Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9APB4 - Beer pump clip artwork for Discover Ossett, a 4.1% ABV Nelson Sauvin and Amarillo pale ale associated with Ossett Brewery and Abbeydale Brewery. The illustrated design uses the look of a vintage travel poster to promote Ossett as a West Yorkshire market town, showing market stalls, flowers, a signpost, civic buildings and a clock tower under a warm orange sky. The image is useful for editorial and commercial stock uses connected with British real ale, cask beer, craft brewing, brewery collaborations, beer branding, pub pump clips, graphic design, Yorkshire tourism, local identity and the modern revival of illustrated beer label art. Abbeydale Brewery's beer archive describes Discover Ossett as a 4.1% collaboration pale ale made with Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo and Columbus hops, and says it brings together two popular beers, Deception and White Rat. Untappd also lists Discover Ossett V2 by Ossett Brewery as a 4.1% English pale ale with Nelson Sauvin and Amarillo wording, supporting the label details visible in the image. The subject has strong value for stories about independent breweries, northern beer culture, guest ales, beer festivals, CAMRA real ale interest, handpull clips, pub trade marketing and limited edition seasonal or collaboration beers. Nelson Sauvin is strongly associated with New Zealand hop character, often linked with white grape and gooseberry notes, while Amarillo is widely used for citrus and floral hop flavours, making the beer relevant to modern pale ale taste trends. The Ossett town artwork adds a local place-marketing angle, connecting beer branding with civic pride, market-town heritage and the Wakefield district. The pump clip is also useful for articles on how breweries use nostalgic tourism imagery, bright typography and local landmarks to make cask ales stand out on busy pub bars. It is a clear stock image for beer writers, pub bloggers, brewery features, hospitality coverage, tasting notes, real ale guides, drinks retail, bar design

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJY9 - Manchester Town Hall stands partially enclosed by temporary structures during an extensive programme of renovation and restoration in Albert Square, photographed in August 2025 under bright late-summer daylight and a blue sky with scattered cloud. The clock tower, one of the most recognisable elements of Manchester's skyline, is now visibly restored, marking a significant milestone in the long-running refurbishment project.
Completed in 1877 and designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse, Manchester Town Hall is one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic civic architecture in Britain. The building symbolised Manchester's nineteenth-century industrial confidence and municipal ambition, housing the city's political administration and civic functions for well over a century.
The current renovation programme aims to conserve the historic structure while adapting it for modern use, addressing decades of deferred maintenance and improving accessibility, sustainability and safety. The restoration of the clock tower has been closely followed locally, as it represents both technical progress and the gradual return of a much-loved civic landmark to full prominence.
Set against the evolving public realm of Albert Square, the image reflects Manchester's broader approach to heritage-led regeneration, where historic civic buildings are preserved and repurposed rather than replaced. The photograph is well suited for editorial use covering urban regeneration, heritage conservation, public investment in historic buildings, civic identity, and the ongoing transformation of Manchester's city centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T0DAEC - Rochdale Town Hall is a Victorian-era municipal building in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. It is widely recognised as being one of the finest municipal buildings in the country, and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.
The Town Hall functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and houses local government departments, including the borough's civil registration office.
Built in the Gothic Revival style at a cost of £160,000 (£15.9 million in 2023), it was inaugurated for the governance of the Municipal Borough of Rochdale on 27 September 1871.
The architect, William Henry Crossland, was the winner of a competition held in 1864 to design a new Town Hall. It had a 240-foot (73 m) clock tower topped by a wooden spire with a gilded statue of Saint George and the Dragon, both of which were destroyed by fire on 10 April 1883, leaving the building without a spire for four years.
A new 190-foot (58 m) stone clock tower and spire in the style of Manchester Town Hall was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, and erected in 1887.
Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner described the building as possessing a rare picturesque beauty. Its stained-glass windows are credited as the finest modern examples of their kind.
The building came to the attention of Adolf Hitler, who was said to have admired it so much that he wished to ship the building, brick-by-brick, to Nazi Germany had the United Kingdom been defeated in the Second World War
The Town Hall was one of several built in the textile towns of North West England following the Municipal Corporations Act 1835, but is one of only two in Greater Manchester built in the Gothic style. Between the setting of the foundation stone and the building's completion, revisions and additions were made to the original design. Money was lavished upon the decor and inventory, and the extra expenditure did not escape the ire of its critic

