Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENAP4R - Two bright yellow CALM mental health posters displayed in a pub gents toilet, using beer glass imagery and pub-friendly language to encourage men and friends to check in with one another. The left poster carries the headline Cheers to Checking In and says CALM and Stonegate have joined forces to celebrate getting together with mates, sharing good times and recognising when someone may be struggling. The right poster reads Help CALM be there for everyone whose glass feels half empty and explains that Campaign Against Living Miserably is a suicide prevention charity that supports anyone struggling to stay in the game for another day. The setting is important because the message appears in a male social space where some people may feel more able to notice a friend's low mood, loneliness, anxiety, depression, money worries or change in behaviour. The visible text, pint glass graphics, QR code and donation message make the image suitable for editorial use around suicide prevention, men's mental health, peer support, pub culture, charity awareness, hospitality venues, social connection and public health communication. Stonegate Group announced a two-year partnership with CALM in 2026, with CALM messaging appearing across pubs, bars and venues through in-venue signage and digital screens. The photograph can support stories about how charities reach people outside clinical settings, how informal conversations can reduce isolation, and how pubs can be used as community spaces for awareness campaigns. It also has relevance for workplace wellbeing, hospitality social responsibility, fundraising, mental health stigma, early intervention, support for mates, and the idea that asking a simple question in an everyday setting may help someone feel less alone. The image should be handled sensitively, avoiding sensational language, and framed around support, prevention, hope and practical human connection.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG2W - This image shows a large, colourful LEEDS sign mounted within the interior of Leeds railway station in West Yorkshire, England. The sign uses bold lettering across a series of bright, patterned panels, creating a distinctive visual identity that clearly announces the city to arriving and departing passengers. Positioned above the station concourse area, the sign forms part of the station's wayfinding and branding, reinforcing Leeds as a major regional destination.
Leeds railway station is one of the busiest stations outside London and a key transport hub in the north of England. Serving the East Coast Main Line and numerous regional routes, it provides vital connections between Leeds, London, Manchester, Sheffield, York, the North East, and Scotland. The station plays a central role in daily commuter travel as well as long-distance intercity services, reflecting Leeds' importance as a commercial, financial, cultural, and educational centre.
The modern interior setting, combined with contemporary graphic design, reflects ongoing investment in passenger experience and urban transport infrastructure. This image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to rail travel, public transport, city identity, tourism, urban regeneration, and the role of major railway stations as gateways to UK cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T267HE - Our vision is to improve residents' lives and landlords' services through housing complaints.
All local authorities and registered social housing providers are required to be members of the Housing Ombudsman Scheme. We also have several private landlords and letting agents who have joined voluntarily.
The Housing Ombudsman Scheme sets out our role, what complaints we can consider and the obligations of our members.
We are an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. The Framework Document sets out the respective responsibilities and accountability of the Housing Ombudsman, the Secretary of State and officials within the Department.
What we do
We investigate complaints and resolve disputes involving the tenants and leaseholders of social landlords (housing associations and local authorities), as well as for our voluntary members (private landlords and letting agents).
Investigating these complaints is a free, independent, and impartial service and this work is funded by annual landlord subscription fees.
We work with the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGSCO) and the Regulator of Social Housing, under a memorandum of understanding, to agree a common approach to collaborative working. We have included the LGSCO and the regulator's Memorandum of Understanding documents if you'd like to know more.
Who we are
We are made up of three directorates:
Quality, Engagement and Development
Dispute Support & Resolution
Finance and Corporate Services
These teams are supported by our Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Operational Leadership Team.
We collaborate with an Audit and Risk Assurance Committee (ARAC), an Advisory Board and an Independent Reviewer of Service Complaints to support our activities, encourage external perspectives and continually improve our performance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ER9NJ2 - A passenger feedback unit inside Manchester Airport asks travellers whether they are satisfied with the cleanliness of the toilets. The wall-mounted sign carries the MAG Manchester Airport identity and the question Satisfied with the cleanliness of these toilets? , while a FeedbackNow device below offers green, amber and red face buttons for an immediate rating. The wording Your feedback powers our operations shows how live customer responses can help airport facilities teams monitor washroom standards, identify problems and direct cleaning resources.
