SME Limited, took ownership of the Garrard brand and registered trademarks when they purchased Loricraft Audio Ltd. The business was restructured to run under the name of Garrard Turntables UK Ltd.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9GK - The Amstrad CPC (short for Colour Personal Computer) is a series of 8-bit home computers produced by Amstrad between 1984 and 1990. It was designed to compete in the mid-1980s home computer market dominated by the Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum, where it successfully established itself primarily in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and the German-speaking parts of Europe.
The series spawned a total of six distinct models: The CPC464, CPC664, and CPC6128 were highly successful competitors in the European home computer market. The later 464plus and 6128plus, intended to prolong the system's lifecycle with hardware updates, were considerably less successful, as was the attempt to repackage the plus hardware into a game console as the GX4000.
The CPC models' hardware is based on the Zilog Z80A CPU, complemented with either 64 or 128 KB of RAM. Their computer-in-a-keyboard design prominently features an integrated storage device, either a compact cassette deck or 3-inch floppy disk drive. The main units were only sold bundled with either a colour, green-screen or monochrome monitor that doubles as the main unit's power supply. Additionally, a wide range of first and third-party hardware extensions such as external disk drives, printers, and memory extensions, was available.
The CPC series was pitched against other home computers primarily used to play video games and enjoyed a strong supply of game software. The comparatively low price for a complete computer system with dedicated monitor, its high-resolution monochrome text and graphic capabilities and the possibility to run CP/M software also rendered the system attractive for business users, which was reflected by a wide selection of application software.
During its lifetime, the CPC series sold approximately three million units

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPB2 - Top of the Pops (TOTP) is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. The programme was the world's longest-running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each show consisted of performances of some of the week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Top 30 was used from 1969, and the Top 40 from 1984.
Dusty Springfield's I Only Want to Be with You was the first song featured on TOTP, while the Rolling Stones were the first band to perform, with I Wanna Be Your Man. Snow Patrol were the last act to play live on the weekly show when they performed their single Chasing Cars.
Editions of the programme from 1976 onwards started being repeated on BBC Four in 2011 and are aired on most Friday evenings “ as of January 2023 the repeat run has reached 1994. Episodes featuring disgraced presenters and artists such as Jimmy Savile, Dave Lee Travis, Jonathan King, Ian Watkins, R Kelly, Rolf Harris, and Gary Glitter are no longer repeated
2005: The beginning of the end
Figures had plummeted to below three million, prompting an announcement by the BBC that the show was going to move, again, to Sunday evenings on BBC Two, thus losing the prime-time slot on BBC One that it had maintained for more than forty years.
This move was widely reported as a final sidelining of the show, and perhaps signalled its likely cancellation. At the time, it was insisted that this was so the show would air immediately after the official announcement of the new top 40 chart on Radio 1, as it was thought that by the following Friday, the chart seemed out of date. The final Top of the Pops to be shown on BBC One (barring Christmas and New Year specials) was broadcast on Monday 1

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA238X - Jeremy James Anthony Gibson-Beadle MBE (12 April 1948 “ 30 January 2008) was an English television presenter, radio presenter, writer and producer. During the 1980s he was a regular face on British television, and in two years appeared in 50 weeks of the year.
Beadle was born in Hackney, east London, on 12 April 1948. His father, a Fleet Street sports reporter, abandoned Jeremy's mother, Marji (9 July 1921 “ 9 July 2002), when he learned that she was pregnant. Before Jeremy reached the age of two he was frequently hospitalised and had undergone surgery for Poland syndrome, a rare disorder that stunted growth in his right hand.
His mother worked as a secretary to help pay to raise him, including a stint for the boxing promoter Jack Solomons. Beadle did not enjoy school and was frequently in trouble. He was eventually expelled from his secondary school, Orpington County Secondary Boys' School. A teacher remarked, Beadle, you waffle like a champion but know nothing.