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243W - This image shows Wesley Hall, a red-brick Victorian building constructed in 1901, located on Church Street in the historic seaside town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. Originally built as a Wesleyan Methodist hall, the building has since been repurposed and now houses the Museum of Whitby Jet.
The facade features decorative brickwork, stone detailing around arched windows, and a central arched entrance, typical of late-Victorian civic and religious architecture. Display boards on either side of the entrance advertise exhibitions and provide information for visitors, clearly identifying the building's current role as a museum and cultural venue.
The Museum of Whitby Jet focuses on the history and craftsmanship of Whitby Jet, a fossilised gemstone formed from ancient wood and famously used in mourning jewellery during the Victorian period. Jet mining and carving were once major local industries and remain closely associated with Whitby's identity.
The photograph was taken in daylight under partly cloudy skies, with a passer-by visible outside the entrance, providing scale and a sense of everyday activity. The image documents the adaptive reuse of a historic religious building as a museum, reflecting Whitby's strong emphasis on heritage tourism, local craft history, and architectural preservation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP0K4R - Macclesfield Town Hall is a Georgian municipal building in the Market Place of Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. Dating originally from 1823“24, it was designed by Francis Goodwin in the Greek Revival style, and extended in 1869“71 by James Stevens and again in 1991“92. The building incorporates the former Borough Police Station. The town hall is listed at grade II*
The first structure on this site was a medieval guildhall which dated back to at least the 13th century and which was connected to a bakehouse on the north side. The foundation stone for the current town hall was laid on 4 September 1823.[5] It was designed by Francis Goodwin in the Greek Revival style and completed in 1824.[5] It was extended between 1869 and 1871 to a design by James Stevens and again between 1991 and 1992.
The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester attended a reception at the town hall, to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the granting of a charter to the town, on 19 July 2011
The town hall stands at SJ 91748 73738 on Churchside and Chestergate in Macclesfield's Market Place.
The two-storey ashlar building is in Greek Revival style. The original design is similar to Francis Goodwin's previous design for the (now-demolished) Manchester Old Town Hall, and is modelled on the Erechtheion in Athens. The Churchside façade of 1823“24, which Clare Hartwell and co-authors describe as a little constricted, has a large central portico with four plain (unfluted) Ionic columns topped with a pediment. The portico is flanked by single bays, with sash windows divided into three parts on the first floor. On the ground floor is a simple sash window to the left-hand side and a double doorway to the right.
A wider west front on Chestergate in the same style was added in 1869“71 by James Stevens, a local architect from the town. It has nine bays, with a central portico that matches the Churchside one. The doorway, now the building's main entrance, is topped with an architrave of polished granite