The image documents a practical example of passenger-experience technology in an international transport setting. Airport toilets are heavily used facilities where cleanliness, hygiene, maintenance and rapid response can affect customer satisfaction. Simple push-button surveys allow passengers to register an opinion quickly, creating operational data that can support service monitoring, contractor performance, cleaning schedules.
Manchester Airport is operated by Manchester Airports Group, known as MAG. Its ownership is shared between Manchester City Council, the nine other Greater Manchester local authorities and IFM Global Infrastructure Fund. The ten councils collectively hold 64.5 per cent, so the airport is majority publicly owned rather than wholly owned by the boroughs. Manchester is a major international aviation hub serving northern England.
The airport completed a ten-year, £1.3 billion transformation centred on an enlarged and modernised Terminal 2. By March 2026, Terminal 2 had more than doubled in size, handled over 75 per cent of passengers and replaced the former three-terminal arrangement with a two-terminal operation. This photograph is relevant to airport refurbishment, passenger services, customer feedback, hygiene standards, cleaning contracts, washroom management, real-time data collection and the operational pressures of running a large transport hub

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGAYND - Cherwell Valley services is a Moto motorway service station on the M40 motorway at Stoke Lyne, near Bicester, in Oxfordshire, England. In August 2011 it was rated as 3 stars by quality assessors at Visit England
however, it is unknown whether this was a rating of the new or temporary building.
Location
The services are located at junction 10 of the M40, and are accessed from a roundabout on the junction.
Despite its name, it is neither in the valley nor the drainage basin of the Cherwell, but rather beside a small east-flowing stream that becomes part of the Padbury Brook before joining the Great Ouse at Buckingham.
History
The former main building
It was opened in the spring of 1994 and gave the 89-mile motorway its first service station, more than three years after its completion. The site was previously occupied by a toilet facility, which had been there since the motorway's opening.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JK3E - Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. There are six types, all of which are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fibre being composed of many microscopic fibrils that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other processes. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to various dangerous lung conditions, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer, so it is now notorious as a serious health and safety hazard.
Archaeological studies have found evidence of asbestos being used as far back as the Stone Age to strengthen ceramic pots, but large-scale mining began at the end of the 19th century when manufacturers and builders began using asbestos for its desirable physical properties. Asbestos is an excellent electrical insulator and is highly fire-resistant, so for much of the 20th century it was very commonly used across the world as a building material, until its adverse effects on human health were more widely acknowledged in the 1970s. Many modern buildings constructed before the 1980s are thought to contain asbestos.
The use of asbestos for construction and fireproofing has been made illegal in many countries. Despite this, at least 100,000 people are thought to die each year from diseases related to asbestos exposure. In part, this is because many older buildings still contain asbestos
in addition, the consequences of exposure can take decades to arise. The most common diseases associated with chronic asbestos exposure are asbestosis (scarring of the lungs due to asbestos inhalation) and mesothelioma (a type of cancer)

According to a report by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) “ appropriately titled Taking the P*** “ a fifth of Britons don't leave their home as often as they'd like because they know they'll struggle to find facilities, a phenomenon known as loo leash . For those with medical conditions, this affects more than four in 10. Ever found yourself deliberately not drinking in case you get caught short? Over half the public intentionally dehydrate themselves for fear of not finding a loo, according to the report.
By next year, 60% of government funding for local authority services will have vanished compared with 2010
The people must take to the urinals, conveniences and the cubicles, or what remains of them, because the right to pee is under threat. The decline of the public toilet “ leaving us creeping into pubs and hoping to avoid the disapproving glare of the bartender “ is just one symptom of the assault on the public realm. By next year, 60% of government funding for local authority services will have vanished compared with 2010. Toilets are not statutory services “ that is, councils are not legally obliged to provide them “ and so hundreds have been axed. The British Toilet Association tells me that up to half of public loos may have been closed over the last decade. In Cornwall, the council has stopped maintaining 94% of its toilets. Three in four Britons polled think there are not enough facilities within their communities. But why should we be resigned to this, legs firmly crossed, as a fact of life? Why is removing waste from our doorsteps regarded as an essential, universal service, but allowing us to remove waste from our bodies is not?
