In August 2006, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council announced that after 125 years of municipal ownership, Blackburn Transport had been sold to Transdev Blazefield. The 1
Following a ?2.5 million investment in the service, The 1 was rebranded in January 2020. Features include free WiFi, USB and wireless charging and audio-visual next stop announcements.

Merseyrail operates 66 railway stations across two lines ? the Northern Line and the Wirral Line, which are dedicated 750 V DC third rail electrified lines converging into rapid transit-style underground sections in the centres of Liverpool and Birkenhead. The first part of the urban network was opened in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by constructing new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. The full 1970s plans for the network were not realised, but the network has been extended on its peripheries with additional peripheral extensions proposed. The extensions were created by electrifying existing lines and then transferring the electrified sections into Merseyrail.
Merseyrail is operated for Merseytravel by 50:50 joint venture Serco-Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The 25-year contract expires in 2028, with the aspiration of the Liverpool City Region government being to bring the network and its infrastructure under local public ownership. The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.

Location
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The V??gte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein f?r Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. Warrington Borough Council's move into its offices in Time Square is bringing significant savings for the local authority, new figures show.
The council relocated from the New Town House site, and other administrative buildings, in late 2020/early 2021, to reduce the excessive running costs of the outdated office accommodation, and provide a better, modern environment for staff and customers.
With council staff now having been at the ?23m ?1 Time Square' building for the past 18 months ? which is a much more efficient building than the previous New Town House site - financial analysis shows that the move to the building is saving the council almost three quarters of a million pounds each year.
Previously, the council paid an annual rent and service charge for the New Town House and Quattro buildings, on top of costs such as business rates and maintenance. In addition, the council paid the running costs of its Rylands Street offices and the Customer Contact Centre on Horsemarket Street. The total equivalent cost for this was ?3.1m per year.
As part of the move to Time Square, the council purchased New Town House and Quattro, to fix repayment costs and avoid the uncontrollable escalation associated with leasing the buildings, including being exposed to increasing energy costs in an inefficient building.
Under this new operation, the equivalent costs to the council ? covering the borrowing costs for the building of 1 Time Square and its running costs, along with the continuing annual borrowing costs for purchasing the New Town House and Quattro buildings - are ?2.3m. This represents an annual saving for the council of ?741,000 a year.
Warrington Borough Council's Cabinet Member for finance, Cllr Cathy Mitchell, said: The move to 1 Time Square has brought huge benefits for the council and our customers. It's provided us with cutting edge, modern facilities

Wilderspool Settlement was a Roman Small Town with industrial functions with extensive bronze, iron and glass working industries, 1st-2nd century

no visible remains. The initial Roman settlement at Warrington was probably a mansio or wayside station towards the end of the 1st century AD
The settlement occupied a tongue-like strip of land, on hich ground, 41 feet above O.D., overlooking the plain and above flood-level. It was defended by the river Mersey on the north and by the Cress and Lum brooks on the west and east. It occupied an important strategic position at the head of the tidal portion of the Mersey at the place
where it can be first forded.
The Roman settlement was clearly a walled town with no evidence of a military camp. It probably became established as a mansio, at the ford, then a customs-town and port and finally developed into an industrial town. It was on the Brigantian frontier.
Wilderspool Wall Defences
The excavations revealed that the Roman town was defended by a wall with an outer ditch, forming an irregularly four-sided figure and enclosing an area of c.3 acres. Only the western side of these defences was fully excavated but the ditch was traced sufficiently to indicate the general plan. The wall was built of local sandstone facing to a core of rubble and clay and was 9-12 feet thick. Large buttress-like bases were found on the west and east sides and identified as ballistaria. There were traces of an angle tower on the rounded NW angle of the defences and, at this angle, a well-made causeway was found with vague indications of a gate. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, on 24 July 1987. It was renamed in 1992 as Crewe Railway Age by the owning registered charity but, after the management of the centre was taken over by a new group of volunteers, the museum returned to its original name of Crewe Heritage Centre in early 2008.
Exhibits
The centre has a series of exhibits, ranging from the only surviving APT-P train, miniature railways, three open signal boxes (Crewe Station A, Crewe North Junction and Exeter West) and a varied collection of standard gauge steam, diesel and electric locomotives, as well as occasional visiting locomotives. The Main Exhibition Hall features many artefacts and exhibits associated with Crewe, from its locomotive and carriage construction to its famous junction railway station. Brake Van rides are available to the public during special events.