After his expulsion, he travelled and worked in Europe. He had a number of jobs, at one point taking photographs of topless models, and worked as a sky-diving instructor, lavatory attendant and tour guide. He even briefly worked as a tour guide at the York dungeons. He often said that he gave the best London tour because he realised that what people wanted was stories of blood, sex and death.
Beadle was chosen in 1970 by Tony Elliott, the founder of Time Out, to set up a Manchester edition of the magazine, a venture that was short-lived, though he subsequently maintained a connection with the publication in London. In 1972, North West Arts Association asked him to organise the Bickershaw Festival, and he worked on further musical events over the next couple of years.
In 1973, as an early member of the Campaign for Real Ale, he was elected to their National Executive and secured the campaign's first television or radio coverage in a one-hour programme on BBC Radio London, which he hosted.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTYF99 - Flat Eric is a puppet character, created by Quentin Dupieux (better known under his stage name Mr. Oizo), from Levi's commercials for Sta-Prest One Crease Denim Clothing, built by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. His name comes from an idea for a commercial that involved having a car run over his head and flattening it. The idea was not used, but the name stuck.
In the commercials, Flat Eric would ride with his friend Angel (played by Philippe Petit) around California, evading the police as a wanted criminal. As of 2018, Mr. Oizo still uses Flat Eric as a mascot.
Background
Flat Eric was based on a dog-like puppet called Stéphane that was similar, but with ears and the hands were fixed. Stéphane appeared in some short films by Mr. Oizo (including a video for the track M-Seq), and had a small cult following in the United Kingdom and France. In March 1999, Levi's decided to build a television commercial campaign around the puppet, to be directed by Oizo.
The character was renamed Eric, a more international name, in contrast to the original French name Stéphane. The name Eric was chosen after Eric Morand, one of the founders of the record label F Communications.
He was made by Janet Knechtel for Jim Henson's Creature Shop, in the United Kingdom, and was performed by Drew Massey for all the Levi's commercials. The Levi's adverts took three days to shoot. The original short films made with Stéphane cost around 15,000 francs to produce.[6] The two Levi's adverts cost around two or three million francs each. The rights to the character were retained by Oizo and production company Partizan.
Characteristics
Eric typically does not speak, communicating only through body language. He has only spoken in the music video for Flat Beat, doing so through electronic squawks reminiscent of Miss Othmar in the Peanuts animated specials.
Appearances
He was featured in the music videos for Flat Beat and Viandes Légumes Véhicules by French musician Mr. Oizo

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJKNF9 - Peaky Blinders is a British period crime drama television series created by Steven Knight. Set in Birmingham, it follows the exploits of the Peaky Blinders crime gang in the direct aftermath of the First World War. Peaky Blinders is a crime drama centred on a family of mixed Irish Traveller and Romani origins based in Birmingham, England, starting in 1919, several months after the end of the First World War. It centres on the Peaky Blinders street gang and their ambitious, cunning crime boss Tommy Shelby (Murphy). Winston Churchill (played by Andy Nyman in series 1 and Richard McCabe in series 2) charges him with suppressing disorder and uprising in Birmingham and recovering a stolen cache of arms meant to be shipped to Libya. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D50139 - ITV Studios Limited's history can be traced back to Granada Productions, which was founded in 1954 as Granada Television's in-house production arm, and Central Television Enterprises, Central Independent Television's international sales operations founded in 1987. Granada Productions and Carlton International (re-branded name for CTE) were merged in 2009 to form ITV Studios
however, some of ITV Studios' subsidiaries, such as ITV Studios Australia, still carried the Granada name until 2014.
ITV Studios not only makes programmes primarily for its parent company ITV plc, but also for other networks such as the BBC and Channel 4. It was formed from a gradual amalgamation of the production divisions of all ITV plc owned 'channel three' licensees which occurred from 1994 to 2004, and for a number of years thereafter following the creation of ITV plc.