The public realm has been subordinated to the whims of the market and profit for over a generation, and toilets are no exception. You'll often need to spend considerably more than a penny to have a pee.

Hilton Park features a large tower structure which used by Top Rank to house a restaurant. It closed and has been empty since the 1980s.
It became the UK's busiest service area, and was an obvious target when Granada wanted to add retail units to the front of their service areas. These units have changed brands many times over the years, including being used as a Trucker's Lounge and Moto's first KFC. They are mostly closed now, though one is used by the Central Motorway Policing Group.
The southbound service area has a picnic area far from the main building, with its own car park, which most people miss because they're looking for the main facilities. It is a legacy feature of some older service areas and only actually has one table left. Most of the parking spaces have now been turned into a Tesla charging area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8TX - As one of the few explicitly gender-separated spaces, the toilet has become a prominent site of conflict and a focal point for ˜gender-critical' feminism. In this article we draw upon an AHRC-funded project, Around the Toilet, to reflect upon and critique trans-exclusionary and trans-hostile narratives of toilet spaces. Such narratives include ciscentric, heteronormative and gender essentialist positions within toilet research and activism which, for example, equate certain actions and bodily functions (such as menstruation) to a particular gender, decry the need for all-gender toilets, and cast suspicion upon the intentions of trans women in public toilet spaces. These include explicitly transmisogynist discourses perpetuated largely by those calling themselves ˜gender-critical' feminists, but also extend to national media, right-wing populist discourses and beyond. We use Around the Toilet data to argue that access to safe and comfortable toilets plays a fundamental role in making trans lives possible. Furthermore, we contend that “ whether naive, ignorant or explicitly transphobic “ trans-exclusionary positions do little to improve toilet access for the majority, instead putting trans people, and others with visible markers of gender difference, at a greater risk of violence, and participating in the dangerous homogenisation of womanhood. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A7R - Westminster is a London Underground station in the City of Westminster. It is served by the Circle, District and Jubilee lines. On the Circle and District lines, the station is between St James's Park and Embankment, and on the Jubilee line it is between Green Park and Waterloo. It is in Travelcard Zone 1. The station is located at the corner of Bridge Street and Victoria Embankment and is close to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster Bridge, and the London Eye. Also close by are Downing Street, the Cenotaph, Westminster Millennium Pier, the Treasury, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the Supreme Court.
The station is in two parts: sub-surface platforms opened in 1868 by the District Railway (DR) as part of the company's first section of the Inner Circle route and deep level platforms opened in 1999 as part of the Jubilee line extension from Green Park to Stratford. A variety of underground and main line services have operated over the sub-surface tracks, but the original station was completely rebuilt in conjunction with the construction of the deep level platforms and Portcullis House, which sits above the station.
The station was opened as Westminster Bridge on 24 December 1868 by the steam-operated District Railway (DR) (now the District line) when the railway opened the first section of its line from South Kensington.
As part of the Transported by Design programme of activities, on 15 October 2015, after two months of public voting, Westminster tube station was elected by Londoners as one of the 10 favourite transport design icons.
