Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFEG1R - Late evening interior view of Warrington Bus Station, also known as Warrington Interchange, showing an almost deserted public transport concourse with a bus timetable board in the foreground and security staff in high visibility jackets near the travel centre area. The image shows the Bus Times display for Warrington Interchange Stand 10, timetable information for CAT routes, tiled floors, red wall panels, ticket office windows, Network Warrington branding and the quiet atmosphere of a town centre transport hub outside the daytime rush. It is useful for editorial coverage of public transport, bus service information, evening travel, local mobility, town centre infrastructure, passenger safety, municipal bus services, timetable changes, transport funding and the experience of using buses outside peak hours. Warrington Interchange sits on Winwick Street beside Golden Square Shopping Centre and near Warrington Central railway station, linking local bus routes with shopping, rail travel, work, education, healthcare and leisure trips across the town and surrounding areas. The scene can illustrate the contrast between busy daytime commuter or shopping periods and quieter late-night public spaces, where visible staff presence, lighting, signage and clear timetable information all matter for passenger confidence. The photograph also works for stories about the role of bus stations as civic infrastructure, the challenge of maintaining useful evening services, town centre safety, accessible travel, local authority transport policy, fare information, journey planning and the shift from printed timetables to live digital travel information. Visible details include the timetable case, route tables, Travel Line and NextBuses references, clean white floor tiles, red modern wall panels, glazed service counters and a yellow caution sign. The absence of crowds gives the image a slightly stark documentary quality, making it commercially useful for themes around deserted transport hub

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RBXAM5 - Waterloo station also known as London Waterloo, is a central London terminus on the National Rail network in the United Kingdom, in the Waterloo area of the London Borough of Lambeth. It is connected to a London Underground station of the same name and is adjacent to Waterloo East station on the South Eastern Main Line. The station is the terminus of the South West Main Line to Weymouth via Southampton, the West of England main line to Exeter via Salisbury, the Portsmouth Direct line to Portsmouth Harbour which connects with ferry services to the Isle of Wight, and several commuter services around west and south-west London, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.
The station was opened in 1848 by the London and South Western Railway, and it replaced the earlier Nine Elms as it was closer to the West End. It was never designed to be a terminus, as the original intention was to continue the line towards the City of London, and consequently the station developed in a haphazard fashion, leading to difficulty finding the correct platform. The station was rebuilt in the early 20th century, opening in 1922, and included the Victory Arch over the main entrance, which commemorated World War I. Waterloo was the last London terminus to provide steam-powered services, which ended in 1967. The station was the London terminus for Eurostar international trains from 1994 until 2007, when they were transferred to St. Pancras.
Waterloo is the busiest railway station in the UK, handling 41 million passengers in the year to March 2022. It is also the UK's largest station in terms of floor space and has the greatest number of platforms.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YB67 - Liverpool Street station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London, in the ward of Bishopsgate Without. It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. During the First World War, an air raid on the station killed 16 on site, and 146 others in nearby areas. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing and, during the 7 July 2005 bombing, seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train, just after it had departed from Liverpool Street. New platforms for the Elizabeth line opened in 2022 as part of the Crossrail project.
Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station, with provision for the Underground. A tube station opened in 1875 for the Metropolitan Railway
the tube station is now served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. It is in fare zone 1 and is managed directly by Network Rail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R1WX3R - Merseyrail is a commuter rail network serving the Liverpool City Region and adjacent areas of Cheshire and Lancashire. Merseyrail operates 66 railway stations across two lines “ the Northern Line and the Wirral Line, which are dedicated 750 V DC third rail electrified lines converging into rapid transit-style underground sections in the centres of Liverpool and Birkenhead. Merseyrail branding is also applied to stations and ticketing on the City Line, which are within the Liverpool City Region but operated by other train operating companies, predominantly Northern Trains. The City Line services operate on the Liverpool to Manchester Lines and the Liverpool to Wigan Line using a mix of AC electric and diesel trains.
The Merseyrail third rail network has 68 stations, 66 of which are managed by the company,[a] and 120.7 km (75.0 miles) of routes,[1] of which 6.5 miles (10.5 km) are underground. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the network carried 31 million passengers per year.
The first part of the urban network was opened in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by constructing new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. The full 1970s plans for the network were not realised, but the network has been extended on its peripheries with additional peripheral extensions proposed. The extensions were created by electrifying existing lines and then transferring the electrified sections into Merseyrail.
Merseyrail is operated for Merseytravel by 50:50 joint venture Serco-Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The 25-year contract expires in 2028, with the aspiration of the Liverpool City Region government being to bring the network and its infrastructure under local public ownership. As of 2015, Serco-Abellio operates a fleet of 59 trains and employs 1,148 people

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJ2A5R - Bacharach (pronunciation (help·info), also known as Bacharach am Rhein) is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.