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNN59B - Nantwich Traditional Market
The Market began in 1500. The market building used today dates from 1867. There is a Market on three days a week, and there are stalls inside and out. Nantwich is a busy shopping centre with many fine food, drink and clothing retailers.
Nantwich is an ancient settlement and there were Romans here. The ˜wich' part of the name comes from salt, which the town remains famous for. The local salt springs were good for making salt, and in the 1900s were popular for health tourists. The town still has a popular heated outdoor brine swimming pool.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5R4 - The Old Town Hall is a municipal building in The Shambles, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England. The town hall, which was the headquarters of Stroud Urban District Council, is a Grade II* listed building.
Following the granting of a charter to hold markets in 1594, the lord of the manor at Over Lypiatt, John Throckmorton, decided to commission a market hall
the new building was designed in the neoclassical style and completed in 1596. The original design involved a symmetrical main frontage with four bays facing onto the Market Place
it was arcaded on the ground floor to allow markets to be held
an assembly room with a large oriel window was established on the first floor.
The building was first used for municipal purposes as a meeting place for the local vestry in the early 19th century. It was extended to a design by Francis Niblett to accommodate the county court in 1851 and, after becoming the offices of the local board of health, it was remodelled in the gothic style with a large gable containing mullion windows erected above the two central bays in 1856. In order to improve the stability of the building, large buttresses, flanking the two central bays, were installed on the front of the building in 1890. After significant population growth, partly associated with the number of dye works in the town, the area became an urban district with the town hall as its headquarters in 1894.
Following an increase in the responsibilities of the council, civic leaders acquired the former offices of the Gloucester Banking Company in the High Street in 1930
the High Street building was converted for municipal use and was subsequently referred to as the Council Chambers. Although most council officers and their departments moved to the new Council Chambers in the High Street, some departments, including the technical services department, remained in the old building. The old town hall remained in municipal use even after the enlarged Stroud District Council was formed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGXG - Stockport Town Hall is a building in Stockport, England, that houses government and administrative functions. It was designed by architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas who had previously designed Belfast City Hall. Stockport Town Hall was designated a Grade II listed building in 1975,[1] upgraded to Grade II* in September 2007.[2]
It was opened by the then Prince and Princess of Wales in July 1908. To commemorate the Royal visit, part of Heaton Lane, a main shopping street in the town, was renamed Prince's Street.[3][4][5]
Council and committee meetings take place during the evening in three oak-panelled committee rooms and in a traditional Council Chamber. The chamber has elaborate plasterwork, brass chandeliers and decorative carvings on oak benches. The civic collection of silver, some of which dates from the 15th century, lines the wall of the corridor outside the chamber. Stockport Town Hall is a licensed Wedding venue. Weddings and receptions are a frequent occurrence at the Town Hall.
An imposing Italian marble entrance leads to the Edwardian Ballroom, which former poet laureate Sir John Betjeman described as magnificent. This contains a Wurlitzer organ formerly installed in Manchester's Paramount Theatre and moved to Manchester's Free Trade Hall in 1977 subsequently being moved to Stockport Town Hall and being opened at Stockport in late 1999. The Wurlitzer, a 'Publix 1' was one of only sixteen of its kind in the world and was designed by the American Theatre Organist Jesse Crawford for the accompaniment of silent films. The Manchester Paramount instrument was unique in being the only one to be exported to a theatre outside the United States. The organ has been fully overhauled and the old relays have been replaced with digital technology. Various changes to the organ's original specification have been carried out throughout its life both in the theatre and its subsequent homes. The organ was installed and is owned by the Lancastrian Theatre Organ Trust

The Pyramid, opened in 2002, hosts various classes throughout the year for people interested in discovering the arts. Pyramid also hosts a monthly Comedy Store Event, local band nights as well as having a varied programme of weekly classes. One of its studios was named in 2011 after the late Pete Postlethwaite.

Birmingham's oldest venue. It was designed by Joseph Hansom and Edward Welch and modelled on a classical temple, hence the columns on the outside. It opened in 1834.
Its debut as a rock and pop venue came in the late 1950s and 1960s. Buddy Holly, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath and numerous bands and solo artists have appeared there. It closed in 1996 for a make over and refurbishment and re-opened in 2007. It is now one of the city's more posher venues and tends to attract the more sedate kind of acts, although it was the site of an Ozzy Osbourne homecoming concert!