The division is also responsible for ITV's production facilities The London Studios, 3SixtyMedia (based at ITV Granada, and co-owned with BBC Studios and Post Production), and location hire company ProVision (based at ITV Yorkshire, with sales offices at ITV Granada and The London Studios). ITV Studios Global Entertainment (formerly Granada International and Granada Ventures) is responsible for sales of finished programmes, formats and commercial licensing deals.
Programmes on non-ITV channels (except S4C, which has always used the name ITV Cymru) retained the Granada brand (examples are Channel 4's Countdown, and The Royle Family for the BBC) until 2009. Many of the programmes shown on ITV network show the end-board featuring the ITV Studios logo after the credits as of 2009. ITV, in full Independent Television, in the United Kingdom, television network consisting of a consortium of private companies in competition with the British Broadcasting Corporation. It is regulated by the Office of Communications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTJ8 - Closed-circuit television (CCTV), also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point (P2P), point to multipoint (P2MP), or mesh wired or wireless links. Though almost all video cameras fit this definition, the term is most often applied to those used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, stores, and other areas where security is needed. Though Videotelephony is seldom called 'CCTV' one exception is the use of video in distance education, where it is an important tool.
Surveillance of the public using CCTV is common in many areas around the world. In recent years, the use of body worn video cameras has been introduced as a new form of surveillance, often used in law enforcement, with cameras located on a police officer's chest or head. Video surveillance has generated significant debate about balancing its use with individuals' right to privacy even when in public.
There are about 350 million surveillance cameras worldwide as of 2016. About 65% of these cameras are installed in Asia.
An article published in CCTV Image magazine estimated the number of private and local government operated cameras in the United Kingdom was 1.85 million in 2011. The estimate was based on extrapolating from a comprehensive survey of public and private cameras within the Cheshire Constabulary jurisdiction. This works out as an average of one camera for every 32 people in the UK, although the density of cameras varies greatly from place to place. The Cheshire report also claims that the average person on a typical day would be seen by 70 CCTV cameras.

4 is the smallest squared prime (p2) and the only even number in this form. It has an aliquot sum of 3 which is itself prime. The aliquot sequence of 4 has 4 members (4, 3, 1, 0) and is accordingly the first member of the 3-aliquot tree.
A number is a multiple of 4 if its last two digits are a multiple of 4. For example, 1092 is a multiple of 4 because 92 = 4×23.
Only one number has an aliquot sum of 4 and that is squared prime 9.
A four-sided plane figure is a quadrilateral (quadrangle) or square, sometimes also called a tetragon. A circle divided by 4 makes right angles. Because of it, four (4) is the base number of plane (mathematics). Four cardinal directions, four seasons, duodecimal system, and vigesimal system are based on four.
A solid figure with four faces is a tetrahedron. The regular tetrahedron is the simplest Platonic solid. A tetrahedron, which can also be called a 3-simplex, has four triangular faces and four vertices. It is the only self-dual regular polyhedron.
Four-dimensional space is the highest-dimensional space featuring more than three convex regular figures.
In Buddhism the four Noble Truths are:
Dukkha – The Noble Truth of Suffering
Samudaya – The Noble Truth of the Cause of Suffering
Nirodha – The Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering
Magga – The Noble Truth of the Path leading to the Cessation of Suffering
The Chinese, Vietnamese, the Korean and the Japanese are superstitious about the number four because it is a homonym for 'Death' in their languages.
Channel 4 is a British public-service television broadcaster which began transmission on 2 November 1982. Although largely commercially self-funded, it is ultimately publicly-owned
originally a subsidiary of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), the station is now owned and operated by Channel Four Television Corporation, a public body established in 1990, coming into operation in 1993. With the conversion of the Wenvoe transmitter in Wales to digital on 31 March 2010, Channel 4 became an entirely UK-wide TV channel for the first time.
The channel was established to provide a fourth television service to the United Kingdom in addition to the television licence–funded BBC's two services and the single commercial broadcasting network, ITV.