Geography
Location
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The Vögte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein für Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

The location is Market St, Wigan, Lancashire, England, UK, WN1 1HX. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains platform, concourse or service signage details that place the railway scene in a real working transport environment. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Wigan, town, centre, Wigan bus station, Market Street, Market St, WN1, stands, stand, Bee Network, Lancs, Lancashire, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It has value for both local and national stories, especially where writers need to connect a named place or object with wider economic, social, environmental or cultural change. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastructure, consumer behaviour, community identity and documentary evidence for newsletters, blogs, policy papers and web features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6GYK8 - Paddington, also known as London Paddington, is a Central London railway terminus and London Underground station complex, located on Praed Street in the Paddington area. The site has been the London terminus of services provided by the Great Western Railway and its successors since 1838. Much of the main line station dates from 1854 and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Paddington is the London terminus of the Great Western Main Line
passenger services are primarily operated by Great Western Railway, which provides commuter and regional passenger services to west London and the Thames Valley region, as well as long-distance intercity services to South West England and South Wales. The station is also the eastern terminus for Heathrow Express and the western terminus for Elizabeth line services from Shenfield. Elizabeth line services also run through Paddington westwards to Reading, Heathrow Terminal 5, and Heathrow Terminal 4, and eastwards to Abbey Wood. Situated in fare zone 1, it has two separate tube stations providing connections to the Bakerloo, Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines. It is one of 11 London stations managed directly by Network Rail.
The station has been perennially popular for passengers and goods, particularly milk and parcels. Major upgrades took place in the 1870s, the 1910s and the 1960s, each trying to add additional platforms and space while trying to preserve the existing services and architecture as much as possible. Paddington was first served by London Underground trains in 1863, as the original western terminus of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway. In the 20th century, suburban and commuter services appeared at Paddington as the urban sprawl of London moved westwards. Despite the numerous upgrades and rebuilding, plus damage sustained in particular during World War II, Brunel's original design is still recognisable.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BJG - Wilderspool Roman Town
Iron-work, Minor Settlement, Pottery and Temple Or Shrine
Wilderspool Settlement was a Roman Small Town with industrial functions with extensive bronze, iron and glass working industries, 1st-2nd century
later 3rd/4th century occupation The site was defended by a ditch and wall
no visible remains. The initial Roman settlement at Warrington was probably a mansio or wayside station towards the end of the 1st century AD
The settlement occupied a tongue-like strip of land, on hich ground, 41 feet above O.D., overlooking the plain and above flood-level. It was defended by the river Mersey on the north and by the Cress and Lum brooks on the west and east. It occupied an important strategic position at the head of the tidal portion of the Mersey at the place
where it can be first forded.
The Roman settlement was clearly a walled town with no evidence of a military camp. It probably became established as a mansio, at the ford, then a customs-town and port and finally developed into an industrial town. It was on the Brigantian frontier.
Wilderspool Wall Defences
The excavations revealed that the Roman town was defended by a wall with an outer ditch, forming an irregularly four-sided figure and enclosing an area of c.3 acres. Only the western side of these defences was fully excavated but the ditch was traced sufficiently to indicate the general plan. The wall was built of local sandstone facing to a core of rubble and clay and was 9-12 feet thick. Large buttress-like bases were found on the west and east sides and identified as ballistaria. There were traces of an angle tower on the rounded NW angle of the defences and, at this angle, a well-made causeway was found with vague indications of a gate. At the south-west angle of the wall, the main Roman road from the south entered the town and the traces of the pillars of a gateway were found. - More at https://www.roman-britain.co.uk/places/wilderspool/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M5K - The 405-line monochrome analogue television broadcasting system was the first fully electronic television system to be used in regular broadcasting. The number of television lines influences the image resolution, or quality of the picture.
It was introduced with the BBC Television Service in 1936, suspended for the duration of World War II, and remained in operation in the UK until 1985. It was also used between 1961 and 1982 in Ireland, as well as from 1957 to 1973 for the Rediffusion Television cable service in Hong Kong.
Sometimes called the Marconi-EMI system, it was developed in 1934 by the EMI Research Team led by Isaac Shoenberg. The figure of 405 lines had been chosen following discussions over Sunday lunch at the home of Alan Blumlein. The system used interlacing
EMI had been experimenting with a 243-line all-electronic interlaced system since 1933. In the 405 system the scanning lines were broadcast in two complementary fields, 50 times per second, creating 25 frames per second. The actual image was 376 lines high and interlaced, with additional unused lines making the frame up to 405 lines to give the slow circuitry time to prepare for the next frame
in modern terms it would be described as 376i.
At the time of its introduction the 405-line system was referred to as high definition “ which it was, compared to earlier systems, although of lower definition than 625-line and later standards.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M5P - Vintage British monochrome television receiver stands inside a domestic interior, its deep wooden cabinet, rounded cathode-ray-tube screen, front loudspeaker grille and large rotary controls recalling the early decades of mass television ownership. A newspaper has been placed across the top of the set, reinforcing the period atmosphere and the historic relationship between printed news and broadcast media. The black-and-white photograph provides a strong visual contrast with today's slim digital displays, smart televisions, smartphones and portable streaming devices.