The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, was formed in 2006 with the merger of the new Museum of Scotland, with collections relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history, and the adjacent Royal Museum (so renamed in 1995), with collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures.
The two connected buildings stand beside each other on Chambers Street, by the intersection with the George IV Bridge, in central Edinburgh. The museum is part of National Museums Scotland. Admission is free.
The two buildings retain distinctive characters: the Museum of Scotland is housed in a modern building opened in 1998, while the former Royal Museum building was begun in 1861, and partially opened in 1866, with a Victorian Romanesque Revival facade and a grand central hall of cast iron construction that rises the full height of the building. This building reopened on 29 July 2011 after a £47 million project to restore and extend the building, and redesign the exhibitions (by Ralph Appelbaum).
The National Museum incorporates the collections of the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, and the Royal Museum. As well as the main national collections of Scottish archaeological finds and medieval objects, the museum contains artifacts from around the world, encompassing geology, archaeology, natural history, science, technology and art. The 16 new galleries reopened in 2011 include 8,000 objects, 80 per cent of which were not formerly on display.
One of the more notable exhibits is the stuffed body of Dolly the sheep, the first successful clone of a mammal from an adult cell. Other highlights include Ancient Egyptian exhibitions, one of Elton John's extravagant suits and a large kinetic sculpture named the Millennium Clock.

The Town Hall was rated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building in 1952 and the Town Hall Extension, completed in 1938, was Grade II* listed in 1974. Attop the clocktower is a golden cottonseed. A testament to the original source of the city's rapid growth and wealth.
The planning for a new Town Hall began in 1863. After an investigation of suitable sites, including Piccadilly, the site chosen for the new town hall was an oddly shaped triangle facing onto Albert Square. The choice of location was influenced by a desire to provide a central, accessible, but relatively quiet site in a respectable district, close to Manchester's banks and municipal offices, next to a large open area, suitable for the display of a fine building.
A competition was held to design the Town Hall. Of the 137 entries in open competition for the design, Waterhouse's design was chosen, mainly for his ingenious planning, and he was appointed as architect on 1 April 1868.
The foundation stone of the new Town Hall was laid on 26 October 1868 by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Robert Neill. Construction took nine years, used fourteen million bricks,[6] and cost £775,000 (£53.5 million as of 2011). The Town Hall was opened by Lord Mayor Abel Heywood, who had championed the project, on 13 September 1877, after Queen Victoria's refusal to attend the opening.
The building exemplifies the Victorian Gothic revival style of architecture, using themes and elements from 13th-century Early English Gothic architecture. The choice was influenced by the wish for a spiritual acknowledgement of Manchester's late medieval heritage in the textile trade of the Hanseatic league and also an affirmation of modernity, the fashionable neo-Gothic style being preferred over the Neoclassical architecture favoured in neighbouring Liverpool. The exterior, faced with hard sandstone quarried near Bradford, Yorkshire, known as 'Spinkwell stone',[9] is decorated with sculptures of important figures in Manchester's history. The interior is faced with multi-coloured Architectural terracotta by Gibbs and Canning Limited. The painted ceilings were provided by Best &
Lea of Manchester, who had also provided the ceilings in the Natural History Museum, London, also designed by Alfred Waterhouse.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952, is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of Gothic revival architecture in the world

A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.
The town hall, here to the left of the shot is 18th century. Local legend holds that it was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, but this claim is unstantiated (a bit like how Mr Cameroooon is to slash UK debt, but not actually increase taxes).
A more credible claim is that Witney was the centre of blanket manufacture (which it was). In fact the local footy team (of which I have not actually seen, accompained by a pie at half time) Witney United FC retains its nickname 'The Blanketmen' from the town's traditional trade.