Exeter West Signal Box was originally built as a temporary structure by the Great Western Railway in 1913 following the enlargement of Exeter St. David's station It was located to the west of the station, controlling the junction for the London & South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the goods lines avoiding the station, the engine shed and various yards.
The signal box contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers. The box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electrically from a new signal box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of Exeter West in 1985, the Exeter West Group moved in and dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference.
At first, all of the parts were moved to Bristol and a start was made on restoring the box to be a feature at Temple Meads station. However, by summer 1988 it was clear that this project had foundered, but a home was offered at the proposed Swindon Heritage Centre. Everything was moved there, and restoration work continued until 1990. However a seemingly indefinite postponement of the heritage project at Swindon made it necessary to seek another site.
Finally a home was found here at Crewe. Having moved all of the many parts, a start was finally made on the complex task of putting the box back together again in May 1991, the structure was complete and weatherproofed by the end of that year, and the Internal rebuilding continued through 1992. The signal box was formally opened to the public on May Day 1993.

BEGINNING AS ALPINA GERMANY
The name Dugena is one of Germany's most famous watch brands. The roots of the company lie in Switzerland, namely with the Swiss watchmaker association Corporation d'Horlogers Suisse, which was founded in 1883 by Gottlieb Hauser. This was called Union Horlog??re from 1901 and presented itself at this time with the brand name Alpina, which was first used as the name of a proprietary caliber.
RENAMING OF THE GERMAN ALPINA TO DUGENA
From about 1909, there is a branch in Glash?tte, which bears the name Pr??cisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina. 1917 the Deutsche Uhrmachergenossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaker cooperative Alpina) is created by the concentration of the watch factories Biel-Geneva and Glash?tte in Eisenach. 1927 their headquarters is moved to Berlin.
During World War II, the Allies prohibit the Union Horlog??re to continue to market in Germany under the name Alpina. Therefore, 1942 in Berlin it is decided to rename Alpina into DUGENA - Deutsche Uhrmacher-Genossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaking cooperative Alpina). As a unique trademark the circle in the triangle is chosen, under which the new brand achieves a high level of awareness.
GREAT SUCCESS AFTER THE WAR
1948, the headquarters of Dugena, which had been in the eastern part of Berlin, is moved to Darmstadt. Under the successful management of the director Willi Tempel Dugena becomes a byword for reliable and modern quality watches in West Germany.
The years of the Wirtschaftswunder (German economic miracle after the war) as well as the 1960s and the 1970s bring unparalleled success to the company. Both with ladies watches as with men's watches the brand gaines a considerable reputation. As one of only very few watch manufacturers Dugena is not affected by the quartz crisis, as it manages to establish itself with high quality quartz collections and is thereby open to new buyer generations. Etymology
The name 'Moore' comes from the Old English word mor, meaning 'moor, or fen'. The village's earliest recording was as Mora, some time in the 12th century.
History
Moore is the site of a disused railway station named Daresbury. The railway station was opened in 1850 and was located on the south side of Runcorn Road. The station was closed to passengers in 1952 and closed completely in 1965. The platforms and ramps down from road are still visible from Runcorn Road. The railway station was situated on the Birkenhead Joint Railway close to Warrington and in the village of Moore. The railway station was the second to open in the village. The first railway station which was very close by was part of the Grand Junction Railway which opened on 4 July 1837. Moore was a second class station at which a First Class train would not stop. The engineer for the northern half of the new railway was Joseph Locke who became a famous as a railway engineer. The date of closure of Moore railway station is uncertain. Daresbury railway station was initially called Moore but the name was changed to Daresbury in April 1861 taking its name from a village a mile or so away.
The area of Moore to the north of the West Coast Main Line and west of Moss Lane was designated as part of Runcorn New Town in 1964 and the land allocated to industry. The New Town Masterplan was amended in 1975 to reduce the amount of industrial land around the village and to create a green buffer between it and what would become Manor Park Industrial Estate