The station is in London fare zone 1. On the District and Circle lines, the station is between St James's Park and Embankment, and, on the Jubilee line, it is between Green Park and Waterloo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHPYEX - Liverpool South Parkway station is a railway station and bus interchange in the Garston district of Liverpool, England. It serves, via a bus link, Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the neighbouring suburb of Speke, as well as providing an interchange between main line services and the Merseyrail rapid transit/commuter rail network
The station is located towards the southern end of Merseyrail's Northern Line and on the junction of two main lines: the City Line from Liverpool to Manchester via Warrington and the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line to London via Crewe
Allerton Traction Maintenance Depot is situated to the immediate east of the station
The station was built at a crossing point between two railway lines that had until then been served by separate stations. The first was the Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) line from Liverpool Central to Manchester via Warrington Central, which ran from west to east. The second was the line built by the St Helens Railway from Liverpool Lime Street to Warrington Bank Quay, which crossed from northwest to southeast. The latter route became part of the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line when it was connected to a new route from Crewe via the newly built Runcorn Railway Bridge. The original line to Warrington Bank Quay is now closed to passenger trains. The two lines were served by two separate stations in the area, respectively Garston and Allerton (though the latter was also located in Garston)
The first proposals for an interchange station at Garston were made in the 1960s and 1970s, when the Merseyrail semi-underground network was being planned

Virgin Trains has turned to humour to tackle the vexed problem of blocked lavatories
In the heyday of British Rail, gentlemen were urged to lift the seat when using the lavatories,
Now rather more explicit instructions are being given to Passengers.htm Target=_Blank>passengers on Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Trains services to the west midlands, north west England and Scotland.
After the lavatory door shuts passengers are greeted with a pre-recorded message.
It declares: Please don't flush nappies, sanitary towels, paper towels, gum, old phones, unpaid bills, junk mail, your ex's sweater, hopes, dreams or goldfish down this toilet.
Lavatories have already been adapted on the fleet of 20 Voyager trains and work is under way on its 56 tilting Pendolino trains.
At times there have been problems with lavatories being blocked by inappropriate items flushed down the bowl.
Passenger forums suggest that the issue of blocked lavatories is a major source of annoyance for the travelling public
This has prompted Virgin, which earlier this year was given an extension of its franchise on the West Coast Main Line, to act.
When lavatories get blocked it means trains have to be taken out of service, a spokesman said.
It is also a huge inconvenience to passengers especially on a long trip.
We wanted to do something which would grab people's attention and a talking toilet does get the message across.
They are being well received, but time will tell. We're trying to face a serious issue in a chummy, informal way.
The initiative was welcomed by Antony Smith, chief executive of the consumer watchdog, Passenger Focus.
It can be frustrating to find that toilets are out of order or blocked, so hopefully the announcements will help this happen less.
Anything that gets useful information across to passengers in a fun way is to be welcomed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWH5 - A urinal is a sanitary plumbing fixture for urination only. Urinals are usually used in a standing position and are popular with male users. Urinals can be with automatic or manual flushing, or without flush water as is the case for waterless urinals. They can be arranged as single sanitary fixtures (with or without privacy walls) or in a trough design without privacy walls.
The term urinal may also apply to a small building or other structure containing such fixtures. It can also refer to a small container in which urine can be collected for medical analysis, or for use where access to toilet facilities is not possible, such as in small aircraft, during extended stakeouts, or for the bedridden.
Urinals designed for females (female urinals) also exist on the market but are not widespread. It is possible for females to use male urinals with a female urination device.
Urinals for high throughput capacity are part of an efficiently designed washroom architecture. Large numbers of them are usually installed along a common supply pipe and drain. There may or may not be partitions installed for privacy.
Urinals in high-capacity washrooms are usually arranged in one or more rows directly opposite the door, so that users have their backs to people entering or standing outside. Urinals in the street may be arranged in a circle, with all users facing the center, with partitions high enough that they cannot wet each other, and usually high enough that they cannot see over. In a street urinal with an outside screen or wall, the users may stand back to back.
Often, one or two of the urinals, typically at one end of a long row, will be mounted lower than the others
they are meant for the disabled and other users who cannot reach the regular urinals. In facilities where people of various heights are present, such as schools, urinals that extend down to floor level may be used to allow anyone of any height to use any urinal.
Instead of individual fixtures, trough urinals

Designers of urinals for women have adopted various approaches: some intending the user to hover over the unit, facing away from it, others intending the user to stand facing the urinal, with or without a female urination device. While uncommon due to restroom segregation, it is possible for females to use male urinals

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0BH - These underground toilets in St Giles' were built in 1895. They were for gentlemen only, as there was no question in Victorian times of building an outdoor public convenience for women.