As you enter on the floor is a mosaic depicting the bee, the symbol of Manchester's being a hive of industry during the 19th century. The bee also used be on the Boddingtons beer logo. A history going back to 1778 was ended when last family chairman Ewart Boddington sold the Strangeways brewery and the Boddingtons brand to Whitbread for £50.7 million. In May 2000, the Whitbread Beer Company was acquired by brewing conglomerate Interbrew. In 2004 brewing was moved from the original site next to Manchester's main victorian prison. Cask Boddingtons is still brewed in Manchester however, at teh former Kestral Lager brewary at Moss Side.
Reasuringly the town hall tower is still topped by a golden cotton seed ball, the original source of the city's wealth. That will not go the way of Strangeways brewery.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool, England is situated on the junction of Hope Street and Hardman Street, diagonally opposite the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. It appears in numerous CAMRA guides.
I have always referred to as the Philharmonic Pub or simply the Phil. It was originally designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas for the brewers Robert Cain &
Company and opened in 1898. The exterior is in the Art Nouveau style.
The interior has dark wood-panelled walls with copper reliefs, Art Deco lighting and mosaic floor and bar. The main bar is highly decorated with glass grapes and a nearly life-sized golden eagle. As well as the main bar area, the pub also has the spacious Grande Lounge at the rear of the building, and two smaller drinking snugs named Brahms and Liszt. The Grande Lounge has just been restored to the way it was meant to be when the pub was first opened. The current dining room is located on the first floor.
The men's toilets are famous for their original, ornate marble urinals, Women are permitted to visit as part of organised tours. The building is a Grade II listed.
I had a few nice pints here a while ago when I spent a few years working at Littlewoods in Liverpool. I always try to drop in now whenever I have the chance :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CET1GE - Here shown at dusk, Warrington Town Hall is in the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England.
It consists of a house, originally called Bank Hall, flanked by two detached service wings at right angles to the house, one on each side. The house and the service wings are each designated by English Heritage as Grade I listed buildings.
At the time the house was built Warrington was in the historic county of Lancashire. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner declared it to be the finest house of its date in south Lancashire
Bank Hall was built in 1750 for Thomas Patten. The architect was James Gibbs and it is likely that it was the last important building of his design to be completed in his lifetime. When it was built it stood in open countryside to the north of the town of Warrington.
The Patten family were important merchants in the town. Thomas' father had made the lower River Mersey navigable from Runcorn to Bank Quay, Warrington, and had established a copper smelting factory at Bank Quay. In 1870 John Wilson-Patten, 1st Baron Winmarleigh, sold the hall to Warrington Borough Council for £9000 (£640,000 as of 2013), and 13 acres (5.3 ha) of surrounding land for a further £15,000 (£1,060,000 as of 2013).
Almost all of the land was opened as Warrington's first public park in 1873. When the house was built, it was surrounded by a high wall. In 1895 this was replaced by iron railings and a fine set of gates.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJGE - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 , amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2N28PT7 - Colourful illustrated panorama of Stockport, Greater Manchester, using a simplified skyline style to bring together several of the town's best-known buildings and civic landmarks. The artwork includes the red-brick mill associated with Stockport's hatting heritage, the modern Stockport Pyramid, the historic Market Hall and market place, the grand white frontage of Stockport Town Hall and the Art Deco Plaza Cinema, with its bold vertical signage. The picture is useful for editorial and commercial features on Stockport identity, northern town centres, Greater Manchester tourism, local pride, urban regeneration, heritage interpretation, poster art, wall art, civic branding and the way towns use recognisable architecture to define a sense of place. Stockport has a layered history, from textile mills and hat manufacturing to Victorian municipal confidence, market trading and cinema culture. The Hat Works museum records the town's important hatting industry, while the Town Hall is one of Stockport's major civic buildings and the Plaza remains a restored cinema and live performance venue. The Pyramid adds a contrasting modern landmark, recognised from road and rail approaches to the town. The image has a clean graphic quality rather than a conventional street photograph, so it could suit guide pages, local history features, tourism promotion, urban design commentary, architectural round-ups, nostalgia pieces, regeneration stories, Greater Manchester culture coverage and designs about place-based identity. The gradient sky, flat colour blocks and crisp outlines make the buildings readable as icons rather than documentary architecture, giving the scene a cheerful, collectible feel. It is especially relevant for buyers looking for town landmark illustration, North West England poster imagery, local heritage graphics, civic tourism visuals or a compact representation of Stockport's mix of industry, entertainment, markets and municipal history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDNY - The super historic market square off the village green at Witney in lovely West Oxfordshire, sitting on the river Windrush, about 12 or so miles from Morses Oxford after a rain shower. It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
