THE HISTORY OF MEW, LANGTON AND COMPANY by Nick Redman, Whitbread's Company Archivist
In 1643 a Mr. Mewes held five plots of land in the Isle of Wight's capital. Although no document has been found that actually links him with the Mew family, there may well have been a connection. We do know that towards the end of the 18th century Benjamin Mew and his brother formed a partnership called Mew & Co. Brewers, with a brewery in Newport and another in Lymington. They also owned a number of pubs.
In 1850 the company was granted a royal warrant to supply Queen Victoria when she was in residence at Osborne House on the island. Soon afterwards the Newport plant was renamed the Royal Brewery. The firm continued to supply the Royal Household until George V's death in 1936. A 1911 price list includes Osborne Pale Ale and XXXS Nutritious Stout.
By 1965, the company had decided to accept a £1.5m merger offer from Strong & Co Ltd of Romsey. In 1969, bottling and brewing ceased at Newport, and the Royal Brewery became a distribution centre. By the end of the year Strong's had become part of the Whitbread group, and the 144 Mew houses on the island were soon being supplied with both company's products.
In 1973 the newly-established Whitbread Wessex built extensions to the bottled and draught beer storage area, and sited a new tobacco, wine and spirit warehouse in the old Mew Langton mineral water factory.
Five years ago, Whitbread began examining the future of its pubs on the island, which then numbered 112. Many were sold or closed. The Newport depot continued to operate until February this year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9E4N - A necktie or simply tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat.
Variants include the ascot tie, bow tie, bolo tie, zipper tie, cravat and clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat. Neck ties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office attire or formal wear.
Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff), whereas some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Neckties are traditionally worn with the top shirt button fastened, and the tie knot resting between the collar points. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BEW1FR - A signalman or signaller is an employee of a railway transport network who operates the points and signals from a signal box in order to control the movement of trains.
Contents
The first signalmen, originally called Railway Policemen (leading to the nickname of 'Bobby'), were employed in the early 19th century and used flags to communicate with each other and train drivers, and hourglasses for the purpose of Time Interval Working between stations.
Additional duties
It was a signalman's duty to check each train that passed their signal box, looking for the red tail lamp exhibited on the trailing vehicle, the sighting of which confirmed that the train was still complete, and thus the section was clear.
Each train movement was logged, by hand, in a Train Register Book, and it was normal practice to provide a special desk to support this sizeable book. As well as train movements, every communication between signalmen and adjacent signal boxes via bell codes (when accepting trains or dealing with a token) was logged.
Technological advances including mechanical fixed signals in the 1840s, the electric telegraph and block working in the 1850s, and proper mechanical interlocking from 1856, allowed safer, more expeditious train working, and more complicated track layouts to be controlled single-handedly. The advent of such technological advances gradually led to the provision of an enclosed workspace known as a signal box, signal cabin or interlocking tower.
The principles of British-style railway signalling have changed little since the Victorian era and early 20th century. Modern technology has generally reduced the labour required per train movement. In many cases, a switch, button or computer command is used to alter the lie of points and control signals. Although many classic mechanical signal boxes remain in use, these are gradually being replaced by modern power signalling systems on most railways. The heartlands of British-style railway signalling could be said

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMENC - Taken on 15 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Failure and corrosion of concrete tie bars, in a 1960s building in Durham, England, UK,. The location is Durham, England, UK. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains public house signs, frontage, street activity or drinking culture details useful for hospitality and heritage features. The damaged concrete and exposed fixing detail makes the image relevant to building safety, stock condition surveys, post-war construction, corrosion, maintenance budgets and the wider anxiety around failing materials. It could support features on pubs, beer, leisure, nightlife, tourism, heritage streets, local economies, independent hospitality and the pressures facing town-centre venues. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include concrete tie bar, failed, failing, wall, inspection, inspected, safety, material, grey, materials, tie bar, tie, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It also has a useful contemporary feel, because it shows how long-standing places, policies, products or institutions are encountered by ordinary people in daily life. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastructure, c.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy KDTFYG - Awards Evening, Black Tie gives a direct editorial record of a recognisable subject, with location, signage, architecture or everyday behaviour carrying much of the meaning. A black-tie awards evening suggests formal recognition, corporate hospitality, charity fundraising, professional networking and the ceremonial side of business and civic life. The subject can illustrate event management, gala dinners, sponsorship, achievement culture, evening wear, conference hotels, staff awards and the rituals organisations use to celebrate themselves. The location wording gives the subject enough geographic context for local and regional editorial use while avoiding a generic studio feel. For buyers, the strength lies in the combination of a named subject, a lived-in setting and enough visual specificity to carry stories about how places are used, remembered, funded, visited or contested.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B91 - Waiting staff (British English), waitstaff (North American English), waiters (male) / waitresses (female), or servers (North American English), or colloquially food runner, are those who work at a restaurant, a diner, or a bar and sometimes in private homes, attending to customers by supplying them with food and drink as requested. Waiting staff follow rules and guidelines determined by the manager. Waiting staff carry out many different tasks, such as taking orders, food-running, polishing dishes and silverware, helping bus tables and restocking working stations with needed supplies.
Waiting on tables is part of the service sector and among the most common occupations in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that, as of May 2008, there were over 2.2 million people employed as servers in the U.S.