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JW7 - Though an earlier license had existed on part of the current site of The Temple Bar, we can directly trace the existing license back to 1835 when enterprising publican, Cornelius O'Meara, Grocer, Tea, Wine, and Spirit Merchant acquired the blossoming location at the corner of Temple Lane and adjacent to Samuel Figgis, Porter Merchant, who ran his thriving brewing business here. The city of Dublin was experiencing something of an economic renaissance at this time and Temple Bar was idyllically laced between the river and the administrative centre of Dublin.
O'Meara was a committed publican intent on spreading his wings. He also ran another pub at No. 1 Wood Quay. This was then at the epicentre of Dublin 19th century rag trade. O'Meara's two nearest neighbours were Christopher McCauley, Hat Manufacturer, and Edward Loman, Hatter.
O'Meara served almost a decade at the Temple Bar Pub before he sold out to James Farley, Grocer and Spirit Merchant in 1844. James Farley knew the business here very well, having made but a short journey from 38 East Essex Street where he had operated as a Provisions dealer. James Farley's reign at this old hostelery was of brief duration.
The Great Famine was raging across the country with unprecedented horror and devastation when William Cranston, a much respected Dublin publican, took the wheel in 1847.
During the middle to late 1850s, a new wave of Provisions, Dealers and Dram Grocers had infiltrated the Temple Bar area. They operated the practise of ?dram-drinking'. The Dram Grocers allowed customers to buy spirits in an off-sales liquor store capacity and illegally consume them on the premises behind screens and makeshift partitions. This practice created much financial hardship for the authorities and regular or legitimate vintners (wine merchants).
William Cranston was a member of the License Trade delegation who traveled to lobby the British Parliament in Westminster, London, in 1863 to have this practice forbidden

History
Terminus: 1862?1873
The station opened on 31 March 1862 when the West Somerset Railway (WSR) opened from Norton Junction (later Norton Fitzwarren), serving as the WSR's original line terminus. Watchet was chosen as the WSR line's terminus, as it had been since the Middle Ages an important regional port on the Bristol Channel. Local iron ore, timber and paper products were exported, whilst from the same time, it had become an important national port for the import of French wine and salt. The commercial aim of the WSR in choosing Watchet as its terminus was hence to provide a wider and cheaper distribution route for goods from the port.
The GWR increased the capacity of the line in the 1930s. Because of the position of the goods shed opposite the platform, it was not possible to add a second track and platform, and a passing loop was constructed at Kentford just 0.75 miles (1.21 km) west of the station. It opened on 10 July 1933 but the signal box was only used during the daytime each summer.
Nationalisation in 1948 saw the GWR become the Western Region of British Railways. On 24 August 1952, the signal box at Washford closed, and the one at Kentford remained open until 7 May 1964 when it also closed. Freight traffic was withdrawn on 6 July 1964 and passenger trains on 4 January 1971.
Preservation
The station was reopened by the new West Somerset Railway on 28 August 1976

Situated in the south-central Berlin borough of Tempelhof-Sch??neberg, the airport ceased operating in 2008 amid controversy, leaving Tegel and Sch??nefeld as the two main airports serving the city for another twelve years until both were replaced by Berlin Brandenburg Airport in 2020.
Tempelhof was designated as an airport by the Reich Ministry of Transport on 8 October 1923. The old terminal was originally constructed in 1927. In anticipation of increasing air traffic, the Nazi government began an enormous reconstruction in the mid-1930s. While it was occasionally cited as the world's oldest operating commercial airport, the title was disputed by several other airports, and is no longer an issue since its closure.
Tempelhof was one of Europe's three iconic pre-World War II airports, the others being London's now defunct Croydon Airport and the old Paris?Le Bourget Airport. It acquired a further iconic status as the centre of the Berlin Airlift of 1948?49. One of the airport's most distinctive features is its huge, canopy-style roof extending over the apron, able to accommodate most contemporary airliners in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, protecting passengers from the elements. Tempelhof Airport's main building was once among the twenty largest buildings on earth, but it also formerly contained the world's smallest duty-free shop.
Tempelhof Airport closed all operations on 30 October 2008, despite the efforts of some protesters to prevent the closure. A non-binding referendum was held on 27 April 2008 against the impending closure but failed due to low voter turnout. The former airfield has subsequently been used as a recreational space known as Tempelhofer Feld. In September 2015, it was announced that Tempelhof would also become an emergency refugee camp.

