Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGHNJ - This image shows Northwich Marina basin in Cheshire, with a narrowboat moored prominently in the foreground and multiple canal boats lining the opposite side of the marina. The calm water creates clear reflections of the boats, surrounding greenery, and nearby residential buildings, giving the scene a peaceful and balanced composition.
The photograph was taken in daylight under partly cloudy skies, with soft light enhancing the colours of the narrowboats and the surrounding landscape. A grassy towpath runs alongside the marina, reinforcing the leisure and recreational character of the location.
Northwich Marina provides moorings close to the town centre and access to the River Weaver navigation and wider UK canal network. It is popular with leisure boaters, walkers, and visitors exploring Cheshire's waterways and industrial heritage.
The image captures an attractive aspect of modern British canal life, combining traditional narrowboats with contemporary waterside development and a tranquil town-centre marina setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0MMD8 - A Jet2 aircraft is parked on a UK airport apron at dusk, with mobile stairs, apron markings and ground service equipment visible around the aircraft. The image works well as an editorial concept for possible jet fuel shortages, reduced fuel supplies, rising aviation fuel prices and the risk of higher air fares for UK and EU travellers during the summer holiday season. It is especially relevant to news and feature coverage linked to the continuing Middle East conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, and the wider threat to oil and refined-product flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The International Energy Agency said in April 2026 that attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East and restrictions to tanker movements through Hormuz had led to the largest oil supply disruption in history, tightening product markets and pushing up prices. IATA's Jet Fuel Price Monitor says the global average jet fuel price rose to 181.22 US dollars per barrel last week, while IATA also notes that fuel is one of the largest airline operating costs, commonly accounting for around 25 to 30 per cent of total operating expenses. That makes the photograph commercially useful for stories about airline resilience, fuel hedging, flight cancellations, route cuts, aviation energy security, passenger disruption, holiday travel, package holidays and the vulnerability of European air travel to external energy shocks. Jet2 says it is the UK's third largest airline, adding relevance for stories about mainstream leisure aviation and consumer travel costs. The image should not imply that this specific Jet2 flight had been cancelled, delayed or left short of fuel, because it simply shows a normal aircraft on stand. However, it is a strong documentary illustration of the wider economic pressure on airlines when fuel becomes harder to source or substantially more expensive, creating the potential for higher fares, operational changes and pressure on lower-margin routes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPBK - This image shows a yellow Dogs Trust dog ambulance van parked in a public car park. The vehicle carries prominent Dogs Trust branding and the long-established slogan A dog is for life, which reflects the charity's core message promoting responsible dog ownership and lifelong commitment to pets.
Dog ambulance vans form a vital part of Dogs Trust's operational fleet, providing safe and secure transport for dogs between rescue centres, veterinary facilities, foster placements, and rehoming locations. These vehicles are specially adapted to ensure animal welfare during transit and are used across the UK as part of the charity's rescue and support services.
Dogs Trust is the UK's largest dog welfare charity and plays a major role in dog rehoming, education, and animal protection. The visibility of branded vehicles such as this helps raise public awareness of dog welfare issues while supporting practical, frontline rescue work.
Photographed in overcast, wet conditions, the image offers a realistic, documentary view of everyday charity operations. It is well suited for editorial use covering animal welfare, rescue services, charity logistics, pet ownership responsibility, and the role of voluntary organisations in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0KPPP - Penny Lane is a road in the south Liverpool suburb of Mossley Hill. The name also applies to the area surrounding its junction with Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, and to the roundabout at Smithdown Place that was the location for a major bus terminus, originally an important tram junction of Liverpool Corporation Tramways. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the LennonMcCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. It was a place that we both knew, and so we both knew the things that turned up in the story.
Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. It was reliving childhood

England
The Health and Medicines Act 1988 allows the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to provide, and charge for, various services for the purpose of income generation for the NHS. The Department of Health's guidance on Income generation in the NHS (2006) provides that income generation activities of which charging for car parking is one must be profitable and cannot use NHS funding to subsidise their costs.
NHS England has issued non-mandatory guidance on NHS patient, visitor and staff car parking management (updated October 2015). This suggests concessions for the following groups:
-disabled people
-people who attend frequent outpatient appointments
-visitors with relatives who are gravely ill
-visitors to (and carers of) people who have an extended stay in hospital
-carers of people in the above groups
-staff working shifts when no public transport is available

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJM7ER - Warrington Hospital is a health facility at Warrington in Cheshire, England. It is managed by Warrington & Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
History
The hospital has its origins an isolation hospital which was constructed on the site in 1893. The Warrington Union Workhouse Infirmary was built on the same site and opened in 1898. The site was occupied by the Whitecross Military Hospital during the First World War. The infirmary became the Warrington Borough General Hospital in 1930 and it joined the National Health Service in 1948. Meanwhile the isolation hospital became known as the Aiken Street Hospital.
The Aiken Street Hospital was demolished in 1973 and the site was redeveloped in stages to facilitate the creation of the Appleton Wing in 1980, the Burtonwood Wing in 1988, the Croft Wing in 1994 and the Daresbury Wing in 1998.
Management of the hospital passed to the Warrington General Hospital NHS Trust in 1993. A new £6.25 million intensive care unit opened in February 2009