Work on excavating the site had started by 17 August 1895, when the following report appeared in Jackson's Oxford Journal:
DISCOVERY OF RELICS.” During the excavation which has been made in connection with the new underground public convenience in St. Giles's the workmen came upon a large quantity of bones and horns, apparently those of oxen and deer, at a depth of about 7ft., a pair of horns being in excellent preservation
they also found a stoneware jug, minus the handle and broken at the spout, and two small cups made of red pottery and glazed, both much damaged.
Toilet railings
The work was completed by 12 October 1895, when Jackson's Oxford Journal reported:
Corporation works
An underground convenience has been built near the southern end of St. Giles-street, containing two w.c.'s and four urinals. These are reached by a flight of York stone steps from the surface of the street, and the structure is surrounded by a strong cast-iron railing on York stone base. The fittings are in the best white glazed ware, and the whole of the brickwork is lined internally with white and buff glazed bricks, the floor being of vitrified tiles laid upon concrete. The convenience is roofed with cement concrete carried upon steel girders, with pavement lights, cast-iron ventilators, &c.
There was originally just one entrance (the present southern one), and the railings surrounding are inscribed with the name of their maker, LUCY & CO, OXFORD (right) A second entrance with matching railings was built at a later date.

A free standing outside toilet / WC as would have been seen in the back yards of British terraced back to back housing. While tenements and closes were more prominent in Scotland, this was the typical english workers house loo.
this reminds me of my dads brother my uncle Arthur. When he moved his bathroom and toilet indoors he took pride in keeping his outdoor privy. Although it became rather proudly his white wine cellar in winter.
I once was on a health and safety course. There was a story about a man arriving to hospital with a fractured skull. When he came around apparently a toilet tank had collapsed on to him while on the toilet. Apparently he had pulled the chain and the bracket had collapsed.
When asked 'Why on earth did you do that', he replied 'Just to see what it felt like!'
...these people should get out more, life on the edge...mmmmnnn!

I remember when backpacking in Japan back 20 years ago, the rage was heated toilet seats. Thermostatically controlled mind.
Every Ryoken or house (but not temple) offering B&
B seemed to yank up the temperature to 30 degrees for gaijin (foreigners or outsiders), while others probably like me discreetly switched them off (together with stool analysis and a number of other innovations that have thankfully never left Japan). So think about how lucky you are when you next complain about that chilly bog seat.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BM3JP6 - Non-flushing water closets”portable pieces of furniture with removable containers for waste”became the standard in pre-Victorian Britain, though many households continued to rely on the backyard privy. The problem of waste disposal”whether from a chamber pot or from an overused hole in the ground”remained.
The Victorians made the connection between unsanitary conditions and disease that the Elizabethans hadn't and developed municipal sewer systems to try to keep their cities cleaner. The problem was that they didn't have a good way of connecting individual households to the system. Non-flushing water closets could be dressed up, but their contents couldn't be taken out. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries (about the same time the sewers were built), English patents were granted for several different types of water-closet valves, but their flushing actions were pretty inefficient. The wall mounted cistern that became popular in the 1870s vastly improved the situation because it provided a large volume of water under more pressure. Water-closet bowls remained a problem, though, because their rudimentary traps didn't do a very good job of either letting waste go down the drain or keeping sewer gases out of the building. At first these bowls were made of earthenware and glazed with sometimes-elaborate designs. In 1885, Thomas Twyford built the first vitreous china toilet, inspiring competition from other notable English potteries such as Wedgwood and Doulton
it wasn't long before vitreous china became the standard for the fledgling industry.
American inventors were also seeking solutions to the problem of building a sanitary water closet. As early as 1875, James Henry and William Campbell patented a plunger-type water closet
over the next 50 or so years more than 350 applications for patents for various types of water-closet designs were received by the U.S. patent office. In 1907