Its in an unloved street near an old cabinet works building. On this day I passed the lights were on so I walked in. No tripod, so the panorama was hand held.
Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place.
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built.
Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham's Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.

It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.

Christchurch Priory is an ecclesiastical parish and former priory church in Christchurch in the English county of Dorset (formerly in Hampshire). Christchurch Priory is rated as in the top 18 churches in the Country and described by The Times as the least appreciated of the Great Churches of England. It is the longest parish church in the country and is larger than 21 English Anglican Cathedrals.
The legend of the miraculous beam dates to the early 12th century. The story is that a beam was found to have been cut too short when it was hoisted into place.
This would have been embarrassing for the carpenters since the wood was expensive and would be difficult to replace. There was however a mysterious carpenter who had worked and eaten alone. The day following the discovery, when the carpenters returned they found the beam was in place and it now fitted.
The unknown carpenter was never seen again, and the story came to be that it was Jesus Christ who had intervened. The church became Christ's Church of Twynham in commemoration of the event. In time the town became Twynham-Christchurch and eventually shortened to Christchurch. The beam can be seen today and is located in the Priory's Ambulatory.

Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world's more interesting when it's diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTNA3R - THERE is good news for electric vehicle drivers in and around Warrington, as the council has announced free electric charging at its Time Square car park and Warrington West station.
The initiative, which has been confirmed for at least the next six months, will help to support those who are making the switch from petrol and diesel to electric.
There are currently 56 charging points at the Time Square car park ? one of the highest number of charging points in a single location in the country ? with another 12 charging points available at the new Warrington West station.
The move to offering free electric vehicle charging comes after the council's climate emergency declaration in June.
The plans to encourage electric vehicle travel also support the council's Air Quality Action Plan, which aims to reduce nitrogen dioxide levels within the main, busy traffic routes leading into and around the town.
Cllr Judith Guthrie, cabinet member for environment, who drives an electric car herself, said: It's great news that I'm able to announce free charging points for electric vehicle users here in Warrington. It was originally founded in the early 12th century near the Church of St. Guthlac in town. After the church was ruined circa 1143, during the Anarchy, it relocated to a site between the present day Bath Street and Commercial Road at grid reference SO51534019.
It was disestablished in 1538 as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries during the English Reformation, and purchased by John Prise.

The new car park, which was due to open
in December 2017, is a great example of
how architects and contractors can work in
partnership with Maple to transform typically
dull and utilitarian buildings into an integral and
aesthetically appealing part of the urban realm.
With its hexagon-featured golden fa??ade, the
car park complements the other elements of
the ?107m Time Square development.
The new car park is an integral and important
part of the Time Square project as it will
underpin and support the whole scheme, said
the leader of Warrington Borough Council, Terry
O'Neill.
Architect's ratings
Leach Rhodes Walker described us as ?excellent'
after the successful collaboration. Maple's
knowledge and craftsmanship was excellent
throughout, said LRW's lead project designer,
Ka Yin Man. From when we spoke to sales
about the commercials, to (dealing with) the
design and projects teams, the whole experience
was collaborative. In a post-project interview,
the architects' firm gave us top marks for design
services, project support, meeting deadlines
and the quality of the finished product. Added
Ka Yin: Maple were always helpful, and any
questions were dealt with promptly. Everyone
was very knowledgeable and accommodating.
The end result was even better than expected
The project was one of the first to use the new
dedicated prototype area at Maple's factory in
Stockport. The architects and contractors I & H
Brown Construction were able to view real-life
examples of the bespoke perforated panels and
golden hexagon cut-outs - at actual size. The
prototypes were powder-coated in the specified
colour, and fitted to the display framework using
actual fittings - meaning that any changes to the
design or specification could be made without
it having a major impact on timings or budget

It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.