The receiver represents Britain's former 405-line television system, which produced a comparatively coarse black-and-white picture transmitted through the VHF network. For much of the early commercial television era, viewers had a sharply limited choice compared with the hundreds of channels and near-unlimited online libraries now available. BBC Television and ITV formed the familiar two-channel landscape before BBC2 launched in 1964 using the higher-definition 625-line standard. Older 405-line broadcasting nevertheless remained operational for many years and was not finally closed until 1985.
Television ownership also carried a legal obligation to obtain a UK television licence, making the set not merely an entertainment appliance but part of a regulated national broadcasting system. Scheduled programmes, fixed transmission times and published listings shaped domestic routines, with families often gathering around a single screen to watch the same entertainment, news, sport or major national event.
The image also works as an editorial illustration for the continuing debate over the future of traditional television. Linear broadcast viewing has declined significantly, particularly among children and younger adults, as audiences increasingly favour YouTube, subscription streaming,short-form video and programmes available whenever they choose. Ofcom reported that broadcast television's long-term decline

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNK8 - Berlin Tempelhof Airport (German: Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof) (formerly IATA: THF, ICAO: EDDI) was one of the first airports in Berlin, Germany. Situated in the south-central Berlin borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, the airport ceased operating in 2008 amid controversy, leaving Tegel and Schönefeld as the two main airports serving the city for another twelve years until both were replaced by Berlin Brandenburg Airport in 2020.
Tempelhof was designated as an airport by the Reich Ministry of Transport on 8 October 1923. The old terminal was originally constructed in 1927. In anticipation of increasing air traffic, the Nazi government began an enormous reconstruction in the mid-1930s. While it was occasionally cited as the world's oldest operating commercial airport, the title was disputed by several other airports, and is no longer an issue since its closure.
Tempelhof was one of Europe's three iconic pre-World War II airports, the others being London's now defunct Croydon Airport and the old Paris“Le Bourget Airport. It acquired a further iconic status as the centre of the Berlin Airlift of 1948“49. One of the airport's most distinctive features is its huge, canopy-style roof extending over the apron, able to accommodate most contemporary airliners in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, protecting passengers from the elements. Tempelhof Airport's main building was once among the twenty largest buildings on earth, but it also formerly contained the world's smallest duty-free shop.
Tempelhof Airport closed all operations on 30 October 2008, despite the efforts of some protesters to prevent the closure. A non-binding referendum was held on 27 April 2008 against the impending closure but failed due to low voter turnout. The former airfield has subsequently been used as a recreational space known as Tempelhofer Feld. In September 2015, it was announced that Tempelhof would also become an emergency refugee camp.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3948 - Built in 1971, it was a celebrated piece of Brutalist architecture at its opening, but quickly fell out of favour. Consisting of an 11-storey office tower, and an In-Shops indoor market on the ground and first floors. Full of tacky clothes shops, greasy spoon cafes, amusement arcades and stalls where you can get a new drive belt for your vacuum cleaner. You get the picture.
Amazingly it is part of a grand scheme to gut the building completely, extend the office tower to a whopping 32-storeys, add a smaller 16-storey one for good measure and repackage it as a state of the art multi-use complex. This was all reported in the Evening Times in 2009, but sadly you can still buy a processed burger in the Savoy Centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDTJ - The super historic market square off the village green at Witney in lovely West Oxfordshire, sitting on the river Windrush, about 12 or so miles from Morses Oxford after a rain shower. It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEYAA8 - The Priory Church Parish of Christchurch, Dorset South West England with a passing priest.
Christchurch Priory is an ecclesiastical parish and former priory church in Christchurch in the English county of Dorset (formerly in Hampshire). Christchurch Priory is rated as in the top 18 churches in the Country and described by The Times as the least appreciated of the Great Churches of England. It is the longest parish church in the country and is larger than 21 English Anglican Cathedrals.
The legend of the miraculous beam dates to the early 12th century. The story is that a beam was found to have been cut too short when it was hoisted into place.
This would have been embarrassing for the carpenters since the wood was expensive and would be difficult to replace. There was however a mysterious carpenter who had worked and eaten alone. The day following the discovery, when the carpenters returned they found the beam was in place and it now fitted.
The unknown carpenter was never seen again, and the story came to be that it was Jesus Christ who had intervened. The church became Christ's Church of Twynham in commemoration of the event. In time the town became Twynham-Christchurch and eventually shortened to Christchurch. The beam can be seen today and is located in the Priory's Ambulatory.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWHC - Photo shows Sign from Willenhall Lock Museum, Walsall West Midlands, England, United Kingdom. The photograph is useful as a documentary record of a real place, object or public-facing scene. It can support local history, travel, social observation, news features and web articles where authentic context matters more than a polished studio image. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Walsall, West Midlands, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Visible wording, branding or signage noted in the supplied caption should be kept as search evidence because it helps buyers looking for specific editorial concepts, public messages, commercial streets, transport detail or local identity. The supplied caption gives the main editorial context
visible weather, signage and surrounding detail should be checked on upload. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