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EDP5 - Castlefield is an inner city conservation area of Manchester in North West England. The conservation area which bears its name is bounded by the River Irwell, Quay Street, Deansgate and the Chester Road.
It was the site of the Roman era fort of Mamucium or Mancunium which gave its name to Manchester. It was the terminus of the Bridgewater Canal, the world's first industrial canal built in 1764, with the oldest canal warehouse opening in 1779. The world's first passenger railway terminated here in 1830, at Liverpool Road railway station and the first railway warehouse opened here in 1831.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFFA - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways. Seven new Supercharging stations, all located at motorway service stations, are now in the process of being built, with more coming soon.
Heretofore, Tesla's somewhat anaemic Supercharger roll-out in the UK had mostly been located in cities
not exactly the ideal place to charge up your car for a long-distance drive. Some Superchargers were located near a motorway or main road, but not in motorway service stations.
As reported by Engadget, the dearth of motorway Superchargers was apparently due to a legal dispute between Tesla and Ecotricity, a UK-based company that already had a large number of electric vehicle charging points across the country, including exclusivity deals at motorway service stations.
According to a few newspaper and website reports, Tesla approached Ecotricity prior to the launch of right-hand-drive Model S in the UK, to try and strike some kind of deal to get Supercharging stations into motorway service stations. Seemingly, at some point that deal turned sour, with Ecotricity's founder saying back in May 2014 that this is nothing more than an attempted smash and grab raid. Soon after, both companies hunkered down in litigation land, suing and countersuing each other. This week they finally reached an out-of-court settlement.
Yesterday, somewhat suspiciously and/or coincidentally, both Tesla and Ecotricity published very similar blog posts. Neither post referenced the other company, instead focusing on their commitment to grow their UK electric vehicle charging networks. While the details of the settlement are confidential, given that Tesla is now allowed to build Superchargers at motorway service stations, it would appear to have got its way.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFFC - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CFE7J2 - A close-up image of an NS&I Premium Bonds prize cheque issued by National Savings and Investments in the United Kingdom, shown being held in a person's hand. The cheque is clearly identifiable as a Premium Bonds payment, a distinctive feature of the long-running government-backed savings scheme that replaces traditional interest with monthly prize draws. The visible layout, security features and printed details reinforce the official nature of the document and its role within the UK's personal finance landscape.
Premium Bonds are one of the most widely held savings products in Britain, offering capital security backed by HM Treasury while providing the chance to win tax-free prizes rather than guaranteed interest. The act of holding a physical cheque evokes a tangible moment of reward and reassurance, linking abstract savings decisions to real-world financial outcomes. Although digital banking now dominates most transactions, the paper cheque format retains strong symbolic value in representations of winnings, payments and financial success.
The image conveys themes of trust, security and everyday finance, reflecting how ordinary households interact with state-backed savings institutions. It also highlights the accessibility of Premium Bonds as a savings vehicle, often associated with cautious investment strategies, long-term saving and intergenerational financial habits. The close framing focuses attention on the cheque itself rather than the individual, keeping the emphasis on the financial instrument and institution.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering personal finance, savings, UK banking, government-backed financial products, cost-of-living discussions and household economics. It is also appropriate for commercial editorial contexts relating to financial services, money management, consumer finance education and representations of savings outcomes in the UK.

The Hollies are an English pop and rock group, formed in Manchester in the early 1960s, though most of the band members are from throughout East Lancashire. Known for their distinctive vocal harmony style, they became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s and 1970s. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries, although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966. Along with The Rolling Stones and The Searchers, they are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that have never officially broken up and that continue to record and perform. The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
The original line-up included Graham Nash as guitarist and vocalist. You may know him from Crosby, Stills &
Nash, considered one of the first 'supergroups'.
This is a classic track, my favourite from the Hollies.
I am familiar with Asthma. It claimed the life of my mother, who suffered with it for many years.
Asthma (from the Greek άσθμα, ásthma, 'panting') is the common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. Its characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm.
Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma is clinically classified according to the frequency of symptoms, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and peak expiratory flow rate.
It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Treatment of acute symptoms is usually with an inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonist (such as salbutamol). Alternatively glucocorticoid/corti steroids, such as Pulmicort, a brand name in the UK and Europe.
The prevalence of asthma has increased significantly since the 1970s. As of 2010, 300 million people were affected worldwide. In 2009 asthma caused 250,000 deaths globally.
