The name also applies to the area surrounding its junction with Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, and to the roundabout at Smithdown Place that was the location for a major bus terminus, originally an important tram junction of Liverpool Corporation Tramways. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the LennonMcCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. It was a place that we both knew, and so we both knew the things that turned up in the story.
Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. Huge new mural of punk rock singer and guitarist Pete Shelley has appeared in Leigh, Greater Manchester
Created in tribute to the late punk rock icon, it sits in the heart of the community where he was born and grew up and still has family today.
Based on the cover of The Buzzcocks' 1978 single Ever Fallen In Love and a portrait of Shelley, created by artist Chris Gabrin in the same year, it's been designed by artists Malcolm Garrett and Akse P19.
The latter is well known in the city for his photo-realistic portraits of pop culture icons, and his work is often seen popping up in prime locations across Manchester.
Situated close to Leigh Town Hall and the historic Turnpike Centre, the new mural is Akse's biggest yet sitting smack bang in the heart of Leigh. Initiated by The Pete Shelley Memorial Campaign, it has taken over three years of fundraising in order to complete the project.
At a whopping 200 meters squared, it's not an easy one to miss if you're in the area and has taken around a week to complete with the finishing touches, including a final coat of protective varnish, being applied by the street artist this afternoon.
Whilst the artwork has been unfolding over the past week, locals have had some fun trying to guess who it might be with Akse posting a range of updates to his social media showing the piece at various stages of completion
Pete was always incredibly proud of his northern roots, and we hope that the mural will help Pete's legacy live on and inspire more young artists and musicians to break down barriers and follow their dreams

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7NWW - Viola Beach will be etched in Warrington's history forever thanks to the bronze frieze of the band unveiled September 2021.
The sculpture added outside Warrington Parr Hall serves as a tribute to Jack Dakin, River Reeves, Kris Leonard, Tom Lowe and Craig Tarry the members and manager of the band.
The frieze, unveiled by the commissioned artist Tom Murphy, depicts the band alongside iconic elements of Warrington and serves as a permanent tribute in their memory.
Ben Dunne, dad of River Reeves, said: As a group of family and friends, seeing our son, step-son, brother, nephew, cousin, and good friend captured in bronze with his mates was both heart-breaking and strangely comforting.
River looked happy and at peace, and to think that people in hundreds of years time will be able to see him like that is almost hard to comprehend.
Thank you to all those people who gave so generously in 2016 and to the council for making it happen, he added.
Thank you also to Tom Murphy for creating something so beautiful now destined to keep River, the band and Craig close to the heart of the town forever.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Russ Bowden, said: The unveiling of the frieze is a celebration of Jack, River, Kris, Tom and Craig, their achievements, and their iconic music.
I am pleased that the council has been able to work with their families to create this fitting tribute, which serves as a humbling reminder of their story.

Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Rapper Aitch has vowed to remove advert for his new album and restore the painting of local hero' in Manchester
A mural of former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis on Port Street, Manchester, has been painted over with an advert for local rapper Aitch, prompting such an outcry that the rapper has promised to restore the original painting.
Aitch, an MC from Moston in north Manchester, said he had no control over which billboards were used to advertise his new album and would never have sanctioned such an act of disrespect against a local hero.
It's come to light that the iconic Ian Curtis mural on Port Street has been painted over with my album artwork. This is the first time I've heard of this, me and my team are getting this fixed pronto. No way on earth would I want to disrespect a local hero like Ian, he tweeted. I don't just choose locations for billboards, he added.
Aitch's response was welcomed by Peter Hook, Joy Division's bassist, who had responded with dismay to the mural being painted over as very sad to see.
Thank you @OfficialAitch great gesture, he tweeted.
Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, also commended Aitch for fixing the mistake.
It should never have happened and he shouldn't have been put in this position. Ian is a true icon of our city. He must be fully restored and left in his place for time in memoriam. Thanks to everyone for showing what Ian means to us, tweeted Burnham.
The monochrome mural by graffiti artist Akse P19 was created in October 2020 to commemorate World Mental Health Day. It depicts Curtis performing in Brussels in 1979, a year before he killed himself.
